Let me begin by saying My family and I wish you all the best Holiday Season ever! May God bless you where you need the blessing most!

This month I would like to share a personal story with you all. When I loss my mother to Cancer at the age of 16 my life changed forever. The pain and anger I felt was almost too much to bear. So I said screw the Ivy League scholarships I’m gonna buy a Harley and ride to California. I landed in Venice Beach and lived in an abandoned Wonder Bread truck. My Venice beach life back then in the late 70’s was life changing, exciting and colorful If you know what I mean. After a few years of soul searching I rode back to Missouri.

Fast Forward I’m 64 now and diagnose with the same type of cancer a few moths ago that killed my mom. It was hereditary and a stark reminder of my early days of riding and the dreaded disease we call Cancer. The negative emotional anchors I experience during my mother’s fight resurfaced and started living rent free in my mind. I knew this was an unhealthy choice and needed to end.

When faced with difficult times I have found riding is very therapeutic. As I rode around town and I recalled my first long distance motorcycle ride to California 47 years ago. During that journey I rode straight through many storms and never waited for the storm to pass. That old feeling of riding through storms and letting the wind eventually dry me out was unforgettable. That joyful winning feeling made me view my current circumstances as just another storm to be ridden through.

My Christian faith began during those Venice Beach days. There was a church called the Crystal Cathedral near bye I attended one lonely Sunday. The pastor was Robert H

Schuller. He had a TV ministry called the Hour Of Power. Remember that guy? That church jump started my faith.

The Cancer has left my body. A recent book I read by Andrew Wommack called “God wants you Well” I attribute to my miraculous healing. A great read for those facing health challenges.

On a lighter note, this month I enjoyed a special police escorted ride for several hours hosted by the St Pete Fools Charities. The ride lasted several hours went from OCC over the skyway and then back through downtown St Petersburg to OCC. Another highlight this month was during the St Pete bike feast I got to Meet Jack Korpela the “Cycle Drag guy.” What a great tube channel he has!

RIDE APPALACHIA

CELEBRATING AN INCREDIBLE 2024 RIDING SEASON!

Throughout 2024, we’ve had the privilege of taking you on a journey through some of the most breathtaking and unforgettable places in Central Appalachia. Each month, we’ve shared articles showcasing the incredible beauty, culture, and opportunities for adventure in our mountains. Now, as the official riding season comes to a close, the vibrant colors of fall have faded, and the leaves lie scattered on the ground, we take a moment to reflect on the remarkable year we’ve had.

When we founded our all-volunteer motorcycle group four years ago, our mission was simple but powerful: to bring motorcycles to Central Appalachia, promote economic development in our small, forgotten coal towns, and show the world that there is no better place to vacation or ride than right here. It’s not just pride in where we live—it’s a conviction backed by miles of riding experience across the country. And we’re here to prove it.

EXPANDING OUR MISSION

What began in 2021 with a focus on iconic routes like the “KY Vipers” and “Dragonslayer Hwy 160” has blossomed into something far greater. As we shared in our June and July articles, we quickly realized the potential to expand our mission and reach even more communities. Today, The Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application includes over 50 meticulously crafted trail routes

spanning 5,000 miles across four states, making it the premier destination for riders seeking the best the U.S. and our Region has to offer. Every trail, every curve, and every mile was built by our dedicated volunteers, incorporating input from local communities and visiting riders alike. It’s this collaboration that makes our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile App so unique. With over 3,600 “Uniquely Appalachian” Points of Interest, painstakingly curated by our team, the app provides experiences you won’t find on any commercial map. Whether you travel by car, motorcycle, or off-road vehicle, our app helps you uncover the hidden treasures of Central Appalachia—all for free!

A TRUE COMMUNITY EFFORT

If you’ve followed our monthly articles or visited us, you already know that phrases like “all-volunteer” and “community effort” are more than just words to us—they’re a way of life. Everything we’ve built was designed to be unique from the ground up, created by riders, for riders. The unwavering support of our sponsors, partners, and contributors has been the foundation of this success, proving that together, we can achieve something truly special.

This year, we welcomed more bikes to the region than ever before. The impact on our communities has been profound, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this possible. To our supporters, visitors, and riders: Thank you for the greatest gift we could ask for, and it means more to us—and the people of Central Appalachia—than you’ll ever know.

