We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We start this month with a couple of emails to us
Dear Loretta My husband, myself and two grandsons for whom we are Legal Guardians, are here on holiday in the Gran Alacant apartments in Av. Escandinavia for the next five weeks. Since February the eldest grandson has been in wheelchair after losing all use of his legs. The first day we were here I enquired in the Tourist Information Office of the possibility of being able to drive down to Carabassi Beach past the locked barrier on the access road to the life guard station and Blue Monkey facilities. This would at least enable us to unload Thomas and the wheelchair. Both my husband an I are 70 years of age and find it impossible to push Thomas over the steep hill on the boardwalk. When the board walks and barrier etc., were installed the local press stated that foot and vehicle traffic was being restricted to conserve the sanddunes, and that when it was complete the disabled facilities would be considerably improved. When the board walks were constructed, a ramp was built up from the access road and toilets on to the board walk, suggesting that disabled vehicles would be allowed access over the hill and wheel chairs etc., could join the boardwalks at the ramp. At this time of the year the disabled spaces in Arenales are always occupied. We have been coming to Gran Alacant several times a year for the last 28years always going to the Carbassi Beach and therefore feel very annoyed that we are now effectively denied access. We would be very pleased to receive your comment and help. Yours sincerely Gillian Wilson
From us after our meeting with Loreto. Over the winter many pavements at road junctions have been made wheelchair friendly. The areas you mention come under the Elche Council which we cannot help you with.
-----------------Hi Barry, A thought you may like to run past Loreto when next you meet. Since the local authority is able to influence local policing, & we all seem to suffer the same annoying problems with dog's mess, rubbish around bins & occasional bouts of vandalism etc. I have a suggestion. The local police invariably drive around in very visible cars - 2 to a car. How much more effective (probably twice!) would they be if they operated singley? Would it not also be the case if they were to walk, saving money, the planet & being better able to spot details that their presence may prevent, thus improving the quality of life for all of us? This will probably be totally alien to the present culture & current practise so may encounter some resistance, but the police SERVE the community, so I feel it worthy of consideration. Many thanks,
Don't know if you got our administrators reply to me (having copied him into the original to you) Apparently there are single officers appointed in Elche & other towns who are known as Policia de Barrio. He suggests they are contacted to determine the success (or otherwise) of the scheme. Also the original e-mail came from me - Mike Williams President - & not from Judith although we share this address. Regards, Mike Williams President - Monte y Mar 3.2G

