If you need to stop for a hazard, realize that braking distance is only one part of stopping. The three parts of total stopping distance are:

TOTAL STOPPING DISTANCE

1. Perception Distance 2. Reaction Distance 3. Braking Distance

Perception distance is how far you travel before you become aware of a hazard. You need full attention to know what is going on. The higher your speed, the more distance you travel while you perceive situations.

Reaction distance is the distance traveled from the time you become aware of a hazard until you apply the brakes. Again, higher speed equals more distance traveled. Braking distance is the distance you travel after applying the brakes. Higher speed equals more braking distance traveled while you are using the controls. If you are going 60mph, you are moving about 90 feet per second. How many seconds might it take to perceive, react and brake when acar pulls out on front of you.

How many feet will you travel? You can reduce risk by improving each part of total stopping distance. For perception, avoid being distracted and understand what is happening ahead. Do this by thinking What if? For more info, www.msf-usa.org

Wow, what an opportunity that we’ve been presented here with the Master Bike Builder’s contest in Gibsonton, January 2019. They already have an existing event there, it’s been going on 16 years and there’s no other rally like it. We’re going to have a bike builders challenge. It happens during the Gibtown Bike Fest, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So often, you guys go to shows and gotta pay $100 or whatever it is. You’re bringing a bike that you’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars on, tens of thousands of dollars, and

you’re going to pay someone else a few hundred dollars to show off your creation? So we have a minimal fee for that, but you come in and we’re gonna cater to ya. You get a packet and it will have all the information of exactly how we’re gonna run this show. What the classes are. How it’s judged and, in the end, you’re going to have in that packet, description of those classes and a judging sheet, so it’s different for the bike builder in that, when you come here you’ve already had a chance to judge your own bike. That should give you the opportunity to

When this show comes to a town near you, don’t miss it! More info: GibtownBikeWeek.com

maximize the sheet. And the judge’s sheet is relativity extensive. We’ll use for instance ... let’s say you build a bike that’s monochromatic. You don’t have a lot of chrome, you don’t have a lot of powder. But you’re gonna get a lot of points in paint, powder, coating, and stuff like that. You build a bike that’s a lot of bling. You’re gonna score where the powder coating guy did not. You’re gonna score in chrome. We’ve broken it out so it can be as fairly judged as it can because we want all the bike builders to compete on an equal plane. So we’re not just saying BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 15

your bike’s gotta shine or you gotta have this or you gotta have that. Every single person, regardless of whatever the class is, has a shot at winning our grand prize. And our grand prize is pretty impressive. You’re gonna get a really cool trophy that is custom made and it’s not made out of motorcycle parts or any of that. It’s built with aluminum, big cherry wood—solid cherry wood bases, they’re very impressive. You’re gonna win a cash prize, and that’s for everybody in all six of the classes, right! In the end, the guy who scores the highest, regardless of what class he’s in, is the overall winner, and that guy is gonna get an opportunity to compete at the AMD qualifier (American Motorcycle Dealer Show). Depending on what city it’s hosted at, we will be paying for that trip. Bob Kay has already given us that authorization to do it, and that’s a big deal. Your entry is paid. You’re guaranteed that your bike will be accepted. And that’s one of them deals where not everybody gets accepted. I mean I’ve competed in the thing and it’s tough, so being accepted and guaranteed a spot, that says a lot for whatever you’ve built! If you win at the AMD Show, you go to Germany to compete. We give you a transportation fuel allowance. Your hotel room is paid. One of the things that’s important here is to remember that we’re only going to take 40 bikes. So we’re gonna send packs out to guys who really want to compete, be represented by BTR magazine, be filmed for BTR TV and in the end everybody’s going to be recognized as an elite bike builder. That’s what it’s all about. So a lot of people say, “Well Jim, how do I find out about any of it?” Well, you just call up Born To Ride or visit www.MasterBuildersShow.com and you’ll be able to see the information that we’ll post up. You call them up or BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

