Street Strategies at Work THE SHARK
Imagine a typical scene from a naturenetwork documentary, one that shows a fur seal frantically swimming with a great white shark in ruthless pursuit, the huge snout of the shark filling the television screen. In the corresponding street scene, you’re riding your motorcycle down a wide arterial street when a huge sedan closes in on you, its grille filling your mirrors. Just as you change lanes to get out of this car-shark’s path, the tailgater also
changes lanes behind you. What are your best strategies for avoiding (or evading) this situation? Strategy: As soon as you notice a tailgater approaching in your mirrors, take steps to get out of the way. Activate your turn signal and make an obvious, decisive lane change to the right or left. If the car is already upon you before you notice its presence, take care before making a move to
avoid the “shark pursuit” situation described above. When evading a shark, signal early and pause for just an instant (to make sure that the tailing driver isn’t also planning to change into the same lane) before making a definite and decisive move into the other lane. Your actions should clearly communicate your intentions to the other driver so he is fully aware of what moves you intend to make. www.msf-usa.org

Biker Apparel Report Diamond Gusset Jeans
Many companies today provide quality protective clothing for motorcycle riders. Blue jeans are often the go-to pant for bikers, for their comfort, utilitarian function, and general good looks. Yet often, these offer sub-par protection in the event of an “off.” Several companies offer armored jeans, with sewn-in protection at key points around the garment. Companies like Joe Rocket, Icon, Alpinestars, and Cortech are among those who offer high quality riding jeans. At a recent Great American Motorcycle Show, I had the privilege to meet with David Hall of Diamond Gusset Jean Company, a unique, all-American outfit based in Bon Aqua, Tennessee. Among their many and varied jean styles, they manufacture a “biker jean,” with fantastic features I’ve never seen before in a riding jean. Hall outfitted both Ron Galletti and me with a pair of their “Defender” riding jeans, for the purpose of giving our impressions and suggestions, as well as penning an evaluation for our readers. But first, a little background on this extraordinary American entrepreneur and his company. Hall spent years working for the likes of Levi Strauss and Lee Jeans, during the time when those companies, as well as so many others, were outsourcing their manufacturing to places like Mexico, China, and Indonesia, to name a few. In 1987, Hall had a dream for a completely American jean company, with every fiber, thread, stitch, rivet, button and patch made right here in the States, by American hands, start-to-finish. He also envisioned a unique diamond-shaped crotch design, known as a gusset, for better durability, comfort and movement. For motorcycle riders, this would prove to be a tremendous selling point. Hall struck out to pursue this dream, with no “seed money” or bank financing. In an era that has seen many companies fold, move offshore, or sell out, DG has stayed true to their vision—a superior constructed and supremely comfortable jean that is entirely American made, with the fantastic BTR 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM
gate fees, etc. A nice touch. A Velcro ankle strap can be pulled over to secure the pant securely around boots, with no “ride-up.” I also like the extra right side lower pocket, perfect for a knife, small tool, or notably, my iPhone 6s. The Defender is available in blue and black, a wide range of sizes, and comes in Women’s cut and sizes as well. I’ve spent the past few months with my pair of DG jeans, wearing them in all kinds of conditions. I’ve been riding in them almost daily, on short commutes and long days in saddle, wearing them around the office and around town, and working in them indoors and outside. Heck, I’ve even copped a few afternoon naps in them. My wife has washed them for me numerous times, and the jeans are retaining their color, with no noticeable fade, and virtually no shrinkage. The jeans remain very comfortable, with no fraying or coming apart at any seams, no wearing thin at the seat or knees. Superb manufacturing. Out on the road, the