We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and “What to see” for this month ... Fortress-Castle. Also from the 23rd to 27th a Medieval Market will be held there.

Hi everybody, To start, I would like to tell you that the Santa Pola Town Hall Tourism Department organizes an English guide to the salt museum, the Municipal Aquarium and the fish auction on the 2nd of March, previous booking is required at the Tourist Info offices.

Moors and Christian parades usually held every year in March in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) have been posponed due to Holy Week and San Jose fiestas.

This year Holy Week takes place in March so from the 20th which is Palm Sunday to the 27th you will be able to attend all parades that take place in Santa Pola or in the surrounding towns. The most beautiful the Palm Sunday procession is held in Elche. In fact it is declared of International Tourism Interest. If you can’t come to see every procession that is held in Santa Pola , I recommend you to come and enjoy the biggest that takes place on Friday the 25th in the

In Valencia one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” takes place. The programme is long but there are parades, main days are 15th to the 19th which include Floral offerings - this event is very emotive with spectacular fireworks, dancing, music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers). If you do not feel like going to Valencia you can always enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. This is all this month.

Bye-bye my friends ... until next month.

Hello everyone, Lots of events are taking place this month in Santa Pola and the surrounding areas. There are parades during holy week which are worth a visit. lmprovements are also well underway now to Gran Alacants overpass from the N332; the construction of the revamped LIDL is nearing completion and actually looks quite pleasing on the eye for a supermarket. In Santa Pola we have the grand re-opening of the Leprachaun bar as you can see this months edition has a St Patrick’s day feel about it we hope it puts you all in good spirits for celebrating. Our new website is very near completion so watch this space. Have a good month, Lou & Ged Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 17

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, and answers to your questions from Councillor of Citizen Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: ROUNDABOUTS Hi Lou & Ged! Firstly, all the best with your new venture in 2016! It's a great magazine enjoyed by so many people... When my husband & I bought our property here in 2003, I well remember how impressed we both were (and still are) with the Spanish roads and the roundabouts/ rotundas, from the ones on the N332 near to Terra Mitica and beyond to the stunning one in Santa Pola by MacDonalds - who wouldn't be impressed by the lovely waterfalls? Also the creativity of the 'azul' one by 'El Palmerel'! And when you think of the ones here in Gran Alacant, well, there is the one next to Novamar and the school - despite being on a hill, it's such an aesthetically -pleasing work of art in my opinion. As for the one up by the Oficina de Correo, there have been numerous occasions when coming from Sueno Azul towards the Post Office at sunset that is almost impossible to capture in a photo! Beautiful indeed! However, if I have one major gripe then it would be that when you come on to the roundabout from Avda Mediterraneo with the intention of turning right on to Avda Escandinavia, it is such an unnatural manoeuvre and sharp turn to do so! I'd like to make a suggestion - as the future of the present Post Office is in question and as there is currently work being done in that area

4

re the laying of pipework that surely this is a perfect opportunity to improve the situation... This brings me to the final roundabout at the entrance to Gran Alacant - of course this final roundabout happens to be the first roundabout to be built in GA! Again, I feel that something more could be added to this mature roundabout to enhance its aesthetics on entrance to GA. However, the fact that there are two roads so close together, ie. The entry road from Santa Pola and the entry road in front of Consum & Lidl, is no longer acceptable in my opinion because of the increase in traffic! (I dread to think what it must be like during the busy summer months!!) Again, I can see an opportunity here with the building of the new Lidl - I'd propose that the entry road in front of Consum be closed altogether to traffic and that the side entrance to Consum on Avda Finlandia be used for one way access to not only Consum but onwards through to Lidl from where traffic could safely exit... I'd appreciate if you'd pass on my thoughts and views to the local councillor. Also, it would be interesting to hear the thoughts of other interested parties? Muchas Gracias! Kind Regards Helen

traffic proposal in order to decide if it is possible to conduct. However, the current government team is working in GA in order to achieve the construction of the second public school (which is already accepted by Generalitat and the works will start by second half of 2017) and the improvement of the ambulatory, rather than the aesthetic of roundabouts. Nevertheless, I’m going to report about these observations so as, if possible, some embellishment works can be done. Q:CAMPERVAN PARKING ON CARABASSI BEACH

You comment in the January edition about the caravan parking being stopped in the car park at the Arenales end of the coast road. I share your view on this but all that has happened is that the caravans have moved further along the coast road and are now parking mainly on Elche land to the left of the ermita/shrine