JOIN US FOR OUR YEAR-END CELEBRATION

As we close out the year, we invite you to join us for our annual Christmas events. These celebrations are our way of giving back to the small towns we love and honoring those who have gone above and beyond for us in 2024. Everyone is welcome to come and share in the spirit of the season as we celebrate a successful year of riding and community-building.

A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

From all of us at Backroads of Appalachia and the Whitley County Motorcycle Group, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the rider in your family, we have one that’s both priceless and free: the Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application! Thank you for being part of our journey, and here’s to an even more incredible 2025!

“Best Riding in the U.S.! Period!”

NOW IT’S DECEMBER. THE MONTH OF GIVING.

Hello all and welcome to December. It’s been one hell of a year and a bunch of stuff is hopefully done and over with. Time to hope for that clean slate going into the new year.

We have a lot of great memories and events that went by this year and a lot more coming in the year to come. It’s time to reflect on our year gone by and hopefully learn from whatever mistakes we did previously.

November has past and Thanksgiving has hopefully reminded us of what we are to be thankful for. It’s a time to be thankful for the things we have no matter how small they may be.

Now it’s December. The month of giving and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. A time where we really should go out of our way to show what true humanity and caring is all about. Even though this should be a full time thing, it seems more prevalent this time of year. Why wait til New Years to pledge to have a larger heart and be more Caring and kind to others when you can start now.

A ton of fundraisers go on this time of year and a lot of those rely on your participation and generosity. Try to attend these and contribute to those that truly help others.

Our past year showed a world full of hate and discourse and a lot of people gave up friendships due to difference’s of opinion. Different opinions shouldn’t end friendships. After all it’s what helps form this countries backbone. What shouldn’t be tolerated is unnecessary violence toward those whose views differ from yours. Some of the actions and aggressive comments toward others that were taken towards our fellow man for differing opinions this year were absolutely appalling. Along which these actions we got

to see first hand others bullying those with different views than our own. All the while the mobs stood by and took videos to post of these actions but did nothing to stop it. Disgusting.

This was very prevalent during this years election and with who chose what candidate. It was probably the greatest example of the worst thing a democratic society could do to one another. The public display

“DECEMBER IS The month of giving and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. A time where we really should go out of our way to show what true humanity and caring is all about.”

of pure hatred for a candidate or in this case candidates openly slandering one another, bringing out the worst in humanity. Unfortunately all the while, the whole world was watching. How in hell can this be an example of the world’s light for hope, love and opportunity when all they see is us openly hating one another. This has to change people. There’s enough conflict globally to write volumes of books about. American and her people should not be one if those volumes.

Take the time this month and start to make the changes we want to see in others. Be the example you wish someone should be. Lead others with your actions and not empty words.

Saying we are all just going to pack up and move to the mountains to get away from it all to solve the problem just adds to it and doesn’t fix it. Don’t make the changes needed an empty resolution on next years list. Start now. It’s not to late. Be the change.

For years I myself was considered heartless. Well I found out the hard way that wasn’t true.

We all have one believe it or not. Kindness and humanity towards others helps it grow. Give it a try.

Ride safe on those runs and spread the love if what it means to be a biker. You’ll be surprised at what a difference smiles make. Till next time

CHRISTMAS

Well, I made it through Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and most of Cyber Monday. This was an easy task largely because I had no money to waste on things that I don’t really need. Although the desire is there to spend on the people I care about, it is an impossible feat without the necessary funds. Commercialism aside, there are a lot of valid reasons to enjoy this time of year. If you ignore all the ads, come-ons and deals you can’t live without and then simply focus on what you do have – and not what you want, a certain sort of peace will come over the chaos that roars on in your head and heart. It’s okay to want things, but if you cannot afford those things it’s better to just forget about it and move on. It seems to work well for me, but I’m not suggesting that you should think the way that I do. After all, it is a dark and disturbing place in what remains of my mind!

