We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: POST OFFICE Does the Town Hall have any news on any proposed move for the GA Post Office, to bigger and more accessible premises? Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this matter, we have to say that, sadly, there is not not any news about moving the GA Post Office, due to the lack of municipal land to which the Post Office could be moved to. However, the Town Hall has a fluid relationship with the Post Office Management, so this goal can be achieved as soon as possible in order to give a better service to all the people who live in GA. Q: DUATHLON Santa Pola, after 21 years,it is left without its duathlon due to the removal of the financial support from the city hall. A shame!!!! As it took many years to build up all of the big sport events, to attract people into the area. Why? Town Hall Answer: First of all, it is not true that the Town Hall has removed the financial support from the Athletic Club. The Athletic Club has decided, unilaterally and according to just economic criteria, not to hold the duathlon. The Sport Councillor, Loli Tomรกs, wants to make clear that the Town Hall has not financially supported any club or sports association for the moment, given that the annual budgets are not approved yet. However, the duathlon was a loss sporting event for the Club, who was unable to obtain financial support through private sponsors. Finally, the Town Hall does have the will to hold the competition, and we are working to make it happen.
the competition, we mean that, despite the refusal of the club and the letter which have been spread in social networks, the Sport Councillor has met with the Club with the aim that the duathlon will be performed. We hope we have been able to clarify your doubts, and if you need any further clarification, please contact us. Q: WOULD THE TOWN HALL LIKE TO LET OUR READERS KNOW OF ANY GOOD NEWS? Town Hall Answer: Of course we want let the people who live in GA know all the news about the municipal Government. In first place, as many of you surely know already, the Palmeral Auditorium has been conditioned scrupulously following security measures established in current regulations, with the aim of preserving the security of all those who wish to see and participate in the events planned for the Moros y Cristianos and Local Festivities. In addition, during the summer we have received a large number of tourists, both national and international, being the second municipality in the province in terms of numbers of seasonal tourism. This has led to a drop in the number of people out of work unprecedented since 2009, before the economic crisis. Therefore, the Corporation is very proud of his work as head of the Agency of Local Development and the Bureau of Tourism of the City of Santa Pola.
Furthermore, we want to make clear that when we say we are still working to hold

HOTEL IN ARENALES: Numerous protesters were outside the hotel in Los Arenales, where renovation has come to a standstill. People want the work to continue after it has been stopped due to complaints concerning the rebuilding regulations being broken.
A pensioner friend had to under go a kidney removal. Went into Elche hospital 12 noon on the Wednesday. Operated on during the afternoon. In recovery in the evening. The next day, Thursday, they had him walking around the ward. The next morning Friday he came home. What service!!! It was so hot in July and August that the resident beggar at Mercadona melted away in the heat!!!! The picture shows all that was left of him!
OTHER NEWS:
Bailey buses seem to encounter many cars parking in their stopping areas. Notice it particularly at Carabassi. Could the police be more prevalent near these stops at the times on the timetable? Am sure a few fines would suffice.
In last months magazine we wondered why Special events on Gran Alacant were not being set up on the new market site, to give better access for those who require space at the Gran Alacant clinic. We are pleased to report that this indeed did happen for the Fiestas that took place last month on Gran Alacant. Celebrations of the district of Gran Alacant were held in July. “They went very well, starting with the change of location. People were very happy because there was much more space, for more chairs, and a bigger stage ... all better. " Most importantly, with the change of location, "medical office users and the Library were able to park normally." for the very first time. Cockroaches. Living here as we do, every year we see the new paint markings on the manhole covers to show that they have been round spraying for the little blighters. So rest assured, someone is always on their case. We have before, highlighted the wonderful healthcare provided here in Spain. Had to just mention another example.

