Hello everyone With Halloween this month, please send us pictures of your fancy dress around the urbanisation. Big event this month was the Annual Santa Pola Mixed Rinks Bowls Tournemant held on Gran Alacant. The Santa Pola Town Hall sponsors this, which has grown and grown over recent years. Because our magazine has so many pages, it is very expensive to print every month. When you advertise with us your advert fee also enables your advert to be seen on our internet website. We help to promote your business by recommending you to others if we are asked. You will also receive a supply of magazines. When advertises drop out, their copies are given to the advertiser that takes their place. No one gets something for nothing these days!!!, even in the magazine with no advert price increases for over eight years. Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 52 at the bowls club.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! What is wrong with people. Can you believe it???!! A row of rubbish bins, one especially for cardboard boxes. Just fold them down and put them in the bin. But no...lets just chuck them all over the floor for someone else to clear away. Some of them even blowing into the road. BIN FOR CARD!! possibly too far away!! Why can’t people just show a bit of RESPECT, whether it is putting rubbish in bins. Not parking in the way of others, and not making excessive noise late at night. JUST DON’T BE SELFISH to your neighbours. ---------------------You may have noticed that the plot for the new Church is being excavated. The photos on page 5 may help you see its location, with the Gabi Market in the background. -----------We mentioned last month about the lack of classrooms for the Gran Alacant school. More space is now being provided as our picture on the right shows. Our Mayor and the Councillor of Education have had more talks in Valencia about the future new school. Land has been allocated and plans are drawn up and ready. -----------------------There are a wide range of courses and workshops being offered in the International Library of Gran Alacant. The City of Santa Pola , through its Department of Culture and Gran Alacant has prepared for the course 2013-2014 a program of workshops and courses in the International Library of Gran Alacant , covering various themes and intended audiences of different ages. The language workshops are the most requested, especially those relating to the English language. The course we offer has many levels : From Basic to Conversation, the first and conversation languages are focused on preparing students for them to be submitted to the Cambridge exams, as has occurred with students who took the June tests this year, with highly satisfactory results.

Computer file pictures of the new Gran Alacant Church were not available, so we scanned inkjet prints. Not very good quality, but it gives us all an idea of what the new building may look like

For children we offer English public preschool and primary and new for this year : "Baby English ", a workshop for parents and babies in which a native teacher teaches two days a week "classes" of English through games, songs and play activities. In languages we also want to emphasize that we will continue to offer French, German, Chinese and new this year, Russian, some basic levels . The Cultural Association is working with the library offering courses in Valencian oral level, elementary and mitjà for those who wish to sit examinations or simply want to learn our language. The workshops offer also includes physical and sport, like the strong following that pilates has. This year we offer also maintenance sessions. Also included are the ballroom dancing courses. The last set of workshops that will be offered include creative workshops: creative pastry shop ( cakes decorated cakes) , craft workshop for adults , creative workshops for children on Saturday mornings and Friday afternoons . The deadline to collect information and make entries begins on Monday September 9 . Most courses will start on October 1 and finalize some others in June and July 31. For any questions please call the International Library of Gran Alacant or write to email santapola.biga1 @ gmail.com . -----------------------

AN EMAIL TO US This is the first time for several years that we decided to stay out here in GA for the August.I was saddened to see how the Carabassi beach has become so commercial - beach bars, sunbeds, inflatables, pedaloes etc.I accept that many people enjoy these facilties and they provide jobs and revenue but I would like to think that the local authorities would try to ensure the beach does not become a mini Benidorm . The music from these bars is very loud and I do not think an evening swim in the beautiful Mediterranean, quite along way from the shore, should be spoilt by hearing songs with the lyrics Mother F..... !! The lady who hoped for better facilities for wheel chair users could try going to Playa Lisa which has dedicated parking right by the best facilities I have ever seen for disabled people Judith Williams

Unfortunately this beach belongs to Elche Council so Santa Pola Town Hall have no say over it. ----------------------Hi both Know it has been Santa Pola fiestas – but just wondered what was the outcome of Loreto’s discussion with the police as have now heard of 3 more thefts – same modus operandi (not our guests thank goodness)! But still worrying for GA/ Santa Pola tourism Haidee

