The decision whether to brake first or swerve first in an emergency is critical. You need excellent Search skills so you can effectively Evaluate and use your escape options. Keep in mind an escape option can change quickly if the hazard is moving. For example, a car pulling out in front of you could continue in it’s path or it could stop right in front of you. If you brake without enough distance to stop, you would crash at a reduced speed. If you swerve without slowing and do not have enough space to avoid the hazard, you would crash at your original speed. Here are examples that require a quick decision and action. When going straight: A car backs out of a driveway. Would you brake and swerve? Would you do the same for a child chasing a ball into the street? When in a curve: You

notice an obstacle is in your intended path. Would you have enough space to straighten and then brake before

continuing around it? If you brake while leaned over, is there enough space to swerve and recover?

The Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Archive Collection

W

e have all heard the ragsto-riches history of one of the most revered motorcycle marques in the world, Harley-Davidson. We’ve heard the story of three Davidsons and a Harley starting the company in a backyard shed and building three vehicles back in 1903. Much of the early history of the company is the subject of conjecture and speculation, but some things we know for sure. In 1903, there were more than 150 domestic motorcycle manufacturers in the United States, 7 of which were located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the same city in which Harley and the Davidsons began BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

1903 Serial Number One building motorcycles. As with most industries in their infancy, the majority of these motorcycle companies were short lived, either due to undercapitalization or to an inability to develop a distribution network and market, and then consistently serve that market. Harley-Davidson had sufficient capital and was able to develop an outstanding distribution network and market. By 1920, Harley-Davidson had become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, and by 1953, there were just two American motorcycle manufacturers left standing: Harley-Davidson and Indian, based in Springfield, Massachusetts. That same year Indian closed its doors. Today, Harley-

Davidson corporate offices occupy the same buildings that used to house the original factory, which are just a stone’s throw away from the location of the original shed. From the very beginning, all things Harley-Davidson came from Milwaukee. By 1973, when vehicle manufacturing moved to York, Pennsylvania, more than 1.25 million motorcycles had been built and shipped from this site. The Juneau Avenue complex, as it is now called, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Housed in the 3800 Building is the Harley-Davidson Archives, a 3,100-squarefoot area containing the company history in the form of historic corporate documents,

literature dating back to 1905, service manuals, owner manuals, tens of thousands of images and photographic negatives, point-of-sale and advertising materials, dealer correspondence, rider apparel, and all manner of Harley-Davidson collectibles. This collection creates a rare historic timeline, preserved from the very early years of the company. A separate space houses the vehicle collection, and above the padlocked gate, a sign reads: “Through this gate pass the oldest and greatest motorcycles in the world!” That’s what this book is all about: the Harley-Davidson vehicle collection. It’s the first comprehensive look into the only collection of its kind in the world. Many have speculated over the years about why the vehicle collection was started, a question for which there is no concert explanation. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that it does exist, and includes more than 450 vehicles. The core of the collection consists of vehicles from 1915—the year the collection was started—to the present. Most of these vehicles were taken directly from the production line and, in some instances, may have been engineering prototypes or test units. Vehicles from 1914 back to 1905 were actually re-purchased, either from owners or dealers in the field. To this day, at least one vehicle from each model year takes its place within the collection. There are special-interest vehicles, as well as a Harley-Davidson boat, snowmobiles, golf cars, police vehicles, and prototype models that never saw their way to production. There are special, one-off customs used for advertising or dealer point of sale. No other motor vehicle manufacturer had the foresight to save what Harley-Davidson has saved for more than 100 years. The archival artifacts chronicle more than just Harley-Davidson history; they represent the evolution of technology, styling, advertising, and product development. Most important, however, is that the collections reflect the lives of those who built, sold, and rode a true American Legend. To dealers and riders of yesterday as well as today, thank you for keeping the Legend alive. This book is the first in-depth look inside the Corporate Archives, and yet it embodies a mere fraction of the extensive collections housed at the museum site. So we sincerely hope that this presentation whets your appetite for a trip to Milwaukee in the not-too-distant future as you come to realize that the company founders had it right all the time—Milwaukee is the place to be. Publisher’s Note “Motorbooks and Harley-Davidson hit a home run with this book; it’s a must have for all enthusiasts.” This book celebrates the American company who shaped motorcycle history … HarleyDavidson. Over 200 motorcycles from the archive

