LUCY & ARJUN
A high school romance started Arjun and Lucy’s love story, and the importance of combining both of their English and Indian traditions made for a beautiful, multicultural, two day wedding with lots of dreamy details entwined. Lucy tells us all about their wedding extravaganza, and how they created their modern, yet traditional, wedding! How Did You Meet? We both first met at school - Arjun joined the 6th form at the high school that I was already at. We hit it off pretty quickly, flirty for about two years and then decided to make it official at our prom, just before we went off to University. The Proposal 11 years later‌on holiday in the north of Montenegro, as the sun set after a day of white water rafting, Arjun lead me down to a romantic secluded area by the Piva River where he had laid out hundreds of tea lights and a bottle of red wine and finally got down on one knee to propose!
'We finally got to show everyone how much we love each other...' Planning the Wedding The aim was to fuse both our English and Indian traditions, including both a Church ceremony and a Hindu ceremony. We knew we wanted to keep it local to where we grew up in West London and although tradition was important to us, we wanted also to give it a modern, fresh colourful feel and throw a big party for all our friends and family! The Best Part of the Day The dinner and speeches were great but we would definitely say we had one of the best parties ever! We finally got to let loose and show everyone how much we love each other and celebrate what we had just achieved!
"11Â years was worth the wait for the proposal!"
"Have a 2-day wedding (more if you can!) – you get to spend even more time with the people you love!"

NATALIE & CHRIS
Chris and Natalie's rustic, chic wedding left no details unturned with a beautiful bluebell theme running throughout. With an indoor barn location, glamping on-site and the added bonus of a carousel, how could you not fall in love with this intimate and relaxed wedding? We hear from Natalie who takes us from first meet, to first dance, and beyond! How Did You Meet? Chris and I met through a friend of a friend on a trip to walk the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand where we live. We had a five hour drive to our destination and discussed careers and Chris’ kidney illness which had resulted in him not being to work as a paramedic and deciding while waiting for his kidney transplant (from his mum) that he would like to be an anaesthetic technician. I was captivated, I looked at him with respect and also realised he was actually really handsome. Whilst on the walk we stopped for a few minutes to look at the snow, Chris wanted to kiss me then, he didn't, but the feelings were there for us both by the time we headed back to Auckland.
The Proposal Chris told me to keep the whole weekend free, so it was clear he had something planned. On the morning he suggested we go to the beach for a picnic. After a bit of small talk, he produced a ring box had he had made from reclaimed wood from his grandparents farm. At this point I started to sob, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him and through my tears I squeaked out a yes. It turned out he had been planning it for months and had designed and got the ring custom made with Kiwi symbolism and a moissanite stone. The rest of the weekend had had other surprises including a night away in a forest cabin with champagne already in the fridge when we arrived. Planning the Wedding As we lived in New Zealand and I had a full complement of grandparents we decided to get married in the UK. We wanted it to be in a wood as it is an important material for Chris as a part time Luthier. We also wanted it near where I grew up for ease with family and in spring due to the beautiful flowers. After a little research we found out the wild bluebell season falls for only a few short weeks in April so this seemed the right time with bluebells as a theme. Living overseas we needed some help, so we worked with wedding planner Vanessa from R and F weddings; she was amazing at finding a great venue in Preston Court in Maidstone. It was the perfect relaxed and chilled out wedding we had pictured.
"We had created the feeling we wanted"
The Location Preston Court was chosen due to its bluebell woodland area and the option of the indoor barn, but the carousel was a bonus too. Everything about this venue was just awesome; the small intricate areas to explore meant everyone was always looking around at something. Glamping onsite meant we didn't even have to go anywhere after the party! The Dress I had an idea of what I wanted for my dress so when I saw a Jenny Packham dress online I had to go to see it. I found it on Friday evening, tried it on on Saturday and bought it by Tuesday. It was the only dress I tried on and it was really that easy. I had a dress that looked stunning, I could dance a ceilidh in and wear my comfy All Bird.com shoes in. I felt beautiful all day long and enjoyed being able to be myself in a special dress. The Suit Chris has a Scottish heritage so wanted to show this by getting a suit made from tweed which he imported from Scotland and got made in Auckland - he opted for blue which matched colour theme. The Bridesmaids My two sisters were the obvious choices here. With them both still in Kent I gave them the choice of dresses and an opportunity to go on a shopping trip and have wine! They both looked amazing and I felt supported by having them by my side.
