COVER STORY | JAMES E. MERL BRAVE FLAMES AND TIME TRAVEL WITH JAMES E. MERL AND HIS NOVEL, CHICAGO 1871.
The Time-Traveling Firefighter Chicago 1871 follows present-day firefighter, John Kirk. While he and his partner are inside a burning house, Kirk is knocked unconscious. When he awakes, he is in a Chicago hospital, two thousand miles from California and soon realizes that somehow, he has traveled 147 years into the past to two weeks before the Great Chicago Fire. While trying to convince the firemen of Steam Engine Company 8 of the impending disaster, he comes to the rescue of an actress starring at a local theatre. John continues to grow, and learns to love the simple life of the nineteenth century. He is soon faced with the dilemma that if he changes history by putting out the fire in the O’Leary Barn, what impact would that have on the future? In his race against time, John finds the true meaning of love, brotherhood, and true sacrifice. The author, James E. Merl, is currently a truck driver and lives in northeast Washington State with his wife and two daughters. They moved there from California eighteen years ago, after James suffered an injury that ended his career as a firefighter. “I had worked as a firefighter for sixteen years. As a truck driver, I drive across the country, which affords me the time to think about my writing.” As far as his literary background, Merl has always considered himself a movie person. However, he adds that “since grade school I have thought about writing a book. After several tries, I quickly found that it was much harder than I imagined and gave up after a chapter or two.”
“ I love a great story with a suspenseful twist. ”
Although Merl had started numerous novels, it was not until two years ago that he had read his first one from cover to cover. “I’ve always found myself distracted by all the fancy words and had more problems stumbling on them rather than enjoying the story. Not until I read my first novel did I realize that you don’t have to write a story in a fashion to impress the reader of your knowledge of words. I played around with it and brought my 6.8 reading-grade level down to a 4.2 and have created a book that everyone has a problem putting down.”
Merl considers the biggest influence on his writing style to be Willy Vlautin. “I was having a hard time writing in third person and had gotten to chapter eight. One day while at a Jubitz truck stop I walked onto the set of a movie. That movie was Lean on Pete. After being shot as an extra, I purchased the book and was unable to put it down. That was the first book I ever finished, and realized that his first-person point of view and ease of words made it an enjoyable read. That’s when I found my style.” As for other influences, Merl considers himself a fan of Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery; Leslie Stevens of The Outer Limits; and Alfred Hitchcock. “I love a great story with a suspenseful twist,” he says. When asked the one message he would like to convey to readers of Chicago 1871, Merl says: “Find a subject you can be passionate with, and no matter how hard it seems to get and you feel like trashing it, don’t!”

THE A LIST | MARTIN FONE UK-BASED WRITER AND CAMBRIDGE GRADUATE MARTIN FONE IS THE AUTHOR OF FIFTY CURIOUS QUESTIONS: PABULUM FOR THE ENQUIRING MIND. THE BOOK, HIS FIRST WITH AUTHORHOUSE, WAS AN ERIC HOFFER AWARD FINALIST THIS YEAR. HERE, FONE TALKS ABOUT HIMSELF AND HIS NEWFOUND AUTHORHOOD.
Questioning the World Around You I’m sixty-three years old and retired, having spent all of my career in the financial services industry. I coauthored a couple of academic text books while I was working, but since retiring I amuse myself by writing a blog and the occasional book—or, as my wife puts it, “locking myself away in my office for a few hours a day.” I particularly like writing that is direct and to the point, laced with a touch of humor. Perhaps my most obvious influence is Bill Bryson. I’m also a voracious reader and a fairly inquisitive sort of person, and odd thoughts and queries pop into my mind from time to time. When I was working, I didn’t have the time to find out the answers; now that I have a bit more time on my hands, I’ve tried to establish definitive answers to some of those questions. Often, though, my investigations prompt more questions than they solve!
“ Follow your dreams but remember that writing the book is the easy bit. Marketing it is a whole different business! ”
My book, Fifty Curious Questions: Pabulum for the Enquiring Mind, is a lighthearted exploration of some of those irritating questions that nag away at your subconscious. We take so much on trust or assume that we know why something happens or why things work the way they do. It’s only when we stop and think that doubt creeps into our subconscious. The book is rather like a box of chocolates— you can gorge on it in one sitting or you can pick and choose to your heart’s content. It’s full of facts, but they are delivered in an amusing and entertaining way (or at least that’s what I hope!) It took me a couple of years to do the research and distill the questions down to a manageable number, and then a further two or three months to knock the manuscript into shape. I was delighted that one of the UK’s most prestigious magazines, Country Life, picked up on Fifty Curious Questions and serialized 14 questions from it on their social media platform. It proved so popular that they commissioned me to write some more articles on questions that don’t appear in the book. I’ve completed my next book, Fifty Scams and Hoaxes, which is a lighthearted investigation into the world of financial and medical skullduggery. It should see the light of day towards the end of 2018 or early 2019. For those who aspire to be authors, I can definitely give this advice: Follow your dreams but remember that writing the book is the easy bit. Marketing it is a whole different business!

