Hello Everyone,
page number
Anyone living on, or visiting Gran Alacant cannot help but notice all of the work going on at the moment. All the new paving will make the walking a great deal more pleasant, especially if you are pulling shopping trolleys or pushing prams/pushchairs. The new childrens area outside the Municipal office, has more than doubled in size and has lots of new play equipment, and along with the refreshments kiosk in among the pine tree, makes for a nice area to while away the time. After watching tv programmes telling all of the horror stories of living in Spain, we must consider ourselves very fortunate to live in such a nice area. Have a good month enjoy the sunshine Barry and Sandra

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.
The day before we had our meeting with Loreto, Valencian Officials announced that the new tram system that will eventually run all along the coast to Murcia will have a stop on Gran Alacant, The tram will link Alicante to the Airport then El Altet, Gran Alacant (near the Repsol garage) on to Santa Pola , it will then have stops all the way down to Murcia. The tram will be very friendly towards the environment and the line will be flanked with trees, and at some points, with a cycle track. Also announced at the same time, was that Gran Alacant is to have a new, purpose built medical centre, which will cater for our needs with many specialised units. It will be built on the land just before Monte Faro and the Santa Pola Life Resort. The plans for this centre are now to be drawn up. All of the tenders for the Park are in, and the construction company has been chosen. Work is hoped to start around the end of July. Around the same date, the work on the landscaping of the edge of the Clot will start. Again at this busy time, we will also see the start of the closing in and modification of the Sports Hall. In the same area work will soon start on the new custom built Gran Alacant

market site. Below is the initial plan, showing the layout for the stalls, car
parking and landscaping. The area is to be designed as to be available to accommodate other functions in the same area. Those that live here will see the massive lengths of new paving now being constructed, both eminating from the GA Centre roundabout. One length going from here down to the new school and the other length stretching all the way to the post office. The previous kerbing laid many years ago, did not allow for paving, so new kurb stones have had to be laid to gain the correct height for the new paving. The area we mentioned last month, which is to have patanca and a childrens play area (halfway between the GA Centre roundabout and the new school) was chosen by the Council as it is an area that got alot of complaints about untidiness. As this is a sandy dusty area, which
TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER phone: 966 699 167
always sees sand blown about, the car park area will be surfaced in such a way as to eliviate this problem. You will be able to access the area from the new pavement on the side of the road, as well as two other entrances. Trees will be replanted from the area where some of the pavements are being laid. Also new trees and lighting will be added to make it a very nice area. We do have an article elsewhere in this issue about the area of Puerto Marino
where there are untidy areas.. One area which Masa had for their sales offices is to be cleaned up an made to look alot better. WE have been asked why the swimming pool in Santa Pola is still not available to us all. 3 companies were awarded the initial contract but recently one of them went into insolvency. This has obviously caused problems in finding a new company, however, the other 2 have come together and agreed to take on the extra work, so, we are now back on track and hope to have it completed by the end of this summertime. Two road areas where we were asked to talk about speed bumps have come to fruition. The first has already had two slow down bumps placed and the other, at a junction coming out onto a main road
where cars are travelling quickly, making the junction dangerous is now being considered. Residents in the area high above the beach road juction where the new pumping and sewage area is, have been complaining of nastly smells in the area. We have been down there, and indeed, at times it is very unpleasant. We have spoken to Loreto. and she will speak to the department concerned. A temporary church is now being built in a residential block near to the new school. Masa have always promised to one day build a church, but at the moment money is a problem.so...they have agreed to kit out a commercial building to satisfy the needs of the church goers until money allows them to built a brand new church..one day. The Gran Alacant fiestas supplied free from the Towh Hall will take place on July 24-25-26. All events will be held outside the municiple centre. Three days of childrens games, music from the new Reckless now renamed Dark Night, Spanish dancing and refreshment areas. These events are due in future to be staged at the site of the new market. BEGINS GASP!, Gran Alacant's new amateur drama group, have announced their first production - and they're aiming to start with a bang! The play, well-loved British author Alan Bennett's hilarious comedy "Habeas Corpus", is set in permissive-society Brighton in the 1970s, and as one of the characters remarks, "It´s sex, sex, sex everywhere these days!" Described by GASP!'s director Roger
Baptising an Irishman (sent to us by an Irish friend)
An Irishman, is stumbling through the woods, totally drunk, when he comes upon a preacher baptising people in the river. He proceeds to walk into the water and subsequently bumps into the preacher. The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon he asks the drunk, 'Are you ready to find Jesus?' The drunk shouts, 'Yes, oi am.' So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water.

