Cover Story | David A. Crum David A. Crum, a retired pastor currently living in Indiana with his wife, Jill, has nine sons, one daughter, and nineteen (and counting) grandchildren! His book, The Far-Away Dream, is an account of his combat experience with the US Marine Corps infantry in Vietnam.

One Man’s War Some, including my children, might say I’m old, but I’ve always loved the fact that I was born in 1949—I’m able to say I was born in the first half of the twentieth century. Although I grew up in a family of nonreaders (I am the sixth of eight children), by third grade English was my favorite subject. In junior high I was a master at diagramming sentences! I guess I was bound to make a living with words. Although The Far-Away Dream is my first book, I have been writing and preaching sermons for forty years, as a pastor and Navy chaplain. I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 to get away from working in a mill in western Pennsylvania. In 1968, I found myself on the streets of Huế (pronounced “way”) in what was the bloodiest battle of the Vietnam War for the Marine Corps. After a few weeks, I was the only man left alive in my four-man team, and I had been wounded twice.

“ After a few weeks, I was the only man left alive in my four-man team, and I had been wounded twice. ”

In 1982, I became a Navy chaplain. My first assignment was to the Infantry Training School (ITS) of the US Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. Once again, I was with the Marine infantry. Knowing I had been a combat Marine, the executive officer of ITS encouraged me to speak about my experiences to the young Marines. Until then, I had not spoken much about what I had experienced, but I began to tell my “combat stories,” and I’ve been speaking about them ever since. In recent years, I would hear my children repeat my stories, only they never seemed to get the facts straight, so I decided to write them down. My son Benjamin thought my account should be published, and he gave me a contract with AuthorHouse as a gift. I wrote The Far-Away Dream in less than a year, my story of one man’s combat experience from the limited vantage point of a Marine private first-class grunt.

My personal experience in Vietnam is really a story of how my faith in Jesus Christ deepened and how the Lord fashioned me into the man I am today—a man who is responsible for all the wrong he has done, while God is to be praised for all the good that has come, which includes survival through the deadly horror of Huế and having a mine explode below me a few months later. For many, Vietnam memories are more like nightmares. For me, they are more like a far-away dream.

The A List | Andrene Gregory Andrene Gregory leads readers on a self-help journey born out of personal struggle and insight in Ahh… to Zen!

To Zen or Not to Zen Ahh… to Zen!, a self-improvement book by Andrene Gregory, is described by the author as “easy to read, with quick tips, tricks, and techniques to help readers overcome the hurdles of life, careers, and relationships and get back in the swing of things.” More concisely, she states that it is “about how to move from a fear-based life to a faith-based life.” Ultimately, it is a key to dismissing anxiety and finding inner peace and a life that is better and happier. Gregory was born and raised in Jamaica and immigrated to Canada in her teens. A single mother of two grown daughters, she runs her own life-coaching business and volunteers when and where she can at nonprofit organizations in her community and at her church. Gregory also works as a program liaison in a mental health association. In addition, she has been writing her own blogs since 2013 and writing a life-skills column in her community newspaper.

“ Go for it! If this is truly what you want to do, let nothing and no one hold you back or tell you that you can’t. ”

She has always enjoyed self-help books. “Amongst my favorites are Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale, Stephen Covey, and Iyanla Vanzant,” Gregory says. She cites these books as having really helped her get through some of the toughest days and having taught her how to be strong and courageous. When not writing or volunteering, Gregory enjoys spending time with her children, reading, decorating, event planning, and traveling—“preferably where the sea meets the sky,” she adds. Gregory isn’t sure what exactly inspired and motivated her to write her book. “I just felt it was something I needed to do to create credibility for my life-coaching business,” she says. She noticed that a lot of life coaches, influencers, and thought leaders she followed on Twitter were also authors. “I remember going to the library one day back in 2013 after losing my job of seven years and nine months and stumbling upon a Maria Shriver book entitled WE Empower. As I flipped through the pages, I got more enlivened with every turn—both for what I was reading and for the idea that I could produce something like it.” A guru in self-improvement and motivation, Gregory offers this advice to aspiring authors: “Go for it! If this is truly what you want to do, let nothing and no one hold you back or tell you that you can’t. Yes, you can!”

