Skills for life What are “skills for life”? We need skills for life so that we can live happily. They are not just about being able to read & write, although those skills are very important. Skills for life are the kinds of skills which help us to do well at work, to get on with people, to understand money & finances, and to develop self-knowledge. It’s important that the skills we have are balanced. We need to make sure that if we’re great at, say, maths, we’re also great at getting on with people!

Why are they so important? We need to work on skills for life so that we get to thrive in life. That means reaching our full potential and living life with meaning and purpose, as well as enjoying ourselves. We don’t just learn skills for life once and that’s it… these are skills that we continue to perfect all through our lives.

Can you think of any skills for life that you are really good at? There are many life skills that will help us as we go through life. Over the next few pages we’re going to explore six of them:

114

1. Communication

4. Self-worth

2. Social networking

5. Compassion

3. Time management

6. Well-being

Skills for life

1

Communication

We need to be able to communicate well, not just at school but when we are at work and also when we are with family and friends. The more you can develop your communication skills the better. Communication is about what we say and what we write, as well as how we do that. The way we communicate says a lot about how we present ourselves and the value we place on ourselves. We can always improve our communication skills so do ask your teachers if you would like help improving yours. Learning to be comfortable and confident when speaking in front of an audience is a great skill to develop too.

2

Social networking

Social networking on sites such as Facebook and Twitter can be a great way of linking up with others and networking with people already working or studying in the areas you’re interested in. But it’s really important to treat it with respect. Every comment you make online is potentially available for others to see for the foreseeable future. That means that possible future employers may be able to see comments you make now, so it’s important to post only what you would be happy to stand by. Remember there are age limits for some sites.

115

Skills for life

3

Time management

We all have the same amount of time, but some make better use of it than others. If we’re really careful about not wasting time, we can achieve a lot more and still have time left over for our favourite activities. If you have a lot of school work to do, try creating a timetable for getting it done. Make sure your timetable has time set aside for hobbies and relaxation. Giving yourself blocks of time to get tasks done works well and even makes it feel as though you have more time for yourself! It is always a good idea to try and develop your time management skills, so try to explore ways of understanding how you can make the most of your time. Your teachers will be able to help you do this.

4

Self-worth

Self-worth is about having a sense of your personal value. It isn’t about thinking highly or uncritically of yourself. If we don’t have selfworth we may make bad life choices that we may regret later on. Developing self-worth is an invaluable life skill that we need to work on throughout our lives. If we have self-worth, we are more likely to reach our full potential and less likely to make self-destructive choices in our lives.

116

Skills for life

5

Compassion

Compassion is what we feel when others are suffering. It’s an important life skill. When we are compassionate we can help to support others through difficult times. And if others are compassionate towards us, they will help support us if we go through difficult times. If we don’t feel compassionate, we won’t be inspired to help others and that’s not great! When we are compassionate, we get on better with others and seek solutions to problems to help make the world a better place.

6

Well-being

What does “well-being” mean? When we feel a sense of well-being, we are happy about different aspects of life. For example, we may feel happy about our school life, and about life outside school, we may have good health and we may feel confident about any challenges we have. We need to feel a sense of well-being so that we can be the best we can be. We aren’t always in control of our well-being but we can do what we can.

117

TIME MANAGEMENT This is really about prioritising, setting personal goals and managing yourself. Effective time management helps to reduce stress levels – so you win all round!

Being organised puts you in control of your life.

Organisation is the key to success. It helps you to get things done in good time and to a high standard.

Do small things straight away to avoid them building into bigger tasks. By answering emails each morning or simply washing a mug after you use it, you will save yourself time further down the line.

First work out which jobs are really important, then which will be beneficial but aren’t essential, and finally those that can definitely wait until you have some spare time. Do the important things first.

Be realistic when setting your goals – don’t set yourself up for a fall. For example, writing an essay in two hours when you’ve not even researched it will just stress you out! Set yourself goals you know you can achieve in the time you’ve allocated.

Being organised doesn’t mean that you are boring; in fact you’ll end up more savvy, less stressed, and with more time to spare to do the things you love!

Remember that good time management is down to you!

What’s best for you?

