Hello

Welcome to our October edition, it's hard to believe summer is over when we still get lovely weather.

This month there are plenty of pictures in the magazine so take a good look to see if you spot yourself or some of your friends.

Don't forget the brilliant M.A.B.S show being held at the American Rock Bar & Grill in the Commercial Centre. See information about this in the news section.

There certainly seems to be a lot of building work going on around the commercial area on G.A. at the moment, Lidl has been knocked down completely to accommodate a new look Lidl store. Then the empty large corner shop opposite Mercadona has been totally gutted and a new structure going on inside there.

Have a good month

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 72.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, and answers to your questions, from Paco Carbonell, Councilor of Citizen of Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any questions or problems you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine.

Just after going to press last month, we had a phone call from a lady who was disabled and was continually struggling to use the Gran Alacant Post Office as there was no hand rail to help her. As time has gone on, she now cannot use the Post Office at all, and has to get someone else to go for her. We contacted our Town Hall representative who passed the message on to Mayoress Yolanda.

Better than a new hand rail. The Town Hall are looking at relocating the Post Office, because of this and other problems. www.granalacantadvertiser.com

Below is news of the next M.A.B.S. yearly show. This is an event not to be missed. Proceeds all go to the Gran Alacant Cancer support group and is always a wonderful evening, watching members of Gran Alacant, singing, dancing, and sometimes even making fools of themselves. Jean, who writes below, organises, reheases and makes the costumes for the show. Confirmation that this years M.A.B.S. show will be at the same venue we had last year the American Rock Bar above Mercadona at the GA centre. The theme is a tribute to the stars and will run from the 2nd 3rd 4th 5th of November. As you all know it was a sell out last year and no tickets were available on the door. When the tickets come back from the printers we will let you know. We have started a pre booking list which some of you thought would be a good idea so facebook me should you want to be on the list. Now I need a Michael Jackson, is there anyone out there? call me or private message me on facebook, costume provided laughter always on tap and a great team to work with. All money raised goes to M.A.B.S. Cancer Support Group in Gran Alacant for the people of Gran Alacant who are fighting cancer. We are only a phone call

away. Thank you everyone for your support over all of our shows and fund raising venues you have come to. Lets raise more more more for this very worthwhile charity. M.A.B.S. Cancer Support Group for Gran Alacant. Thankyou, Jean Reiterbund. www.granalacantadvertiser.com Last month we mentioned that the big bike race in Spain, which had many stages all over the country, came past Gran Alacant on the N332 on Sunday August 31st. Quite a spectacle. The route was lined with spectators spread all along the main road, and standing on the flyover into the urbanisation. Big names such as the UKs Chris Frome were participating along with the whole of the UK Sky Team. We were there, with Sandra taking pictures, which we have printed out ON PAGES 62/63 www.granalacantadvertiser.com

On the 15th of August Santa Pola prepared themselves for the election of the ¨Reina and Damas de Honor ¨ for the coming Fiestas and year ahead. Each candidate previously presented themselves to the town hall and requested to be considered for such an honour. The pre-election took place at the town hall where all of the 17 candidates present chose an envelope in which five had the official paper inside. On the day of the election for Queen of the fiestas 2015, all five of the girls wore evening dress and then changed into the regional costume of Santa Pola. After which the public vote took place by all those present . This year one of the Lucky candidates just happens to be from Gran Alacant. Lydia Sabate Clayton was lucky enough to choose one of the coveted envelopes and was representing Santa Pola and Gran Alacant alongside her friend who was elected Queen,

during the fiestas which started on the 30th of August till the 8th of September during the year of 2015 Already a component in the Moors and Christians she belongs to the christian band ¨Guardianas de la Tierra Santa¨. And an avid fan of the fiestas she will attending all the official events alongside the¨ Reina and Damas ¨ dressed in the regional costume. PICTURES ON PAGE 63

During the month of September, this was all part of the Santa Pola fiestas which we programmed for you in last months issue. It is nice to report on Families on Gran Alacant getting well involved with the traditions of Santa Pola. www.granalacantadvertiser.com