Had quite a chat about this subject. Police here as in the uk have to go about in pairs for their own safety. Many things they are called to may seem a bit mundane, but of course they could easily arrive at a situation where one person on their own could well be in an awkward situation. They are not allowed to work out of uniform, only when given permission in cases such as on drug duty or similar. The guardia and the Local police do work together. If our two local police officers on GA are called away, other police come to the area to keep the patrols ongoing, so there is always a car on Gran Alacant. Two offices are in the GA Council Office for around two hours every day, so, you can ask for them to be made available to talk with you if you have any problems or concerns.
-------------------A press release to us on August-5th The electric vehicle company Kills Europe, based in Alicante, has delivered two electric bikes, Tiger model 3000, to the local police to the town of Santa Pola. The event was attended by the Mayor Miguel Zaragoza, accompanied among others by the council of Public Safety, Antonio Perez Huerta, and JosĂŠ Miguel Zaragoza, the Local police chief, who was handed the hand electric bikes from Abat CEO of Europe, Vicente Navarro, and the director of the Department of Engineering, Vicente Mora. The mayor noted that "the initiative of the Town of Santa Pola to incorporate electric vehicles into the fleet of the local police or reporters agents, is a major cost savings to the municipal coffers, as well as reducing fuel consumption, which is only 50 cents per 100 kilometers, compared to the three or four euros which it costs in gasoline. " Also, Miguel Zaragoza has stressed the "important action towards a sustainable municipality takes place with this type of vehicle for non-CO2 emissions, and avoid noise pollution, which is beneficial to the citizen as the idea is that the police are close to them without disturbing or make noise ". The Town of Santa Pola is a pioneer in using this type of mobility for their public bodies, and therefore wants to set an example not only to other municipalities in Spain. The two units 3000 Tiger model consist of a brushless motor type incorporated inside the rear wheel, with a range of 70-90 km. depending on the driving mode, and a nominal power of 3000 W, reaching a maximum speed of 85 km / h. ----------------------A press release to us on 7-August-2013 "We will change a glass full of cigarette ends for a soda". This is the motto that the Department of Beaches, through the Local Development Agency in collaboration with Urbaser, who conducted for the second consecutive year through an environmental awareness campaign every Monday and Tuesday of August in the bars of the beaches. Pier on the beach of the Hermitage, the Blue and Gold Beach in the Terrace of L'Arena, Titanic in Cala III of Santiago Bernabeu, Poseidon and Pe単a Grande in Cala Levante Beach and I Santiago Bernabeu, and kiosks Tamarit I and II in Tamarit Beach, in order to sensitize and raise awareness about the pollution caused by cigarette butts on our beaches. The Beaches Councillor, Loreto Serrano, has high satisfaction expressed by users of the beaches and the good results that have been obtained during the first two days, 5 and August 6, on the beaches of the Chapel and Terrace of l'Arena, with the collaboration of the bars of Lucia and Blue Pier and accounted for in just two days a total of 4,413 butts, demonstrating a lack of awareness and good environmental practices by many smokers. To do this, the campaign is being conducted on the beach through the information provided by the Service Quality Beaches (ADL) and Cleaning Service (Urbaser), which offered some gloves for collecting butts and a glass, and as a gift the stall changes butts to glasses of soda. So far the campaign has been well received in general, highlighting that children and foreigners have proved the most environmentalists in collecting butts. However, there are still many people who think that throwing a cigarette butt in the sand does not affect at all the environmental health of the beach. A cigarette filter alone is enough to contaminate 3 litres of sea water, this contamination is that the filters are designed to absorb the tar and chemicals such as cadmium, lead and arsenic and, when in contact with the seawater, these toxic substances are dissolved in water. It takes between 5 and 20 years to disappear naturally, and butts are easily confused butts as food for many marine species, in fact cigarette filters found in the digestive systems of whales, dolphins, sea birds, turtles ... Therefore, the question of "what we can find on a beach santapolera? ", change the answer to" sand, water and snuff butts "with" sand, water, health and welfare for everyone! Jean. -------------------We have been asked many times recently about having a bench halfway up the hill from the fountain roundabout to Maxcoop. It is a long haul with nowhere to rest during the walk. Loreto phoned those concerned and when they have distributed all of the necessary furniture for the new market area, they will keep back a bench for re siting. A place has been ear marked, where a concrete plinth will have to be built before the bench can be sited. So..........a resting place is on the way. -------------------We have been asked by the Gran Alacant Farmacia to mention that during September the electronic repeat prescriptions will be in place. First go to your local doctor who will give you a prescription with a bar code on. You then take that to the farmacia with your zip card then you will be able to get repeat prescriptions without having to keep visiting your doctor. Any questions just ask at the GA Farmacia. --------------------

