COVER STORY | NANCY NASON GUSS NANCY NASON GUSS IS THE SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHOR OF THE SPIRIT OF THE TREE AND OTHER BACKYARD TALES: CONNECTING TO CREATION. HERE, IN HER OWN WORDS, GUSS TELLS US HOW BIRDWATCHING WITH HER GRANDMOTHER, WALKS IN THE WOODS, AND GARDEN MEDITATIONS INFLUENCED HER STORIES AND HER WRITING JOURNEY.
Connecting to Creation To me, all of creation and life is divine, and I have always loved being a part of it. When I was a little girl, my grandmother and I would spend time sitting at her kitchen window and watching the birds at the feeder, which inspired my story “The Window.” “Grams” would take me fishing, point out the flowers, and help me enjoy the beauty in the world. Our house in Maryland was adjacent to Rock Creek Park, and I spent a lot of time walking through the woods feeling close to God. I earned my BA and MEd at the University of South Florida, Tampa. After spending thirty-seven years in education, as a teacher for twenty years and as an administrator for seventeen, I found that morning time in my garden with meditation readings and writings helped me begin every day with positive energy and a renewed spirit, which I brought to work with me. Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved reading and writing allegories and fairy tales. I have the fondest memories of sitting on my great-grandmother’s, grandmother’s, and mother’s laps as they read these stories to me; I admired the art and pictures and loved seeing how these connected to the characters and events. I recall asking questions, sharing conversations, and learning life lessons from these tales and the adults who read them to me. My favorite was East of the Sun and West of the Moon.
“ We must notice precious times so that when times do get tough—and they will— we can recall these happy times, work together, and feel blessed. ”
As I grew up, I realized that these seemingly simple children’s stories were written on multiple levels and that they were perfectly crafted in a way that provided opportunities for generations to share life and reading experiences. I gain fresh insight every time I read them, and so I created contemporary tales written in the same spirit as the beloved classics. My book, The Spirit of the Tree and Other Backyard Tales: Connecting to Creation, is a collection of touching allegorical short stories that share peace-filled, joyful messages. Some are autobiographical, some have connections to childhood adventures and memories, and others simply admire the unique beauty in nature. The characters all learn something wonderful about our earth and life, and the children in the book are very sweet and wise. There is even an interactive section at the end, where readers can record memories or life experiences, and a list of characters so children can keep track of those they “meet.” I hope that my stories help every reader reconnect to creation, creator, and each other. We must notice precious times so that when times do get tough—and they will—we can recall these happy times, work together, and feel blessed. We must help our children to do the same.

THE A LIST | COL SUDHIR JEE SHARMA COLONEL SUDHIR JEE SHARMA INVITES READERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SOLDIERS IN MILITARY ANECDOTES.
The Other Faces of Soldiers It is said that the best way to learn is to do so while laughing. It’s also said that laughter is the best medicine and that a healthy sense of humor can help treat many ailments. In Military Anecdotes, author Colonel Sudhir Jee Sharma presents a humorous look at the soldier’s life, seeking to introduce readers to the lighter side of soldiers’ experiences. Believing that the military life all over the world is more or less same, this book has been designed for readers anywhere around the globe. Through Military Anecdotes, Sharma takes readers on an uproarious journey through the air force, army, and navy, while also taking a peek into lives of a sepoy and a general. Sharma exposes readers to stringent yet beautiful experiences from recruitment to retirement, as well as to the family lives of soldiers. Sharma has even been able to procure anecdotes from the British Raj days.
“ Soldiers do have a funny side of themselves, and it’s that humor that keeps them smiling. ”
Military Anecdotes is actually Sharma’s dream book. After spending thirty years in army boots and going through all the ups and downs of military life, he realized that humor is the single most important factor in keeping the morale of soldiers high. “Nowadays,” Sharma states, “soldiers live a real stressful life. When you see them in movies or in documentaries, you only see that serious stuff, but soldiers do have a funny side of themselves, and it’s that humor that keeps them smiling.” Though soldiers rarely pen down their anecdotes, Sharma took a pledge to present these anecdotes in written book for all the readers of the world. Sharma has also written two other books, Ordered to Laugh and Krut the Impossible. The author has been foraying into the creative and literary world since his school days. He was the first political cartoonist for a newspaper in Dehradun. Later he designed cards and websites for many companies. His artwork has found buyers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and in the corporate world. Sharma is an alum of IIT Delhi, CFTRI Mysore, and IMA Dehradun. He represented India in UNESCO (United Nations) in Chicago. Now he writes film scripts for Hindi and English movies. When asked the one message he would like to convey to readers of his book, Sharma says: “Through this book, know your soldiers and military and feel the simple human life behind the die-hard and daring look of soldiers.”