All the special touches... The Details The food was important to us so we went with caterers that sourced local ingredients that were in season. Everything was designed to be shared; this was emphasised by everyone being on one huge table with us in the middle of it. We hand made a table runner of pages from books. My parents had grown some Wellington boots filled with flowers and then we had florals from Blubelle Creative; she designed a large arch, lots of wild flowers in two big bunches with ferns representing New Zealand and bluebells for England with freesias as they are my favourite flower.
The ceremony was a celebrant led one that we wrote ourselves, based on the wise philosophy of Alain de Botton with the idea being an honest ceremony that acknowledges the hardship of a marriage, and not just the idea it would be happy ever after. We individually wrote our own vows and had not heard them before the day.
We didn't want a big cake, so we asked my brother and his girlfriend to make little cupcakes for us They were decorated in the bluebell theme with our wedding symbolism. Chris and I were much more into the cheese which the caterers brought out with the cones of chips. So the evening snacks were chips, cheese and cake which after a significant amount of wine, what more do you want?
The Best Part of the Day The realisation that everyone was having fun and that we had created the feel that we wanted. The relaxed atmosphere meant both us, and our guests, could enjoy themselves throughout the day and I am so proud we created this feeling.
Words of Wisdom If you're getting married abroad then get a wedding planner - honestly I had it so easy and was so relaxed about the whole thing. It was great not having to think about anything other than having a great time. We just had fun sorting the honeymoon which was the TransMongolian Express!

LISA & MATT
A stunning Yorkshire venue, a bride with a true vision and suppliers that made that vision a reality; Lisa and Matt’s modern, vintage 1920’s wedding is full to the brim of personal touches, sentimental details and a beautiful bespoke wedding dress. With a theme that runs throughout the wedding day, a bride that knew exactly what she wanted, and a dreamy Christmas proposal, this love story and wedding journey is swoon-worthy!
How Did You Meet? Very 21st Century - we met online on an internet dating website. The Proposal The week before Christmas, Matthew blindfolded me, took my hand and led me down to the bottom of our garden. He slowly took the blindfold off to reveal 'marry me’ written in fairy lights on the fence. When I turned around, he was on one knee on the ground. It really was so perfect and so thoughtful. Afterwards we enjoyed a dip in our hot tub (which was bought that week) and Matthew brought out pink champagne in flutes to celebrate. The Location We both decided we wanted an outdoor wedding including the ceremony. Ideally somewhere local and that we had both never been to before so we could create our own memory together. We were delightfully surprised to find Saltmarshe Hall, a beautiful grade II listed country house with acres of stunning grounds, less than 20 minutes’ drive away from us and we both never heard of it before. We looked around and agreed it was just perfect for us and our vision.
Planning the Wedding Our vision for the wedding, both venue and styling was a 1920s vintage, timeless elegant one. We wanted something classy and smart, something we can look back on year after year and think how amazing the day was. We chose the peacock for what it symbolises and used that in the decorations, cake, bouquet, jewellery etc. We added touches of silver and glass wear for that reflective element. The Details We wanted something non-traditional like the rest of the wedding when it came to the details and especially the cake. The lower cake matched my Louboutin shoes. The second layer matched Matthews suit, and then merged from blue to silver capturing the 1920s with its diamonds and pearl detailing, finished with a stunning peacock feathers on the top. The flowers where by All Occasions florists in Howden. They went above and beyond to capture my vision and the mood I wanted. I really didn’t want traditional! Instead I wanted elegant 1920s with a modern twist a few simple white flowers to compliment my dress and then lots of foliage and peacock feathers and leaf shape crystals. I also had a charm attached to my bouquet with a photo of me and my mum on, which meant a lot to me.