Town Hall Answer: We are going to study your

looking towards the sea and, to a lesser extent on the Santa Pola land to the right of the ermita/shrine. I'm attaching a photograph taken from our garden last weekend to illustrate this. Caravans are no more entitled to park here than in the previous car park. There are notices all along the coast road clearly saying that camping is not permitted. There are no facilities for these caravans to dispose of their waste (all types including toilet) and the fact that they are there is both unhygienic and spoils the area for other, more considerate, users. We denounced the practice to Arenales policia local two weeks ago but no action has been taken. I then wrote last week to both Elche and Santa Pola Ayunatamientos but, to date, nothing has happened. The person I wrote to is Sr.M.Lopez. Nobody seems to want to take responsibility for enforcing the rules of the coast road and whoever took the action to bar the caravans from the previous location - presumably Elche Ayuntamiento - seems to have washed their hands of the problem.

More about campervans ... How short sighted some people are, I agree that a certain minority of campers are illegally dumping their toilet waste & grey water & give campers a bad name . But rather than stop these tourists from supporting the local shops, restaurants & supermarkets, wouldn't is be more sensible as in La Marina to provide & charge for the facilities to make some cash & keep everyone happy. Would they stop people flying to Spain or driving to Spain to stop tourism? No, they would lose a lot of cash. So why are people so negative, after all the people touring in their motor-home are usually pensioners who have the time & don't hold wild parties & disturb us here in G/A. Regards, Bill Magazine Answer: Thank you for your feed back Bill. Yes it would be sensible to charge a fee. This car park is a bit awkward as Elche own the space, but they are using Santa Polas water. There is a purpose built camper-van park at the industrial site, but of course it is not as nice as this car park.

Anything that you can do to put pressure on the appropriate authorities would be appreciated. Regards, Robert

Do readers think that camper-van owners should have free parking, free water, and free waste facilities?

Town Hall Answer: Related to this issue, our first authority, Yolanda Seva, was going to meet the mayor of Elche, in order to discuss this matter, among many others that relate to both towns. However, as you surely know, at the moment the political situation in Elche is a little bit uncertain, due to the broken government pact. Despite this, as quick as possible, we are going to have this appointment so as this hot issue can be resolved.

Q: CATERPILLARS I live in Altomar 2, just a bit above the marketplace, opposite a small pine wood in Clle.Monte de Santa Pola, which also borders the market place. Many of the trees here contain the nests of the Processionally Caterpillars, which could open at any time now, unleashing thousands of these toxic creatures to eat the remaining foliage and cause a menace on the pavements. Children walk up and down the road to and from the school buses

and the caterpillars are a danger here. The pine trees here are important to keep alive - they have already been nearly destroyed, some have been. This small wood forms a ‘green lung’ in an area which has been very built up, and a haven for many species of birds. It cools the air in summer and creates a windbreak in winter. The trees need to be conserved for the whole community - but they cannot cope with drought AND the caterpillars ! The Council can actually do something about these some years they have come and cut the nests down from the trees and bagged them and more recently, treated by injecting the trees to make them unsavoury to the beasts; but this year I haven’t noticed any work being done. Many thanks. Yours truly, Rose Town Hall Answer: Related to this matter, the municipal technique services has informed us that prevention actions have been taken, such as bacillus application in urban areas (so as caterpillars colonies won’t be able to grow up), and corrective actions, such as cutting the caterpillars’ bags (which grow up in areas as Mrs. Jackson describes). Furthermore, depending on the area in which caterpillars grow up, Consellería must act, seeking for the well-being of vegetal species, and we have requested this entity to take the actions that are needed in order to keep our environment safe.

Q: SCHOOL CAR PARK I have 3 questions to ask, but firstly I would like to congratulate Santa Pola council for the brilliant job done to the extension to the school. First: Unfortunately that cannot be said about the Car Park. It is useful and necessary in the mornings and afternoons, but can you tell us when the entrance will be finished properly, as at the moment it is dangerous, the temporary concrete blocks which stick out into the road are a magnet for children to play on after school and weekends. Cars are also hitting them. Second: The disgusting and un healthy habit has come back to the area, dog walkers are using the car park as a meeting place to chat and let their dogs run free to do their business all over the car park. The town hall in Benejuzar are looking at fines and waste bins, up to date there appears to be no schemes in this area, could it be looked at? Third: also when the extension to the school was announced it was said that there would be landscaping done, but to date not a plant, tree or shrub is visible anywhere in the car park, or the extension part of the school. The rest of GA seems to have plenty of planting, but this part of Monte y Mar seems to have missed out. Yours Lyn and Don Lucas residents opposite the car park. Town Hall Answer: First: It is true that the situation of car park at the school in Gran Alacant can be dangerous by the time children are going in or out the school. That is why, while urbanistic options are being studied in order to solve this, much police presence are destined to this building at this time. We will keep you in touch

