We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We thought that you might be interested in, hopefully the new changes coming to the area. The Santa Pola Periódico newspaper, logo below, ran an article of the interview they

conducted with the Mayor of Santa Pola, Miguel Zaragoza, and have very kindly given us permission to print it in our magazine. It was printed in Spanish which we have had translated into English. It has information concerning new projects in 2014 for Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. You can read the weekly edition of their newspaper online at: www.periodicosantapola.es where if necessary you can copy and paste the articles into an internet translator. From the Mayor It seems like 2014 will be the year in which we will see the light at the end of the dark crisis tunnel. Our society is asking for more jobs and above all, hope. Sustained by projects & ideas that will not be put into practice if firstly we don’t manage our resources appropriately. In this respect, we have to point out that Santa Pola’s Town Hall has one of the lowest depts of the Valencian Community (about 236€ per habitant). It is also a Town Hall that pays its suppliers promptly, for example, on Friday 27th of December bills were paid for the invoices of the 5th of December… a lot sooner than the stipulated 60 days. “Although this doesn’t mean anything if we cannot answer the main worries of our residents: work. This will give stability not only to the municipality but also to the families, who are our main concern” says Miguel Zaragoza, Mayor of Santa Pola. He recognizes that although it isn’t a direct responsibility of the Town Hall, “from the Council we must provide opportunities, try to generate more jobs. We have to be conscious about what is going wrong in our society, unite neighbors and administrations to try to eradicate our problems”. Projects in the horizon Many are the projects in 2014 for Santa Pola. The first and most wanted Is the new Bus Station, followed by Cableski, the Skate Park and the Balsares Project, which contemplates not only the creation of a Golf Course, but also a road renewal and the construction of several resorts and hotels. All of these initiatives should start this year and will bring more jobs to the area.

First, the Bus Station, Zaragoza wanted to put a starting date on the project. “During this month of January, we expect that within the next 15 days the contract proposal will be awarded. In theory, end of February-beginning of March will be the starting date of the construction” Keep in mind that the development of this bus station will bring more jobs to the area, with new businesses and new leisure premises. New opportunities & more jobs, a combination that “will give an impulse to the whole area, with the addition of more land for the Town Hall, land that will be destined for new businesses and local entrepreneurs”. Regarding the Balsares Project, it will “help the economy of our municipality take off” Zaragoza assures that “it won’t be an easy task, but Santa Pola is one of the few municipalities that still has a high demand of housing. Not only from national buyers but also internationally. That’s why there are several investors interested, but they are cautious and are waiting for a clear sign of change in our economy”. Overcome Austerity It is previewed that for 2014 austerity won’t be the dominant note for the budget terms. “We cannot sit still and wait for things to happen, we need to keep moving and create opportunities. We can only do this by fighting and improving our local touristic offer in the Valencian Community”. We would like to highlight the new infrastructure that will be put in place with project Cableski, a project that will be very attractive from a touristic point of view and it will create new jobs. On the other side, the construction of Skate Park, in the area of Xiprerets “will be an area for teenagers, who have been asking for a space to practice for quite some time”. Sports Turism, will be “one of the main economic motors and center of attraction for our visitors”. Education and Development. Education is priority, and it starts with the basics, with the construction of a Center of Social Initiative in Gran Alacant, “a good quality public center, a different, promising & free center, with which we will hope that it will propitiate an increase in the padron numbers. With this we will get more funds from the Generalitat, these funds will help give more infrastructure and services to an area of Santa Pola which has increased its population in the last two years in a 24%”. Immediate Start With respect to the second school in Gran Alacant, the Mayor of Valencia was waiting for a transfer of the lands and all the necessary documents “to start the project immediately. During the first trimester of 2014 there will be all the process of notifications and adjudications. The objective is that during the year the works will start”. Finally, with 2014 ahead of us, Zaragoza seems to be sure that we will start to see a difference and that we will get out of this situation, we “have to be positive, but keeping our feet on the ground. The tendency has to start changing, that is what the numbers are showing”. He also pointed out that “this doesn’t mean that we have solved the problem. In the mean time, the Town Hall will continue to increase Social Services budgets, to help with the necessities of people with few/no means and help them palliate their problems”. ---------------------------------------------------------------

