We want to assure all of our advertisers that we will not start charging for our magazine. We know many of you are concerned that their advertising will be behind counters instead of being accessible to all. Our magazine is distributed at bars restaurants, businesses and supermarkets, etc on display, for you to take away. We distribute all of our print run, so that none of your advertising is destroyed at the end of the month. With our prices, we have always looked after our advertisers, with prices still as four years ago, so have never taken advantage of businesses in the area. This month we welcome two new feature writers. Chris Turton an Independent Financial Adviser and Mark Etheridge letting us know what goes on in El Clot. Plus the GA bowls club joins us with their news items.

All of the items mentioned are just the start of what can now be organised with the Town Hall. I think we all agree with the success of the GA train. This will continue. The present operator will continue until all proposals from interested parties to run a train next year, have been looked into, and decided on the best prospect for the coming year. A suggestion put to us to mention was: in the event of an accident, how can the ambulance company know who to contact for you. The Red Cross (Cruz Roja) people are already asking for this in our area. They would like to to enter in your phone AA EMERGENCIA accompanied by the number of a friend/relative to contact in case of emergency. The AA in front of the word Emergencia is very important as it will ensure that it will always be at the top of your phone number list. What a good idea! After we mentioned the work to be carried out behind the Santa Pola Life resort at the Sierra Mar on Gran Alacant, some people were worried about the disturbance to the wildlife. We have been asked to assure all concerned, that the protection of the birds, animals, and general area, will be top of the list of priorities as this area is proteced land. You will see on our email page a

letter about the Santa Pola cinema. Why can we not have English language films. This is already in hand by the Town Hall and it is hoped to get something arranged. In the same letter it was asked if anybody would be interested in a theatre group being formed. The council have said that they will provide the facilities. There is info elsewhere in this months magazine. As soon as we get a list of interested parties, a meeting can be arranged with Loreto to get this up and going. With a nice auditorium at the Santa Pola Life Resort we are sure that this could provide Gran Alacant with some wonderful entertainment. The missing pavement section between the school and the GA centre will all be completed in this years budget. As well as the new pathway, trees are to be planted along its length.
Town Hall, Masa, and other interested parties, to help solve the problem. The promise in an earlier issue has become fact. A nice long line of trees in front of Altomar 1 and more provided on the hill down to the beach crossroad, and very nice they look to! To all of our internet readers
who do not live out here, a picture for you. Last month we spoke about the new park on Gran Alacant. Below are
We had quite a discussion about the number of dogs being affected this year by those dreaded caterpillas that have harmed so many of our pet dogs. We asked, why plant pine trees? They are a native tree of Spain and have always been a first choice, however, they will now look into this, and in some areas to use a different tree. The responsibilty of spraying these trees does not fall within the scope of our Town Hall, but they have assured us that they have put pressure on those that are responsible to spray much more often. The rubbish dumping in many area around our urbanisation is a growing problem. Loreto and Lola (Councillor of Urbanisations) from the Town Hall, have had a good ride around the urbanisation to target the bad areas. Meetings are taking place with the
colour copies of the plans. As always, if there are matters you would like us to raise with the Town Hall, please email them to us and we can try to help get them sorted.

FILLING A GAP! What do they have in Calpe and Torrevieja that we don´t have in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola? A drama group, that's what Back in the UK, there's hardly a town or village without its own amateur dramatic society putting on plays and pantos in the local hall - a great basis for activity and socialising for the community. And elsewhere on the Costa, to the north and south of us in the Santa Pola area, there are entertainment groups of all sorts putting on shows to have fun, and to raise money for charities at the same time. Now Gran Alacant resident Roger Keevil wants to fill the gap by starting our own theatre group maybe calling it the Gran Alacant Players. Before moving to Spain, Roger and his partner Chris had many years' experience acting and directing in amateur theatre in the UK, and he's sure that they can´t be the only ones in our area with similar experience who would like to be involved in a drama group without the need for an hour's drive up or down the coast. And with new local facilities becoming available - the new auditorium at the Santa Pola Life Resort in Gran Alacant, and Mayor Miguel Zaragoza's ambitious plans for a civic theatre in Santa Pola itself - now is the perfect time to get the ball rolling. Anyone who would like to take part in the group, whether onstage or behind the scenes, whether you have acting experience or not, whatever your age, should contact Roger via the Gran Alacant Advertiser at laneinspain@hotmail.com or 966 699 167, and he'll get back to you.