collection are inside this book! You will drool over the photos (600 plus) as you witness the beauty and style of these history making machines. We’ve just scratched the surface with this extended review, wait until you see all the gems in this book’s collection! To sum it up I would say “unparalleled.” I can’t wait for the trip to Milwaukee to witness this firsthand because that’s where these gems are showcased, at the new Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. Visit www.harley-davidson.com to learn more about the museum. “In closing I’d like to say you just don’t buy a Harley-Davidson to save on gas. You get one for the lifestyle and the freedom riding one provides. It’s life on the highway like never before. You know gas was $2.75 and lunch was $10 today: but having the opportunity to publish this extended book review … priceless!” Ron Galletti

The story of the birth of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches proves miracles do happen. It tells how an impossible dream grew into one of the finest delinquency prevention programs in the nation.

Early History

In 1955, two veteran Florida Sheriffs took a trip to Texas—a trip that would forever change the lives of thousands of Florida’s trouble, abused, and neglected youngsters. Several years ago, Hillsborough County Sheriff Ed Blackburn, Jr. related the following details about that memorable trip. He and Marion County Sheriff Don McLeod made the journey to retrieve a pair of armed robbery suspects. “It was in June of 1955 that Don and I drove to Amarillo. The drive out West was tedious and tiring. We decided to rest a day before beginning the trip back home,” began Blackburn as the story unfolded. “The local sheriff assigned a deputy to guide us around. He was a typical Texan, tall, high hat, cowboy boots, extremely courteous and accommodating. Since the county was far too big to see in one day, he offered us a choice. He told us we could visit the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon or take a look at a ranch for needy and neglected boys. Ironically, we chose to see the canyon. While that deputy drove us around the canyon, he recounted the wonderful results of that boys ranch on the other side of the county. He told us how a former wrestler had picked up four ‘ragamuffins’ out of the slums and alleys of Amarillo … how he gave them a home with love and discipline and helped turn their lives around. We learned how the old house he bought in 1939 had grown into a home for 200 boys. This deputy was a supporter of this ranch and truly sang its praises. The next day we put the two prisoners in the back seat of our car and headed home. One suspect was an 18-year-old boy. He had been injured during the get-away so he had a tube draining out of his side and a cast on one foot. The other prisoner, his accomplice, was a frightened 17-year-old girl, some five months pregnant. A few miles east of Amarillo, the seed that the Texas Deputy had sown began to germinate. What made it stir, no one knows. Maybe it was the plight of that shot-up, crippled boy and frightened pregnant girl in our back seat. They were little more than kids, yet were in big trouble. We began to talk, agreeing if a wrestler could capture the vision of helping neglected and unwanted boys … then, so could the Sheriffs of Florida. We began talking to fellow sheriffs about starting a Boys Ranch in Florida. Later that year, we presented the idea to the Florida Sheriffs Association Board of Directors. The idea was

BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM

tabled because no money was available. Another year passed, but somehow miracles live on. In early 1957, the Sheriffs of Florida voted to approve the Honorary Membership program to raise funds for the Association. In less than six months, hundreds of Floridians became Honorary Members of the Florida Sheriffs Association. Now, instead of being broke, the Association had a bank balance of $7,000. Our dream to help troubled boys was quickly revived! No one suggested sheriffs didn’t know how to run a Boys Ranch. No one told us about the State Welfare Department’s licensing restrictions, or the State Board of Health’s inspection and permitting process. Nor did we consider the formidable task of getting the Internal Revenue Service to grant us a Charitable Tax Exemption status. Least of all, no one mentioned $7,000 wouldn’t even buy a paddy wagon, much less start a Boys Ranch. Nevertheless, at our next meeting, Florida’s Sheriffs voted for found the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. The Associated Press picked up the story and gave us the much-needed publicity.” Meanwhile, Suwannee County Sheriff Hugh Lewis picked up the ball and ran with it. He knew that Live Oak Businessman Tommy Musgrove had originally given some 40 acres to the Elks Club for a youth project. He also owned another 120 acres to the south of that site. Sheriff Lewis persuaded the Elks and Tommy to consider donating this land on the banks of the Suwannee River for the Ranch. Local community leaders formed a prestigious committee, spearheaded by J.L. McMullen, who helped convince the sheriffs to select this land as the site for its proposed Ranch. The sheriffs officially accepted the offer during the FSA conference in August of 1957. The sheriffs also learned that just east of this beautiful site were two abandoned farms totaling another 550 acres. They were just perfect for the project, but it would cost $31,000 in cash to buy them both. Two local banks

agreed to lend the sheriffs $13,000 each, for a total of $26,000 toward the purchase price of the farms. The sheriffs added $5,000 of their $7,000 bank balance and bought the land. Now with only $2,000 cash in hand, the men embarked on the task of building the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. Florida’s sheriffs were undaunted by the challenges before them. They had a dream and a hope—a vision of a better life for youngsters— and they had the growing support of the citizens of Florida. As news of the Boys Ranch project spread, the sheriffs’ circle of interested and supportive friends began to grow. Floridians were learning their sheriffs had virtues never seen before. This vision of helping boys with bad breaks get their lives back on track had appeal. The Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch gained popular support and captured the imaginations and hearts of generous people across the state and nation. Countless friends, both new and old, responded. People donated money and materials, joining with the sheriffs in this labor of love. Ground was broken for the first cottage in the summer of 1958, and the first boys moved to the Ranch in early 1959. The Boys Ranch Trustees voted to dedicate that first cottage in memory of Pinellas County Sheriff Sid Saunders. He died suddenly, just after helping to hire the architect for the new cottage at the Boys Ranch. Sheriff Saunders’ untimely death triggered an outpouring of memorial gifts for the fledgling Boys Ranch. These precious gifts of love and hope helped carry on the vision to provide a safe home for so many deserving children. These original donors have now been joined by countless other friends and benefactors who have helped the Boys Ranch grow into a statewide network of programs that has served over 100,000 boys, girls, and their families from across the state of Florida. Because of the leadership of Florida’s Sheriffs and the ongoing generosity of our donor family, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has truly become Florida’s Charity for Florida’s Children.

We love looking at unique and well-built motorcycles when we attend various bike nights, events, and races. Well, folks, a new bike shop is opening up in Zephyrhills that has already taken the custom-made motorcycle to a new and matchless level! May I introduce Kenny Dukes, owner, designer, and bike builder at Hellbenders Motorcycles! Why did you get involved in building motorcycles? Did you have a passion for this? “I was working for California Motorcycles for many years. Working in that environment got me thinking about doing my own custom manufacturing where I had my own brand and my own identity with the bikes that I built.” Kenny took his vision and created Hellbenders Motorcycles. “We don’t cut corners on anything that we do. If you come into

We take your measurements, find out what type of bike you want to have, and design that custom machine just for you. I also want to know what excites you about a motorcycle.” Kenny gets all the information to what YOU want in your dream bike. From colors, rims, seat, to rake, tires, and engine, the bike is designed and built. Kenny added, “We build and have on the floor the frame as a roller; complete with wheels and a front end. We put you on the frame and see where the fit is and make our measurements from there. We discuss color and the style of frame you want. We have five different styles of frames for you to choose from; a pro street to a soft tail to several different types of hardtail frames, there will be a frame just for you.” Do you build your frames in Florida? “Yes! We manufacture them in a separate shop. We are a manufacturing company with

