10 Years! 20 Million Books! And Counting!

On Septem ber 15, a 45-foot long br ight blue, w r apped, tour ing coach pulled up to the Lu ci u s E. an d El si e C. Bu r ch , Jr . Li br ar y in Collier ville, one of the stops on a 50-county, m onth long tour celebr ating ten year s of Dolly Par ton's Im agination Libr ar y in Tennesse. Fi r st Lady Cr i ssy Hasl am and Gover n or 's Book s f r om Bi r t h Fou n dat i on Pr esi den t Th er esa Car l m et w ith local officials, education advocates, and Book s f r om Bi r t h (BFB) suppor ter s inside the libr ar y befor e joining sever al hundr ed childr en and their par ents on the law n. Fr i en ds of t h e Col l i er v i l l e Bu r ch Li br ar y, M am a D's I t al i an I ce, and Rox yw ood Far m s all contr ibuted to cr eating a celebr ator y atm ospher e w hich included food, tr ain r ides, anim als, and face-painting. Tennessee is the only state in w hich ever y child fr om bir th to age five is eligible to enr oll. Locally BFB sends over 39,000 books each m onth to over 60% of the childr en under age five in Shelby County.

Fr om t h e Ex ecu t i ve Di r ect or It had been another typical day at BFB. After a m or ning visit to a W IC office (gover nm ent pr ogr am for Wom en, Infants, and Childr en) at Southland M all, I dr opped by a few pediatr ic offices to gather enr ollm ent for m s collected w hile par ents w aited to see their pediatr ician. After ar r iving at the BFB offices in Bingham pton, I w as visited by a w om an w ho hear d about the Im agination Libr ar y thr ough the Health Depar tm ent Child Safety Seat Pr ogr am . One thing w as clear to m e as this excited new m other beam ed - people love Books fr om Bir th! It is a tr ue honor to be able to ser ve as an inter m ediar y betw een par ents and those that m ake the Im agination Libr ar y possible in Shelby County ? you.

This past year has been ver y r ew ar ding for m e. M ost notably, my w ife and I w elcom ed our son, Am os. He is alm ost a year old, and I have gained a m uch gr eater appr eciation for the effor t it takes to r aise a child. I?ll call it ter r ifically difficult ? absolutely w onder ful yet extr em ely dem anding. Par ents thr oughout our com m unity ar e em bar king on this exciting jour ney ever y day, and the over w helm ing m ajor ity of them w ill enr oll their new baby into Books fr om Bir th. This a positive r eality for the futur e of our com m unity as our childr en w ill not only gr ow up w ith high-quality books in the hom e, but also r eading the sam e stor ies as other kids r egar dless of w her e they live. This ?com m on language? is one of the m ajor benefits of a univer sal, com m unity-w ide pr ogr am , and w e hope that in the futur e w e ar e not the only such pr ogr am in Shelby County, but one of m any.

As w e star t to m ake plans for celebr ating the 10th anniver sar y of deliver ing books to any child in Shelby County, it is im por tant to know that w ith each and ever y new baby w e get a chance to get it r ight. We w ill get a chance to suppor t young par ents thr ough this w onder ful and challenging tim e, to encour age r eading ear ly and often, and to contr ibute to a futur e w her e all of our childr en gr ow up loving the sam e stor ies. I thank you deeply for this w onder ful gift you pr ovide for our childr en, not only as an em ployee of Books fr om Bir th but also as a par ent.

BROADWAY HOSTS BOOKS FROM BI RTH Dan n y Br oadw ay, r enow ned ar tist and ar t teacher at St. Geor ge's Independent School opened his studio to help BFB kick off the sum m er. Guests sam pled w onder ful tr eats fr om For k i n t h e Road Cat er i n g and listened to Josh Th r el k el d play guitar , w hile view ing and pur chasing stunning w or ks. "Explor e Reading", painted by Br oadw ay for the event, w as sold at auction that night and gr aciously donated to BFB.

In Septem ber Gi VE 365 m em ber s aw ar ded BFB a gr ant to fur ther our unique collabor ation w ith Por t er -Leat h 's Cor n er st on e Pr ogr am that helps us r each childr en w hose lack of a per m anent addr ess ham per s their par ticipation in BFB. W ith the gr ant, BFB w ill m ail near ly 250 books each m onth using a per m anent Por t er -Leat h addr ess for these childr en.

Casew or ker s w ill hand-deliver the books to each child dur ing m onthly site visits. Gi VE 365 allow s m em ber s to pool their m oney and, for a dollar a day, to m ake a positive im pact on the com m unity. Gi VE 365 w as cr eated by a gr oup of com m unity leader s and the Com m u n i t y Fou n dat i on of Gr eat er M em ph i s.

Book It 5K - Bigger, Stronger, Faster For the past four year s, Ch u r ch of t h e Hol y Com m u n i on has put on the Book I t 5K, a w onder ful m or ning of fun, benefiting both BFB and the Em m an u el Cen t er . Athletic Dir ector Ju l i e Fi k e and her extr aor dinar y com m ittee pr oduce m or e than a r ace; they br ing together thr ee differ ent gr oups w hich ar e all com m itted to helping childr en have the best chance at lifelong success. Both BFB and the Em m anuel Center eager ly par ticipate in the planning and pr epar ations, alongside num er ous m em ber s of the congr egation. Race day includes the 5K, a 200-m eter dash for childr en, and culm inates in an all-out par ty w ith m usic, food, pr izes, and dancing, w ith both Fat h er San dy Webb of Holy Com m union and Fat h er Col en zo Hu bbar d of the Em m anuel Center leading the w ay! We ar e gr ateful for and enjoy so m uch this par tner ship and ar e alr eady looking for w ar d to the Book It 5k in 2015!