me 727-504-3138 and say, “I’d like to get a packet.” And we’ll send a packet right out to you. Then once you receive your packet you don’t even have to get to the show we already want to feature ya in the magazine ads. Which is kinda cool because we want people to say, “These are the guys that are coming to the show.” It’s a big deal, and it helps the venue as well. On Friday night, when that show opens there’s going to be a VIP party. And that’s so people can come in, see the bikes ahead of time before anyone else gets to see them on Saturday and Sunday. And what’s that go back to? It goes directly back to making sure the builders are recognized for the quality of the creations they have built. And for me, it’s a respect thing. I’ve been a bike builder for almost 50 years and so for me, it’s all the respect in the world for all the hard work that you put in to building your Motorcycle. You get a wristband for the VIP party, we’ll have a buffet in there and of course, you know as you go along you have access to 30,000 or more people who are gonna be wandering through Gibtown Bikefest. When you’re setting up that day we’re gonna give you free lunch. So far so good right? Free lunch, free VIP party, big venue, exposure, custom trophies, cash, and an opportunity to compete on the world stage. But first, you win our show then you win the National Show. Then if you’re lucky to go there and win, you go to Germany with Bob Kay AMD Show. BTR: Well Jim, I wanna ask one thing. Let’s go over the six-classes and kinda tell us what they represent and what you’re looking for in each class. Jim: I think we’ve come up with sixclasses that will cover every motorcycle that a builder could possibly build.

And again, go back to that respect there’s not a lot of people who have a complete machine shop, right? So the bike they build may be from parts. So our very first class is ASSEMBLED FROM PARTS. And it’s exactly what it says. If assembled from parts, we’re gonna ask you where the frame came from, where the fenders and wheels came from. You’re not allowed to have a ton of fabricated parts on there. Some little brackets work, but we’re gonna recognize people for building really cool bikes that are building bikes basically out of their garbage or even their kitchen. And that’s the first category we have. It’s the most basic way to build a bike, right? You can start assembling the parts for a manufactured motorcycle because it is assembled from parts. However, there’s gonna have to be some serious custom work to a manufactured motorcycle. It’s all in the rules but it gives that garage builder guy an opportunity to do whatever he wants by putting some parts together ... build a bike. The second one is OLD SCHOOL. And it’s exactly what it’s called. If you’re a guy like me that favors the vintage motors: panhead, shovelhead, flathead, knucklehead. Anything pre-1980, I mean I’ve got bikes we raised from Honda CB750, Kawasaki 900, all kinda of stuff. If it’s pre-1980, you can bring that bike in, but it has to be assembled and it has to represent what the true builder would have been building pre1980. So on the bike, we’re not looking for tons of billet aluminum because there wasn’t any. And I can tell you that for a fact because I was there doing it. So you build it, you choose whatever motor, you bring the thing in, and enter the Old School class. There you go. Now for the guy that likes the old school flavor, but he likes the technology of whatever we have to

This event will benefit Racing For Orphans Charity, Sponsorships Available call: 888-795-5779

offer. We have a New School class. NEW SCHOOL is the same thing, it’s gonna have an old-school flavor but bring in your electronic ignition, bring in your billet aluminum. Bring in your custom cut wheels. And go from there and you’re gonna be in that New School class. Now for the other guys, one of the things that we never see at bike shows is a PERFORMANCE CLASS. And quite frankly the Performance class is in there because I’m one of those guys who like to do performance stuff. Those guys never get a lot of attention. So if you’re building performance bikes it’s got nitrous on it, it’s got some type of turbo on it, it’s got blower on it that can be complete competition bikes or just hot rod street bikes. We have a Performance Custom class. Jim: THE BAGGER CLASS, this isn’t like your standard Bagger class at your Ridein Show. This Bagger class is ... you’re knocking it out of the park. I mean these guys with baggers these days ... I mean we saw one at the ... I competed recently at Easy Rider in Charlotte. And there was a guy there with $32,000 worth of paint on his bike. Told me he had close to 150-grand in the thing. It’s so competitive of a class, a guy like that leaves without winning nothing. So that Bagger class is fairing; hard bags in the back. After that, knock yourself out. I don’t care if you gotta 35-inch front wheel or 36-inch, or whatever they’re up to now. And all kinds of paint and

sound system. You can do whatever you wanna do in that class. And lastly, there’s FREESTYLE CLASS. And we used to call this, Super Radical Custom and all of that but really, it’s freestyle. This is a bike that you’re gonna get and it’s realistically built every nut and bolt, every piece of metal on it. Everything is right from the ground up. Those are your six classes. Now if your