Hello every one, here is your next installment of Skin types. Greasy skin produces more sebum than is required to lubricate and protect the skin. The skin surface appears thick, coarse, dull shiny and some times grimy. This build up of sebum in the ducts and hair follicles stretches the pores. Depending on how the skin is cared for, the pores may be open or blocked. Open pores provide a route for bacteria, which cause infections and spots. Pres that are blocked can result in comedones (blackheads). A thick coating of sebum on the skin delays the rate at which desquamation occurs. Instead of being shed evenly, the surface cells remain “stuck down” attracting more dust and grime. During this time new cells continue to be produced in the epidermis so that the overall thickness of the skin increases. This, together with the extra fatty content of the epidermis, gives the skin a dull, shallow (yellowish) appearance. Causes of greasy skin occur naturally when the balance of androgens (the male sex hormones, responsible for activating the sebaceous gland) is higher than normal. This commonly occurs at puberty before the balance of sex hormones has settled down. Combination skin exists where different areas show different physical characteristics. The most common combination consists of normal-to-dry over the cheeks and side of the face, with a greaser T-zone down the center. Sensitive skin all skin is sensitive, however, this term is used to describe a condition where the skin is hypersensitive, skin which over reacts to even the mildest stimulus. Next month I will discuss, Congested, Dehydrated, Blemished, Ethnic, and Infected skin types. See you then Dott

The entertainment SCENE in and around .....and this month within a two hour flight of....
gran alacant Hola peeps! Please have a box of tissues at hand for this month's review. More of an epic tale of failure and mis-fortune that began on Saturday 22nd of February after, I must mention a treacherous journey through three countries. Staying at a friend's house, just outside London, U.K. and with access to the internnet, after many hours of surfing, I opted to checkout the international and highly acclaimed Pacha nightclub. This world famous night began with a venue on the hedonistic Isle of Ibiza, and including the London club, has another branch in Torrievieja. The tube journey was straight forward and at the same time entertaining. Every walk of life from all four corners of the globe passes through the capital, making it a truly cosmopolitan adventure, all year round. Now in the fickle world of media, usually a good blag will get you a walkover in return for a coveted review in the Gran Alacant Advertiser. However, as I came out of Victoria Street Station, Pacha Club was right next door. My composure was not quite ready and ashamed as I am to admit it, I got the knockback. I was politely told by a very dapper Chris Eubank impersonator (accent included) that I didn't look quite smart enough for their club that night. People staring and face getting redder by the second, I sulked off, tail between legs. They were looking for the "just London look" and my "just landed look" didn't go down too well.
22
Stop Laughing please! It really hurts. Anyway, "come 'ere there's more" - Not to be beaten and glutton for punishment I tried my hand at the other entrance to the club. As I queued, a bloke who had some spare tickets from a group party sold me one for £15, £5 cheaper than the door fee. Sorted. I thought, as I neared the threshold, "I'll buy that guy a drink inside for helping me out", when smack in the face number two came along. It seems that all clubs in London require guests to carry identification. When the bouncer who was twice my height asked me for I.D. I thought he was confused by my young, boyish looks. Alas, an insurance regulation along with a strict "dress to impress" door policy obstructed a nightout, that could of, should of and would of been a great experience. But it was sadly not to be. Out of all the entertainment venues on offer in London, Pacha was the only place for me, but sadly I wasn't good enough for them. Lesson learned, don't judge a book by it's cover. There are two types of male in this world "Scruffs" and "Puffs" and I know which one I am. THE VERDICT: 1-10 Rating: (see above) Entrance Fee: (see above) Bar prices: (see above) Return visit: I'm still sulking, but if they ask me nicely, maybe. (Slightly wounded) TASTYFOX PROMOTIONS

