Harley-Davidson® and Marvel Studio’s Captain America Join Forces to Defend Freedom On July 22, two icons of freedom rolled onto the silver screen when Marvel Studios releases Captain America: The First Avenger, who defends freedom and justice for all on a Harley-Davidson® WLA motorcycle. During World War II, Harley-Davidson produced and dispatched almost 70,000 WLA motorcycles overseas to support the war effort. The motorcycle was affectionately known as the “Liberator” by U.S. Service Men and

Women. To celebrate this reunion, Harley-Davidson Motor Company has created the “H-D® Free the World” promotion, which features two grand prizes. One lucky U.S. military member, as well as a non-military member, will each win the opportunity to work with Marvel and the Motor Company to customize their own oneof-a-kind new Harley-Davidson Sportster® 1200 Custom motorcycle in Harley-Davidson’s hometown of Milwaukee, WI. “Captain America makes the perfect marketing partner for Harley-Davidson as he

ride news truly embodies the iconic, heroic and American aspects of our brand,” said Dino Bernacchi, Harley-Davidson’s director of Marketing Communications. “Both Captain America and our motorcycles are great symbols of freedom.” “We’re excited to partner with Marvel given their success in pulling in large, young and diverse audiences,” added Bernacchi. “Big and heroic activations like this build interest and excitement in our amazing sport among potential new customers, so we hope to see some new Captain America fans on the road soon.” Each of the grand prize winners of the “H-D Free the World” promotion will travel to Milwaukee to create the Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom of their dreams at one of the Motor Company’s production facilities. The

promotion also features unique “first prizes” for one U.S. military member, as well as non-military member to attend a Harley-Davidson Academy of Motorcycling Riders Edge® class to learn how to ride alongside a friend. Additionally, Captain America fans can visit their local Harley-Davidson dealers to secure an exclusive poster featuring Captain America on his 1942 Harley-Davidson “Liberator,” while supplies last. Harley-Davidson’s promotional Web site, www.h-d.com/captainamerica, also features behind the scenes footage that was produced in collaboration with Marvel. Legal residents of the United States who are at least 18 years of age can enter the “H-D Free the World” promotion at www.h-d.com/ captainamerica through December 1, 2011.

thunder valley ama race

Thunder Valley was proud to host round 5 of the 2011 250/450 AMA Motocross Series! Unlike any of the other race locations, Thunder Valley is situated well over 5,000 feet above sea level. Toss in the 90-degree heat and these riders had one physically demanding day, not to mention the toll the altitude took on their bikes. Thin air reduces the amount of oxygen available for combustion and the bike doesn’t produce the same level of power compared to being at sea level. However, these challenging conditions didn’t discourage these guys from taking it to the max! Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto won the crown in 450 Moto 1, leading the pack for most of this 16 lap crusade but the real battle took place

on lap 11 between Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey. The two went head-to-head for 2nd place with defending 2010 champ, Dungey coming out on top. But the duel between these guys didn’t end there, taking the fight into 450 Moto 2. Reed starts out strong in 1st place but sadly for him it’s a short-lived victory. Two laps into the race Dungey snatched the lead from under him and held onto it, winning his first outdoor race of the 2011 season. Villopoto took the runner-up position and Reed again is sentenced to third. The day wasn’t a total loss for Reed seeing as he remains number one in the point standings followed closely by Ryan Villopoto. After devastatingly coming in 7th in both races last week, Blake Baggett steps his game up and dominates the track this time around, winning 250 Moto 1 and 2 proving he is a force to be reckoned with! In 250 Moto 1 Justin Barcia who is confirmed to be struggling with a case of mononucleosis led the race through lap 6 until Dean Wilson maneuvered inside and passed the ill rider for 1st. To add insult to injury, seconds later Barcia is then passed by Baggett who in turn blows past Wilson delivering the fastest lap of the race, 2 minutes and 16 seconds. In 250 Moto 2, Baggett breezed to the finish line followed by his teammate Dan Wilson, who overcame Tyla Rattray and is now number one in the point standings. Stay tuned for more AMA motocross race info to find out who will stand victorious! Cara Bien

