We hope you had a great Christmas, and that this will be a better year for everyone in these difficult times. This month we welcome “Legal Solutions” to the magazine with their new monthly column. Please give them a call if you would like them to answer your motoring questions in their monthly column.
We apologise to any advertisers who may have missed our deadline for this month. Our printer closed early for the Christmas holidays so the magazine had to be with him a week earlier than usual, meaning that we have had one week less to produce this edition. Have a good month.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

The big news is that central government has allocated monies to all towns in Spain BASED UPON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE REGISTERED ON THE PADRON. This has amounted to around 5 million given to Santa Pola, of which over 1 million will be allocated to Gran Alacant. This is in addition to all other monies. You will have seen from our “review of the year” that big sums of cash were spent on our Urbanisation over the past year and this is to continue throughout 2009. One of the first things the Town Hall is to instigate is a cycle way from the top of GA by the lighthouse, to Santa Pola. It is then hoped that this will then be extended, to and
around, Gran Alacant. We spoke to the Town Hall recently about 2 areas of standing water

from the rains and rubbish. The area by the roundabout on entering GA has now been rectified with the coupling up of the drains. When this is finished they will then hopefully move on to the one we highlighted down near the Carabasi Bars.
to Santa Pola, you will see on your right, near the new sewage works, piles of seagrass that has been lifted from the beaches. This can eventually be used in fertilisers and the like, but our Council will have to pay for its very expensive transportation.
The rubbish we showed pictures of has at time of going to press, been pushed into one area where it will then be taken away.
The siting of the viewing area we
Almost 1,4 million euros has been invested installing two new pumping systems. The Mayor of Santa Pola, Miguel Zaragoza, together with Coral Robles, visited the outcome of the works. This investment ensures water and sewerage to the bottom of Gran mentioned last month was visited by the Mayor to see its progress. The Town Hall have obtained a grant for equipment for our Gran Alacant library. The Councillor for Culture Feli Dancer, has been able to use this grant, valued close to 14,000 euro, on a transparency
Alacant is now sorted. Another is to be built in the coming year to look after the areas “up the hill”. We did ask why the Clot had been fenced in Gran Alacant. This comes under Elche Council. If you are unhappy about this, please write to Elche Town Hall voicing your view. As you drive between Gran Alacant

projector, screen, digital video camera, a large tv, tele copier, SLR camera, laptop, head phones and a paper guillotine. A council member said that with these of these items the library can now independently organise activities which will extend the fun and culture, such as story telling, workshops, film and cine forum conferences, language courses and much more, including a fax service and the elaboration of audio visual material. Our councillour for Gran Alacant Loreto Cascales, added “we found time to pursue and fight for this subsidy, which has arrived at the best time, because these items will serve to cover everything you need to organise in the two new municipal rooms available in the Santa Pola Life Resort, in conjunction with the library. The new rooms have the capacity to allow us to develop new activities to more people on Gran Alacant.
Councillors who distribute to every child a “cartucho” which is a paper cone that contains sweets and candies. The one thing the children have to do to get their gift is to sing the cartucho song. The Gran Alacant train has been a huge success and their license renewal comes up in the new year. It is not surprising that four or five companys are throwing their hats into the ring, to operate the train for next year. We are assured that there will be a great deal of nice changes on the way for Gran Alacant in the coming year. There is still the possibility that next year the golf course may happen. If it does we will of course have all of the info for you on its progress Well, as someone once said “that is the end of the news”, but this could just be the start of lots more in this 2009.
A tradition held in Santa Pola schools now extends to our GA school in that the last day of school before Christmas sees the children being visited by the Mayor &

The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.' The other man said, 'What is the name of the restaurant?'

This page was reserved for the carol singing in the Plaza Mayor on Gran Alacant, to be performed by the “Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group. They said.....you can always organise an outside event here in Spain. They said.... it never rains in Spain.
Unfortunately the heavens opened an hour before the perfomance was due to start and completely washed out the event. Not only was it to be a carol concert, but also the chance to add more money to local charities. The choir did perform in their previous two events held in La Marina.
As the above was washed out....we went down to the beach to watch the submarine racing. We have a picture below..........

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.
The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.
When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.
She said, 'you should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.'

Happy New Year to everyone, I hope you had a merry time over the festive season.
Over the next few months I will be discussing the SKIN and topicʼs relating to it.
The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It covers an area of between 1.2 and 2m2 and accounts for approximately 12 per cent of our total body weight. The skin moulds to and moves with our body, creating a barrier that separates our inside from the outside world. Our skin has to be tough so that it can withstand physical and chemical assault. The skin also has to be sensitive so as to enable it to respond to external and internal environmental changes.
The skin works all the time, even when we sleep assisting the body to regulate and protect. Healthy skin provides some protecting from invasion by bacteria and other micro-organisms, damage by infrared (heat) rays and ultraviolet. Basic Skin Types
The skin is normally described as being either balanced (normal) dry, greasy or combination. The skin may also be congested, dehydrated, sensitive, mature or infected.
Balanced skin is as it suggests. It had a good balance of oil and moisture, which keeps the skin soft, supple and flexible. Desquamination and cell generation take place at the same rate. The pores are small, the texture fine and even, and the colour healthy. The skin will feel warm to the touch. This is due to its good blood supply. Balanced skin rarely develops spots or blemishes and if it does, it will heal well. TO BE CONTINUED NEXT MONTH.

