Ruppersberger announces legislation to prevent protest during military funerals
“Safe Haven for Heroes Act” Will Prevent Groups from Disrupting Military Funerals (Linthicum, MD) – On March 8th Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger announced new legislation to prevent protests during military funerals. The bill, called the “Safe Haven for Heroes Act,” responds to the recent Supreme Court decision that offensive anti-gay protests at the funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder are protected under the First Amendment. The Snyder family fell victim to Kansasbased Westboro Baptist Church, which believes that God hates the United States for its tolerance of gay people and frequently uses signs bearing statements such as “Thank God for Dead Soldiers.” Westboro has picketed nearly 600 military funerals over the past 20 years. Maryland resident Matthew Snyder, 20, died in a vehicle accident while serving in Iraq. “I am grateful for the service and sacrifice
of our American military fighting for our freedom,” Congressman Ruppersberger said. “The right to free speech is a valuable liberty that we all cherish as Americans. While I respect the recent Supreme Court decision, I wanted to find a way to stop groups like Westboro from using military funerals as occasions to promote their own political agenda and inflict incalculable harm on the grieving families of our troops.” If passed, the “Safe Haven for Heroes Act” will prohibit protests for the 5 hours preceding a military funeral and the 5 hours after. It will also limits protests that do take place to 2,500 feet from the funeral facility. “I believe the Constitution allows for reasonable restrictions on the time, place and manner of protest activities,” Congressman Ruppersberger said. “This bill enables groups like Westboro to exercise their right to free speech without disrupting the funerals themselves or forcing funeral participants to encounter the protesters.” “I thank Congressman Ruppersberger for introducing this bill,” said Al Snyder, father of Matthew Snyder. “At this point, if the courts will not step in to help military families, we need all the help we can get from our elected officials.”
discriminatory motorcycle Checkpoints in Georgia may effect daytona bike week
The state of Georgia has received a $70,000 federal grant to launch motorcycle-only checkpoints in early March, just as Daytona Bike Week is getting underway. For most travelers, their route will take them through Georgia and likely into awaiting roadblocks to check for such things as proper license and current registration, insurance, DOTapproved helmets, EPA-approved mufflers, working horn and lights, etc, etc. “We were informed by unnamed sources that
the Check Points would start in early March to coincide with the Daytona Bike Week event,” said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. “Most points of entry to Florida will be involved, so anyone traveling through Georgia to Daytona might want to rethink their route.” The US Defenders have issued a Call To Action regarding the proliferation of these motorcycleonly roadblocks being funded by NHTSA grants, and are urging the motorcycle community to voice

their opposition to these so-called “Safety Checks” by contacting NHTSA, the U.S. DOT and most importantly by asking your own federal legislators to support H.R. 1498 by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to retain a ban on NHTSA’s ability to lobby State Legislators using our federal dollars through the “Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstration” grant program (DTNH2210-R-00386). “These roadblocks or checkpoints for motorcycles ONLY are being conducted illegally and are discriminatory to say the least,” says Escondido Paul, National Lt. Commander of the US Defenders. “This is one more piece of evidence of the constant profiling attempts targeting our community at large.” ABATE of Florida, Inc. stands with NCOM and A.B.A.T.E. of Georgia in this highly discriminatory action. James “Doc” Reichenbach, II, the President of ABATE of Florida, Inc. and the Chairman of the Board, NCOM, stated upon hearing of these planned
checkpoints; “We are totally against this taxpayerfunded profiling of motorcyclists on both the state & federal levels. The fact that they have decided to implement this potentially unconstitutional action against motorcyclists at the same time they travel through Georgia en route to the well-publicized Daytona Bike Week, simply shows that the government’s true motives are not safety, but the collection of money from a profiled segment of citizens.” We ask that all contact their elected Representatives and Senators in Washington, D.C. and let them know that you are against this discriminatory action against motorcyclists. Florida Toll Road Sued for holding motorist hostage
Federal class action lawsuit against Florida toll roads for unlawfully detaining motorists who pay cash. In February a group of motorists filed a federal class action lawsuit against Florida’s toll road system for detaining motorists who attempt to pay the tolls with cash. About 600 miles worth of toll roads and bridges are under the jurisdiction of The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which hands operational duties over to the private firm Faneuil, Inc., which is responsible for the toll collectors. The complaint charges both firms with false imprisonment and other civil rights violations. “For approximately four years, FDOT and Faneuil have engaged in a practice of detaining motorists and their passengers on the Turnpike System until such motorists provided certain personal information in exchange for their release,” attorney James C. Valenti wrote on behalf of the plaintiffs. “The motorists and passengers have been detained without their consent and without legal justification.” Under FDOT policies, motorists who pay with $50 bills, and sometimes even $5 bills, are not given permission to proceed until the toll collector fills out a “Bill Detection Report” with data about the motorist’s vehicle and details from his driver’s license. Those unwilling to provide personal information to the toll collector are offered no alternative because the toll
