The report
A project by Sarach Chantawibul CHA11348337
Introduction
This is a visual summary for the first part of the project 1.1. These are all about the development process of experiments on the given form, the square. The 10 chapters take you through my journey towards the outcome of this exercise.

Meaning
Before I jump into doing something about square, I take it slow and really study through all the keywords in the brief first. There were a lot of the keywords that I though I know but I did not really know it well enough. This process might seems to be unnecessary but it does help a lot.

Charcoal attempt
To get an unexpected result, I tried to experiment the square using charcoal, draw from each of the given keywords one by one. Even though the result does not look really perfect but it draws my interest to repetition / rhythm / pattern and the tint & tone.

Grid
I want to try create an unusual repetition but in a more systematic way. I plot a grid with a random length and colour only the square that visually appears. The result was structurally random but still creates nice pattern.

I also played around with the grids in my sketchbook with tints and tones which led me to the next exercise.
20
Water colour
I recreate the grids from the last exercise and this time I coloured them with water colour so that I could also experiment more of tint and tone for them.

Paper folding
My next attempt in creating a square was by folding paper. I was trying to create more square than what we actually see. Like when it fold, it creates another square than we did not see when it spread out.

Going out
While having a little doubt about what to do next, I took some time out to see those squares outside. I aware, at the end, that these pictures of squares I found outside are contain meaning as some of them are not visually square. I admit that I have to imaging an invisible connection to create a square.

But the point is, when I look back to those meanings that I studied at the beginning of the project, it led me to the next experiment.
44
Pinhole
From the meaning of the square that it needs four lines and four right angles while the meaning of the line said an arrangement of dots with a constant distance between them, comes this experiment. I used a safety pin to punch through paper to create a square. I also play with tint and tone by instead of punch down all the way through, I stop at the very tip of the pin.

Pin in a hole
From the last experiment, I received a suggestion that what if I did not pull the pin, what if I just left it there. So I did this experiment, I drew a series of squares with different tints and tones and visually translate them but put pins through canvas and left it there. The higher the pin, the darker the shade. As well as the shorter the pin, the lighter the shade.

Thread
As my experiment move towards a more 3 dimensional practice, I sew a square on a piece of canvas. My intension for this experiment is to create one square that can be view in more ways and still able to see squares.

This piece on the left supposed to be completed as a square-full of hanging thread. But sadly that it was so timeconsuming so I only able to complete half of the square. As I planned, when it is completed, we should be able to see square on every side of it as well as when view it from under.
71
Then, I created this piece which is a simplified and developed idea from the previous one. The hanging buttons can be viewed as a square on its front and from under.
72
‘SQUARE’
The final piece I did for the part 1 of the assignment is this book called ‘SQUARE’. It is an exercise of ways to create square(s) with black thread on canvas. I try to use different technique for each pages. Some needs to be view from a specific angle to see a square.
