If you ride a Motorcycle, you know that out on the road you might as well be transparent, because car drivers often look right past you. They might notice the car or truck behind you, but you, in all your “narrowness,” may not register in the visual cortex of even the most alert drivers.

PRETEND YOU ARE INVISIBLE

Be as conspicuous as possible. Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. Always have your headlight on, and use your high beam or an aftermarket headlight modulator during the day (where allowed).

Pretend You’re Invisible. If you assume others on the road can’t see you, and any car that can hit you will hit you, you will tend to ride in a hyper-aware mindset and learn to notice every detail in your surroundings. That’s why an oncoming car driver might turn left in front of you at an intersection.

The FXDR 114 offers more lean angle than any other Softail model. Visually, the FXDR 114 communicates its commitment to performance through design inspirations from the drag strip – from a molded speed screen to a clipped tail section and solo seat. The rear fender is shaped to hug a massive 240 mm tire and moves with the tire through the range of the suspension, so it becomes almost invisible when the FXDR 114 is in motion.

The Newest Baddest Flagship of Harley-Davidson

The Crystal Group was established by Steven D. Lamb in 1984 with a single Chevrolet store in Homosassa, Florida. Steve began with a mission to bring exceptional service and a vision of quality product to his customers. With the help of his wife Jewel, son Justin and a dedicated staff they have expanded to many locations throughout Citrus, Hernando, Marion and Volusia Counties, The Crystal Group offer sales and service for Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Harley-Davidson, Kubota agriculture, and construction equipment. To this day the Crystal group is still a fourth-generation family owned and operated business that prides itself on creating long-term customer relationships that will last for generations. The Lamb’s, along with their entire staff, continually make a difference in the communities they serve through contributions of volunteering of time and financial resources. Florida newest attraction isn’t a theme park, it’s Crystal Harley-Davidson Homosassa. The newset flagship of HarleyDavidson-Owner Steve Lamb is about to give us a personal tour.

Ron: Tell me about your service department here. Man, this is awesome. Steve: I’m very excited about the Crystal Service Department. We have an automatic door where the customer pulls up. It lifts, and they pull into an air-conditioned area and our service advisors come out and greet you. Through the curtain is the main body of the service department where our nine technicians, two of which are masters, take care of your motorcycle—let me show you. We have helmet parking. When our customers come in they have a place to set their helmets, so they don’t have to carry it around. All the bikes will be lined up tradeins, customer’s bikes, and then over on this side is where our technicians work. We have a special tool area. In the center, there is an opening where our technicians conveniently go to get the parts for your bike. The Service area is 20,000 square feet. Ron: Wow. For some people, that’s the whole shop. Steve: The store we moved out of, the whole dealership was 22. It’s nice to have the room for the guys and quality work

environment for them. That’s important. Ron: How does that make you feel? That big jump that you took to expand? Steve: It makes me feel good because we have a very good customer base. Harley riders are loyal to people who service them the right way. That’s what we’re going to do. Service them the right way. We’ve got the room, we’ve got the equipment, most importantly, we have the people. That’s the most important to us is service. Making sure the bike is safe and properly serviced for our customer. Ron: Looks like a great environment to work in too. It’s nice and cool in here. You’ve got big fans going. The lifts are pretty full already. Steve: Oh, they are. We’re so busy. Of course, now we’re coming into our busy months which is September, October, and November. They are just the best riding months in this part of Florida. We’re excited. Our service department is open six days a week. Monday through Saturday. We keep one tech here on Sunday in case of emergencies. Somebody breaks down, come BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 23

down and see us. Ron: Tell me more about the parts here that you’ve integrated? Steve: What’s so special about our parts department is that we have high-density bins. Two things happen, one, it gives you way more room in the service department. Number two, it’s very accessible for our parts people. They can find the parts really quickly and get it to the tech, so he can get the motorcycle done quicker. I’ll show you an example. In all these drawers, it tells you where the part is, which drawer it’s in. Ron: So, it’s computerized so they know exactly where it’s at? They know when

have the part within a couple of hours either way and get you back on the road. Ron: That’s gotta help your staff, knowing how easy it is to find what they’re looking for. That’s really cool. Steve: There’s nothing worse than telling a customer that their part is on back order, or I’ll have the part here tomorrow. They don’t want to hear that. They want their bike back. Ron: You want to get them back on the road, right? That’s awesome. Steve: In our shipping receiving department, we try to keep a set of tires for just about every application. We don’t make the customer wait on that either.