THE A LIST | H. J. CHAMMAS REAL ESTATE GURU H. J. CHAMMAS TELLS US ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE MILLIONAIRE, A GUIDE FOR FINANCIAL FREEDOM.
Keeping It Real Partridge Singapore author H. J. Chammas recently published The Employee Millionaire: How to Use Your Day Job to Become a Millionaire with Rental Properties. The book offers extremely practical, step-by-step guidance for people with day jobs to expand their money-making scope and develop a much stronger financial foundation. Chammas was inspired to write his book by the global recession that struck in 2007–2008. “When the financial crisis erupted, thousands of people lost jobs they thought they’d always have to sustain their standards of living,” he says. “For me, it was a wake-up call to escape struggling to make ends meet. It was time to take charge of my life and stop acting like a lab rat following a set program.”
“ Write from your heart, without any prejudice on your writing style. ”
The Employee Millionaire interweaves Chammas’s personal story, from a corporate employee to a successful real estate entrepreneur, with clear, straightforward advice on how to emulate his path to success. “I give readers a plan that they won’t find in other books. Instead of promoting foolish risks, I help readers leverage their positions as being employees to achieve financial freedom,” he says. In the book, readers learn how to evaluate the current state of their finances, overcome limiting beliefs about money and investing, set personal objectives to achieve financial freedom, and finally, think and operate like a seasoned real estate investor. In addition to the inspiration that he has gained from his own life, Chammas also had two other reasons for writing The Employee Millionaire. “The first reason I wrote this book is responsibility. I felt a strongly rooted feeling of responsibility to share those things that produced great results in my life,” he says. “The second reason I wrote this book is purpose. My experience in life, business, and relations has helped to identify my purpose in life, which is adding value to people’s lives. I was fortunate enough to learn from many others, so I wanted to pass it forward.” Commenting on his publishing experience, Chammas states, “Partridge has strong systems in place that allow both its staff and the authors to follow a set bulletproof system, with enough flexibility to cater to different authors’ needs. Being part of the largest publishing group gives them the muscles to make the book available almost anywhere and gives them the wisdom to help authors reach to readers almost anywhere.” He adds, “I believe each author shall invest in his or her book and work with a trusted partner, like Partridge Publishing, to draft and execute a strong marketing and sales plan.” Chammas also offers some writing guidance to aspiring authors. “Write from your heart, without any prejudice on your writing style,” he says. “Imagine yourself talking to yourself or a close, beloved friend and trying to open up your heart and your mind in telling your story.”

THE A LIST | STEPHEN S. CLARK STEPHEN CLARK INVITES READERS TO EMBARK ON A JOURNEY OF THE HUMAN SELF.
The Expedition Within Stephen Clark’s Exploring the Landscape of the Mind: Understanding Human Thought and Behaviour is based on the premise that mankind is, first and foremost, the outcome of the process of biological evolution. “Recognition of this is fundamental to humanity’s understanding of who we are and how we behave,” says the author. Clark, born and raised in Wisconsin, has a BA degree from Harvard University and a PhD from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). Australia has been his home since 1969. His professional career has included working as a curator in environmental studies at the Australian Museum in Sydney and lecturing in ecology and environmental management at Macquarie University. More recently, he has worked with the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service on the conservation of threatened species and biological communities. Clark presently lives in Canberra, where he plays the saxophone and, together with his partner, enjoys kayaking and a variety of other outdoor activities as well as traveling extensively in Australia and overseas.
“ Could I do this? Well, there was only one way to find out. ”
Having always been an avid reader, Clark finds it fitting that his book Exploring the Landscape of the Mind had its beginnings in three other books. Twelve years ago he happened upon Robert Wright’s book, The Moral Animal. “It aroused my interest in the growing interdisciplinary field bridging biological evolution and psychology and led, in turn, to the discovery of Steven Pinker’s How the Mind Works and On Human Nature by the eminent Harvard biologist E. O. Wilson,” he says. In addition, Clark counts Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species as a lasting inspiration. Further reading made Clark soon realize that if he was going to properly align this new and growing knowledge, the best way to do it was to write his own book, structuring all this information in some coherent fashion. “Could I do this? Well, there was only one way to find out,” he says. To Clark, the perennial problem of human aggression seemed a good place to start, and so, having read some of the literature on the topic, he wrote ten or twelve pages. “At this point I had no idea what form the whole book might take, but as I wrote something on various other topics, an overall structure began to emerge. I was well on my way and gaining in confidence.” In further discussing his book, Clark adds, “All living things have evolved the physical and mental attributes that promote their prospects for survival; they are good at doing the things that enable them to pass on their genes to succeeding generations, and we are no exception. Of course, through the development of culture, people have gained some freedom from our biological origins. Nevertheless, evolution has constructed the foundation upon which culture is built.”

