17

Your degree decoded

Need a little help figuring out some of the terminology used in this guide? Here’s a handy glossary to help you unlock your next steps.

Undergraduate

Applicants who have not previously studied at university will enrol in an undergraduate degree. For most students, this is a bachelor’s degree or diploma program, which will be dependent on your qualifications and results from previous study.

Entry requirements

Admission to a bachelor’s degree is based on Year 12 academic results (ATAR, IB or equivalent) or on the completion of a recognised pathway program. In 2020, the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) replaced the Overall Position (OP) as the primary tertiary admissions factor for Queensland Year 12 students.

Bachelor’s degrees

A bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate award of 24 subjects which is commonly the entry qualification required for many professions or further study. Most subjects have a value of 10 credit points (cps). Some subjects may only be worth 5cps, where others may be worth 20cps if they involve a major industry project or thesis.

Ultimately, the value of successfully completed subjects will need to total 240cps for a standard bachelor’s degree. Exceptions include the Bachelor of Laws and the Medical Program^.

Prerequisites

Some Bond University programs require students to have completed specific subjects, known as prerequisites, to be eligible for entry. These may have been completed in high school or a pathway program such as a diploma. Please refer to individual program listings for more information.

Combined degrees

Bond’s accelerated schedule inspires many students to undertake a combined degree — also known as a double degree.

Bachelor of Laws combinations are particularly popular, with the Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws taking just 3 years and 8 months (11 semesters) to complete.

This is just another reason why Bond graduates stand out from the crowd — you could graduate with two degrees in the same time it takes others to complete one.

Academic pathways

If your ATAR does not meet the entry requirements for your chosen program, or you choose not to get an ATAR, there are alternative ways to open the door to university study, including preparation programs and higher education diplomas offered by Bond University College. These programs can help you satisfy the academic requirements you need to then progress into a related bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of a Bond University higher education diploma program guarantees entry into the third semester of a related bachelor’s degree.

Diplomas

Diplomas are non-degree offerings offered in practical and occupational fields of study. A diploma can also be completed as a pathway for students who do not meet the academic requirements for direct entry into their chosen bachelor’s degree.

Bond University College

All of our higher education diplomas, as well as the Diploma Preparation Program, English program and Bond University College Foundation program are delivered by Bond University College. Located at our main campus and fully integrated with the rest of the University, Bond College provides a supportive learning environment where students are afforded extra tutorial time and academic assistance to prepare them for a full degree.

Consecutive degrees

To be accredited to practise in some professions, you may need to complete both an undergraduate and postgraduate program. These careers include architecture, psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and nutrition and dietetic practice. Bond’s accelerated programs enable you to complete both degrees and get accredited much sooner than at other universities.

Majors, minors and double majors

A major is a cluster of six subjects selected from one area of specialisation, a minor is four subjects, and a double major is 12 subjects. Depending on your program, a major, minor or double major can provide an opportunity to pursue a complementary interest area.

Foundation subjects and electives

Each degree will comprise a specified number of compulsory foundation subjects, and a certain number of electives.

In many cases, electives can be chosen from any faculty, which enables you to design your degree to suit your individual career ambitions or personal interests.

^ The Medical Program is comprised of two sequential degrees - the Bachelor of Medical Studies and the Doctor of Medicine. Applications for the Medical Program must be lodged through QTAC.

Construction, Property & Planning

For the creators and city makers. For those who want to shape the future of our homes, communities, and cities.

Lachlan Creese

PROPERTY STUDENT. ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR. TRANSFORMER LAUNCHPAD COMPETITION WINNER.

My favourite thing about studying property is... The diversity of all that I get to learn, and the high-quality lecturers that I have. I am taught much more than just the basic textbook knowledge; I get to gain industry experience first-hand.

At Bond I have...

Learned that just because I have come from a small town does not mean that I need to have small dreams. I now dream big and recognise that the sky isn’t even the limit.

As part of the Transformer program I have...

Had the support to start my business, The Grounded Company, which originally started as an idea to turn used coffee grounds into new products and increase their lifecycle. I have also assisted a local business to turn coffee grounds and other by-product waste into compost. I am helping them to establish their brand and bring their product to market through my business. The business is now evolving into an eCommerce platform for other small businesses to sell their products.

International Relations, Politics & Arts

For the globally minded; the citizens of the world. For those who want to create a better, more connected, and understanding world.

During my time at Bond I have… Participated in so many extra-curricular activities! From international Model United Nations conferences in Japan, to international moots, and getting involved in various student associations — I’ve taken every opportunity that has come my way. Involving myself in these activities has helped me to make lifelong friends, develop organisation and communication skills, and make valuable professional connections.

My advice to high school students considering their university options is… Think about what you want to get out of your education. If you value close relationships with other students and academics, personalised learning, practical skills development opportunities and an excellent campus environment, Bond would be a great choice for you.

You should choose a program that…

You are passionate about and can see yourself working in. But remember that your degree doesn’t lock you in to a particular industry or position. Study something you will enjoy and be able to dedicate time and energy to. There’s nothing worse than studying a degree that does not excite you.