Defender remains supremely comfortable to wear. I do not experience the typical, how shall I say, “binding in the subterranean regions”, causing to me “adjust” from time to time while riding. A welcome change from regular jeans. For comparison, I have owned a pair of Cortech DSX armored riding jeans, for about 10 years. They have been among the best riding jeans I have ever owned. And yet, I find the DG Defender more comfortable and functional than even my DSX jean. I really like this pant. If I were to offer any improvement suggestions to Diamond Gusset, I think I’d diamond gusset crotch concept. And they recommend the option of an inner pocket have continued to grow. The perfect riding in both legs for knee pad inserts. After jean? We decided to take the challenge. the three knee surgeries I’ve had over the The Defender jean, DG’s “100% American years, I’d certainly make use of them. The Made Biker Jeans” as they bill it, contains seat pockets could also be about a ½” numerous features that set it apart from deeper for folks with larger wallets or cell other riding jeans on the market. The hips, phones, common today. Other than those knees and seat contain double-stitched, two observations, I’d say Hall and Diamond military-grade Kevlar protection. DG sews Gusset have hit a grand slam with the in a right-side metal D-ring for key clips, Defender jean. a nice feature I use daily. Castles and Motorcycles
Castles and motorcycles seem like a natural fit together. When I think of castles, I think of fairytales, medieval times, and horses. And of course, steel horses too. Riding your motorcycle to the various castles or castle like buildings in Florida, and traveling down scenic back roads to get there seems like time well spent. This route that I put together, is for you to ride at your own pace. It is not a structured guided ride but one to be enjoyed whenever you feel like taking off and exploring. This ride is part two of a
became the first Ripley’s Believe It or Not. 3) Castillo de San Marcos is a fort like castle built in 1672. It is one of the oldest forts in the United States. It is part of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Open to the public, you can explore this great landmark. 4) Zorayda Castle was built in 1883. This is a Spanish style castle, housing artwork and furniture from the era. It is open to the public. For more info call 904-829-9887. 5) Fort Mantanzas Castle was built in the
The route starts out in St. Augustine on the east coast. From there you will travel to Ona in central Florida. I have taken the time to make sure your travels are by back road, and no freeways. All roads are paved. Scenic and slow, instead of fast and furious. I hope you enjoy this ride that will eventually end up in my new book, “Scenic Rides To Florida Destinations.” It will soon be available with all my other scenic riding guide books at www.finzfinds. com. Keep current with new books, ride destinations, road condition updates, and
three-part ride that will be in my new book. This section covers six castle like structures and goes from St. Augustine FL to Ona FL. Most castles are in the St. Augustine area, so I figured this would be the best place to start. 1) Castle Ottis was built in the late 1980s to early 1990s. The castle was built to resemble a medieval castle from over 1,000 years ago. It is available for private tours by appointment. For more info call 904-824-3274 2) Castle Warden (Ripley’s Believe It or Not!) was built in the late 1880s. It was turned into a hotel and visited by Robert S. Ripley in the late 1940s. It eventually was selected to house his collection, and
early 1740s by the Spanish. Its purpose was to guard the Mantanzas Inlet. It is part of the Fort Mantanzas National Monument. Open to the public, you must take a short 5-minute ferry ride to get to the castle. 6) My favorite castle though, happens to be in central Florida. It is Solomon’s Castle in Ona. Howard Solomon built his castle to showcase all his unusual and brilliant sculptures. There are daily tours, but you can still enjoy the grounds without taking the tour. There is also an outstanding “Boat in the Mote” restaurant with home cooked meals, where you can dine in a boat like structure, or on the outdoor patio. If you only plan to see one of the castles, don’t miss Solomon’s Castle.