come and relax. Cheer on the Gators! Ron: This looks like home. It looks like a lodge setting. It’s really unbelievable. Steve: We have the women’s section, the men’s section, and then our t-shirt wall. We’re really pleased with the way this design came out and how it works for us. We’ve got complimentary Starbucks coffee for our customers. Ron: Crystal River is such a historic Nature Coast to ride to and now there is a total ride destination you’ve built. Steve: It is. Home of the manatee. Lots of really good riding here. The Ozello ride is just phenomenal and North of here, up

they’re out and when they need to reorder? Steve: It automatically replenishes. If we have four widgets and we sell one, it immediately orders another one, so we have four at all times. Now, depending on the part, certain parts we may have 20 of. Some parts we may have two because they are slow moving, but we’ve got them. We also have the advantage of our second store, Workhorse Harley, over in Ocala which also has a very large parts department. We have a driver back and forth every day. If your motorcycle breaks down, chances are, we’ll

We keep pipes if people want to upgrade. It is becoming more and more popular to personalize your bike. Our chrome specialists help our customers pick customized parts for their bike. Ron: That’s important there. Once they buy one they want to personalize it right? Now the showroom is unbelievable, Steve. Steve: We have room for 80 motorcycles in our showroom. Also, we have a road gear section; boots, helmets, jackets, riding gear. We tried to have some really nice sitting areas for our customers where they can

326 over towards Ocala, and then we have Sleepy Hollow. Which is lack of a better way to put it a great biker bar. A friend of mine owns it. He does a great job there. Most Harley people know about it. It’s right across the county and the roads between here and there are absolutely gorgeous. Ron: It’s also a quick ride north up to Cedar Key. As you look out, Steve, you’re down the street but you built this total destination. Congratulations. How are you feeling right now when you look out? Steve: I’m so excited. It’s like one of those

times in your life when you pinch yourself and go wow is this really happening? We really wanted a destination store really, really bad. I got to hand it to my wife. She’s responsible for the way this store looks and its layout. She just did an awesome job. Ron: That’s great. Teamwork is really good but also personalization. It’s great to have a good partner, your wife, Jewel. Steve: We went and looked at 30 or 40 different Harley stores to see what we like and what we didn’t like when we started this. Ron: I think you guys did an unbelievable job on this. I noticed the expressions on people’s faces when they came in. You said you sat

Steve: You’re always nervous when you’re building. You just don’t know how it’s going to turn out. We were really blessed that it turned out, not only we like it and enjoy it, but our customers clearly like it and enjoy it. Ron: What about Harley Corporate? What did they think? Steve: They’re ecstatic. They think we are representing their brand very well. Ron: Speaking of the brand, a lot of people say they want to sell bikes. They want to sell motorcycles. I think you guys are selling that lifestyle here. Steve: It’s clearly the lifestyle that we want to sell. That’s the best way for you to enjoy

Ron: Someone’s out there reading right now, tell them exactly where you’re at. How do they get here? Steve: We are between Homosassa and Crystal River on US 19; 1147 Sun Coast Blvd is what US 19 is called up here. We are 60 miles, as the crow flies, North of Tampa; 30 miles, South West of Ocala, and 50 miles southwest of Gainesville. We are 40 miles due west of Leasburg. Gives you an idea.

outside the first day of the opening, how was that? Steve: Watching people come in, I was gloating. I was just so excited and so proud at what we’ve accomplished. I wanted to see the look on people’s faces when they walked out. Ron: What were those looks like? Can you remember some of them? Steve: Pretty wide-eyed. Pretty wide-eyed—it was really awesome. Ron: Isn’t it great you have a dream, you build it, and have people love the dream?

