THE ONE WAY STREET
You are riding along in the left lane of a oneway street, with a car ahead of you on your right. As the two of you enter an intersection, the car swerves left across your path to make a turn. Strategy: Because traffic was light, the driver may have forgotten that he was traveling on a one-way street and never looked in his blind spot for you. Since there was no traffic in the oncoming lane, he felt free to make a normal left turn (without signaling), inadvertently trapping you in his path. There was no way, short of watching for the non-existent signal, to predict that this driver was going to turn left. But remembering that intersections are always situations of increased risk, you might have prepared for this by taking actions to separate yourself from the other vehicle. By riding so close (and inside the driver’s blind spot) you effectively hid yourself from the driver’s vision and greatly increased your exposure to danger. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

Discreet Personal Security … turn your cell phone into a defensive tool! Literally, 95% of all Americans now carry a cell phone with them on a daily basis.* Specifically, 96% of men, 94% of women … and 100% of people ages 18-29 that were surveyed carry a mobile phone! More people carry a cell phone on them regularly than carry a driver’s license or money. It only stands to reason that some out-of-the-box thinking company would eventually figure out a way of turning your cell phone into a defensive weapon. Enter Stinger Solutions, the developer of the Yellow Jacket Stun Gun Phone Case. This is not a stun gun that is designed to look like a cheap “fake phone.” This is a stateof-the-art phone case that protects your phone and you! Why a Phone Case Stun Gun? “So many people now carry a cellular phone with them it only made sense to develop an effective defensive tool working BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM
off of this type platform,” said Thom Buck, Chief Technology Officer of Stinger Solutions. “If you leave your home without your phone, it is one of the few things people will return for before they continue on to their destination. Even if they are leaving for only a few minutes … they are uncomfortable being without their phone,” said Buck. Mr. Buck went on to say, “One of the first requirements for an effective defensive tool is that it should always be with you. It can’t help you if it is not with you when you need it and most people carry their phone everywhere with them.” In fact, the basic premise for a defensive tool is that certain rules need to be followed to increase the chances of you being able to successfully deploy it under stress. Some of those basic rules are as follows: • The device should be reliable and effective. • It should be something you are comfortable carrying.
• It should be discreet so as to not draw undue attention to it. • The tool should not require a great deal of training to deploy. • Your defensive tool should always be either in your hands or close to your hands. • Ideally, the deployment of the device should be intuitive and not require much thought. This Yellow Jacket has a Nasty Sting! The Yellow Jacket Stun Gun Phone Case is a two piece phone case that your mobile phone locks into. Once installed on your phone, it offers several important features. First, it offers superior protection for your phone. The case is made of a space age material that helps to protect your phone from “drops and bumps.” The case comes with a screen protector and wrist leash as well. Second, it acts as a “battery backup,” for your phone! If you depress a small button on the back of the case, it will immediately
If you would like to become a Dealer for Yellow Jacket, Call: 225-304-6933
begin charging your phone. It will provide hours of additional talk and standby time. This feature alone makes it worth attaching to your phone. Third, it helps to protect you! It does this by concealing inside the housing of the unit a 7,000,000+ volt stun gun. Once you turn on the Stun Gun Safety Switch placing the unit is standby mode, all you have to do is slide the Stun Gun Activation Switch forward causing the electrode prongs to extend out of the front of the phone case. When you then use a separate motion and depress the Stun Gun Activation Switch it will discharge a jarring electrical charge! Simply slide the Stun Gun Activation Switch backwards to retract the electrodes back inside the housing and the Stun Gun is deactivated and returned to standby mode.
All of this can be done with the use of just one hand. Perfect for Motorcyclists! Whether you carry your phone in a pocket, phone holster or on a “mount” on your bike … you now have the perfect defensive tool readily at hand when you need it. Whether you are sitting at a red light and have someone uninvited walking up to you or anywhere else you might need a defensive tool … if your phone is with you why not a Yellow Jacket? Take a moment and visit the Yellow Jacket website at www.yellowjacketcase. com to learn more about this unique and innovative product. Buck explained that they are selling a huge number of Yellow Jackets to motorcycle enthusiasts. “The motorcycle riding community likes the fact that in most places you don’t
need a Concealed Weapons License to carry a stun gun and that it has a highperformance backup battery on the device. It seems like every day we are selling dozens of Yellow Jackets to bikers who like a discreet defensive tool they can count on,” Buck shared. As of this date, the Yellow Jacket is only offered in an Apple iPhone configuration. However, Samsung and other phone configurations are in the works and should be out in the coming months. Contact the Yellow Jacket Company if you have any questions about this unique and patented product … and remember – the future of self-defense is in your hands … Yellow Jacket! Making a positive IMPACT Alexis uses her career to give back From a young age, Alexis always knew that she wanted to be a teacher. It wasn’t until the Youth Ranches turned her life around that she understood why. Alexis came to the Youth Ranch at Safety Harbor in 2010. Her mother had remarried and Alexis and her stepfather never saw eye to eye, which had caused a lot of family problems. The Youth Ranches seemed like her last resort, but what Alexis really found was the support to grow as a person and follow her dreams. “Ever since I was younger, I’ve always sort of known that I wanted to be a teacher,” Alexis said of her blossoming career. “My time at the Youth Ranches helped me to solidify that decision.” She now teaches the fifth grade in central Florida and sees a lot of herself in her students. “I teach in an area with a lot of lower-income families and a lot of kids who don’t have the best lives at home,” Alexis said. “Being at the Youth Ranch taught me how important it is for children to have good role models. A lot of them don’t have good family support, so I’m their cheerleader. That’s the main reason I do what I do.” Alexis confesses there were times at the Ranch when she didn’t understand the point or purpose of the skills and lessons being taught in the cottage. “As a teenager,
I never understood why it was so important that we all had to gather together at night for daily skill lessons, or even the cottage parents asking each child in the cottage how their day was,” she said with a laugh. “I get it now. I can’t tell you how many times in my daily life as an adult I have used those lessons we were taught by Mom and Pop. I never realized how much that helped me develop my social skills and interactions, which are now a key part of my job.” She is quick to add that it wasn’t only the support and skills she received from the Youth Ranches that shaped her life; she got the chance to follow her dreams and she hasn’t slowed down. “I was so fortunate to be a part of the Youth Ranches Scholarship Program. Without that, I doubt I would have even been able to go to college at all, let alone have so many options available to me.” Alexis received her bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern and is now planning to continue her education and pursue her master’s degree in educational leadership so one day, she will be able to work in school administration. “I want to make a difference,” Alexis said. “As my long-term goal, I could even see myself as vice principal of a school.” For Alexis, above and beyond everything the Youth Ranches has given her