Hi Barry & Sandra , I too like Guiseppe had given up any hope of improvements around the rubbish bins & other problems, re the poor state of Calle Malta. Although Loreto may have made some improvement many complaints she totally ignored after promising to look into the problems I had brought to her notice in person. Over a year ago she said Calle Malte was down for repairs , Calle Chipre & Calle Creta were re-covered in August but they were not really that bad at all compared to Calle Malta which still urgently needs re-covering. Many times i have complained about the rubbish dumped at the end & beyond Calle Malta , now supermarket trolleys are been dumped on the council land there , they i presume were used to carry the recent piles of rubbish which looks like some one has emptied a house of all its book videos etc & created a large pile. Maybe now we have a new Mayor she might be interested to pay a visit to this area at the end of Calle Malta & where the cul de sac ends. First taking notice of how bad the road surface is on Calle Malta then venturing onto the triangular area of council land at the end of Calla Malta to see the rubbish that is mounting up .Mind all the dog poo though!!! its nearly making a carpet. I hope with my complaints & Guiseppes complaints someone might get off there butts & take a look , hope they too notice the lack of street cleaning down Calle Malts , Chipre & Creta.. Heres hoping Bill

HI Bill, we will come to see you and be sure exactly where the problem is, as the new people have to be sure of the land owners. www.granalacantadvertiser.com Hi Barry, Earlier this year I sent you an

e-mail regarding the condition of the premises next door to us. The house has been empty now for at least 5 years, the owners having both died some years ago. The problem is with the ongoing neglect of the gardens with weeds 5 feet high and more than our share of the mosquitos With regard to the inside it would take a brave man to venture into that without some sort of defence. At the time your advice was to contact the local residence association. This I did and they suggested speaking to the town hall representative at the medical centre. This I also did and she was very helpful. She took my statement and faxed it to the town hall in santa Pola. That having been done we would have to wait for some response. So here we are 6 months on and no response and the state of the gardens is obviously worse than ever. So just wondering if you could dig out any sort of answer from the Town Hall Kind Regards, Tom Lormo

The Town Hall are going through tax payments to find the responsible owner of the property, they will then ask them to clean it up, or the town Hall will do it and send the bill to those owning the property. They cannot just go in and clean it up, as they cannot go onto the land without the correct permissions. But, they are will ing to go in and sort it. PICTURE ON PAGE 61

www.granalacantadvertiser.com Would you please ask the Town Hall if they would permanently fix the road sign for the Avda Del Carabassi at the junction with the Noruega. The wind blows the sign around so it constantly points the wrong way. Thank you.

This has been noted by the Town Hall. Please let us know of the result. www.granalacantadvertiser.com

The rules of the pool (Altomar two) should quite rightly be enforced by staff, and adhered to by users, regardless of individual opinions or their status as owners, holiday makers, rentals etc ! Or should they or can they be? Staff, either unwillingly or reluctant to enforce the rules for whatever reason, quickly lose their credability and authority. This is then taken advantage of by the pools many users ! Recently, by way of examples, I have witnessed the following which illustrates the futility of having rules which are not correctly imposed:

5

two small children using inflatables, within an empty pool, were informed of the rule disallowing such fun loving peices of equipment and were told to remove them. This they did with much disappointment! Within an hour, the same small children, still using the pool, were subject to a group of at least 12 men, making a nuisance of themselves, dive bombing continually, being very loud and obnoxious, and yet the same member of staff chose to ignore these disturbances, which according to the rules are not allowed! If consistency of the rules is not enforced and followed to the letter then human nature dictates that interpretation becomes an individual notion resulting in chaos, and undesirable to the many other users of the facility. I think our administrative staff need to ensure that those being employed for pool duties are fully aware of the rules, how they should be interpreted, and more importantly how they should be enforced consistently. It doesnt help matters, when staff reporting for their shift arrive in full sight of the pool users with a cool box, filled with goodies to sustain them through their long, and sometimes boring shifts. Isnt there a rule stating that no food is allowed ? Yours Sincerely, MJ Clifford an Altomar two resident.