Originally, we were all taught that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Although the census among the scientific community suggests that the event didn’t really happen during the winter, if it happened at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the ability to practice their own religion. Scientists do not profit at this time of year but the commercial entities certainly do. Some of us simply try to remember the story as told in the Bible and let that be profit enough. (It took me several minutes to decide not to use the word ‘prophet’ in that sentence, instead of profit – levity resides in the aforementioned ‘dark’ areas of my mind.) Although it’s difficult to be comedic at times, if you are me then it just sort of rolls out usually to the disdain of those listening. Thankfully for you, my dedicated readers, you don’t have to hear all the crap because you simply read whatever drivel I put in this column - or you just put it down and not read it – and then make colorful comments about my existence. It’s okay. I’m used to it. …

I think as we get older, some of the magic and mystery of Christmas sort of fades away. The beauty and meaning of the holiday; however, seems to be intensified the farther you progress in life. Once you get past 6 or 7 years old, you begin to not believe in Santa Claus and begin believing in Amazon.com. … I, however, still believe in Santa Claus because every time my dogs come back into the house from the yard they have sandy claws. Plus, I know for a fact that Santa frequents the Gentlemen’s Clubs. I have actually seen him there. Although he didn’t have on the red suit, I knew it was him because he kept bellowing out “Ho Ho Ho” and throwing cash around. The unmistakable long white beard and rosy-red face couldn’t have been attributed to the double vodkas he was drinking, could it? I used to think he only liked eggnog and cookies, and then I remembered that most of the eggnog that I have consumed contained a fairly good amount of alcohol. So, whether you believe in Santa or not, I suppose that it doesn’t really matter. I mean after all, everyone needs to have something to believe in, so I believe I will have another beer!

This particular holiday has a lot of different meanings to a variety of people. I certainly do enjoy it, and of course it would be a lot more fun if I had some cash – but I never worry. I just wish everyone peace on Christmas and remember to do something nice for folks that need it. As bikers, we know how much love is spread around this time of year for those in need. Countless toyruns charitable poker runs and other events are occurring as we speak, and there are scant few days before the actual celebration of Christmas arrives. I appreciate all the efforts of those that give back to the community from behind this keyboard and it’s a blessing that this old-parts computer is still serving me well enough to allow me to send this important message to my readers. Anyhow, don’t think that I am nuts because I still believe in Christ and still give all I have. I also believe that Christmas itself brings people together and when people get together, great things happen! Just remember what the true meaning of this holiday is and do your best to enjoy it! Remember, just a few days after all the presents are unwrapped and the turkey is eaten, we once again gather together to celebrate the arrival of a new year. This is another great holiday because the new year often brings hope and prosperity to those that don’t wake up with a horrible hangover. When we make all those resolutions that we never keep, we can always remember the great times we had with family and friends during this wonderful season. And then, it’s back to work! May God bless you and all your people during this most joyous time of year! Hey! See ya’ll next year and until thenspeed safely!!

The Traveling Entrepreneur: How Curiosity Leads to a Life of Adventure and Success

Living a life filled with adventure and purpose is often something we only dream about, but the key to making it a reality is surprisingly simple: stay curious. Too often, we compromise our dreams for stability, settling into jobs that provide little more than routine. Curiosity is the antidote. It keeps us moving, learning, and evolving in a world of endless distractions.

As a teenager, I took a leap by joining the circus as a drummer, which set me on an unexpected and thrilling path.

The fast-paced, ever-changing lifestyle taught me adaptability and a thirst for new skills. Over the years, curiosity led me from circus stages to becoming a traveling artist, where I found markets I never anticipated, from mural painting on motorhomes to pinstriping at HarleyDavidson dealerships.

Curiosity isn’t just about self-satisfaction; it’s a moral compass. When we’re interested in the world around us, we inspire others by example. Ernest Hemingway once said, “Above all else, a writer has to live an interesting life.”

This philosophy applies to all who seek meaning. By taking risks, embracing new experiences, and broadening our horizons, we become beacons of possibility for others. Curiosity and adaptability have not only kept my career

alive but made it extraordinary. For those willing to follow their interests and say “yes” to life, the rewards are boundless. So, take a risk, chase what excites you, and live a life worth telling stories about.

Ray V. Gordon is The Owner & Founder of Leather Lid Inserts, an established Leather Saddlebag Accessory business based in southwest Florida. They’ve coined the phrase “We take the sag out of the bag” because that is exactly what they do. Ray has been riding motorcycles since he was 14 yrs old and has watched the motorcycle industry grow and is glad to be a part of what it is today. After 35 years of owning and operating a successful aluminum company in Ft. Myers FL, Ray sold the business so he could retire (he thought) and bought himself a new Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. Just like everyone else with leather saddlebags,