Keevil as "a saucy seaside postcard come to life", the piece features all the classic figures of traditional British Carry-On comedy - large ladies, frustrated spinsters, and malpracticing doctors, as well as a lustful vicar and a pretty young girl with a secret! Rehearsals are well under way, and after a summer break - "This play's hot enough, without the added excitement of tropical temperatures," quipped Roger - tickets will be going on sale in September in advance of the performances at Santa Pola's Casa de Cultura Theatre in Calle Elche on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November 2009. Watch this space for more details about where to get your tickets.
GASP! will be donating profits from the play to Costa Blanca charities, but with a difference. "We know that it's traditional for many entertainment groups to make donations to all sorts of local British causes," said Roger, "and we'll be doing exactly the same. But, to show our appreciation for all the support we've received from the Santa Pola authorities, we also want to reciprocate that support by giving to a local Spanish-based organisation, and we'd like that to be a suitable Santa Pola-based children's group." For more information, or to find out how you can join GASP!, email gasp.theatre@gmail.com or call 966 695 043. ENDS
He pulls him up and asks the drunk, 'Brother have you found Jesus?' The drunk replies, 'No, oi haven't found Jesus.' The preacher shocked at the answer, dunks him into the water again for a little longer. He again pulls him out of the water and asks again, 'Have you found Jesus me brother?' The drunk again answers, 'No, oi I haven't found Jesus.' By this time the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the drunk in the water again --but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds and when he begins kicking his arms and legs he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the drunk, 'For the love of God have you found Jesus?' The drunk wipes his eyes and catches his breath and says to the preacher, 'Are you sure dis is where he fell in?'

Why no green land on
Puerto Marino
(the area behing the GA Centre as you come into Gran Alacant, on your right) Have you noticed that many areas on Gran Alacant have an area of green land, somewhere near, for the kids to play. For over 4 years now, residents here on Puerto Marino, have been trying to buy some land from the developers to use for their enjoyment. There are 3 areas of land, all owned by the GA Centre. 1. The area which housed the temporary school classrooms. This lies idle and un-used 2. The area next to the car wash, not a pretty sight. Cluttered up with junk. 3. Probably the first piece of land that visitors to our urbanisation, see as they enter, is the piece of land on the right, that was the Masa offices. What an eyesore as you come onto Gran Alacant. After many inaffective meetings over a long period of time, these residents have almost given up their fight. The Town Hall do not own any of this land, so are fairly powerless to do anything about it.

If they put a man on the moon - they should be able to put them all up there.
While shopping for holiday clothes, my husband and I passed a display of swimming costumes.
It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so I sought my husband's advice.
'What do you think?' I asked. 'Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?' 'Better get a bikini,' he replied. 'You'd never get it all in one.' He's still in intensive care.

We have been asked to highlight the
Carabasi Garden areas
that are coming under a bit of abuse. As you can see from the top picture, compared to the one at the bottom of the page, great strides have been made to improve this area. As we mentioned in an earlier issue, the businesses had all got together and paid to landscape the area. A couple of the bars now pay for the upkeep of the area, so it is a bit dis-heartening for them to see it abused.
Unfortunately youngsters have been taking the caps off the watering system, uncovering all of the pipework and interfering with the water system. It is so nice to see people trying to improve Gran Alacant and making everywhere look nice and so it is a bit soul destroying to see areas vandalised.