6

about our progresses related to this problem. Second: About that, our Infrastructure Councillor is working at searching for new and environmentally responsible features in order to solve the dogs and other animals depositions all over our town. At the moment, if any neighbour feels upset about this issue, we recommend to report them to the police authority, so as the proper actions can be taken. Third: The landscaping is a project to be done when all the works that a new school and the rehabilitation of the built one are done. So we ask for people’s patience, this is a slow race, but we are going in the right direction. What is NOT HAPPENING on Gran Alacant?

As a resident on Gran Alacant I was dismayed to see on Calle Noruega all the long grass amongst the stones and in the park area, what a shame, in fact looking around Gran Alacant it does not seem as tidy as it used to. I've also noticed sign posts pointing the wrong way, that's ok for people who know where they are going but, for any visitors here for the first time it will be very confusing. I know in the past when there was a Councillor on Gran Alacant she was always

looking out for problems, also anyone could make an appointment to see her. From what I have found out we no longer have a Councillor here so any problems have to be taken to Santa Pola town hall, Who are GA residents contacting with their problems. Perhaps our readers can tell us who and where?? Magazine Answer: Once we mentioned the above to the Town Hall, their workers were soon on the case sorting it all out. Press release to us Friday January 29, 2016 Very good news which comes to all residents of Santa Pola, especially for residents in Gran Alacant, as the Ministry of Education has published the resolution regarding the construction of new schools in Valencia. Loli Thomas, Councillor for Education, recalled the historical demand for a second school for this district. Thomas wanted to make a small schedule from the transfer of land for a school "that was not public, but agreed. A Center for Social Initiative (CIS). Having regard to the needs of the population, "the government team considered that what was needed was a school". Last July 31 a letter was sent to the, "Ministry to notify the list of educational deficiencies that we had on the urbanisation. Fundamentally, the construction of the second school on Gran Alacant and reconstruction of Hispanidad. Based on this data, a meeting with the

regional secretary of Education, "plus a round of meetings with Educational Planning and Educational Infrastructures". On December 11, he returned to the Consistory to require that he commanded the list of needs "specifically from another department of Ministry, which on 17 December, the report came out." Previously, the talks had yielded encouraging news that our school was a priority. Priorities A new construction and adaptations of schools and colleges, the start of works is estimated for the first half of 2017. That is, between January and June next year." The mayor stressed that "we wished the date to come forward, but we must take into account the priorities and the budget that is available." Anyway, it is great news, "especially when we have been able to get to this in just six months." As for the new center, Department wants to have "a maximum of three lines that are in place, that is, three classrooms per course. A capacity of about 400-450 students. The institute is to be located in the municipal plot adjoining Vicenta Russian, which also has outstanding performances. The new school, said Loli Thomas, "would be located up the hill, because it is not convenient for two primary schools to be located together, especially when there are many children who have to travel daily on Gran Alacant”. Again, he will go to Valencia "to demand what the previous government team did and that we, in this short period, we have achieved based concern and insistence. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx By the time you read this, work will finally have got underway on the road bridge on and off Gran Alacant. Work should take around 3 months and be careful, as there will be road diversions onto the N332.

MITJA MARATON SANTA POLA, JANUARY 2016 (Santa Pola Half Marathon- 21km) as told by participant Geoffrey Young The first thing you notice on race day is build up of traffic heading towards Santa Pola from every direction, as tens of thousands of runners and supporters, from all over the country, make their way to what must be, one of the best running events in Spain. The whole of Santa Pola is taken over with a carnival atmosphere and a great feeling of camaraderie. The place just positively buzzes. It all started in 1990 with a field of 324 athletes and has grown steadily since then with over 9000 athletes now participating. This year’s winner was Kenyan Morris Munene Gachaga who finished in a time of 1hr, 01mins, 02secs. The female category was won by Kenyan Polline Wanjiku in a time of 1hr, 10mins, 25secs. There is an amazing amount of organisation behind the hosting of this event with a dedicated team which brings this to fruition ever year. The planning starts early in the year, and one of the

22

main characters involved in developing the event over the years is Jose Manuel Blasco, from the Tourism Information Counter in Santa Pola. He is one of the nicest, most genuine people I know, and his enthusiasm for the event and all things Santa Pola is legendary. I came across Jose at the Sports village on the weekend of the Run, and as always he showered me with compliments and goodwill.