bike doesn’t fit in there, I don’t know what you’re doing cause we’re not doing

an antique bike show. That’s not what we’re doing here. We’re doing a real bike builder’s challenge, right? You can bring an antique bike to our Ridein show the Saturday, or on Sunday, but these people that are here having to spend ... I’m gonna say, tens, and tens, and tens of thousands of dollars. When you’re looking for a bike the guys at this show; they’re the cream of the crop. They’re the ones to go see if you wanna build a bike. So those are our six classes. And each one of those classes like we say will get a cash prize, the real cool trophy, and then the “head daddy-o” goes on to compete. But again, the most important part which is different than any other show. It’s not just the freestyle bike that’s eligible for the grand prize. It’s the guy that scores the highest on the overall sheet is gonna be crowned champion, so. BTR: Forty builders in that and then there’s gonna be a Ride-in show both days. Jim: Oh absolutely. Yeah, you gotta have the Ride-in show. It’s ... and the reason it’s both days is that many of the shops are just like mine. On Saturday I’m working so I can go to the Ridein show on Sunday. Some guys have Saturday off and they want to come in riding. You don’t have to be a builder. You don’t have to be anybody. You just got to have a really cool bike. BTR: How about the Ride in Bike Shows Saturday and Sundays? Jim: You ride it in. It’s exactly what it says. Ride the thing in. We got, I think it 10 different classes and there’s an Antique class and Sportster class. I’m not gonna list them all, but it’s the standard stuff you’d see. However, judged by professional bike builders. And really-really cool trophies. No plastic stuff. You get what you pay for. So again ... and if you’re there early BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

enough for the Ride-in show when we take the buffet out on Friday night to start the Ride-in show. The first Ridein show, builder’s bikes will be put inside with the custom builder guys. So I mean, if you’re a guy with a really cool bike and you just wanna hang out with the best. Here’s your opportunity. Realistically ... this is a bike builders’ competition as I’ve said before. I think what they ... you need to understand is ... we’re gonna ask ya for pictures of the build. We’re gonna make sure that you’re actually a builder that you’re not a guy that went out and bought a 10-million-dollar bike someplace and you put it in. You have to be a builder. You submit it. You call us, we send you an invitation and you’re set to go. Everything comes in one package, but once we have accepted your bike you can email those pictures to us. We look at them, we email you back, “Hey you’re accepted.” We send you an actual packet so that you have something from us. Inside will be your invitation that you must have to be in the show, so you bring that with you. Once you get your packet you’re ready to rock’n’roll and it’s that simple. I just wanna tell all the builders I think this is a respect thing for me. The amount of time and effort you guys put in. And the bottom line is I think it’s about time ... and thankfully, Born To Ride agrees. It’s about time that we gave builders a show where they can really shine and then show them how much we appreciate it. Other than that, guys come on, ‘Let’s get 40 of the best bikes around The Southeast I guess, right? Come on down, let’s have a party. Look at some really cool bikes. Send somebody off to win all the marbles, man!’

Jim: Well you know that it is powerful, exactly. Bob’s been around forever, worked with the AMX Expo in presenting the Championships of America show. Is involved with the biggest bike shows in the world, the AMD Challenge, and this is the guy who runs them. So when he puts enough faith in Born To Ride and what we’re doing with this show, I mean, for me alone, I’d like to be able to take that and frame it and put it on the wall. You know, because this guy is literally saying, “Hey we trust you enough that you’re gonna pick a bike that can compete with what we’re used to.” So, and even for the builders, I mean to get that opportunity, I think their National Championship for the AMD qualifier was in Cherokee this year. And to be able to receive that trip guaranteed with the possibility of going there and winning, wow! And then you get an all ... I mean the possibility on that is endless, so for Bob Kay to be on board and give us that endorsement. You can’t say enough about that. BTR: So what you’re saying is they’re gonna get a lot more than just a trip if they win or just being a part of it is going to be a great experience, wouldn’t you say?

Jim: Well I mean, the overall experience for the whole thing, from the start is ... if I’m a bike builder and I am; I think somebody calls me up and says, “Listen I’m doing a big cash bike builder show. I’ll like you to be part of it.” That in of itself tells the builder that somebody cares. Then when you bring in an organization that qualifies a bike for the AMD ... you’re gonna enter ... and I guarantee you it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. So again, having that endorsement it’s a lot of stuff, man, so I’m hoping that one of BTR: To have Bob Kay, who is an icon in the business and maybe you can our guys whoever we pick is the overall winner and goes up there and knocks it tell people how powerful Bob Kay is? out of the park. Be a part of this show How his endorsement of our show is a call Reverand Jim. 727-504-3138 stepping stone to his big show.