5 Magical Writing Tips A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU WRITE ABOUT MAGIC IN YOUR OWN STORIES. Whether it is high fantasy, low fantasy, urban fantasy, supernatural thriller, or horror, many genres feature magic as a key component. It can range from subtle and inconspicuous to loud and flashy. It can have near limitless potential or operate within strict confines. It can also have a myriad of names ranging from simply “magic” to “sorcery,” “medicine,” and “thaumaturgy”—to name a few. Magic can have its origin in knowledge, the gods, the spirits, or even simply the luck of the draw or birthright. Regardless of which kind of magic you decide to include in your story, how you write magic will be an issue. Here are five tips and approaches to using magic in your writing. 1. Magic Follows Rules There are many cultures and folk-beliefs that contain a tradition for magic, regardless of what it is called or how it is described. These traditions follow rules, steps, and consequences to be observed. While the rules and causality of magic in these cultures may be completely divorced from science, there are rules nonetheless. The fallacy that many fall into when conceptualizing and writing fantasy is that magic does not have to follow rules. This could not be further from the truth. Magic needs to follow a structure, or at least be limited, or it loses its credibility and also detracts from the characters’ ability to bring about a resolution. 2. Magic Doesn’t Solve All Problems Related to the point above, when implementing magic in your story and setting make sure it clearly cannot and does not solve all problems. If magic does, then it removes all tension and creates countless holes in the plot. Consider what are the costs or drawbacks of magic and its use in your story. And think about what new problems are created by magic’s existence and use. 3. Magic As More Than an Accessory Think about whether you want magic in your story to be more than just a decoration or accessory. Can your novel be more than just an “action-adventure but with magic” or “a horror story but with magic?” Consider how magic must have shaped and influenced societies in your settings. What plot elements could you have that specifically revolve around magic and how it works in your story? These two writings tips below describe two general approaches to writing magic. We will call one soft magic and the other hard magic. 4. Soft Magic Soft magic is the kind more often found in classical fairytales: the cursed apple of Snow White, the fairy godmother of Cinderella, the puppet Pinocchio, who became a real boy. More modern examples of soft magic can often be found in high fantasy stories, the most prominent example being The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. The magic of Middle-Earth is both subtle and potent; it is never explicitly explained, but it is heavily implied. Such is soft magic: action leads to results, and the finer mechanisms need not be explained. What limitations there are to magic in your story should be shown, not told in words. 5. Hard Magic Hard magic is the other end of the spectrum for magic in literature. Hard magic operates by a very specific set of rules and laws, akin to real-life scientific laws and theories. Good examples of hard magic can be found in the works of Brandon Sanderson. In his books, magic operates along very specific lines, almost never deviating from what is established early in the book. When magic in one of Sanderson’s books does perform beyond expectations, it is usually due to clever application or even exploitation of a loophole within the rules by which magic is said to operate.
Forgotten Horror Authors A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK READ ABOUT SOME AUTHORS WHO CAN STILL INSPIRE AND ENRICH YOUR APPRECIATION OF GREAT HORROR WRITING. There are some authors who have sadly been nearly forgotten over the passage of time. These are authors who helped shape and inspire later generations of writers and even entire genres of fiction. Here, we look at authors who have undeservedly disappeared from modern discussion and thought, despite laying down some of the key foundations for modern horror fiction. For horror writers, these are essential authors to read! William Hope Hodgson An English author who lived between 1877 and 1918, William Hope Hodgson’s work includes essays, short fiction, and novels that often mix the genres of horror, adventure, and science fiction. Hodgson was noted for incorporating his past experiences as a sailor to enhance and enrich his stories, as seen in his Sargasso Sea Stories. Make sure to check out his other notable works, such as The House on the Borderland, The Night Land, The Ghost Pirates, and Carnacki: the Ghost Finder. Robert W. Chambers Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1865, Robert W. Chambers rose to writing prominence the 1890s and remained popular up until his death in the 1930s. His genres include weird fiction, horror, romance, wartime adventure—written during World War I—and art nouveau, often blending some of these genres within one story. In addition to a prolific writing career in his time, Robert W. Chambers is credited as a major influence on many future writers, such as H. P. Lovecraft, Karl Edward Wagner, and Lin Carter, to name a few. Chambers’s protagonists tend to be young gentlemen, often scholars, and often hopeless romantics. Two of his most prominent works for you to check out are The Maker of Moons and Other Stories and his most famous writing, The King in Yellow. Arthur Machen Born Arthur Llewelyn Jones in Wales in 1863, Arthur Machen was a prominent writer and mystic in the 1890s and the early 1900s. The rich Celtic, Roman, and medieval history of his home county, Monmouthshire, heavily influenced Arthur Machen’s interests in his formative years. In later life he studied alchemy, kabbalah, and Hermeticism but balanced his religious pursuits with a scientific approach. He emphasizes the expression of awe, wonder, and terror in writing—all of which he shows by incorporating ancient beliefs, folk legends, and scholarly inquiry into his stories. His works include The Great God Pan and The White People, to name a few out of a prolific career. In fact, The Great God Pan would go on to be one of the key influences on H. P. Lovecraft and thus one of the foundations of the modern cosmic horror genre. Put it on your list!

