It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Two firsts on Gran Alacant this month. The first being the official opening of the very first fountain and landscaped roundabout near to the Gran Alacant school. There was a great turn out to see our Mayor Miquel Zaragoza, accompanied by our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, address the crowd and unveil the plaque and start the fountain. Why can´t the council themselves, or the council ask the builders who left the ground at the side of the road in such a mess to do a bit of landscaping and planting........it currently looks like a dumping ground for the builders rubble. Meetings with people concerned took place 2 weeks prior to our meeting, to discuss various areas on our Urbanisation that needed attention. In some places the builders had fenced areas off, but people were breaking through the fences to let their dogs walk in them. They will continue to fence in, baracade access roads, and do their best to tidy up the land in question. We asked again why there had been no action to our petition for a dog warden. Although this was not given the go ahead, Loreto has had discussions with the police about the ever increasing problem. A log was shown to us of the reports back from the police, who on Feb 2 and 14-18 and 27-31 January, had a blitz, when although they could not catch dogs in the act, they approached numerous owners and told then of the local laws concerning the toileting of their dogs. This is the first step before starting possibly to hand out stiff fines. Various main areas of land were targeted during these dates and is on going. We expressed yet again, the concern of many Gran Alacant residents to this continual problem. What is happening about the new market? There is a great deal going on behind the scenes. This project is

being paid for by the V a l e n c i a n Government. Plans have gone back and forth between them and our Town Hall to get an agreement to the plans, this has now happened and tenders are now going out for the choice of companies to carry out the project. Valencia will see these quotes and they will decide who will carry out the work. It is very long winded, but these processes must all take place to get to the final outcome.

As we said once before, the police rarely used the old one, but a decision has been made to place a mobile unit on the not used taxi rank in front of the council offices, so that the police have a base. Why no fountain on the first roundabout you come to on Gran Alacant? This is something the Town Hall are keen to do but there is a major problem building a fountain here, as one of the major pipeworks needed on Gran Alacant, is positioned under this roundabout, making the costing very expensive although there are still ideas that are being worked on.

British scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the Windshields of their new high speed trains.
Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatter proof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow.. The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.
Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo:

Otra vez, la misma carretera. ¿Por qué no puede el Ayuntamiento pedir a los obreros que hagan un poco de limpieza y ajardinar los bordes de la carretera? Lo han dejado hecho un desastre, parece un vertido de escombros. Han habido reuniones con las personas afectadas, 2 semanas antes de nuestra reunión mensual, para discutir sobre varias zonas de nuestras urbanizaciones que necesitan atención. Los obreros han vallado ciertas zonas, pero la gente se sigue metiendo para pasear a sus perros. Van a continuar cercando, cerrando caminos de acceso y limpiandotodo lo posible las tierras en cuestión.
Hemos preguntado otra vez, por qué no han tomado acción con nuestra petición de un controlador de perros. Loreto ha estado discutiendo con la policía sobre el problema. Nos han enseñado un registro de la policía, quienes el 14-18, 27-31 de enero y 2 de febrero estuvieron en plena operación. No pudieron pillar a los perros en acción; se aproximaron a los dueños para comentarles las leyes locales con respecto a los perros. Este es el primer paso antes de empezar a repartir multas. Muchas zonas de Gran Alacant fueron el objetivo durante esos días y seguirán siendolo. Expresamos otra vez la preocupación de muchos residentes de Gran Alacant

in La Marina Little Thomas is about 9 weeks old and has had his 1st set of vaccinations. He was found in the engine compartment of a car, luckily his cries were heard before the engine was started. Thomas is very playful and loves a cuddle
This emaciated Cocker Spaniel cross has Leishmania and Erlichia. He also has chronic anaemia. Blood tests also revealed that his liver and kidneys are in and so we have started his treatment. Despite feeling very ill and weak his tail always wags when he is with people, he is approx 18 months. We took him to meet volunteers and customers at the K9 charity shop and he became an instant star and won everybody's heart. Can you sponsor him to help pay towards his expensive treatment? Please call Brenda on 966 796 436. Freddy was a loyal pet to his owner. They asked a friend to care for him while they went away for a short period. They never returned. He is a dog that needs to be with people and he is not happy in kennels. Freddy is 8 years and it will be tragic if we must keep him there for a long period.
Shana was first seen running around the streets of an urbanization, at the time she was just three months old. Shana is a beautiful chocolate coloured Labrador, she has been with us a few months and now her true colour and personality is blossoming. Shana is very intelligent, she is good with other dogs and in her previous foster home she was with cats. She loved the cats and they loved her. She is now approx 10 months and although a little lively with some training she will be a very obedient dog.