We made Loreto aware of the above. She then had words with the police, again. -----------------------

The Netball Spain 2013 Tour Woo, what an event??? With everyone now back home and back to real life it's time to sum up the Hottest trip of the Summer!! A full week of sun, sea, food, cocktails, new friends and of course netball it's time to start planning 2014, it has a lot to live up too!! The week started with some settling in time at the accommodation with time spent soaking up the sun by the pool only moving to cool off and turn over, lol. 1st night out was a Race Night at Big Al's in Masa Square, Gran Alacant. The Netball Spain girls cleaned up with so many winners on the night we had to change some of our names!! BBQ night was next, the first opportunity for the whole group to meet and get to know each other, needless to say Netball was the hot topic of the evening. It's amazing how leagues and matches vary throughout the country. Friday morning was a huge breakfast at Not Just Desserts in Gran Alacant to build up our strength for a day of beach games and challenges - obstacle courses, electric fences, netball rounders; you name it, we did it, GO TO PAGE 8

the sun bathers on Carabasi beach had plenty to keep them entertained that day. Dinner at El Texicano followed, fabulous food and cocktails led onto to karaoke in Molly Malones!! After a good nights rest (or maybe not!!), a day of netball at Grupo de Receacion la Deportiva was in store for Saturday. The chance to develop skills and learn some new drills in the morning was followed by mixed match play in the afternoon to prepare for our visiting team match on Sunday. A quiet night allowed fresh faces for our matches versus Rojales Ladies on Sunday, 2 games and 2 wins for the Netball Spain girls!!! Rojales were tough competition and tested all players in every position, a great experience for everyone on the court. Cowgirl themed prize night at the Gran Mundo Chinese restaurant was next; prize winners were, Emily Murdoch, Thea Adamson Lewis, Vicki Twell, Jenny Black and player of the tournament Sarah Risnes. Monday was a day of rest, some girls ventured the short distance to Alicante for some sight seeing and shopping while others enjoyed a day by the pool. With some players heading home it was the chance to say goodbye to new friends for life. With everyone departing by Tuesday it was a sad farewell to each other and plans made to meet up again at future trips. A great bunch of girls made this trip a pleasure to run and Netball Spain can't wait to see them all again next year. Roll on 2014!!! ------------------------

M.A.B.S. GARDEN PARTY The 9th of September hosted by Susan and Stuart the M.A.B.S. garden party sprung into life. With thunder storms expected we held our breath, but the thunder held off and the sun shone on the fifty guests who attended. Music was presented by the talented Big Kev who also compared and did Irish bingo and an auction of restaurant vouchers, which were donated by Aquarius, Tres Beso, and Casanova, plus an afternoon of pampering with Simone. Our lovely Joe gave four hours of housework. The Rich Bitch Show Bar in Benidorm gave a voucher for the best seat available for four people with a bottle of champange. The best sunhat was won by Keith who looked delightful in his hat decked with flowers. A raffle was run by Susan Gorfin. Sangria donated by Mary Flanagan, bread and balloons by Susan and a new bar erected by Stuart our hosts. The bar was looked after by Bill and Lin Hodges. The M.A.B.S. cake shop supplied the cakes, with the remaining sold at the end of the party. Decorations Jayne donated, with the help of Karen, the garden looked fit for a queen. Table service was done perfectly by Mathew and Kianna. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The money raised at the party was 961 euros, any extra wine is to be sold off and added to the total. Thank you all again for your support. Our next venture will be our show at Vivaldi the 4th-5th-6th of November. Tickets will be available in October. Please support us, GRAN ALACANT needs you. The final count for the garden party is â‚Ź1001.50. Jean Reiterbund, fundraiser.