The MotoAmerica motorcycle road racing season wrapped up at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama this past weekend, in two days marked by devastating crashes, fierce competition, the retiring of a legend, and the crowning of the 2018 champions. An epic weekend to end an epic season. With most class championships sewn up by the New Jersey round earlier in September, the MotoAmerica staff BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

nonetheless predicted stiff competition across the two days of racing, with riders battling for the remaining points and podiums, and their drive to finish strong for their teams. The predictions were spot-on. Though 2017 Superbike champ Toni Elias lost the points war across the season to soon-to-be crowned 2018 champ Cameron Beaubier, Elias won the battles both days on the track, winning both Superbike races to finish the season with nine wins,

surpassing Beaubier’s eight on the year. In fact, Beaubier violently crashed out of race 1 on lap 14 of 21, while engaged in a three-way struggle for the lead with Elias and Josh Herrin. Race 2 saw Beaubier and Elias battle the entire race, in a veritable grudge match for victory, Elias only claiming the checkered by .333 of a second over the 2018 champion. Again, Georgia’s own Josh Herrin rounded out the podium in 3rd. Supersport saw a similar scenario

between guaranteed 2018 champ JD Beach and Hayden Gillim, as Gillim, with no chance to catch Beach in the points, doggedly bit down on the lead in both races, and never gave them up. Gillim claimed the podium in both, relegating the soon-to-becrowned Supersport champion to the number two rung, followed by Valentin Debise, who is sure to be back chasing the championship next year. Supersport also witnessed one of the

most violent crashes of the season, when two mid-pack racers, Max Angles and Jordan Pence, tangled down the front stretch at full throttle. Both riders and bikes collided and careened at well over 100 mph, one down the track with other riders swerving and dodging, the other tumbling into the grass, bike flipping wildly by, narrowly missing the already injured rider. In Junior Cup, the young Frenchman Alex Dumas added an exclamation

Story: Rob Brooks, Photos: MotoAmerica point to the 2018 title he had already earned, claiming victories both days in sheer domination of the class. He was untouchable, from green light to checkered. Andrew Lee capped off his championship in Stock 1000 with another win, and Chris Parrish took the Twins Cup title by a mere 3 points over Jason Madama. *Of particular note- Roger Hayden, of the legendary Hayden racing family and younger brother of the late, great Nicky

Hayden, retired at season’s end, after more than 20 years of fierce competition. With his retirement, a page turns in American motorcycle road racing history, with Roger being the last remaining of the immediate family who still competed professionally. He will be sorely missed. And with that, one of the most memorable race weekends concluded one of the most memorable seasons for MotoAmerica. The Barber round saw 140 registered riders across all classes, a world BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

road racing record in the last 15 years. With all the concerts, stunt demos (Tony Hawk Experience, Wall of Death, etc.), and kids activities at each race weekend, MotoAmerica has created an almost “country fair” carnival atmosphere, with something for everyone to experience and enjoy, as well as great racing. MA president Wayne Rainey summed up the season- “This was our 4th year, and I think we’ve come a long way. The sport was in pretty dire shape when we took it

over, but support is growing, promotion is paying off, more manufacturers are coming on board, and some of the top World Superbike and MotoGP riders are inquiring about ‘finding a seat’ here to race, so we’re excited. Our fans have been great, lots of positive talk about the championship as a whole, so from where we started to where we are, it’s massive.” The 2019 MotoAmerica season will kick off again at Road Atlanta and Born To Ride will be there.

What a way to start the month of October than with a trip to the mountains of eastern Tennessee for the TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLES and MUSIC REVIVAL at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills. October 4th thru the 7th, I had the pleasure of attending this great and unique BTR 42 | BORNTORIDE.COM

event. What an awesome location this event was—southwest of Nashville with some great riding around the entire area. There was RV and tent camping galore with lots of space on the beautiful grounds of the Ranch. The Motorcycle portion of the Revival offered all kinds of fun and

excitement from the BC Moto Invitational, Hillbilly Flat Track Racing, Rhett Rotten’s Wall of Death and all kinds of Biker related vendors. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles had their Demo trucks set up offering test rides on the new 2019 models. Then there was the BC Moto Invitational,

which featured over 40 Bike Builders from around the country and their incredible 2-wheeled rides set on display in a beautiful horse barn, with a custom bike in each and every stall. Walking through the barn and viewing these amazing machines and meeting the builders was certainly a

different way to look at a motorcycle buildoff, but yet very entertaining to say the least. There were many other activities on the grounds to check out beside the Bike related ones, like the Loretta Lynn Western Town featuring a Country Store, the Loretta