The Dress The dress was meant to be. I had to cancel all my appointments and only went to one which was with Stephanie Moran Couture. I gave Stephanie a rough guide - 1920s long sleeve boat neck fish tail, the design, an amazing one of a kind dress, and it grew from there. Stephanie took my vision and ran with it, nothing was too much trouble. Her craftsmanship was impeccable, and it fitted like a glove. It was everything I could have dreamt of and more. My wedding ring was made up of leaf shape diamonds so Stephanie also put Swarovski Crystal leaves on my dress and in my veil; this became another running theme through the wedding The Suit Matt's suit was purchased from Suits Direct and to carry on with our peacock theme he chose a stunning deep blue suit. All the men dressed in black tuxedos. Just like the bride, we wanted Matt to stand out and feel special... I cried when he tried it on! The Bridesmaids Matt's 3 year old daughter and my step daughter, Macy, was the flower girl and ring bearer. She was simply stunning, a real angel also dressed in white and wore simple white flowers and peacock feathers in her hair. My best friend, Mel, was maid of honour wearing a simple grey chiffon dress and peacock hair slide
"Don't be afraid to be a 'bridezilla'!"
The Best Part of the Day Seeing Matt's face when we had a surprise 3rd dance; I had secretly recorded his favourite song and it was played to everyone without telling them or him who was singing (made for a very special wedding gift from Me to Matt). Matt feels that was best part of his day too. Words of Wisdom Don’t be afraid to be a 'bridezilla’! If there’s something or someone you aren’t happy with, say so, as you never get the time back. Do your research finding suppliers that match the vision of your day, suppliers that are passionate about their trade. If they are excited as much as you are.. you’re onto a winner! Try not to stress and enjoy your unique magical day.

TY & LEE
This handfasting, Halloween wedding made perfect harmony for Ty and Lee’s Autumn nuptials. They definitely made a wedding day that was about the two of them. With some quirky, pagan elements, and a woodland themed cake they tied the knot at the beautiful Lost Village of Dode surrounded by their loved ones. How Did You Meet? A love-story for the 21st century - we met online (*eyeroll*) – not very romantic really, and we had a bit of a rocky start - certainly not a story we’ll be telling our non-existent grandchildren. The Proposal It was on my birthday. Lee had already proposed once before, but that proposal was only an attempt at stopping me from taking a job in Istanbul (it didn’t work, I went – but came back). The second proposal was more serious, and it was on my birthday. He filled the living room with balloons and one of them asked “will you marry me?”.
The Location We chose the Lost Village of Dode because of the venue itself – its location, natural beauty and fascinating macabre history (the original Village of Dode was wiped out by the Black Death). We were struggling to agree on a venue and I finally lost patience and told Lee to pick one and if I liked it, I’d agree. He found The Lost Village of Dode and I loved it, especially after we visited it two years prior to our wedding. The Suit I got mine from King & Allen in Wilmslow. The “theme” of my suit was “mismatched tweed” (as far as the colours were concerned), I decided not to mismatch the pattern - which was all herringbone. Lee got his from various places; he wanted to wear something unfussy and simple, and chose a suit from a local tailors in Shrewsbury.
The Details The main theme was Halloween I guess, but I didn’t want it to be *all* about Halloween, we drew the line at fancy-dress vampires. There was a pagan element to the wedding too with the handfasting and the nature-inspired touches. We didn’t have flowers as we’re not particularly “floral” and the wedding was at the very end of Autumn and on the cusp of Winter, Dode really doesn’t need it. It’s beautiful as it is. We got our cake from The Cake Witch, I had stumbled upon her work on Instagram and was instantly smitten with it, especially one cake which had a “woodland” theme with realistic looking logs as tiers – we ended up having a very similar looking cake!
The Best Part of the Day The handfasting, despite the cold and my nose going a bit numb. I was more relaxed by this point and was excited about the handfasting itself in the stone circle (and the mead!). I also enjoyed the tarot and palm reading – it was really spookily accurate – and I’m a sceptic with these things! Words of Wisdom If you decide to get married in late October (or later), tell/allow guests to dress appropriately for the weather! Hats and gloves included if necessary!