collector will not open the barrier, preventing the car from moving forward. FDOT policy does not allow passengers to exit their vehicle, and backing up is illegal and usually impossible while other cars wait behind. Some of those paying in cash object to the idea of carrying the SunPass toll transponder on privacy grounds, but the use of cash is discouraged because it increases operating costs. “The policy of detaining motorists without their consent and without legal justification extended throughout the Turnpike System and was so permanent and well settled that it constituted custom, practice or policy which has the force of law and rises to the level of deliberate indifference to plaintiff’s and class members’ constitutional rights,” Valenti wrote. “It is believed that Defendants will continue the widespread practice of unlawful detentions and will continue to force vehicle occupants to provide personal information in exchange for their release, all in violation of plaintiffs’ and class plaintiffs’ Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.” An estimated 262,800 drivers have been detained since October 2006. The lawsuit seeks an injunction prohibiting Faneuil and FDOT from further detaining motorists. Neither FDOT nor Faneuil has answered the February 8 complaint Rogue Sturgis Freedom Fighters

Safety Check
Check your safety equipment before you ride this season, This includes your helmet. … Rider Safety techniques instructors teach: before you mount your iron pony and leave the stable perform a simple walk around safety inspection on your bike. This includes checking tire pressure, tread depth, lights, blinkers and brakes--making sure all are in operable order. Check for loose wires and loose connections; make sure bolts and nuts are snug. When you take the time to do the safety check for your motorcycle include your personal safety gear. New riding season, long winter - ask yourself these questions: When is the last time you put on your old winter riding jacket? When’s the last time you got your rain suit out of the bag? How old is your helmet? Can you see out of the visor? Last issue we talked about what riding leather should do for you. Check to make sure zippers and snap downs are in working order. Does your jacket not zipper? Maybe you ate too much of Aunt Sally’s cheesecake at holiday dinners. Does your leather look cracked and dried? Do you need to apply a leather cleaner and conditioner? Check your riding gear,
btr 6 |borntoride.com
maintain your gear or replace it if necessary. Do the same check for rain gear, which gets used less often than your leather. Is it in good shape, seams all still intact and waterproof? Have you gained so much weight that the balloon will burst when you zip it up? Or have you lost a lot of weight and your suit will puff up in the wind? Nothing is worse than a rain suit that does not keep the rain out, for whatever the reason. Check it, fix it or replace it. Its more than style, it has to meet certain safety checks, feel good and look stylish. Now the most important facet of the personal safety equipment check is the helmet, brain bucket, skid lid - whatever you want to call it. It singularly is the most important piece since; it covers the only head and brain you will ever get. Franchised dealers sell street legal D.O.T. approved helmets. That is what you should be wearing at all times; you are only jeopardizing your safety if you don’t. Statistics will show you the difference--you don’t need me preaching about it! When you purchase a helmet it should be fitted by a sales associate who can perform basic safety checks. It should have passed the following requirements: • • • •
Snug fit, sitting just over the eyebrow With Y-strap secure- little to NO lift Little to NO forward roll Little to NO movement when you shake your head side to side
If your helmet does not meet these criteria you have the wrong type, style or size helmet for your head. Manufacturers suggest helmets should be replaced after 5 years of use, or immediately if it has been in an accident or dropped. Helmet interiors are made of energy absorbing material, meant to take in energy and the interior degenerates as it performs its function. EPS (Expanded Polystyrene, impact absorbing interior) over time UV rays, adhesive components aging may lead to decreased performance and lead to a safety risk when worn. The Nutshell about helmet shell composition:
Most of you know and heard of terms such as polycarb, fiberglass and Kevlar. I will explain the differences and add a few more composites for you to explore. Most helmet manufacturers use similar composites they might just have them trademarked under different names to protect their brands. The shell material will play an important factor in the price of the helmet, the actual weight of the helmet and strength. Thermoplastic ~ This material is a hot plastic polycarbonate injected into a mold, it then hardens. This process is fairly simple and results in an less expensive product. Upon impact against a hard surface this plastic will flex, so to meet DOT it usually takes a thicker impact liner – end result a large circumference shell. Fiberglass ~ This shell composition involves layers of fiberglass cloth inside of a mold, filling the mold with resin and then heating the material to bond the layers together. This process has multiple steps and adds to the costs of the products. Fiberglass has proven to be very strong in other industries; you are family with fiberglass in boating, automotive. Hybrid-Ultra lights ~ Latest technology has given us almost a full ounce (17%) lighter shell with a composite named Aramid injected into fiberglass. This result is a thinner impact liner, smaller and lighter shell; you will see the price jump for this type of technology. Carbon/Kevlar® ~ This shell is constructed very similar to the fiberglass layering process. The difference being the cloth is made from very tough carbonized Kevlar®. This material is superior in strength and durability. The result is a thinner, lighter weight by 20%. These helmets will be more expensive than less complex composites. You can do your own helmet check or come in and let an experienced sales associate perform a free safety check … it’s your brain bucket and your brains. P.S. last season the law enforcement crews have learned to recognize the difference between a ‘REAL D.O.T.) and a self applied D.O.T. sticker. Which will it be helmet safety check, new helmet or a ticket? Till next issue “Get ready to ride safe”

WOMEN’S WORLD
Julie Compton