Christopher Turton & Associates (Independent Financial Advisors) of La Marina have joined our magazine this month. They have many years experience in financial planning, taxation and investment issues. Chris has been in practice for twenty-five years and the last seven here in the Costas. Where is the financial world heading in 2009 and beyond? Welcome to the first of a series of articles written to inform readers of the Gran Alacant Advertiser. We look forward to providing readers with useful information, and we are available for both meetings at clients’ homes and in our La Marina offices. When independent advice is sought from an organisation such as ours – one that is authorised by the relevant body, the client has confidence that the advisory practice is best placed to protect capital in tumultuous times. Over the last few months we have been asked on numerous occasions where we see the financial markets heading in future months and years. How can we avoid bank deposit interest rates of 1% or less? How can we save securely without fear of our chosen bank folding? Let’s take a brief look at four important and crucial concerns and opportunities: Cash Deposits: With the prospect of very low inflation, or even deflation, it is little surprise that we are now seeing such unattractive interest rates on cash deposits. Some observers even refer to the once safe environment of bank deposits as risky – in that there are concerns over the banking industry’s ability to ride out this current storm and survive, and because inflation is likely to rise in 2009 and erode the value and spending power of our deposits. In this climate, talking to your bank will glean little meaningful information as they have a “vested interest” in keeping your business - it is crucial that independent advice is sought now. Exchange rates: The market makers, fund managers and advisors we have elected to utilise on behalf of our clients expect volatility to ease as the year progresses. This means that at least those who are responsible for handling our money will have some platform of “normality” in which to plan and operate. For those on fixed income derived from GBP Sterling, we expect a modest recovery in the values vs the €uro……….however, the halcyon days of 1.40 plus seem a long way off – will they ever return on a consistent level? We doubt it! This means the retired and others solely dependent on GBP exchange rates being favourable need to allow for a future of lower €uro income - a sobering thought. Equity markets, the key drivers of capitalist nations: Without being over-optimistic and unrealistic, careful “stock-picking” equity managers claim to see the green-shoots of a start to the recovery. They anticipate a difficult year with lower volatility and values rising in the last two quarters of 2009. Some even claim that equities are now cheap, even in the face of the recession. Remember, equity markets are usually the first to act on a recovery, just as they are very often first to suffer in a downturn. This comes as only a little consolation for those in equities who have suffered, but as equities are considered by many to be cheap, it’s only a matter of time before money is invested back into the market. Property: We expect the distressed assets of the property market, who’s values dropped further than any of us could have imagined, to take longer to recover from the shocks of 2008/9. Private investors remain sceptical and shy of an illiquid and distressed asset class. With so little in the way of commercial transactions, property funds are quite hard to value at present – and most have suspended trading until it is considered appropriate to resume normal trading. This protects funds from huge unmanageable redemption requests. - Expect a tough 2009. Chris or his colleagues are available on one of the numbers below. Please don’t wait until it’s too late, seek independent financial advice now. I look forward to writing for you again next month, best wishes Chris Turton. christurton1@terra.es Office 902 883 052 (National & Answer-phone) 966 795 714 (Local, La Marina) Mobile 616 531 095 (Chris Turton Direct)

Most diets are hard to stick with because they leave you feeling hungry and they don’t help you tackle all those other obstacles that cause you to overeat, like boredom, stress or simply because the food is there in front of you. The new Discover plan is different. It’s a sensible healthy approach to lasting weight loss. With the Discover plan you’ll learn: • To make the right choices so you’ll feel more satisfied and won’t give in to temptation. • Which foods help keep you fuller longer, so hunger stays in check. • To avoid boredom and stress eating. • To eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. for further information please ring: 966 792 276 Hi everybody,
This month there are not too many fiestas going on, just getting ready for Holy Week next month. So the same as November, take advantage of the good weather and try to enjoy with cultural activities. There is only one parade of Moors and Christians in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) 21st to 22nd . If you do not want to go to the big fiesta in Valencia you can enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. Here in The Costa Blanca as I’ve told you this month is very quiet. But in Valencia takes place one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” the programme is too long but there are parades, floral offerings, this event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks, dancing and music everywehere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes” (powerful firecrackers) you can think of.
So my dear friends that is all for now.
Byebye.