women’s world Karen Stoffer

There are many of you out there who are active in following the National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) yearly events across the United States. You may have even gone to Gainesville to see this event in March. For those in the “know” with the NHRA, there is a name I’m sure you are aware of; Karen Stoffer, top motorcycle drag racer. If you haven’t heard about this remarkable woman, then sit back and learn about her diverse career with the NHRA. Currently, Karen is number two in points and in contention for the championship. “It’s a tight point count between 1, 2, and 3. I am the only female in the top 10.” What about racing with the guys? “There is no gender separation in NHR Drag Racing. I race against everybody.” How did you get involved in motorcycle drag racing? “It was my now husband/then boyfriend who introduced me to racing. I grew up down the street from Gary. I didn’t start dating him until after I graduated from

btr 6 |borntoride.com

high school. He’s a true motor head! He can work on anything, lawn mowers, car engines, etc. His dad was the head of a car club so racing was really in his blood. He would go out to the local tracks and race.” “I knew when I started dating him that I would be spending a lot of time at the track. In fact, I spent most of my time as a crew chief for Gary. I got to know my way around motors due to my helping him out. One night it progressed to, ‘Karen, would you like to drive?’ So, (I raced a car and then a dragster and moved to motorcycles and have been racing them ever since!”) Karen Stoffer has enjoyed High Speeds, High Performance, and big interest in motorsports most of her life. She has been involved in Motorcycle Drag Racing since 1990 when she was selected as Rookie of the Year at Los Angeles County Raceway. The key to Karen’s racing success is her burning desire to win and the setting of achievable goals. Karen has displayed

definite ability to compete in motorcycle Drag Racing’s highest and most elite class - National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) Pro-Stock Motorcycle. Karen is among the first women to be licensed in Pro-Stock Motorcycle Racing. The evidence is her record of achievements, Class Champion 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1997 with an overall NHRA Division 7 Championship in 1993. She has held the AHDRA National Record and has competition experience in, NHRA, AMA Pro-Star, and NMRA with multiple wins in the very quick Pro-Modified class. Last year, Karen finished in the Top 10 for a 7th consecutive year and earned her first career No. 1 qualifier at her home track at Sonoma, CA. Being the novice that I am about motorcycle drag racing, Karen took the time to explain this to me! “In actuality, drag racing motorcycles are very similar to drag racing cars. It’s the same pro-circuit as cars. There are four different classes: dragster, funny car, pro stock car, pro stock bike class. Pro stock bike class is completely aftermarket bikes except that they have to resemble a specific kind of manufacturer. Four manufacturers are represented in the NHRA: Suzuki, Kawasaki, Harley, and Buell. They allow Kawasaki but there isn’t anyone competing with a Kawasaki, currently.” Karen continued, “You can’t use a standard, off-the-street Harley-Davidson and put it on the racetrack. It won’t be legal or competitive. Our bikes are almost entirely aftermarket. For instance, on a Suzuki, the case is OEM, but everything else is aftermarket. We ride with customized chassis made extra long to accept the power we put to the ground so it won’t flip over. The body is aftermarket and mine was built by AirTech. It is normally made from carbon fiber or fiberglass. It’s made to resemble the manufacturer design. I ride a TL 1000, so the body resembles a TL 1000. Normally a TL1000 would be a V-Twin motor; however, I have an in-line 4 for a motor. I have an aftermarket Suzuki motor, 107 cubic inches and more than 350 horsepower. It leaves the starting line at roughly 2 to 2 1/2 g’s, and covers the quarter mile in less than 7 seconds. Our GEICO Suzuki set the national MPH record in Gainesville, Florida, this past March with a 198.3 mph in a quarter mile. This has since been broken with a 198.5.” I’m trying to imagine what Karen was feeling at her very first race. I can’t even imagine what was going through her mind at this time! “I think because I have been

