Hello and welcome to our March edition.
Already continually the local magazine with the most pages, we have added more this month.
This is the time of the year when we see a hint of spring, with the blossom on the almond trees. We have used this as a backdrop picture this month.
We with many others enjoyed a warm sunny day for the opening of Gran Alacants first park. The Mayors wife cut the ribbon to officially declare the park open, then everyone were allowed in to try out all of the equipment, or just to wander through this lovely relaxing area. We know throughout all of our meetings, that this was a dream come true for our Councillor Loreto Cascales, who had spent many hours getting the idea to fruition.
We always seem to be at the opening of something new in the area. Report & pictures in this issue of the opening of the revamped Santa Pola football stadium, which we have to say, is very very impressive. Have a good month Sandra & Barry
Numbers of visitors, reading our magazine, on our website are breaking all records!!! ***************** This facility is FREE to our advertisers in our printed magazine, giving our advertisers even more chance of promoting their business.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. The big news this month was the official opening of Gran Alacants first park. A massive crowd turned out to see the mayor Miguel Zaragoza and the councillor for Gran Alacant, Loreto Cascales open the 350,000 euro, 5,000 m2, project. We have pictures showing the big
crowd who turned up, and the facilities on the inside of the park. Play areas for the children, seating areas for a well earned rest, and areas to congregate, sit and chat. Everybody seemed very impressed with this new edition to the ever increasing facilities being provided for us all on Gran Alacant, by the Santa Pola Council. We at the magazine have had so many complaints about the amount of dog excrement left all over Gran Alacant. Loreto says that doggie bins have been provided and no one takes any notice, signs have been erected, and nobody takes any notice. It is sad for all of us to see this continued lack of thoughtfulness. The police are always watching, but it very difficult to catch them. Does anyone have any suggestions? The train is on the way. Meetings take place this week ( Feb 16th)
4
to decide the colours of the train and to finalise other decisions.
No date yet to start the new market place.
The general upgrading of the sports centre should be completed before the end of June.
All final bits and pieces of the new Clot walkway are at the final stage, and the date for the official opening will be announced in the near future. The second week of March is the “week of the working women” and celebrations will take place with various festivals, in Santa Pola between 8th and 14th of March.
As you will see in one of the emails sent to us, suggestions of trips to help the older children enjoy the area more. The start of help for younger and older children will be when the new Youth Club is officially opened in the hall at the Life Resort at the top of Gran Alacant. With regard to bus trips. If anyone can get together at least 40 people wanting to go on a trip, Loreto our Gran Alacant councillor would help make arrangements for a bus. The trouble is if only a few turn up for a large size bus, someone is
going to have to pay for the lack of “bums on seats”. Would anyone like to come forward and organise such trips and perhaps make up a list of interested people? We at the magazine would willingly help to publicise any events.
A make over is taking place at the Municiple Health Centre. The large space that used to house the Police Office in the front of the building is being turned into a new Paediatric Surgery which will be staffed by a Doctor and Nurse 1 day each week. At the moment all Gran Alacant childrens injections etc have to take place in Santa Pola but will be available here on our urbanization. So many facilities that once were only available in Santa Pola are now being achieved on Gran Alacant.
We did ask Loreto about no dogs allowed in the New Park and she confirmed that there is a sign saying NO DOGS, another example of people ignoring signs when we see dogs inside the park. The British Consulate is coming to Gran Alacant to talk to the British on 12th March at 10.30 am in the Life Resort theatre.

Hello and welcome to my beauty page. This month I an going to be discussing Reiki and Reflexology Reiki/spiritual healing. (I have done the first stage of this training)
Reiki means universal life force energy in Japanese. Reiki healers act as channels for this universal energy to pass into the client. By using their hands in certain positions on different parts of the body, the healer is said to draw energy to the body, promoting healing, balance and relaxation.
Reflexology
This is a holistic therapy which treats the whole person, particularly weak or ill areas, by using the clientʼs feet as “maps” of the body. On the feet there are points or zones which correspond to different organs and systems of the body. By pressing on one of these points, the corresponding organ in the body is affected. For example, pressing on the tip of the big toe will cause a response in the brain and vice versa, if there is a problem with the brain the reflexologist will recognize the symptoms of this in the big toe. This relationship, between a point on the foot and another part of the body is known as a reflex. A trained reflexologist uses finger or thumb pressure on each of the zones to find the problem areas. They then apply more pressure which helps the corresponding part of the body to heal Thatʼs all for now folks.
Next month as it is time to get those toes out, I will be discussing Pedicures.
“Remedial Therapy” (sports flexibility) now available on Mondays by Eda

