We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! For our meeting at the Town Hall, we were met by a very upset Loreto. She had just finished meeting a Spanish lady, struggling to survive financially. A discussion followed about the number of people in this awful situation through no fault of their own. Town Halls in Spain, do help where they can, but of course they also have budget problems. So many of us could afford to help. Any food parcels, clothes or childrens toys, can be taken to the library on Gran Alacant, or to the local Red Cross, where they are collected to distribute in the area. In fact the library do not now fine for the late return of books, but ask for a fine in the way of food or toys. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet another scam, emailed to us below
hi barry and sandra, thought this may help your readers. friday 28th of september I was taken in by three women who claimed that I had booked them to clean my casa pushed past me and entered my house. They then used my mop and bucket showing me what they thought I had not understood. This was a scam. After I repeatedly said in broken spanish that they had the wrong house the older women started saying pee pee and helped herself to the use of my toilet. They kissed and hugged me saying wrong casa, sorry sorry sorry, then, needless to say departed with my purse containing lots of important things, bank cards, telephone numbers and copy of passport, mail box keys, money ect ect ect. Two local police and four gardia were in my house within seven and a half minutes. May I also say it was not a drugs raid or a terrorist attack as supposed by local people. I would like to thank all my friends both Spanish and English for all their support and offers of help. Although I lost some faith in human nature I know my friends who are good people, will rebuild it. Please be very aware. JEAN REITERBUND. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Gran Alacant Advertiser, The Gran Alacant Evangelical Tabernacle (Gran Alacant Church) (GAC) (http://www.GranAlacantChurch.org) has evolved into an anti-Catholic, anti-Christmas, anti-image and anti-intellectual sectarian cult under the dictates of leader Pino Cinquemani. Jesus Loves People (JLP) (http://www.helig.com) has evangelised in Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Alicante during the past decade. In August 2013, it became apparent that the small church community (GAC) that I had personally supported during some years, had evolved into a sectarian Christian cult of sorts. In hindsight, I do regret my previous support to that church community, as the evangelism through JLP is today misconceived locally as associated with that sectarian cult, by logo style semblances. Reciprocally, Jesus Loves People (JLP) (http://www.helig.com) and Gran Alacant Evangelical Tabernacle (GAC) (http://www.GranAlacantChurch.org) want no association to each other. The substance of disagreement can be read online here: http://kyrkor.be/Gran-Alacant-Church-of-Pino-Cinquemani.pdf Best regards, Torsten NenzĂŠn

" For now," the mayor asserted," there is no danger of collapse in the near future, but we want to fix the entire bridge. Renovation will cost around 600,000 euro which hopefully will be raised by the government subsidy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------On page 54 is the poster for the big M.A.B.S. show being held in November. This is always one of the highlights of the year, with many local people taking part. -----------------------------------You may remember a few months ago, a reader asked if we could get a bus stop shelter placed between the church and the fountain roundabout. This has now happened. The picture right shows the location of the shelter. ------------------------------------
An email to us
Hi Sandra & Barry, A follow up to your feature on rubbish bins last month. I believe the rubbish disposal system here is very good, but it is let down by 'eejits'. Living close to a rubbish bin I'm constantly aware of the problems The 'eejits' who can get their rubbish bag in the rough direction of the bin, but not actually in it! This encourages other 'eejits' to put their rubbish on top. The 'eejits' who leave great piles of garden rubbish by the bin which encourages other 'eejits' to dump all manner of rubbish on top. The 'eejits' who stuff enormous objects (large cardboard boxes, water heaters etc) into the bin. These are reluctant to leave the bin - they get jammed up - and cause the driver to make a horrendous noise as he crashes the bin up & down to free the object. The 'eejits' who cannot operate the bin without making a noise like WW111 - a bit wearing all day & a real treat at 6am! The 'totters' who arrive all day & night in rattling old vans, leave the van running whilst they dismantle the contents of the bin, spilling much of it on the road. This is not an absolute list of offenders - there are others! Santa Pola operate a back up system of a person in a small van who comes around to solve the problems caused by the 'eejits'. Unfortunately, they seem to think the offenders are the residents living close to the bins and in clearing up slam the bin lid at least ten times! The bins look as though they are reaching the end of their lives. Can we have some quiet replacement bins please Loreto? 'Eejits' please show some more respect. Chris
Summed up brilliantly Chris

