Alius logo development
Initial list of logos based on a list of values.
values: label does not ruthlessly promote their artists in order to make money from their identity (exploitation) label houses a large amount of sample based music, seen as musical resampling and recycling Music is generally bass heavy, hybridisations of genres of music - e.g. Dub and garage.
Logo development
Subcycle logo, not working. Don’t want to take this logo name any further because it seems to have a set image which I’m not enjoying experimenting with. visuals exhausted. Time to move on.
“subcycle” hand drawn idea development.
Typefaces/ Helvetica/ Avant Garde &custom amendments
Letters too spaced apart, too much space in the word too much detail taken away
Slight kern.
strong, legible logo counter removed and “I extended.

ALIUS logo developmental. Typographic solutions
Using simple shape combinations and type, overcoming the problem with the word alias, decision to abreviate to ALS. further development will be to spell alias, as aliius.
Typeface is irrelevant
Logo reads: Adidas...
shape aspect is working, too abstract to be a logo.
simpler, effective.
strongest resolution, still unfocused, unclear logo name. Initial digitised design ideas for logo name: Alius. Image/shape is currently not working
experimenting with some custom typefaces: pur type seems to be working more effectively than a mix of type and shapes.

RECORDS Avant guarde. ALIUS logo developmental. Typographic solutions
developmental sketches based on Facet typeface beginning to pick apart type legibility, in order to make the logo more recognisable.
Beginning to define a clear problem with the letter forms and letter spacing.
Alius logo amendments
Typeface: Facet std. the typeface is not legible enough in its original format.
Counter, unneccessary contributes to overall legibilty.
alius Diagonal cut in the counters look unneccessary.
Legibility problem is here.
Cuts removed, creates a more substantial letter form. Problem; not legibile as an “a
Counter removed Letter form now appears too fat.
creates a more aparant lower case a.
Flattened off diagonal cut - less space between letters and giving a uniformity to the overall form weight.
Alius logo amendments
Further amendments were made to the form of the letter S and L in regards to line weight and symettry but produced no better result.
Simple shapes: Circle/Triangle/square. 1 colour, various shades.

03.This is working. The shape compliments the logo & Letterforms. 04.The lightest triangle is appealing, the darker shades interfere with how the logo is read.
Typeface: Facet std. the typeface is not legible enough in its original format.
The logo has to work on a range of scales and formats, this logo is legible as the word alius at different scales but the spiky nature of the letters detracts from the legibility of the type, the negative space is also not working. too complicated, needs development.
Alius logo amendments
Alius original logo amendments Type appears too spiky and becomes slightly illegible when scaled down.
“U” appears 3 dimensional, “LIU” too spiky. Overall the word is too straight and there is too much negative space here.
No symettry, I feel there should be.
Too many diagonals, apparent in the counter.
Counter removed, “A” is a definate problem area of this logo. No counter, appears to look mismatched with the “S”
This chunky blocky lettering reflects the nature of the label better. Urban, chunky music.
Logo simplified, pointed edges replaces by simple shapes. Slightly italicized.
Counter added, same shape as the I’s dot. adds a degree of consistency. Still not working.
S has a more accentuated slant to keep a visual uniformity throughout.
Logo is now beginning to work, but the lower case A sticks out like a sore thumb.
Lower case a adapted to become a quote mark, adds weight to the logo and its meaning.
Bottom diagonal cut reduced to match the top tail, back cut removed for consistancy.
Upper case A adapted from the U to keep a consistant uniformity throughout. Bar of the A taken from the I’s dot. This is now working.
Alius logo amendments
Alius final logo amendments experimental realisations.
Playing on negative space for the dot of the I. Crossbar lowered to create a more appealing counter
I made to match A more closely
L currently isnt working with the overall legibiliy. This is easily adapted
Legibility is now working more efficiently.
Alius logo amendments
Quotation marks removed; needless.
Logo scaling
This logo is one of my favourites that I have done, but It just does not work smaller scale because of the negative space, the negative space conflicts with the type, and at a smaller scale merges together and becomes unreadable.

A more stripped back, and simplified approach. I am now using a simplified shape for the logo as a standalone, and adding sipplementary type, for when the logo needs to be applied to letterheads, business cards etc.
has an edge of simplicity which is appealing, use of a standard typeface adds to the legibility of the logo.
The pictogram works alone, but the type adds a clarity. this pictogram could be used alone on, for example, the 12” and 7” record.
