Hello everyone
Our front cover shows the beaches here during late June, with the very high temperatures arriving for the summer.
Congratulations to O’Duills on their 10 year anniversary. They are the only business at the carabasi bars who are still there from the opening of the complex 10 years ago.
For people coming out this summer keep a watch on the Tourist info page in the magazine, letting you know where different fiesta´s are happening, always a spectical to see somewhere. As you will see in the magazine our own Tourist office is now open for the summer, we are sure they will have plenty of information of things to do around the area.
We had a very enjoyable evening in the Casa de Cultura in Santa Pola last month where GASP theatre Group put on 4 short plays, (pics in the magazine), well worth going to. Watch out for notices of their next production later this year.
Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was at the Veinte Seis advert

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!!
Has the calor/mains gas man phoned you yet and made an appointment to check your appliance and give you a 5 year certificate, as well as walking off with an extortunate sum of cash. LORETO SAYS, never let anybody into your house. You can ask them for relevent paperwork and take it to Loreto at the Council Office, who can verify it for you. DO NOT GET CAUGHT. The paperwork given to a GA resident is now being looked over by the police. As far as Loreto is aware, you do not need this licence, they just say you have to have it. If Loreto gets the answer from the police, before we go to print, we will update this notice. If not, watch next months news. It does seem that it may not be illegal, but there are concerns about the prices charged --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Also, has someone left a note on your gate, asking you to leave clothes out, to go to charity. These clothes will probably end up for sale on the local markets. If you would like to donate, clothes, money, or indeed anything else, the Red Cross would be very pleased if you pass it on to them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------an email to us Dear Barry, As an avid reader of your magazine since the seven years we have lived in Gran Alacant I have always found it very informative. You tell us that every month you have talks with our local councillor. So it beggars belief that there is not one word of the crushing and quarying that has taken place on an industrial scale in your June issue magazine in the gorge beside the construction on cardiac hill. We as local residents closest to this works are showered in lime stone dust every day and have been for the last two months. Our many meetings at Santa Pola Town Hall seem to fall on deaf ears our local councillor has given us residents very little help. But I suppose if it was a photo shoot for the opening of a roundabout costing thousands of euros which could be spent elsewhere. No problem, tomorrow we have another meeting at Santa Pola council at eleven am. We have received a lot of help and advice from the Green Party on this serious issue. It is a shame others do not feel the need to take up our cause. A very unhappy former reader.
Unfortunately we were not at any time asked to get involved in this issue. The first we saw of it was in a local newspaper. We would obviously have helped if asked. Sorry you will now be a former reader. At our meeting with Loreto she told us of recent get togethers with her, the Town Hall, the company involved and members from the effected local community. The area will be damped down and compacted to stop the soil blowing in the wind and those effected have been given Loretos phone number so they can ring her if there is still a problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