“Salty Shamrock … a Great Food Destination”

Riding to Apollo Beach to review the Salty Shamrock is something I’ve been more than looking forward to. I enjoy telling our friends and readers about GREAT food destinations and this one was pure joy! Whether you live in Pasco, Pinellas, or Hillsborough County or beyond, the ride to Salty Shamrock is well worth your time, not to mention a beautiful ride. There is something here for everyone. My favorites have been and will continue to be the Celtic Eggrolls, (stuffed with corned beef, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese) and loaded Fries with Guinness Gravy. Let’s not forget the HUGE Bavarian Pretzel with beer cheese sauce (or maybe a side of Guinness Gravy). We also sampled some fantastic

wings – trying both the traditional medium and the Garlic Parmesan. These and many other items are half off their regular GREAT price during Monday Football night. After tasting the above fare from the Small Plate menu, the Tuna Sashimi I was served was listed as a “Small Plate” – but quite honestly, it was a great sized portion – very lightly seared, and resting on a bed of mild Wasabi, Ginger, and Asian slaw. As my first Sashimi EVER, this was a fantastic way to begin. Next, the Schnitzel “Jaeger” was simply incredible! Chef Steve pounds, breads and fries it to a perfect golden brown, and covers it with a special mushroom gravy and is served with fries and a vegetable. I saved the best for last … the Ahi Tuna Napoleon is what Legends are made of. This tuna sports a wonderful citrus honey

glaze served over the best risotto ever and topped with Cabbage Shrimp Napoleon. It was nothing short of phenomenal. I could not review the Salty Shamrock without mentioning other Celtic dishes they offer, such as Ma’s Shepherd’s Pie, Scotch Eggs, and Shamrock’s Fish and Chips! I’ve sampled these traditional foods elsewhere and I promise these will not disappoint you. The Salty Shamrock provides Tampa Bay’s BEST entertainment. Their Bike Night on the last Thursday of each month is something you should add to your calendar. The servers are always responsive to your needs, and the food is available indoors or out. If the owner Sean Rice is in the house be sure to tell him Born To Ride sent you. Give the Salty a try or just c’mon back! You’ll LOVE the Salty as much as I do!

Following a visit to our headquarters by Ken Engelman, I reached out to Born To Ride. Ken, who is an American, was on a tour around Israel to see how the country uses and works with motorcycles to respond to medical emergencies. He was very impressed with our operation and suggested that I reach out to Born To Ride. After looking at your website and online media, I thought that this would be a terrific place to tell the story of how motorcycles are used to save lives here in Israel. United Hatzalah’s motorcycle responders are Israel’s most active volunteers. We come from all backgrounds and religions to provide the very first response to medical emergencies across the country. While some of our men and women only began riding later on in life, their mission to save lives, combined with the need for speed in shaving off response times and the simple enjoyment of riding a motorcycle combines to make all of us riders simply born to ride. I am thankful that you are helping us spread the word. Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring our model of lifesaving to other locations as well and help more people.

When United Hatzalah’s (Hatzalah is Hebrew for Rescue) Founder and President Eli Beer said that he would create an emergency medical service system that would enable first responders to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency with a national average response time of fewer than three minutes, people didn’t believe him. When he said that first responders were the tools that saved lives and not ambulances, people didn’t believe him. When he put EMTs, paramedics, and doctors on motorcycles and built a box in the back to carry all of the lifesaving

equipment present in an ambulance aside from the bed and backboard and called it an ambucycle, people thought it was crazy. Now after 12 years, 5,000 responders, and 750 ambucycles people believe. Having attained those goals, United Hatzalah of Israel is now set to enhance its current response system to enable first responders to arrive at the scene of an emergency with an average response time of 90 seconds across the country. It sounds absurd, especially when most Western countries, provinces, counties, and cities