It’s always refreshing to be able to talk with people that have done the same things in life as you. Having self-published two successful books myself, I was excited to be able to speak with another woman who has done the same ... Julie Compton. Julie is an author who has penned two successful books. Her first book, Tell No Lies, and her second book, Rescuing Olivia, have already gained a superb reputation. In Rescuing Olivia, a Florida biker sets out on a search against time to find and save the woman he loves when she mysteriously disappears after a suspicious motorcycle accident. It’s a definite page-turner and one that has received some critical acclaim! In fact, here are some pretty nice reviews about Rescuing Olivia: “A lovers’ motorcycle day trip to a secluded spring in the Ocala National Forest turns into quite a ride for readers in Rescuing Olivia, the intriguing sophomore effort from Orlando newcomer Julie Compton . . . Along the way, a colorful cast of characters helps [the protagonist] battle the bad guys as he discovers the wrenching details of domestic abuse and experimental memory-blocking drugs that ultimately lead him to complete the puzzle that btr 8 |borntoride.com
is Olivia.” -Fort Myers News-Press “Rescuing Olivia is an absorbing novel, sharp, tightly plotted and sexy, with strong, believable characters and an emotional edginess that sets it apart. If the mystery/thriller genre is your forte, this one’s an absolute page-turner.” –National Public Radio, WGCU 90.1, “Florida Book Page” “Ms. Compton paces the story majestically, giving just enough new information in each scene to raise new questions that pull the reader forward. A fascinating cast of characters deepens the story. And as she does with the people in her story, Ms. Compton also makes each of her major settings – Florida, New England and Africa – contribute mightily to the imagistic and emotional power of the novel. By making a seemingly ordinary guy like Anders Erickson her central character, Ms. Compton goes against the grain of much contemporary suspense fiction written by woman. Most of her peers select a female protagonist, but Ms. Compton does a remarkable job of portraying a flawed yet sympathetic male hero.” -Naples Florida Weekly Julie is a motorcycle rider, too! “When
I started writing this book, I really needed to understand motorcycling more. I didn’t want to have to continually ask the questions to bikers about different facets of this lifestyle.” “I’ve been riding for three years now. I have a Kawasaki Vulcan 500cc. I love this bike. Eventually I want to get a bigger bike. But for now, it serves my purposes fine. My daughter has already told me she wants to ride this bike.” Julie took her MSF courses and purchased the bike when she was in the middle of writing Rescuing Olivia. “When I started writing the book, I realized that I didn’t know what I was talking about. I asked people that rode motorcycles certain questions. It wasn’t the same when someone is trying to explain something to you and you actually doing it yourself. So, I started taking the MSF lessons and I in the back of my mind, I considered this research for the book. Once I started the classes and riding, I was hooked!” Julie added, “Everywhere you look here in Florida there are motorcycles. It isn’t like that up north in Pennsylvania where we are originally from. When you’re surrounded by this it makes you want to do it! I remember watching our neighbors up in Pennsylvania getting ready to leave for Bike Week. I couldn’t understand how they could do it because it was so cold and nasty! Now, I have a better understanding of the culture and love it!” Rescuing Olivia came out last year in the United States. You can go to any bookstore and ask for this book (and I highly recommend it!) or go online and get it from there. “There is a site called Indie Bound (www.indiebound.org). If you go there you can find my book. I like to promote and support independent book sellers.” Julie has talked to many people about the future of her book writing skills. “Many people have told me that they see a sequel for Rescuing Olivia. I have already started a sequel for my first book, Tell No Lies. So I’m sure that there may be a possibility of a sequel for Rescuing Olivia with the same characters.” Julie is a member of the Orlando Chrome Divas. “I ride with the Chrome Divas and really enjoy it. What I found out that I really didn’t know about until I started riding was of how many women riders are out there on the road. I was fortunate to be able to find a great group of women in the Orlando Chrome Divas!” Thank you, Julie, for a great interview! And for those of you reading this article that love reading as much as I do, you MUST get a copy of Rescuing Olivia. It’s a great page-turning, suspense-filled, well-written book! Until we meet again, Ride Safe and Free!

At the age of 7 Ralph Navar was diagnosed with polio. Since then Ralph has had limited use of his legs. Ralph always longed to ride motorcycles. Because of his disability he could only enjoy the ride as a passenger. About 10 years ago Ralph began looking for a solution. Initially someone suggested he get a bike with a sidecar. Ralph was not interested in the side car at all. “Reminds me of old war images and guys flying out of the side car, it’s almost comical”, said Ralph. Ralph’s first trike was a Goldwing; as soon as he saw this bike he found his solution. They modified the bike to all hand controls. Ralph enjoyed riding this trike for the last 10 years, but always felt he wanted something a bit more custom. “I just felt like I needed something with a bit more pizzazz,” Ralph exclaimed. Recently the Goldwing needed a new tire. While waiting for the tire, Ralph saw a 2008 Big Dog
... at that moment he knew what he wanted. He immediately started looking into Trike conversion kits for the Big Dog. Eventually he called Big Dog and they suggested Frankenstein Trikes. Ralph contacted Frank at Frankenstein Trikes and Frank obliged-- so Ralph purchased the bike. The next day he loaded it in a U-Haul and delivered it from El Paso, Texas to Frankenstein Trikes in Pleasanton, Kansas. Frank and Ralph spent most of the day discussing how to accommodate Ralph’s needs for hand controls. Measurements were taken and a swing arm was designed. The Frankenstein 38” 250 rear end was used for this conversion. Components of the rear end were polished and chromed. The swing arm, fender brackets and fenders were sent to Scott Thomas for paint. They came back a perfect match ... graphics and all! The forward controls were rendered useless and removed. Custom made foot pegs