Poem for the month, from our
phantom poet
March Winds March Winds March winds blow across the bay, Quick to dry your washing better than a summer’s day. Your Bridget Jones or sexy thongs blow wildly in the breeze, Just to find them pegged online would put your mind at ease. The sandy dust lands at your door you sweep and mop forever, terraces filled with wind blown leaves as you struggle to endeavour. Hats and scarves like flying kites, air that takes your breath away, Yes March winds have returned again to Alicante Bay. 14

Dear Barry and Sandra,
Genuine emails to our magazine
Having just arrived back home in UK after enjoying a holiday in our property in Puerto Marina, we would like to thank you for all your efforts in trying to improve all areas of GA, and agree with the letter from Linda which you published in the January edition of the Gran Alicant advertiser concerning the entrance to GA, we must agree that a parade of trees is definately required from the entrance to the first roundabout from the n332 past the commercial centre to the roundabout. GA certainly needs some greenery and camouflage to break up all the large advertising signs that are there . We enjoy reading the GA magazine and appreciate all the good work being achieved with the help of loreta for the whole of Gran Alicant - please keep up the good work ! Wendy&David Dear Barry and Sandra
We visited the new park on Sunday afternoon, what a delightful place and the children were really making use of all the facilities and enjoying themselves. One thing we would like to see is a notice :STRICTLY NO DOGS ALLOWED AT ANY TIME; There were a few dogs in the park and also some of their mess, which of course is dangerous for the children. Congratulations to Loreto on her achievement.
Cheers, Maggie & Chris Hi Barry
A few of us got together the other night and were saying thats its great for all the younger children in gran alacant with all the new parks and the community center going ahead, but theres not much for us to do so we were thinking it would be great to have a bowling alley here or similar and if thats not possible then maybe coach trips could be organized once a month to go to the bowling allies, cinemas, ice-rinks and other places of interest.
Through the summer we always hear parents saying that their children will not be visiting next year as they are bored (teenagers who don始t like to sunbathe and can not drink) so I think this could be a good thing for gran alacant If you also think this then could you possible bring it up at your next meeting?
Thanks
Dear Barry & Sandra
Following our recent visit to GA and reading this month's Advertiser, we thought we must write to agree with the others concerning the dog fouling. We also are concerned that if nothing is done soon it will be completely out of control. We live opposite the wasteland next to the school and watch each day as owners allow their dogs to foul and not clean it up. Not only is it unpleasant, especially if we are sitting on the patio, but it must be a health hazard, as we have mentioned before, to the children in the school as they do play there. As the rest of the area is now looking good with trees, fencing and play areas, our section seems to be completely left out. Would it not be prudent to fence off the wasteland area, nothing posh, low fencing like the beach road and continue around with a few trees as planted on the main road. An area, nearer the main road, away from the residential side, could be left open for dog walking with bins placed for use and this could also be easily watched for offenders. It does seem a shame that this subject raises it head every time, but we feel that GA is now starting to look smart and wish to see it improve even further. Lyn & Don Lucas

Hannah is a Doberman, possibly a

Doberman’s. She is 18 months old and very gentle. Someone made an attempt to

Harley is a Doberman cross, approx 8

common in Spain for certain types of people to do this, they believe that
it makes a dog to look cool! Hannah is a very loving dog and likes nothing more than to lay on a blanket on the floor next to you, she will be a very loyal pet for her new owner. Harley is a very loving dog and likes to play, he will be a great pet, he does not know that he has cropped ears.