“This is such a real International story of passion for life we are honored to tell.” Thank You, Ron Galletti

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 43

have set a goal of attaining an average response time of 8 or 9 minutes. But most of those authorities don’t use ambucycles and highly trained volunteer responders who drop whatever they’re doing and rush out at a moments notice to respond to emergencies in their local vicinity. 90 seconds seems like a dream. But, as Eli and United Hatzalah have already proven, when you are dealing with speed and ambucycles, dreams very quickly become a reality. Saving critical seconds in the field of EMS and beginning the process of prehospital treatment in the case of any medical

emergency faster is the mission. In Israel, United Hatzalah is doing exactly that and providing treatment before an ambulance can arrive. By utilizing its fleet of ambucycles to get emergency personnel through traffic faster, a national network of trained EMS personnel, and advanced geolocation technology similar to UBER, United Hatzalah has already succeeded at lowering the average emergency response time to 90 seconds in major cities such as Jerusalem, parts of Tel Aviv and others. Other organizations are following suit and thus the patients benefit from the resulting flashmob of responders who

Born To Ride Magazine, Real Editorial Content, Real Value for you the Reader

rush to an emergency at any time day or night. Arriving at patients faster and beginning treatment is key to raising their chances of survival, and ambucycles are the key to arriving faster. The concept of the ambucycle came to life during a terror attack in the crowded Jerusalem neighborhood known as Beit Yisroel. This neighborhood is known for its narrow and crowded streets. On March 2, 2002, a Palestinian terrorist blew himself up in a suicide bombing that killed 11 civilians including two infants. Ambulance crews and medical volunteers rushed from all over to

provide assistance, but the streets were already full of hysterical pedestrians and drivers fleeing the scene and the rescue teams couldn’t get through the traffic for a lengthy period of time, preventing life-saving aid from reaching the injured and dying. Seeing the carnage and resulting traffic congestion, the idea was born to put medical responders with a full complement of equipment on motorcycles, allowing them to cut through the traffic and reach patients during the golden hour following illness or injury. Ambucycle responders receive fully accredited medical training and equipment appropriate for their level of caregiving. They also receive specialized driver training that

earns them certification to use their ambucycles at high speeds as emergency vehicles. The ambucycles all come equipped with lights and sirens, which drivers are allowed to employ, only after passing the extra level of training and an internal test. The volunteers who make up the organization are as diverse as the country, with volunteers coming from all religious and political backgrounds. “In the northern region, we have Druze, Muslim and Christian residents volunteering alongside their Jewish peers. In the South, Bedouins work handin-hand with other responders. The organization boasts six exclusively Muslim chapters across the country including Kfar Kassem,

Taibe, Shibli, Wadi Ara, Nazareth and east Jerusalem and large swathes of other chapters are mixed bringing responders from all backgrounds to work together. That is why our name says ‘united,’ that is part of what we do,” Beer declared. United Hatzalah has active branches in three other countries including Panama, Ukraine (Kiev and Uman) and in the United States (United Rescue of Jersey City, NJ). It has also built partnerships with other EMS organizations in Brazil, Argentina, India, Mexico, South Africa, and its model of lifesaving is being developed in more than a dozen others. Already, the concept of the ambucycle has been adopted in many of

these countries as well as in Zurich, Sweden, where a similar but smaller organization known as Hatzolah Zurich, has begun to employ ambucycles due to the results that were seen in Israel. The work that these organizations do is not aimed at being the transport vehicle to take an injured or sick individual to the hospital, but in being the immediate response to save critical seconds and begin treatment before an ambulance can arrive. In the case of mass casualty incidents (MCIs) or trauma, triage can begin, and immediate medical treatment can already be taking place before the ambulances arrive, enabling the ambulance teams to simply load the patients