Hello Everyone, We hope you had a good August. All I can say is - what a month! Things really seemed to pick up last month. You might have seen me out and about with the camera during the month capturing some great photos of tourists and locals enjoying themselves and they certainly were! You can see some of the pics inside the magazine. The entertainment provided for them was first class all over Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. There were some great comments as well, one family told me it was their best ever holiday in fifteen years of holidaying here, also friends of mine who come here once a year have booked to return in October for a second holiday already so we must be getting something right in Gran Alacant dare I say! It seems to have buzz about it at the moment and please be aware I will be about during September looking for more pics for the magazine so if you want to be in you need to be out and about because Lou and I will. Have a great month, Ged and Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her?
RESCUE CENTRE REELING AFTER DEATH OF HORSE LINKED TO RARE DISEASE
deteriorate and was rushed to the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente on July 22. There, veterinarians discovered a mysterious lung infection. Cultures were taken but Lily died on August 10 before the results could be known.
A seriously ill horse that died in Alicante this month after suffering a baffling series of injuries and illnesses could have been suffering a rare disease never before seen in Spain. Veterinarians at the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente, who treated Lily, have preserved the stones in formaldehyde to be sent to the University of Córdoba when it reopens in September for further specialist analysis. "We are obviously devastated to lose this beautiful young member of our rescue centre family, particularly after the loss of her mother only two years ago,” said Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding. “But we hope that Lily's death will help to bridge some of the knowledge gaps in equine medicine, and learnings from Lily will one day help other horses." Lily first fell ill in early July, after suffering a fractured neck overnight in her stable – foul play could not be ruled out, as the injury came as the rescue centre suffered a string of break-ins. Her condition continued to worsen over coming weeks, and Lily was diagnosed with tick fever and then an infection called myonecrosis in her neck muscles caused by the tick fever treatment injections. Despite treatment, she continued to
12
Sue said.
“This again highlights that while many of our rescued horses seem to be fine from the outside, they have been exposed to all sorts of unknown circumstances and situations that often leave a devastating mark on the inside. Sometimes it takes years for these effects to become known,”
Lily was born at the rescue centre in April 2014 to a skeletal mare named Liberty, one of 14 horses rescued from horrendous conditions at Callosa de Segura just one month earlier. The horses’ former owner was this year criminally convicted of animal abuse over the case. Sue said Lily’s death had put the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre under severe financial strain. While veterinarians have recognised the centre’s charity status and heavily discounted their bill, Lily’s treatment costs still came to €2650 – a huge sum for a centre that relies entirely on donations to survive. “We’d be truly grateful for any donations to help cover these large veterinary bills, as our seven charity stores are very slow during the August holidays and Rod and I are already dipping into our own dwindling savings just to cover the daily feeding costs of our 96 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys.” Secure online donations can be made here: easyhorsecare.net/donate/one-off-donation The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month.

Chatter COMMUNITY
Last month, I spoke briefly, about the community that makes up Gran Alacant. For me as a relative novice here, commonality is the most important aspect, of why I am staying! When moving abroad, in fact, when moving anywhere different, acceptance by those you intend to live in close proximity with, is important. I had no idea what to expect, moving to an urbanization, putting a pin in a map, leaving Britain’s pastures for Spain’s idyllic charm and welcoming hospitality. It didn’t take long to realise, conjecture proved to be very different to palpability! Almost immediately, from day one, I was acknowledged as part of a fantastic neighbourhood, very different to that, I have lived in before. Urbanizations had a bad reputation, from Britain at least. The problem of ‘land grab’, especially in this region was high on people’s minds. Those thinking about moving to Spain and those who already had property here, were understandably nervous. Before taking the plunge and moving to Gran Alacant, I still remained sceptical about the benefits of living in such a community development. Can all these different people, from different backgrounds, with different agenda’s actually get on in practice? So far I have been pleasantly surprised. Yes Gran Alacant is a diverse place, full of colour and individuality, from all over the globe, but it is first a location to live. People have homes here, take pride in their environment, which makes for an altogether better, uplifting and generous experience!
30
The tourists are arriving, both home owners and others who stay for a brief few weeks a year. I have met many new faces this month, all approachable, everyone responsive and without exception, wanting to introduce themselves. This reminds me of a time when I was young, growing up in 1970s Britain. It feels right, secure and convivial, just how things should be. There is an air of polite introduction and curious interest from the people who inhabit Gran Alacant. The feeling of a bygone era, the feeling of acceptance, the feeling of belonging! Last week I was introduced to an older couple, who had not visited Gran Alacant for a while, about eight years ago to be exact. They had decided to come back, after they cancelled their holiday to Turkey, amidst all the trouble on the periphery of Europe. They were amazed at just how much the area had changed, but happy that the small, village like atmosphere still remained the life force of this popular destination. When I walk around the urbs that make up this community, I am struck by the amount of residents who say hello, beep their car horns or just wave. This is a happy place, because people, resident or not, want to be here, enjoy the amenities on their doorstep and feel at home, around like minded individuals. They are not afraid to say so neither. People are very content to sit in a square and talk about the reasons, that brought them to this little place on The Costa Blanca. They are proud of Gran Alacant, the life they have here and the friends they have made, as they should be. The people who live here have worked hard to turn this into a place, they can call home. The trouble in Europe and the Middle East

