THE SLEEPY COMMUTER

You’re riding your motorcycle to work just after sunrise, traveling down a typical suburban street lined with car-filled driveways. As you approach one of these driveways a car begins to move and backs out directly into your path. You brake hard and come to a stop just inches away from its rear bumper. Strategy: Given the hour of day and the type of neighborhood, you could have expected to encounter at least a few drivers backing out of their driveways and heading off to work. Other clues include drivers getting into their cars as you approach, or a tell-tale puff of exhaust warning you that the car has been started and is preparing to leave. Watch for brake lights and backup lights, too. If you observe any of the above warning signs, take the following precautions: Slow your pace and prepare to stop, if necessary. Keep your eyes up and cover the front brake lever and rear brake pedal. Stabilize your speed so that if the car does begin to move out into your path, you have sufficient space to stop. If there isn’t room or time to slow to a stop, scan for an escape route to swerve into. If there is no oncoming traffic, swerve to the left; if this route isn’t available, consider swerving to the right. For more info www.msf-usa.org

Eight years ago, I was a harried business owner of a $20 million advertising and PR agency, juggling the roles of biz exec with that of wife, soccer mom, parental caregiver, writer/editor, and boating industry activist. My world embodied a frenzied rush of deadlines, with no time for hobbies or personal passions. I was just another highly charged workaholic running through the maze, trying desperately to maintain sanity while pursuing the elusive American dream. And then, I took a motorcycle ride. My creative director and I were in an allday strategic session for a national boating account based in Saint Augustine, FL, meeting with client Jim Krueger, a great guy who happens to be an avid biker. He used to cruise in for occasional agency meetings, dressed to thrill in his biker gear. I casually mentioned I’d love to take a spin, so he invited me to bring close-toed boots and a pair of jeans to our next meeting. That day had come and I was ready.

Photos and Story by: Wanda Kenton Smith Suffice it to say, my first adult motorcycle and the dawn of a fulfilling new life. Some adventure sparked and ignited every last cell say I had a midlife crisis. Call it what you in my entire body! Jim didn’t simply take me may, I believe it was the most wondrous for a 10-minute loop around the complex as watershed and pivotal turning point of my I’d anticipated. He rode from Saint Augustine entire existence! Nearly a hundred thousand to Daytona Beach as sunset graced A-1A, spectacular miles have come and gone the sun a dazzling orange orb suspended since that inaugural ride. I’m on my second on a purple horizon, with turquoise waves Harley, a purplicious Screaming Eagle CVO lapping the shore. This breathtaking bliss Fat Boy trimmed in silver and red, dripping erupted into rumbling thunder as we rolled in chrome, with a custom purple crocodile onto Main Street for my surprise debut seat and purple leather fringes. (Did I at Daytona Bike Week. I was stunned … mention the purple helmet and braids?) clueless… and enraptured by it all! As the national marketing columnist for the It was then and there that I fell hopelessly boating industry’s leading b2b, Soundings in love with all things motorcycling. Trade Only, since 1998, I have chronicled When I arrived home late that night and some of my motorcycling experiences in rousted my sleeping husband, I was beyond my articles. I quickly discovered many of excited to share my experience! He looked my boating industry colleagues share the at me as though I’d lost my mind, and addiction. And so, in 2013, I launched the said as much. roads with special boating activities. I enlisted my good pal and bike daddy Jim Krueger to plan the route, while I managed the trip logistics, sponsorships, boating events and publicity. About 22 boating industry executives and friends came along for the ride, which ran from the Florida Panhandle to the Natchez Trace, to the plains of Texas; through the snow and sleet of Taos, New Mexico, to the glitzy lights of Vegas; from the Grand Canyon to the sun-drenched Palm Desert and parched Mojave; to the final celebratory splash down in San Diego. Indeed, it was a wildly successful ride and truly, one hull of a tour! Before it ended, the topic had turned ‘deuce.’ This past May, 30 boaters and bikers participated in Hull of a Tour² The Freedom Ride, an epic 2,000-mile, nine-day adventure from Sarasota, FL to Washington, DC, sponsored by Freedom Boat Club, Hurricane Boats and our industry media sponsor, Soundings Trade Only, where I posted ride excerpts in a daily blog. BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Our theme, “The Freedom Ride,” served up more than a catchy title. Our boating events were hosted by multiple Freedom Boat Clubs. The kick-off breakfast was staged at the downtown Marina Jack docks in Sarasota, FL, where local TV documented our departure. In Saint Augustine, we rode aboard club boats to the city docks and toured Flagler College, lunching in the private president’s dining room, followed that night by a sponsored dinner on the waterfront in Savannah at Bahia Bleu Marina, with a late night toast at the famous Riverwalk. En route to the Outer Banks, we feasted on scrumptious barbeque chicken at Harbour Gate Marina in North Myrtle Beach. However, the boating pinnacle had to be the cookout and boat ride in Annapolis. We anchored in the bay and watched a command performance of the Blue Angels as they buzzed directly overhead while performing for the U.S. Naval Academy’s annual commissioning ceremony. Sweet! Our freedom theme also encompassed a tour of the U.S.S. Yorktown in Charleston, SC, along with two relaxing ferry rides