an email to us Hi Barry and Sandra, I hope you are well. My name is Karen and I have a home in Gran Alacant which I aim to be living in full time next year!! In order to do this I have set up Netball Spain. Working alongside Gema the sports development officer at the sports facility at the top of Gran Alacant, Netball Spain will bring netball players from the UK and Ireland to play netball tournaments in Gran Alacant. The aim is to promote netball as a sport for women in the local area, both ex pats and Spanish and also to introduce into the schools for young girls. Increasing female participation sport, particularly netball, is a passion of mine. Our first event is running from 8th - 13th August with many of the players arriving on the 6th. Everyone is staying in Gran Alacant and we aim to support the local businesses by having our meals and nights out the in Gran Alacant area. We are planning to have around 10 events in 2014. What we would like to do is to make local people aware this is happening and as the first place we look for information is your magazine we thought where better to go than the Gran Alacant Advertiser!! We want local people to come along and take part in the warm up sessions and fun team building games and to watch or indeed take part in the netball.
Please have a look at our website www.netballspain.co.uk and our Facebook page netball Spain for more information. In 2014 there will be the option for local people to attend a weekly / twice weekly (depending on interest) netball fitness and coaching sessions? Anyone who is interested could contact me at: netballspain@hotmail.co.uk
We are waiting for her to confirm if we are due to use the outside or indoor court and if the netball posts have arrived. We also need to check about seating for anyone that wants to come along.
Our idea is that on the Saturday our players will do some warm ups, netball skills etc, then play a match. When they have a rest, the local people who come long could have a go at a few skills etc, then our players play again. On the Sunday we are due to have a team from Queseada come up, this would be a good match that the local people could watch.
This event is planned to be the first of many, bigger events and as I said before it will hopefully lead to people from Gran Alacant wanting to get involved in netball and for me to hold coaching sessions each week and set up a club in the area!!
Karen -------------------------------------------------Well, at last, the gates to the new market have at last been erected. (see pictures). Just the paving and lighting to complete the whole operation. Talking of markets, the one in Santa Pola will now feature stalls for fruit and veg on the Monday market as well as on a Saturday. --------------------------------------------------
5
Talking of gates, one of the biggest community of houses on Gran Alacant, Altomar 2, has decided to gate the whole complex. This has already had an effect on some of the businesses situated inside the newly gated areas. To visit anyone inside this area, or to get emergency services inside, keys will have to be found to get into the urbanisation. ---------------------------------------------------Particuarly for holiday makers the Tourist Information office will be open during the summer months on Gran Alacant. It is situated up the hill just before you come to the council offices/health centre. ---------------------------------------------------Blue Flags The Councillor for Tourism, Loreto Serrano, has attended the ceremony in Benissa to receive the Blue Flags obtained by the municipalities of Valencia, and she received from the president Alberto Fabra the four blue flags obtained by Levante-Calas beaches of Santiago Bernabeu, Havana, Calas del Este and Tamarit, plus those received by the Club Nautico Santa Pola and Marine Research Centre (CIMAR). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------For awhile now, it was always hoped that Elche council would erect lights along the road from GA to Arenales.
They now have...but what an awful eyesore. Telegraph poles with wires strung between them making an absolute mess of the skyline. Lets hope these are not the final installations. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------talk again next month, Sandra and Barry

Sandra y Barry

The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight

The waitress, thinking this was quite risquĂŠ behaviour that might offend other diners, went over to the table and tactfully, began by saying to the woman , "Pardon me, madam, but I think your husband just slid under the table." The woman calmly looked up at her and said, "No, he didn't. He actually just walked in the door."

"The Ferrari F1 team fired their entire pit crew yesterday." This announcement followed Ferrari's decision to take advantage of the British government's 'Work for your Dole' scheme and employ some Liverpudlian youngsters. The decision to hire them was brought about by a recent documentary on how unemployed youths from Toxteth were able to remove a set of wheels in less than 6 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Ferrari's existing crew could only do it in 8 seconds with millions of pounds worth of high tech equipment.
It was thought to be an excellent, bold move by the Ferrari management team as most races are won and lost in the pits, giving Ferrari an advantage over every other team.
However, Ferrari got more than they bargained for! At the crew's first practice session, not only was the scouse pit crew able to change all four wheels in under 6 seconds but, within 12 seconds, they had re-sprayed, re-badged and sold the car to the Mc Claren team for 8 cases of Stella, a bag of weed and some photos of Lewis Hamilton's bird in the shower.

The mother-in-law arrives home from the shops to find her son-in-law boiling angry and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened ?" she asks anxiously. "What happened!! I'll tell you what happened. I sent an email to my wife telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home... and guess what I found ? Yes, your daughter, my Jean, with a naked guy in our marital bed! This is unforgiveable, the end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!" "Calm down, calm down!" says his mother-in-law. "There is something very odd going on here. Jean would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I'll go speak to her immediately and find out what happened." Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. " I told you there must be a simple explanation .....she didn't receive your E-mail!"