a manufacturing license. We have the same license as Big Dog Motorcycles, Harley-Davidson, etc. All of our titles have the 16-digit VIN. You can go to any bank for financing and get your insurance from any insurance company with these bikes.” “I wanted to start my own custom bike building company back in the 1990s. At that point in time, it just wasn’t financially feasible BTR 36 | BORNTORIDE.COM

to get involved. I’m a blue-collar worker – I’m just like everybody else. I had a job, beating on roofs every day so that I could build motorcycles on the weekends.” How long does it take to build a custom, Hellbenders Motorcycle? “It takes 30-60 days, from start to finish, to complete that new bike.” Does Kenny have a unique logo for Hellbenders Motorcycles? “We don’t really have a logo on the bike, but we do have a 14-carat gold plated nameplate that will be placed on the frame of the bike with rivets – not an easy item to remove! seat, no engine – only the frame and wheels. You pick out the frame you want and from there, we custom build your bike to your request. Within six weeks, you’ll have that bike in your possession. We are up and ready to welcome customers into our shop. We are an authorized dealer for Drag Specialties, S & S Motors (we install a 124 cubic inch motor for the bikes we build.), Parts Unlimited, American Suspension, and many others. All bikes have a three-year, 40,000-mile warranty.” “We build strong-framed bikes. If you really want to rip on these bikes, the frame will take the massive torque. We have built frames for many of the top motorcycle builders in the country. We have patents on all of our bikes. No one can go out and copy any of our bikes.”

“We try to and strive to build the best motorcycle on the planet. We don’t scrimp on any parts. Everything we do is done professionally. We are cautious of assembly. There is NO buying of cheap parts! Everything that goes on our bikes is AMERICAN MADE!” Kenny got involved with Born To Ride many years ago – in fact, he was one of Born To Ride’s original front cover advertisers when he was with California Motorcycles! “Ronnie and I go way back – I think in the 1990s! Ronnie and Debbie are really good people! We’ve done a lot of advertising with BTR ‘back in the day!’” “Look for a Big Grand Opening Party Coming Soon.” “We try to and strive to build the best motorcycle on the planet. Nothing from another country gets installed on our bikes. If something comes into the shop from another country, it gets thrown out the back door!” Winding up our conversation, Kenny gave me a pronounced declaration about his custom bike building shop: If you can dream it, we can build it! “People have ideas in their minds what they

custom bikes for people to ride every day. We don’t build bikes for Trailer Queens (people that trailer their bikes to events instead of RIDING the bike!)” Kenny has four people currently working at Hellbenders Motorcycles. “I have two major fabricators that build the frames and seat pans. We build everything completely – and can even build that unique sissy bar if you want. We have people that complete the seat upholstering – this way, the customer has the choice to pick and choose what they want for a seat covering. “When you walk into my shop, you see the roller frame; no

On behalf of Blackwater Jeepers, TriCounty Jeepers, Offroad Alliance, and Trail Monkeys 4x4, we cordially invite you to our event, Jeeps vs. Harleys, Saturday, October 6, 2018. All Motorcycles are welcome to participate. This event has grown into a fun family event for charities and continues to grow each year. Last year, we produced Jeeps vs. Harleys with only three months to plan, successfully bringing Jeepers and Harley owners from all over the state to this oneday event—and had in excess of 1,200+ attendees! We had 360+ Jeeps, 180+ Harleys attend the police escorted non-stop convoy from Brandon, Florida to Pasco Sheriff’s Safety Town in Hudson, Florida. The success of the first event garnered $16,000, and 100% of the proceeds went to two amazing charities; C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) and the Farrell Cares Foundation, both 501c3 organizations. This year’s proceeds will be distributed to mainly 501c3 charities, local charities, churches, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and rehabilitated programs across west central Florida. All proceeds from the 100th Anniversary Harley-Davidson Grand Prize will go to the west-central chapter of