from Ocracoke to Cape Hatteras, NC. We stopped at Kill Devil Hills to view the national monument honoring Orville and Wilbur Wright and the Kitty Hawk. We toured the Harley-Davidson Factory in York, PA and later that afternoon, visited the historic Gettysburg Battlefield, dining at the historic Dobbins Tavern. We rode the glorious Shenandoah Skyway to Charlottesville, VA en route to Thomas Jefferson’s beloved Monticello, winding like a colorful ribbon along the curvy elevation. Nothing more exhilarating than finding “the pocket” and grooving through those thrilling twists and turns! Finally, we ambled through the lush Virginia countryside before reaching the nation’s capital for an unforgettable Memorial Day weekend. We were here to ride in Rolling Thunder, the 900,000-motorcycle behemoth that runs from the Pentagon to the Viet Nam Memorial Wall. It is the largest peaceful demonstration in the nation with its focus on the MIA and POW issue, while recognizing veterans and military. Our hardy band joined the local HarleyDavidson dealership for an escorted ride to

“The memories of the freedom ride are forever part of my life tapestry, woven together with

the Pentagon where we parked in one of four lots set aside for this event. We hung out nearly five hours to ride the 25-minute route, but it was well worth the wait. We exchanged stories with bikers from all over the country who had come for this event and purpose. The positive camaraderie and good feelings roared to life when it was finally our turn to rev it up! It was impressive just how well organized the operation was as we hit the streets to the national mall. Hundreds of thousands of spectators of all ages ringed the roadway, waving flags, saluting, shouting cheers and supporting the troops in a unified show of patriotism like I’ve never witnessed. As we rode past the lone marine standing in still salute, I could no longer contain the tears. The image was so powerful! As the proud daughter of a 27-year career Navy officer, I can’t even begin to describe the palpable sense of patriotism I felt and experienced riding in this company. We decided to stop the next morning on Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery. We rose early and were among

the first to arrive, hopping a trolley to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was sobering, quiet and dignified. A few moments later, I stood alone atop a grassy hill, viewing in awe the countless grids of gleaming white tombstones fanned below. Again, I was swamped by an overwhelming sense of gratefulness. That afternoon, our Florida crew rode one last stretch together to Lorton, VA and boarded the Amtrak AutoTrain for our 17hour trek south to Sanford, FL. As I sat in my sleeper car that afternoon and into evening, composing my final trade blog, I saw the world outside my window pass by, eventually shifting from daylight into darkness. The memories of The Freedom Ride are forever part of my life tapestry, woven together with stitches of friendship, laughter and discovery. At the heart of it all, however, as with every ride lies the love of adventure, the call of the open road, and the ever-alluring growl of the throttle. They say the third time’s the charm, right? So it should come as no surprise that