were added to give Ralph a more comfortable riding position. The rear brake line was tied into the front brake master cylinder. Both rear and front brakes are controlled by the front brake lever. Frankenstein Trikes’ “POWER STEER” Triple Tree was installed. The additional 7 degree rake rounds out the look and makes the bike easier to steer. Ralph loves his new trike. Ralph said, “I’m constantly getting a thumbs up and head turns from other riders.” In spite of his disability, Ralph believes he can do anything. He always inspires others to do the same. Ralph’s ambitions are not limited to the road; Ralph is also a private pilot and had his plane fitted with hand controls. Ralph believes there are no limits, anything can be done with just a few modifications to accommodate a person’s disabilities. His ambition and Frankenstein Trikes ingenuity are evident in this one of kind Trike. borntoride.com| btr 13

MOTORMAN’S TEST RIDE
It’s been several years since I’ve ridden a Goldwing. While it’s true the basic Goldwing introduced in 2001 hasn’t changed much since I last rode one, and there’s no 2011 model at this time; I felt it was time to take possibly the last ride on a GL1800. In fact, Honda moved all motorcycle manufacturing from Marysville, Ohio back to Japan. The rumors I’ve heard which have not been substantiated by Honda is a 2012 model will be released in 6 or 7 months from now. There’s been no word on what type of changes will be on the 2012. My guess is, and this is just a guess, the motor will be increased to a least 2000cc and some type of automatic transmission will be offered. As for the 2010 Goldwing,
btr 18 |borntoride.com
though it’s been produced for several years now, it’s still at the top of the heap of luxury touring motorcycles. Its only real competition has been the BMW LT1200. Honda now offers four separate Goldwing models. The Goldwing audio comfort package features an 80 watt stereo, heated grips and a heated seat; MSRP is $22,899.00. Next up is the Goldwing Audio comfort Navi XM. In addition to the premium stereo and heated seats, this model also offers XM radio, tire pressure monitor and a navigation system; MSRP $25,399.00. Next up is the Goldwing Audio Comfort Navi XM ABS model. ABS is of course, the antilock braking system; MSRP is $26,599.00. Last, but not least, the Goldwing Air bag model; MSRP is $27,999.00. While this all may seem like quite a mouthful, Honda claims the packaging for 2010 actually simplifies the long list of options available. Keep
in mind that even the basic Goldwing Audio comfort package model, the least expensive of the four, is a fully equipped touring motorcycle. This bike comes with a manually adjusted windshield, a wheel type adjustment for both the clutch and brake levers, an extremely comfortable rider and passenger seat, five-speed transmission and of course, the 1800cc flat six cylinder liquid cooled motor. This motor puts out approximately 100 hp and 120 ft lbs of torque. This makes the Goldwing the fastest, most powerful touring motorcycle one can buy. The six cylinders also happen to be the smoothest motor ever fitted to any two-wheeled vehicle. Though fully loaded, the Goldwing weighs in at just over 900 lbs; believe it or not, it handles as well or better than most Sport Tourers. In fact, the Goldwing has a 42 degree lean angle. For comparison sake, most cruiser touring type motorcycles are capable of about a 31 degree lean angle. What this means is on your favorite winding road, despite the girth of the Wing, it is a terrific handling motorcycle. Though you may think a bike of this size would be a handful at parking lot speeds that’s really not the case since the flat six motor puts most of the weight very low on the bike. The Wing can actually U-turn in less than 18 ft. Upon mounting the Goldwing and thumbing the starter, the Wing springs to life with uncanny

smoothness. As you blip the throttle the sound emanating from the exhaust, though subdued, will be music to your ears. Once at cruising speeds the exhaust is barely audible. The Wing does possess (thankfully) quite a loud horn. The rider seat comfort of this bike is unparalleled. The same for the passenger perch. Not only will the passenger have a luxurious seat, the backrest is so comfortable, I’ve been told by some Goldwing owners that their passengers have fallen asleep while riding on the bike. The ride is on the plush side of sporty and is even adjustable for ride height and firmness by a button on the dash. This comes in very handy with the Wing fully loaded with a passenger and luggage; as a touch of the button levels the bike in a matter of
honda goldwing
seconds. Although the seat is only 29” from the ground, it is on the wide side, so riders of less than 5’7” may find flat footing the bike is not possible. On most bikes this would present a problem since backing up an over 900 lb motorcycle would require super human strength. Fortunately, the Goldwing comes standard with a reverse. Again, simply press a button; hold the starter button and the bike backs up with ease. Fully loaded and going uphill in reverse isn’t a problem. The acceleration provided by that smooth six cylinder motor has to be an experience to be believed. Regardless of what gear you’re in,
the Goldwing is never wanting for passing power—that includes fully loaded with a passenger and luggage on board. Out on the interstate the Wing really comes into its own. You set the cruise control at 80 mph and the bike isn’t even breathing hard. In fact, it’s a good idea to keep your eye on the speedometer or you’ll creep up to 100 mph or more without even realizing it. The Wing is that smooth. This is a motorcycle that you can do an 800 mile day easily with the same comfort you’d experience in most four-wheeled vehicles. With the windshield raised to its highest, the rider is enveloped in a cocoon of still air. If the weather turns a little too hot, you can open the fairing vents or the vent on the windshield and get a breath of fresh air. The Wing also has vents that open and allow the warmth of the motor’s hot air to keep your lower extremities warm. As stated earlier, on the back roads and the twisties, the Goldwing is an absolute pleasure. I’m very curious to see what Honda will do with the 2012 Goldwing—as the GL1800 will be a very tough act to follow. While the MSRP may seem high, even for the base model, the Wing offers probably the largest array of standard features of any motorcycle. If you check around there are also some phenomenal deals on the 2010 models. For a closer look at the Goldwing, head on down to Pete’s Cycle Co., 7511 Belair Rd., Baltimore MD or call them at 410663-8556. See their as on Pg.32 Jerry “Motorman” Palladino