A Day on Tabarca One of the things quite often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola via google, rang them up and booked on a Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine reserve. Damon the owner lives in Gran Alacant and was happy to pick us up on route to the Dive Centre 10 minutes away in Santa Pola. We were teamed up with a mixed group of English and Dutch families and after putting on our wetsuits (mostly back to front) fins and masks (scuba divers frown on them being called flippers and goggles apparently) and headed off to the island on the taxi speedboat. After arriving on Tabarca, Jake our ‘divemaster’ gave us a quick brief on how to put the gear on correctly, safety procedures and marine life we were likely to see. The first site we visited was called the black skull a small rock island about 100 meters from shore. Initially the water is only 1 to 2 meters deep which was great for the kids to gain confidence and the wetsuits actually helped them float. As soon as your mask breaks the surface you can see literally thousands of fish much to the kids and big kids delight. Around the back of the black skull the water is a little bit deeper and the more adventurous amongst us were ‘duck diving’ to the octopus holes Jake expertly spotted. After a quick break we headed to another site and went in the limestone caves, I was a little apprehensive about this at first but the caves turned out to be breath taking and not at all claustrophobic. Again the marine life was spectacular and the water as clear as a swimming pool. We headed back on the boat about 2pm with a boat load of smiley, tired kids and adults alike. It was a great day rounded of nicely with a cold drink in Marina Miramar.

The cost for Rebosy ranges from 75 to 160 euro and in most cases it is a once in a lifetime treatment.
We do all kinds of pain treatments and prescriptions. Normal consultation from 30 euro.
The treatment is painless and lasts for one to two hours and you will be asked your opinion after the treatment. It is successful in 9 out of 10 cases and your physical problems may disappear immediately after being treated!
During the treatment you will simply lie on a couch and relax while the doctor carries out the treatment. The treatment consists of ReBoSy by AA (Restoring Body Symmetry by Advanced Acupuncture) using very fine needles and infrared light, among other things.
Using a level measure for ReBoSy (Restoring Body Symmetry) you can see the difference - before and after treatment.
A small deviation in the level of your pelvis - which you may never have noticed - could give you back or neck problems or even headaches. Because of this you may end up as a patient who has to endure many different medical treatments.
Without knowing it, many of us suffer from instability in the Pelvis which can lead to unequal leg length resulting in a small deviation (Scoliosis) in the column.
New treatment - unknown in U.K. - for lower back pain, headache, migraine, muscular tension, muscular pain(including Lumbar pain) and many more.