Hi everyone, this month and next I am going to talk about Massage. Swedish Massage this is the type of massage that I am qualified in. Mmmmmm, pure, heavenly and simply divine, just the thought of a massage makes you feel relaxed. So what is Massage? Massage is the use of hands, feet or mechanical means to manipulate the soft tissue of the body, in particular the muscles. Massage is used for relaxation, rehabilitation and stimulation of the whole body. It enhances suppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress. So where does it come from? Massage is not a technique derived from one culture but from many. People the world over use touch as a form of communication and comfort. Animals use touch in a similar way, e.g. grooming their young, licking wounds and nuzzling each other to show affection. The use of massage has been recorded in China from 3000BC. In India massage has always’ been used as part traditional Ayurvedic Medicine. At Roman baths, business life for all members of society, massage was central to the whole ritual. For the ancient Greeks massage formed part of everyday exercise and
fitness. Modern massage is based on techniques used by Per Henrik Ling (17761839) a physiologist and fencing master, he was from Sweden and massage is still referred to as Swedish Massage because of his influence. At the end of the nineteenth century massage was battling for respectability. The name was often used in relation to prostitution and therefore the therapy was not taken seriously. In order to combat this eight woman founded The Society of Trained Masseuses in 1884. Massage now has become a reputable and recognized therapy thanks to an increased awareness and interest in complementary therapies. What Massage does? Massage is beneficial to all of the bodies systems. It is a natural and effective way to treat psychological problems (relating to the mind) such as stress, by enabling the body to relax, thereby reducing tension it relaxes the mind, thereby reducing anxiety and its effects and gives a “lift” to our emotions and increases positive feelings, enhancing self esteem. Massage will increase you energy by invigorating all body systems and reducing fatigue. Massage is also effective in treating the Physiological (relating to the physical structure of the body) by improving skin tone and colour by removing dead skin cells and improving circulation. DRIVERS LICENCES IN SPAIN DRIVERS LICENCES Recently a new law by the was passed by the Spanish Government and will come into force in the near future. This concerns all holders of a non-spanish drivers licence. This law was passed to prevent discrimination that can work in the favour of foreigners resident in Spain and who hold a drivers licence issued in another member state of the European Union. If an offence is committed by the driver

of a vehicle, they will be obliged to transfer their foreign drivers licence for a one issued by the Spanish Traffic department. Once the drivers licence is issued it will automatically carry the number of points lost according to the offence committed. If an offence is carried out by a driver who is not resident in Spain and has a foreign drivers licence, the Spanish authorities will contact the relevant authorities in the country where the drivers licence was issued. Therefore if you are resident in Spain it would be advisable to exchange your non-Spanish drivers licence for a licence issued by the Spanish authorities. Another change was the requirement of a medical certificate for the Spanish traffic department. When an application is made for a Spanish drivers licence in exchange for a foreign

drivers licence, it is no longer obligatory to undergo a medical examination. You still require a medical certificate when you renew a Spanish drivers licence. As the laws in Spain change so frequently (sometimes on an hourly basis!) I'm sure you can understand the frustration we sometimes experience when we approach Trafico with documents that were acceptable the day before, only to be told that there is an ammendment to the previous requirements and there are now other documents required!!! When the requirements change, there is no information released previously so you can be prepared for the changes. If there are any more changes made regarding Driving in Spain we will let the readers of the Gran Alacant Advertiser know as soon as possible.

Luna is a beautiful small Chihuahua cross the was found in the campo near Catral. She was rescued by a local resident and then she contacted us. Luna is approx 1 year old, a little timid when she first meets you but very loving once she gets to know you. She is house trained and likes to play, she is a little cutie!
Max is a 16 month old Boxer. He is a very playful, loving boy. He is good with other dogs, housetrained, vaccinated and micro-chipped. He sleeps outside in his kennel at night but still likes to get cuddles every now and then.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge There are some species of birds, particularly among the Warbler and Lark families, which can reduce even the most experienced birdwatcher to a gibbering wreck when he is called upon to actually identify what it is. Sometimes the final diagnosis can depend on the length of just one particular feather in the wing, for example, and the only way to do that is to actually trap the little blighter in question and bring out the tape-measure. But as you wander around the Clot, there is no need to arm yourself with a mist-net and a ruler, as there are plenty of birds which can be identified from some distance away by even the novice. And here’s one of the easiest ones – the Black-winged Stilt, known as Cigueñuela común in Spanish (literally – “Common Little Stork”). It can be seen anywhere there is water, or even just a damp patch, at all times of the year although there are always fewer around in the winter, when the more sensible ones fly south to the warmth of Africa. Unlike your Indeterminate Warbler or Problematic Lark, you don’t have to worry too much about the finer points of the bird’s plumage, the Black-winged Stilt (or just Stilt as you are allowed to call it because there’s only the one species of this bird in Europe) has the unmistakeable basic blueprint of ultra-long red legs, black wings and a white body, but the head and neck can be all white to partly black and all stations in between. When they take to flight, those long legs trail behind them making them look like mini-flamingoes, and anyone who doesn’t know what a Flamingo looks like has obviously never driven along the N332 through the Santa Pola Salinas, or has done so with their eyes shut – not recommended on any Spanish road. Although my picture would seem to show a quite dainty bird, they tend to congregate in ASBO style groups, showing off, calling and bickering with each other in order to impress the ladies, somewhat like a rowdy queue outside a nightclub. Also they will give any potential predator short shrift; being mobbed by an irate bunch of Stilts with those vicious needle sharp beaks is probably not on a predator’s list of fun things to do. These birds are rare but not unknown in the UK, and some of them have even bred there. The sad thing is that when they do, for some peculiar reason the male is always called “Sammy the Stilt” in the ensuing publicity. Unless you are under seven years of age, you most definitely ought not to do this when you see one. See you next month.