Craven Moorehead Notable Quotations and Interesting Facts
Regarding food and beverage: Every time I hear the word sugar, I get a lump in my throat. ~ Groucho Marx OZ and JC do a radio show every Monday in the afternoon. Over the weekend, OZ had visited a friend’s house for a BBQ and was subsequently bitten by a dog. This was a topic of conversation at the top of their radio show. Naturally, a lot of people were requesting songs with the word ‘Dog’ in them. Later in the afternoon, via the chat module, ‘Trailer Trashy’ requested “Dog Eat Dog” by Adam and the Ants. So OZ says, “I wonder where the drugs are that made this crap sound good back in the ‘80s”! So TT fired back “I think you can get them at the corner of Fletcher and Nebraska Avenue.” I’m not a drug user, but for some reason I couldn’t remember that Adam and the Ants did that song. I guess research is everything, but for some people (such as
myself) it seems redundant and somewhat boring. Actually, Ted Nugent does that song but Adam and the Ants have their own unique take on it. … JC comes into the shop from the radio studio and in the middle of idle conversation he tells me “you can buy a breathalyzer at Walgreens” to which I replied, “Why would you want one anyhow, you don’t drink!” He just laughs but the thought of purchasing a personal breathalyzer intrigued me for a moment. But only for a moment because should I purchase one of those things, I’m pretty sure that no matter what time of the day or night I were to use it, it would likely go from 0 to 60 faster than a Top Fuel dragster – except when I’m driving or riding a motorcycle – at that time I am sober and going faster than the aforementioned dragster. Naturally, after the show we were discussing everything regarding dogs,

including the horrors of South Korea which brings us to the next topic. Remember that truth is stranger (funnier) than fiction, and everything contained in this article are actual facts. Including the ‘Fake News’ segment which follows. The other day, I ventured out to the dollar store with my roommate to purchase some groceries and other household items. In my cart were 3 cans of tuna (brand name redacted) and the cashier stated that there was a recall on this particular brand. She said, “this tuna has been recalled because it may contain human remains.” So I replied, “I was going to feed it to my cats so I don’t think it would matter too much.” Immediately I started into my rant mimicking Charlton Heston hollering out “Soylent Green is people” and other off-color remarks while holding up the green tuna can including “It’s people!” and “It tastes like Uncle Ben!” over and over again, causing a bit of laughter in the check-out line and trust me, every day is obviously an adventure for me! When I arrived home, my roommate looked up the ‘story’ regarding the tuna and discovered that it was totally fake. For those of you that don’t remember the film ‘Soylent Green’ here is a short synopsis: Soylent Green is a 1973 American science fiction thriller film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Charlton Heston. Curiously to me, the film was depicting life in 2022 (a scant 5 years from now) where the 20th century’s industrialization leaves the world overcrowded, polluted and suffering global warming due to “the greenhouse effect” which causes me to think that perhaps former President Obama may have seen the movie. Anyhow, it’s still out there if you want to see it. Or, you can just go shopping with me if you dar. …

Spyke & Mike
Hey there my BTR friends, I must tell you love can be great and love sucks! This month I feel the latter. Oliver disappointed me by not showing up in Daytona to be my companion, protector, and chirp receiver. Mike tried to warn me about the wonderful feelings and terrible let downs of love, but I refused to listen. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m still interested in Oliver ‘cuz he is and always will be my second love. Right behind my daddy, but does Mike really count? Well, long story short, it was a two-night stand: a meet and greet in Gibtown and breaking seed at Quaker Steak & Lube. He never called, texted, or met me before we left for Daytona. At one point I was high on life and looking forward to going. Now I couldn’t care less. Mike was no help saying, “Take it with a grain of salt, another feathered friend will come along someday.” I didn’t want to hear that. I just wanted Oliver. … The days leading up to Daytona were sad for me. I had nothing to look forward to except the same old biker stops, bird tricks, and the millions of Kodak moments I give to everybody else so they can be happy. Not even the weather was cooperating. Little did I know Mike had a surprise for me. After white knuckle riding, a few hours on the I-4 corridor, we pull into the rest area and Mike’s phone rings. I hear him getting directions and making sure everything is set for my appearance. He hangs up and I squawk, “Where are we going? Are you talking to Fred? Is Oliver in Daytona?” He