and now onto other news Hi Barry & Sandra This email is following up Nils' letter re poor tele connections. My husband and I have an apartment up near the top of the hill just beyond the site of the new market. Over the years we too have experienced either weak or no signal on our mobiles regardless of whom the provider is/was. The godsend for us is wi-fi which we installed recently which allows us to send and receive emails via internet connection. However, it remains frustrating for us not to be able to text, email or call someone from our mobile phones! There are mast-like structures up by the new recycling centre which surely could be used by operators to erect an antenna on to the existing masts? (It is also worth noting that Telefonica has removed the public phone from outside our urbanisation which further adds to problems in the event of an emergency!) May we wish you and your readers a very happy and healthy new year 2014. Keep up the great work! Regards Alex & Helen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi, After in a previous edition of this magazine, Mr. Basset was praising Shell for her animal and personal help to her mother, I then got a nasty, making no sense, call from a couple who turned out accusing & threating me to call police on her for abandoning the Ferals. NOT TRUE, ON THE CONTRARY WE TRY TO HOME AS MANY AS POSSIBLE I have too many things on my hands helping GA animals & abouts, almost on my own now, to have to put up with time wasters & nasty people, so if you don´t want help or are going to help, please be kind enough to let us continue helping animals and don´t call. Thanks, Regards SHELL, FEREL FRIENDS ---------------------------------------------On the right a picture of the plans for the dog area which will be situated near to the petrol station on GA, marked on our GA Map. It will be a 3,000 sq m area with gardens, benches, trees etc and will be looked after and kept clean by local residents. It will include dog agility and training facilities. ------------------------------------------Generally, the local area is slowly looking up with more airport traffic, new houses being built, etc. The Town Hall are also receiving a bit more money from central Government for 2014 and meetings are taking place as to where and how to allocate this money. The new ventures spoken about in the Mayors interview are aimed at getting more people employed in the area. -------------------------------------------------------------GO TO PAGE 10

The two hurdles holding up the market is that our Town Hall are not happy with the electrics to the site and that one area has a very steep slope which has to be rectified. The Town Hall will NOT sign off the project until these problems have been solved. ---------------------------------------------If you would like to vote in a couple of upcoming elections, please go to the Gran Alacant Council Office to collect a form (shown here), fill it in, couple it to a copy of your NIE or passport. This has nothing to do with the padron, but puts you onto the voting list. There are two elections to consider voting on. The European census allows you to vote in Spain, but if you vote here, you cannot also vote in the UK. You can vote by post if required. ---------------------------------------------The Santa Pola 1/2 marathon took place on Sunday 19th January which we hope to have a report on in next months magazine. There will be over 9,000 runners looked after throughout the event by 190 troops, 40 civil guard, and the regional police. -------------------------------------------------Thats it, more news next month

Sandra & Barry

This strange-looking little plant appears in abundance after winter rains on bare, sandy ground, before the Spring vegetation takes hold. ICE FISHING A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject, and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice. After positioning her comfy camping stool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a cup of cappuccino from her thermos and began to cut yet another hole. Again from the heavens the voice bellowed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" She stopped, looked skyward, and said, "IS THAT YOU LORD?" The voice replied, "NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE SKATING RINK!" supplied by Sheila Mitchell

John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried hard to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's language. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot by the neck and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hands, then grabbed the bird and stuffed it in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot screamed abuse, and then there was total quiet. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot stepped out onto John's outstretched arm and said, “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my vulgar and unforgivable behaviour." John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. Then the parrot spoke again and said, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did? Supplied by Keith Artherton