We, at Legal Solutions are often asked about Drivers medicals and drivers licences. Since we first brought the subject of drivers medicals to the attention of the ex-pats early last year we regularly receive enquires at our office, based in Urb. La Marina as to whether it is obligatory to have a medical certificate. This subject is under debate. After contacting various Insurance companies, they have stated there is no need for a medical certificate for holders of European driving licences, but would not put this in writing. The chief at Trafico, Alicante has confirmed that it is necessary for ALL drivers on Spanish roads to have a medical carried out regardless of where their drivers licence was issued. We also enquired at the La Marina Police Office who also confirmed that a certificate was obligatory. These certificates have to be renewed every 10 years from the age of 18-45 years, every 5 years from the age of 45-70 years and every 2 years from the age of 70 years. We have also heard from clients who have been stopped by Guardia Civil Trafico and were not asked for the medical certificate. Therefore, like everything else in Spain it is up to the discretion of the authorities. But, as it is very easy and relatively cheap to obtain a medical certificate, we always advise our clients it is better to be safe than sorry. If you would like more information, please contact our office. To obtain a Spanish drivers licence you need to obtain a medical certificate. You also need 2 photographs for the medical centre and 2 for Trafico. Also required is a Residencia card (original) or if you do not have the Residencia card then you need your Residencia certificate, Padron (the date of issue must be within 3 months) and your original passport and both parts of drivers licence. You must be resident in Spain for a minimum of 6 months (and be able to prove it, by either Fecha de alta on Padron or by the date of issue on the residencia certificate). WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge Anyone who ventures into the Clot, particularly in the vicinity of the Carabassi bars, will be familiar with the two wooden structures illustrated. What they may not know is why some very intense-looking people with camera and telescope systems which resemble small cannons should inhabit these hides. We are very fortunate to have this small oasis given over to wildlife, and it has become a magnet for visitors interested in birds, animals, insects and plants. The Brits, as a nation of animal lovers, have always taken an interest in such matters, but it is gratifying to note that a high proportion of these cannontoting folk are Spanish; this increased level of national interest can only benefit the area which has been over-developed to the detriment of wildlife, and preserve this vital habitat in the midst of so much human activity. For me, as a birdwatcher and photographer, one of the main delights in touring the Clot is the mixture of familiar birds from the UK, as well as species which are either rare or unknown in Britain. Did you know, for example, that the type of Starling you see in the Clot in summer is quite different to the one found back in Blighty, and during the winter months you can actually see the two varieties side-by-side and compare the differences? For the botanist, there is a range of interesting plants from Palm trees to Feather Grass and everything in between – and if he knows where to look at the right time, at least two species of orchid. The lepidopterist can chase and photograph (but not capture!) many varieties of butterfly including the magnificent Swallowtail, the herpetologist can study whatever it is that interests them (actually things like frogs, toads, lizards and snakes!) and the mammalogist can study the bunnies which abound in the Clot. In fact, anyone with an “ology” related to wildlife will find the area to be a goldmine of opportunity. Over the coming months, I will be introducing you to the weird and wonderful species of wildlife to be found almost on your doorstep, and answering a few vital questions such as: •Which inhabitant of nuclear power stations in the UK spends the winter in Gran Alacant? •Why does a bird called the Hoopoe seem to have a range-finder system installed? •Which very remarkable bird suffers an identity crisis at the hands of British birders? •Why should you never attempt to stick your finger into the mouth of one species of snake? •Which particular species of duck does not welcome visitors from the USA? •What are dragonflies doing when they fly in pairs with the tail of the leading one attached to the head of the second one? •Why should you be very grateful to a tiny greenish-brown bird which is only found in the Clot during the winter months? I’ll tell you the answer to at least one of these questions next month!