ARTS AND LAW STUDENT. TOUCH FOOTBALLER. BONDY.

My experience at Bond has been…

Personalised, practical, and hands on. I have never been in a tutorial or forum where my professor didn’t know who I was. Before starting at Bond, I didn’t realise exactly how much being able to chat with your academic, or ask questions after class, actually helps with your academic performance. Bond has provided me with a student experience and network like no other.

In my opinion, Bondies are… Friendly and welcoming, with an unwavering commitment to reaching their goals. I haven’t yet encountered a Bond student who hasn’t achieved their goals or isn’t actively fulfilling their dreams.

My advice to high school students considering studying law is… Tackle everything that is thrown at you head on, and don’t let any opportunity pass you by. Bond provides so many opportunities for high school students that set you up for tertiary education — seize them all and have no regrets. And, enjoy your final year of high school and try to find that balance between studying hard and spending quality time with your mates.

Medicine

For the empathetic and the caring. For those who want to work on the frontline, making a difference in the lives of others.

Madeleine Condren

MEDICAL STUDENT. ELITE SWIMMER. ASPIRING ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON.

The best thing about studying medicine at Bond is…

The early exposure to hands-on clinical learning and placements, as well as the opportunity to participate in life-like ED simulations. Our small cohorts mean we get more 1-on-1 time with senior clinicians, which makes for a more immersive placement experience. There are also so many speciality societies running events that enable you to network and find what niche area you’re really passionate about.

At Bond, I have been able to…

Have a more intimate placement experience across both public and private hospitals, as smaller cohorts mean fewer students fighting for the attention of the consultant. I’ve been able to assist in neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and manage my own patients on the wards (under supervision of course). Bond also offers some incredible international placements, including South Africa, Italy, and Solomon Islands.

If I could go back and give my high school-self advice, it would be…

One suboptimal result will not prevent you from becoming a doctor. Use those disappointments to fuel your passion because if medicine is what you really want to do, you’ll find a way to get there.

Learn from academics who are the best in their field, and use my knowledge in real-world settings in placements.

My advice to high school students is…

Follow your interests. And it’s okay to change your mind.

ASPIRING PSYCHOLOGIST. DEDICATED VOLUNTEER. SOCIAL NETBALLER.

I chose to study at Bond because of...

The support offered to every student. I love that Bond has a maximum of 12 people per tutorial as it allows students to get the most out of their classes by asking questions and interacting with staff and their peers.

At Bond I have been able to...

Develop a passion for supporting children with disabilities by volunteering at the Bond Children’s Holiday Camp.

If I could go back and give 15-year-old me some advice about studying at Bond, it would be...

Be courageous! Take the risk and move interstate — home will always be there but the opportunity to study at Bond is so unique and exciting that it’s worth it.

Financing your degree

Bond University is a fully independent, not-for-profit institution that invests 100 per cent of your tuition fees into providing a five-star educational experience, state-of-the-art facilities, and a truly personalised student framework.

While our tuition fees are not subsidised by the Australian Government, they can be financed through a number of options including government assistance packages.

FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is an interest-free student loan program funded by the Australian Government for all Australian citizens and others who meet the eligibility requirements. Similar to HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP allows eligible students to defer their tuition fees until after they graduate, when they can then be paid off in regular instalments.

From 1 January, 2020, a combined HELP loan limit replaced the FEE-HELP limit and includes FEE-HELP, VET Student Loans, VET FEE-HELP, and HECS-HELP. Only HECS-HELP borrowing from 1 January, 2020 onwards counts towards a person’s HELP limit. Any existing FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP or VET Student Loans that counted towards your FEE-HELP limit will count towards the combined HELP limit.

In 2024, the combined HELP loan limit is $121,844 for most students. The limit for students in the Medical Program is $174,998. Repayments are made through the taxation system at a minimum rate of 1 per cent per annum when your annual income reaches $48,361. The rate of repayment increases as annual income increases. You can apply for FEE-HELP online once you have received an offer from Bond University with your Student Identification Number. studyassist.gov.au

Living costs

Loyalty discounts

Bond offers a number of loyalty discounts to students who have a direct family member attending an eligible program at Bond or who have completed an eligible program here. These loyalty programs may provide a reduction of up to 10 per cent on tuition fees.

Other government assistance

Most Australian students who receive some form of government income support are on either Youth Allowance or AUSTUDY / ABSTUDY. Contact Centrelink for more information on eligibility.

Student Opportunity Fund

As a Bond student, you will have access to a range of experiences and activities to enhance your learning. The Student Opportunity Fund can help to finance those added extras with assistance available up to $2,000. For more information, visit bond.edu.au/student-opportunity-fund

In addition to your university tuition fees, there are a number of other costs to consider when planning your budget.

Estimated weekly living costs*

When considering the costs associated with your university studies, keep in mind that Bond’s accelerated schedule means you’ll finish your degree sooner.
