‘BOOK IN A DAY’ PROCESS On an October day, 53 contributors to ‘Book in a Day’ gathered at sequenced times at a central location. Once registered, they were given three questions to consider for 15 minutes, after which they were interviewed for 10 minutes by an editor. The transcript of the interview has then been used as the basis for the material contained in this book. Once their interview was completed, photographs of everyone were taken and a quick debrief was recorded. The entire process for each person took under one hour. )RU RXU Ă€UVW ERRN WKH HGLWRUV KDYH FKRVHQ WKH VXEMHFW RI /HDGHUVKLS DQG KRZ HDFK LQGLYLGXDO has pursued it. In this celebrity obsessed world we chose to invite people who are authentic in their quest for Leadership. That means they are not famous, don’t have agents or publicists orchestrating life for them, and they don’t hold titles or positions of grandeur. The participants were invited to attend based on their passion and enthusiasm for life; and their quest to make a difference. The methodology underpinning ‘Book in one Day’ will capture the narrative and oral history of work, places, townships, communities, learning institutes or the wisdom of elders. This book is a collection of remarkable insights from remarkable people, picked up through one ten minute interview in one day... This is their Book in a Day

FOREWORD Lea ade ership p is nott a part tim me work hab bit bu ut a fulll tim me life quest. Leadership is often seen as a set of predetermined competencies or organisational positions. All too often business and politics focus on Leadership as a title, rather than what people actually do and how they engage others to make a difference. THE THREE QUESTIONS What follows is an edited summary of a 10 minute conversation the editors had with each of the participants. During the conversation they were asked 3 questions, which they were given to consider 15 minutes before the interview.

Question 1 How have you personally made a difference to someone or a group of individuals?

Question 2 Leaders are known for leaving a legacy. What is the legacy you are looking to leave?

Question 3 What is one principle or philosophy you have lived your life by that has been a positive LQテ々HQFH RQ \RX DQG \RX ZRXOG UHFRPPHQG WR VRPHRQH WR DGRSW"

AMBROSE I would like to be remembered for having a sense of purpose, a sense of fun, always wanting to know that I can make a difference and always attack and challenge with passion. Show some passion and people will buy in. It is about having the personal touch... You should go and discuss, debate and agree what the direction is and bring people along on the journey. If people agree and sign on to a compelling vision then the results start to come.

You’ve got to bring people along with you. You cannot embark on a major change process unless you reward and recognise the people making it happen.

BRENDAN McCARTHY “If the inner work is great, the outer work will always follow” ….. It is how you respond to the things that you are failing in, whether it be at a personal level, moral level, a character level or any other level; and how you deal with them, that can make a difference to other people. What you are projecting, hopefully, is that you are being an authentic person and encouraging other people to be authentic. I’d like to be remembered for living with my own ambiguities, contradictions and paradoxes.

ANTHONY BALDASSO The values I grew up with I have brought into my business: Trust, respect, honesty, integrity, loyalty, teamwork and support. These are natural values for me and this is what I apply to my business life. It has worked a treat in how I recruit, cruit, select and keep staff, suppliers and clients. If someone is happy then they are healthy. And that is a fundamental requirement for being successful. You need to chase something that is worthwhile. And it is only worthwhile if you are passionate about it.

TOM WILLIAMS I would like to be remembered as someone who could impart knowledge to others, to give them the opportunity to do things they thought they couldn’t. Mum and Dad always taught us to lead by example so, just because everyone else is doing something, you don’t necessarily have to follow suit. The easiest approach I’ve found is to be light-hearted and say, ”come on, if you don’t have a go we don’t know if I’m wrong – you can laugh at me later but we’ll just have a crack and see what happens.”

“The Wisdom of Ordinary people who are pursuing extra ordinary achievements” In our inaugural ‘Book in a Day’, we have chosen the topic of Authentic Leadership. Amongst our contributors there are students, educators, business leaders, entrepreneurs, social activists, elders and family makers, to name a few. Leadership has no boundaries, age, demographic or position in society. Ultimately leadership comes down to a question of character and whether a difference is made… This book is living proof you can write a book in a day... provided you have willing participants, rich content and subject matter; and above all you are well organised.