Loreto tells us that the next big project for GA will be the new school, which will take priority over all else. The existing school is meant for 450 students and at the moment has over 600 attending. Our Council is not in big debt like many others, so, in the forseeable future they are taking great care not to spend unnecessarily. -------------------NETBALL IN SPAIN For a few months now we have been in contact with Netball Spain about bringing netball players over from the UK to play, train and learn. Netball success in Gran Alacant
The first netball tournament to be played in the Grupo De Recreacion Deportiva was a huge success on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August in Gran Alacant. Netball Spain had 2 teams of players from a variety of clubs throughout England and Northern Ireland. These players spent 1 week in Gran Alacant enjoying the delights of the area, including fabulous meals in El Texicano and Gran Mundo; Cowgirl prize night in Big Al's and a full day of team building games on the stunning Carabasi beach. The highlight of their week was 2 full days of netball in the Grupo De Recreacion Deportiva, 1 day spent learning new skills, developing their game and playing mini matches against each other and the 2nd day spent playing 2 matches against the Rojales Netball Club who were great competition for us.
With a few ladies from the Gran Alacant area and Gema from Grupo De Recreacion Deportiva herself joining in the activities, it was a super weekend of netball that brought this growing sport to the Gran Alacant area for the first time. Many thanks to everyone in Gran Alacant who met us during this event and joined in the fun, with special mention to Gema and Antonio from the sports centre.
With many of the girls keen to come again next year with their full teams keep an eye out for our 2014 events!!! Karen Netball Spain --------------------

---------------------------------------M.A.B.S. M.A.B.S. M.A.B.S.

A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office. "Is it true," she wanted to know, "that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?" "'Yes, I'm afraid so,"' the doctor told her. There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, "I'm wondering, then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked 'NO REFILLS'.."

A Day on Tabarca
Pola Mar hotel Dive Academy A woman came home, screeching her car into the driveway, and ran into the house. She slammed the door and shouted at the top of her lungs, 'Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!' The husband said, 'Oh my God! What should I pack, beach stuff or mountain stuff?' ' Doesn't matter,' she said. 'Just get out.'

One of the things quite often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola via google, rang them up and booked on a Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine reserve. Gary and Wayne the owners who live in Gran Alacant were happy to pick us up on route to the Dive Centre 10 minutes away in Santa Pola. We were teamed up with a mixed group of English and Dutch families and after putting on our wetsuits (mostly back to front) fins and masks (scuba divers frown on them being called flippers and goggles apparently) and headed off to the island on the taxi speedboat. After arriving on Tabarca, Jake our ‘divemaster’ gave us a quick brief on how to put the gear on correctly, safety procedures and marine life we were likely to see. The first site we visited was called the black skull a small rock island about 100 meters from shore. Initially the water is only 1 to 2 meters deep which was great for the kids to gain confidence and the wetsuits actually helped them float. As soon as your mask breaks the surface you can see literally thousands of fish much to the kids and big kids delight. Around the back of the black skull the water is a little bit deeper and the more adventurous amongst us were ‘duck diving’ to the octopus holes Jake expertly spotted. After a quick break we headed to another site and went in the limestone caves, I was a little apprehensive about this at first but the caves turned out to be breath taking and not at all claustrophobic. Again the marine life was spectacular and the water as clear as a swimming pool. We headed back on the boat about 2pm with a boat load of smiley, tired kids and adults alike. It was a great day rounded of nicely with a cold drink in Marina Miramar.