The A List | Danny Teller Fueled by his passion for teaching, travel, and telling his stories to the world, Partridge Singapore’s Danny Teller has published five books and shows no signs of stopping.

Storyteller by Name and by Nature Danny Teller has published five books with Partridge Singapore, and his latest release is From a Foreign English Teacher’s Point of View in the People’s Republic of China. The book explores Teller’s experiences in the Middle Kingdom, where he started teaching in 2009. “It’s all about the reasons, purpose, and qualities of living in China,” he says. Nonetheless, Teller’s career as an author began well before that. “In 1986, while I was living in Israel, I decided to start a hobby, which was based on creative writing because of my travel adventures in two countries (England and Israel). As the passage of time progressed, I experienced many new and exciting adventures, such as being a soldier in the Israeli Defense Forces.”

“ My short and long-term goals are to continue to write stories and travel to as many countries as possible. ”

The experience gave him material for his first book. “I decided to tell the world what I had done, why I had done it, and mostly importantly, what can be learnt, good and bad,” he says, and 2016 saw the publication of Full of Jewish Promise and Spiritual Adventures: Background of Israelis, the Jewish Religion, the Land and the Bible through Poetry. A second book followed shortly after in the same year, titled The Nepalese Legacy in Short Stories. “This is all about my exploits in Nepal during two trips in 2002–3 and 2005,” says Teller. “Both books,” he adds, “are a reflection of my life, values, talents, and interactions with other people of both sexes and all age groups.” A further book on Nepal followed called A First Helping of Rice, Lentils, and Vegetables for All to Share and Care, Part One. In this second tribute to the Himalayan kingdom, Teller talks about the teaching program that he was involved in from 2002 to 2003. After spending much of 2017 writing, Teller published the The Challenge of Making Aliya to Aretz Israel because It Was Never Really a Dull Moment, Part One in 2018. He describes the book as “the novel of novels—once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down until it’s finished.” As one can see, Teller has a passion for travel and culture and for putting his thoughts and experiences on paper. He is also inspired by his avid reading. “Naturally, I’ve been a bookworm for a long period of time, and getting to know the writing styles of other authors has allowed me to learn and create my own way of expressing myself.” Appropriately, he says that “my short and long-term goals are to continue to write stories and travel to as many countries as possible.” Commenting on his publishing experience, Teller says, “I would like to pay special tribute to the staff associated with Partridge for making my publishing experience a memorable one. I sincerely hope to continue to write and do business with them for many more years to come.” Teller’s message to authors is straightforward and simple: “If you want to do it, just do it. Never mind what other people say about you. If you have a target—for example, to win a prize or just to share experiences—then go for it. I am sure that there are other people who wish to listen and to share what you have to tell them. This can and will work both ways.”

The A List | Ajit Mani Ajit Mani’s The Nawab’s Tears takes us on a thrilling adventure to recover a priceless necklace and features fascinating insights into history and secret societies.

A Chase through History and Mystery The Nawab’s Tears commences with Professor Avaran Kuriakose, a specialist in Indian history, being called to decipher a set of clues contained in a Masonic Lodge Minutes book and a 250-year-old diary. This leads to him locating a long-lost family heirloom with a gory past. As a Freemason and Knight Templar, Avaran realizes that being involved in this assignment puts his life in danger. The author, Ajit Mani, has a thorough knowledge of his subject matter. An Anglo-Indian, he was inspired by one of his teachers at boarding school to learn more about Indian history and later earned a degree in this field from his university. In addition, he is a Freemason and Knight Templar himself, just like his protagonist.

“ If you have a story to tell, you are a potential author! ”