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.
The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'. The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'
The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

Please pass on my heartfelt thanks to Murphy of Sol Builders and his pals for the work they carried out on my friend Barbara's house.
As you know Barbara was the lucky winner of the competition run by Sol Builders to help an O.A.P. in Gran Alacant. Those who know Barbara know what a bad time she has had over the past two years and what a sweet lady she is.
Murphy decorated her house and he and his pals carried out some household repairs efficiently and to a very high standard and without any charge whatsoever, which will quieten some sceptics who say you get nothing for free.
Sol Builders have restored Barbara's faith in humanity and given her a new lease of life Well done Murphy your kind gesture was outstanding keep up the good work. My sincere thanks once again. Norma.
Hi Barry and Sandra,
Thank you for the best and always most informative mag in the area!
We are however more dismayed with each passing year as always the hard work and efforts made within G.A. are always channelled "up the Hill" and seldom in the area of Puerto Marino, which as you may recall in 2001/2 was promised as being the "Flagship entrance of Gran Alacant". During my hapless years serving on the Committee and as President of Puerto Marino we were constantly in pursuit of our missing Green Space and in tidying up the area. Several meetings on this subject were held at Santa Pola Ayuntamiento and were well represented by Council Officials and local elected Members. The awareness that usable "green space" area was urgently needed as well as being a legal right to residents on an urbanisation of this size was freely acknowledged.
Why, five years later is the fine G.A.Commercial Complex still surrounded by the three only remaining open spaces being fenced in and neglected? The impression given on entering by road or even walking around the Urbanisation is one of shabby abandonment.
We are not talking of major funding here-more a request that some common sense and agreement be applied between the governing bodies at the Ayuntamiento and the Owners! Keep up your excellent work. Geoff and Marian Roberts.(C/Finlandia 6. Puerto Marino/Gran Alacant.)

KIDS, the little darlings A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with
her five and six year olds.
After explaining the commandment to 'honour' thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?' Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, 'Thou shall not kill.' One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?' Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.' The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?' The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture. 'Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out, 'And there's the teacher, she's dead.'

Dave The Computerman.
Welcome to the computer column presented by Dave the Computerman.
Windows 7 to launch October The new operating system from Microsoft, simply called 7 will be on sale from retailers from October 22 this year, just in time for the Christmas spendfest. It is an improvement on Windows Vista (let’s be honest…the abacus is an improvement on that), but is built upon the Vista system. I have tried it and it is very good, but I will not be changing my XP computers until they die.
Outlook Express and Hotmail synchronization ending If you're still using Outlook Express for checking your Windows Live Hotmail, listen up. Microsoft will be cutting off your access in three months. On September 1, 2009, the support for Distributed Authoring and Versioning, the protocol that Outlook Express and a handful of older clients currently use to access Hotmail, will be discontinued. Microsoft originally planned to cut off access for Outlook Express users on June 30, 2008. However Outlook Express users got a stay of execution after they complained that it was too soon. Microsoft's management agreed and gave users another year to make the migration. Microsoft has stated that these changes are necessary to support the larger and larger mailbox sizes that Hotmail supports. The say that that due to the Outlook Express programme’s age, it can no longer keep up with the demands placed on it.