and taught her, what it really gave her was a family. “The Youth Ranch, that’s my family,” she said with pride. “They are as much of a family as you can be without being related. When I get in a tough spot or just need someone to talk to, I know they are there. Still to this day, I have them to help guide me. I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today without the Youth Ranches.”

In Modern Macon
You know those days in January when it warms up enough for a ride, but you don’t want to be caught out after dark because the temperature drops, rather quickly? We’re fortunate here in Georgia, so we can ride our bikes pretty much all year round; although, you may prefer to ride a little less often once those cold winter weeks pop up. So you may be looking for short day rides that can get you back into the warmth of your home before you freeze your tuckus off. A ride to Macon is one of my favorites, and the main reason is that I’m a huge Allman Brothers fan. And Macon is full of interesting sites to see that are all related to the Allman Brothers Band.
When the band moved to Macon, Georgia in 1970, bassist Berry Oakley and his wife rented a house on Vineville Avenue, and shortly all of the band members were either living there or spending most of their time there. They started calling their new band hangout “The Big House.” The house was also located close to the offices of

Capricorn Records, the company who first signed them to a contract. The band not only spent much of their time there, but they also used it for rehearsals and jam sessions. Some of the Allman Brothers songs were written in this house including Dickey Betts’ ‘Blue Sky’ and ‘Rambling Man,’ as well as Greg Allman’s ‘Ain’t Wastin’ Time Here No BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 27