Singapore), but the Santa Pola event is the best ever and I am proud to be involved in such a great event.

Start line

Geoff on start line

Geoff and Jose

I participated in my first Santa Pola half marathon back in 2010 and was immediately hooked. The course, the organisation, the entry fee, the “all inclusive” atmosphere, are excellent. Santa Pola certainly pulls out all the stops for the 3rd Sunday of January. I have probably participated in 30 or so half marathons over the years (I ran the first Great North Run (GNR) in 1981 and recently participated in the Penang Bridge Half Marathon (Malaysia) and the Standard Chartered Half Marathon in

The day starts with a drive into Santa Pola, parking the car, and then joining the crowds, as they meander through the streets towards the harbour front or the Glorieta. Cafes and restaurants are thronged with runners and spectators, there is hubbub of excited chatter, and a feeling of anticipation in the air. The race starts opposite the Miramar Restaurant, where 9000 athletes are herded into the start enclosure, the elite athletes at the front to allow them a free run. From the rear of the start line it can take 3-4 minutes to cross the official start line. And then you are off. 21km in-front of you. The crowds of spectators line the route cheering the runners every step of the way. The route

heads south to Playa Lisa, before turning back towards the harbour and onto Santa Pola East, before turning round and heading back through Varadero into the town and back out to Playa Lisa, before turning back again for the last 3-4km to the finish line opposite the Miramar Restaurant. Music is ever present with probably 8 bands playing along the route, not to mention the percussive bands and the piped music coming from the bars and restaurants. The irony wasn’t lost on me when I reached the halfway point at the anchor at La Cadena in Santa Pola East, the band was playing “I Will Survive”. Ha ha. I had already heard Spencer Davis, “Keep on Running”. It is worth mentioning, at this point in the race , the eventual winners had finished. At 11km there was a drinks station, so a quick drink, head up, and battle on to the end. After crossing the finish line, you are again herded into the finishing enclosure, where you can refuel, rehydrate and stretch out with your fellow competitors. Cake, nutri-bars, soft drinks, fruit, even beer is available, free at the end, accompanied with plenty of back slapping and hand shakes with complete strangers. What a great way to end a race.

Geoff at race finish The days of running “good” times are now behind me. My motivation is to participate and complete the half marathon, especially one that takes place on the third Sunday of January as I have to keep focused over the winter months to keep fit and not overindulge during the festive period during which you have to contend with well meant advice from friends, family and strangers, along the lines of “I hung up my running shoes years ago what is someone of your age doing running that far?”. These prove to be great motivators as you set yourself goals to prove you can still “do it”. It would be untrue to say I enjoyed the run on the day. A lifetime of physical activity brings with it worn out bits of body which hurt when you run, but without doubt, at the end I feel satisfied and, overwhelmed with a sense of achievement. January 2017 is already in the diary, but before then is the small matter of the Santa Pola 10km race on Saturday 4th June.

If 21km is too far for you, this is a lovely little run around Santa Pola. Whether you are thinking of running the 21km or the 10km, go to see Jose Manuel Blasco and he will give you the contact details. If running is not your thing, come to Santa Pola on race day and enjoy the atmosphere and give us runners a cheer. It will be a fantastic day out! Well done Linda Davies, who finished 2nd in her age group (65 lady).

“I took part in the Santa Pola half marathon this year and what an amazing event it was. Having also taken part 2 years ago with some friends, I found the atmosphere even better this time around. I trained hard for this event and came over especially to take part. I was very pleased to come second in my age group (65 lady) and I was presented with an enormous cup! Spending several hours in the Spa in Gran Alacant on the Monday and I wasn’t even sore or achy after that . I’m looking forward to next year”.