The historical background of Mani’s novel begins in the mid-1500s, though the main focus is on the Carnatic Wars, which took place from 1746–1763. During these wars, a priceless necklace called “The Nawab’s Tears,” which belongs to two nawabs (viceroys) of India’s Deccan region, goes missing. While the search for the necklace provides a cloak-and-dagger element to the novel, Mani intensifies the thrill by making the heirloom haunted. “The necklace is believed to bring extreme bad fortune to anyone who wears it,” he says. Thus, the stage is set for a novel combining history, mystery, and a great deal of danger. Along with these aspects, Mani infuses the book with several elements of Freemasonry, such as “brotherly love, relief, and truth.” He adds that “these tenets form the underlying values that appear and reappear throughout the narrative.” Mani has always enjoyed writing and harnessed his love for this hobby as a foundation for composing The Nawab’s Tears. “I have been writing blogs for select online groups and that gave me the confidence to venture on to a more serious work, which would present a story within a historical context. I also wanted to create an interest in my readers in the history of the Vijayanagara Empire, which ruled most of southern India,” he says. “The story of the disappearance and fate of the vast treasure of this empire, reportedly on the backs of 550 elephants, is an unsolved mystery that I found intriguing. I have woven some strands of the disappearance of this treasure into the fabric of my story.” His experience with the secret societies discussed in his book also informs his narrative. “My joining the Freemasons and Knights Templar gave me opportunities to go beyond rituals and study the real purpose of such secret societies as the Invisible College, Rosicrucians, and Illuminati,” Mani says, adding that in The Nawab’s Tears he has “invented completely new rituals to give readers a glimpse into the esoteric world of these societies.” Mani found his experience publishing with Partridge to be smooth and enjoyable. “I had the most courteous and prompt service from Partridge executives,” he says. “I was very impressed by the speed at which the process advanced, taking full advantage of modern technology.” His message to readers concerns his country’s national identity: “India belongs to everyone who lives in India as a legal citizen,” he says. “India’s focus should be on unity, not uniformity. India’s diversity is its strength, and we must learn to lead the country forward while respecting the culture and history of all provinces, which are unique.” As for Mani’s message to authors, he keeps it short and simple: “If you have a story to tell, you are a potential author!”

Writing the Antihero, A STEP-BY-STEP TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK the APPROACH Original Bad Boy For better or worse, modern media has become fascinated with the figure of the antihero, the “bad boy.” Thus the antihero has appeared in various forms, and in a variety of mediums, over the centuries. While the tradition of the flawed protagonist has persisted throughout human literary history, the closer we get to the current day, the more frequent and varied we see depictions of a character who is technically the hero—the protagonist whose story we follow—yet who displays a range of traits and qualities that are distinctly and recognizably “unheroic.” This is the antihero. Reduced to its most basic, the antihero is a main character or protagonist who has either unheroic motives, uses questionable if not unheroic methods, or displays decidedly unheroic characteristics, all by contextually current understandings of heroic qualities. Motivation The reason for why characters do something heroic, even if the results are exactly the same, can distinguish who is a hero and who is an antihero. Take these two depictions of Robin Hood: the heroic Robin Hood is driven by altruism, to help his fellow Englishmen and to stand up against Prince John’s tyranny; thus, he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. The antihero Robin Hood may be driven by a vendetta against Prince John and so to garner a good public image and help rouse his fellow Englishmen in rebellion against Prince John, he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Methods Another difference between a traditional hero and an antihero is the methods each use. In an inverse of the above Robin Hood, example, two characters can have similar if not the same motivations. What differentiates the hero and antihero are the methods they are willing to implement in service to that motivation. Let’s take a look at parallel examples of Batman and the Punisher, of DC and Marvel Comics respectively. Batman’s family is killed before his eyes; that pain and loss drive him to fight and prevent crime. But while his demeanor is dark, and his use of fear ethically questionable, Batman goes to great lengths to not kill even the worst villains he confronts. The Punisher’s family was also killed, similarly scarring him with pain and loss. He too is thus driven to fight crime. But unlike Batman, the Punisher shows no restraint, freely using anything and everything—from his fists to rocket launchers— to kill any criminals he catches in his path. This firmly designates Batman as a hero and the Punisher as an antihero. In other examples, antiheroes have been known to lie, cheat, steal, betray, and even murder in pursuit of their goals, whether selfish or selfless. Relationships Another key element that identifies the antihero are relationships, what relationships they have and how they handle them. While it is fairly common for antihero characters to regularly interact with people, at times very positively, it is rare for an antihero character to have more than a few if any close friends or confidants. The tendency for many antihero characters is to have few relationships that are not unhealthy, based solely on mutual self-interest, and lacking in trust. Even the few relationships with close friends or (especially) family can be wracked with doubt and trust issues.