Hi everybody, In January the 5th we have parades for the Three Kings in every corner on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola it will take place on the 5th, of course, at 7 pm. But before on the 2nd you can attend to a concert at the Culture House or take your children to exhibition in the Fortress-Castle on cribs..
Kings brings you lots of presents. Even if It’s the coldest winter I’ve ever seen, try to enjoy as much as you can. Bye-bye dear readers.
I know in Torrevieja there is another beautiful one. If you happen to go to Alicante, pop in at the Diputación building, and have a look at the master pieces they got there. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings to bring presents to Jesus, is real theatre carried out by amateurs. This event is declared of national tourist interest. To finish if you want to enjoy which is said to be the best of all Three Kings parades you have to go to Alcoy. In my opinion is simply “magic”. I hope one of our beloved

You may read of reports in our magazine about this lady “Shell”, who devotes a lot of her time to looking after abandoned and feral cats. She looks after their welfare and gets them looked after at the local vet, all from money she collects at her fund raising events. Story of trapping ferals in our area. "First point out about Feral cats by Super Value trash containers: they are the most endangered ones due to the filth of the area where they live but they are the most difficult to catch because they are not hungry (many different people feed them at all hrs.) so when I or when I get help from the two UK groups Feral Friends, or the IAR come to help me we are not lucky enough to catch them. ´ On my own I can only do as many as the raised funds allow me. It is very hard work, it takes lots of trips and lots of time consuming but that is what I am urge to do to prevent overpopulation for their sake and for our safety, not only do they get run by cars but more important, causing also driver´s accidents. This last October the IAR (International Animal Rescue Org) came very late in the eve. and we stood there for about 90 min. without ANY luck, not even one got in. They did help me in other two areas, Creta Street and at an Ave. behind Thomas Green where three lovely ladies Cathy and friends, care enough for those cats that live in their streets and who this time have put in some money to help with expenses of the IAR group who sterelize a couple from that area and who came all the way from south Torrevieja. The other English private organization helping the ferals and who come almost once every year, named Feral Friends help me lots more dedicating 3 days trapping cats in the areas I do, GA, south Alicante and Santa Pola. NOTE: Would like to clarify that I do not have a land nor a shelter, that I only sterelize feral cats mainly and try to help any dog running lost or abandoned whenever I can. Again my strong advice and asking you who reads this report to pass the word "ANIMALS ARE NOT TOYS, DO NOT GET ONE FOR A XMAS PRESENT & ALSO ADD: TO PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANIMALS, A D O P T. There is always one you would love to take home that NEEDS YOU" From Shell, the Animal Feral Friend for Gran Alacant, Santa Pola, El Altet & South Alicante city For Adoptions or donations or any questions, contact Shell at shellmapfre@gmail.com Tel. 697 574 199

Carabasi Bars Complex. A transformation at the Carabasi Bars Complex, where many of the businesses there have contributed to the stairway being repainted and the steps repaired and the steps adjusted in the hope of them not breaking so often. The area which was always waste ground has now been landscaped to include, seating, trees, shrubs shingle and a watering system for the plants.
All in all, a lovely area.
Special thanks must go to two ladies who have worked hard to make this all possible, Emma from Shooters Bar and Marabel from Oduills.

Australian Sensitivity!
Three Aussies were working on a high-rise building project Steve, Bruce and Bluey. Steve falls off and is killed instantly. As the ambulance takes the body away, Bruce says, 'Someone should go and tell his wife.' Bluey says, 'OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it.' Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Fosters. Bruce says, 'Where did you get that, Bluey?' 'Steve's wife gave it to me,' Bluey replies. 'That's unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you the beer?' 'Well not exactly,' Bluey says. 'When she answered the door, I said to her,'You must be Steve's widow'. She said, 'No, I'm not a widow.' And I said, 'I'll bet you a case of Fosters you are'.'