Far too often the trip of a lifetime turns into an unmitigated disaster, leading to expensive breakdowns, arrests, lost wages, broken limbs, death, and even, on more than one occasion, divorce. eVille Ink originally opened its doors September 2007 in a nice little spot in Baltimore County. Unfortunately politics and zoning laws forced the shop to close. Tony DeVille packed up the shop, shed a tear for the dream he and his team of artists had, and went to work for someone else. In late summer of 2009 Tony was approached by two friends who were willing to give a small investment. They extended their trust and faith in Tony’s talent; his dream was back on track. From that day forward they have not looked back. They started building DeVille Ink Tattoo and Piercing Company in September 2009. pay, no commission, they did it for the dream. B. Foxx has been with DeVille since day one and had been Tony’s right hand man for almost a year before that. His faith and loyalty to Tony and DeVille Ink really showed through in those weeks. There were several good friends and family members who came by to help whenever they could - no one ever asking for a penny or any kind of reimbursement. Tony’s wife KC and their three boys, Zion, Vinnie and Mouse worked every evening with Tony and B.Foxx to open on their deadline. They did it! DeVille Ink officially opened on September 11, 2009. The partners have changed; Tony, KC and the DeVille family are the owners now. DeVille Ink is still going strong, but have moved to the larger storefront where they reside
today. They have not forgotten where they came from, or the people who have helped them along the way. In keeping with the spirit of not forgetting where they came from DeVille Ink continually gives back to the community that has accepted and welcomed them. Tony and crew have featured $30 breast cancer ribbons for the entire month of October, proceeds were donated to charity. They appropriately were invited to 98 Rock’s Jugs for Plugs during Breast Cancer Awareness month. In December they offered $30 HIV/AIDS Awareness ribbons, with earnings going to a charitable cause. Other notable community highlights for DeVille Ink are:
• Receiving an invitation to join 98 Rock’s Justin live on the air • Attending Outlaw Jam in 2010 and receiving an invitation back for 2011 • Attending the Chosen Sons Tattoo Expo, (and receiving an invitation to go back) • Fox45 news, when doing their Baltimore B tattoo’s in support of the Ravens before the playoffs • Sponsoring and adding to their family Renegade TV, Rock and Rescue, RJ Promotions, Hell Maidens.com, Silvertung, Loose Canon Trio and Anoxia Through all of this, DeVille still lives by the
“We Specialize in You” motto! They are caring, patient, and completely reasonable. They offer superior work, with prices to fit every potential client who steps through their doors. Today, Tony DeVille is still there working as many hours as it takes to keep his new and long time clients happy. B. Foxx has passed being Tony’s “right hand man” and is now Tony’s “right hand manager.” Ady Tattoo is one of their senior artist’s and piercer’s; she has the patience of a saint and the bedside manner of a mom. Bonnie “Bonndage” and Kerri “HotWheels” work the counter; they are always smiling and ready to help anyone who walks in. Mike is the newest member to the DeVille family; he’s learning how to tattoo from Tony DeVille. KC DeVille, “Mama” can be found in the shop at any possible time or
day doing whatever needs to be done to make sure the troops are in order. DeVille Ink has a dynamic team with many friends and family who love to hang out and help wherever possible. DeVille gives love to Al “Uncle Al” Lerner, Ed “Uncle Ed” Clipper, Meaghan O, and the unlimited friends and family who have supported them through the long strange trip. Many thanks go out to Born To Ride magazine; Steve and his staff have been more than welcoming and helpful. DeVille Ink Tattoo and Piercing Company will be around for many years to come. Intersection of Motorcycle History
With 12 million vehicles crowding the highways and byways of L.A., any new garage space is a boon. Make that a boon-boom for bike fans, thanks to the recent Grand Opening of the all new 18,000 sq ft Garage Company. It’s a center for bikes of all flavors, makes, and models - from classics to customs plus the parts to keep them running. After more than 20 years hunkered down in a fraction of that space on Washington Blvd near Venice, CA the Garage Company has made the momentous move to Inglewood. A combination classic bike restoration, custom chopper building, parts and memorabilia museum the Garage Company is the life’s work of Yoshi Kosaka. The story began in the early 1970s and in Japan where a young dental appliance engineer, Yoshinobu “Yoshi” Kosaka, became somewhat obsessed with motorcycles. He didn’t just collect them, he raced them as well. btr 26|borntoride.com

About 25 years ago Yoshi made his way to Southern California, a place he considered the end of the classic motorcycle rainbow. He immediately began searching for vintage bikes at swap meets, junkyards, and the classifieds. It was a time when the oil/gasoline crisis conspired to lower prices on old bikes so Yoshi took what money he could save and invested in “precious metal” -- even if it was a bit rusty. It would prove to be money well spent. By 1986 he was racing in ARHMA events btr 30|borntoride.com
(earning a national title in 1993 in Formula 250) A year later he married his high school sweetheart Kyoko. When she noticed his bikes (150!) were spilling out into their front yard she came home with a key to a small building. His weekends were spent wrenching and organizing his growing parts collection. People started dropping by and bikes started to get swapped. Yoshi didn’t really want to sell his stuff so he and Kyoko printed up some Garage Company t-shirts for the visitors. They sold out in