onboard and transport them to the hospital for continued care. This model has stood up under real-life situations including terror attacks, natural disasters, and everyday medical emergencies such as car and bicycle accidents, illnesses and traumas. In Israel, the organization responds to an average of more than 1,000 calls daily. This front line of community-based EMS response is a force multiplier for emergency and disaster preparedness at the highest level and fulfills the Judeo-Christian value of “love thy neighbor.” Perhaps what is most impressive about the entire organization, is that all of its ser-

vices are offered completely free of charge to the patient. In the 12 years that the organization has been operational, none of more than 2,500,000 people who have been treated by its volunteers has ever received a bill. Instead, all of the money comes from donations from both inside Israel and international supporters. “I made the commitment when I began this organization, that no one should ever hesitate to call for emergency medical assistance because they can’t afford to pay an ambulance bill. Therefore, all of our services are free, they have always been free, and they always will be free,” Beer concluded.

“This is such a real International story of passion for life we are honored to tell.” Thank You, Ron Galletti

RIDER PROFILE: LaToyia Jones

A Hard-working Mother and Flight Attendant!

Although busy, I still find the time to ride my Ninja 300 as often as I can. I’ve been riding for four years and it’s truly a mental “getaway” for me and very therapeutic. Me, the bike, the road, it’s a feeling only a Born to Ride rider will understand. I’m very petite and I love to wear my boots with 5” heels when I’m on my Ninja. You can still ride and capture the essence of sexy while wearing lipstick

and heels on the bike! If you’ve ever wanted to ride, I would love to encourage you to get on a bike and go for it – why not!? I’m sure there’s a bike out there that compliments your body and personality type. I found mine! Grab a bike by the handles and let’s go! So, the million-dollar question is, are you Born to Ride? Spyke & Mike F.O.S

Hey there my windburned and tanned BTR friends. We’re coming into the end of summer and oh what a summer it’s been. We finally figured out the best way to handle the heat and rain in Florida. Mike and I just hang out at the pool or beach most days and then ride in the evening when it’s cooler. As for the rain, radar is our best friend. Mike has been Mr. Lucky as we’ve been able to miss 90% of it. I’m just waiting for us to be caught in that one downpour so I can squawk my parody lyrics to the old Gene Kelly song, “Riding in the rain, we’re just riding in the rain. Oh, what a glorious feeling, I’m happy again. I’m laughing at Mike so wet behind me. We’re just riding in the rain.” Every Wednesday, we’ve been managing to avoid the precipitation that hits the area and making it up to my favorite hangout, Quaker Steak & Lube. Scooter behind the bar always sets Mike up with an adult beverage and me with a basket full of chicken bones. I then get to enjoy hanging out on an empty one and chowing down on the remains. You humans like the worst part, the deep-fried skin, and meat. I like the best part, cracking the bones and digging out the innards. I say, ‘There ain’t nothing like eating the marrow from a chicken wing and the Lube cooks up the best in the business.’ Mike and I have heard every comment in the book, from me being a cannibal to that just ain’t right. But I was raised in the mountains of Virginia, real close to West Virginia, and Mike says, “It’s all good! She’s just enjoying some cooked cousin.” Like last month, Bill Church is going all out and hiring great bands for September. See his ad between these pages for the lineup. While you’re at the Lube, come over and say hi and get that Kodak moment with me on your hand or shoulder for your Facebook page or photo journal. I’m all about making people smile and having

