Revision Revision is essential for exam success, so keep in mind:

1 2 3

The objectives of your study session The resources you need e.g. notes, books, Internet Where and when is the best time and place to study

Being organised puts you in control of your life. You are the best person to do it so here are our top tips to help you!

Tips

1. Get started in plenty of time and maintain your focus by creating a revision plan. Take into account all of your commitments, like playing sports or working part-time. 2. Find a warm, comfortable place with good lighting, free from distractions which is most conducive to study. 3. Rather than trying to memorise your notes by writing them out over and over, make your revision active and more memorable by drawing mind maps and making charts. 4. Review past exam papers to get an overview of how the questions are structured and to give yourself some practise at writing your answers. 5. To be most effective, study for no longer than 45 minutes at a time. Allow yourself a short break before starting your next study session. 6. Always allow time for a review of the day’s studying. Repeat for the week and the month as appropriate. 7. Reward yourself for your efforts at the end of every day.

Remember, everyone’s needs are different so think about what works best for you! 123

Time Management The one life skill that will make all others easier to achieve. Try our 8 steps for maximising your time. 1. Get to know yourself: When are you most productive? Where do you work best? Whether you are an early bird at home or a library book worm, become familiar with your body & mind.

2. Prioritise: There will be times when you have to balance coursework, revision and perhaps a job as well. Prioritise your tasks and set yourself deadlines for getting each thing done.

3. Balance: Life is all about balance. That means making time for studying, work, relaxation, eating, socialising, spending time with family and so on.

4. Get Organised: Look at what you have to achieve over the next week and work out how you are going to allocate time for it all.

5. Focus: If you plan to spend an hour studying, remember to stay focused. If you procrastinate for an hour, study time will end up eating into your free time.

6. Develop Habits: Getting into routines will help you make the most of the time you have and enhance your efficiency.

7. Track Time: If you think you’re wasting time, keep a diary for a day or week to see what you’re spending your time on. Be really honest!

8. Limit Time: Sometimes it helps to limit the time we spend on a task. That helps us focus and get the job done.

What’s best for you?

Time to work

• We all have our own peak time of the day, with some of us preferring the morning and some the afternoon – learn to recognise your own best time and use it to your advantage.

• Find the right environment – don’t try to work in a cluttered space.

• Making the most of your time doesn’t mean you always have to be busy. • Learn to recognise what is important. • Don’t take on more than you can do – learn to say no.

• Do the hardest things first, and then you have the best things to look forward to! • Make a to-do list of any assignments or work. • Tackle big projects in small chunks – but start straight away. • Don’t be afraid to say no to friends who disrupt your work time, learn how to deal with interruptions and switch your mobile off.

WRITING A CV A curriculum vitae (CV) is essential in the process of applying for jobs or even voluntary positions. They can be time consuming to draft in the first place but once you have created it, you will be ready to make the kind of applications that are more likely to lead to success. Your CV is a summary of your skills and achievements. It’s a great idea to have an up-to-date CV ready for any applications you have to make. Once you have written a CV, it is quick and easy to keep it updated. Even if you are asked to complete an application form for a job, rather than send in a CV, most if not all of the information you need will be on your CV.

What to include There is no “standard” format for writing a CV but most effective CVs will include: • Personal information: name, address, contact details, your website (if you have one) & any public social media presence you may have (e.g. a LinkedIn page or Twitter account). • Education and training: include the schools/ colleges you have attended and the qualifications and grades attained. • Employment: start with most recent employment experience. Include details about roles, responsibilities and the skills you obtained.

• Voluntary work: include information about voluntary roles and the skills they have helped you to develop. • Hobbies & interests: include genuine ones that have given you demonstrable skills. • Skills summary: not essential but it can be an effective way of highlighting important information about your best attributes. • Referees: it’s a good idea to include the names of two people who would be happy to write references for you. Make sure you ask them first! A college tutor and an employer would be good choices.

Layout & presentation The way your CV looks is important. It needs to be uncluttered and crystal clear. These top tips will help:

• Keep sentences short and factual.

• Type your CV & print it on quality paper.

• There’s no need to include information such as height, weight, ethnicity, marital status or parenthood status.

• Make sure the layout is clear and follows a logical order (for example the order shown on the previous page). • Don’t adorn your CV with pictures / borders.

• Don’t include testimonials from others.

• Remember, it is essential that your CV is a completely honest representation of your skills and achievements. 125

GAP YEAR A gap year is basically the fifteen months between finishing school or college and starting university or work. It doesn’t have to last a whole year – many people go away for a shorter time. Gap years can entail: • Travelling alone or with a group • Doing something structured such as voluntary work or a specific project either overseas or in the UK Who takes a Gap Year? Anyone can take a gap year at any stage of their lives or career, but typically young people aged between 17-25 choose to take some time out of their study and career plans in order to gain valuable experience of life and living.

What can you do? You can do just about anything!

• Gain a skill

• Go on an expedition

• Learn a language

• Do some conservation

• Become a sport instructor

• Teach

• Do a drama course

• Go to a summer camp

• Learn soft skills such as subaqua diving

• Volunteer

…the possibilities are endless!

Where can you do it? You can spend your gap year pretty much anywhere in the world!

126

What are the advantages? The world of work has changed a lot over recent years and it’s likely that your career will have many twists and turns. The multitude of skills and experiences that you can gain from a year out means that the advantages are limitless!

• You will be refreshed and focused when you eventually start your university course or new job • You will be more likely to choose the right course for you and to complete it successfully • You will gain improved social skills • You are likely to be more globally aware • You will gain useful financial skills • You will have enhanced skills of communication • You will be more familiar with risk and with doing risk assessments How can you maintain your critical thinking skills? One of the best ways of making sure that you keep your critical thinking skills sharp throughout your gap year is to keep a learning journal. Keep a record of what you do, what skills you learn, what personal developments you notice and how your experiences will be useful in the future. This kind of reflective activity will be incredibly useful when it comes to starting work or a university course. You may also like to record your experiences on a social media site but this should not be a replacement for a reflective journal.

What’s the key to a successful Gap Year? • Thorough research & careful planning • Talking to people who have been on the projects you are interested in • Thinking ahead about the links you can make with your future plans for study or work

PERSONAL Finance Cash As you think more about what you’re going to do next, money is more than likely going to be involved. Whatever your plans, learning to control your finances now will make life easier for you in the future. The older you get the more independent you’ll become and you’ll be the one who has to earn and manage your money – so why not practise now? To ensure you get the most out of the money you have, think about how to make it work best for you.

• Why not look into getting a part-time job when still at school or college? It will help towards your time management skills too. • When you buy something ask yourself whether you need it or just want it. • Don’t be tempted by mates into spending all your money on things you don’t want. • Don’t take a debit card with you when you go out. Take the amount of cash you can spend and that way you won’t spend too much.

Bank Accounts

Planning

When choosing a bank account, don’t get the one with the best gifts. Instead, choose the one which will look after you and has the best rates of interest. The higher the interest rate when you are in credit the more you will be making on your money. Make sure you set up an overdraft facility if you think you will go overdrawn.

It is a good idea to plan how much money you have to spend on a weekly or monthly basis by comparing your expenditure with your income. Drawing up a budget planner is an easy way to see what you have to spend.
