The Opposite

7

Paradoxical Strategies for Less Stress, Anxiety, Worry

and Self-criticism

For anyone struggling with depression, stress, anxiety, worry, self-criticism, and/or relationship problems. You are not alone. To solve our bad feelings, we often tend to use strategies that seem logical, reasonable, and right, but that leads us completely on the wrong path. The solution, to the surprise of many, is to start behaving in a way that feels unintuitive, strange, and wrong. Quite the opposite, in fact.

In the pop-psychological self-help book The Opposite, author and psychologist Stefan Pagréus explains how we, by not listening to our instincts and instead doing the opposite, can turn things around and make us feel better. In the book Stefan guides us through different parts of life in each chapter. All while giving practical tips and tricks along the way, on how to turn the bad feelings around and help us get back on track. By changing how we think and act, we can feel better, be happier, be less afraid, sleep better, stop brooding, stressing, beating ourselves up, and have better relationships.

Author Stefan Pagréus is a licensed psychologist and runs his own therapy office in Stockholm. He has a background in advertising and marketing as a copywriter. Stefan is also one of the founders of the Swedish fashion company

A Day’s March. The Opposite is his first book, in which he shows us how we can use simple principles to tackle the life worries we all suffer from – and how we can feel better.

“The closer we get to the thing that scares us, the

more our anxiety increases. It makes it easier to think that if we don’t back off, the discomfort will rise to unmanageable levels. So we turn our heels, back away, hide and let it go. And just like that, the displeasure in our body decreases. But what happens if we stay? Well – drum roll – the anxiety will ease then too. If the disaster fails to happen (which it usually does!), after a while, the brain concludes that the situation calls for neither running nor fighting.”

“When I get over the crest, I see an ambulance standing on the cycle path. A young woman sits leaning against

the bridge rail-

ing. She appears to be physically unharmed.

The paramedics crouch by her side and talk to her. [...] What will happen now is quite obvious. The young woman will be taken to the psychiatric emergency department located nearby. It is a beautiful bridge with a view of Stockholm’s islands and water. It also got a guardrail a few years ago to make it harder to jump from. It saved a life tonight, I think.”

Suicide for Beginners A Social History and Modern Perspective on Life and Death

In 1983 Liz Rück, author Christian Rück’s aunt, died. The cause of death was suicide.

In Suicide for Beginners Christian Rück takes us on a deep dive into a societal issue we are rarely brave enough to discuss, even if it’s a topic we need to voice aloud more. What do we do when a child dies? Should a 104-year-old professor be allowed to make the choice to end their life at a death clinic in Switzerland? And why didn’t anyone stop the Swedish prisoner from starving himself to death?

In twelve chapters, the expert psychiatrist Christian shine a light on the wreckage and nuances after a suicide. He asks questions such as: who has the right to end their own life, and what can we learn about the fact that suicide as a phenomenon exist? Can you predict a suicide, and what does the research say? And what is truly a life worth living? We learn about the history of suicide and the modern perspectives of today. Alongside this, Christian share conversations he has had with other researchers, loved one’s who has lost someone to suicide, and his own personal experience and what he has seen through his work.

Suicide for Beginners is a book about the darkest corners of being human, while also showing how studying these aspects can make the beauty and fragility of being alive shine bright.

Birth Without Fear

Birth Without Fear: The Prophylaxis Book

An increasing number of women experience a strong fear of childbirth. At the same time, labour and delivery care is safer than ever, for both mother and baby. Physiotherapist and doula Susanna Heli has worked with hundreds of births to empower and support birthing women. In Birth Without Fear, Susanna shares her four most important and effective tools to avoid stress and fear before and during labour. With breathing, relaxation, the voice, and the power of thought, she guides the birthing woman away from fear and towards safety and control. The tools are simple and can be used during all stages of labour. They make labour an empowering and positive experience for both the birthing woman and her partner.

Birth Without Fear is suitable for anyone about to give birth, whether you are a first-time mother or a mother again, whether you choose to have anaesthesia or give birth without pain relief, whether you are terrified or just want to be prepared.

Taking on the cold season and the Nordic winter, knitwear designer Maja Karlsson has created twenty-five warm and cozy, woollen knitting projects. The garments range from quick-knit mittens, leg warmers, socks, and hats, to slightly larger projects such as jumpers and cardigans that require more experience. And some more unusual patterns for bloomers and a shawl. Projects to keep the whole body warm!

The projects are graded according to difficulty and are size inclusive. The book contains easy-to-follow descriptions and dia g rams, alongside Maja’s cosy and personal texts, tips, and advice. Ever since her grandmother first taught her to knit when she was six years old, Maja Karlsson’s fascination with the possibilities of knitting has only grown. Over time, Maja started to work more and more with knit designs, which is now her main work. She has a pedagogical education and has worked for many years at a conservatory as a lecturer in musical theory and singing. But as the knitting work picked up, she slowly but steadily built up her own business, working with pattern designs, writing, photography, blogging, an on line store, and as a course leader.