Geico’s Top Motorcycle Drag Racer around it for so long and I trusted Gary implicitly, I was very calm. He taught me everything I know today. I have full faith and confidence in him. I will admit that I was a little bit nervous the very first time I ever raced a motorcycle. Actually, I was more anxious and excited. I remember Gary telling me, ‘I’m not going to tell you to go out and baby it, just let the clutch fly!’ ” Now, for novice people like me, I had no idea what “let it fly” means! Karen, graciously, informed me what this meant. “Let it fly means letting the clutch completely out with a snap, one full release. I had so much confidence in the bike he had built for me and also knowing that I worked on the bike as well. I was very comfortable. It was the best feeling!” The bike that Karen races does not

shift like our motorcycles. However, NHRA rules state you must manually shift the bike. Normally, we would have to decelerate and shift on a normal bike. But on the drag racing bikes Karen doesn’t have to do that. “I have a button on my handlebar that I shift with. I shift the first 3 shifts within a second of each other. I must be precise. This type of racing is very much a precision type of racing. If I’m 100 rpm above or below where I’m required to shift, I can lose the race! This is all within seconds. In fact, you are shifting the bike 4 or 5 times (depending on what kind of transmission you have) in less than 7 seconds. There is no room for error. Karen and her team are on the road all throughout the year, starting every March in Gainesville, Florida. There are 17 races a season. They end their season in

November in California. “We go all over the United States. The only places we don’t hit in the circuit are the northwestern states.” Karen and her crew are sponsored by GEICO. This is the 8th year GEICO has been a major sponsor for the team. They have a 53’ standard hauler all wrapped in GEICO graphics. Karen has four other crew members including her husband, Gary, who is her crew chief and partner. The team owner and his wife, Doug and Debbie Johnson, and Greg Underdahl, are all individual elements that are vital to the wholeness of the team. “Doug does the computer work on the bike and Debbie is the glue that holds the team together. We have a full team. When I’m not racing, I work for General Electric Company. When I do have to leave for a race, I fly into the races, race, then we fly back home. We are very blessed and fortunate to be a part of this great experience and to be out racing!” Karen has always placed in the top 10. Her focus this year is to be in the top three! So far, they are heading that way! As of this writing, she is in 2nd place! Go Karen! Thank you, Karen, for allowing the readers of Born To Ride an opportunity to learn a little bit more about the NHRA and your successes in the motorcycle drag racing arena! Until we meet again, Susan Hurst Websites: karenstouffer.com Photos by Deborah Johnson

This Just In from Geiger Media: Karen stoffer wins Denver After finishing runner-up three times this season, Karen Stoffer is finally Queen of the Mountain. Stoffer and the GEICO Suzuki knocked out Shawn Gann, Gerald Savoie, Eddie Krawiec and Michael Phillips on the way to victory at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. “Hats off to the GEICO Powersports crew,” Stoffer said. “We’ve been struggling with mechanical problems the last few races. This is a tough mountain to come to and race, and to get where with mechanical problems on top of it is very trying. They did a great job, diagnosed everything, and gave me such a phenomenal bike for Saturday and Sunday. Now here we are!” It’s her first win of the season in four Pro Stock Motorcycle final rounds and her first since the Atlanta race in 2007.

“I was hoping everybody would forget that count but it kept coming up over and over again,” Stoffer said. “But you know what? Patience, fortitude. This is a tough sport. There are awesome teams out there. We knew we had a good team; we just had to work through a lot of issues. Patience, strength, tenacity – that’s what the GEICO team’s about. “I was really not thinking about how long it’s been. Our focus has been on consistency, not the numbers, not the points, not the win lights, but just being consistent. And you know what? We’ve been able to achieve that, and that’s props to the team and the bike they give me.” The GEICO Suzuki had been suffering from a rash of mechanical breakages over the course of the last few races, and even into Friday’s qualifying at Bandimere