There were many pictures sent in for the M.A.B.S. garden party so we have placed the rest on our website. --------------

Life Resort on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 October. Each evening will present two one act comic plays; “The Balancing Act” and “Nobody Famous”. ''There will also possibly be a short sketch featuring our most senior member - Stella. 'Nobody famous' - a lesson here about fake fortune tellers. Sometimes they get it right and the results can be staggering! Be careful what you wish for. 'The Balancing Act' - features ex-pats living on the Costa, with a twist. Is Archie just a serial womaniser, or is there more to this? The truth is revealed, much to his wife's surprise.'' Regrettably tickets prices have had to increase to €7 euros, due to the increased cost of hiring the Life Resort theatre, and are available from 966 181 113, 966 181 194 or 628 774 461. Why not check out the new website www.gasp-theatre.org, where as well as reserving tickets, you can see all about GASP, including photo galleries of previous productions. As before it is hoped that a donation can be made to Santa Pola Cruz Roja, so when you buy a ticket not only are you in for a great evening, but you are helping your community. -------------------

FOR THE OLDIES, ....... like me. Any oldie fancy getting them limbs moving a bit more. How about one afternoon a week at the sports centre, playing a bit of football. Walking pace of course. No tackling. No getting hurt. Just a gentle afternoon. Contact Barry here at the magazine. -------------------

AN EMAIL TO US “On our recent visit to GA we noticed a lot of improvements which is always great to see. Everywhere looked cleaner with weeds that were overgrown in May now cleared and the litter problem seemed a lot less in evidence. The building of the new apartments at the end of our road is welcome even though our beach view will probably suffer but at least the area may finally be free of people walking their dogs and letting them foul in this area. Alas though the sad sight of the dilapidated apartment and shop complex "Sueno Azul" is still an eye sore on the main street. Does anyone know if there is a way of getting in touch with the committee/management company that look after these apartments to see if they would do a paint job on the building. It would make such a difference to what is actually a nice building with it's bell tower” thanks Fiona

Loreto says that this "Sueno Azul" area refuse to form a community so will not pay any refuse charges to keep the area clean. -----------------------13 brown direction signs have emerged over the urbanisation. So many people could find no roads signs, so it is hoped that these will help. ------------------GA residents above the beach bars on the coast, have filed for compensation against our Town Hall and Elche Council for allowing the noise. If the Town Hall has to begin reimbersing all of those effected by noise from bars, there is unlikely to be any money left to do anything for Gran Alacant in the future. Also, maybe in the future, we will have nothing at all on Gran Alacant deterring any summer visitors or residents.

What do you think? ----------------Two new bus stop shelters are to be built. The first was outside the old farmacia and the new one will be on the stretch of road between the Church and the School. ----------------more news next month................Sandra & Barry

¿Qué le pasa a la gente? ¡¿Puedes creerlo?!

-----------------------------------------------------------M.A.B.S.

Sandra & Barry

Why Men Wear Earrings Did you ever wonder why earrings became so popular with men ?

A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is wearing an earring.

The man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow, and is curious about his sudden change in "fashion sense"

The man walks up to him and says, "I didn't know you were into earrings." "Don't make such a big deal, it's only an earring," he replies sheepishly.

His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods him to ask, "So, how long have you been wearing one ?"

"Ever since my wife found it in my truck."

ORIGINAL ITALIAN PIZZA’s After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in his seat and closed his eyes. As the train rolled out of the station, the young woman sitting next to him pulled out her cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: "Hi sweetheart. It's Sue. I'm on the train." "Yes, I know it's the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting." "No, honey, not with that Kevin from the accounting office. It was with the boss." "No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life".... "Yes, I'm sure, cross my heart!" Fifteen minutes later, she was still talking loudly. When the man sitting next to her had had enough, he leaned over and said into the phone, ... "Sue, hang up the phone and come back to bed."

One thing often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola on google, rang them up and booked onto their famous Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine Reserve. Gary and Wayne the owners who live in Gran Alacant were happy to pick us up on route to the dive centre 10 minutes away. We had a fantastic trip and when we sat down for Tea, Coffee or Beers afterwards they told me I could actually go scuba diving!! I thought it was only the Jacques Cousteau’s and professionals that could do it. We booked to do the Discover Scuba Diving course designed to teach you step by step and although I was nervous to begin with the instructor was very professional and we

ended up having a lot of fun. It wasn’t as scary as first thought and we got photos to prove we did it! We travelled in the dive van to the site and then started with a theory lesson. Then we entered the water from the beach so it was nice and shallow and we completed some exercises designed to put you at ease. Then we went for our first dive in shallow water but later after a break for lunch we got to go back in and try a little deeper. This was the best one as I was so relaxed by then and we saw loads of fish and Octopus. We are all going to book for our Open water Diver licences and we get 10% off future courses and dive kit too. Dive Academy run these courses every day of the year what-ever the weather and my son wants to become an instructor now so he is working towards his Instructor Development Course in November 2013. You only have to book one day before and there is lots of information on the website and facebook. Tel: 966699088 or 648463310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu)