The above map opposite shows the overall view of part of the General Plan of Santa Pola, whereas the map below is the expanded area of the golf course. We have drawn in the black line to show the N332 and the red circle to show the petrol station junction of the Gran Alacant Urbanisation. So, looking now at the bottom map, we can see that as we cross the N332 from Gran Alacant we will be met by a large roundabout. As we go straight over, all of the dark blue areas will be various commercial areas. All of the green either side, shows the golf course.

The marked yellow areas will be detached villas, with, next to them, in dark and light orange, various houses and apartments. It is hoped that the golf course and roadways will take about 3 years and all of the housing will be spread over a period of 10 - 15 years.

THE SPEECH THERAPIST A very pretty young speech therapist was getting nowhere with her Stammerers Action group. She had tried every technique in the book without the slightest success. Finally, thoroughly exasperated, she said 'If any of you can tell me the name of the town where you were born, without stuttering, I will have wild and passionate sex with you until your muscles ache and your eyes water. So, who wants to go first?' The Englishman piped up. 'B-b-b-b-b-b-b-irmingham', he said. 'That's no use, Trevor' said the speech therapist, 'whose next?' The Scotsman raised his hand and blurted out 'P-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-aisley'. 'That's no better. There'll be no sex for you, I'm afraid, Hamish. How about you, Paddy ?' The Irishman took a deep breath and eventually blurted out ' London '. 'Brilliant, Paddy' said the speech therapist and immediately set about living up to her promise. After 15 minutes of exceptionally steamy sex, the couple paused for breath and Paddy said ..................... '-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-erry'

Dear GA Advertiser
emails
I always like to read the news of what's due to happen around GA and SP which comes from your meetings with our Councillor, Loreto - keep it up. So when you're next talking to her, how about asking her if she can bring any influence to bear with the management of the cinema in Santa Pola to start showing English-language films, even if only one day per week or per fortnight. With the number of English-speaking people (and that includes many Germans, Dutch, and Scandinavians) on the SP padron these days, I'm sure it would be worth their while, and we would be spending our money in SP rather than Alicante or Torrevieja. Secondly, now that we're about to get a theatre space for the community in the SP Life Resort, isn't it about time we started a Gran Alacant Theatre Company so that those of us who enjoy participating in amateur drama don't have to choose between Torrevieja and Denia? Is there anyone else who would be interested in putting a theatre group together? Roger Keevil

Now to get down to the nitty gritty. It is nice to know there are people out there who look after the residents of Gran Alacant and listen to what the Council are intending to do. Unfortunately I shake my head in horror at the expense that is being spent on making Gran Alacant look nice, which of course is needed and will be most welcome in the future but what Gran Alacant needs is PAVEMENTS. It was great when the council started to make a pavement from the school up to the shops, but why did they not finish it off with concrete. The amount of concrete that is used here surely they could have spared a little more for a walkable pavement instead of a dirt track. It must be the busiest and fast track road leading from the school to the shops and now the school is occupied, surely for the childrens' safety alone, a decent walk way along this road is needed. The trolley bus is extremely useful and a much needed source of transport.
I have lived here for eleven years so have seen many improvements, but how I long for a decent pavement. Your comments will be most welcome. Maureen Tutton

I have been meaning to contact you regarding the problem of rubbish that is being constantly deposited on the MASA waste land up the hill at the side of Avda del Mediterraneo in Monte y Mar between Avda de Canarias and the beach road but one of your readers beat me to it with an email to you in the February edition. We own a property that faces this land and I fully agree with the comments that Fiona makes and especially regarding the dog walkers. I would imagine that on any day there will be in the region of 200 dog walks made over that land, you can imagine how much dog excrement would be on the ground. In the warmer months there is an awful smell wafting from the area. I don't know if fencing is the answer, it could be years before they build there, weeds would grow over the fencing making it look terrible.
If you do manage to get a meeting I would also appreciate you seeing when MASA are likely to complete the footpaths opposite 'The Frank's Bar', they have been incomplete since houses were built there some 4 years ago. I understand that the town hall are taking legal action to get these completed but it just takes so long for what is a relatively simple job. When done it would make the area look so much tidier and add to the general appearance of Gran Alacant. Many thanks Martin
Hello Barry & Sandra,
emails
I am writing to see if we can lobby Santa Pola council to spray the fir trees in all the residential areas of Gran Alacant. We have lived here for nearly two years and have been very aware of the problems they can cause especially to our pets, so we are naturally very vigilant, but this morning after a walk around the local streets, where we never saw any caterpillars, our dog, on arriving home was obviously distressed and salivating, so we took her to the vets and he said it was definately reaction to the hair from caterpillars. Luckily after treatment she appears to be okay. He told us that some councils spray every summer but that others don't bother. I think that given the quantity of these trees and close proximity to houses then Santa Pola should be spraying in summer to prevent the problems we have at this time of year. Its not just for our beloved pets but humans as well especially children. I cannot believe that it would be so expensive to do, in relation to other less urgent tasks. Regards Sandie Bradbury