Jim and I are already plotting the next big adventure. This time, we’re California dreaming, right on up the fabled Pacific Coast Highway. In essence, motorcycling has grounded me. Riding has spirited me far from the former humdrum and grind of daily survival to a happy, well-balanced life that is bursting at the seams with joy and exuberance! No matter the destiny—from exotic ports of call to desolate local backroads, from amberhued plains to majestic mountain vistas—my soul yearns for freedom and the blessed escape that only my two wheels can deliver. In their book, Jean Davidson and her son, Jon Davidson Oeflein, share a very personal glimpse behind the scenes of the great Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Together, they have gathered little-known stories such as the tale of how the young Arthur Davidson and William S. Harley saw the curvaceous French performer Anna Held finish her vaudeville act by riding a motorcycle across the stage in 1901. Could that have spurred the young men to build their first motorcycle or was it just their desire to get to their favorite fishing holes easier? Also included are over 250 photographs collected from numerous sources including: family members, personal collectors, rare magazines, longtime H-D employees and dealers, and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company Archives. Enjoy this entertaining and revealing portrait of the men and women who created America’s legendary motorcycle! JEAN DAVIDSON is an internationally known author and speaker. She is the granddaughter of Walter Davidson, one of the founders and first president of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Her father, Gordon Davidson, was the vice president of manufacturing. For many years, she and her husband, John, owned the largest HarleyDavidson dealership in Wisconsin. She chose not to work at the company but to be a teacher of children with special needs. She is known as the Davidson family historian and has written numerous books on the family history. In 2006, her four year old grandson, Ryder, was lost in a tragic

water accident. Since then, Jean has developed a children’s safety program called Yell and Tell which is spreading around the world. Jean now combines her Harley-Davidson book travels with spreading this life-saving program. Jean lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin close to where it all began in her great grandfather’s shed. For more information about Jean go to www.jeandavidson.com and please visit www.yellandtell.com to help save the lives of our children. JON DAVIDSON OEFLEIN is the greatgrandson of Walter Davidson, grandson of Gordon Davidson and son of Jean Davidson. His father, John H. Oeflein, was a HarleyDavidson dealer for many years. Working at this dealership is where Jon learned about motorcycles and life. Jon inherited his father’s motorcycle collection which he continues to maintain, restore, and expand. Jon is also a member of the Badger Heritage Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. Jon, his wife Kristi, and two sons, Nicolas and Carter, live in the great state of Wisconsin. Jon loves to ride his motorcycles over the very same roads that his relatives did while they were building the family business from a shed to a legacy. Jon and his mother, Jean, have collaborated on numerous other projects including the book, Riding Back in Time on My Daddy’s Harley-Davidson. Jon loves to share his family history through books, multi media productions, freelance articles, and speaking engagements. For more information about Jon please visit www.jondavidsono.com

Bell Helmets—60 years and going strong! All of us here at Born To Ride get opportunities to meet some remarkable people who are “movers and shakers” in the motorcycling world. I’m going to share with you some interesting facts about Bell Helmets! Interesting enough, my very first helmet was a Bell Helmet! Of course, it had to color-match my bike! But more importantly, Bell Helmets has been around a long time and it’s a name that most motorcyclists know. The reputation of the company stands alone! I had the opportunity to spend some time talking with Chris Sacket. Chris is the vice

president and general manager for Bell Power Sports. “I’ve been with the company for 11 years. I’ve held several roles with Bell; I came on in 2004 when Bell got back into the motorcycling business. Previously, they had leant this business portion of the company in 1991 so they could solely focus on bicycle helmets as well as building a bicycle brand of helmets. Unfortunately, for the next 14 years, the outsourcing company didn’t do the Bell Helmet company or product justice. Our company was started in America and needs to stay in America— keeping the American standard and ethos.” Bell realized that this prior decision was

hurting the Bell helmet—motorcycling division—and also saw that people weren’t recognizing the brand anymore because it was being run through the mill. In 2003, Bell brought the license back to North America. Chris was hired to resurrect it. In 2013, Bell came to North America worldwide! “In 2013, we started selling Bell motorcycle helmets again world wide—having them produced again in North America.” Chris is no stranger to motorcycling! “I started racing motorcycles when I was 4 then at 18, I started racing for a motorcycle shop. When I graduated high school and started college, I was hired at this shop