Speedway. However, crew chief Gary Stoffer and his team pulled together, got the GEICO Suzuki back to the quick, consistent form it showed for much of the first half of the year and qualified No. 2. “We came out this season with our main goal being consistency and to go as many rounds as available in the race event,” Stoffer said. “Normal goals are to turn on win lights and bring home Wallys and all that. But ours was to be consistent and go down the racetrack as many times as available. If you do that and you do it right, you’re going to get the win lights and the Wallys.” In the process of her victory, Stoffer recaptured the points lead. She is now ahead of Krawiec and can solidify her spot in the season ending Countdown to the Championship playoffs. borntoride.com| btr 7

epstein laying down the law other rules regarding LEDs on your faring, or uppers and lowers. Turns out that MD Ann. Code, Transportation Art., §22-221 provides that: a. The motorcycle cannot have more than two side cowl or fender lamps, in either amber or white, and must be near the front of the bike. b. You can have no more than one running board courtesy lamp and it must be white or amber. c. You can have the so-called “Blue Dot” illumination, but only adjacent to the rear brake light, and not more that ¾ of an inch in diameter. ... Mark Epstein is a biker/lawyer, licensed to practice law in Maryland and Virginia, and taking cases in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and states to the north, south, and west with local counsel assisting. He handles motorcycle and other accident cases, and serious traffic offenses. He’s going to be providing the readers of Born To Ride with a column describing the real truth about questions you may have had on biker law. For any more questions, feel free to email him at eppylaw@aol.com. Check out Mark’s website at markepsteinlaw.com or call 1-800-806-LAWS; he is accepting cases all over Delmarva, and from coastto-coast. THE TRUTH ABOUT LED LIGHTS ON YOUR BIKE “HOPE YOUR FAVORITE COLOR ISN’T RED OR BLUE” There is a lot of speculation out there about what colors are allowed when you’re putting on some fancy LED lighting on your bike. A lot of the custom bike shops are offering installation of colored LED (light emitting diode) in the engine area, running boards, or even the frame of the bike. So I’m here to tell you the truth on the matter. And the “truth” varies from state to state. So, for Born To Ride, let’s take a look at the Delmarva area. Maryland: Good news here ... the law has been broadened to cover just about any light that is installed on the bike to protect the safety of the driver EXCEPT RED AND BLUE LED lights, by making him/her more visible at night to other drivers. There are btr 10 | borntoride.com

d. And yes, you can have LED pods and strips that are added to the bike “to protect the driver” BUT: e. YOU CANNOT HAVE LIGHTS ON THE WHEELS OF THE MOTORCYCLE; AND f. YOU CANNOT HAVE RED OR BLUE LIGHT LEDs. If you’ve got red or blue lights, you can only turn them on when you are parked. ... Item (d) above is a very broad catch all. It would be very arguable to a court that virtually any LED colors added to a bike is for the purpose of protecting the driver. So while a police officer might stop you to question you about your lights, if you’re using a color other than red or blue, it’s very arguable that the stop is unlawful because the officer has to have “reasonable articulable suspicion” that criminal activity is afoot. For the officer to assume that your lights are not there to protect you, and make you more visible to other vehicles, could very well invalidate the stop and anything that happens after that, such as a DUI arrest might be thrown out. Of course, if your lights are red or blue, you’re cooked. … The lights on my own bike are orange, so technically, I’m okay. In addition, your extra LEDs must be non-blinking, non-flashing, non-oscillating (they can’t pan in different directions), and they must be directed toward the engine or drive train (so the lights don’t shine outward and distract other drivers. Of course, many of us just turn the LEDs on when we’re parked at night, for kind of a “light show” on the bike. But if you’re inclined to ride with them on, and