Cannibals Recently, a large corporation hired several cannibals to increase their diversity. "You are all part of our team now," said the Human Resources rep during the welcoming briefing. "You get all the usual benefits and you can go to the cafeteria for something to eat, but please don't eat any employees." The cannibals promised they would not.
Four weeks later their boss remarked, "You're all working very hard and I'm satisfied with your work. We have noticed a marked increase in the whole company's performance. However, one of our secretaries has disappeared. Do any of you know what happened to her?" The cannibals all shook their heads, "No." After the boss had left, the leader of the cannibals said to the others, "Which one of you idiots ate the secretary?" A hand rose hesitantly.
"You fool!" the leader continued.
"For four weeks we've been eating managers And no one noticed anything. But NOOOooo, you had to go and eat someone who actually does something."

A view from across the pond “you think it’s cold in the UK” We live in the only border City of Canada, called Lloydminster. It's borders are separated by 4 huge red posts which run down the centre of the High Street. To the East is Saskatchewan, and to the West Alberta. Each having its own rules and regulations from its own tax codes to driving licences. You also have a different time zone if you travel into Saskatchewan about 30 mins. This year has been the first year in 4 decades that Canada has had a white Christmas coast to coast, and the coldest December in living history. Temperatures have regularly been in excess of -37c daytime with wind chills of -44c and below. Even in those extreme temperatures, shops are still open, roads are passable, everyone carries on with their day to day routines. NOTHING STOPS Every night all vehicles are plugged in so the engine block is kept warm ensuring that the oil stays in a viscous state and enables them to start when needed. The only problem we have come across in all these conditions is the fact you cannot see the road markings, and stop lines due to the compact snow, but this is mainly dealt with by using road signs on the sides of the roads indicating stop lines etc. There is no apparent road rage and no one gets stressed or blows their horn, they just drive slowly and very courteously with priority always given to pedestrians. If you even look over you shoulder as you walk down the street, they will stop and wave you across the road whether you intended to cross or not !!!! For such a vast country the produce in the shops is fantastic. Meat is the best quality you will ever find and extremely well priced. An example of this is a rib roast joint weighing 2 kg which cost $12 (£6), in the UK this would be £25 - £30. Poultry however isn't such a bargain and is a little on the expensive side, although again, the quality is superb. Fruit & Veg, are worthy of any Spanish market stall, with the just picked quality you would never believe possible, when you think of how far these items have travelled to get to the shops. Fuel (Contrary to what they think here) is very cheap. We pay 69cents a litre (approx 30cent in the euro world). Huge trucks are still popular here, but they are starting to understand global warming and where they have the normal disabled parking spots near the shop doors, they also have reserved spots for bio fuel vehicles. For what we have seen so far, Canada is a wonderful Country. The people are the friendliest and most helpful you could ever wish to live with. Yes its cold, but you do get used to it, it isn't a damp cold which burns into your bones, and if you dress correctly it isn't a problem at all. The worst part is your nostril hairs freezing when you breathe, but when you see the vast blue skies and wonderful scenery, I think I'm happy to live with that. If you are considering a move to Canada, or just looking for a holiday home whilst the dollar is still weak, then Liz is the person to contact. I can say from personal experience, this lady will help you beyond all expectations and is there for everything you may ever need !!!!!!! Liz Frieser, Mac's Realty Ltd, Lloydminster, Alberta. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.'
The teacher paused and said,
'But no one knows what God looks like.' Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'