Sunday 15th September 2013 - Gentlemen Versus the Ladies

In this annual event six teams of men play against six teams of ladies and after six ends the men move up a rink whilst the ladies remain. After eighteen ends the competition finishes. This year the ladies were two players short so two men suitably attired played for them. Colin Armitage the club captain and Chris Merry the club vice captain were chosen. At the end the ladies won on four of the six rinks, drew one and lost one. The final shot count being 189 to the ladies and 176 to the men. Well done the ladies. Prizes were presented to Jan Soars, Wendy Oxley, Wendy Sheridan and Babs Caiger the highest scoring rink for the ladies and to Mike Farrelly, Iain Sheridan, George Wilkinson and Tony Finan the highest scoring rink for the men.

Last month, September, saw the playing of the annual Santa Pola Mixed Rinks Bowls Tournament at the Monte Mar Club in Gran Alacant. Each year since 2006

this event has been staged and each year the competition between the team has been of the highest calibre. A total of 32 teams of 4 took part in the event which was held between 17th and 20th September. As an appetiser for the main event the club staged a charity practice session on the afternoon of Monday 16th September where a total of 100â‚Ź was raised for a local charity. Bowling took place over the next four days with teams from the Costa Blanca, Costa Almeria and England taking part. The semi-finals and finals took place on Friday 20th by which time the 32 teams had been reduced to 8. Four teams, who had finished second in their groups played for the Santa Pola Plate and four teams who won their groups played for the Santa Pola Mixed Rinks trophy, the main trophy of the competition. In the Plate the four semi-finalists came from Country Bowls, Monte Mar and two teams from Quesada. The winners of the Plate were the Country Bowls team of Steve Pearson, Peter Whitehall, Lynne Bishop and Eric Bishop who beat the home team of Babs Caiger, john Caiger, Ethel Finan and Tony Finan in the final. The two Quesada teams played for 3rd and 4th places. In the Mixed Rinks Trophy the four teams involved came from Monte Mar. La Marina and two teams from San Luis. The two San Luis teams contested the 3rd and 4th places and the home team of Monte Mar, Geraldine Fisher, Ron Campbell, Mike Farrelly and Gordon Fisher overcame strong opposition from the La Marina outfit of Jeanette Gugerly, David Gugerly, Janet Parsons and Peter Parsons. This was the first time since 2006 that Monte Mar had won this event. After both finals had been completed we had the closing ceremony which was conducted by Stan Routledge, Vice Chairman of the Monte Mar Club. Stan thanked all the organisers, helpers, spectators and players and also thanked Antonio Martinez, owner of the bowls club, and his staff for their hard work during the event. He also thanked the Santa Pola Council for their continued support for the event which he hoped would be a permanent fixture on the Costa Blanca Bowls Calendar. He then introduced Loreto Serrano Councillor for Tourism in Santa Pola, Loreto Cascales, Councillor for Gran Alacant and other dignitaries from the Council and opposition party. Loreto Serrano added her thanks for the very successful event which she hoped would continue in future years. Antonio also thanked all those involved. He said he hoped that funding and support for the event would be available in future years. Before the Prize Presentation we were given a gymnastics display by some young girls from a gymnastics school in Santa Pola. The girls were so excited and put on a lovely display for the watching crowd. They really appreciated the applause of the crowd and also the ice lollies they were treated to after. Prizes were then presented to the 8 teams. (pictures pages 58 & 59) Please visit our web site at www.montemarbowls.com for more info about our Bowls and Social Club. New members are always welcome.