happy memories. Mike blurts in, “Life just doesn’t get any better than this when your hanging with us and BTR at QS&L. And as a special surprise for Spyke’s closest friends, I’ve got F.O.S. patches for those who ask.” I cackle, ‘What do you mean by F.O.S.? Full of Stool? A patch about you! From Outer Space? I know you are weird, but I didn’t think you wanted people to believe that you are an alien! Fish Odor Syndrome? Maybe you should take more showers! Funky Old Soul? You do listen to 70s music way too much! French Onion Soup? That would be your brain alright! Feat of Strength? The only strength in your feet is the odor! I give up! Just tell me and our puzzled readers what the hell is F.O.S.’ Mike grabs his chin and replies, “Wow! I was having so much fun listening to you babble innuendos describing me that for a split second I totally forgot what the patch was all about. OK, it stands for Friends of Spyke. I had them made in your honor. It’s a profile of your beautiful splendor for those who care more about you than me and want to sport you around forever.” I squawk, ‘Great, now you’ve made a memory patch about me and I ain’t even dead! What are you thinking?’ Mike breaks in, “Whoa Spyke! It’s just the opposite. You have touched so many lives and I keep getting asked for a keepsake from you for them, so I came up with patches.” I turn and tell him, ‘Awwwww daddy, you’re the best!’ On Saturdays, we enjoy going up to Bert’s Barracuda HarleyDavidson for all the different shenanigans that they put on every weekend. Mike’s all about the free food and beer that they so generously giveaway, and I’m all about hanging with the employees and making new friends. We both enjoy the fun activities like pudding wrestling, watermelon eating contest, fashion shows, inhouse poker walks, theme parties, swap meets, BBQ’s, food trucks, and the free gifts that come with every demo ride. We just can’t wait to see the new store that is going up across from the Lube next year. Mike talked to Bert King about it a while ago and both were as excited as a seven-year-old on Christmas day! Mike breaks in, “Spyke, they started the Peterson’s Poker Run back up this month and we’re riding! It’s been a few years since the last one and this time no camping! I’ve hooked up with a few friends and we’re staying midway on Marathon Key. Due to the stupidity of a few, they are not having any bike parking, vendors, or bike shows on Duval St. this year. So, Key West is out of the picture.” “Finish up your story ‘cause it’s Wednesday and we’ve got to act like a politician and make our appearance at the Lube. I’ll get the Fat Bird out of the garage and secure your perch on it. Then I can get my knees in the breeze, your wings in the wind, and its wheels rolling down the road!” SPYKE

Christian Motorcyclists Association Have you ever gone on a Mystery Run, only getting the first check-in location to start the run with, and no clue as to the final destination? What a great way to spend several hours with friends and having the chance to determine just how good the ride leader for your group is at following hints (directions). Usually, the ride instructions are based on the odometer reading, as a way to determine how far one hint is from the next. Mystery rides can be a lot of fun if the directions are followed carefully, you can get a real sense of accomplishment. It is cool to find one’s way to the final destination, within a timed arrival. The camaraderie is strong, the good times are great, and it is an excellent way to have some fellowship. The above is all true; however, there is a potential downfall if the directions are not paid close attention. You find yourself not arriving at a checkpoint in an expected time, and that sad feeling of being lost can wash over the group, and especially over the ride leader. About the only thing that can be done in that situation is to make the dreaded U-turn, get back to the last checkpoint, and try again. The important thing is once the correction has been put into place, don’t look back! It is more important than ever to focus BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM

on where you are going and being careful to pay attention to the upcoming clues. Looking back will just make doubt and fear creep into one’s mind, and cause uncertainty and hesitation. Every aspect of our lives can be impacted by ones deciding where to put their focus, on the hopes of the future, or the failures and mistakes of the past. In Philippians 3:13-14, the Bible tells us, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Just like in a Mystery Run, one’s focus must remain fully on God and His perfect love. Just like in a Mystery Run, on occasion one will take a wrong turn in life, or misread a direction, calling for the need of U-turn. The good news, when we fail before God, He has already forgiven us, in advance. This doesn’t give us carte blanc to go against God’s Word but a way of forgiveness is already worked out. All you have to do is to call on Jesus to be your Savior, and to forgive you of your wrongdoings. Then, just like in a Mystery Run, look to where you were last on target in God’s Will and begin living for Him once again. Most of all, when you receive that wonderful forgiveness, don’t look back anymore, look to the future before you! With God’s forgiveness, you’ll have a great ride! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