At long last I can announce a new date for our long awaited production of 'Habeas Corpus'! This will take place on Saturday and Sunday 23rd and 24th October 2010. I am sorry it is so far in the future but dates at the Case Del Cultura in Santa Pola are hard to come by. In the meantime we will be presenting an evening of theatre in the Life Resort in Gran Alacant on the 4th and 5th June. This will be an evening of entertainment looking at life in general through the medium of sketches, readings and music. Look out for publicity in and around the Gran Alacant area! We are still desperate for people to assist in our venture of presenting theatre, both in Gran Alacant and Santa pola. Any person who would like to be involved then please contact me - David Ashley - on either of the two following numbers - 966 181 113 or 628 774 461.

BEST EVER BLONDE JOKE
A blonde calls her boyfriend and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started." Her boyfriend asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The blonde says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh. .. . ...
"Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'. The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?' The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

Hi everybody, This month there are not too many fiestas going on, just getting ready for Holy Week next month. There is only one parade of Moors and Christians in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) 17th to 21st. If you do not want to go to the big fiesta in Valencia you can enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. Here in The Costa Blanca as I’ve told you this month is very quiet . In Valencia takes place one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” the programme is too long but there are parades, floral offerings, this event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks, dancing and music everywehere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers) you can think of. Byebye.
The Cardinal Belluga Theatre Group did it again The 3 Kings came to the Staff & Children of Emmaus children’s care home in Elche on Tuesday 5th January bearing the gift of an industrial washing machine, fulfilling the promise made by Maria the chairperson in November. The money was raised by the members holding carol concerts 3 in La marina & 1 in Benimar. A special thank you to Carol who collected donations in the Temptations Bar and Pat & Richard who kindly held a quiz at their home. The amount of € 850.00 raised was enough for the deposit & delivery to get the machine installed. A charity Cabaret Concert is organised for the 17th March at the La Marina Sports Complex to help raise the balance for the machine. Tickets will cost € 5.00. The theatre group started rehearsals for their next show on Monday 11th January to be held at the Cardinal Belluga Theatre San Fulgencio in May. If you would like to join us you will be made very welcome, so far we have raised € 4.500 for S.E.M the local ambulance service. For further details of the group or tickets please ring Maria on 966715891 or email mariamosley3@hotmail.com

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?'
Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'
The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

Santa Pola Football Club Now open for business the Estadio Manolo Macia By Kevin Rendall On a cloudless but deceptively chilly late January morning, almost a thousand people attended the inauguration of Santa Pola’s remodelled Estadio Municipal Manolo Macia, home to Club Atletismo de Santa Pola and Santa Pola CF. The football team last played there eighteen games and more than six months ago and on their long awaited return, all concerned with the club were delighted with their new home. After the traditional tape cutting ceremony, local Mayor Miguel Zaragoza - Fernandez and Don Bernabe Cano, Valencian Autonomous Government Deputy for Sport, declared the place open for business and began a short inspection tour of the facilities accompanied by local photographers and journalists. Costing just over nine hundred thousand Euros, the
project was completed on time and without going over budget by Alicante construction company Ziclo Construccion in conjunction with Santa Pola Ayuntamiento architect Maria Jose Mogica. Santa Pola CF already had the best playing surface in the league and now they, and the town, have a simply stunning sports facility. Where was all that money spent? Previously, the old stand roof left spectators open to the elements and at times cast a shadow over part of the pitch. Now the entire seating area, which was also increased by twenty five metres either side of the original, is completely covered and includes two commentary/press booths, together with a state of the art PA system. That though is the obvious improvement, visible to everyone. Out of sight to most visitors the new, improved Manolo Macia also includes an immaculate gymnasium, ticket office, treatment room and more than 1000m2 of storage space. Outside, powerful new floodlights replace their aging predecessors, the perimeter fencing has been upgraded and the entire edifice has been tastefully glazed and tiled. There was even a little spare cash at the end for an electronic scoreboard. Prior to the first match at the remodelled stadium, an exhibition game between two of the Santa Pola academy teams, there were a series of short

speeches by local dignitaries to officially declare the stadium open. Said Miguel Zaragoza, “Santa Pola now has a facility second to none locally, with this we can move forward with our stated aims of promoting health amongst our youngsters through sport and in the process emphasise Santa Pola as a tourist destination of high quality” His words were echoed by Bernabe Cano who added “Santa Pola now has an enviable sports ground the entire community can enjoy and benefit from” As you can see from the photographs of the very well attended event, the money was very well spent indeed.