tells me, “No, but we’re meeting someone else to cheer you up.” I cackle, “Oh boy! Is it one of my longlost dancer girlfriends? Is it an old drinking buddy from West VA that we used to ride with? Is it Tommy with Nuthin’ Fancy and are we doing Freebird at the Broken Spoke in memory of Jimmy Van Zant?” Mike says, “No, that’s what normally happens at Bike Week. This is worlds apart. You have another admirer named Goldie. He’s a feathered friend from another mother. He lives with his human owners, Gail and Lou, in South Daytona. They were very helpful to me when you were abducted last year. We met them on Main Street in front of the cemetery ages ago. Back then you had no interest. All you wanted to do was live the biker lifestyle: ride all day, and party all night. Lately we’ve talked about coming to Bike Week and you two meeting. Then, when Oliver came into the picture a few months ago, I didn’t want to bring the subject up. After he dropped you like a hot potato, I realized I had to be a good daddy and step in. I waited until now because I wanted to make sure everything was perfect. I just couldn’t set you up for another letdown. They’ve been following your stories for years and lately Goldie has been eyeing up the hotties down at Petsmart, flapping his wings and showing off. They think he’s ready for a mate and wanted to see if you were interested.” I screech, “interested? After what I’ve been through, I’m more ready than a NASCAR
Love can be great and love sucks! driver on Sunday. I’m hotter than a firecracker on the 4th of July. And I’m more excited than a fat guy at a buffet. How long until we meet? Should I freshen up now or later?” Mike cuts me off, “Hold on there Spyke. Get a grip on yourself! Stop doing the funky chicken and keep your tail feathers down. You don’t know this bird yet. Let him do his song and dance. Remember this is Daytona and anything can happen, if you let it.” We leave the rest area after our daddy daughter talk and within 20 minutes I was introduced to Goldie. We spent all night together, the five of us just chillin’ and reminiscin’. He turned out to be a nicer, sweeter, and more affectionate parrot than Oliver. Lou talked about how they saw us at Bike Week for many years and that inspired them to have a riding parrot. All night Goldie shared his food and juice with me without ever once being aggressive or demanding. Sometimes he would even come over, nestle up against me, and prune my feathers. I was mesmerized by Oliver but overwhelmed by Goldie. He was so much more of a gentleman that he even gave me his sleepy perch for the night. The next day Goldie and I went cruising on his owners’ golf carts. We had a blast, riding through the neighborhood with everybody waving at us, eating at his favorite restaurant, and making a stop at Petsmart for nuts while parading me around in front of his girly bird friends. Mike treated me to a fun-filled few days with Goldie. But as all things go, good and bad, they must come to an end. Mike packed up the Fat Bird and before taking off, I made an offer to Goldie, Gail, and Lou. “You three are always welcome to an open door and extra perch at our Sanctuary on the west coast.” My new feathered friend graciously acknowledged me with a light beak-to-beak kiss. Mike says to them, “It’s time for us to take it slow and easy but have fun doing it along the way. We’ll see you three soon.” He then fires up the Fat Bird, gets his knees in the breeze, my wings in the wind, and its wheels rolling down the road. SPYKE

Christian Motorcyclists Association Living in Central Florida has one very real benefit for those who ride, a year round opportunity to get out and get into the wind. I know that there are some who won’t go out unless the temperature is a certain minimal level, one that does not involve leather chaps. All I can say is if it isn’t warm enough to get out and ride, just wait a few hours and it will likely warm up to an acceptable level. In the summer there are those who will argue it’s too hot to ride. All one has to do if it is too hot is to splash on some water, and drink down a bottle of the same, and enjoy the wind blowing across themselves as they ride. And when early evening comes, the temperature drops and it is so very pleasurable to enjoy our favorite pastime. About the only time I really dislike riding is in the rain. Hear me clearly; I do ride in the rain, but usually only when I have been caught in the rain during a ride that is underway. If it is a gentle summer drizzle it can actually feel refreshing, and if you find yourself riding into and out of showers, you will often arrive at your destination dry and refreshed!
Then there is the other kind of rain, where the water is pouring down, the wind is picking up, and the lightshow in the sky is in full bloom. I was recently on a lunch run and came out to discover the sky was closing down in dark, wet clouds. It is harder to ride then, not as safe, and the rider must focus more than ever. I believe that riding under such conditions involves a whole other set of riding skills and can be a valuable learning experience. This is especially true when one’s glasses are covered in rain and visibility is down to almost nothing. It is then the rider must have confidence in their riding skills and his or her ability to carefully focus on the road. I have found that rain riding makes me feel more in touch with the bike, the road, and the traffic conditions. One has to trust their instincts and their training to get home safely. In the Bible, in Mark 4:37, it says “A furious squall came up.” While it is true this story is about fishermen in their boat, they had grave concerns for their safety, for their very lives, yet Jesus was peacefully asleep during the storm. He knew that He had everything under control. So it is with our lives, especially during the storms of life, Jesus has it all under control. When we put our trust in Him, He handles the storms we face. He helps us see the way past what may be blocking our vision, and see the sunshine of His grace in our lives!