are strong on peoples minds. Dreadful happenings in France and Germany and the continued march of ISIS, are not far from peoples thoughts. Like the couple I met earlier, I also met a delightful young married family, down on the beach at Carabassi, all here on holiday, for the first time. Somewhere safe, they have brought their children, to play and relax for a few well earned days break, Child friendly, family orientated, a World away from the daily drudge of life back home. I am a talker and conversationalist, and regularly go up to people, chatting away about Spain. I want to hear what people like you are talking about, what is important to you? living in Gran Alacant. Why you are here? And just what you want me to discuss in this monthly column? Nearly everyone has a view about something. Of course there is turbulence and anxiety in Europe, right on our door step and people here are, if not scared, at least aware of what is happening in the World. Even away on holiday, you can not escape the news bulletins, the extra airport security and the calls for action, from people who sit back in horror observing, dreadful atrocities, on their television screens. No area can be safe from the spectre of terrorism. Only today I read an article, where ISIS had warned of attacks against tourists in Spain, yes in our own back yard, but should we allow this threat to deter us from our daily activities? No of course we shouldn’t. Carrying on, standing together as a community and remaining vigilant and aware, eyes wide open and feet firmly on the ground are the common sense approach to such words of hate! Talking to Anita and Paul at the beach, about Gran Alacant, I am struck by a
single word that keeps popping up, again and again, Community. Even as visitors, this young family are well aware of the neighbourhood that forms the life blood of GA. They have only been here for a few short days, but already have been made to feel welcome, by everyone they meet. Not only the bar and restaurant owners, but also the residents, those that live here everyday of their lives and those holiday makers, like themselves, out enjoying a vacation in the sun. Forming friendships and meeting new and interesting people is a pastime we all do on holiday. I myself have met numerous wonderful characters and personalities over many years, holidaying in this place or that. Some of whom, I still remain in contact with, even after ten or so years. Psychologically people are important to our needs as human beings; with such an open and welcoming group of people, like the aforementioned in Gran Alacant, you can always ensure that as visitors or residents, new or established, staying with family or briefly passing through, you can always be sure that you receive the best Gran Alacant offers. With so much trouble, violence and tribulation, all over the World, this region does accord the comparative safety, of a destination, that people can trust, affording credence to a dream, that those who live here keep alive!
As a relative newbie myself, I observe outside the box. I can look into this community, with a degree of neutrality. I have only scratched the surface, talking to the great and good, that make up this place, but already I have engaged with a wealth of people, I could have only dreamed about in The UK. Different nationalities, personalities, all friendly, approachable and all part of Gran Alacant, this place, I call home!

Best wedding joke! At a wedding ceremony, the pastor asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace. The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful blonde woman carrying a child. She started walking toward the pastor slowly. Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride slapped the groom. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation. The pastor asked the woman, "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?" The blonde replied, “We can’t hear anything in the back.”

SANTA POLA LA MARINA
Mayka’s Kitchen
This month we are celebrating the Moors and Christians in Santa Pola, so our recipe is a typical dish of the area. Caldero y arroz a banda (Cauldron and rice a banda).
Check out our online step by step video tutorial on www.granalacantadvertiser.com
This dish consists of two parts: one is the fish and potato and then the type of rice called " a banda" (means separate)
Ingredients 2 ñoras (dry red pepper) 1/2 kg tomatoes 1 or 2 onions
4 medium potatoes 1/2 kg of whitebait
1kg of Red scorpionfish or Sea Mullet 350gr rice
4 or 5 garlic cloves
olive oil, salt ,safron fish stock Alioli
Caldero y arroz a banda
1. Fry the ñoras in a frypan with oil, remove and set aside on a plate. 2. Cut onion into large pieces fry in the same oil, add the tomatoes cut into four pieces and fry for few minutes. 3. In a separate saucepan bring 2 litres of water to boil. When the water is boiling, add the onion, tomatoes and the ñoras. Also add the whitebait. 4. While everythign is cooking, coat the scorpionfish or sea mullet in salt. 5. Blend the content of saucepan to make the broth, then strain the broth into another pot. Add the potatoes (cut into large chunks), the saffron and salt to season the broth. When the potatoes are almost cooked, wash the fish to remove the salt and add it to the pot. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Second part: In a paella pan for 4 people add the fish broth and when it is boiling add the rice (a handful of rice per person approximately). Bring the rice to boil and then reduce and cook for 20 minutes. Serve the fish and potatoes with alioli and the rice separate.
Enjoy! Que Aproveche! 66