Education Reimagined by Maruf Hossain
This book is divided into two parts. The first part looks at various major issues as well as the future of the U.S. education system. Secondly, we hear from nine students, including the author himself as a student on personal narratives and specific issues that the narrators write about using their own personal experiences. Take a step into the minds of students and get a perspective from students and the issues they care most about. It’s time the government heard the voices of the students and make the changes we, the students, ask. And this is only the start.

Life Changes by Jason D. Minors Jason woke up that Sunday morning with a smile on his face. The clear-blue skies beckoned him. He rode his motorcycle to church. The worship service moved Jason to go forward to confess his sins. Relief washed over him, knowing that he had the courage to repent. What healthy, young, fit, twenty-three-year-old could boast that he was an angel? Jason became a little complacent on the beautiful day—a little too relaxed, a little too carefree, and just a little too daring as he neared that treacherous bend; little did he know that his young life would be changed forever.

Rebbe Nachman had a rough life, losing his children and wife to illness. He died at the young age of thirty-eight after being sick for years with tuberculosis.

Still and Still Moving by Nick Ringma
Still and Still Moving consists of travelling poems by Nick Ringma, addiction therapist and lover of language. The poems set in place by hotel stationary carry vistas and reflection. The title from TS Eliot to whom I was introduced in 1964. Last year, I reread my early notes on the Four Quartets. The stillness at the center of a turning world and the Hereclitan notions that the way up and down are the same journey coupled all moments. Looking at the journey of my experience through the letterheads of hotel beds united this collection of sleepless nights.

Solutions by Winfried F. Schmitz This book analyzes major causes of the Islamist ideologies of al-Qaeda and of Iran. It offers solutions to mitigate the violence of radical Islamist ideologies and eventually to dissolve them. It shows that the ideology of al-Qaeda is very much rooted in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With respect to Iran, it highlights the fact that the event of the overthrow of the democratically elected prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mossadegh, and the destruction of the young Iranian democracy by the CIA in 1953 is the most important reason for the severe mistrust and the hostilities of Iran towards the United States.

When Gods War by F. Howard Billings
The stone-age, cave-like beings of Zeon have certain death coming straight at them in the form of the neighboring planet Tareon. Zeon and Tareon orbit their sun in opposite directions, and every time they pass each other, Tareon draws Zeon closer and closer to their own orbit path. With no technology and only just beginning to discover electricity, the Zeons have no chance for survival. Follow the family of Kairn; his wife, Rayelle; teenage daughter, Evene; and younger son, Trillo as they and the other two million Zeons try to survive the convergence of planets.

Don’t Kill This Child by Andrew Robert Don’t Kill This Child focuses on the importance of us delivering that eternal purpose for which God brought us here on earth. It stresses that in an attempt to birth that purpose, there must be many tough challenges to overcome, but in the midst of those struggles and challenges, we must not let that child in us die. The child here speaks of the gift, transformative ideas, or talent that God deposited in every individual that only that individual can exploit, develop, or nurture for the benefit of others. So don’t kill that God-deposited child in you.