Time to work

• When are you most productive? Where do you work best? Whether you’re an early bird at home or a library book worm, become familiar with your body and mind

• Find the right environment – don’t try to work in a cluttered space

• Making the most of your time doesn’t mean you always have to be busy • Learn to recognise what is important • Don’t take on more than you can do – learn to say no

• Do the hardest things first and then you have the best things to look forward to! • Make a to-do list of any assignments or work • Tackle big projects in small chunks – but start straight away • Don’t be afraid to say no to friends who disrupt your work time. Learn how to deal with interruptions and switch your mobile off

REVISION TIPS Preparation is the secret to exam success. Revise properly and you’ll have no worries! Plan

Rest

Plan your revision around your priorities. Which exam is first? Which subjects do you find hardest? Remember to be realistic when planning your time – rushed revision is unproductive revision, so start nice and early.

Believe it or not, it is possible to over revise. Make sure you take a break every 45 minutes and get plenty of fresh air and sleep.

Revise Whether it’s mind maps or revision cards, find out what revision method works best for you. Try revising with friends – listening to their ideas and teaching them what you’ve been learning can be very effective. Revise in a place without distractions and keep notes organised.

Eat well & exercise A good diet is vital, so be sure to eat your fivea-day. Nuts, fish and whole grains are also good brain foods. Drink plenty of water to keep your body and brain hydrated. Get out in the fresh air as often as you can.

Practise Look at past exam papers to know what to expect. After a few weeks of revision, practise them in exam conditions without looking at your notes. Ask your teacher to mark them for you to see if you’re on the right track.

Ask for help It’ll be tempting to revise what you already know. Don’t ignore what you don’t understand! Ask a teacher or friend for help before it’s too late.

It’s during sleep that our brains organise and make sense of everything that we have been learning.

Exam Be prepared! Switch your phone off and have everything you need. Don’t try to revise just before going in. When you begin, read the questions carefully and think before answering. If you’re struggling, leave difficult questions until the end. If you have time, read through your answers and correct any mistakes.

You’re bound to be nervous during the exam period, but if you’ve revised properly then there is no need to worry. If you need more tips on exam stress, visit the Stress Busting website: www.stressbusting.co.uk/how-todeal-with-exam-stress

GRAMMAR Understanding grammar is the key to improving your writing & speaking skills. Noun

Adjective

A naming word.

An adjective describes a noun.

• Common noun = a person, thing or place in general - table, pencil, window.

Comparative

• Abstract noun = a concept or idea that can’t be touched – love, anger, kindness.

A comparative compares one thing to another. • My brother is taller than me.

Pronoun

Superlative

A pronoun is used in place of a noun or noun phrase. There are many different types of pronoun. Four of these are:

A superlative describes the highest degree of a characteristic. It is formed by adding ‘-est’ to the end of an adjective or adverb, or by putting ‘most’ before it.

• Personal pronouns – I, you, he, she, it, we, they

• Today is the coldest day on record.

• Interrogative pronouns – who, whom, whose, which, what…

• That was the most exciting film I have ever seen!

• Possessive pronouns – my, your, his, her, its, our, their…

Adverb

• Indefinite pronouns – all, any, anything, everybody, everything, many, nobody, several…

This is a word used to modify (give further information about) an adjective, verb or another adverb.

Verb

• The very tall runner ran quickly.

Verbs are ‘doing’ and ‘being’ words. These can be active (the action is done by the main person or thing) and passive verbs (when the action is done to the main person or thing). The verb also expresses the tense.

Preposition

• The magician will disappear. (Future tense. Active). • The fish was eaten by the shark. (Past tense. Passive). 120

A preposition tells you the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. These are often a position or motion. • A deer ran across the road and into the woods. • The dog was under the table.

• My house is in a village.

• Mr. (Mister), Dr. (Doctor), St. (Saint).

• He has many friends.

• It’s (it + is), they’ve (they + have), shouldn’t (should + not).

Prefix & Suffix These are added to the beginning or end of a word to create a new word or to change the meaning. • Prefix = impossible, disappear, illogical • Suffix = powerful, enjoyment, teacher

Synonym A word with an identical or very similar meaning to another. • Hot / boiling, massive / enormous, old / ancient.

Clause A group of words usually containing a subject and verb. A main clause makes sense independently. A subordinate clause adds further information but depends on the main clause to make sense. • I travelled the world (Main clause) and met some incredible people (Subordinate clause).

Simile When a likeness is drawn between one thing and another. This is usually done for effect.

Antonym

• The skyscraper was as tall as a mountain.

A word that has an opposite meaning to another.

INTERNET SAFETY The internet is undoubtedly an incredible invention but there are dangers to watch out for. When surfing the net on your mobile, laptop or tablet, follow these golden rules to keep safe.