September Events & Activities
The harvest party Festa Verema Faelo will be the 24th of September from 10h. to 14h. Each September “Bodegas Faelo” starts its harvest and as is becoming the custom in our house when we finish, like the grandfather Rafael did, we celebrate “La fiesta de la vendimia” or “Festa de la Verema”.
What is “La fiesta de la vendimia”? The harvest party (festaveremafaelo) is an “Open Day” where you can look and participate, pressing the grapes, like the first generation did more than 100 years ago even with the same tools.
7474
The “Festa de la verema” is a public event with free admission in where come people from all the province of Alicante, to see how we collect the grapes by hand and then how we press them with the feet, with the typical shoes called “alpargatas” dancing with the rhythm of a constant dance. People can board on the vessel where the grapes are trodden; the “afollaor” or “afonador” and participate in this “fiesta”, also you will see how we press the grapes in the centenary manual press where we extract all the colour from the grape. At the same time we will offer tasting of local products from the countryside of Elche and wine from “Bodegas Faelo” to recover after the pressing.

A wine must transmit the soul of its winery. Jaime Soto
What activities will we offer? “Bodegas Faelo” is a traditional winery but with a young spirit, this festaveremafaelo, we would like that young people, families and kids could participate of this day with us, like a big family…
For this we have prepared different activities: Open day; where you can visit our winery. • Traditional press with the feet. • Tasting of local products from the countryside of Elche + a glass of wine (white, rosé, red or sweet) 2.00€. • Game: grape-pressing of the moon of BodegasFaelo with gifts for the kids. • Live Music by the group Emdiv Djs playing songs from Spanish indie-pop groups. • Harvest 2.0 throught the social-networks and photo’s competition with direct presents. • Indie-pop Music area
Come alone, with friends or with your family. The 24th of September from 10:00 to 14:00. We’ll wait for you in the festavermafaelo!!! For further information please call: 655 85 68 98 or send an e-mail to: info@vinosladama.com Camino de los Coves, Ptda. Matola, Pol. 3, nº 18, 03296 Elche (Alicante)