Dave The Computerman.
Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by Dave the Computerman (MCSE)
Computer Freezes Up
Most of us have come across the scenario where the computer has completely frozen up and neither responds to the keyboard, nor to the mouse. Whenever this happens try to remember what you were doing last. Some people pull the plug from the back of the computer, or unplug the lead from a laptop and wait up to three hours for the battery to run down and shut the computer down. DO NOT yank the power chord out. This will seriously damage the hard disk, and may result in a catastrophic loss of data. The heads of a hard disk must be parked to prevent them from touching the disk on starting up. Hold your finger on the power button for approximately ten seconds and the computer will switch off, and should park the heads of the hard disk at the same time. Once the computer has shut down, remove the power lead and wait for about a minute to allow any errant capacitors to discharge, plug the lead back in and restart your computer. If the computer starts up as normal, fine. However, if the computer does not start correctly, please call me so that we can save your data before it becomes corrupted. If when the computer restarts you notice a problem with the speed of the computer, and you had just installed a new programme or update before the computer froze, try to remove the said application once the computer is running again.
Apple Safari browser Running On Windows Once again the security companies have issued major warnings against Windows users using the Safari web browser. Unfortunately this is now automatically downloaded among the latest update of Apple´s Quicktime software or the latest update to iTunes. DO NOT use this browser if you are tempted. Safari on Windows fared the worst of all in testing with respect to private browsing, and did not clear any data at all, either before entering, or after exiting websites, even told to do so. The data remained on the computer, in a place a hacker would obviously look to find passwords and the like. Even on Mac OS X, Safari’s behaviour was quirky; in no case was the HTML 5 database storage cleared before or after private browsing. Previously set cookies seem to continue to be available if the user entered a private browsing session. If you want an alternative to Internet explorer, then use Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or Avast, which looks like IE. Sadly the much missed Netscape browser is no longer being updated (though it is still available). I hope that you find the column useful and if you have any further questions, or need assistance please call me on 637 55 45 79 or contact me at gacomputerman@yahoo.es I am now an official installer/operator of TORRESAT TV with prices starting from 120 euros.

Bowls
and Social Club – Sponsored by 1car1.com Charity Fun Day Our Club Chairman, Mike Farrelly recently designated a week as being the club’s Charity Fund Raising Week, which culminated with a Charity Fun Day sponsored by top private health insurance company, El Perpetuo Socorro.. Mike, ably assisted by Dave Melville our Competition Secretary, his missus Liz and the scribe’s ‘better half’ Anne Stanaway, worked very hard to ensure that the day was a success, and developed a bowls version of ‘crazy golf’. A large number of both existing club members and other residents of Gran Alacant for whom bowls was previously a mystery, supported the day, in spite of it being one of the windiest days in GA history. Our club coach, former Spanish National Team Manager Bill Young and our other top bowlers were on hand to give initial instruction to those first-time bowlers, and guide them through the bowling obstacle course. The more portly of us were also used as anchor weights, to stop a number of slim young things from being blown away in the severe winds. At one stage some of the bowlers had to run for cover as part of a felt roof was torn off by the wind, but thankfully no one was injured, and we were able to continue. During the afternoon we were graced by two famous personalities, in the guise of Gran Alacant Advertiser owners, Sandra and Barry. Sandra and Barry were given
instruction and guided around by top bowler Dave Melville, and as the photographs show, both performed very well in the difficult conditions.