RABIES IS BACK
As everybody should know now, a case of canine rabies has been confirmed in Spain. It has been the first case since 1978. The infected dog was at Toledo (near Madrid), and, before being shot dead by a policeman, attacked 3 children (one of them aged two), and one adult (baby’s father). Fortunately, all of them are recovering successfully at the hospital. The dog, which used to live in Catalonia (where rabies injection is not mandatory), has spent 3 months in Morocco, where rabies is an endemic disease, and contacted the virus there, as the post-mortem tests confirmed: the virus was a North-African type, and had nothing to do with Spain. How did this happen? Simply because the owner broke the law on purpose: he tried to go back to Spain from Morocco with the dog without any kind of travel certificate. I would like to remind everybody that, despite rabies antibodies titration is no longer necessary for taking a dog (or cat, or ferret) from an EU country to England, Ireland, Sweden or Norway, it is still required for taking a dog, cat or ferret to the European Union from most non-EU countries (including all African countries and, of course, Morocco). It works like the following: for leaving Spain (no matter where you go), a valid rabies injection done at least 21 days before you go, plus rabies and microchip are required. But, if apart from leaving Spain, you are going to visit a “third world country”, AND YOU WANT TO TAKE THE ANIMAL BACK TO THE EUROPEAN UNION AFTER VISITING THAT THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, there is an additional requirement: rabies antibodies serology, exactly the same test the Pet Travel Scheme asked for before 2011. The only difference is the quarantine lasts for 3 months instead of 6. That means the animal is ready to re-entry the European Union from third countries 3 months after the sampling date. The blood sample has to be taken at least 1 month after the last rabies injection, in order to give the animal inmmunity enough time to produce antibodies. We recognize we used to think that all those requirements were excessive, but the incident with the dog in Toledo proved us they are logical, sensible and necessary. Let’s see the errors that were made in this particular case: -The dog had a rabies injection, a microchip and a European passport, BUT they didn’t wait the mandatory 21 days after the injection for travelling abroad, so the vaccine DIDN’T have enough time to develop a valid anti-rabies immunity. In those “Comunidades Autónomas” (such as ours) where an ANNUAL rabies injection is mandatory, what we are doing is to ensure a good antibodies titre wich will protect the dog against the disease, even if it’s bitten. So, despite rabies can be done in some areas and countries every 2 or 3 years, the only way to ensure a good immunity is doing it yearly, which doesn’t endanger the animal’s health nor the owner’s economy, since it’s a really cheap vaccine. What will happen if rabies injection is not repeated yearly? Antibodies titre will be below 0.5 UI/ml which is the minimum recommended by WHO. 0.5 UI or more indicate the animal has a valid protection against rabies, WHO says. So, in case the animal has been injected against rabies but its rabies antibodies titre is less than 0.5 UI/ml and has contacted a suspicious or confirmed case of rabies, WHO recommends euthanasia. That’s what authorities did to one of the dogs that contacted the infected one. The other exposed dogs showed an acceptable rabies antibodies titre, so they didn’t had to be destroyed. So, this dog should never have left Spain before the 21 days from the vaccination date. -The owner, after several unsuccessful attempts, managed to cross the border between Spain and Morocco without having the mandatory rabies blood test titration. The owner and his dogs spent about 3 months in Morocco, which is enough time to do a legal rabies antibodies titration. Even if you are in Morocco, you can send the dog’s blood to an European official, EU-certified lab, but it’s cheaper and more exciting to try to break the law… Another lesson we can learn about this case is controls work. Immediately after the dog was shot, they scanned its microchip and the owner was immediately located (and arrested by the police), and all the animals that contacted the infected dog from the moment of its re-entry in Spain were taken under control. At the moment there is a restricted area around Toledo, and it’s highly recommended to inject against rabies every dog, cat and ferret. Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán col 793. English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747.
P. S. Still no official confirmation from the Toxicology lab about last month poisoning. But we still have to be careful, because we have seen some new cases these last days.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
It's high summer, and the hot days give you little choice – either bake in the sun all day for that all-important tan, or head off inland for some respite from the heat. If you're on the beach your most likely bird sightings (no, not that sort, chaps!) will be the ever-present Yellow-legged Gulls or the ubiquitous House Sparrow, and to be honest it's hard to drum up much enthusiasm for those birds. But if you venture inland, you might just catch sight of one of Spain's most stunning and exotic-looking summer visitors – the oddly-named Roller, known to Spaniards as the Carraca. It is rarely seen in the Clot, but is regular around the Elche countryside where it often nests in old woodpecker holes in palm trees. It tends to favour lowland areas with scattered trees, either cultivated or scrub areas. It is in our area of Spain from April through to late September.
Just look at my photo – how could you possibly miss seing a bird that brightly coloured? It's a chunky bird the size of a Jackdaw (a small crow for those who don't know it) and is distantly related to the crow family. When it flies, you will see that it has a black trailing edge to it's wings, contrasting sharply with the different shades of blue on the forewings. Rollers are not hard to see when perched either, the tend to sit out in the open on a wire or high tree to survey the ground around them for its favourite food of large insects, reptiles, rodents and frogs which form its main diet. The odd English name of Roller comes from its activities during the spring, when the bird has an impressive display flight consisting of twists, turns and loops, while calling with a loud series of crow-like calls. One of the strangest things about Rollers is that their nestlings will vomit if they are disturbed, and this causes the parent birds to stay away from the nest – it is thought that this is a survival mechanism to protect the adults who may be able to breed again, whereas the nestlings may die from any predator which has caused the disturbance. Unfortunately the Roller population is in a severe decline, over 30% of the global population has been lost during the last 15 years. Some of this is attributable to persecution by shooters when it is on migration; other causes include changes in farming methods and loss of habitat. It is extremely rare in the UK, where a British sighting of this unmistakeable bird will bring the twitchers out in a frenzy. .
See you next month.