you get pulled over, first explain to the officer that your lights are not red or blue. Then say, “I have these lights on the bike to make me more visible to other drivers, and for my safety.” The officers almost always write down what a defendant tells them in the field in hopes to get a conviction in court. However, if you tell them what I suggest, it will help you get a “not guilty.” I would also very politely ask the officer please note on his copy of the ticket, if he gives you one, that you did explain you have the LEDs on the bike to make you more visible to other vehicles. That makes it okay under the statute, and a judge will likely be sympathetic to that. Finally, it would be a good idea to keep the receipt for the installation in your bike saddlebag. When you get your receipt, be sure to have the vendor write the color of the LED lights in large letters. This would be sure proof to the officer and in Court that you were not violating the “red/blue” light prohibition. My lights are orange, but might look red to a police officer. If I have the installation receipt showing “Orange LED Lights,” that should take care of the problem. I also have an Infinity Kuryakyn LED timing cover that oscillates from color to color. You can set it to a single color when you’re riding, just avoid the prohibited colors. And, of course, you can light up whatever colors you like when you’re parked … so have some fun with it. Virginia: The Virginia Administrative Code, 19 VAC 30-70-360 provides in a “Note” that LED lights with a clear lens (white light) are acceptable if of an approved type. It doesn’t say what is approved and what isn’t. The Code also states that it’s acceptable to have these lights as long as you have more than 50 burning ... go figure on that one. This appears to rule out colored LEDs, since you have to have a clear lens on the LED. Delaware: My Delaware research revealed no statutory provisions on the subject. Now, having said all the above, you may want to consult with a private attorney on the subject before relying on it. I am licensed in Maryland and Virginia, and I do a lot of cases in Pennsylvania, Delaware and other surrounding states with assistance of local counsel. If you have a question, feel free to email me eppylaw@aol.com and I’ll verify the answer for you.

2012 Honda Gold wing

Though fully loaded, the Gold Wing weighs in at just over 900 lbs; believe it or not, it handles as well or better than most Sport Tourers. In fact, the Gold Wing has a 42-degree lean angle. F o r comparison sake, most cruiser touring type motorcycles are capable of about a 31-degree lean angle. What this means is on your favorite winding road, despite the girth of the Wing, it is a terrific handling motorcycle. Though you may think a bike of this size would be a handful at parking lot speeds that’s really not the case since the flat six motor puts

most of the weight very low on the bike. The Wing can actually U-turn in less than 18 feet. Out on the interstate the Wing really comes into its own. You set the cruise control at 80 mph and the bike isn’t even breathing hard. In fact, it’s a good idea to keep your eye on the speedometer or you’ll creep up to 100 mph or more without even realizing it. The Wing is that smooth. This is a motorcycle that you can do an 800-mile day easily with the same comfort you’d experience in most four-wheeled vehicles. With the windshield raised to its highest, the rider is

enveloped in a cocoon of still air. If the weather turns a little too hot, you can open the fairing vents or the vent on the windshield and get a breath of fresh air. The Wing also has vents that open and allow the warmth of the motor’s hot air to keep your lower extremities warm. As stated earlier, on the back roads and the twisties, the Gold Wing is an absolute pleasure.

The Beauties

at Bateman’s

On June 21, the lovely ladies from Maryland Pinup Photographers & Models and Rosie’s Riveters Pinup Team came out to share their beauty at Bill Bateman’s Bistro Golden Ring bike night. The beautiful models came out to pose and mingle with the crowd. Many of the riders were more than happy to volunteer to let the ladies get their pictures taking with them and their bikes.

Pinup models are becoming very popular these days and I’m not complaining. These retro lovelies are a real blast from the past; they have turned many heads at the events this season! I first met the girls from Rosie’s Riveters at the Timonium Motorcycle Show and have since been a fan. Watch for these lovely ladies at many more of the upcoming events. I know I will. Both groups can be found on Facebook. So, if you are an aspiring model who feels this is the avenue you want to explore, or are just a fan, check them out. Also, watch for them in future issues of Born To Ride. Sunnie Sunnie Murphy Murphy

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a

place bathed in American history; if the soil beneath your feet could talk, the stories it would tell. For the past 10 years this historical site has played host to thousands of bikers from all over, giving us four jam packed days of events and attractions! This year the event was held at the beautiful 150 acre Granite Hill Camping Resort. If you didn’t get the chance to join in on the fun here’s what you missed. …

Bikers were unleashed upon the resort bright and early each morning, starting the day with a stroll through Vendor Village. Whether you were looking to buy a new set of leathers, see the latest and greatest creations from some very talented bike builders or wanted to give your monthly insurance payments the one-two punch, it was all within arm’s reach. If you couldn’t find something that caught your interest in the Village, you don’t belong on a motorcycle! btr 24| borntoride.com

One of the most amazing things most of us have ever seen was the Circus Una Motorcycle Thrill Show

featuring trapeze artist Una Mimnaugh and rider Sara Young. Una was trained in aerial arts at Circus Space in London, England, and has been performing for nearly 20 years. Together these fearless ladies became the first all female act to perform these death defying stunts. For their grand finale, Sara impossibly balances the motorcycle high above the crowd on a thin wire with Una hanging from the attached trapeze and this daredevil duo complete several 360-degree rotations with flawless execution. It was truly an incredible site!