THE A LIST | SHIVANI SINGHAL SHIVANI SINGHAL CAPTURES THE EMOTIONAL STRUGGLES FAMILIAR TO MANY INCOMING COLLEGE STUDENTS IN HER NOVEL, ROOM NO. 904?
Freshman Fear Shivani Singhal’s thriller, Room No. 904?, follows college student Tamanna as she takes her first steps in a place and institution far from home. For Tamanna, college means leaving her hometown of Srinagar for Delhi. She feels lucky to get a room in the college hostel—the eponymous Room 904—though she may not be as lucky as she thought. Singhal has recently finished a masters degree in criminal law. While completing her degree, she somehow managed to find time to write Room No. 904? “I decided in my graduating year that I would write a novel of my own,” Singhal says. “Accordingly, I enrolled in my masters program and continued writing this novel.”
“ Refine your manuscript and make it as good as possible. After that, the rest will happen on its own. ”
Singhal is a devoted reader of thriller and mystery. “I have read many mindboggling novels. They intrigued me to a level that I developed a penchant for writing a fabulous thriller,” she says. Her favorite authors, as well as her inspirations, are Paula Hawkins, B. A. Paris, and Sarah Pinborough. “I’ve aimed to write something like their exceptional works,” she adds. Central to Singhal’s theme in Room No. 904? is that fear is often accompanied by hope. This coexistence is personified in Tammana and also reflected in the college itself. Everything that Tammana encounters presages an ominous start, especially as the college has some dark secrets embedded inside its vast buildings. “Readers will experience how it feels when everyone around you knows about those secrets but stays tight-lipped,” says Singhal. “What happens when those hidden secrets struggle to come out, and you feel like you are getting trapped in them? You feel entangled in a mystery you know nothing about.” Singhal advises her fellow authors to focus on their story and writing skills. “Try to refine your manuscript and make it as good as possible,” she says. “After that, the rest will happen on its own.” Singhal was also proud to publish through Partridge. “If you have a good story, then you will find a suitable publishing house. And do not settle for a less deserving publishing house—keep striving for the best because your first novel matters a lot for your career. I have seen many writers that, in their impatience or urgency, settle for a less deserving publishing house and then regret a lot later on.”