to run the parts counter. I quickly moved from parts to sales then sales to finance department then to the general manager. This store started out with three people and ended up with 120 people! It’s one of the largest motorcycle shops in the US! I convinced the two owners of the company to start manufacturing apparel, specializing in helmets first. With this job, I got to meet a lot of people while travelling. I had the opportunity to meet the CEO of Bell and he explained to me the on-going process of obtaining the rights of bringing Bell Helmets production back to the states.” From that conversation, Chris started his passion with Bell Helmets. Now in 2015, the Bell Helmet division is stronger than ever! “We have a full R & D (Research & Development) department, seven dedicated sales reps throughout the

United States, a products creation team, graphic designers, packaging designers, inside sales. We are probably the number 1 brand in the US and the number 4 brand in the world. Our approach to helmets and marketing is definitely unique. We don’t look at anyone else’s product; we do our own thing. If we set up at events, we do our own brand and appeal. This is who we are.” Chris and I touched on the point about wearing or not wearing a helmet. “Fifteen years or so ago, young kids that were into racing always wore their helmets. It’s now branched off into skate boarding and snowboarding and snow skiing. It’s just a part of the culture for them. Every country in the world has a mandatory helmet law except for the US. We don’t push helmets on people; I don’t believe in doing that. It seems like it’s getting more the ‘norm’ of

people wearing helmets—not specifically in motorcycling—but other sports out there today.” Bell was founded in 1954 by auto racing enthusiast, Roy Richter. Roy perceived the need for safety in the auto racing field and moved to put products in place to serve that need. “Roy was an innovator. He worked at Bell Auto Parts that was owned by a man named George Wright. So, Roy worked in Mr. Wright’s speed shop in Bell, California. Southern California was a hot bed for hot rod cars, street racing, and going to the local track and racing. Roy worked on these race cars. When Roy bought the business when George Wright retired, Roy had a lot of friends that were getting hurt or dying in the same year from crashes. He said, ‘I’m going to help my friends continue racing and

have them get a better chance of survival.’ So, the tinkerer and inventor that he was he came up with the idea of a fiberglass shell. In fact, the first helmet he came up with had a suspension system! That was 1954! Soon after that, 1956, he worked with a company developing helmets for the military. They invented one with Styrofoam. He worked with this company and basically bought them out. He came out with his first helmet; a composite shell with expanded poly styrene liner. They used this helmet in car racing, motorcycle racing—a crash helmet for anything. He came out with a half helmet for motorcycle riders, and then in the late 60s he designed the full face helmet—The Star. This came about when a car racer was struck in the face with a piece of shrapnel that came off another race car. They commercialized the full-face helmet and it became available in the 1970s. Then

motocross racers wanted full coverage as did motorcycle racers. But the dust was getting up underneath the helmet opening and making it difficult to see. So they modified the Bell Star so that the rider could wear goggles and wear the helmet as well. “We’re getting back in the motorcycle helmet game. But, we got the rights back again in 2004. We really kicked it into gear in 2010. Now, we’re global. We even have the custom-fit motorcycle helmet. We scan your head and make a helmet specific to your head shape. Just last month we launched a new helmet where it has three different types of foam, not just EPS, it has different densities to allow broad spectrum energy when the helmet has been hit. We are also the very first bicycle helmet company, and motorcycle helmet company. We are part of the larger company; we are focusing on managing energy better-

reducing head energy (impact).” I was really enjoying my conversation with Chris, but had to wind it down. I asked him to share some final comments about Bell and the future for this company. “I can’t tell you how much passion each one of us has in this business. There are some of us that spend 70-80 hours a week refining our business. We are very driven. You think that every member of the company owns this business just because of the passion and commitment each one has! We have a great team that is making it happen. It’s not about making the helmets and slapping a brand on it. We are about doing the right thing on American soil.” Thank you, Chris, for spending time with me in sharing with the Born To Ride readers, this amazing story about Bell Helmets! Susan Hurst