PINE TREE CATERPILLAR SEASON IS STARTING

Just like every winter, we are answering at our practice lots of questions about pine tree caterpillars. In previous articles we have explained how they damage animal (and human) tissues, and the treatment. In this year article, we are going to write about pest control oriented to these caterpillars. First of all, we are going to remind everybody what are exactly these caterpillars, and what kind of damage they cause to animals and persons. These caterpillars are the larval stage of a moth (Taumatopoea pythiocampa), that lives at the Mediterranean area. The diet of the larvae consists basically of pine tree leaves. The adult stage (the moth), has its reproduction season in summer, and, just like every moth or butterfly, suffers a metamorphosis before becoming an adult. The larvae, depending on the stage, live at the massive white cocoons they build at pine trees branches, or at the ground. The caterpillars have their body surface covered by stinging hair (the name of the toxin is taumatopeine), which will produce a very serious irritation of the tissues by direct contact or even by inhalation. The most commonly affected pets are young dogs which always want to investigate everything, and don’t have enough experience for avoiding the danger. Since they use lips and tongue for investigating, the damage usually appears at these areas, and the problem may be even bigger if the animal swallows some caterpillars. Immediately after contacting the caterpillar, a big irritation and burning sensation appears at lips and tongue, which gets extremely swollen in a matter of minutes (sometimes there is not enough room in the mouth for the swollen tongue). Conjunctivitis may also appear, and violent gastric symptoms if some caterpillars have been swollen. We are not talking of a poisoning, but a damage at the tissues by contacting the toxin. The degree of damage depends mainly on how big is the damaged area, and the fact that, sometimes, the animal is unable to eat or drink for several days, so a dripping becomes absolutely necessary. Apart from the dripping, a complete treatment will also include antibiotics and steroids. In some serious cases, the tongue may have a permanent damage. What can we do if our dog has licked a caterpillar? First thing would be trying to clean the tongue surface and the animal face with water, in order to remove the remaining of stinging hair and toxin from it. We must use rubber gloves if possible, because if we touch directly the tongue, our hands will get burnt as well. After this, we will find a Vet practice as soon as possible. When is the dangerous season in this area? Normally from January to the end of March, because that is the moment when the caterpillars leave the cocoons and the trees and search at the ground a place where continuing their life cycle, but the exact moment will be slightly different depending on the weather and temperature.

What can I do if I have pine trees at my garden? The best moment for neutralizing this pest is in summer, when the adult moths are flying around. There are some pheromones traps available, which catch the males, making the reproduction impossible without affecting any other species or the environment. Some Town Halls give this pheromones traps to the citizens for free. Another interesting (and non-hazardous) way for stopping this problem would be to use a kind of “homemade Elizabethan collars” for the trees (see photo) which stop the caterpillars in their way to the ground. They can’t escape from the trap and starve to death. Finally, another good idea would be to let the natural caterpillar predators (birds such as chickadees, hoopoes and wagtails) do their job. The will eat all the caterpillars without leaving any toxic remaining. In order to make our garden attractive for these birds, we can place wood nest boxes, small amounts of food, etc. We must remind people that all these birds are endangered (and strongly protected by law) species. A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says'I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it's today.' The bartender says 'Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.' As the woman finishes her drink the woman to her right says 'I would like to buy you a drink, too.' The old woman says 'Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.' 'Coming up' says the bartender As she finishes that drink, The man to her left says 'I would like to buy you one, too.' The old woman says 'Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.' 'Coming right up' the bartender says. As he gives her the drink,he says 'Ma'am, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?' The old woman replies 'Sonny, when you're my age, You've learned how to hold your liquor... Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.'

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

In my previous articles I’ve shown you a few birds that need a close examination to positively identify them, many are Spanish specialities and quite rare back home in the UK, but here’s another nice and easy bird for you to look out for. There are usually a few pairs on the main pool in the Clot, and they are also well-known in Britain. There are more in Spain during the winter months as Northern birds very wisely come south for some sun, but they are present throughout the year as well.

This is the Common Pochard (Porrόn europeo in Spanish) which is a very widespread duck indeed, and can be found throughout Europe and into North and Central Asia as far east as China. It is what is known as a dabbling duck, slightly smaller than the well-known Mallard and with similar feeding habits, which involve a lot of underwater head action searching for seeds, vegetable matter and small animals such as crustaceans and fish. Sometimes a longer diving expedition will take place too. My pictures show the male in all his finery, and the female – as is usual with most duck species – a rather insignificant brown bird which helps keep it camouflaged during the risky nesting period. Several pairs may breed on the Clot, the duckling photo was taken at the Charco pool two years ago when at least two families were raised. Pochards can cause excessive stress among experienced birdwatchers due to their habit of occasionally interbreeding with other duck species such as Tufted Duck and even Mallards, giving rise to peculiar-looking offspring which no-one can positively identify. You can never be sure when seeing a strange duck if it is a rare transatlantic vagrant or the result of some interspecies hanky-panky. It is not an endangered species given the wide distribution of the world population which is about 2.5 million birds, but like just about every other duck species it is frequently hunted and there is also the danger of lead poisoning to these birds from discarded shotgun pellets. The name of this bird sometimes leads to disagreements on the exact pronunciation - I once had the unnerving experience of sitting in a bird hide next to a very large lady birdwatcher in twinset and pearls who suddenly announced (in an extremely posh voice) “oh, look, a Poe-shar!” She was quite adamant that was how it was pronounced, and I wasn’t about to argue, but normally it is pronounced “Potch-ard” by most birders. Many of my photos can be seen at http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ if you’d like to see more! See you next month.