THE A LIST | MICHAEL SN GODFREY MICHAEL GODFREY HAS PUBLISHED THREE TRAVELOGUES WITH PARTRIDGE SINGAPORE AND HAS VISITED MANY OF THE MOST INACCESSIBLE PLACES THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER.
Bitten by the Travel Bug “Remote” seems an understated way of describing some of the places that author and world-traveler Michael Godfrey has visited, and which he describes in his three books, Catch the Travel Bug, No Cure for the Travel Bug, and The Travel Bug Goes Viral. Such locales include Upper Mustang in Nepal, the ancient kingdom of Sikkim, and Madagascar, though the actual list of his travels is overwhelming in its diversity and exoticism. “Since retiring in 1999, my wife and I have had a fascination for traveling to places that most people would deem too far off the beaten track,” says Godfrey. “Whenever practical, we travel as independent travelers, and this gives us the flexibility to stay somewhere a while longer or simply move on. In this way, we have traveled around all the continents.”
“ By reading any or all of my books, I think readers can feel they have shared our journeys with us. ”
Godfrey’s travel experience is both personal and professional in nature. Having trained as a quantity surveyor in England, he joined his firm’s international division in 1964 and found himself working in Nigeria for three years. Subsequent to that, he was in Afghanistan, the Gulf, and finally in Southeast Asia. The books in Godfrey’s travel trilogy are not structured in any particular format. “They are jumbled up and follow neither date nor geographical region,” says the author. Each book contains between fifteen and twenty-two chapters, and each chapter covers a different and self-contained trip. “A reader can check the contents page, choose a country, and then be transported there, all from the safety of their armchair.” “Thus they can follow the trials and tribulations of our travel,” he adds. Other locales that form part of Godfrey’s collective itinerary include Antarctica— and its surrounding islands—Uzbekistan, Inner Mongolia, Oman, and Rwanda, and he has made frequent trips to China and Indonesia. “Often, language is a problem, but we have found that a smile and the use of paper and pencil will get lots of laughs as well as what we want,” says Godfrey. While Godfrey’s books jump around from continent to continent, his writing process is quite methodical: “As we travel, I take daily notes, and these, combined with photos or video, form a valuable record. I then write up this information, and send copies to a few friends who have similar interests. I eventually found that I had a collection that could form the basis of what could become a book,” he says. Godfrey is also quick to distinguish his books from the travel guides we find on the bookshelves in airports. “My books deal with the humor, the people, and sometimes even the dangers we meet on the way, as much as describing the places visited. Traveling the world has been a great privilege, and many do not have the time, the money, nor inclination to do this themselves. By reading any or all of my books, I think readers can feel they have shared our journeys with us.”

Nine Resolutions for 2019 A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK
If you’re the type of person who makes resolutions, it’s that time of year again. You might be planning on exercising more, losing weight, or trying to quit smoking, but we thought that we’d focus on some writing-specific resolutions for 2019. Try them on for size and see if any of them fit (we promise, no gym memberships or dieting are required!). Make time to write each day. Set a goal that works for you—for some writers, it’s a certain amount of time each day; for others, it’s a word count. Either way, try to write something every day (even if it’s just a paragraph or two!) Start a journal. This is closely related to the “write each day” resolution above. You might be battling writer’s block or need a break from your main project. Either way, a journal is a great way to chronicle your life while giving you an endless writing subject. Even just writing about what you ate for lunch, the day’s weather, or what you thought of a TV episode is better than not writing at all! Call yourself a writer! Being a writer is based on writing—not on the number of books you’ve published or the number of times you’ve been on a bestseller list. Stop calling yourself “an aspiring writer” or “an amateur writer”—if you write, you’re a writer! Participate in a forum. No matter which genre you write in, you can bet that a forum exists where fans can share their opinions, recommendations, and ideas. Find one you like and participate! You will gain a better understanding of what the fans of that genre expect, and you may even meet some potential readers for your book. Do what works for you, not what works for other prominent authors. Ask ten successful authors how they write their books, and you’ll get ten different methods. Some outline, some plan nothing ahead and just “let the story guide them,” others prefer a mix of both. The important thing is to do what works best for you! Read more in 2019, and try a new genre. Reading outside your favorite genres can expose you to new writing styles, conventions, and ideas. And you might even discover a new favorite author! Join a writing group. A writing group, either online or face-to-face, is a great way to get feedback, encouragement, and suggestions about your story. They are also an effective way of discovering plot holes or factual errors that you might have missed while editing. Spend some time marketing. Start spending some time doing your own marketing, even if it’s just an hour or two per week. Contribute to a blog, post a Twitter update about your book’s progress, or share some news on Facebook. You don’t have to be active on every social media site; just pick one or two that you enjoy and give them a try. Submit some of your work. Too many writers do the digital equivalent of leaving their manuscripts in a drawer, collecting dust. It’s time to get those short stories, novels, and poems off the hard drive and into the world. This year, resolve to publish your work, enter it in a contest, submit it to a magazine—in other words, let others read it! We hope we’ve given you some ideas for leveling-up your writing this year, and we look forward to seeing your book on the shelves in 2019!
Preserving Memories: ATIPS STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK FOR SELF-PUBLISHING A PHOTO BOOK While the internet has opened up many avenues for photographers to display their work, there’s something special about self-publishing your photographs as a book–seeing them as part of a tangible, permanent collection. And with the holiday season upon us, photo books make terrific gifts! In this article, we present eight tips for writer-photographers who would like to see their pictures displayed on something other than a computer monitor. Is your work ready? Seek objective opinions about your photos. Of course family and close friends probably love them, but strangers might not be so kind. Post some of your work online (at photo communities, blogs, etc.) and read the feedback. It might hurt, but some of it will be constructive. Is it a subject-driven book or artist-driven book? In other words, are you using it to showcase your work as a photographer or to direct attention to a particular subject? This will affect which photos you include in the book. Decide on a format. Photo books have traditionally been hardcover, but it’s your choice how you present your work. Maybe you would just prefer an e-book, to keep costs down. Choose your image order. Your book should tell a story via the pictures you include. With that in mind, create a picture sequence that follows some sort of natural progression (certain images might inform what follows, for example). Make sure your story isn’t disjointed. Show only your best work, or at least the work that contributes to your book’s theme. Every photographer has pictures that hold sentimental value. Strip away that sentiment (because your reader won’t share it) and be ruthless. Is it good enough? Present only the work that contributes to your book’s subject. Don’t include an irrelevant photo just because it was a great shot. Don’t forget the text! If you choose to include text (even if it’s just a short description of each photo), make sure it’s well-written and edited. Even though the focus is your images, poorly written text will detract from your book. Choose the right cover image. Your cover photo is the most important image of the book. You need a shot that is technically superb, grabs the reader’s attention, and expresses the theme of your book. Register a domain name. When you decide on your book’s title, consider registering it as a domain name so you can promote the book online in its own space. You can link to it from your Facebook page, blog, or whatever other online presence you have. Photography and writing are both great ways of expressing your creativity. If you’re passionate about both, why not share your work via a photo book?