Just an example of many such problems, in many communal pool areas. The only persons to solve this, are your administrators, see their reply below. Dear resident, We inform you that the access control service has finished untill next season. Also we inform you that the access controllers try to do their best inside the legal limits. It is imposible try to educate the population, even existing internal rules which are for safety and enjoyment. We want you to know that all the forms filled by the access controllers has been processed by the community, calling the attention to these who disobeyed the rules. We will inform to the Board of Directors of your petition and point of view, looking forward improvements in the community services. Thank you very much for your mail and your collaboration. Regards, www.granalacantadvertiser.com *** The new school buildings.*** The buildings were finished and are

6

equipped with air conditioning and electronic screens (modern "blackboards") as well as desks/chairs etc, HOWEVER the heating still needs to be installed/finished.

Some areas are not complete and previous verbal agreements have to be put in writing before the Town Hall can act. www.granalacantadvertiser.com During the night of 27th June 2014, a female loggerhead turtle laid approximately 130 eggs in a nest excavated in the sand on San Juan beach, Alicante. This is only the second time (the first was in 2006) that this species has laid eggs on the shores of this region of Spain in the last 200 years. To ensure the success of a plan to encourage these turtles to return to the Spanish coastline, it was decided to move 90 of these eggs to a protected beach and the other 40 to incubators at the Oceanographic facilities in Valencia. The survival of hatchlings recently born in the sea during the first few months of life is less than 1 per 1000. However, if they are released after they are one year old, this increases to above 90%. It was decided to release the first group of 25 hatchlings (some of which have been fitted with tracking devices so that their progress can be monitored) into the sea from a beach in Valencia. An area of Carabassi beach was chosen due to it being one of the few Valencian beaches which has been well preserved, undeveloped and has natural dunes. On Monday 14th September at 1730 these 25 hatchlings and one older turtle were released into the sea. This was an amazing event to be able to witness and is hopefully the start of the return of these beautiful creatures to the coastline. NOTE: During the night of July 31st 2015, another female loggerhead turtle laid 85 eggs on a beach at Torrevieja. This is a promising sign of their return to our shores. IF YOU SEE ANY SIGNS OF TURTLES ALONG THE BEACH PLEASE CALL 112 and let them know where you are and they will send out a team to assist.

Sandra y Barry

Hi everybody!

Just a few words to let you know what’s going on this month., no Moors and Christians parades in November, however there is still something to go and have a look at, the biggest fair in the Costa Blanca that takes place in Cocentaina 30th, 31st October and 1st of November, Cocentaina is next to Alcoy. The fair is divided in many areas: medieval, street market, agriculture trade, typical products, food etc‌ You will be able to find all kind of products there. You will need, at least, half a day to see it all. In Elche from 26th October to 1st of November it will be held the XIX medieval festival, with plenty of activities, theatre, music. Fiestas in Benidorm from 7th to 10th with music and fireworks. I suppose you know how we, Spanish people, go to the Cemetery to take flowers to our lost relatives, even if I am not very fond of this tradition I must admit that day, the first of November, the cemetery becomes an impressive place with all these thousands of flowers.

Also there are pilgrimages and local fiestas in La Nucia, Tibi, and Onil. Bye- bye friends.

Currently Poppet is in foster care but this will change the beginning of October when her carers return to England. She is a beautiful 8 year old pointer, very gentle and very friendly. She has leish so will need medication on a daily basis plus regular check ups, all of which K9 pay for. As a last resort she will come back to our kennels but this we want to avoid as she has been in a home environment for quite a while and obviously we want to avoid as much stress for her as possible,. If you are able to find a space for this girl and would like more information please contact

DEFRA’S INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT PET PASSPORT NEW REGULATION