Later that same afternoon in order not to clash with the organised chaos that is the town’s half marathon event, Santa Pola kicked off with a rare Saturday match in their first game back. Thader de Rojales were the visitors, a team not renowned for setting the league alight, and on the day of the match, three places worse off than Santa Pola in the league. The 0-2 home loss therefore was doubly disappointing, with the utmost respect, Thader are an ordinary team at best. In fairness to Santa Pola, they battled hard for the entire ninety minutes and came up against a visiting goal-keeper in outstanding form. In the end, a second goal for Thader deep into injury time denied Santa Pola the chance of a point and ensured they slipped to defeat. A week later Santa Pola re-acquainted
were Hercules B, a huge crowd bolstered by a large visiting contingent saw the visitors systematically destroyed by a rampant Santa Pola who finished the game worthy 4-1 winners. With largely the same starting eleven and thoroughly good team performances, Santa Pola could easily have had this kind of pleasing result in their previous couple of games, for whatever reason though it wasn’t to be. Football, at whatever level, most definitely is a funny old game. The final February fixture before the Advertiser went to press saw the” Rojiblancos” travel to bottom club Aspe for what, on paper, should have been a relatively straightforward win. Earlier in the season Aspe were soundly beaten four-nil and so Santa Pola arrived with high hopes. Nothing is certain though in soccer and another goal-less draw on an absolutely diabolical pitch saw Aspe scrap for their lives to keep Santa Pola at

Approaching the start of March, the Preferente Group 4 season still had almost three more complete months to run with ten games and thirty points each to be squabbled over. It’s about a month before things start to get tense at the top and bottom of the league, but, presently Horadada, Benissa and Mutxamel are setting the pace at the business end with Alfaz, Orihuela B and Aspe fending off the drop. March needs to see Santa Pola make a move by stringing a good run of results together.