The Bacon Tree
Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert, wandering aimlessly and close to death. They are close to just lying down and waiting for the inevitable, when all of a sudden....... "Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell? Ees bacon I ahm sure of eet." "Si, Luis eet smells like bacon to meee". So, with renewed strength, they struggle up the next sand dune, and there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon. There's raw bacon, dripping with moisture .. there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon... every imaginable kind of cured pig meat. "Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved! Eet EES a bacon tree!" "Luis, are you sure ees not a meerage?; We ees in the Desert don't forget." "Pepe when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smeell like bacon...ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree". And with that ...Luis races toward the tree. He gets to within 5 meters, with Pepe following closely behind, when all of a sudden a machine gun opens up and Luis is cut down in his tracks. It is clear he is mortally wounded but, true friend that he is, he manages to warn Pepe with his dying breath. "Pepe...go back man,you was right...ees not a bacon tree." "Luis Luis, mi amigo...what ees it? "Pepe...ees not a bacon tree... ... Eees a Ham Bush

Welcome to the computer column presented by Dave the Computerman.
Dave The Computerman.
This trojan horse mimicks the Windows XP activation interface while collecting the credit card details that you submit. Guess what happens when a gullible end user falls victim into this social engineering attack? Their credit card details end up automatically into a channel specifically set for that purpose. Once the user enters all the validated data, the new version of the tool automatically removes itself as if the activation was successful. Moreover, a bogus “verified by Visa” message that also requests a social security number and a date of birth makes the trojan the perfect tool in the hands of identity thieves relying on nothing else but plain simple social engineering, by impersonating Microsoft.

Cleaning your Hard disk
Keeping your hard disk clean and tidy helps it to run quicker and last longer. There are a series of housekeeping steps that you the owner can do to maintain the life of your hard disk. Click on START, then MY COMPUTER and right-click on the hard disk icon. Choose Sharing and Security and click the Disk Cleanup button. Check the list of files and folders that you wish to remove and click OK. Once completed click the TOOLS tab and analyse the disk. If needed defragment the hard disk. Bear in mind that defragmenting the hard disk slows the computer down whilst it is running and you should expect the task to take at least 30 minutes.
WinAntiVirus2009
This programme is also a trojan that is designed to look like a piece of security software that is part of Microsoft´s Security Centre. It is not. It is a very nasty trojan that infects your computer and starts by demanding $39.95 to activate and then tells you a fictitious amount of infections have been found on your computer...click here to clean your computer. Another demand for payment follows and all the while more spyware is being downloaded to your computer. Close this spyware down immediately.
Moving programmes from an old computer to a new one
If your hard disk fails it is important to get all of your documents, videos, music files and any other saved data off of it. It is also important to remember all the programmes that you use as well. One way to do this easily is to make a text document in notepad and list all of the programmes that you use, thus they can be easily reloaded. It is also important to make a note of any paid for keys as well, especially Microsoft Office keys, and paid for anti-virus software. When the programme is re-installed these keys will be required once again, otherwise you will have to pay for them once again. I hope that you find the column useful and if you have any further questions, or need assistance please call me on 637 554579 or contact me at gacomputerman@yahoo.es

TORREON VILLA FOR SALE ON GRAN ALACANT 400 sq.m PLOT 609 755 237 NEW YEAR'S RECIPE Take twelve, fine, full-grown months, see that these are thoroughly free from all old memories of bitterness, rancor, hate and jealousy; cleanse them completely from every clinging spite: pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short , see that these months are freed from all the past; have them as fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. This batch will keep for just one year. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot in this way), but prepare one day at a time, as follows: Into each day put twelve parts of faith, eleven of patience, ten of courage, nine of of work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), eight of hope, seven of fidelity, six of liberality, five of kindness, four of rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad, don't do it), three of prayer, two of meditation, and one well selected resolution. If you have no conscientious scruples, put in about a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor. Pour into the whole love ad libitum and mix with a vim. Cook thoroughly in a fervent heat; garnish with a few smiles and a sprig of joy; then serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness, and
a Happy New Year is certain.

The entertainment SCENE in and around gran alacant a review of the year
As last year came to an end and this one inevitably began, I thought I would take a look back at all the venues and artists I reviewed in 2008. A quick recall of some good nights, and really good nights that I wouldn't be able to remember without checking the back catalogue of The Gran Alacant Advertiser. As I read through the year's editions, two questions kept re-appearing - Did I ever get home in one piece from there and did I really say that? We began in January at Flannagan's Bar to watch the drag artist stand up Dyna Rod, and even though I hoped that this could be the start of a few more comics passing through Gran Alacant, sadly it was not to be. In February's edition, I tried to keep your new year's resolutions up by informing you of two venues where you can learn to dance - Salon de Baile in the G.A Centre and Club Camelot Pop Bar on the Santa Pola beach front. Well this year I say drink and smoke your brains out because I can't manage to stop either. In March we reported on the very fashionable Mandala Bar in the G.A. Centre. April led me to another beautiful Spanish chill out bar named El Paripe. Los Arenales Bar The Meeting Point took us through May, Steve Dale entertained us at Churchill's Bar in June and The Yellow Submarine in
July ended the hottest months of the year. Jimmy Mac at Raffles Bar took us through the August edition and in September's magazine, I reported on my favourite venue of the year - Club Amanacer, another seafront venue that only opens during the summer months. In October we talked about the Volvo Ocean Race which began in Alicante. November, and back to Flannagan's Bar to watch musical duo Omega. Finally December, we covered The Beer House where the funky house outfit Seaclub performed. Due to overwhelming circumstances of late i.e. we're all skint! Gran Alacant's music and entertainment scene has become a lot quieter this winter. This is definitely a trend throughout the world, but fear not, some of the best pop and culture movements are usually created in the midst of a depression. What about making money and just generally surviving I hear you say. Well come on! Let's get our priorities right. What would life be worth without a good night out every now and again? About the same as the pound against the euro at the moment! Tasty-Fox Promotions