¿Qué está pasando con el nuevo mercadillo? Ya se está en marcha con el papeleo. Este proyecto está siendo pagado por el Gobierno de Valencia. Los planes han estado yendo y viniendo entre Gobierno y el Ayuntamiento, para llegar a un acuerdo. Ahora que se ha llegado a un acuerdo, están entrando las propuestas de las diferentes compañías para llevar a cabo el trabajo. Valencia decidirá quién llevará el proyecto, todo con mucho palabrerío. Estos largos procesos son necesarios para llegar al resultado final.
¿Cuáles son las obras que se está llevando a cabo en la parada de autobuses enfrente del Lidl? Hubo un problema con el muro, el cual ya está arreglado. Nada más que eso.
Nos siguen preguntando, ¿cuándo habrá una comisaría en nuestras urbanizaciones? Como hemos dicho anteriormente, la policía raramente usaba la comisaría, pero se ha decidido poner una unidad móvil cerca de la parada de taxis, enfrente del Ayuntamiento, así tendrán una base fija. ¿Por qué no han puesto la fuente en la rotonda de la entrada a Gran Alacant? Hay aún esperanza para que nuestro polideportivo sea abierto a principios de primavera. No va ha haber una apertura oficial ya que es ley que no pueden hacer inauguraciones 2 meses antes de las elecciones. Las instalaciones serán de lo mejor. Podrás inscribirte para cualquiera de las actividades: football, tenis y muchas más. Los niños de la escuela de GA podrán usar el polideportivo para sus actividades extraescolares.

Er is een wet die zegt dat er geen openings cermonie kaan plaats vinden ,2 maanden voor of na de de komende verkiezingen. De kinderen op de school GA kunnen ook om hun school activiteiten uit naar deze nieuwe locatie. De massale Santa Pola marathon vond plaats eind januari, 1 dag voordat we gingen drukken. I took part in the Abel Anton 10k in October, and the Santa Pola Half Marathon on 23rd January. These events were part of my training for the London Marathon on 17th April, which I will be taking part in on behalf of Clic Sargent, the Chidren's Cancer Charity. I am also running in memory of my partner Alan, who died of cancer in October 2008, and also my Father and Brother. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
There was a chap on the telly a while ago thundering on that unless we stop driving cars and booking Ryanair flights, we are all doomed. If we believe these so-called experts, in a few years time we will all be roasting in January and carbonised come summer on the Costa Blanca. Oh how we laughed at that back in the UK in December as we dug our cars out of the snowdrifts. The doomsayers wail that wildlife will go to pot, with strange species appearing here there and everywhere they shouldn’t be (anyone seen a giraffe in the Clot recently?), as if wildlife populations never change unless affected by climate change windbags. Of course bird and animal populations can change without any human intervention, and to illustrate this, here’s one bird which you can see in the Clot very easily, the Collared Dove. Now if you could climb into your Tardis and travel back 60 years or so, you wouldn’t see a single Collared Dove either here, or in Britain, or indeed anywhere in mainland Europe. They were Asiatic birds, mostly in India and thereabouts, but then something changed. We don’t know why – climate change hadn’t been invented, mad scientists weren’t fiddling with DNA and there weren’t enough nuclear tests going on to give us all two heads – but suddenly the world’s population of Collared Doves underwent a dramatic increase and they began to spread into Europe with startling speed. The first recorded nesting birds in Britain were in 1955; they caused considerable excitement at the time but now hardly anyone gives them a second
glance as they are so common. It’s a similar situation in Spain, where they first arrived in 1974, and now there are up to 50,000 pairs in the country with their slightly irritating “coo-COO-coo” call which can be heard just about everywhere. The Spanish call them Tórtola Turca, or Turkish Dove as they had a foothold in Turkey just before the time of their great expansion westwards. The closely-related Turtle Dove, which is a browner bird and which only lives here in the summer months, is the only possible confusion species, but they are more nervous birds and only seen with difficulty, which is probably due to the fact that they have been on the wrong end of hunter’s gun sights for many years as a food resource; the Collared Dove has yet to appear in a piquant sauce at your local restaurant. The chap in my photograph is neither landing nor taking off – he’s either having a stretch of his wings, or auditioning for an underarm deodorant advert. See you next month.