a flash. Taking it as a sign, a business was born. While originally a source for vintage British, European, American and Japanese motorcycles and parts, the Garage Company also focused on Old School Harley customs, a look they call Retro-Bobber. Yoshi and the Garage Company crew, including their ace fabricator Kiyo, have designed and built more than 40 bikes; each motorcycle is distinctly different. The motorcycles were snapped up by customers across the country

coast-to-coast, and overseas as well. The all new expanded facility, the Garage Company is certain to become a L.A. “must-see” and certainly a point of pilgrimage for motorcycle fans looking for an immersion in history as well as a source for rare motorcycles, past, present and future. Yoshi and Kyoko rolled out the red carpet for longtime customers, friends, and members of the classic bike community. Inside they enjoyed the showroom of bikes, miles of motorcycle reference
books, historic memorabilia and bike apparel. Several icons of the sport showed up including legendary Triumph racer Sonny Nutter along with his beautiful TT bike, veteran custom bike builder Mil Blair aboard his latest creation and Motorcycle Hall of Fame sidecar guru Doug Bingham of Side Striders as well as megabike collectors like Urban Hirsch, founder of Ink Systems. Congratulations go out to Yoshi and Kyoko
and the Garage Co. team for making a major contribution to the sport and helping to put L.A. on the classic motorcycling map as a much needed resource for all vintage bike fans.

TIMONIUM MOTORCYCLE SHOW
After party
Born To Ride and Biker Beauties magazine’s teamed up for the 1st Annual Timonium Motorcycle Show After Party at Magooby’s Joke House. Sons of Anarchy star Emilio Rivera performed with Violet Gray, Tommy Sinbazo, and Tim “The Thunder Walrus” Yarosh. The show was awesome and all the comics were in rare form. Everyone had a great time, including the cast of the FX Series Sons of Anarchy who came out to support their fellow cast member Emilio Rivera. Also in the audience were most of the top bike builders from the Timonium Show. Thanks to all the celebrities who hung out after the show for a meet and greet. I want to thank my partner Mitch for being brave enough to get up on stage with comedian Tim Yarosh. Let’s face it when a comic invites you on stage it’s not because he wants to have an intelligent discussion about sports, someone’s going to get picked on ... Mitch was a great sport about the whole thing. Tim will be at “Bikes To The Beach” Spring Bike Week in Ocean City, MD;

movie Review Vampire Biker Babes
Date night movie under certain circumstances. The Motorcycle Western ran its course as Drive-In and Grand house fare until some moment in the 1980s when home video rental displaced the seedy environs of downtown red-light district and pick-up strip theatres and even drive-ins. With the advent of film on video it wasn’t long before stuff was being shot straight to video in record time for record low budgets and earning record money on investment. Another advancement in marketing was that now all the explicit films and the themed X-Rated fare that was once played on silent 8mm reels at stag parties or with sound in “Art” houses was available to view in the comfort and safety of
your own home. This tossed a wrench into the gears that churned out biker movies. It has come to pass that there are so few biker movies that to be classified as a biker movie it takes only the brief appearance of a motorcycle. I have seen lists that put TOP GUN and Mission Impossible and Terminator 2 in the biker movie category; these are NOT biker movies these are movies that have motorcycles in them. There is a void in this category. Wild Hogs was a great movie and it was everything you would expect from a cast populated by greats like Vinny Barbarino, Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, “Big Momma” Lawrence, that guy from the Fargo movie who sold cars and that other guy from Wise Guys. Was it a true Biker Movie...? Maybe,
if you can categorize Big Momma’s House as a cross-dresser movie. OK, Peter Fonda was in Wild Hogs at the end. So yes, as weak as it is as an example of the true Biker Movie genre, it has Peter Fonda going for it. In 2007, the same year that Wild Hogs was released, Vampire Biker Babes debuted as a Florida biker movie. It is just that, but not JUST that. While this movie has some violent scenes and, I think, might be a buzz-kill as a date night film, it is a hoot to watch. It is full of places that anyone who has scooted about Florida will recognize but the shooting was so clever that the places become wonderfully fresh; like how the east coast of Florida was transformed in Body Heat. You get a great feel for the area without really knowing where you are. --- OK, you will recognize the interiors of some great Florida bars. In fact the bartender credits in this movie are as crowded as the stunt credits in a Tom Cruise action film. From the movie’s title you get a feel for the story line, there will be Biker Vampires. In this case the Biker Vampires will be Babes. The biker vampire babes are cute to really hot, their costuming is great and provided by Zone D’ Erotica (http://www.zonederoticaonline.com/). It occurred to me, if you did decide to view this movie for date night give your gal an outfit from the very place that did costumes for the film-the evening might work out well. Also, from the looks of it, Zone D’ is a cool place for gals to buy hot riding gear. In the credits the producers acknowledge the over 500 Florida bikers who made this film possible. This is way cool, this makes this a true biker film because true bikers are in it, everybody is in it. The riding scenes, while mostly straight road scenes, are good because of the sheer numbers of bikes. There is a short moment at a sprint car short track so you get a small taste of racing. It left me wanting more. AND I wanted to see a prolonged chase scene, but then I always want to see chase scenes. The cast is not well known; there are no well-known actors in this film except for one cameo appearance by Born To Ride Magazine Publisher and Born To Ride TV Executive Producer, Ron Galletti. Galletti nails his part because he is a mass of raw talent and he was ... he was playing himself. Vampire Biker Babes has a well thought story line and is a modern mix of high-tech graphics effects and green screen sets. Made for bikers, by bikers in Florida. How can you go wrong?