When I first met Dave Sandel the inventor of LOVE-JUGS and CEO Steve West at the V-Twin Expo Show in Cincinnati I must say I was not convinced they had “fixed” the problem of “HOT HARLEY’S.” I was so reluctant that I asked to move the interview to the last two hours of the last day of the show. I knew by then most everyone would have left to head back home and most exhibitors would be packing. So with no pressure from crowds and other manufacturers, we came back two hours before the show was to end. To my surprise there was Dave Sandel and Steve West smiling and waiting for us. I thought to myself these guys are nuts. Didn’t they know I was going to rip their product apart with questions about the truth of their claim and the reliability of this toy? It appeared they wanted to meet this challenge head on, and they were armed to

answer every question to my complete satisfaction. Before the first question, Dave Sandel boasted: “Hot Harley? Problem solved!” He continued, “Our systems are guaranteed to keep your oil flowing and your engine running significantly cooler, and that is guaranteed to make your ride cooler too.” A bit of history may help explain my hesitation to such a bold claim. The first Harley I rode any distance on was a 1965 Electra Glide. This “Blue Angel” was the coolest looking bike on the road at the time. However, riding this demon in south Texas in August was anything but cool. Since that time I have tried so many devices and gadgets. I can count the amount of money, time, and effort spent trying to find something to cool down my Harleys. Unfortunately those products did not meet my expectations! I love my Harley; I don’t want any other brand. I want to ride my Harley even if it’s in the high ’90s in Texas

and not have to wait until the sun goes down to go riding. I put the sleek new LOVE JUGS COOL-MASTER on our test bike and took off for a 2,068 mile test ride. I travelled through the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the easy flowing traffic of Atlanta (joke)—during rush hour traffic or through a construction site, where you can go 10-15 MPH for very short distances at a time. From Atlanta, I was off to Salem and Montgomery, AL. Then I was off for some open Interstate to run all the way to Vicksburg, MS. It was time to get off the fast track and do some back road riding up to Yazoo City, where I saw a sign that said fresh donuts and coffee. I thought to myself I know a great place for that, so I headed to the French Quarter to Café Du Monde, New Orleans, LA, for some beignets & chicory coffee. After I had my fill I headed back to Birmingham, AL, north to Nashville, TN and northeast to Cincinnati, OH. My LOVE JUGS fans withstood the harshest conditions I put them through. LOVE JUGS are 100% waterproof outdoor rated fan motors, and my trip confirmed that! If it was not raining it was as hot as Hades. The original model produces more than twice the cooling power of its closest competitor—while the new model packs even more punch. The more air, the more comfort for the rider and the more protection for your engine. This no nonsense sleek face gives the unit a finished custom look that is as at-home on a $100,000

custom bagger as it is on a 25-year-old Electra Glide. They will actually run while submerged underwater as can be seen on their website. http://love-jugs.com/videos/. Luckily I didn’t have to ride submersed under water! Believe it or not, some competing systems use indoor rated fans, which will short out when exposed to water— even during a washing. And yes, I do LOVE JUGS! I have had two Harley techs tell me because of the addition of the LOVE JUGS and an oil cooling system, I have possibly extended the life of the most expensive part of my Harley—the motor—about 50,000 miles. To me that is the best endorsement of any product I have ever given. And that is a great insurance policy and peace of mind for me. For more information, take a tour of the web site: www.love-jugs. com or contact: Hammerhead Engineering CEO Steve West at steve@love-jugs.com. He’ll be happy to speak with you.