HELP!! I am returning to the U.K in the new year I need homes for 4 cats all neutered bout 5 or 6 years old, if I can’t find homes I will have to have them put to sleep as I would hate to think they were having to fend for themselves on the streets as they have never had to. please contact Jenny 966910554 or 622103539 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Barry & Sandra I have just received an email of a notice via our administrative office, from the Police Local. It is in Spanish but I could make out that they are getting tough on garden waste being dumped at the bins, and imposing large fines if seen doing this. This is a massive problem at the top of G.A where all the properties have gardens. What are you supposed to do with it ? I know there's a place in Santa Pola where they take it, but if you have no car, or a small car, you couldn't get it there. Where I live in England, the council provides large bags for 'green waste' which they collect every week with the other recyclable materials, for composting, then used in the parks. ( In Spain it obviously all goes to landfill, ultimately producing methane, a 'greenhouse gas'). Could you ask Loreto when you next see her, if it would be possible to provide bins for garden waste, as they do for other materials at the rubbish bins? This would not have to be mixed with the general rubbish and so not go to landfill, but put in an area to compost, maybe after shredding the larger bits, then used for mulch by the Parks Dept. for plants ? This would be better for the environment and the local would be a lot tidier! With best wishes Rose
A rough translation of the police letter
We received the following e- mail of Police of Santa Pola , reporting : " Good morning , I AM THE LOCAL POLICE OFFICER OF SANTA POLA , MANAGER OF ALL ASPECTS OF THE MUNICIPAL AND INPUT OREDENANZAS OF THEM THE CITIZENS LIVING IN THE PUBLIC SPACE . Based on the above, please take precautions appropriate to avoid any incident pernicious to the Community .
It has been noticed by the Town Hall, just how many are helping to tidy up around our bins by depositing their garden rubbish at the specific site made available at the top of the GA hill, or cut up the cuttings, put them into bags and then place in the rubbish bins. This site is marked on our GA map.

This is why there is no finish date. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As our front cover shows, large numbers turned up on the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre car park for all of the running events named after local runner Abel Anton. Over 500 participated in the 10km run in and around Gran Alacant. Raul Martinez, Abel Anton 's nephew, completed the 10.5 kilometer circuit in a time of 35 minutes and 43 seconds, 17 seconds ahead of Juan Jose Martinez, and over a minute before Felix Cuesta, who were second and third. There were events for 10km athletes all the way through to running events for the youngsters. After the events, some of the children took the opportunity to pose with Anton.

Jean Reiterbund.

On page 56 is the poster for the big M.A.B.S. show being held in November. This is always one of the highlights of the year, with many local people taking part.
Saludos Rose. Sandra & Barry

Hi everybody! Just a few words to let you know what’s going on this month., no Moors and Christians parades in November, however there is still something to go and have a look at, the biggest fair in the Costa Blanca that takes place in Cocentaina 1st and 2nd of November, Cocentaina is next to Alcoy, The fair is divided in many areas: medieval, street market, agriculture trade, typical products, food etc‌
In Elche from 26th October to 3rd of November it will be held the XVIII medieval festival, with plenty of activities, theatre, music. You will be able to find all kind of products there. You will need, at least, half a day to see it all. Fiestas in Benidorm from 8th to 10th with music, fireworks. I suppose you know how we, Spanish people, go to cemetery to take flowers to our lost relatives, even if I am not very fond of this tradition I must admit that day, the first of November, the cemetery becomes an impressive place with all these thousand of flowers. Also there are pilgrimages and local fiestas in La Nucia, Tibi, and Onil. Bye- bye friends.

After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in his seat and closed his eyes. As the train rolled out of the station, the young woman sitting next to him pulled out her cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: "Hi sweetheart. It's Sue. I'm on the train." "Yes, I know it's the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting." "No, honey, not with that Kevin from the accounting office. It was with the boss." "No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life".... "Yes, I'm sure, cross my heart!" Fifteen minutes later, she was still talking loudly. When the man sitting next to her had had enough, he leaned over and said into the phone, ... "Sue, hang up the phone and come back to bed."

A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbour and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started.."
Her neighbour asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?"
The little silver-haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster."
Her neighbour decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster."
He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh ........... "Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."

Pola Mar hotel (advert right) is right on the beach front, for your stay in Santa Pola. The £2.99 Special. We went to breakfast at a restaurant, where the 'seniors special' was two eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast for £2.99. 'Sounds good,' my wife said. 'But I don't want the eggs..' 'Then, I'll have to charge you £3.49 because you're ordering ‘a la carte' the waitress warned her. 'You mean I'd have to pay for not taking the eggs?' my wife asked incredulously. 'YES!' stated the waitress.. 'I'll take the special then,' my wife said.. 'How do you want your eggs?' the waitress asked. 'Raw and in the shell,' my wife replied. She took the two eggs home and baked a cake.