VLAD & ANASTASIA
On a mountain peak he went down on one knee... From a German university, to a forest, through a language barrier and to the Italian coastline, this magazine worthy wedding is so dreamy! With its model like Bride and Groom, its beautiful Italian backdrops and amazing photography you can see why we just had to feature it! We hear from Anastasia, who tells us all about her and Vlad’s love story… How Did You Meet? We studied together at a German, university but never saw each other, we eventually met at a chance meeting between mutual friends on a trip to the forest. After an awkward language barrier situation, we decided it best to talk in English and the rest as they say is history! The Proposal On one of our travels, we went to the Canary Islands amongst very beautiful views on a mountain peak he knelt down on one knee. He’d prepared and learnt a huge touching speech in Russian, it was a very romantic moment!
.
The Details We started preparing for the wedding a year before the date. I was quite particular about the photography and I wanted it light and airy so was determined to find the right style. The whole wedding was based around a fine art style which I love! I always wanted my wedding in Italy, in a cosy villa with the circle of people closest to us. I love Italian cuisine, the olive gardens, the music, the impeccable climate and of course the great wine. We looked through all the Italian villas in Tuscany, Umbria and near Florence. All wedding agencies offered the same thing, but we wanted something special, so we, ourselves went in search of a venue for our wedding. We arrived in Florpencia and went to all the famous villas, but they didn’t make much impression on us either! The last one on the list was Villa Palagina. When we got there I really liked the intimacy of it all and the pool with a beautiful view, chic rooms and bedrooms. I realised that this is exactly the place where I wanted my wedding to be. I wanted a real Italian feel so a traditional Italian cake was a must. I really wanted a minimalist, simple style, with white flowers, good food and great wine, and to be surrounded by closest family and friends.
The Best Part of the Day The best part of the day for me was the wedding ceremony in the garden of the villa, when my dad took me to the place of the ceremony, and my husband was waiting for me with my loved ones at the wedding. It was so exciting, and these emotions I will remember for a lifetime. We were crowned by our priest, a friend of the family. Everything went according to all the traditions of the Christian church. Words of Wisdom Relax during the wedding and enjoy your prosecco!

MINIMAL STYLING Styling & Words by Florence and Vera
Photography by Kate McCarthy Photography
Minimal does not equal boring, and from using simple techniques, paying attention to your surroundings and thinking outside the box a minimal stylish wedding that’s perfect for you can be achieved. It can also be beneficial in numerous ways, using less can both save money, and can mean using less ‘stuff’ meaning having a much more eco-friendly and sustainable wedding, which is always high on our priority list! Follow these simple tips and think about how your minimal styling can make maximum impact on the big day.
KEEP IT CLEAN Clean lines and simplicity are the way forward when it comes to minimal styling; there’s much less fuss and less is more.
FOCUS ON ONE FLOWER Pair back florals and focus on one bloom playing the starring role and build around that. Have less foliage and more dried flowers, as natural and organic brings a clean stylish look.
ADD COLOUR Just because it’s minimal, doesn’t mean it needs to be nude, white and grey tones. Stick to a hue but tone items with it, for example use tapered candles in a bright coloured hue to match the colour tones of your styling.
BE CREATIVE AND MINDFUL Define minimalism with creativity, focus on as nature intended, and strip back the plastic, the wrapping and the bows. Keep it stylishly simple with less items and less chintzy fuss.
OWN IT Just because minimal alludes to sparsity doesn’t mean that it has to necessarily be that. Improvise your own minimal and use a material, a colour, a backdrop against a low- fuss, stylish, organic surrounding and you can elevate your own minimalism.
INCLUDE YOUR SETTING Minimal settings allow the focus to be on the main event- the couple. Focus and look for aesthetics in the venue and really try and emphasise those, for example, use the architecture or a piece of furniture in there, for inspiration.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Think outside the box- minimalist doesn’t need to be a black/ white shroud - it can be tonal and stylish using a whole array of colours and palettes, whilst focusing more on the items around. Lose a plastic, wasteful favour and instead use a small basket of seeds/ dried flowers or a charity donation.