READS BORN TO RIDE

Biker Movie Review

This month Born To Ride reviews the classic “On Any Sunday.” On Any Sunday is not a typical motorcycle exploitation film, but on the contrary a very positive motorcycle ‘sport’ documentary piece featuring Steve McQueen, Mert Lawwill, Malcolm Smith, and a cast

of hundreds of other motorcycle racers and enthusiasts. This 1971 expose was produced by Bruce Brown, and Steve McQueen, and features some very good cinematography considering it’s vintage. It also portrays motorcycle enthusiasts as ‘good guys’ instead

of the alternative. The opening scene shows a group of kids racing their bicycles, making motorcycle noises. Some credit this scene with the ‘creation’ of BMX, but I looked at it as a positive thing for the motorcycle community, as we watch our kids aspire to be like us as they grow older. This film leaves no stone unturned in the motorcycle racing world, covering everything from road racing to the “Widow Maker” hill climb. A good portion of the movie focuses on the career of Mert Lawwill who held the AMA number one plate for one grueling season, riding his Harley XR 750 in the flat track series. The film follows Mert through one of his bad years where multiple engine failures and other calamities cause him to lose the coveted number 1 plate to Gene Romero at the season finale in Sacramento. Mert didn’t just flat track it all the way through the film however. He and his costars, Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen are filmed in various situations in multiple divisions of motorcycle racing. Most know McQueen as an actor who would spend a lot of leisure time as an auto racer, but On Any Sunday will show you that he is a very accomplished motorcycle racer as well. On Any Sunday is often credited as the best and/or most important motorcycle documentary ever made. Roger Ebert says “It does for motorcycle racing what The Endless Summer did for surfing.” I agree with Ebert on this (for once we agree) but don’t forget that Bruce Brown produced both of these films, so that quote is more of an insult than a compliment in my opinion. On Any Sunday is available on a digitally re-mastered DVD and the “Directors Cut” edition comes with yet a second DVD which covers the making of the movie behind the scenes, the trailer, interviews and et cetera. This flick runs 96 minutes, and you will likely enjoy at least 90 of them! If you love motorcycles and racing, you will like this film! I’ll give this one 5 out of 5 stars for keeping me entertained without pissing me off!

I’ll Deal with Them When I Find Out!

Welcome to Hell! Well not really, but summertime in Florida can certainly make you feel like you have slid, sinned, and paid the ultimate price by burning up all day and most of the night. In other words—it’s pretty friggin hot! Along with all this heat comes some interesting problems every now and then, especially when you are out there burning up the asphalt on your motorcycle which simply adds to the heat. Most of us have experienced the typical routine maintenance issues that come along this time of year, but I ain’t never seen nothing like this $#!T!! While hanging out one day in my brand new trailer park (which is in the country and far-far away from the drama of the old one) I was relaxing in my new shop repairing a watch for a little old lady who stopped by, when I heard a terrible racket. Looking down the driveway I saw a cool looking rig approaching that was carrying a motorcycle. At first I didn’t necessarily recognize the bike, but for some reason I remembered the racket that was way too familiar from that old trailer park miles away from here. It was the sound of Spyke and Bird-Brain, uh—I mean Mike arguing about something that was unintelligible at the current distance. As the truck came closer down the driveway, I identified the Fat-Bird that I was also well familiar with and have seen hundreds of times. Still squawking at one another, Spyke and his counterpart bailed out of the passenger

side of the vehicle and approached my shop. “How the hell did you jokers find me out here?” I yelled at the pair as they got closer. “Well the people at the old trailer park ratted you out and gave us the general location of your new digs, so we thought we’d hunt you down and bring you some bidness.” “Dammit man, I thought I’d be free from the debauchery and trouble that you two bring, and what the heck did you do to that bike, and where the heck did you get that awful sunburn?” At this point Mike tries to give me some foolish story regarding drunken stupidity and loose women, but at this particular moment I realized that he was still recovering from alcohol and/or fame poisoning. Spyke on the other hand at this time was speaking more clearly than BirdBrain and kept repeating “wings in the wind— wings in the wind.” Mike slumped down on a stool in the corner of the shop and me and Marson unloaded the remains of the Fat-Bird and got her up on the lift. “Man, when is the last time you washed this thing?” I asked. “Well you see dude, we were just hangin’ out at the beach when this and that started leaking, knocking and generally going bad. So we figured that we would just get it here to you before she got on her last leg.” After looking it over for a few minutes, I realized that it wouldn’t be too serious of a job—even though most people in the biz would have written it off as a ‘total loss,’ so I immediately suggested that we just go somewhere that had relief from the heat and served cold beers. With Spyke and Mike still arguing, we loaded up in my hillbilly truck and headed down the road to the local Gentlemen’s Club. I swear that I can’t figure out which one of these two are more annoying, but for the