Photos by FLash point photography

An event just doesn’t work without the right soundtrack and the organizers didn’t disappoint! The devil made his way to Pennsylvania on Thursday by way of the Charlie Daniel’s Band. Their new patriotic song, “Let Em Win or Bring Em Home,” definitely delighted the flag-lovin’ crowd. The southern rock inspired band Blackberry Smoke, who’s opened for artist’s ZZ Top and Travis Tritt, tore up the stage Friday and bringing the concert series to an end on Saturday was rock legend Kix. This crowd favorite drew at least 14,000 bikers and let me tell you these guys came ready to ROCK! It was unbelievable! If the vendors, bands and thrill shows didn’t get your blood pumping there were plenty of other goings-on including: daily poker runs, hilariously entertaining biker games, tattoo contests, fireworks, burn out pits, a ride in bike show and much more. It was endless fun and I’m exhausted from just re-telling the tale. If you didn’t make it out for Gettysburg Bike Week this year, be sure to clear you calendar for 2012!

Dan Daniels restaurant biker friendly for over 35 years!

Daniels Restaurant & Open Air Bar, ‘Where New and Old Friends Meet.’ For over 35 years, this has been the mission statement of the family owned establishment. What makes Daniels such a staple of the Elkridge community is a mixture of different things. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and attentive. And when walking through the front doors you can’t help but feel like John Wayne moseying in after a gunfight to grab a cold one! It’s just a wonderful mix of great atmosphere and friendly old school service. The founder of this biker sanctuary, Emily Daniels originally purchased the bar back in 1975. She ruled with an iron fist but in this business that’s what it takes to survive. There is a sign you can find hanging on the wall that best sums up Miss Em’s rule and it reads, “Everyone here brings happiness. Some by coming here, others by leaving.” However, the light she is best preserved in is reflected by the name most clientele referred to her as and that was simply, ‘Mom.’ In keeping with the good-hearted tradition of the family, Emily’s son Dan was one of the originators of Motorcycle Operation Santa Clause (M.O.S.C.). M.O.S.C. is an organization that hosts toy drives and poker runs for children at Christmas, along with raising money for the Salvation Army. For several years, Daniels was the starting point for the M.O.S.C runs; many smiles have been brought to the faces of needy children thanks to the tens of

thousands of dollars they have helped to raise. Sadly Emily and Dan are no longer with us but thanks to the next generation of Daniels’ the restaurant is still going strong and maintains the reputation set forth so many years ago. In honor of these two exceptional individuals, Daniels bar holds two annual poker runs in their honor and donates the proceeds to organizations they have supported in the past. October 15, will be the Emily T. Daniels Poker Run. Just like Daniels pride, this poker run is very old fashioned and routed on scenic back roads which has spanned over five counties in the years past. Another grand showing of generosity from the Daniels family is their Veteran’s Day event. Last year, nearly 200 veterans were treated to a FREE dinner and took part in a ceremonial burning of the flag by the Honor Guard from the Knights of Columbus. I’m sure everyone can agree, Em and Dan would have loved to take part in the event but their spirit lives on with each rider who walks in the bar or participates in the runs. If you happen to find yourself with nothing to do, hop on your bike and head over to Daniels Bar. Whether its good food or friendly conversation you’re looking for, you can find it here and you can be sure Daniels will remain rooted in their family beliefs continuing to put up with us bikers for generations to come! Cara Bien

Classic movie Review

In order to understand the true and effectual definition of the word (roustabout), I actually had to do some research. I had always assumed that a ‘Roustabout’ was just a loner that traveled around on a motorcycle, drinking and beating people up. This vision in my mind was likely based on the movie, which I viewed when I was a child. I wasn’t very far off. It seems that the true definition of a roustabout or people that are (roustabouts) are basically un-skilled laborers. The use of this term is common around oil-rigs and carnivals. I suppose now they would just be referred to as laborers. But that enlightenment, as late in life as it came, has little or nothing to do with the movie itself. btr 36 | borntoride.com