THE TREMORS FOLLOWING THE BREXIT VOTE UK PENSION FUND DEFICITS JUMP TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL EVER RECORDED! The gap between assets and liabilities of UK defined benefit (DB) pension schemes widened still further last month, with deficits reaching the deepest level recorded as long-term bond yields declined further, according to data from the Pension Protection Fund (PPF). The UK pensions lifeboat released its latest PPF 7800 Index bulletin, which revealed that the aggregate deficit of the 5,945 schemes in the index has increased to an estimated £408.0bn (€477.8bn) at the end of July – the highest level recorded by the index – up from a £383.6bn deficit at the end of June. The average funding ratio of the schemes deteriorated to 77.4% at the end of July from 78% the month before. Total assets were £1,401bn at the end of July, while total liabilities were £1,808.9bn, and 5,020 schemes were in deficit and 925 in surplus. Noting that equity markets and Gilt yields were the main drivers of funding levels, the PPF said that, during July, when scheme liabilities had grown by 3.5%, conventional 15-year Gilt yields fell by 24 basis points,
while index-linked 15-year Gilt yields fell by 3bps. Andy Tunningley, BlackRock’s head of UK strategic clients, said the rise in equities last month has not been enough to combat a further drop in already low yields, and that this had brought the index down to its lowest funding level ever. “The tremors following the UK’s decision to leave the EU continue to be felt,” he said. “The path of future rates is likely to be even lower for an even longer period, confirmed by the Bank of England’s decision to cut the Bank Rate to 0.25% and indications there could be further cuts to around zero.” Recent business activity and sentiment surveys suggest there will be scant economic growth in the UK in the rest of this year, he said. Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
INVASIVE SPECIES This month we were supposed to continue our article about Santa Pola’s canine beach writing about some inherent statistics such as average number of users per day, “peak hours”, etc, but since we have had no response from the Town Hall despite we requested this info a long time ago, this months article will be about invasive species instead. One of the negative consequences of globalization is the massive interchange of alive beings from every corner of the world. Sometimes, these imported alive beings get so well adapted to their new environment that they can damage it. There are more than 12000 species on the EU invasive species list, and most of them are really dangerous for our ecosystems. Most invasive species are plants: some of them arrive to our area because they are strong or beautiful, so they are used for gardening, such as Tradescantia spp; some other ones arrive accidentally (seeds). When these plants start reproducing spontaneously, they may be stronger than local plants, so they displace them from the ecosystem, damaging the ecosystem balance. In case of animals, the mechanism is similar: some of them arrive accidentally (such as tiger mosquito or zebra mussel, which arrived to Europe because it was stuck to boat hulls), and some others arrive because they are intentionally imported due to their commercial exploitation possibilities (such as American mink or bullhead), or because they are exotic pets. We are going to concentrate on exotic pets, because they are an important part of our daily task. In previous articles we have written about “forbidden species” because they are endangered ones, such as some macaws, but in this article we are going to write about those species which have been declared as “forbidden” because they are a real threat for our ecosystems. We are talking about species such as Eastern gray squirrel, Southern African hedgehog, racoon dog, Florida
84
terrapene, mynah bird, red avadavat, red billed leiothrix, monk parakeet, rose ringed parakeet, African collared dove, etc, from a list containing more than 50 vertebrate species. Why do these exotic pets start living a wild life? Sometimes they escape, as it may happen with every kind of pet. Some other times they are released by their owners when they realize they are noisier (parakeets or mynahs) or smellier (hedgehogs or racoons) than they expected when they purchased them. These species are natural survivors, so they learn very quickly to find food and shelter; they create colonies in our public parks such as parakeets or doves, and they have a very effective reproduction. The presence of these invasive species produce 3 kinds of damage: -environmental damage. -against other animals. -against people (allergic reactions or even intoxications (for example the problem with giant hogweed). You can find all the legal info about invasive species at BOE (Boletín Oficial del Estado) dated 03-08-2013 (a pdf version is available at BOE’s website), including the list of these species. It is strictly forbidden to sell, to give and to have them. What do I do if I have a pet at home belonging to a species which is listed as invasive? The most logical option is to take it to an official wildlife shelter (Centro de Recuperación). If you don’t know how to do it, a Vet or a Pet Shop may do it for you. At the shelter they will keep the animal apart from the ecosystem. If you don’t want to get rid of the pet, you can tell the local environmental authorities to allow you to have it, BUT in this case you have to prove you have had it from BEFORE 2013. At this moment, there is not an eradication campaign of these species in Spain (that means, the animals are not euthanized), but we must stop them at any price to reproduce and access the ecosystems. Just remember what happened with rabbits in Australia…

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
BLUE BIRD OF HAPPINESS
Over the last two months I have told you about two of the most colourful birds which can be found in Spain but are not usually found back in the UK, the Hoopoe and the Bee-eater. Most British birdwatchers coming to Spain for the first time have those two on his three “most wanted” list, the third one of the triumvirate is the “Blue Bird of Happiness” (which of course refers to an American bird which is most unlikely to be found in Spain) so here it is - a blue bird which always makes me happy, the European Roller. It is rarely seen in the Clot, but is regular around the countryside, particularly between La Marina and Elche, where it often nests in old woodpecker holes in palm trees. It tends to favour open lowland areas with scattered trees, either cultivated or scrub areas. It is in our area of Spain from April through to late September, so you've got until the end of this month to find one!. Just look at my photo – how could you possibly miss seeing a bird that brightly coloured? It's a chunky bird the size of a Jackdaw (a small crow for those who don't know it) and is distantly related to the crow family. When it flies, you will see that it has a black trailing edge to it's wings,
86 86
contrasting sharply with the different shades of blue on the forewings. Rollers are not hard to see when perched either, the tend to sit out in the open on a wire or high tree to survey the ground around them for its favourite food of large insects, reptiles, rodents and frogs which form its main diet.
The odd English name of Roller comes from its activities during the spring, when the bird has an impressive display flight consisting of twists, turns and loops, while calling with a loud series of crow-like calls. One of the strangest things about Rollers is that their nestlings will vomit if they are disturbed, and this causes the parent birds to stay away from the nest – it is thought that this is a survival mechanism to protect the adults who may be able to breed again, whereas the nestlings may die from any predator which has caused the disturbance. Unfortunately the Roller population is in a severe decline, over 30% of the global population has been lost during the last 15 years. Some of this is attributable to persecution by shooters when it is on migration; other causes include changes in farming methods and loss of habitat. It is extremely rare in the UK, where a British sighting of this unmistakeable bird will bring the twitchers out in a frenzy. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