WEDDING SHOES
by Susannah Davda – The Shoe Consultant
RIAP TCEFREP EHT GNISOOHC
When my husband and I got married, I’d already been working in the shoe industry for 15 years. Surprisingly, my bridal outfit didn’t start with the shoes. When we got engaged, my Gujarati mother-in-law offered to lend me the gold necklace she wore on her wedding day. I felt honoured to have the opportunity to wear this piece so I looked for gold shoes to match. I didn’t find any I loved that were the right shade of gold, but I fell for a Dolce & Gabbana pair which incorporated gold details. The hem of my (cheaper than the shoes) dress was cut higher at the front to show my ornate pumps.. Perhaps you won’t prioritise your shoes as highly as I did, but your wedding is a great excuse to invest in the shoes of your dreams. Fancy a traditional pale satin pair? Go for it. There are thousands of options out there. But if you’d love to invest in a style which feels completely you, shows your personality, and that you might even wear again, here are my tips: 1. Be open-minded, and don’t be afraid of colour. 2. Visit luxury fashion boutiques and browse luxury department stores’ websites. 3. Look at the shoes in high-end fashion magazines (and for once, actually consider purchasing a pair). 4. Struggling to find something you love or that fits your feet? Buy a plain pair that feels good, and have them customised by Gemma Kenward. 5. Feeling flush? Commission a bespoke pair from talented shoemaker Caroline Groves. 6. On a budget? Add bespoke shoe clips to lower-priced shoes, or a pair you already own. Milly J Shoes will create unique clips for you and your bridal party. 7. Make sure your photographer knows you want your shoes in shot. I hope you find a pair you love so much you will wear them again after your nuptials. Want to know whether your dream shoes will be comfortable all day? Share an image with me on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #ratemyshoes. I’ll let you know my honest opinion.
Many brides end up in trainers or ballet flats on the dance floor. If you would prefer to find one pair you can wear all day and night, here’s how you can achieve that comfort: Don’t choose a higher heel than you would normally wear to work. That way you can be confident that pain won’t distract you from your perfect day.· Choose shoes or sandals with leather linings. Leather absorbs moisture away from your feet leaving your feet more comfortable. Having dryer feet also decreases the chance that your shoes will slide around and rub. Go for a perfect fit, rather than adding gel cushions, heel grips or insoles. If the shoes squeeze or slip off in the shop, leave them there.· One final tip: block heels won’t pierce through your beautiful dress and trip you up.

GNIEBLLEW GNIDDEW
USING FRAGRANCE TO CALM YOUR PRE-WEDDING NERVES
GNIEBLLEW GNIDDEW Our sense of smell is intertwined with our memory, mood and emotions. The part of our brain that processes smell is also responsible for storing memories and from birth we are consciously building associations between smells and the world around us. It therefore makes sense that smells we associate with happy times and pleasant experiences will make us feel good and those we have linked with memories we would rather forget are not those we will be drawn to.
This is going to be different for everyone BUT there will also be some common themes dependent on upbringing and culture. From a young age we are exposed to products that smell a certain way and so we are fairly conditioned (by marketers) to have specific associations. So the smell of citrus = fresh and energising. Synthetic white musk notes = clean laundry. Soft powdery notes = baby products.
With the increase in popularity of aromatherapy, more studies have been done to discover the effects of chemical components of essential oils on the body and mind and its now fairly common knowledge that lavender can help with sleep and chamomile to calm nerves. However, no matter how effective the chemical components are in theory, in practise if a person hates a particular smell it is NOT going to make them feel calm or relaxed so perception is an extremely important factor even in aromatherapy.
A drop of your favourite calming blend on a cotton wool pad in your handbag, A solid balm that’s easy to carry or a little rollerball or handbag spray is the best so you always have it to hand when you need it. Start thinking about the scent you want to wear on your wedding day too, because the chances are you will want to make sure that it doesn’t clash with your “calm the nerves scent”.