So you’ve got your Spanish Will. But what are the consequences of your actions. Did anyone explain Inheritance Tax in Spain to you? Probably not. Sadly enough, it is a fact, that everybody must depart from this world at one time or another. Their assets, however, will remain. Those goods and assets that belonged to the deceased person at the time of his/her death form their inheritance. For many it is only during a time of grief that the question of Inheritance Tax raises it’s head. And for some it is a great shock. Fiscal Residents of the Communidad Valencia receive tax relief on Inheritance Tax. Unfortuntately, what constitutes a Fiscal Resident is often not appreciated and whilst many people have lived here for years and believe that they are a resident, they are not. This leads to difficulties with Inheritance Tax. A further problem is often the construction of the Will itself. Many couples are in a second relationship with children from a first and proper and adequate planning has often not been given as to how to deal with this. This again can have a significant bearing on Inheritance Tax, particularly for unmarried couples.
60
To consider each individual situation, you need to look at the value of the assets in Spain, the relationship betweenthe deceased and the beneficiary and the net worth of the beneficiary. All these factors are taken into account to calculate Inheritance Tax. For those who are not fiscally resident in Spain they should look carefully at their situation, and where appropriate ensure that they have sufficient funds set aside to pay Inheritance Tax in the event of their death. A further important factor is that for many they ultimately leave their assets to their children who are usually not resident in Spain. They will have Inheritance Tax to pay because they will not benefit from the tax relief available to fiscal residents. There is also the misconception that there is no inheritance tax because it is below the threshold. This view is based on the allowances in the UK which have absolutely no standing in Spain. In certain circumstances there are no allowances for a beneficiary in others there is an allowance of just under 16000â‚Ź which, lets be honest is not much. So when faced with this situation there is the question of who inherits and to what extent their liability is to inheritance tax. Whilst fiscal residents in the Valencia Region and their spouse/children who are also fiscally resident in the region dobenefit from 95% tax relief, sadly is it not available for anyone who does not fall into that criteria such as a partner or non
resident. This is particularly relevant to those couples who are unmarried. Will or no Will there is no tax relief and the tax payable is at a much higher rate. Don’t forget that you can leave your assets to children from a previous relationship whilst protecting your partner. Getting the right advice and working out what is best for you and your loved ones could save thousands. It doesn’t matter how many times we write on this topic there are still those that don’t listen and it is usually to their loved ones cost. It is usual that children inherit on the death of the second parent, they having left their assets to each other in the first instance. One problem for the Expat in Spain, is that there is an illusion that upon death the estate passes automatically to the Spouse. This just isn’t right. Failure to make a Will causes unbelievable difficulties for the family left behind. Whether we like it or not the Spanish system is in place to keep assets within the bloodline. As a UK national, English law applies to your Spanish Will and you do have the democratic right to leave your assets to whoever you wish, but make sure you get it right. If anyone just takes instructions from you without discussing your circumstances and/or inheritance tax and your beneficiaries exposure to it – BEWARE. You
could be making a costly mistake. Cross border laws and tax implications are complex and everyone is entitled to know their own position before making an informed choice. Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club – Sponsored by Super Valu Our Sad losses We are extremely sad to announce the passing of three of our well-liked bowling members Ron Gatward, Joe Verrico and John Bevington. Ron, one of the original members of Monte Mar Bowls Club, had been an active bowling member of the club, playing in the Southern League and the SABA. Only twelve months ago, he was a member of the team that won the Monte Mar Open Tournament. Every one that came into contact with Ron described him as a lovely man, always good-humoured and a friend to all. Club members received a further blow, news arrived from the UK that another of our members, Joe Verrico, has also passed away. Joe had not been seen at the club since November, when he set off for Australia to visit family, and it was there that he was first taken ill. Having returned from Australia, he remained in the UK receiving treatment for a serious illness, but unfortunately to no avail.
recent months owing to illness, but could always be relied upon to turn out for the club when needed. He and his wife Margaret were regular visitors to the club as spectators, where John entertained with his dry sense of humour. All three will be sadly missed by all who knew them, and we extend our sincere condolences to their respective families.
Club Championships As one of our ladies involved in the Ladies Triples Final has commitments in the UK, this final was moved forward to accommodate her. The two teams that contested the final were Babs Caiger, Sue Bounds and Pauline Woodfine up against Lynne Armitage, Janet Gatward and Pat Harman. On a lovely sunny afternoon there was a good turnout of spectators supporting both team, and they were treated to a master class of bowls from the team skipped by Pat Harman. From the first end they took charge of the match and eventually won by a large margin, so congratulations to them and commiserations to the runners up.
Joe was a quiet but very friendly man, whose good manners and grace won him many admirers and friends at the club. Yet more sad news came when we heard of the sudden death of another of our bowlers, Gran Alacant resident John Bevington, better known throughout our club as Biker John. John played bowls only occasionally over

TEAR PROBLEMS Ocular care is a fundamental part of our pet’s health, that’s because it’s quite important for the owner to check regularly the eyes of the pet, because most ocular problems have a slow evolution, so in many cases, when the animal is checked by the Vet for the first time, the ocular disease may be on a late stage, when is more difficult to treat. In this article we are just going to write about two ocular pathologies which affect the production of tears: an excess of tears caused by a defective drainage, and a tears deficit. Tears have two main components: water and mucus, so the deficit may affect just one of them, or both. Normally, when we say dry eye, we mean the eyeball is dry and not shiny, normally due to a water deficit. The eyeball in these cases is covered by green mucus, which can be confused with pus or sebum, and just by washing the eye it looks better, even if no treatment has been put (because we are wetting the eye). Of course, the main problem that caused the dry eye will still be there unless is treated, and the process will continue its evolution, getting complicated very
often with a corneal ulcer, very painful and difficult to treat. So, the very first thing the owner reports when a dry eye appears, is mucus covering the eye, and, of course, conjunctivitis, and the animal feels better after having the eyes washed. What happens when there is a problem with tears drainage system? We see an increased quantity of tears or mucus, which usually improves after washing the eyes as well. In this case, the problem comes from the impossibility of the tears for following their natural drainage way, through nasolacrimal duct, to the nose. This is the reason because dog’s nose is always wet. When the duct is obstructed (by mucus, or maybe because the animal is been born without it), the excess of tears stains the cheeks (the animal looks like it’s been crying). This is a typical problem of animals with short nose and big eyes, for example pugs and Persian cats. Besides, this kind of animals produce a bigger quantity of tears than other ones, for compensating the fact that their eyes are very exposed to traumas. The problem will be even bigger in long haired animals (Yorkshire terriers, Poodles), and in animals whose face skin is full of wrinkles (Pug, Persian cat, English Bulldog), because, instead of falling down