EUTHANASIA: THE MOST PAINFUL DECISION When studying our career at the University, we have been taught lots of important and absolutely necessary for becoming a Vet: we have studied Anatomy, Surgical Procedures, Parasitology, and even Statistical Science and Agricultural Economy, but unfortunately nobody taught us the best way to give bad news. A crucial part of our profession is communication with pet and owner, because in most cases the owner declares the pet “is a member of my family”, so, when the pet is suffering a serious process which implies a bad prognosis, the owner suffers too. Explaining in an easy way to the owner what is happening to his pet, specially when we are talking about uncommon or complicated diseases, may sometimes be difficult for us, but no doubt the most difficult thing to explain is when euthanasia is a real option. There are some extreme cases when the only help the Vet can provide, is to stop the animal from suffering via euthanasia. Since most clients think suffering is useless, they consider euthanasia is the only reasonable option when pet’s quality of life falls down. We share this opinion, but, of course, taking a decision like this is the owner’s exclusive matter. All we can do is to give some advice to the owner in order to make him take the most logical decision. Euthanasia proceeding is always performed with the maximum politeness possible, so we must minimize the pain, panic and anguish the animal is already feeling due to the disease is actually suffering. The first step implies the owner has to sign a consent form, similar to the one we use when the animal is undergoing a surgical process or anaesthetic. After signing the paper, the owner decides if he prefers to stay with the pet till the end or not, and also if he wants to have the ashes back after the cremation. These are very personal decisions, so we respect them in every case. This is a hard moment for the Vet as well, because normally he knows the pet for a long time, and in addition he has the task of sharing the owner’s pain in such a difficult occasion, which is never easy. Euthanasia proceeding is always performed the same way: a sedative injection is given, and, when it makes the effect, a second injection, which consists of a intravenous anaesthetic overdose is given as well. This second injection stops heartbeat, breath and brain activity in a matter of seconds, and, of course, is completely painless. We must remark again that the owner has the right of staying with his pet till the end if he wants. In most cases, when the animal has passed away, the owner wants to stay a few minutes with the pet to say goodbye. If that is the case, we leave the room and leave for five minutes the owner alone with the pet. After everything has finished, the most logical option is to call the crematory, because burying animals is illegal. A few days later, the crematory will send a cremation certificate, which explains the cremation has been done properly, according to local laws, and, of course, if the owner wanted the ashes back, together with the certificate they send a small box containing the ashes. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
I well remember the feeling of utter confusion the first time I drove a right-hand drive car out here in Spain; everything seemed to be the wrong way round, and a day didn’t pass without the occupant of the passenger seat (usually my wife) yelling “wrong side, wrong side!” at least once. But we like to visit Gran Alacant during the UK winter months, when we can get some respite from the worst that the British weather can chuck at us. It makes sense for birds to migrate south in the winter as well – there is more natural food to be had, better weather and a good prospect of survival in order to return north to breed. But here’s a bird, some of whose population have got things the wrong way round, and actually leave Spain to go to the UK in winter! While walking around the Clot this year, you might have noticed some large black birds with downcurved beaks flying around the lower-lying marshy areas. This is the Glossy Ibis or Morito Común in Spanish. From a distance, they appear to be all-black, but viewed close up in good light you can see that they are anything but; a wide range of colours can be seen as shown in my photograph, taken on the main pool of the Clot in September this year. It has been a good year for these birds, they began to breed in Spain only within the last ten to fifteen years, and record numbers have been seen this summer in the large El Hondo reserve near Elche. They have had breeding success in the Clot as well. It is being seen with increasing regularity in the UK, and mostly in winter, but the interesting thing is that ringing recoveries prove that many of these visitors are Spanish born and bred. No-one knows why they should be doing this “reverse migration”, but it seems to be a well-established movement. Most of the breeding population does, however, move south for the winter, although several remain here in place on the Costa Blanca. These birds feed on a variety of insects, worms, fish, amphibians – in fact anything which will give nourishment. That curved beak is used to good effect to dig food out of muddy water margins and recently-ploughed fields, so they are opportunistic feeders. The Ibis was the subject of religious veneration in ancient Egyptian and Turkish cultures, and the Ibis symbol can be seen in Egyptian hieroglyphs. It’s still used as a symbol today, but in the more mundane forms of things like hotels, banks, bioscience companies, ballistic systems, publishing corporations and even the study of silica in quaternary sediments, whatever that is! See you next month.

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. 'Have you ever done anything of particular merit?' St. Peter asked. 'Well I can think of one thing,' the cowboy offered. 'On a trip to the Bad Lands out in North Dakota , I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen.