Motorman’s MEAN STREETS
Crash Avoidance
I read somewhere recently that 99% of the crashes most riders get involved in are avoidable. While that may seem a little hard to believe, it just may be true. Let’s look at the most common motorcycle crash which of course, occurs when another vehicle violates your right of way. This usually happens as you approach an intersection and a vehicle turns left in front of you. It also occurs when a vehicle pulls out from a side road into your path, but let’s look at the left turning vehicle first and how to avoid the crash since your actions should be pretty much the same for both scenarios. Here are the best ways to avoid a crash in these situations. First, look at least 12 seconds ahead of your motorcycle. Your eyes should be scanning from left to right and up and down. The sooner you see the potential hazard, the more time you’ll have to react. Second, since most crashes happen in an intersection, slow down when approaching one. Cover both your front and rear brakes as you get closer to the intersection. Position your bike to the left side of your lane. If you’re going to have to swerve around the left turning vehicle, your swerve will usually be to the left around the back of the vehicle and then quickly back to the right. However, most of the time in that situation, your only course of action will be to stop quickly using both your front and rear brakes. That’s why it is so important to practice emergency braking using both brakes. The average rider never does practice braking, consequently, in that situation, the average rider slams on the rear brake, locks the tire and skids right into the vehicle. Even if he misses the vehicle, he still slides onto the ground. Either way, he crashes for no reason. By looking way ahead of your motorcycle, you’ll be able to anticipate the actions of that vehicle and be able to apply your brakes long
before it becomes an emergency. If you spend just a few minutes a week practicing emergency braking, you will lessen the chances of locking the rear wheel dramatically. The second most common motorcycle crash involves only the motorcycle--it’s called failure to negotiate a turn. What usually happens is the rider gets into a turn and suddenly believes he’s going too fast to make it around the curve. Maybe the rider hears the pegs start to scrape. Since he’s not familiar with that sound, he panics, straightens up the bike, then looks at the yellow line in the road, the guard rail, or even the oncoming vehicle and a crash occurs. In over 600 cases of failure to negotiate a curve studied, in every case the bike was capable of making the turn at the speed the rider was going, the rider was not. So, how do you avoid this crash? It’s simple. Learn to use head and eyes properly. When rounding a curve to the left, position your bike to the right side of the lane and focus on the end of the turn and nowhere else. Never, never, look at the yellow line, the guard rail, or the oncoming car. If the road curves to the right, position your bike to the left side of the lane as you enter the curve. In addition, find your bikes’ limits in a parking lot at 5mph where the worst that could happen is a simple tip-over. The bottom line, practice makes perfect. Learn to use your head and eyes properly. It is the key to safe riding. Learn to use both your front and rear brakes and keep them from locking so you very well may be able to avoid 99% of the crashes you’re likely to be involved in. At the very least, you will minimize injuries to yourself and damage to your bike. Don’t be an average rider who depends on dumb luck. Instead, practice and Ride Like a PRO. -Ride Safe... his year at the Timonium Motorcycle Show a new award was presented to one special person. The prize winner not only won a beautiful trophy, but also a very special prize, a write-up about their bike in Born to Ride magazine. This year’s Annual Born To Ride Magazine Publisher’s Choice Award winner is Jannette Cole, with her 2009 Suzuki GSXR750 Michael Jackson Tribute Bike. Jannette started riding in 1982. Her 2009 Suzuki GSXR750 is her third motorcycle and she knew she wanted to have a custom build but she wasn’t exactly sure of the paint she wanted. When the late Michael Jackson passed away she knew she wanted her paint job to reflect her love of Michael and his music. Ron Roth of Eye Candy Cycle Designs (www. eyecandycycledesigns.com) in Riverside, California completed all the customizing for her bike. Ron sent Born To Ride the list of what Eye Candy did for her bike. 1. Chromed the frame and sub frame 2. Chromed the forks 3. Designed and manufactured the Eye Candy Cycle Designs chrome single sided 240 swing arm 4. Installed Eye Cady Cycle Designs Air Ride Suspension System 5. Customized the gas tank to install pop-up gas cap 6. Modified gas tank to mold in a 7 inch LCD touch screen 7. Mold in a Video IPOD with charging unit and USB connection in tail section 8. Built custom fiberglass overlay on air intakes to mold in alpine speakers 9. Installed Grip Ace Digital control system to eliminate switches on bars 10. Custom grips 11. Custom RC Components wheels 12. Custom Stingray and Ostrich seat 13. Eye Candy Cycle Designs chrome spike kit that includes wind screen bolts, frame sliders, fork sliders, fork top covers, center nut cover, and rear wheel center cover 14. Custom show lights including wheel lights from Custom Dynamics When all the customization was completed by Eye Candy Cycle Designs, Jannette contacted Peter Frechette in Maryland. Jannette told Mr. Frechette she wanted a tribute paint job to Michael Jackson. She discussed the images of the late Mr. Jackson that she wanted to portray and Mr. Frechette created the ultimate murals. Peter Frechette’s work can be seen on his website www.frechetteartwork.com. Ms. Coles said of all the motorcycle shows she competed in, Timonium Motorcycle Show was, by far, the warmest reception she has ever experienced. She enjoyed answering questions from the crowd. She was very surprised to win a new class trophy of Publisher’s Choice Award presented by Born To Ride Delmarva magazine. She also took first place with the People’s Choice Award with a cash prize of $300.00. She was surprised again when she won 2nd place in the “Radical” Metric Class. On behalf of Born To Ride magazine I want to thank Jannette Coles for taking the time to share her beautiful bike and her story with us. Also, thanks to all the participants at the Timonium Motorcycle Show this year. ... without your creations there would be no award. See you next year!