C.O.P.S. in Tampa, FL. This charity has done so much to help family survivors put their lives back together by offering: child therapy, scholarships, grief counseling, and sending survivors to a camp with other survivors from around the country. A brief description is as follows: • 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. will be staging for the convoy and the sponsored hospitality tent • 9 a.m. the convoy will roll out together, Jeeps and Harleys for the police escorted 36-mile ride to Sun n Fun in Lakeland • The entire convoy will arrive at 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. • As the convoy finishes parking we plan to have the national anthem played • 11:30 a.m. the live band will have started, there will be beer, raffles, prizes, food, vendors, a bike show and jeep show • Born To Ride will be on hand doing a TV Taping for their TV Show, so come out and get on TV • At 5p.m. The Grand Prize Raffle will be held to see who will win the fully-customized Jeep Wrangler or the Harley-Davidson Fatboy • 6 p.m. the event will wind down with food, drink, and vendors still available as the attendees are collecting their trophies and

filing into the show areas This year the Grand Prizes include a fully custom-built Jeep Wrangler AND a 100th Anniversary Edition Harley-Davidson sponsored by Jeepin Central Florida magazine. Tickets to Win the Jeep are only $20 and tickets to Win the Harley are only $10. We are looking for vendors and sponsors for this one of a kind charity event. 10 Reasons to Vote for Kenneth James Mathis

1: He has actually taught in the classroom and has 20 years in the trenches as a successful teacher in the classroom. Neither one of his opponents are teachers. 2: He has been evaluated by the current flawed, subjective Instructional Evaluation System, never receiving an overall summative evaluation score rating less than Effective; during the 2016-2017 School year, he was rated Highly Effective. His opponents are not teachers, so they have not been put through this process. 3: He has always advocated for the Fine Arts and the Elective Courses for Elementary School, Middle School, and High School.

4: He has led and participated in school-based and District level committees such as Chairman of the School Safety Committee, Chairman of the Elective Professional Learning Community, School Advisory Council member, School Leadership Team member, District Middle School Design Team member, District Vision Committee member, Chairman of the School-Based Positive Recognition Money Committee, and Elective Team Leader. 5: He created one of the largest fine arts fundraisers in Pasco County DC Country Jam. 6: He has promoted his student’s talents on TV news channels,

newspapers, FM radio, the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, and the Orange Bowl in Miami. 7: He comes from a long family history of serving the community in East Pasco County since 1910. 8: He has a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. 9: He taught in a Title 1 Middle school from 2007-2018. 10: For many consecutive years, he has turned in the most parent volunteer hours than anyone else on campus which resulted in Pasco Middle School becoming a 5-star rated school.

Spyke & Mike

Summer Fun and Hot Talons

Hey there, my BTR friends, it’s hot enough out there in the sun to cook an egg on the sidewalk, let alone the talons underneath me. During the summer months, Mike doesn’t let my feet hit the ground. In this kind of weather, I would be doing the burning parrot foot dance. And just like you humans, it would blister my little toes. Mike breaks in, “Yes Spyke, we are not riding much during the day because of the hair dryer winds, and in the evenings when

a lot of new faces and our old friends have been telling us they like the improvements. Come on out and see for yourself. On the third Wednesday of the month, Ron and Debbie show up with the camera crew and many people enjoy their 15 minutes of fame and glory. Everyone seems to be as happy as the fat guy at the endless wing bar. I told Mike, “I bet his hobbies include eating and complaining that he’s getting fat while he’s downing cake because he says

we do ride we’re running from the rain. I spoke with Grandpa last week and he told me it’s hotter than the devil’s underarm. He also told me to keep you in the shade at a minimum, or better yet, inside because it’ll boil your birdbrain and make you madder than an Amish electrician.” Mike and I have been managing to make it up to the best Wednesday Bike Night in the area, Quaker Steak & Lube. Bill Church has kept the bands top-notch, the drinks ice-cold, and the food nothing short of awesome. We and BTR are doing our part in making it great again! We’ve seen

it’s somebody’s birthday somewhere.” Mike replied, “Yeah I’ve seen that dude. Bill is losing money on him!”

“Mike and I have been managing to make it up to the best Wednesday Bike Night on the Planet Quaker Steak & Lube.”