Roustabout isn’t really a biker exploitation film per se, but it does give a glimmer of what life was like in the mid sixties, and it does actually feature Elvis riding a 305 Honda in a lot of scenes. Elvis actually DID ride motorcycles, but the lore that follows him rarely refers to this activity. And this one is more of a ‘musical’ / ‘romance’ following in the footsteps of other Elvis films. Hey, you gotta admit – Elvis was mostly notorious for his music, not his acting! Charlie Rogers (played by Elvis) is a musician performing in a “Tea House” which is the 60’s equivalent of a 1920’s speak-easy, or a place that may serve alcohol illegally, or perhaps to folks that are

underage. I base this on a popular term used in the movie. The waitress serving some college kids says “ Well if you see that light come on over there it means that the FUZZ is on the way, and you better ditch the beer and go back to the coke”. I LOVE that term Fuzz. (For you younger folks) It’s a really old term for the Police. I remember once I asked a girlfriend “Have you ever been picked up by the Fuzz?” And she replied “No, but I HAVE been slung around by my tits!!!” Anyway, our hero Charlie sings a great anti-college boy song “Poison Ivy League” to the table of kids. As Charlie leaves, he is confronted by a trio of the Ivy-Leaguers and is fired from the gig after brawling with them in the establishment’s parking lot. He uses Judo to overcome the trio, and is soon arrested by the local Fuzz. After a night in jail, Charlie hits the road on his Honda 305 Superhawk motorcycle and encounters Joe, Maggie and Cathy. Joe runs him off the road, and he crashes through a fence wrecking his bike and guitar. Maggie, a carnival owner offers him a place to stay and a job with her carnival while the bike is being repaired. Charlie becomes a roustabout or carnie, and spends most of his time chasing Cathy around the show grounds. Joe spends a lot of time abusing Charlie but Maggie recognizes his musical talents and promotes him to top billing. His singing and musical act draws huge crowds to the carnival. Off stage, Charlie cultivates a romance with Cathy but after numerous troubles with her pugnacious father Joe and an incident over a customer’s lost wallet, Charlie leaves the carnival to star in the show of rival carnival producer Harry Carver. It is at this juncture in the film that you will once again be reminded that this is a ‘biker’ film when Charlie on a dare, rides inside the “Wall of Death”. Yeah, I doubt that Elvis did this stunt himself, but it is curious to see one of the original barrels from the sixties. It’s still a great show today! Charlie is a great success at Carvers show but when Charlie learns Maggie may face bankruptcy, he returns to her carnival and relieves her financial woes with his earnings from Carver’s show. After yet another fight with Joe, our hero saves the day and in the musical finale, he is happily reunited with Cathy and remains with Maggie’s carnival. If you are an Elvis fan, you’ve already seen this one I’m sure. But if your looking for a hard core biker exploitation film, this really isn’t it!

Motorman’s MEAN STREETS

The Art of the Swerve

When a vehicle violates your right-ofway, either by turning left in front of your path of travel, or pulling out from the right into your path of travel, or swerving into your lane, you’ll have 3 choices. Choice number one is hit the brakes to slow down or stop. Choice number two, lean and swerve. Choice number three, slam into that vehicle. You wouldn’t believe how many riders choose number three. Not because they want to slam into that vehicle, you understand, but simply because they don’t know how to stop quickly enough to avoid a crash since they’ve never practiced maximum threshold braking. And since they’ve never practiced quick swerves, they are reluctant to attempt that maneuver. In my Ride Like a Pro Class, I set up two different types of swerves. The low speed swerves consists of a quick left to right transition, then right to left. Almost all the students and especially the ones who have been riding many years, have a real problem with this exercise. Every one of them will go way too slowly and try like hell to keep the bike straight up during the swerve. In addition, they have a real hard time turning their head and eyes and looking where they want to go. Since a motorcycle was designed to