CHRISTIAN MOTORCYCLists ASSOCIATION
I was enjoying the wind in my face and the sun on my back. It was the warmest day of the year and I was taking advantage of the great weather here in Florida. Suddenly I heard a regular rhythm that sounded like a chain hitting a bell. I had never heard a Harley make this kind of sound before and as I listened I thought “Wow that sounds like a phone.” Then I woke up. It was 2:30 AM and a call from a biker friend who said she was being admitted into ICU. My wife spent several hours with her today. She had spent the day in Lake City; on her btr 46| borntoride.com
way home she became weak and had called and said she was unable to ride any further. I called another biker who lives closer to where she was and he and his wife graciously hooked up his trailer and drove up to pick her and her bike up and bring her home. Being brothers and sisters in the biker world, we are here to help one another and to encourage one another. We will drop what we are doing and go and help a friend. That reminds me of the servant attitude we in the Christian Motorcyclists Association strive to have. “Here when you need us.” If we are going to be true to that attitude we will drop what we are doing and help a friend in need. How does this come about on a regular basis? I think of what the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 2:1-5 “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in
humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” Can you imagine having the same attitude as that of Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ is the One who gives that heartbeat to the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Knowing that true heartbeat can really only happen if we open up ourselves to him, if we are willing to ask him to control our lives and give us the love for others that He has. It depends upon our relationship with Him. I know the brotherhood of bikers is strong, but it becomes even stronger when the attitude of Christ Jesus permeates our hearts. Ask any one of us in CMA about this relationship. We will be happy to help you understand how you too can have this relationship with Jesus. Until next month, God Bless you. Keep those tires on the road and the wind in your face. Listen for His voice. Ride Safe! Dave (PK) VanderKlay

help 15 year old cancer patient Hunter Lyons-Stratchko’s Dream Come True
night and have some relief during the day. Due to his unstable conditions, he needs to be monitored at all times for extreme blood pressure changes and seizures. They are also facing the reality of their vehicles being older and having a lot of miles on them, so they are less reliable and need more maintenance and repairs. On a limited income, these increases in bills are a strain on the family. On their wish list for him is a Swim at Home pool that would be able to have a constant warm temperature and allow him to have some physical therapy in a water environment. This is important because physical therapy outside of a weightless environment requires too much energy and strength from him. The other burden on the family’s heart is to be able to take Hunter on trips and to allow him to “live” while he is here. He would like to go on cruises and he would like to be able to take his friends out for pizza or to local sporting events (the Ravens are his favorite team), again he likes to do for others. However, do to the financial burdens of his illness, his family cannot do these things. unter Lyons-Stratchko is a patient of Gilchrist Kids, the pediatric team of Gilchrist Hospice Care. Hunter has a diagnosis of mitochondrial disorder leading to a multi-system failure, expected to end his life within the next six months to a year. On a daily basis, Hunter faces great obstacles just to live. His energy level is very poor and he can only go to school a few hours a day to be with his friends. He does not have the energy to do other activities if he does go to school for a few hours. This limits his ability to hang-out with his friends. Hunter has to take over 40 pills a day, just to try and function. There are other daily procedures he must endure as well. He faces frequent hospitalizations and is now facing surgery to have his colon removed and an ileostomy placed. Even though he is faced with this prognosis, Hunter continues to live as he always has, putting himself behind others. He was recently visited by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to be granted a wish and instead of choosing something for himself, like a cruise, he chose to give his wish to his school. His school, Rosedale Baptist School, will be getting a new building soon that will have a science lab. However, the school does not have the funds to furnish the lab. Hunter chose furnishing the science lab as his wish so that his classmates and those students yet to come would be able to enjoy the lab and learn in it. This is only one example of how unselfish Hunter is and how he is always thinking of others and putting them before himself. The family faces large medical bills routinely for all of Hunter’s needs and doctor’s appointments. In addition to the medical costs, there are other bills affected by his need for medical care, such as gas, car maintenance, tolls, parking expenses, and even their electric bill is affected due to Hunter’s temperature instability. The family is in need of assistance in order to continue to provide for Hunter’s needs. There are some direct costly needs for him. It is very important that his climate be controlled at all times. In order to do this, the Stratchko’s need a separate heating and air conditioning unit for their basement as well as a dehumidifier. Another large need that they have for Hunter is a need for hired skilled nursing care, so that his mom and dad can sleep at borntoride.com|btr 47