Outlook Express was last included with Windows XP. Windows Vista includes Windows Mail, but it does not feature the direct Hotmail connection features that were present in Outlook Express. Windows Vista users who wish to connect to their Hotmail accounts can use Windows Live Mail. Users of Outlook Express who wish to continue using the client can reconfigure the client to connect using POP3, which was added to Hotmail in March 2009. As part of Microsoft's new distribution strategy, Windows 7 does not include any mail client by default, but users can optionally install Windows Live Mail. This change will have no affect on users of Microsoft Outlook 2003/2007 using the Office Outlook Connector since it also uses Microsoft's new protocol. However if you're using a previous version of Outlook, you'll need to or reconfigure your client to connect using POP3. Users who check their email using only the web browser based version of Hotmail, will not have to make any changes to their account.

The competition itself was fierce, with only one bowler, Pauline Merry, winning all four matches played, and a further three players (Scribe included) winning three out of four matches. Of those four players, John Caiger had the best shot difference, and was awarded second place. The winner’s trophy was presented to Pauline by Club Captain John Chapman, and our owner Don Antonio Martinez, who is shown in the photograph wearing his normal day job uniform. A great day enjoyed by all, and congratulations to Pauline for an excellent win.

“NEW” DISEASES AND CLIMATE CHANGE CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTH
Sometimes we hear some of these diseases are “new” or “mutated”, but what really happens is weather conditions have changed, so semi-tropical diseases which were very rare some years ago are becoming more and more common because their vectors (fleas, ticks and mosquitoes) are more and more common because the new weather conditions are better and better for them. Another “not new but spread-
ing parasitic disease” which is becoming quite important these last months would be cardiopulmonary infestation by the worm called Angiostrongylus vasorum, or “French heartworm”. As the name indicates, is a very similar disease to classical mosquito transmitted heartworm, but the transmission in this case is via snails, or by drinking contaminated water. Anyway, there is nothing to worry about if your dog is having heartworm prevention, because it covers both worms, so, another danger to be taken into account, and a very good reason to continue

On a local level, residents of, and visitors to, the Gran Alacant area are already benefiting greatly from a newly founded local site - www.granalacantforum.es here local and national information is posted by local people for local people. Its motto is 'Rhetoric with Respect'. As you would expect, you and your opinions will be treated with respect. No one need be hesitant in writing something for members to read. heartworm prevention even when the dog is living at the UK, because there is no northern limit for snails habitat, opposite as mosquitoes one. Which is the best antiparasitic treatment? It depends on the animal and his life conditions: if he lives indoors or outdoors, if he walks on places with lots of plants and bushes, if there are carpets and central heating at home, if he is shampooed very often, etc. According to all these variables, the Vet will decide in every case which is the best treatment(s) in every case. Apart from climate change, another factor which is encouraging the spreading of vectorial diseases is the mobility of lots and lots of different species of pets, some of them without any kind of control. In case of these “exotic” pets the diseases the may transmit are more serious, so more strict controls at the borders would be very desirable in order to stop illegal
importations and make quarantines and other legal requirements for travelling with animals be respected, because when protecting them, we are also protecting ourselves. About the suddenly popular (but not new!!) Swine flu, cannot be transmitted to dogs or cats. Cat flu or kennel cough cannot be transmitted to people, but it’s true that some respiratory diseases in birds and rabbits may affect people, but they are not newer or more serious than traditional human flu.

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.
My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'
'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'
And then the fight started...

Lessons of the Month

There are many expressions that use the verb 'tener' (often in English these use the verb 'to be'). It is a nice trick to use them, because once you have learnt to conjugate 'tener', all you have to do is add the appropriate word, and you have another verb! For example, 'tener suerte' is 'to be lucky', so to say 'I am lucky', you simply conjugate 'tener' in the first person singular present, 'tengo', and then add 'suerte', 'tengo suerte'. The great thing is that you can put 'tener' into whatever tense you want, and then add 'suerte'. So, 'has tenido suerte' would be 'you have been lucky', and 'tendrás suerte' would be 'you will be lucky'. Other expressions are: Tener razón - to be right Tener X años - to be X years old Tener calor - to be hot Tener frío - to be cold Tener hambre - to be hungry Tener sed - to be thirsty Tener cara - to be cheeky Tener cuidado - to be careful Tener éxito - to be successful Tener miedo - to be scared Tener prisa - to be in a hurry Jan
