RISE (Read in Summer and Excel) Countering Summer Slide A Bookworm Central Summer Program for Grades K–8

Project RISE is a DRA-leveled reading initiative designed to counter summer slide among aspiring and vulnerable students. Project RISE, an online selection platform, ensures that all children can easily access and choose “just right” books from a curated selection of titles. The goal of this program is to provide equitable access to books so students may have them on hand to voluntarily read, for practice and pleasure, over the summer.

Why invest in RISE? Provide “Just Right” Books • Pilot Appropriate Actions • Prevent “Summer Slide” Motivates students to keep reading over the summer months and limits the effects of summer slide on their ongoing learning.

Helps schools close the achievement gap for at-risk students, gauge student progress, and quantify the ROI.

Supports the work of educators by countering summer reading/ learning loss among students.

Informs parents about summer slide and engages them in encouraging student participation and efforts.

Learning or reading skill losses during the summer months are CUMULATIVE. By 6th grade, struggling readers will have accumulated a loss of TWO YEARS in reading skills.

Challenges of Summer Slide

How RISE Can Help

An average of 2 months of reading skills are lost over the summer.

RISE provides “just-right” books and direction, helping prevent a decline in skills.

More than half of children in need do not have access to books at home.

RISE brings reading materials into the homes of students in need, encouraging them to evelop regular reading habits.

75% of parents wish they knew more about summer slide from educators and how to mitigate it.

RISE informs parents about the reality of summer slide and engages them to support their children’s reading and learning efforts.

6 weeks are spent every fall reteaching material students forgot over the summer.

RISE benefits teachers when 80-90% of participating students return to school with retained or improved reading levels.

Children who both live in poverty and read below grade level by 3rd grade are three times as likely not to graduate from high school as students who have never been poor.

RISE provides equitable access to books and helps with closing the achievement gap between low and high income students.

73% of children say they would read more if they could choose the books they like.

RISE provides children the options to select books of choice and motivates to keep reading.