the cheeks, the excess of tears will remain next to the eye, infecting the skin, and producing a similar image to dry eye: lots of mucus and red eye. In those animals with long, hanging cheeks (Cocker Spaniels and Mastiffs), the lower eyelid is unable to cover properly the lower part of the eyeball, so that part of the conjunctiva will be permanently exposed. This produces a chronical conjunctivitis due to a continuous aggression by wind, dust, etc. In all those cases, cleansing the eye with some saline solution, and removing the excess of mucus, will make the eyes improve temporally. If the problem was just an irritation, this will be enough, but if no improvement can be seen in 24-48h, is time to go to the Vet. In case of an obstructed nasolacrimal duct, is not an emergency or a serious problem, and will not endanger the eye or the sense of vision at all. The biggest problem, in these cases, is the skin sooner or later gets infected because is always wet. When the problem is a dry eye, it always implies a serious problem, and even more when it gets complicated with a corneal ulcer, which may perforate the cornea within 12-24h. Dogs and cats eyes (same as ours), mustn’t be manipulated, and we mustn’t “try” any eye drops we have at home. The only thing we can do is to clean them with some saline (much better than warm water or chamomile) and to remove the
mucus with cotton tissues (a different one for every eye, for avoiding crossing contamination). When the pet eyes are irritated or photophobic or producing more mucus than normal longer than 24-48h, is time to see the Vet. In this case, you’d better don’t wash the eyes, for allowing the Vet check what kind of secretion is it (mucus or pus), and the most important, for avoiding a false result of the tears test, which is the only way to make a dry eye diagnosis. This disease, which seems to have an immunological cause and is typical of West Highland and Yorkshire Terriers, was treated in the past by a very difficult operation which consisted of relocating one of the saliva glands ductus next to the eye (the animal had to have 6-8 meals a day to have the eye properly lubricated by the saliva!), but nowadays immunomodulatory drops are a more reasonable and effective treatment (must be done for life). It’s not a normal condition for the eye to be red, closed or dirty. May not be a big problem, or just a hygiene deficit, but if you are not sure, just tell your Vet. When my younger brother got his first bike, he developed the unusual habit of looking down at the foot pedals while he was cycling along. A combination of this and an unexpectedly parked car led to a badly chipped front tooth and a determination not to cycle like that ever again. If you don’t look where you are going, you are bound to end up in a pickle eventually. This is something that our bird this month doesn’t seem to have learnt. Each year there are reports of stunned Marsh Harriers which have flown into trees, telegraph poles, electricity pylons and the like while flying along at low level with their heads down, which is their usual method of hunting. It is a rare breeding bird in the UK, but there are up to 1,000 breeding pairs in the whole of Spain. These numbers are heavily augmented during the winter months by birds visiting from more northerly and easterly parts of Europe, and several of these visit the Clot. You might mistake them at first for some species of eagle or buzzard (and there are a few of those about as well) as they are quite large birds, and they will drift slowly in the thermals as they hunt over their range in a similar fashion. What you are looking for in the way of identification is a long-tailed bird with wings held in a shallow V shape as it circles overhead. My photograph shows a female with a creamy-coloured head; the males are actually smaller and lighter coloured, with more grey in the tail and wings, and the head is streaked with grey and
brown. As the name implies, these are birds of wetland areas, feeding on birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians which they catch by flying along slowly at low level, then dropping down suddenly to catch their prey. There have been reports of Marsh Harriers actually drowning their prey; sitting on the water holding their catch beneath them until they were sure that it was dead. The Spanish name for the Marsh Harrier is Aguilucho Lagunero which of course refers to their habitat – lagoons and

marshes – and the fact that it looks a bit like an eagle. If you are in one of the bird hides in the Clot, or just strolling along the paths, and all of a sudden the whole duck population seems to take to the skies in a quacking panic, it is worth while scanning the skies overhead to see if one of these magnificent birds has spooked them. You might like your paté, but the Marsh Harrier likes his Pato. See you next month.