Lynn Museum, Loretta’s original Tour Bus, the Art Gallery and Camp Store at Stagecoach Hill. There was even a gun range where you could shoot everything from Carbines, Shotguns, Belt-fed and Sub-machine guns! Plus, there were Specialty Food Trucks offering

Chuck Liddell was born on December 17, 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. In Hollywood he is known for his work in Movies, such as Kick-Ass 2 (2013), War Pigs (2015) and How High (2001). Prior to his film work he was an Iconic MMA UFC World Light Heavyweight Champion. He is one of the Fighters who put UFC on the map. Chuck Liddell became one of the most recognizable Global Sports Superstar Figures to crossover into TV Commercials, Appearances, Movies and more. It’s an Honor to have him part of the Cast of Nation’s Fire and to top it all off, he is a Legitimate down to Earth True American Success Story. When we asked him about Nation’s Fire he said “It’s Gonna Knock You Out!” BTR 52 | BORNTORIDE.COM

RG: So here we are at Nation’s Fire filming with Chuck Liddell on the set in Burbank, California. Man, it’s great to have you here. What did you think about the movie and your part as Vito? Chuck Liddell: Oh, it’s been fun. It’s another chance for me to get killed in a movie, so it was good working with everybody and I think it went well. RG: So you’re playing a role with Krista Grotte and her husband in a pretty heavy-duty scene, and Krista’s been nailing it on this movie. How did you feel about working with Krista? Chuck Liddell: Oh, it made it real easy. It always helps me when someone’s great across from me to make me look better. So I’m still a little bit new to this and getting more and more confident with it, but it always helps to have someone across from you delivering their lines and making it easy. She is very talented.

RG: Being on the set today, it’s a little different from in the ring. How have you adapted to getting into acting? Chuck Liddell: Well, the way I’ve adapted, I think I take stuff from training for fights. It’s the same thing, you know. It takes practice. It takes work. It’s hard, and I practice at home. I take classes. I do work. I’ve been working on my craft, and I’m just hoping that each movie, I get better and better. I’m enjoying it. RG: So being a warrior in the octagon brings you closer to being able to take care of business on the set because it is a lot of preparation? Chuck Liddell: Yeah. It’s all the same stuff. You want to be really good at what you do. You got to practice. You got to work. No one gets there without hard work and dedication. So I try to put all that effort and things that I used to put into fighting into my acting roles and characters. RG: Your acting career could go a long way

with this. You could act forever, man. What are some actors who have inspired you? Chuck Liddell: Well, I always like watching the big action things. I like guys like ... well, I mean, the Rock’s a big one. He’s one of the biggest actors out there right now, came from WWE, and just a great guy and fun to watch in his movies. He’ll do anything, from the tooth fairy to being a tough guy, so I kind of want to model my career and to do something like that would be great. I want to be able to do funny stuff. I’m more of a comedian guy, a comedic movie guy anyway, so I like to do that. I’m open for anything. RG: What about a couple of your favorite movies you like to watch or that have inspired you? Chuck Liddell: Okay, movies that inspire me. Well, it’s pretty obvious, Gladiator was an awesome movie. I loved what that one— he’s fighting for his family and fighting for revenge. For Love of the Game is a great movie. I think, kind of going back over a

guy’s career and trying to finish up on a high note is fun to watch. I like a lot of movies. I like it with a message, so movies like that, to me, stick out. RG: I know you have younger children. How about those kids’ movies? We all have to watch them with our kids a lot, and there are some good ones out there, right? Chuck Liddell: Oh, there are some great kids’ movies out there. I think The Croods is one of my favorites. I actually really liked The Smurfs movies, the first and the second one. The Smurfs movies were a surprise because I never liked the Smurfs when I was a kid, the actual show, but I liked those movies, they actually turned out being pretty good. They were entertaining for me. I like the movies that my kids really love but also have a little bit of the fun in it for parents. Those are the good movies to watch. RG: You can’t have a movie without a writer, without a director, man. What do you think of this Thomas Churchill guy you got to work with today?