Which scent is best to calm our nerves?
Which scent will help with sleep?
The key thing with scent is our association with it so it will differ for everyone. I’m a huge believer in finding the scent that makes YOU feel good, feel calm and relaxed and using it regularly so your brain starts to associate it with calm. Once you have “programmed” your brain to link with that scent, you can pull it out whenever you need to calm your nerves. It’s more about the process than the scent itself. You don’t even have to wear it,
I’m a big fan of the bath and creating scented rituals to get through challenging times. Your favourite candle, Epsom salts and a blend of lavender and clary sage always hits the spot for me. Along with Lavender Vetiver and Jasmine have also been found to help to get you in the right state for sleep so you could make up your own pillow spritz or a couple of drops on a tissue by you pillow to help you drift off.
GNIEBLLEW GNIDDEW
Anything that makes us feel better and kick starts our own natural rhythms is going to be better in the long term than a drug. It might not be a quick fix but it will most definitely have fewer side effects. Sleeping pills even herbal ones can make you feel groggy the next day so definitely best avoided before a big day. Relaxing in a scented bath will help you to feel calm and relaxed naturally.
GNIEBLLEW GNIDDEW Which scent is best for confidence? 'I'd definitely recommend something zingy and citrussy in the shower to give a boost to start the day. Anything with Rosemary is great for clearing the mind too. If you want to spray something on for a quick boost I’d go for a citrus cologne or an “aura spritz” with a low level of fragrance that gets you going on first sniff butt hat isn’t going to hang around and interfere with your daytime perfume.
Which scent helps with hormones ? My ultimate favourite for anything pre menstrual is my all time fave Clary Sage although it is contra indicated with alcohol so possibly not the best choice for the big day itself but in the run up I would definitely use it in a massage oil and in the bath (providing you are not pregnant of course!)
Which scents are sensual for the wedding night? Either tropical heady florals (In Indonesia, Ylang Ylang flowers are spread on newlyweds beds on their wedding night ) or soft oriental ambers work depending on your mood and what scents you personally wear. A beautifully scented dry oil (I love vanilla and sandalwood scents) will give your skin a sensual sheen without getting on your clothes and can be layered with a complimentary scent.
This beautifully fresh, light, elegant fragrance from Yardley London has top notes of bergamot and clary sage, and a heart of calming English Lavender. £14.99.
The Lavender, Rose and Camomile luxury diffuser by VOYA is sweet, subtle and calming and will evoke instant tranquillity and a sense of relaxation on the big day. The diffuser retails for £38.

BREATHING TECHNIQUES TO CALM YOUR WEDDING NERVES by Mel Pledger - Best-selling author, psychology and coaching expert
It’s here. The day you’ve been waiting for. And you are a bag of nerves. It’s your big day, you feel that all eyes are going to be on you, and you’re afraid of getting stage fright. With that scenario sounding so familiar for so many couples, we’d like to share a few tips and techniques to help you carry on shining before, during and after your special day.
Pre-wedding – Setting the Scene Understanding: The fact is, the physical feelings we get when we’re nervous are pretty much exactly the same as when we feel excited. What makes the difference, is how we choose to interpret or label what’s happening. The next time you find yourself feeling nervous, take an immediate pause. A step back and re-centre so you can notice what’s happening. This can be as simple as literally taking a step backwards. Then, take a few deep breaths. And count to ten. Then choose another word to label your experience (yes, it’s going to feel odd to start with!) and gently notice what happens. It may be instant, it may take a while. You may notice a big difference, or something more subtle. Simply become curious and playful in finding out how giving a different label to the physical signals we experience, can change how we respond.

Breathing. It’s something all of us do every day and every night. So, luckily there’s nothing new to learn! This is more about understanding how consciously paying attention to breath, and deliberately exploring ways in which using a natural born skill can enhance our life… let’s first of all agree that it’s perfectly normal to be feeling nervous. Not just in the build up to your wedding, it can be during any occasion, and on any day of the year!