most part Spyke seems to make more sense, and if you had to ride around with these two for very long you’d probably want to have a sip of the Jim Jones lemonade. Thank gawd it ain’t that far to this joint and when you deal with regular domestic arguments most of your life, it’s a relief to have a diversion every now and then. Typically my life is simple and routine, but I suppose it would be totally boring if I didn’t get any outside entertainment like I do with when my two weirdo buddies come around to visit. I still haven’t figured out which rat at the old trailer park told these two where I was operating yet, but I will deal with them when I find out! An entertaining moment or two later, I just settled in and realized that stuff isn’t as bad as it sometimes seems. I did buy an older fellow a drink, and remembered my own birthday. He was celebrating a few more decades than I was recently, but I never mind getting older when I consider the alternative. I will let Spyke elaborate on the good time we all enjoyed while hanging out. You can read his version of this encounter a few pages away from this story. A lot of times people don’t agree with my philosophy or journalistic reports on current events. I am after all simply reporting the news or making a futile attempt at entertainment. At least Mike and Spyke can deal with it on a realistic basis and not try to do anything except be real about their elaboration on our unique lifestyle be it comprehensive or not. Soon they will be back on the road and annoying the biker community in their own special way—that is if Mike will sober up a little bit! Who am I to judge however? I celebrate every day with a cold beer and thank the lord that I have the ability to do that with my friends. Let’s all try to be more positive than negative and see how that works out. Stop by and see me sometime if you need some electrical/electronic (specialty) work on your scoot. That is if you can get Mike or Spyke to tell you where I’m hiding! So until next month, speed safely and be real. Craven BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69

Spyke & Mike Hey there my BTR friends! Mike finally has had enough of the sun, surf, and sand for a while. He recently devoted a full week to finding parts and having the scoot towed to a shop. Getting the Fat Bird back on the road required the services of our partner in crime, Craven Moorehead. Most of you may think he is just a writer/ promoter like Mike. But no, under that big burly disguise is a full blown Harley mechanic with many years of hands on experience and in-depth knowledge about the inner workings of a V-twin. His only downfall is that he frequently has a hard time finding a place to turn wrenches that will work around HIS schedule. But, once he starts on a project, not much can stop him except for the occasional scantily clad employee from the gentleman’s club carrying a cold twelve pack. He claims when working on bikes, he’s on union time and those breaks are necessary for his health and demeanor. Mike and I really don’t care, as long as the Fat Bird is fixed right the first time and ready to go when he says so. My good buddy Marson, owner of Know Tow, has got an awesome rig. He transports the scoot with great care over to Craven’s new establishment where he’s chomping at the bit to get started. Those two wrestle the bike around the shop and finally get it onto a lift. Breathing heavily, Craven says to us, “Yo dude and bird brain, give me a couple of days and a box of parts. I’ll soon have you both back on your iron horse, flying down the asphalt highways and over the concrete bridges to all the Born To Ride events.” I squawk, “That will make my day as I’ve been missing out on having my feathers in the wind!” Mike says, “And I’m in dire need of some saddle time. Being at the beach for so long has given me a bad case of sunburn, a nagging hangover, and more friends that I don’t care to see again.” I cackle, “Oh brother Mike, I think everyone on the beach will be happy to NOT see your burnt, stumbling, overweight body wandering aimlessly and