his also started to sag and cave in. He saw a need to fix this problem. Ray says, starting this new business was something he just fell into by fixing his own saddlebags and then behold, friends of friends and others witnessed what Ray did and wanted him to fix their saddlebags too. As an inventor and entrepreneur, Ray took his creative background and put his skills to work by experimenting with several different types of materials to finally come up with a patented ABS lid and bag reinforcement kit that would be designed to help keep the original shape of any leather saddlebag made on the market. So, if you’re tired of looking at your caved in leather saddlebags and/or if they are starting to lose their shape and their parts, or if you have brand new bags and you want to prevent them from ever caving in, please keep Leather Lid Inserts in mind. The iconic 1966 film featuring Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, and a cast of hundreds, is one of the most well-known biker exploitation films ever produced. In this classic film the “Angels” a California Motorcycle Club, travel across the state to retrieve a stolen motorcycle belonging to one of the clubs members “the Loser.” Heavenly Blues (Fonda) is the charismatic club president. At times he seems to have to ‘baby-sit’ his troop of fun-loving boozers and druggies.

This one is a favorite of mine, because the producers actually used real Harley-Davidson ‘choppers’ and actually cast some of the real members of the Hell’s Angels. In short, it is one of those films that give bikers in general a ‘bad’ name, but those of us who really know the true way of the biker lifestyle will find it entertaining, and at times hilarious.

The Angels ride through the desert to Mecca, California to look for the Loser’s stolen motorcycle. They accuse a group of Mexicans in a repair shop of stealing the motorcycle when the Loser finds his brake pedal on a workbench. After some mild insults and accusations naturally, a fight breaks out in the shop and the ‘taco benders’ as Fonda calls them wind up on the losing end. The

police arrive, chasing the Angels on foot, and the Loser escapes on a parked police motorcycle. After a chase on mountain roads, one of the officers shoots the Loser in the back, and he later ends in a local hospital.

Blues leads a small group of Angels to rescue the Loser and they subsequently “bust him out” of the hospital. In the melee a nurse is accosted by one of the Angels who knocks her out to keep the cops from discovering their presence in the hospital. The nurse later identifies Blues as one of the men she saw however; the audience knows that it was thanks to Blues’ intervention the assault stopped short of rape. Blues rebukes the member just before the cops notice their ‘suspect’ is gone. Later, the Loser dies at the Angels’ local watering hole from his injuries. The Angels move his body to an undertaker’s office-he demands cash “plus tax.” Using a forged death certificate the Angels arrange a funeral at a tiny church in the Loser’s rural hometown. During the service, Blues steps up to the minister and says those famous words “We just want to be free. Free to ride our machines without a hassle from the man. …” But when Blues says they just want to have fun, the Angels turn the service into a major party. The Angels remove the Loser from his Nazi flag-draped casket, sit him up and place a joint in his mouth. Meanwhile they also knock out the minister, tie him up and place him in the casket.

Later, the Angels proceed to the Sequoia Grove cemetery to bury the Loser. The procession of noisy bikers gets the attention of the locals, who all gather to see the spectacle. One of the local kids throws a rock at the Angels and naturally yet another fight breaks out. This interruption prevents burying the Loser, and as police sirens wail in the background everyone scatters. One of the members begs Blues to go, but he refuses and tells his girl to leave with another member of the gang. This is where the other most remembered phrase comes in, as Blues sighs “there’s nowhere to go.”

The last of the group leaves and Blues picks up a shovel and returns to the grave to bury the Loser.

Just as I was going to call all my boozing buddies over to watch this flick once again, a knock came at the door. I opened it to see a mailman with an overnight package. I signed for it and opened it up, expecting something good. It was just a DVD and a note from the editor of this magazine demanding an immediate review of The Twilight Zone Episode #138 from 1964. This was disappointing news.

In this short film a group of ‘bikers’ if you want to call them that are actually aliens from another planet sent to earth to infiltrate a small town. The local folks actually become fond of this odd cast, and befriend them. Little did they know the space-bikers were there to poison their water supply!

I dunno … I suppose that it was getting late and I drifted off to sleep somewhere after the giant eyeball in the 1950s TV screen requested them to continue with the plan of destruction. This particular episode albeit cute, doesn’t really rate very high up there in the ‘biker exploitation’ world. I guess that’s just because it only exists in The Twilight Zone. …

OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS RIGHTFUL!

We made it to the Christmas season my BTR friends. November was not really good for us as we had to rebuild and reset after two recent hurricanes and me hiding in the closet for Thanksgiving week. Mike and I made it to Roscoe’s Chili Challenge but had problems heading home.

He entered me and the Fat Bird 3 into the anything goes category while there. Me and my scoot won the trophy and Mike won a nail in the back tire leaving on the way to the hotel. But the good news is, it was only flat on the bottom. I think it’s time for him to retire.

Mike breaks in, “Whoa there birdbrain! How was catching a nail in the tire good news and a winner? That damn big ass nail cost me over $500 by the time we got home. The only thing I won was meeting the cool people who helped us at Lakeland HarleyDavidson.

I’m not going to retire but the tire on the Fat Bird 3 did and that money is coming out of your birdie bank because it is your bike! I just haul your feathered ass around on it because you don’t fly and can’t reach the controls!” I squawk, “Are you sure I still had $500 in my birdie bank? I’ve been seeing

you put your hands in there several times this past month!” Mike replies, “yes my funky colored chicken. I’ve been double dipping because the cost of premium nuts and expensive toys has gone way up! I’m wheelie tired of your jokes. Every time you roll them around, I feel so deflated. Now can you please stop with the tire puns. They’re gaining no traction with me!”

I cackle, “all right my Buber (Bird Uber). Christmas is coming up so I wrote you a little jingle about our dilemma. It’s written to the tune of: let it snow

Oh, the weather outside is rightful, Flat tires aren’t so delightful. We are stuck in this motel jail, We hate nails, we hate nails, we hate nails.

The Fat Bird is having troubles rolling, With a nail that it is showing.

Mike is calling h/d for a tire sale, He hates nails, he hates nails, he hates nails.

When we make it back home tonight, It will be cold, late and dark. Because getting a flat really bites, But now the Fat Bird is losing spark. Traffic on I 4 is really biting, We sit in it and he keeps crying.

He whales please just let it spark! We hate no spark , we hate no spark, we hate no spark.

When we make it home late tonight, He’ll dread having to go to Bert’s. And the service line he’ll have to fight, I am sure out of his wallet money will spurt.

Oh, the service line outside is frightful, Misfires aren’t so delightful.

It’s running on one cylinder and won’t go, This just blows, this just blows, this just blows.”

Mike utters, “Thanks for reminding me what I’m in for, my Xmas cackler! Your several nuts over the fruitcake minimum and not the brightest bulb on the tree.

You get to tell Santa what you want and dress up as the 10th reindeer while I get to hang out at the dealership. Now finish your story and I’ll pull the trailer out of the garage. I need to have the scoot fixed for the upcoming toy runs.

Let’s get your wings out the window, my knees under the keys and the Fat Bird 3 stationary wheels rolling down the road on the trailer.”

RONNIE and EMILY’S RONNIE and EMILY’S

CHRISTIAN MOTORCYCLISTS ASSOCIATION

The Christmas season is upon us. One of the first things I think about is a Motorcycle Toy Run. A wonderful memory is seeing a life size bear strapped onto the back of a decorated bagger. Sometimes the driver is even dressed up like Santa Claus. We all know that these toy runs are to provide toys to needy children. It all starts with a large gathering to go on a motorcycle run benefiting the children. These toy runs can be some of the larger events of the year. We all know families that w0uld love help to provide presents for the children. It is fun to go and buy gifts for children that we do not know. The thoughts about if the present will be for a boy or girl come to mind. I wonder how old this child is? Should I get a game, sports item, or something they can use in school? Will that person like what I have chosen?

There is just something about giving a gift. In this season we are often very generous even to those we do not know. Riding my motorcycle to benefit a child that is less fortunate than most is a great reason to get out. There is a festive feeling riding in the cool December air with thoughts of blessing others.

I am thankful that the Lord also gives. We give to needy children and in a like manner, each and everyone of us is also in need. You and I, one day, are going to stand before the King of kings therefore, we are in desperate need of a Savior. God gave

us the greatest gift of all time. He gave us the gift of His Son to stand with us and for us. Let’s read together John 3:16-17 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him”. We have a desire that when we ride and give our gift of a toy, that it is received by the children. So does God also want us to receive the gift that He sent into this world. Jesus has come so that when God judges the world, our gift, Jesus will stand with us and save us from judgment. Through this gift we may receive eternal life with Him. Teach’s Takeaway,

- Each and everyone of us have a need for a Savior.

- God gave the best gift of all time. His one and only Son.

- We each have to receive this gift for ourselves.

- Our eternal life is based on our acceptance of the gift of His Son.

This season, we celebrate the birth of the Savior. He is the only gift we really need. I pray that Jesus makes Himself real to you during this Holiday Season. Ride on.