5 Urban Fantasy A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING Writing Tips YOUR BOOK A fairly recent subgenre, urban fantasy combines many elements of fiction to produce stories blending together the fantastic with the recognizably mundane. The core premise of urban fantasy is that even in the modern day, there are still shadows, as well as veils and curtains behind which the strange and fantastical still exist. Tip #1—Research Folklore research can be a major source of ideas and inspiration for crafting your urban fantasy setting, in particular the creatures and beings that inhabit it. In addition to popular classics like vampires, ghosts, and werewolves, consider also the legendary beings out of local, regional folklore—for example, the Jersey Devil of New Jersey or creatures out of Native American folklore, especially as certain beings only pop up among specific tribal nations and regions. Tip #2—The Urban Fantasy Protagonist An important element to keep in mind for an urban fantasy protagonist is the ability to traverse between the mundane and the fantastic. This involves interacting with both regular people and beings that are not quite human and understanding the rules and laws that govern both worlds. Whether your protagonist is a wizard private eye, a half-vampire reporter, or something else, they need to be someone who straddles the line between the natural and the supernatural. Tip #3—It Takes a City The city of your story should have a character, an identity to it, much like your protagonist and the people or beings they interact with. The best urban fantasy makes sure to give the city a character of its own. The people, the locations, the culture, all bring a city to life and are necessary if you want your urban fantasy to actually feel urban. So it helps you as a writer to be familiar with a city, especially its culture and history. Popular cities for such stories include large ones like London, New York City, Chicago, or Los Angeles. What are the joys of living and working in your selected city? The frustrations? The sights, the sounds, and the food? How do different neighborhoods and districts embody different sides or faces of the same city? Asking yourself these kinds of questions can help you bring your chosen city to life, making it just as much a character as your heroes or villains. Tip #4—World Building In addition to bringing your city and its inhabitants to life, you will also need to do the same for the fantastical elements of your story. Establish the rules of how magic works in your setting. What kind of supernatural creatures exist? How do they interact with or perceive humans? Who are the ruling powers of the supernatural world and how do they keep their power? What rules, laws, and accords keep the various supernatural powers from accidentally revealing themselves to the mundane populace who greatly outnumbers them? These are the kinds of questions you will need to ask and answer to build your urban fantasy world. Tip #5—Clashing Worlds The concept of “clashing worlds” provides for good themes, sources of conflict, and plot elements. At its core, urban fantasy is a clash between the world familiar to readers and the fantastical world hidden in the shadows. The rules that govern one may be completely different for the other. What a human may see as morally right, a vampire may consider an inconvenience necessary to remain hidden from the wider world.

Trapped in My Mind by L.P. MD. In Trapped in My Mind, the author shares a very dramatic episode that recently happened to her. It is a treatise to society—that we must open our eyes and listen to the illness that might be lurking within and might hit us badly. If, through sharing, she can change how people perceive or judge just one person experiencing what she went through, she will have achieved her goal. This is why she is sharing her own story, sharing her mind. The events that transpire in Trapped in My Mind are real and have affected many lives, mostly the author’s. About the Author The author, L.P. MD., is a 58-year-old, divorced, female medical doctor. She is slim and very outgoing. Much of her life was raising here kids; she was mom, dad, and provider for about thirteen years. During those days, she felt strong and, many times, weak at the same time. She was struggling a lot to make a living for her family. She was literally working 24-7, living more in hospitals than in her house. She needed to be strong to survive. She never complained, believing that, in life, you need to do whatever it takes to make living worth it.

The convergence of exponential technologies will transform medicine and health care in ways that sounded like science fiction a mere decade ago and dramatically disrupt our very notion of patients, providers, and payers. Healthcare 3.0 takes a look at how technology is set to elevate patients to prosumers, help migrate care delivery from a pipeline-based approach to a platform-based one, and transform our current insurance-based payment system to an outsurance-based system.

It is also an appeal to the Western allies that any more mistake and wrong decision about Afghanistan’s fate may jeopardize the future of “Western Civilization” and validate Afghanistan’s nickname as the “graveyard of Empires”.

The Nature and Dynamics of Family Life by Richard Demeritte If democracy is to survive and its strength are not to be strangled by international and internal chaos, then we must get on with the work of constructively analyzing our family system. Our thinking must be from the concern of quantity, toward attention of quality and from the concept of individuality, toward the concept of interdependence. Planning must be aware of its origin in hope — nurtured by images of the future that we desire. To refuse to hope is an act of disloyalty against our humanity, as hope is always the future now. To hope is to evoke the future.