The Easy Horse care Rescue Centre Faith`s book “Diary of a Heroic Horse “
Now available in paperback!
Much has been written in the popular English and European news papers here in Spain over the last two years about Faith the Easy Horse Care Centres now world famous three legged Faith with her boyfriend pony. Faith`s story up until recently has only been available as an e-book but now has gone to print in high colour paperback form after many requests from people by telephone, e-mail and also from the large number of visitors to the centre`s popular Sunday open days. Sue and Rod Weeding co founders of the EHCRC have just returned from visiting Faith at top equine surgeon Gaspar Castelijns new state of the art Equihealth facility in Granollers just outside Barcelona. The couple are very pleased to report that she is very content and happy and is looking Fabulous. She even has a new boyfriend called Empereo a magnificent Spanish stallion who has also had state of the art surgery. He was suffering from crippling arthritis caused by bone disease in the fetlock of his right front leg. This would be like your wrist... but he has to stand on his. He has had metal supports fitted into the bones on either side of the joint to enable him to walk again. At the moment he is in a plaster cast while it all heals. Faith could not be in better hands and the Rescue Centre is very fortunate to be working with such experienced people. Gaspar and his team suggested that Faith should stay with them longer at their clinic because of the high temperatures in the summer months when Faith needs more attention to make sure she is comfortable on her prosthetic leg. Sue and Rod have happily agreed that Faith should stay with them for the Faith with Sue foreseeable future. As this will also give them the time to finish off Faith`s new stable and the access into her garden area. The Rescue Centre has recently rescued two more horses and also taken in another donkey so this now makes a grand total of 57 horses, ponies and donkeys to care for plus finding the time to complete the disabled facilities for visitors as well as the building work for Faith. I am really happy that Faith`s story is now in hard copy “says Sue” “We quite simply would not have come this far without the help and publicity that we have enjoyed from the English speaking press here on the Costa Blanca and beyond. The great group of people that work at these publications have helped us save many many equines. Their dedication to address the difficult issues and help local communities is some times taken for granted I think, but without them and their local knowledge I believe us expats would be far less informed in this area” Faith`s “Diary of a Heroic Horse” is available priced at just €5 at any EHCRC charity shops and at the Recue Centre`s Sunday open day`s 1 till 5 pm. A Spanish printed edition will also be available by the end of August. This is only possible because of the translation skills and the tremendous co-operation and help from Tatiana, Councillor for Education at Rojales Town Council who we have worked very closely with on this and other issues, Sue Weeding explains - “The inspiration for this book came from Molly the amputee pony in the United States. Molly has gone on to become a household name in the U.S. and a symbol of hope to many children and adults who have suffered amputations. She visits patients in hospitals and care homes giving these people inspiration.. We feel that Faith and Molly`s story can do the same here in Spain and in other countries”. I wrote the book mainly for the children “says Sue” “ It explains with the aid of many photographs that just because you have a prosthetic limb or other serious disabilities it really is ok to be different and anything in life is possible.” “We have sent a supply of books over the Atlantic to Kaye and Glen Harris, Molly's rescuers and carers who we now regard as very close friends. The proceeds from all books sold will be split 50/50 between us here at the EHCRC and Molly's foundation in the U.S.” The book is also available to download on Amazon Kindle fire etc. And will soon be available on iTunes and all other Apple devices For more information of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre please see our web site www.easyhorsecare.net

The cost for Rebosy ranges from 75 to 160 euro and in most cases it is a once in a lifetime treatment.
We do all kinds of pain treatments and prescriptions. Normal consultation from 30 euro.
The treatment is painless and lasts for one to two hours and you will be asked your opinion after the treatment. It is successful in 9 out of 10 cases and your physical problems may disappear immediately after being treated!
During the treatment you will simply lie on a couch and relax while the doctor carries out the treatment. The treatment consists of ReBoSy by AA (Restoring Body Symmetry by Advanced Acupuncture) using very fine needles and infrared light, among other things.
Using a level measure for ReBoSy (Restoring Body Symmetry) you can see the difference - before and after treatment.
A small deviation in the level of your pelvis - which you may never have noticed - could give you back or neck problems or even headaches. Because of this you may end up as a patient who has to endure many different medical treatments.
Without knowing it, many of us suffer from instability in the Pelvis which can lead to unequal leg length resulting in a small deviation (Scoliosis) in the column.
New treatment - unknown in U.K. - for lower back pain, headache, migraine, muscular tension, muscular pain(including Lumbar pain) and many more.