More’ and ‘Midnight Rider.’ In 1993 the house was bought with the intentions of turning it into a Bed and Breakfast, but renovations would have been just too expensive. So the house was left in the hands of the Big House Foundation, a non-profit organization established to turn the Big House into an interactive museum. The foundation renovated The Big House and turned it into that museum, in order to “identify and preserve the history of The Allman Brothers Band.” In November of 2009 The Big House-The Allman Brothers Museum was opened. On first glimpse one can see why this place was once destined to be a Bed and Breakfast. From the outside it in no way looks like where you would find a museum for a bunch of “hippy musicians.” I’m sure it looked a wee bit different when the ‘Brothers’
were staying there. Inside the two-story museum you will find exactly what you would expect and maybe a few things that would surprise you. There are original instruments from the band, from the early days with Duane and Berry to the contemporary band members such as Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. Original posters and prints from concerts that they played, as well as many still images from over the years that hang on the walls. There are all sorts of personal items, from shirts worn by band members, to handwritten song sheets, and even a few paychecks the band wrote to its members. Several of the rooms upstairs have been redone to match pictures taken when the band was living there, Duane and Berry’s bedrooms along with a room that was used to party and jam in. When you’re visiting the museum,
“The music of the Allman Brothers Band has always reminded me of being out on the road and living free.” Early names for the band included The Escorts, The 31st of February, Almanac and The Allman Joys

RIP Duane & Gregg Allman “Together Forever” be sure to ask them about all the sites that could interest an Allman Brothers fan. Both Duane and Berry died tragically in motorcycle accidents on the streets of Macon, and both are buried there in Macon’s famous Rose Hill Cemetery. Rose Hill is on the National Register of Historic Sites and was first used in 1840. Many consider it one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country. The band used Rose Hill as both a hangout and an inspiration during their time in Macon. Songs like ‘In Memory of Elizabeth Reed’ and ‘Little Martha’ were inspired by gravesites you can still find at Rose Hill. Also, the photograph on the back of their first album was shot here at the Bond Tomb. There are many more places in Macon that keep the Allman Brothers Band theme going. Houses, apartments, hangouts, a recording studio and a restaurant frequented by them, as well as by other notable bands and celebrities. Yes, even your appetite can be satisfied at a location that is dripping in Allman Brothers history and memorabilia. H & H Restaurant serves up southern

comfort food and has been a Macon institution since 1959. Capricorn recording studios was next door and over time the band members developed a great relationship with the owner, ‘Mama’ Louise. They even invited her to go on tour and cook for them. In addition to serving meat and three dinners for the Allman Brothers Band members, Molly Hatchet and Wet Willie also used to stop by, and in more recent times Oprah even made an appearance. There are plenty of reasons to visit Macon, but I chose to write about a way to travel the same path as one of my favorite bands. Visiting these various places in Macon can help you understand the band better and you can surely see where they got some of their musical inspirations. The music of the Allman Brothers Band has always reminded me of being out on the road and living free. After all, the one thing many of us bikers have in common, Dickey Betts wrote about in the band’s biggest hit…”Lord, I was born a Ramblin’ Man.” Eric Albright