The afternoon raised a considerable sum for our various charities, was enjoyed by all who attended, and our thanks are extended to all those brave souls who supported us. In the evening we had an excellent meal in the Rincon restaurant; raised more money by way of raffle and auction, and then Maria and Judy from El Perpetuo Socorro presented the Charity Cup to the winner of the afternoon competition, Jack Ryley. Jack is one of life’s gentlemen who will doubtless not be troubled by my description of him as being one of our more senior members. He showed all ‘us youngsters’ the way to bowl by not only winning the competition, but also getting the joint second highest score as well. In total, we managed to amass over E1,400, which already has or will be distributed among a number of very worthy causes. On behalf of our club, the scribe wishes to thank all of those who supported our charities, and we hope to see you at friendly club in the future. Monte Mar – 1car1 Open held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 17th/18th/19th February at the Monte Mar Club Starting last Tuesday, twenty-four teams and ninety-six bowlers commenced battle for the prestigious 1car1 Open Trophy, and for the next three days the teams were split into four leagues and played five matches against each other, all blessed by clear blue skies and warm sunshine. The four teams in each league that progressed to the semi-finals on Thursday afternoon were, Val Sherry from San Luis, Alan De-Boar from Indalo in Almeria, and two home sides from Monte Mar, those of Colin Armitage and Ray Lilley. After two quality semi-finals watched by a large enthusiastic crowd, with the exception of club wine taster Harry who fell asleep in the warm sun, the final was played between the teams of Val Sherry and Colin Armitage. In a final of high quality, Val Sherry’s previously unbeaten team were comfortably beaten by the Monte Mar team of Lynne Armitage, Janet Gatward, Ron Gatward and skipped by Colin Armitage, ably assisted by the partisan but fair crowd. The third and fourth place final was also

DIETS CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTH Not every food has the same quality, as anybody can guess just having a look at the prices: low price diets are sooner or later more expensive due to the health problems the Vet will have to treat. How can we differentiate a well formulated diet from more “common” ones? First of all, we have to pay attention to the label, where ingredients and analysis can be seen: -Chemical analysis is telling us the content of “food” of the diet: protein, fibre, fats, vitamins and minerals percentage. It’s very important to make sure all these percentages are the right ones for our animal, according to his age and size. For example, protein requirements are higher in a puppy than in an adult, and calcium and vitamin D requirements are much higher in pregnant females. The right percentage of fat and salt will vary a lot for younger and older animals. -Ingredients are telling us the source of those proteins, fats, fibre, etc, that means, if they are coming from poultry, fish, soy, corn, egg, etc. This is particularly important if our pet is allergic against one of these ingredients, or
62
simply doesn’t assimilate it very well. We will also be able to determinate the quality of the sources: is not the same “chicken flour” than “chicken meat”, even if in both cases the content of protein is the same. In the first case, the quality of the protein will be much inferior. It’s useful to know that, by law, ingredients list must be written the following way: first the most abundant ones (before cooking them), and finally the least abundant ones. Some ingredients added in very small quantities (for example some spices), don’t need to appear at the ingredients list. It’s very common that, after processing the food, the final composition of the food varies, because water disappears, so, those sources rich in water which appear at the beginning if the ingredients list, may finally be not so abundant. This won’t make the quality of the diet go down, but is good to know that the “extra” money we are paying for a “rich in lamb” diet, may not be justified. Beginners Lesson Greetings It’s always a good idea to have a few of these up your sleeve, so that at least you’ve got something to say. Very often, once you’ve got this out of the way, other things can follow. ‘Hola’ is the obvious form of greeting, and can be used in informal and formal occasions. ‘¿Cómo estás?’ (or the formal, ‘¿cómo está?’) is a common way of asking how someone is, but you also have others: ‘¿cómo estamos?’, ¿qué tal?’, ‘¿cómo andas?’, ‘¿qué hay?’, ‘¿cómo vas?’, or simply ‘¿qué?’ are other ways of saying the same thing. ‘Muy bien’ is the usual reply, but again there are alternatives: ‘Fantástico’, or ‘excelente’, if you’re feeling really good. ‘Regular’ is what you say if you´re just OK, and ‘mal’, or ‘fatal’ is the other end of the scale.
Second prize of a meal for two went to Barry of Monte y Mar Third prize of a case of wine went to ticket number pink 98 still unclaimed!!

When you meet someone for the first time, you can say ‘encantado’ (‘encantada’ for a woman) or ‘mucho gusto’. This means, ‘great pleasure’ or ‘delighted’. If the other person gets it in first, you say ‘igualmente’, ‘the same to you’.