God’s Obedient Potter by Richard W Murray God’s Obedient Potter illustrates the formation of my spiritual (religious) ideas, mainly in the context of the Christian faith. My ideas have been formed slowly and rely on church attendance, Bible reading (mainly the New Testament), books of review and radio and television programs, of which there were many in my formative period. My ideas also rely on my own life experience. As I probed the doctrines and beliefs, I gradually came to dismiss or modify them to form my own logical and truthful faith. The book also illustrates several of my manic episodes during the years 1984-2017. About the Author Richard W Murray was born in Sydney in 1946, grew up in Mosman and trained as an art teacher and sculptor. He then taught high school art in Canberra, Goulburn and Braidwood but left teaching in 1979 to become a full time potter. He developed manic illness in 1984 and have had numerous episodes, treatments and hospitalisations ever since. He now lives in glorious retirement.

REAP 23 by J J Perry Hundreds of years after the Repopulation, Expansion, and Annexation Program (REAP) missions departed, geopolitical changes wrought by nature and war obscured the missions, overwritten by subsequent history and buried under a short ice age. Only “Reapers retained the memories that became the basis of a religion. Thousands of years later, Porliche, a graduate student, pursues a faint trail left by the Reapers. She finds lost information of this long-forgotten program and evidence that the bunker built at its inception to receive the messages both exists and has messages from the stellar-bound saints stored within. What she finds changes her world. About the Author Joe Perry is a peripatetic soul based in Utah but living and working in various states in central and western USA. He has degrees in chemistry and medicine. He self-published his first novel, Between Love and Money, as Martin Filson. He owns a pickup truck, several bicycles, guitars, and backpacking tents. He has a large family, a petite wife, gentle dogs, odd cats, and a wide array of friends through his work as a locum tenens cardiologist. The Second Born by Arnold Robinson It was uplifting Calvin’s return and with a host of others to work the woods, especially with James falling in love and never being around when I needed him. The moon and stars reflecting in her eyes kindled my desire of a first kiss. The unexpected shock when the face a boy my age peered through the cars window, that of a half-brother? I yearned for the day that I might beat all others to feel a thin tape snap across my chest victorious once again. I’d crawl no further wailing of my losses, there’d be no miracle. About the Author I am finished with my three book series, ‘The Second Born.’ For many years I kept this story to myself thinking it might not be book worthy. But in 2001 I read a book that lit the fire in my heart, the very thing I needed, to write this novel. And for many years I worked on it with every chance I got. The Dead Giants, The Reverends Ways, and The Gant House all tie together to reveal the struggles in a young boys’ life in a place where change never came easy.