Instant measurement– breathing and movement
GNIEBLLEW GNIDDEW
A great way to notice and validate what’s happening in the moment, is to stop the positive and negative assessments. There’s a simple technique that helps us do this without judgment, criticism or blame, keeping us in the moment. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being “on the floor”, 10 being “top of the world”) simply notice where you are right now. Add a word or short phrase to describe how you’re feeling. And remember, a “2 – scared and alone” has just as much value as a “10 – excited”. Why? Because you’re acknowledging who you are in that moment. This is where the breathing part comes in again. Take a few deep breaths and let the validation of where you’re at move through your body in recognition. When you feel ready, shake it through with steady breaths… move your head, flick your fingers, move your hips and wriggle your toes (you can do this with big loud movements, or smaller quieter ones – depending on where you are) and enjoy the freedom of recognising what’s really going on for you.
On The Day – Enjoying The Moment When people get anxious, they often become more animated. Increased twitching, fidgeting, faster shallow breathing and rapid speech. When we notice this happening, most of us automatically find ways to combat what’s happening, because we’re focused on fighting the symptoms, they automatically become more pronounced. It also means we’re more likely to miss out on living in the moment. Not the best thing for the big day! Rather than fighting what’s happening, you can instead acknowledge what you’re feeling and It takes just a few moments to apply these three simple steps…
1/ Notice what’s happening: Simply notice. That’s all. Don’t try to fight it. Simply notice and acknowledge whatever it is that’s happening. 2/ Pause and breathe: Take a step back, or sit straighter. Just take a couple of seconds to do something different. Take a few deep breaths that make your belly move in and out. Tip: Spend some time practicing before the day, placing one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Guide your inhaling breath so that your belly fills up before your chest. Forget about breathing in and holding your tummy in – get used to the feeling of letting your abdomen relax and take in oxygen. 3/ Get rooted: Imagine yourself as a tree (any kind of tree you like!) and feel your roots going deep into the ground. And then gently sway in the breeze as you settle and regain a sense of balance. It can help to hold your hands on your belly throughout.
Connect and breathe –you’re not alone We all know the value of a good strong hug! If you’re feeling overwhelmed at any point, here’s a technique to turn that hug into something that’s instantly calming, holding, connecting and reassuring. When you’re in a comfortable hug position, simply take three deep breaths together. And with each exhale notice how much more connected and reassured you feel. Three slow, deep breaths, in a hug, shared with another, is an instant fix and pick-meup for any situation! And ensures happy smiling faces for your wedding photographs as well

HONEYMOONS MARRAKESH, MOROCCO
Most people won’t think of Morocco and the city of Marrakesh as a great honeymoon destination but we are here to tell you all about it and share how it makes a really romantic destination for a mini moon or even a romantic getaway with so many things to discover and do. We were invited to stay at the Riad Spice late last year to see how amazing Marrakesh honeymoons can be; it’s a 16th century property, lovingly restored by a British couple Mike and Lucie, set in the centre of the Medina (the central and original part of the city) near to the markets, boutiques, palaces and restaurants. They offer the most beautiful rooms and suites for the night as well as 3 day packages including a pamper break with Moroccan treatments and massages, perfect to de-stress before or after the wedding. What makes this Riad (and their others – they have 4 in the Medina) feel so romantic from the offset is that it feels secret, like you are in a hideaway that no one else knows about. You walk down a small alleyway, up to a large, old wooden door – with no signage at all. On opening, the stunning interior is revealed; mosaic floors, coloured glass lanterns, archways, and intricate plaster detailing on the walls. There is a central pool with an open roof, and low slung furniture all around covered in jewel coloured velvets and the odd pom pom. You feel like you are somewhere magical, and as it only has ten rooms and a team that really want your stay to be perfect, you feel special – which is how you should feel on a honeymoon right? The bedrooms are suites with sofas, ornate furniture, and more plush velvet! But how about Marrakesh as a whole? Yes it is super busy, vibrant and somewhat noisy but there are little oases of calm dotted (behind more closed wooden doors) that once you discover them, you have an overriding sense of calm washing over you. And this is what makes it perfect for a honeymoon; you get the shopping, the culture and the romance all in one. And add that it is only 3.5 hours away from the UK and the budget airlines go there – it is also an affordable and practical choice.