AFTER SUMMER CARE
Since holidays (and hottest months), are finished, it’s time to go back to the routinary tasks, and make sure our pets condition is still ok. Having the animal visited by a Vet is not mandatory in most cases. We are asked lots of times every summer about pets suffering from weight loss, apathy, exercise intolerance, massive fur loss, tick infestations… all those things are typical in summer due to high temperatures and humidity. Animals, which usually are more intelligent than people, try to fight against the high temperatures by reducing their physical activity and caloric intake, which will produce, evidently, a weight loss. If they go to the countryside for a walk in summer, even if they are protected by a collar or spot on, may catch some fleas or ticks. Every individual has its “optimum” anti parasite treatment depending on its size, habitat, skin sensitivity… Fur loss is, unfortunately, unavoidable, because is a natural process due to the fur growth cycle. Anyway, in some moments of the year (such as summer), they may shed more than normal, but if the coat keeps shiny and thick (no bald patches), we mustn’t worry about the animal, despite the extra work at home. We can provide some vitamins for improving fur quality, but we will never stop growth-fall fur cycle. When do we have to worry? If after the hot weather is gone, our pet keeps lethargic, without appetite, losing weight, or with a poor coat. Then is time to see the Vet. A skin problem is very likely to appear during the summer, due to high temperatures and humidity, and the higher number of external parasites that attack the animals in summer. A good example would be flea bite allergy. Summer is also the moment when mosquitoes are most active, so if we see something wrong in our pet, it’s recommendable to test its blood for blood parasitic diseases as soon as possible. If there are no symptoms, we recommend to test the blood anyway, but a bit later, in October or November, when mosquito season is finished, just to be sure nothing has happened during the summer. If the results are negative, we can be sure our pet will be OK, at least till next year mosquito season. Nowadays, we can have parasites all year round due to central heating, carpets, etc, but parasites that MUST live outdoors such as mosquitoes and ticks are more common in summer, and even more at night. Ticks live in areas with grass, so we normally won’t find them indoors. There you have some useful Youtube links which explain very well flea cycle, so we will understand perfectly why they are active all year round, and why they are so difficult to control: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHk4mye0FBY In previous articles, we have written about Dipylidium caninum, the tapeworm which is transmitted by fleas. There you can see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVWoW2utjm4 It is highly recommendable to treat the pets against external and internal parasites BEFORE watching these videos… Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán col 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
When you take off in your Ryanair or Easyjet flight, you know that, one way or the other, you are going to land at the other end of your journey. Hopefully it will not be the sort of landing which ends in a smoking hole in the ground, and that you are set for a nice arrival at El Altet airport for your holiday in Gran Alacant or elsewhere on the Costa Blanca. But have you ever wondered what it might be like if you had to stay up in the air for the rest of your life? Pretty awful, I should think, and you would quickly be asking that nice Mr O’Leary how much he would charge you to get off his plane.
Here’s a bird which can live its whole life in the air, the Common Swift or Vencejo común in Spanish. The swift is a fantastic aerial machine, it can achieve speeds of nearly 70 mph in level flight, a rate only exceeded in the avian world by its close relatives the Alpine Swift and the record-holding Needle-tailed Swift at 102 mph. Before anyone objects, yes I know the Peregrine Falcon can hit nearly 250 mph, but that is in a power dive which is gravity assisted!
But back to our swift, which may be seen in large numbers this month. Actually, the ones you are seeing in September are probably not the ones you have been seeing through the height of the summer. These are birds from further north passing through our area in tremendous numbers on their way to Africa, the local breeding birds are already well on their way south. When the youngsters have fledged, there is no point in hanging around to learn how to fly before they go south because they instinctively know what they are doing the moment they drop out of the nest.
You will be able to see swifts in the Clot making frequent drinking and bathing passes over the pool. If you see a swift on the ground, it is probably in deep trouble. Its feet are little more than gripping talons to help it cling to the side of a wall or on its nest; it cannot walk or hop and will have great difficulty taking off from the ground.
So nearly everything in a swift’s life is done in the air – feeding, mating and even sleeping is done on the wing. It is thought that it can send half its brain to sleep, in order to keep some directional control aloft, but scientists are still not entirely clear on this point. Mind you, I don’t know how they worked that out in the first place, perhaps Mr O’Leary lent them a plane..... See you next month.