lean while turning, keeping the bike straight up makes the swerve almost impossible. Believe me, trying to swerve at 5mph is a lot harder than swerving at 10 to 15 mph. After 5 or 6 tries and with a lot of coaching, they finally realize that a little speed or momentum makes the swerve a lot easier. Out on the street, you get only one try. That’s why practicing is so important. The high-speed swerve or counter steering exercise in my class consists of a speed of 20 to 25 mph. The rider must avoid six cones until about the 4th time through the exercise. Again, out on the mean streets you only get one chance to avoid the obstacle. The braking exercise in my course consists of a straight line stop from 20 mph. The stop should be complete in 30 ft or less without locking up either tire. The vast majority locks the rear tire in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd tries and can’t stop within the 30 feet. On the street, you guessed it--you get one-shot at it. The bottom line is, spend an hour or two a week practicing your leaning, swerving, and braking. Do it in an empty parking lot. Don’t wait until that car turns left in front of you at a busy intersection. That’s the last place you want to test your skills. -Ride Safe... Ride Like a Pro Team

Essex MC Field Meet

The Essex Motorcycle Club Field Meet is always a great time— delicious food, cold beer, great people, plenty of vendors, and yes the motorcycle games! Even though it was 100+ degrees in the shade, the games still went on. The turnout was great as usual with groups and clubs from all over Maryland showing their support. The guys from Essex MC once again did a great job of having fun! If you have never been to a field meet you are missing some of

the best fun you can have on two wheels. With games from balloon toss to weenie bite, the competition was fierce. But the biggest surprise this year ... a guy won the weenie bite! Sorry to say girls but he put you to shame! I suggest a lot more practice ladies — so you will be ready for the next one. I hope to see you all at the next Essex MC Field Meet. They say there are two kinds of riders, the kind who have been down and the kind that are going down. Chances are if you spend enough time on two wheels, you are going to be spending some time on the pavement as well. I, like many of you, am not a fair-weather rider. I haven’t always had the money to have two vehicles and when I had to choose, I chose two-wheels over four. I have ridden in rain, hail, and in a pinch, I have even ridden through a few inches of snow. The day I went down, however, it was 80 degrees, and there was not a single

btr 46| borntoride.com

cloud in the whole sky! It was ten o’clock in the morning. I wasn’t speeding. I was on my way to work. I was going through an intersection two blocks from my uncle’s house— where I had just left an intersection, I had gone through a thousand times before. I was enjoying the beautiful weather and the feel of the wind. By the time I saw the GMC Envoy, going double the speed limit, run the red light— it was too late. I was hit broadside by a 4,600 lb SUV. There are two versions of what happened next. The first version is only the facts. After being hit, I flew both forward, to the left, crossed the road in the air, and slammed into an Infinity Qx4 that was pulled over on the other side of the road. The teenage driver of the Infinity, surprised to have me fly into his vehicle, took his foot off the brake and proceeded to run over my foot. Meanwhile, the driver of the GMC Envoy continued to hit the gas until his truck rammed into a pole with my scoot under the frame, holding the Envoys front wheels off the ground. The second version of the story is how I remember it. I never lost consciousness throughout the accident and I remember every

detail as though it was yesterday. As I flew through the air everything slowed down to a crawl. I was spinning as I flew through the air. All I could see were alternating visions of pavement and sky. I closed my eyes and asked God for help. Then almost as quickly as I made the request, the world stopped spinning. I felt two strong arms pick me up and gently lay me on the ground. The doctor later told me he didn’t know how I lived through the accident, but I know the truth ... God sent an angel to protect me. I didn’t walk away without injury. I had three fractures in my pelvic bone and it took some work before I could walk again—but I was still here. In the hospital and throughout my recovery I had tons of help and support from my blood family and the best group of brothers anyone could ask for. I have fully recovered now and I still ride almost every day. Since that day I have gotten married, my wife had our son, and I have a whole new appreciation for life! But without help from God himself, I wouldn’t be here to enjoy any of it. Lucky - Vice President Rugged Cross Maryland Chapter