These last weeks we have been asked by our clients several times about what’s happening now about the page of the Pet Passport named “Section X: Clinical Examination”, which had to be filled in the past every time the animal was going to cross a border. This is the exact transcription of our conversation via e-mail last winter with a DEFRA agent, in order to solve all the doubts involving this proceeding: From: sergio reina esteban [mailto:vetexotics@yahoo.es] Sent: 22 January 2015 09:50 To: Pet Travel (AHVLA) Subject: questions about new regulation Hello. I'm a Spanish Vet who works in a touristic area with lots of English clients, so I need you to explain me about some aspects of the new pet travel scheme regulation. The main thing is: if I fill in Section X of the passport (Clinical Examination), EU says I'm obliged to fill an Official Veterinary Certificate as well, which would increase 3 times the final price of the Travel Certificate. Here are my questions: -Do I have to keep filling in Clinical Examination at the passport? -In case I don't have to fill in section X, is there something I have to stamp in case of sending a cat to the UK apart from rabies? (I've seen at DEFRA website that Echinococcus treatment is mandatory only for dogs) Is there any 5 days period to respect in cats? -In case I have to fill in section X, in case we are talking of an owner with 2 or more animals, do I have to make 1 certificate per animal, or is it ok only one certificate for all? Neither my local Vet College nor British Consulate have been able to answer these questions. I'm Spanish and not used to British legal texts, so, if you don't mind, please provide me an easy to understand explanation. Thanks very very much in advance. Sergio. Pet Travel (AHVLA) Para sergio reina esteban feb 4 a las 6:25 PM Our reference: - PT 13818 Dear Sergio, Thank you for your email dated 22nd January 2015. Please be advised that whilst the entry for clinical examination is not required to be completed for the movement of dogs and cats to other EU countries, some transport companies ( ferry/ airline/ Eurotunnel) may still require owners to produce evidence of an animal’s fitness to travel. Veterinarians may, therefore, complete the ‘Clinical Examination’ section of the passport if they wish to do so and if it is possible. Alternatively, the following statement could be used as a guide by vets if issuing a letter to a client regarding an animal`s fitness to travel, should it be needed “On (enter date), I examined the animal described in UK pet passport serial no (enter number) and found it to be free from clinical sign of infectious or contagious disease, including external parasites, and in my opinion, is fit for travel”. You are correct that Echinococcus treatment is not required for cats returning to GB from Spain. In case that the transport company do not require written evidence of a cats fitness to travel, and a rabies booster is not required then there is nothing that has to be stamped in the pet passport for cats. If the transport company requires a fit to travel document then you would need to check with them if they would accept more that one animal per certificate or not- we have no requirements for this. Kind Regards, Paula

So, according to the words of this DEFRA agent, Clinical Examination is NOT required for entering at the UK, except in case the airway or ferry company’s internal rules say it’s mandatory for their clients. Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

I would like to report an attempted murder in the Clot. Fortunately, I was there to witness the whole thing, and managed to catch it on camera. As you can see from my picture, one of the local Moorhens is trying to thump something, but what is it? Those of you with beady eyes will have already guessed what it is, but the rest of you will recoil in horror when I tell you that it's a Brown Rat. “Aaargh!” I hear you cry, “I'm never setting foot in the Clot again if there are rats in there!” Well I've got even worse news for you. It is highly likely that you are closer to a rat right now than you would be if you were in the Clot – the labryrinth of underground pipework around your house is more likely to hold rats than an open-air environment like the Clot. There is one major reason for the success of the rat, and that is human beings and their utterly untidy ways. There are good reasons why the council asks you to put your rubbish inside the new bins rather than leave it lying on the floor outside. This particular rat in my photo had been spotted several times at the main hide, and it was easy to see why. Despite many pictograms around the Clot forbidding people to feed the birds, there was a period when some misguided souls decided to see if the ducks would be partial to a diet of digestive biscuits, and left them scattered on the ground just poolside of the hide. The ducks quite rightly ignored them as they have plenty of natural food in the pool, but this rat made frequent forays in front of the hide to feast on this unexpected bounty. Any rat will grasp the opportunities provided to them by untidy or thoughtless people. Back to our murderous Moorhen – any animal that is large enough will attempt to kill a rat; they are just about the most unpopular beings in nature due to their omnivorous ways. Rats can get everywhere, and the fact that this one was swimming across the pool proves that rats are very adaptable to opportunity; if it came across eggs in a nest or young birds it would not have hesitated to eat them. The Moorhen has very powerful feet as you can see when they fight each other, and if this one had caught the rat it would have held it underwater until it expired.

For those very few of you who may be wondering what happened to poor old ratty, he got away, and will be visiting your house quite soon... You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