T

eeth whitening is an effective way to improve the appearance of your teeth. It cannot make a complete colour change but should markedly lighten your existing shade. All teeth are different and, just like hair colour, vary from person to person. You may want to improve the natural colour of your teeth but it is just as likely that teeth have become darker with age or the effect of some food & drink such as tea, coffee & red wine and smoking. Before starting any whitening process it is essential to remove all traces of plaque, calculus and surface stains with a professional scale & polish. There are several whitening processes available however many are ineffective and some can be harmful. Be very wary of using any product not supplied by a dental professional. Professional bleaching will involve making a small rubber tray to cover the crowns of the teeth. The bleaching gel is put into the tray and applied to the

teeth. The active ingredient (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) breaks down, releasing oxygen onto the enamel, lightening the tooth. The process takes about an hour and needs to be repeated daily for around ten days. For this reason it is usually carried out by the patient in their home at a convenient time. This gradual process (as opposed to “power bleaching in one session) makes any side effects such as sore gums and sensitive teeth far less likely. The effects of whitening are thought to last for up to 3 years, however you will be able to keep your rubber trays for future use and reapplying in the future should be far less costly. Our first Cyclo-Cycling Field Trip from Santa Pola to Tabarca has been spectacular. The clear bright sunny day was absolutely perfect for our cycling trip. The team consisted of German & Spanish riders. Some already experienced cyclist, but most have not tried the electric bike which added to the level of excitement. The trip started at 10:00am at Bras del Port in Santa Pola, we passed through Natural Park of Salinas with Cabo being the next target. We carefully loaded our bikes on a boat at Playa de Levante and moved to the calm atmosphere of Tabarca - the flat island. We arrived back in Santa Pola port at the end of a great day. Waiting to repeat this route on 20th and 27th of March.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

I

f it looks like a duck and floats like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck – and the one species that everyone knows (or should do if they have the slightest interest in birds) is the Mallard . You know it, it's the one which has the iridescent green head on the male and the all-brown female which you probably fed breadcrumbs to when you were little. You will of course see Mallards on the pool at the Clot, but you are also likely to see a different type of duck which is altogether more spectacular. This is the Red-crested Pochard, and as you will see from my photo it is quite unmistakeable. Here I have been fortunate enough to get both the male and female birds into one shot, and now is the best time of the year to see them when they have paired up and are getting ready to begin their breeding season. The males will be in their finest plumage and quite appropriately the Spanish name for them is Pato Colorado, or Colourful Duck. The females are as you can see much duller, but do have that distinctive “lipstick” effect on their beaks to help identify them when seen in isolation. We have been fortunate over the past few years that improved reserve management in the Clot has led to a reliable water level at the main pool, and over that time we

70

have had at least two seasons when Redcrested Pochards have successfully bred there; last year there were two successful broods and at least one the year before that. At the start of this year a few pairs were back, and there is no reason why this summer should not see more families in place. The nest will be well-hidden in one of the reedbeds, and one of the things that attracts the Red-crested Pochard to our local pool is the presence of the Blackwinged Stilts, which are one of the bird world's best early-warning systems. It has been shown that the ducklings have a better survival rate when the noisy Stilts are on hand to provide warning that a predator is about. This bird has a wide range, from the UK across Europe and Asia as far as China, but we are fortunate in Spain that 80% of the European population of this bird breeds here. Many people seem to think that ducks eat fish, but like most other duck species the Red-crested Pochard eats mostly vegetable matter which they will dive for rather than up-ending themselves like the Mallards do. You can see more photos of wildlife in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month

YOUR PENSION FUND, SHOULD YOU DE-RISK OR NOT? 5 STEPS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

going for drawdown, it's worth keeping an eye on annuity rates as they might improve again if interest rates go up.

ONE Ask your pension advisor when they plan to start de-risking your savings under any automatic lifestyle system. Normally this is 10 years before you retire, but it'll be useful to have a deadline for whether to continue with or halt the process. Even if your pension advisor has already started de-risking your savings, you can still switch back into riskier stock investments with the chance of better returns. And if you have delayed de-risking, you can always start it later.

FOUR If you let your pension advisor derisk your pension fund don’t be afraid to ask questions about the risks, costs/fees and rational behind his investment decisions

TWO How much money you have put by for retirement should influence your thinking on whether it is more sensible to buy an annuity or to stay invested and gradually draw down from your savings. Those with less may be better off with an annuity but those with more generally have further options about what you should do with different-sized pension pots. THREE Keep an open mind about what you are doing. If you start de-risking, be prepared to slow or abandon the process if you decide to go for drawdown instead. And even if you think you are definitely

78

FIVE The brutal truth is pension freedom sounds great, but it also means more decisions will be left up to you in future. A free official service is available to offer general guidance, but it won't give personalised advice. It certainly won't tell you what funds to put your money in, whether you are de-risking or not. Since sound advice around funding your retirement is so important, you should take professional qualified advice to ensure that your finances on track prior to retirement and during retirement to maintain the required lifestyle for you and you loved ones.