DOGS LANGUAGE CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTH -Crying: is the most common way to ask for something: to go for a walk, to have some food, or just some cuddles. It’s also their way to show the pain. Another important thing to be taken into account with dog’s facial expressions is the mouth: a relaxed dog won’t have his mouth closed too tight, probably it will remain half open, but when he is alert, the mouth will be completely closed. That means, if we are trying to train a dog and he is looking at us with a half open mouth, that means he is not paying any attention at all. As we said, dogs are social animals, so they look for communication with other individuals (humans or dogs), and sometimes a particular communication code is created between dog and owner, which will be even more sophisticated if the owner can understand correctly what the dog tries to tell him, not only by using sounds, but also by body gestures: -Tail waving: it normally indicates happiness, but when they are approaching us dragging on the floor and tail waving, that means they are trying to calm us down or apologize, if they think we are very nervous. The opposite gesture would be putting the tail between the back legs, which indicates sadness, panic or submission. Some dogs, such as Greyhounds, have the
62
tail down all the time, except when they are running, so in this case, the position of the tail won’t be of use for guessing the mood of the dog. -Blinking: some dogs love to play blinking with their owner, and those dogs will normally calm down if a stranger approaches them blinking. -Getting paralyzed: they do it when a bigger animal is approaching, but also when we intimidate them. -Swallowing: it indicates panic plus submission. -Erected ears: alert. -Plied ears (in dogs which normally have them erected): submission, panic, or maybe an imminent aggression. In dogs with hanging ears, the two possibilities would be: -Ears hanging down peacefully: relaxation. -Trying to lift the ears: alert. -Lifting the lips and showing the teeth: imminent aggression.

The learning of the Spanish Language supplied by Matthew Brock
SLS
Lesson (Advanced) Translating ‘–ing’ Words When you see a word that ends in ‘– ing’, you would normally assume that it was a verb, but this is often a classic case of where people should translate for meaning rather than word-for-word. In English, you see, the ‘–ing’ part of a verb is often a noun or adjective. Let’s look at some examples:
Lessons of the Month Lesson (beginners): LESSON OF THE MONTH
1) Sometimes it is a verb! If you are talking in a progressive tense, this also works perfectly well in Spanish. a. ‘I am reading’ – ‘estoy leyendo’
Posted By teacher
Lesson (beginners) Al + the infinitive This is a nice construction because it uses the infinitive, and so it’s not necessary to think when doing so about the tense or person doing the action – that comes later! ‘Al’ + infinitive means ‘on doing something’ or ‘upon doing something’. ‘Al oír el teléfono, lo contestó’ – ‘on hearing the phone, he answered it’. Notice, as I say, that the conjugation has to come in the verb that accompanies the ‘al + infinitive’, whether that verb comes before or after it. The verb in the infinitive merely mirrors the conjugation of the other verb. But you do get two verbs for the price of one! Here are examples:
another
couple
of
2) In this respect, if a person is doing two things at once, you can use the gerund in both Spanish and English. a. ‘He went away, singing’ – ‘se fue, cantando’ 3) Sometimes it is a noun. In this case, using the gerund in Spanish is incorrect. Sometimes you use an infinitive, sometimes another noun, and sometimes you have to recast the sentence! a. ‘Smoking is forbidden’ – ‘está prohibido fumar’ b. ‘I like swimming’ – ‘Me gusta la natación’ c. I am thinking about living in Spain’ – ‘Pienso en vivir en España’ 4) Sometimes it is an adjective. In this case, you have to find the correct adjective, which will not be the gerund. a. ‘He is a charming man’ – ‘es un hombre encantador’ b. ‘It’s a depressing situation’ – ‘es una situación deprimente’ c. ‘His classes are always boring’ – ‘sus clases siempre son aburridas’
‘Me puse contento al verte’ – ‘I was happy on seeing you’ ‘Al oír el himno nacional, todos se levantaron’ – ‘on hearing the national anthem, everyone stood up’.
