Solving Word Problems with Three Whole Numbers Core Skills 1 1.OA.2: Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

A plus sign (+) in an addition sentence indicates that the numbers are added, joined, or combined together.

1+2+3=7

THINK First, add the first 2 numbers: 1+2=3

2 + 4 + 5 = 11

Second, add the sum to the third number: 3+3=7

THINK First, add the first 2 numbers: 2+4=6 Second, add the sum to the third number: 6 + 5 = 11

3 + 3 = 6, not 7. Therefore, the addition sentence is NOT CORRECT.

Because 6 + 5 = 11, the addition sentence is CORRECT.

DIRECTIONS: Circle the addition sentence that is equal to the number in the box.

Using Strategies for Subtracting Core Skills 1 1.OA.4: Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem.

Addition and subtraction are related operations. The relationship between addition and subtraction is inverse.

6+?=9

? + 7 = 11

THINK If we look at the addition sentence, we can read it as “what must be added to 6 to get 9?”. Now, consider the related subtraction fact: 9–6=3 Notice how subtraction “cancels” the addition operation. Thus, the missing number is 3. So, let us try: 6+3=9 We find the answer to be CORRECT.

THINK If we look at the addition sentence, we can read it as “what must be added to 7 to get 11?”. Now, consider the related subtraction fact: 11 – 7 = 4 Notice how subtraction “cancels” the addition operation? Thus, the missing number is 4. So, let us try: 4 + 7 = 11 We find the answer to be CORRECT.

DIRECTIONS: Circle the number that makes the addition sentence CORRECT. 1.