Jackal’s Gun Talk
Let’s start out this monthly column by me telling you that I HATE MY GUN! Yes. You read that correctly. Hate it, loathe it, despise it … you get the picture. I bought this gun for all the WRONG reasons! I was told that I would love this gun, that it packs easily, and that it would be good stopping power in case it ever had to come to use. My wonderful friends were wrong, wrong, wrong! What if I told you – other than being pestered by my wellintentioned friends – that one of the main reasons I chose this gun is because it’s pink? Yeah. Really. … When Ron Galletti asked me to interview our own Born To Ride Gun Professional, Jackal, I knew that I had to come clean with him on my poor choice of gun purchase. Now, don’t get me wrong; I’ve taken all the classes, had a couple a sweet “attitude adjusters:” North American 22 Long Rifle and a Colt 32 revolver snub nose that I loved but was told when I moved from New York to Florida, I couldn’t take them with me. Starting off this great conversation with Jackal, I asked him what he does to help people like me who need a little help in purchasing a new gun? “The first question I ask is, ‘Why are you buying a gun?’ If they can’t answer me with a valid, logical answer, I don’t do business with them.” At first I thought that was a little harsh, but the more I talked with Jackal and understood his philosophy and experience, the light went on and I “Got It!” Jackal added, “I have to be absolutely sure that when someone is shopping for a gun, they are shopping for the right one and for the right reasons. Another test I do is ask them to hold the gun
as if they were going to shoot it at a target. Most people DO NOT know how to handle a gun let along hold it correctly and safely. Many do not know how to take apart a gun, clean it, and put it all together either. That’s something else that I can help people with.” Jackal told me a great story of when he was in the service. “We were given a gun to take apart, learning how to do it correctly. Imagine what we were thinking when the parts to these guns were taken and put all on a sheet. That’s when we had to put it all back together piece by piece. There could be no leftover parts!” Jackal comes to us with a great amount of knowledge, positive attitude, and know-how. In addition to his time in the service, Jackal has also been a body guard to some of the most influential and well-known people in the country. “My clients always thought that I had to have the top shelf type of gun. That’s not necessary. Again, it all comes down to what you need it for and why.” Jackal also designs firearms and builds them from scratch. “I have a love for guns and this business. It’s my passion and something I love to do every day.” Every month, Born To Ride will be sharing new stories about Jackal, his reviews on guns, and in a few months, we will be doing a “location story” with Jackal and yours truly! From the first meeting, to the education and training – and finally – the correct purchase of the RIGHT gun for me – you will be a part of this addition to our monthly magazine and website! We are all looking forward to this and hope you will be too! Susan Hurst

Steve McQueen, the King of Cool made movies best remembered for their wild car chases, mad motorcycle dashes, and hair-raising races. No other Hollywood star has ever been so closely linked behind the wheel with cars and bikes like McQueen. McQueen’s Machines explores this connection, giving readers a close-up look at the cars and motorcycles he drove in movies, those he owned, and others he raced. From the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback he drove in Bullitt, from the
Triumph motorcycle of The Great Escape to the Gulf-Porsche 917K he actually raced in Le Mans, the cars and bikes that McQueen made famous in films make another appearance in the pages of this book. McQueen’s Machines also features the cars, motorcycles, and airplanes that Steve personally owned over the years, including two motorcycles that fetched record prices at a recent auction: a 1937 Crocker “Hemihead” V-Twin and a 1920 Indian Powerplus Daytona. This compilation is a wealth of detail
about the star’s amateur racing career, his movie stunt work, and his car and motorcycle collecting. All of this information draws a fascinating picture of one outsized man’s driving passion. We sat down with Matt Stone, author of McQueen’s Machines and asked the writer what prompted him to compile this book. “I’m disappointed at who is considered a celebrity car guy these days,” said Stone. “A B-list TV star or an athlete that showcases their Suburban on a “reality” TV show because of its cool wheels and latest iPod jack is BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 45
just dumb PR. Guys like Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and others were serious. McQueen owned cars that make a world class collection and he always had at least 200 motorcycles. He raced cars and bikes then built entire films around them. This was a part of his life and makeup. Even though he couldn’t race professionally because of his movie career, he was a legit, committed gearhead,” Stone continued. “What made Steve McQueen someone that everybody wanted to be like?” “He was the essence of cool—a man’s man and a lady’s man,” said Stone. Far
from perfect, he had his many moods, and a complex personality to say the least. But he was naturally handsome, athletic, and had mountains of ambition and style. There was nothing phony about him.” There are more than twenty books on Steve McQueen in print that just nibble around the corners of his passion for cars, bikes, and racing, while this book exclusively focuses on that passion. And the photos are mind-blowing, several of which have never been published before. This book is available in bookstores everywhere or through www.motorbooks.