The Soundpost in the Violin by John E. McLennan, PhD This book dispels the mystery that the position of the sound post in determining the sound quality of the violin is critical. Placed outside the treble foot of the bridge, it lifts the output of the lower strings, making the sound even across the range and optimizes the “breathing action” of the violin body for sound radiation. About the Author John E. McLennan, PhD has been researching violin acoustics for 30 years using experimental methods. This has enabled the violin as a producer of sound to be given values for important physical acoustical parameters. The author has been engaged in research first on low energy loss silicon bearing sheet for transformer cores. Study of the brittle nature iron at low temperatures related to the failure of ”liberty” ships made in America during WWII. Graduated MSc (1964) UNSW for work on Internal Friction of mild steel. Bed 26 by Edafe Okporo Nong Richie was born in one country and came of age in another more visible place—Nigeria. In a strange world where he was continually persecuted, living became a personal nightmare of constant mob attacks and deaths of his friends to HIV. Nong escaped into the world of his mind from the expository details of the war he suffered as a child and high-profile attacks against gay Nigerians. Every detail of his personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently unlawful society emerged with every script of this book. This is his story of persecution and reclaiming freedom.

Intersection by Gary Cephas Intersection is a novel of Christian fiction. I would call it hard fiction because the subject matter is adult oriented. There are no apple-cheeked little children holding kittens in a field of daisies, only real people in realistic life situations where God influences some. There is family drama, tough dialogue, some violence, redemption, tears, and cheers. There is excitement and action, capped off by an ending that has the power to change a reader’s life. Such are the components of Intersection.

The World Is One Big Orgy by Patrick Tarnowski Ever since Patrick Tarnowski was a kid, he has been creating stories and tall tales. When in high school he created his own comic book characters and with his grit and determination (and unfortunate drawing skills) he made his characters come to life on notebook page after notebook page. As he grew older, he took his love for storytelling and tried a new medium, song writing. He started a band, toured the country, and released over a dozen CDs. Now as a father, he tells stories to his children and began putting those stories to paper.

Homo Transformans by Mary Elizabeth Ames This story describes a new species of human, Homo transformans, and conflicts that arise from their ability to transform into different animal species – including apex predators. Gene functions and the (imaginary) genetics of transformation support an innovative story of how some Homo sapiens became Homo transformans. The narrative describes the clash between morally corrupt organizations that use the capabilities of H. transformans to achieve dominance and the groups that defend and support them. Two factions emerge to determine the fate of the new species. In the end, the species’ defenders must face their mortal enemy in a battle they cannot win.

But when he buys what looks like an innocent jacket, his life changes. The jacket leads him to magical adventures that change not only his life but those of others as well. The Magic Jacket encourages you to use your imagination to discover the potentially unusual in the usual.

This catastrophe has seen the rise of anarchist groups, sickened by the greed of the establishment, now planning to bring about its downfall. While fighting to hold the nation together he is informed that terrorists have smuggled a nuclear bomb into a major city. He knows that there will be no Die Hard hero. Through the Eyes of Frank Tumbolt by Gordon Davis Early America was a rough-and-tumble land full of speculators and men and women seeking a place to settle and raise their families. The idea of manifest destiny was new to some, but the concept allowed opportunists to push west over the Appalachians Mountains into and beyond the virgin lands of the newly purchased Louisiana territory. One such family was the Tumbolts who had a young boy with the restlessness of the wild geese—Frank Tombolt. His desire to be more than a farmer gave him a renowned sense of wanderlust that would make him “a bigger than life” heroic figure.