Protecting Yourself • Keep your address, email and phone number to yourself. Only close friends and family need to know these. • Think first! Embarrassing or revealing social media profile photos can be seen by anyone. If you post on a forum or have a blog, are you happy for anyone to read it? • If someone contacts you or wants to be ‘friends’, ask yourself ‘how well do I know this person?’ before responding. • It’s a good idea to avoid using your full name. To be extra-safe, choose another name altogether. • Keep your password to yourself & choose one that isn’t obvious. Lock your phone with a PIN code & log out of any accounts. • Are you old enough? Some websites have a minimum age (13 on Facebook). If you’re younger they could be unsuitable. • When using a search engine, switch on the safer search filter. Choose words carefully so you don’t see anything offensive.

Protecting your Gadgets • Never download an email attachment from an unknown person. • Make sure you have anti-virus software before downloading anything.

If you want to know more, there’s lots of help out there! www.thinkuknow.co.uk www.digizen.org • Downloading music and films illegally can also result in a virus. • Your phone can get a virus too, so be careful of the websites you choose to visit.

Bullies and Tricksters • Never meet up with someone you met online. They might seem nice in the virtual world, but the reality could be very different. • Ignore strangers who contact you claiming to be in trouble or in need of money. • Ignore people who ask for private information like bank details. A real bank would never ask you to give this information over the phone or by email. • The internet is not the real world. If someone becomes aggressive, don’t get involved! • If you’re bullied, save any messages and tell someone you trust. • Many websites have their own advice on what to do if you feel threatened. Have a look at the Facebook & Twitter help pages: www.facebook.com/help support.twitter.com/articles/20169998reporting-abusive-behavior

If you’re being bullied or are worried about a friend, Beat Bullying and ChildLine are great sources of advice. You can even create an account and talk to a mentor or counsellor. www.beatbullying.org 124

Revision Revision is essential for exam success, so keep in mind:

1 2 3

The objectives of your study session The resources you need e.g. notes, books, Internet Where and when is the best time and place to study

Being organised puts you in control of your life. You are the best person to do it so here are our top tips to help you!

Tips

1. Get started in plenty of time and maintain your focus by creating a revision plan. Take into account all of your commitments, like playing sports or working part-time. 2. Find a warm, comfortable place with good lighting, free from distractions which is most conducive to study. 3. Rather than trying to memorise your notes by writing them out over and over, make your revision active and more memorable by drawing mind maps and making charts. 4. Review past exam papers to get an overview of how the questions are structured and to give yourself some practise at writing your answers. 5. To be most effective, study for no longer than 45 minutes at a time. Allow yourself a short break before starting your next study session. 6. Always allow time for a review of the day’s studying. Repeat for the week and the month as appropriate. 7. Reward yourself for your efforts at the end of every day.

Remember, everyone’s needs are different so think about what works best for you! 123

Time Management The one life skill that will make all others easier to achieve. Try our 8 steps for maximising your time. 1. Get to know yourself: When are you most productive? Where do you work best? Whether you are an early bird at home or a library book worm, become familiar with your body & mind.

2. Prioritise: There will be times when you have to balance coursework, revision and perhaps a job as well. Prioritise your tasks and set yourself deadlines for getting each thing done.

3. Balance: Life is all about balance. That means making time for studying, work, relaxation, eating, socialising, spending time with family and so on.

4. Get Organised: Look at what you have to achieve over the next week and work out how you are going to allocate time for it all.

5. Focus: If you plan to spend an hour studying, remember to stay focused. If you procrastinate for an hour, study time will end up eating into your free time.

6. Develop Habits: Getting into routines will help you make the most of the time you have and enhance your efficiency.

7. Track Time: If you think you’re wasting time, keep a diary for a day or week to see what you’re spending your time on. Be really honest!

8. Limit Time: Sometimes it helps to limit the time we spend on a task. That helps us focus and get the job done.

What’s best for you?

Time to work

• We all have our own peak time of the day, with some of us preferring the morning and some the afternoon – learn to recognise your own best time and use it to your advantage.

• Find the right environment – don’t try to work in a cluttered space.

• Making the most of your time doesn’t mean you always have to be busy. • Learn to recognise what is important. • Don’t take on more than you can do – learn to say no.

• Do the hardest things first, and then you have the best things to look forward to! • Make a to-do list of any assignments or work. • Tackle big projects in small chunks – but start straight away. • Don’t be afraid to say no to friends who disrupt your work time, learn how to deal with interruptions and switch your mobile off.