Earlier in the month, the rain gods blessed the River’s Edge Bar with a beautiful Saturday afternoon for the band ‘Cowboy’ to

put on their awesome Kid Rock tribute show. Too bad the sun god didn’t miss the bus and the clouds were far and few between. Mike ordered some raw oysters and steamed shrimp and he was amazed at the size and flavor! I really enjoyed the steak fries he got me. Since the new owners took over a short while ago that place has been a topnotch biker destination for great food and live music. If you haven’t been there lately, you’re missing out! On Sundays and evenings when we’re not riding, you can usually find us where the surf meets the sand enjoying the evening waves and a sunset or lounging on floats in the pool at the Sanctuary. Mike got me a really cool raft to hang out on with him and his friends. Now I don’t have to sit on my perch and just watch. He cranks up the Jimmy Buffett, fires up the grill, and gets the blender going. Then we have a good ole time until the cows come home. What else is there to do in this heat besides that or sit in the air conditioning and watch past episodes of Born To Ride TV. Mike babbles, “Yeah Spyke, the pool is cool, but I really want to get you out on that boogie board and practice catching a few waves. Maybe next month when we’re on vacation. For now, finish pecking away at the keyboard. Ron is blowing up my phone for the story because you left yours at The River’s Edge. I’m washing the scoot for our trip across the Skyway bridge. We have to retrieve your phone ‘cause I’m done being your secretary and answering service. I need to get your wings in the wind, my knees in the breeze, and the Fat Bird 2 wheels rolling down the road.” SPYKE

- would my life be better? I don’t think so. I should just stay grounded in the simple biker lifestyle that has made me what I am. Whatever that is. ... I think it is working for me so far and I don’t think I would look good in one of those space suit gimmicks. It was my birthday in July. Right before Christmas in July so I learned a lot about getting older and older. The first thing that comes to mind is that it’s okay getting older when you consider the alternative and the other thing that I learned is that social media is a messed-up place from time to time. One of the good things that happened during my birthday week was that I was thrown a party at a local bar by a fellow musician and friend which in my opinion was under-attended, but I did get to play some music with some of my long-lost friends from the live music scene. I also re-connected with one of my longtime love interests which was nice. As life goes on you have to realize what is truly important and keep on having the faith. So, when my actual birthday rolled around one more of my true friends stepped up and he and his wife stopped by with some beer, a homemade birthday card, and some food. Had this not happened I would have sat here on my butt in the trailer park with the dawgs and little or no food. As you have noticed, I have not mentioned names here because I neglected to get permission to publish these names, but you know who you are. I’m not too big on publishing names anyway. I would never want to cause anyone embarrassment just because I was bragging. Honestly, I don’t have too much to brag about. Mine is a meager From month to month, I never know what I am going to write about. So, on my broke-ass life so why drag anyone else down occasional visits to the BTR office, I often ask our editor Jesse what he would like to into it? Levels of success and survival are relative see me write about. On my last visit, he commented that he would like to see me write anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. We all just something ‘uplifting.’ A short discussion ensued regarding hydraulics and other airkeep on keeping on - against all odds. powered devices that lift up our automobiles, motorcycles and a myriad of other items Last month I mentioned that I would report that need to be elevated for service or maintenance. To make matters worse I continued on the tariffs that the government would impose on about other things like the NASA program that sends a variety of junk into space, upon the importation of certain goods up to and the SpaceX program that sends an even larger amount of junk into space and some including the Harley-Davidson Motor Company other crap regarding the space station, life on Mars and the inevitable moon discussion which is manufacturing our beloved bikes in the which causes everyone to look up occasionally just to see if there is actually a man in UK somewhere. Well, that is likely not to happen the moon. Yes, allegedly we have already sent astronauts to the moon and some of the now - or anytime soon due to the primary conspiracy theorists have claimed that it never really happened, but I kinda believe that election going on. You cannot turn on the news we actually went there for at least a few minutes. I’m not too sure what we expected to from any source without hearing the political find there, but I suppose it is like when I go to explore a new trailer park somewhere. mud-slinging, self-aggrandizement and bragging We came, we saw, and we got a few alien’s phone numbers. The parallels are amazing about all the candidates that are running for I think. Well, maybe not. It may cost millions and billions of dollars to explore space various offices here in Florida. I have not been while just visiting local trailer parks only costs a few bucks in gas. The difference? My able to verify anything on the national level even simple travels never make the news but if I had a rocket launcher, I would be super while using the internet. Trump has claimed ‘Fake famous. promoting their position and power to make a change. I usually vote by mail but sometimes it’s kinda cool to go to the polls and watch the opponents duke it out. If we all could just get behind the concept of living in a free country and leaving all the hate and discontent behind it would be great but there is a lot of polarization going on simply based upon political party. Why can’t we just go vote for whom we want without a conflict? I know a lot of people do not believe in Trump or his political stand and I am neither agreeing or denying that he is doing the right thing. Whether I voted for him or not is not the question here, but the reality exists. He IS our President and we have to learn to deal with the situation whether we like it or not. It’s not like everyone is against him but daily I see the media taking shots at him from people reporting a plethora of acts that are questionable especially regarding porn stars and Russian collusion, but yet he carries on. If he would lose his Twitter account, he may get a better approval rating. That is just a personal observation. Either way, we must continue on and enjoy living in our great country. My opinions are my own and should not reflect the opinions of this magazine or any other entity where this article or content within could be distributed. How’s that for a disclaimer?? I guess I felt like I should say that - not because I fear everyone hating on me. I get enough of that but simply because my dedicated readers understand that I am often outspoken, controversial or otherwise not socially acceptable. This is the life I live, and I really enjoy hearing the feedback from my readers. Thanks so much. ... I hope everyone has a great summer and keep dodging the storms and distracted drivers. Be safe and keep the shiny side up!