Chuck Liddell: Well, he’s made it easy to work with him. He really helped, gave me good advice on how to read the character, how he wanted it. He had a very good idea of what he wanted, which always helps let me know what he really wants to get out of me, and I think that helped. RG: Man, I tell you what. Chuck Liddell, you look pretty awesome on camera, and it was really an honor to have you in this film. I can’t thank you enough, from the cast to the crew, and everybody coming in and just being such a great guy and a great team player for this. Any last words? Chuck Liddell: I just wish everybody the best and hope this movie turns out great. I thought it was a great story, so it should be good, matter of fact it’s gonna knock you out! Thank You Chuck it was my pleasure doing this interview with you and I can’t wait to see you as Vito in Nation’s Fire.

Spyke & Mike God Save The Kin

Hey, there my BTR friends. Most of y’all know that this month, in particular, Thanksgiving is not my favorite time of the year. For over the past quarter-century I have had to sit back and watch the madness of humans devouring my cousins. Now I’m doing something about it. I’ve come up with a new cause: To lower turkey consumption this year and in future holiday seasons. You, humans have Save the Ta Ta’s; I’m going to start Save the Tom Tom’s. Mike babbles, “Now Spyke, how are you going to save a turkey if you’ve never seen one alive? What cockamamy plan is bubbling up inside your birdbrain?” I cackle, ‘The only thing bubbling around here is the tall boy in your hand. Anyways, it’s a little late to ride out to a farm and rescue one, but we can give him one last flight without effort. Kinda like a parade ride for the ole bird and way better than a NASCAR victory lap. Now when people see him riding with us, hopefully, they will think twice about what to serve on Thanksgiving and choose a rib roast or pork chops. This way, his life that was terminated will make you humans think that even Chinese take-out would be a good alternative on that dreaded day and save others from the same demise.’ Mike replies, “Cool, will all the turkeys that make it past Thanksgiving get a new name?” I question, “Maybe, what are you thinking?’ Mike screams, “Lucky!” I ruffle my feathers BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM

and cackle, ‘Dude that’s a good one! In honor of all those Lucky’s out there after T-Day, I’m going to change my ringtone to wing wing wing!’ Mike raises his cold one and says, “They should change the name of Thanksgiving to something more fitting like Turkeypocalypse or Gobblegeddon.” I raise one wing in the air and screech, ‘I think we should ride by the turkey farm, go really slow, and you cry out: Liberty, Equality, and bad aim for all. Then, we’ll make one more pass by and I’ll howl at the top of my lungs while flapping my wings, God save the Kin!” Mike chatters, “Finally a great idea bubbles out of your fluffy head. I’ll go and purchase a non-survivor. We’ll name him Tom in his honor and set him up for the awareness rides plus.” I question, ‘What plus is bubbling under that blonde hair of yours?’ Mike babbles, “Well Spyke, since he’ll be cruising with us around town as we do drive-byes of all the grocery stores and meat markets, he can also join us for the ride out to the farm. That way, if we get close enough to the coops, the nestlings can take a good look at what will become of them if they don’t get to be called Lucky. Or better yet, maybe the hens will get the picture and, under cover of the night, grab their poults and jakes then sneak off into the wild.” I squabble, ‘They can join the National Wildlife Foundation’s list of saved turkeys. Someone will put them in the turkey witness protection and awareness program and they’ll live the rest of their lives promoting Save the Tom Tom’s and a turkey-free Thanksgiving!’ Mike smiles and says, “That would be nice, but I don’t think they’ll make it across the road.” I scratch my head and ask, ‘What do you mean?’ Mike responds, “Come on ding-dong, you know only chickens cross the road!” Mike gets Tom secured on the Fat Bird 2 and we head out to the country. He stops at a busy little bar just before the turkey farm. Leaving Tom on the scoot, we head inside where they’re having a contest about who’s written the best essay describing what Thanksgiving means to them. With a ‘what the hell are you two doing here’ look, the bartender serves Mike a cold one and I get

pineapple juice. On stage a tall, overweight, farmer dude wearing torn coveralls and sporting a straw hat starts reading: Oh, turkey dear Oh, turkey dear How lovely are thy feathers? Oh, turkey dear Oh, turkey dear There could be nothing better! We celebrate Thanksgiving Day By putting your carcass on display Oh, turkey dear Oh, turkey dear You thought we’re friends who came to greet you Oh, turkey dear Oh, turkey dear Really, we’ve gathered here to eat you! Oh, turkey day Oh, turkey day The family is all together Oh, turkey day Oh, turkey day We’re still a bunch of fickled feathers Oh, turkey day Oh, turkey day Being with family is so fab We’ll see ya’ll again soon in rehab Oh, turkey day Oh, turkey day We’ll drink away your memory And kick off the Holidays Eating leftovers and watching football.