Some great time management top tips... www.collins.co.uk/page/Revision+for+Students/Student+Study+Skills www.time-management-guide.com 124

WRITING A CV A curriculum vitae (CV) is essential in the process of applying for jobs or even voluntary positions. They can be time consuming to draft in the first place but once you have created it, you will be ready to make the kind of applications that are more likely to lead to success. Your CV is a summary of your skills and achievements. It’s a great idea to have an up-to-date CV ready for any applications you have to make. Once you have written a CV, it is quick and easy to keep it updated. Even if you are asked to complete an application form for a job, rather than send in a CV, most if not all of the information you need will be on your CV.

What to include There is no “standard” format for writing a CV but most effective CVs will include: • Personal information: name, address, contact details, your website (if you have one) & any public social media presence you may have (e.g. a LinkedIn page or Twitter account). • Education and training: include the schools/ colleges you have attended and the qualifications and grades attained. • Employment: start with most recent employment experience. Include details about roles, responsibilities and the skills you obtained.

• Voluntary work: include information about voluntary roles and the skills they have helped you to develop. • Hobbies & interests: include genuine ones that have given you demonstrable skills. • Skills summary: not essential but it can be an effective way of highlighting important information about your best attributes. • Referees: it’s a good idea to include the names of two people who would be happy to write references for you. Make sure you ask them first! A college tutor and an employer would be good choices.

Layout & presentation The way your CV looks is important. It needs to be uncluttered and crystal clear. These top tips will help:

• Keep sentences short and factual.

• Type your CV & print it on quality paper.

• There’s no need to include information such as height, weight, ethnicity, marital status or parenthood status.

• Make sure the layout is clear and follows a logical order (for example the order shown on the previous page). • Don’t adorn your CV with pictures / borders.

• Don’t include testimonials from others.

• Remember, it is essential that your CV is a completely honest representation of your skills and achievements. 125

GAP YEAR A gap year is basically the fifteen months between finishing school or college and starting university or work. It doesn’t have to last a whole year – many people go away for a shorter time. Gap years can entail: • Travelling alone or with a group • Doing something structured such as voluntary work or a specific project either overseas or in the UK Who takes a Gap Year? Anyone can take a gap year at any stage of their lives or career, but typically young people aged between 17-25 choose to take some time out of their study and career plans in order to gain valuable experience of life and living.

What can you do? You can do just about anything!

• Gain a skill

• Go on an expedition

• Learn a language

• Do some conservation

• Become a sport instructor

• Teach

• Do a drama course

• Go to a summer camp

• Learn soft skills such as subaqua diving

• Volunteer

…the possibilities are endless!

Where can you do it? You can spend your gap year pretty much anywhere in the world!

126

What are the advantages? The world of work has changed a lot over recent years and it’s likely that your career will have many twists and turns. The multitude of skills and experiences that you can gain from a year out means that the advantages are limitless!

• You will be refreshed and focused when you eventually start your university course or new job • You will be more likely to choose the right course for you and to complete it successfully • You will gain improved social skills • You are likely to be more globally aware • You will gain useful financial skills • You will have enhanced skills of communication • You will be more familiar with risk and with doing risk assessments How can you maintain your critical thinking skills? One of the best ways of making sure that you keep your critical thinking skills sharp throughout your gap year is to keep a learning journal. Keep a record of what you do, what skills you learn, what personal developments you notice and how your experiences will be useful in the future. This kind of reflective activity will be incredibly useful when it comes to starting work or a university course. You may also like to record your experiences on a social media site but this should not be a replacement for a reflective journal.

What’s the key to a successful Gap Year? • Thorough research & careful planning • Talking to people who have been on the projects you are interested in • Thinking ahead about the links you can make with your future plans for study or work

PERSONAL Finance Cash As you think more about what you’re going to do next, money is more than likely going to be involved. Whatever your plans, learning to control your finances now will make life easier for you in the future. The older you get the more independent you’ll become and you’ll be the one who has to earn and manage your money – so why not practise now? To ensure you get the most out of the money you have, think about how to make it work best for you.

• Why not look into getting a part-time job when still at school or college? It will help towards your time management skills too. • When you buy something ask yourself whether you need it or just want it. • Don’t be tempted by mates into spending all your money on things you don’t want. • Don’t take a debit card with you when you go out. Take the amount of cash you can spend and that way you won’t spend too much.

Bank Accounts

Planning

When choosing a bank account, don’t get the one with the best gifts. Instead, choose the one which will look after you and has the best rates of interest. The higher the interest rate when you are in credit the more you will be making on your money. Make sure you set up an overdraft facility if you think you will go overdrawn.

It is a good idea to plan how much money you have to spend on a weekly or monthly basis by comparing your expenditure with your income. Drawing up a budget planner is an easy way to see what you have to spend.