WHERE TO STAY? There are few large hotels outside of the medina that offer all inclusive or B&B stays which are great for families but this means you have a long walk or taxi ride into the centre and if it is summer time, it is hot! We suggest staying in the centre in a Riad (like a guesthouse) because this way you really experience the city and its culture. Like the Riad Spice, they offer a place to retire back to throughout the day, whether it is for the never ending mint tea, the roof terrace for a bit of sunbathing or some food. WHERE TO VISIT? Two places stand out to me as must go to places – the Secret Garden and Majorelle Gardens. The Secret Garden or Le Jardin Secret dates back to over 400 years ago, and was rebuilt in the 19th century. However it hadn’t been maintained since the 1930s until now; it has totally been restored and is truly beautiful. Divided into two mains spaces – the Islamic garden and the exotic garden, you can peacefully walk around discovering the planting or sit on one of the many benches and relax. There is a cafe on site too. When you are inside, it is hard to believe that just a few metres away is the super busy city! The Majorelle Gardens are a 20 minute walk outside the Medina, and is another serene space. It took 40 years to build; with palm trees, pools with lillies and many a terrapin too. But for me the real wow moment is seeing the blue and yellow house, once owned by Yves St. Laurent – it now inspires other architects with its shape and indeed strong blue. You will love it! There are also palaces you can visit, some in ruins, where you can see more of the glorious Moroccan architecture and mosaic tiles.
WHERE TO EAT? There are so many restaurants and cafes you will be spoilt for choice. The Riad Spice team have created a handy app with built in GPS (so you won’t get lost!) but also, recommended places to eat and visit. Through this we discovered some great places, both traditional and contemporary. DOWNLOAD THE APP HERE. We loved Le Trou Au Mur for its fusion of European and Moroccan food as well as its contemporary interior. We also enjoyed eating and the mocktails at the tropical feeling Le Jardin (humous to die for) and the Souk Cafe for traditional cuisine. The Riad itself serves food and cooked us a tasty vegetable tagine with cous cous. Morocco is a muslim country so there is not a lot of alcohol, in cafes, bars and shops but there are some licensed places to enjoy a tipple. Again this is where the app came in handy – through it we found an amazing 1920s French restaurant and bar called Le Fondouk with glass chandeliers, dark wood, geometric shapes and beer! WHERE TO SHOP? Marrakesh is shopping central! There are so many stalls within the souks where you can find leather bags, clothes, home furnishings, rugs and souvenirs but it can be overwhelming. We suggest paying a guide to take you round who can help you with haggling and advising on the best places to shop. The Riad can sort this out for you or you can simply use the app. There are a few artisan boutiques and co-operatives springing up which offer an alternative, and peaceful place to shop!
PRACTICAL ADVICE The Riad Spice offers a taxi service to collect you from the airport which is great – and helps you to find your bearings straight away. It is a Muslim country so bear this in mind with the clothes that you bring. Pack something to cover up such a shawl to be respectful but will also help shield you from the sun. They love to haggle – it is part and parcel of the shopping experience. Have fun with it, but do remember that when you are haggling over 50p which is nothing to you, that it is everything to them. The Riad Spice can help if you want to buy any larger items with transportation – speak to the team before you buy anything. It is situated near the mosque (as are all Riads and hotels) and they call for early prayer, early! If you don’t want an early start, bring some ear plugs! Overall, it is a hidden gem for romantic getaways and perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to lie on a beach for their honeymoon. It is also perfect for people wanting to take great photos (I became a little obsessed over brightly coloured tiled walls) We simply love the city and can’t wait to go back. Huge thanks to the Riad Spice and their team for a lovely stay which was gifted as a press trip. All comments and reviews are true and our own opinion.