Christian Motorcyclists Association of money by buying a bucket of all black wiring to hook up the electrics. It was a nightmare trying to trace out a problem, and several of the guys laughed at my bad choice. The point is that while I was eager, I eventually had to confess to the bike shop owner that I was in over my head. I needed help, so he sold me colored wiring, a handlebar clutch, and while laughing, gave me a firm pat on the back! By going to someone that knew how to fix the bike correctly I was able to overcome my lack of knowledge. There is a verse in the Bible, in I John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right.” When I think about some of the consequences I’ve had to face because of not being careful that I was making a good decision, it is a wonder I survived it all. Whenever I’ve gotten into a really big jam, I know that I can call on God to forgive my foolish actions and to make things right again. Make no mistake; there are consequences to bad decisions. I had to completely rewire that chopper, and that suicide clutch almost lived up to its name with me on board one afternoon. Just like that bike shop owner got me out of a fix; God has always been there for me. Because of trusting in Jesus as my Savior, I have been completely forgiven of my past. Would you like to know that kind of forgiveness? In The Wind, Denny Dingler Check out BornToRide.com for more articles from Christian Motorcyclists Association

During my college years, I brilliantly decided to replace my Honda 750 with a Harley. I got a loan and started looking to see what was available. I just missed a beautiful, chromed-out bike that was even decorated the way I liked. The only problem is that I was about 5 hours too late getting the loan and someone snatched the bike before I had a chance. Unfortunately, the bug to actually own a Harley bit hard, I became desperate. The only thing I could find in my price range was an old Panhead basket case in a rigid frame, with a suicide clutch. If that clutch didn’t get your heart going, nothing would! That bike, for me at that point in time, was the wrong ride! I should have been patient and waited until a more appropriate bike came along. Anyway, I went ahead and bought it, buckets, cardboard boxes, and miscellaneous parts. Every Saturday, I’d load up the bed of the truck with all the parts and go down to the bike shop and work at assembling the various pieces. One of the consequences of my actions was having to nickel and dime myself to purchase missing or worn out parts. After all, the bike was about thirty years old. Another consequence of a bad decision involved saving a lot BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM
