About:
Kendine Ait Bir Oda (KABO) named after Virginia Woolf’s “A Room One’s Own”, defines itself as a non-profit project which creates space for artistic and cultural events with the inspiration it takes from Woolf’s advice for creative work to flourish; to have a room on your own and free time. The project, which started in the personal workshop of its founder Esra Okyay in 2014, has so far hosted more than 30 interviews/presentations, 4 venue experience meetings, 1 workshop and 15 exhibitions, has continued to organize activities in different districts and venues of Izmir. KABO; whose main goal is to increase the opportunities for communication and cooperation between emerging and established artists, and to initiate new production possibilities; aims to be a platform to create a room for artists, art students, academics and independent cultural actors. www.facebook.com/kendineaitbiroda www.instagram.com/kendineaitbiroda
6x6x6 Aiming to contribute to capacity building efforts on improving urban arts and culture scene in Izmir; the initiative 6x6x6 was founded in 2018 by four local cultural directors, leading various projects on mapping, routing, documenting and event-designing. Between 30th of June and 21st of December, 6x6x6 placed 36 events on 6 routes which varied on urban heritage, contemporary arts, plastic arts, music, photography, cinema, literature, contemporary dance, radio arts, independent publishing, and street arts reaching a number of hundreds of participants en route. During the program in 2018, participants found a chance to explore six different districts in five different parts regions within the city while socializing with contributing artists, curators, directors of the venues, academicians and historians as well as other participants. Thus, this model of routing demonstrated a new way of event designing and creating audience by pinning public parks, beaches, summer houses, cafes, bars, ateliers, bookshops, ferries as potential venues while suggesting frustrated local artists and curators to create or to invent their own venues, instead of demanding spaces from local governments, galleries and culture centres.
As outputs of the program, 6x6x6 left behind an archive consisting 6 videos of 6 routes, 29 podcasts, 6 playlists to accompany the trips and a digital magazine; documenting the whole process and including the evaluation report. During the process, 6x6x6 collaborated with 5 collectives, 7 initiatives and 6 foundations while using 9 public spaces, 7 art spaces, 2 bookstores, 3 artist ateliers, 5 cafes, 3 private flats, 2 shops, besides a tavern, a culture center, an office and a bar. For 2019, 6x6x6, aims to build a permanent network between Berlin, DiyarbakÄąr, Ankara and Ä°zmir, by hosting local the partners from each city to collaborate on collective creation of content, to concentrate on urban heritage while taking immigration, cultural diversity and storytelling on the focus during the project. Mutual study visits between Izmir, Ankara and DiyarbakÄąr will include round table sessions, open workshops, exhibitions, forums, screenings and performances; specifically considering a model for sustainable documentation. For the ongoing process, 6x6x6 will assign KARANTINA; as one of the founder initiatives of this art space. www.6x6x6izmir.com www.facebook.com/6x6x6izmir www.instagram.com/6x6x6Izmir Youtube: 6x6x6Izmir
Dâhilî Bellek*( (internal memory) is a study group with the aim of creating an archive of arts and cultural activities in İzmir, monitoring and tracking unregistered cultural productions of the past, thus contributing to urban cultural memory. Dâhilî Bellek launched, primarily, with the task of documenting and mapping the visual arts venues which had been active in İzmir since the 1950’s. The study; conducted by Özgül Kılınçarslan, Nursaç Sargon and Gökçe Süvari; focuses on creating a traceable history and archive of the art production in İzmir, record-keeping through studies in oral history and establishing a resource centre for the future studies besides bringing together actors and organisations working in the field. Although the main focus of Dâhilî Bellek is the visual arts production in İzmir, it is not limited to that.