The crowd goes wild. We both look at each other and Mike says, “I don’t think we’re making any friends here. The two guys at the end of the bar with knives and forks in their hands have been staring at you the whole time. We’re done like the pop-up timer in a turkey’s breast and need to get the flock out of here.” Mike picks me up and hauls ass towards the door with the two guys and half the bar following closely behind. He throws me on the Fat Bird 2, makes sure Tom is strapped in and fires it up. He then gets my wings in the wind, his knees in the breeze, and its wheels rolling down the road while I’m squawking ‘God save the Kin’! SPYKE Do you have a Favorite Pet like Spyke? Vampire Cult in Las Vegas? While Odds & Stakes could be the name of a vampire cult in Vegas, or the latest Goth band, for most of us those two words have a very different meaning! Would it be overkill to say that Odds & Stakes could literally be referring to a matter of life and death? People tell me that crime is going down, the odds you’ll be attacked is low. They are partly right. Some crimes went down 40% from 1997-2010. But, what they don’t tell you it is still up 400% from when most of us were kids. The odds 20-27% of women between 18 and 22, experienced undesired sexual contact (or rape), 70-80% of women, did not experience that (yet). (for guys the numbers are lower, but not much) The Stakes ER visit (1 night): $984 Counseling: $75/hour Lost time from work: $500-$1000 Meds for anxiety: $500/month Using a gun is not always the answer, BUT when it is the answer, it is the ONLY answer! If you are going to have a gun, get trained in safety and proficiency. However, there are a lot of times when you can’t have a gun when you need it (when you are under 21, or you are in a prohibited location), and even if you have it, either you do not have the time to get off that life saving shot, or there are innocent people in the line of fire and you can’t shoot. That is when you need options that do not include a gun. We provide training in how to stay safe with or without a weapon. Will you live with the odds, or prepare for the stakes? Christian Motorcyclists Association discovered some paths through the woods, would stand up and say, “Hey everyone, follow me!” Most often when a person offers to lead a ride whether on the road or in the woods, he is familiar with the route because he has ridden it before. That’s not always true, however. For example, I remember the time I’ll never forget when I was on the back of an enduro bike and hanging on for dear life, I yelled to my friend asking him where the trail was. He responded, “There is no trail, we are making one!” That’s an exciting Road Captain leading an exciting ride! There is One who is the ultimate Road Captain, He who has experienced every possible roadblock, challenge, or hazard in life. There is nothing He hasn’t experienced, no problem He does not understand, no pain or temptation He hasn’t lived through. His name is Jesus. In the Bible, in Matthew 4:19, Jesus said, “Come follow me”. He wants to lead His people, He wants to show everyone the way, and help people overcome the obstacles and roadblocks in life. Being that He is the Son of God, He has felt every emotion or frustration that any man could ever go through. Simply put, He understands! Best of all, He is calling to each and every one of us to follow Him. The Bible shows us that He will lead us through the valleys of life as well as the mountaintops of joy, Jesus is always there! With a Road Captain like that, we have no need to worry! When He calls out to you to “Come follow me,” you can trust Him all the way! One of the great joys of riding with a group is the sense of camaraderie and great sense of freedom on the ride. This is in part due to having a seasoned volunteer that is willing to serve as the Road Captain, one who stands up and says, “Follow Me!” When you ride with an individual serving as a Road Captain, your route has been planned, reviewed, and in some cases, already ridden in order to make sure that there are no roadblocks along the way. No matter how good one’s mapping software may be, or how accurate the Road Captain’s GPS may be, there are always last-minute challenges that can create the opportunity for change and adaptation. Sometimes the Ride Captain may tire or his bike may develop a mechanical problem and a volunteer will step up, saying, “Follow me!” I remember when I was in school that a few friends would get together and go for a ride in the woods. There were no roads, lots of hazards to jump over or bouncy trails to rattle our kidneys, but what a great time we had. Once an area was explored, there was always one individual that, having BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM