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Baked Jammy Doughnuts Improved

Directly from the oven, these look like a cross between a yeasted scone and a bread roll. Don't let that deceive you, they have a great texture - it's all in the finish! The dough is very sticky, hence the oil for rolling. Makes about 8 or 9 large cakes. Ingredients 1. 1 lb bread flour 2. 1 tsp salt 3. 4 tbsp oil 4. 8 fl oz milk 5. 2 oz sugar 6. 1 egg 7. 1 tbsp instant yeast 8. sugar for coating icing or castor sugar, choice is yours. 9. chocolate, raspberry or strawberry sauce for filling 10. Extra oil Method lIf the milk is from the fridge, warm slightly, just till tepid. lIn a large bowl put in the following order, salt, sugar, oil, egg, milk, yeast and finally flour. If using a machine, knead on low speed 3 min, medium speed 3 min. lIf by hand, a good 10 minutes, until you have a soft, very sticky dough. lCover and allow to double in bulk. lPour one or two tbs of oil onto your work surface and spread it around. lTurn out the dough, coat it in the oil and roll to about 1/2 inch thick and cut out with a greased round cutter. Size depends on the ratio of cake to jam you like! A 3 inch cutter yields a big doughnut. lPlace on a lined baking tray, leaving room for expansion. lCover with cling film and allow to rise until puffy but get the oven hot before they are completely risen. lBake at 200c until golden brown. lRemove onto cooling rack and when cool enough to handle, lightly brush with oil. Allow to cool completely before tossing in sugar and piping in the filling. lTIP - a jumbo syringe from the chemist does the job really well! lPlace with the hole up, on their sides to stop the filling running out. lFOR FREEZING - bake, cool and fill with jam, when defrosted, rub a small amount of oil over the doughnut and toss in sugar.

Faith the pony who has a prosthetic leg has a new friend. Faith’s carer’s Sue and Rod Weeding, co founders of The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales saw young Cieran Kelso, an 8 year old double amputee from Northwich in Cheshire, with his parents, being interviewed on BBC Breakfast a few days ago. Sue explained “The TV was on in the background and I heard Winter, the dolphin from Florida with a prosthetic tail fin mentioned. I was intrigued because we had a discussion with Dwayne Mara who lives in New Orleans about this..He makes Faith’s and Molly the ponies prosthetic legs and is friends with Kevin Carroll from Alabama who made the fin for this dolphin. Winter was caught up in a rope in a crab trap and Faith was severely injured by a rope wrapped round her leg while tied to a tree so there circumstances were similar. The interview was with Cieran and his parents Gary and Gemma. Cieran had both his legs amputated below the knee when he was only 13 months old. He had contracted meningococcal septicemia. Cieran had seen the film “Dolphin Tale” starring Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson and wanted to swim with Winter. After constant fundraising, which incidentally is still ongoing for Cierans future, the couple were able to afford a pair of prosthetic flippers to allow Cieran to fulfill his dream which he did this year. Sue continued “ I like many others are I’m sure amazed at how brave this young lad is. He has such a positive attitude for one so young. Like Faith he wants to be treated as normal and get on with his life which I’m sure he will. Just because you have prosthetic limbs doesn’t mean you are any different from anybody else.”. Faith and Cieran are both on Facebook and Faith has contacted him and invited him to meet up in Spain sometime in the future. They are going to keep in touch with each other and Faith has sent him a copy of her new book about her and Molly the pony which has been written for children. Also a T-shirt and DVD all about the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. Gemma added “ I am sure Cieran and Faith will meet one day soon and become good pals. It would be great to see Cieran walking Faith down the lane outside the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, what a photograph that will be!” Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre work closely with Rojales town council. Upon hearing about Cieran the mayor and his councilors have extended a warm welcome to this brave lad and his family when they come to visit Faith and have said they would like to meet them personally.

For further information about Cieran and his dedicated parents go to www.cierankelso.co.uk or search on Facebook. Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

PROTECTED SPECIES TRADING (and some other illegal trades)

About 2 weeks ago, we found in a local newsaper (Diario Información of Alicante), an article about a pet shop placed in La Marina (Elche), which had been closed by the Guardia Civil. This shop used to sell pet foods, some other goods, and non-domestic Spanish birds, such as verderones, jilgueros and pardillos, very well known for the way they sing (and for the fact that they are endangered and protected species, so catching, selling or just having them at home, is considered a crime). The cages with the birds were placed in a secret, non-visible room at the back part of the shop, and the trading operations with the illegal birds (they also sold non protected birds, such as canaries and budgies), happened only on Sundays, at certain hours, in order to minimize the risk of being caught by the Police or Guardia Civil. Some Guardia Civil agents, wearing normal clothes instead of their uniforms, appeared at the shop and arrested the owners, who had enough time to open some cages and let some of the birds escape for making the evidences disappear, but they didn’t manage to make all of them disappear. We are talking about a double crime: in one hand, selling animals without a license, including some protected birds that cannot be sold in any way, not even having a license for selling animals; in the other hand, the other “non protected” birds they sold, had no documents, such as the CITES code (the one that proves the animal is coming from the legal exotic species trade). And, of course, let’s don’t forget that the shop paid no taxes at all, which implies another crime. It’s very important for everybody to cooperate for stopping this illegal trade, which implies an attack against the environment from the moment the steal animals from it, and a fraud, because, as anyone can imagine, no taxes at all are paid for an illegal trade (same as drugs). Logically, this kind of shops make no advertising at all (the potential clients get informed mouth-to-ear), so, it’s necessary for stopping them, that the citizens realize they must tell immediately the Police if they discover somebody breaking the law like this. We can see, in this case, SEPRONA (environmentspecialized Guardia Civil agents), made a good job and the offenders were caught and punished. Illegal animal trade (Iocal or international), is always a very high profit activity: millions of parrots and tortoises which get ill and die on their way to Europe, and lots of bitches which are forced to have litter after litter while living in extremely small cages, are two parts of the same problem. If we are suspecting there is something illegal about the animal we are intending to purchase, we should let the authorities know. First, we can go to the Vet, OCU (Spanish Consumers Association), or some animal rights association, for some advice. Talking about a high profit illegal trading, it’s also very important on-line medicines sale, via Internet. We can find flea collars, painkillers, even heart tablets, with very interesting prices, and with no need of Veterinary prescription. Well, according to actual Spanish laws, ALL these websites are illegal, since on-line sale of medicines is strictly forbidden in Spain, even if the medicines they sell are real, not fakes, which not always happens…

WHAT’S THAT?

by Mark Etheridge

IN THE CLOT?

You would think that at this time of the year, most animals in the Clot have finished bringing up their youngsters, and are either moving south for the winter or establishing their winter territories for the long haul until the spring brings real warmth back to the area. But there is one type of insect that is hard at reproduction during the autumn months. You can see Dragonflies, often flying coupled together, throughout October and November as they mate and lay their eggs in the pools around the Clot. There are 70 or more different species of dragonflies and their smaller damselfly relatives to be found in Spain, but three of the commonest are in my photos, all taken in the Clot during September this year. The Red Darter is the bright red one, the blue one is the Lesser Emperor Dragonfly, and the black and yellow one is a Black-tailed Skimmer Dragonfly larvae may spend up to 5 years as an underwater nymph, followed by up to six months in the case of the larger species as a flying adult. During this subaquatic time, the larvae (or Naiads) are one of the main small underwater predators, feeding largely on mosquito larvae (hooray!), but also taking tadpoles and small fish. Once they metamorphose into adults, they maintain a predatory lifestyle, continuing to catch flies and mosquitos, and even other smaller dragonflies. Unfortunately for the Dragonfly, they have plenty of enemies themselves, and will be taken by birds, lizards, frogs , spiders and even fish. But enough survive to make them an important part of the wetland ecosystem. You can always tell the difference between Dragonflies and their smaller relative the Damselfly, as a Dragonfly always holds its wings out when at rest on the ground or on a plant. You need never fear the Dragonfly (Libelula in Spanish); they don’t bite or sting, they are far more interested in seeing off rivals and courting the dragonfly ladies than bothering with you! See you next month.

A young ventriloquist is touring Minnesota and puts on a show in a small town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes. Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting, "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype blonde women that way? What does the color of a woman's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It's men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. It's people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general. Pathetically, and all in the name of humor!" The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells: "You stay out of this! I'm talking to that little sod on your knee."