“I Still Have the Need for Speed”

blocking their sun any time soon.” Craven chimes in, “Okay you two, now you’re sounding like me and the ol’e lady. I’ve got a mind not as sharp as it used to be tucked away between my ears and ya’lls chatter is hurting it. My body is complete with two arms and legs and plenty of cushion for the pushin’. It has no bells or whistles but it does include a couple of tats and piercings that the ladies seem to dig. Both are crying out for nourishment, a change of scenery, and air conditioning. Let’s make like a nut and bolt on down to the gentleman’s club before happy hour is over and get us some grub, suds, and a view.” We sit at the stage and those two start enjoying libations and visuals as I feast on a bowl of peanuts. After a while, an elderly fellow plops down in the seat beside me. We hear him say to the hostess, “Hey darling, it’s my 80th birthday and I’m here to celebrate.” The lovely lady says “Well then, your first drink is on me. What’ll it be?” Grandpa states, “A shot of your best Scotch with two drops of water, my dear.” She quickly returns with the booze. He throws it back and lays the glass on her tray. Craven blurts out, “Yo there pops, slow down on the chugging. I wanna get you another one.” The geezer looks over at him and says, “Thanks sonny boy. But, I still have the need for speed ... drinking! Waitress, fetch me another Scotch and two drops of water please.” The bartender pours

the booze, dribbles in the water, and hands the server his drink. She gives it to him and he taps it on the railing around the stage, then shoots it down. Mike blurts out, “Wow ol’e man! You downed that like a pro! It’s my turn to get you one for your birthday.” The grey haired senior citizen waits until the waitress comes back and tells her, “This young buck is buying me another. One more Scotch with two drops of water, missy.” She comes back with his drink and asks, “Hey you old fuddy-duddy, why are you shooting Scotch with only two drops of water?” As he leans over close to her, his shirttail comes up and we see he’s wearing Depends. He whispers just loud enough over the music, “listen up my pretty damsel, when you get to be my age, you learn how to down your liquor. Holding your water well, that’s a whole other issue!” I cover my head with one wing and cackle, “I hope you two never get that bad.” Craven blurts out, “Please shoot me if I do!” Mike declares, “Leave grampy alone. Just because he’s a few bricks short of a load doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy life. We’ve all had enough to eat, drink, and see here. Let’s make like those dancer girls’ clothing and take off.” With that said, Mike picks me up and we head out the door with visions of us on the scoot, getting my wings in the wind and its wheels down the road. Recently my wife and I got to head to the hills of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia for a much needed vacation, followed by a bike rally. We were especially looking forward to spending time on the twisties, those mountain roads are phenomenal! The first night we planned out a route to take us through some winding roads that we have never ridden. It was beautiful with the valleys and farmland that stretched to the horizon. Our ride took us past a Krispy Kreme (yes, we stopped!)

and into a lush rainforest passageway, complete with a babbling brook that followed the road. We felt so totally at one with our surroundings. As we rode, we noticed, through the trees, mountain peaks that were shrouded in fog. Little did we realize that within 20 minutes we too would be in the fog! As we looked out over the magnificent mountain ranges, we realized just how insignificant we felt in relationship to the vastness of the Smokies. Later in the week we rode the Blue Ridge Parkway with some friends of ours who live locally. There were incredible roads, awesome vistas, and you could just feel God’s creative touch in all that we saw. After a few days there, we were off to the rally in Georgia, and more new rides. We decided to go for a ride to the highest point in Georgia, and all was going well until we had to do a 180 degree switchback, going uphill on a sharp angle. Made me nervous, but I was OK until the back tire hit a patch of gravel! There is no excitement in having the back end of your bike break loose unintentionally. For the rest of the ride up I was tense and totally undone. Then

we got to the lookout deck and God reminded me that He has it all in His control. I was doubtful about riding back down, but when the time came, a peace came over me and I actually enjoyed the ride back. We finished our vacation with another ride the next day. God gives us an incredible promise in His Word, in Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” I was focused on the fact that as a flatlander my riding skills were lacking, and for a moment, forgot Who created those beautiful mountains for us to enjoy. And what better way to enjoy mountains than on your favorite bike? God met me at my point of need, and loosened me up so I could ride back down that mountain road and find joy in the process. Perhaps that gravel was there to remind me exactly Who I needed to trust; either way, I got the message! When life gives you a rough patch, look to God for peace and protection in the challenge, He’s there have your back!! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