In the beginning (of the summer) there was light
And then, the skies grew dark and angry rain and storms came down drenching us in voluminous amounts of water that seems to be incessant and often dangerous. No, this isn’t an adaptation, translation, or convolution of a scripture that could be found in the Bible; it is simply the observation of an old fool who has lived here in ‘paradise’ for many, many years. We all deal with it and in the summer sometimes daily, but when you are on your motorcycle it can often become quite dangerous at times. Historically the deluge starts at about the time when we are heading home from work. Despite having a nice rain suit, a (non-required) helmet and a set of selfcleaning goggles, the angry water can get so heavy that we often think that we should just park somewhere and wait it out. But
this alternative can in some cases become financially draining – especially if you decide to wait it out at the local gentlemen’s club or tavern. So, as a solution to the situation, I recently decided to add a snorkel to my rain attire so that I can strategically place it over my shoulder and behind my head so I don’t inhale a ton of rain and road backwash. Both are problematic and add to the misery of the otherwise enjoyable journey back home. I know – it’s just food for thought – but for some reason I believe it may just work. I will get back to you on this, or you can always reach out to me through the magazine, website, or radio show to tell me that my ideas are idiotic. It’s all good. We all need to think about being safe out there on the road. It’s too bad that we have to share the road with people who

have no consideration for others. Especially bikers. If I had one dollar for every time that I have heard “I didn’t see the motorcycle,” I would be a millionaire and not have to worry about trying to make a buck by working and such. I even tried playing the lottery. That never seems to play out too well, so that is likely the reason I call it a “stupid tax” and refuse to spend my last dollar to try to get lucky. I never expected to be rich anyhow, so I just keep dragging on and trying to buy groceries. I know that I am not the only one in this situation so we will all just keep keeping on. Speaking of keeping on. The only thing that’s worse than getting drenched every day is the impending possibility of doom due to the hurricane season. Should we be unfortunate enough to have a hurricane hit our precious state, the consequences could be dangerous and as you all know – historically disastrous. I remember years back when I wrote about my big hurricane parties fueled by lots of beer, wing restaurant girls, and the occasional employee of a gentlemen’s club. All that aside, it is truly a situation that can be at the very least – worrisome. I have a simple plan for evacuation should the worst happen: “Grab beer – run like hell” – it’s a plan that seems to make sense and will likely keep me protected from whatever impending disaster the storm brings. I typically won’t run away from a cat 1 or cat 2 hurricane but there is always a possibility of bad luck during this time of year. Just keep your eyes and ears open and do whatever is necessary to survive! The potential season only lasts for a few more months so for now, we can just pay our dues riding in the obligatory daily complementary bike wash. Just avoid the ‘spin cycle’ after the dry cycle. … Until next month, ‘speed safely and tune in to the radio show!’ CRAVEN

Spyke & Mike So, my BTR friends, now that the initial demise of the Fat Bird is out there, let me update you with more info. Flo and her friends at the insurance company decide to give Mike the almighty shaft. Basically, they handed him next to nothing for the Ole Bird. His accessories rider barely covered many of the damaged doo-dads that ordained the scoot. My paint job is a total loss and therefore an out-of-pocket expense that Mike has to absorb. The original artist is long gone and he’s received a few estimates from others, all over $6,000. Mike and his friends are still trying to figure out a way to raise this and get my mug shot back on the new ride. If you’ve got a suggestion or idea, we would love to hear it! The idiot with the ’02 Yamaha that caused this mayhem had no insurance and wouldn’t even talk to Mike. He tells me that Mr. Moron said, “call my attorney.” Well, you can figure where that got him. He now has to take the loser to civil court and you know how that usually ends up, like trying to get blood from a stone. A few months have passed, and I’ve been in such withdrawal from not riding that Mike has succumbed to taking me in his truck. I’ll ride hanging out the passenger’s window, like my furry friend the dog. Now, granted it’s not like the bike but it is wind time. We’ve gone to our favorite haunts and Mike has begged some of his friends, like Tara and John, to give me a ride up the street or around the parking lot just to take the edge off. I thank them graciously with a Kodak moment or two and generous kisses. So, if you see us at some bike night or event and would like to help me with my kickstand up time, or lack of, please yell at Mike and he will make it happen. Rob, Burt, Josephine and the gang at Bert’s Barracuda have been very cooperative in trying to get Mike what he wants and can afford. So has Trevor at Next Motorcycle and Andrew at Moramoto. So far, the Fat Bird 2 has eluded all of them. They are looking out for our best interest, but Mike only received a small insulting check from Flo and he is in no position to get under
Thanks Flo
another payment but needs another scoot that will last like the Ole Bird did. He even went as far as taking me for a demo ride on a similar kind of sport bike that took out the Fat Bird. I’m not so sure I like cruising on that style of bike because it’s made with two wheels but likes to be ridden on one. Not being used to a different kind of holding on was a challenge, but I did it, barely ... I think I’d rather fly with Mike on an iron and chrome V-twin than cling onto him riding a painted and plastic 150 mph wheelie machine. In the meantime, he will keep taking me in the truck to all the events and watch our favorite bands play, enjoy some chow, give a few bucks for a good cause and rub elbows with our friends. Besides, this summer we’ve seen a lot more rain, and even though I enjoy the moisture from the sky, all you bikers really don’t like to ride in it—and that includes Mike. One of the coolest places we’ve been in a while is Screwie Louie’s Scooter Haven in Inglis. Brad, Fran, Majic, Jeremy, and Scuba have really helped out in upping his place as a biker destination this past year. It’s just north of High Octane and only a few hours from the Georgia border, Daytona, Orlando or Tampa Bay. Almost every weekend
there’s an event going on. Just check out his ad in the front of this great magazine. The Nature Coast is a wonderful riding area with low traffic, great scenery, and roads that go right to the Gulf, Cedar Key, or many of the cool springs and river restaurants that populate this part of Florida. We will be there on Labor Day weekend doing our world-famous biker games and enjoying the great music, food, and comradery on the huge party deck/bandshell they built around the short bus salvaged from the Porpoise Pub. Make plans now by getting in touch with Fran and setting yourself up for a stay in one of the many cabins, RVs, or just tent it. And for you R.U.B.’s with toy haulers, they’ve got plenty of lots with hookups. But, you’ve gotta make plans early as the place fills up quick for events like this! Mike barks out, “OK Spyke, wrap it up if you want to get out and go looking for your new ride with me. Like you squawk at me, the early bird gets the worm and I’ve got a few leads out there. So, make like a great salesman and close the deal. We’ve got a Fat Bird to find so I can get your wings out of the truck and back in the wind, my knees in the breeze, and its wheels rolling down the road, under us again.”

Ron & Nick Galletti on their Dirt Bikes
Christian Motorcyclists Association Several friends are taking cross country trips on their bikes and it got me thinking about all that happens before they are ready to leave. A while back my wife and I took a nine-day trip around Florida, and learned that even a full-size dresser only has so much space for luggage. We were going to a biker rally, to visit with family, and to attend a business conference, all on the same trip. Just deciding on clothing was a challenge, such as how much of and what kind of clothes, and what we could wash along the way, to help minimize the volume of luggage we would need. We had to start this trip with a lot of planning, like mapping the route we would take, where we would stay along the way, and getting the bike serviced prior to the trip. It took time to just sit and think about what we wanted to do on this trip, and how best to accomplish getting everything done. In the past we would just throw a few things together and take off, this trip demanded more planning and attention. With good planning and organizing in advance, we were more likely to overcome challenges or difficulties. In our planning, we remember to include God, as He is always BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM
available, whenever we seek Him in prayer. When making our plans, we have the blessing of having access to the Father through prayer, and we should take advantage of the same. Time after time in the Bible, Jesus is seen going to the Father for guidance. He would slip away and spend time in the presence of God, through prayer. Perhaps this helps us understand how Jesus was so able, in the midst of challenges and confrontation, to keep His cool and not be tempted to lash out in anger, and sin. In Matthew 26:41 the Bible tells us to “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Jesus lived out that verse, and is an example we should follow. The fact is that the more time one spends in prayer, in the presence of the Lord, the more we hear His voice and learn to hide His Word, and His thoughts, in our hearts. That way when a temptation comes our way, we don’t have to think about what to do; we know what He would have us to do. On a number of occasions I have faced a challenging situation, where tempers were escalating, and rather than react aggressively, His Word led me to respond in peace and gentleness. That was not a “me” thing, it went against my automatic response. It was a wonderful gift from a loving Father. If you will spend time in His presence, He will meet your need, and direct you, when problems arise. He is always there for those who have trusted in Jesus, you simply need to call upon Him. In The Wind, Denny Dingler
