Approaching a busy four-way intersection there are a lot of elements to monitor: cross traffic may or may not stop for the light; pedestrians could step out at any time; an oncoming car waiting to turn left could fail to detect your presence and turn left in front of you. Sure enough, just as you approach the intersection, the car in the opposing left-turn lane swings into your path. You brake hard and swerve at the last second, barely avoiding a broadside collision. Strategy: Without a doubt, this scenario is a frequent hazard for motorcyclists riding in urban areas. A common type of motorcycle crash (for sober riders) occurs during daylight hours, at low speeds (around 30 mph), when an oncoming vehicle turns left into your path. Again, when approaching an intersection with a vehicle waiting in the left-turn lane, your best bet is to assume the worst: that a car will pull out in front of you. Reduce your speed as you approach the intersection, either downshifting or lightly applying the front brake. Adjust your position in the lane to be seen better. Slowing will increase your safety cushion: slowing just 10 mph reduces your stopping distance significantly, and covering your brake greatly reduces reaction time. After you’ve slowed, continue to visually monitor the car in case it moves and forces you to change position or stop quickly. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

CUBA: EXOTIC. IN TRANSITION. THRILLING BUT MOST OF ALL: SURPRISING-EVERY TIME

Cuba from the perspective of a small, unique subculture; 50 portraits of people who have resisted the embargo for a long time and have kept their Harley-Davidson motorcycles neat and tidy. In 1967, the Government ordered all PoliceHarleys be buried in a hole in a prison in Santiago de Cuba for ideological reasons. Then, in the 70s and 80s, spare parts were nowhere to be found, so Cuban Harlistas cannibalized parts from Russian cars and adapted them according to their needs – pistons from Ladas and valves from Kamas, while exhaust pipes were made from old transformers. A Harley was only worth a tip, nobody wanted these big and expensive bikes. Especially not in the “Periodio Especial” following the fall of the Socialist bloc, when an economic crisis almost drove the country BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

to its knees, famine ruled and gas was unaffordable. Against all odds, “Harlistas” defended their ancient machines which served them so well. In time, the American bikes regained their public reputation as means of transportation as well as a status symbol. The owner exudes not only self confidence but also exclusivity, a fact not to be underestimated in the macho country that is Cuba.

They tell readers about their bikes, but most of all about their country These 50 portraits taken by Italian photographer Max Cucchi, were produced over a ten-year span and illustrate these beautiful motorcycles in archetypical Cuban settings. However, what these images also reveal are the owners in their private

environment: In the living room, on the field, in the center of Havana, and of course, in their garages. They tell us about their machines, but most of all about their country - about the problems, the difficulties which they have to face every day. You will get to know a lot about Cuba and about the people who live there, about their perseverance, their slyness, their passion and their tenacity. Those who still want to get to know the “old” Cuba have come to the right place. Cuban Harleys, Mi Amor, is an entertaining history lesson. With this book and its beautiful images, readers are transported via the American Harley Davidson iron hogs, which page by page show the Cuban reality, (English, Spanish and German) which above all tell us one thing: What Cuba is really like.

Contact: cuba@backroad-diaries.de, Publisher direct: (+49) 151 – 19660291 The Authors Photographer Max Cucchi Massimiliano Cucchi is an Italian photographer who has lived in Cuba since the late 90s. Even as a little boy he was a big fan of motorcycles and used to own different models, from the famous VespaScooter to a Cagiva Enduro. Born in Brescia in Northern Italy, Max is the author and publisher of the “Max” tourist guide and of the magazine “CubaSi”. As a journalist and photographer, he has worked for the Cuban tourism industry, which enabled him to explore the country thoroughly. He took pictures reflecting all aspects of life across the island; many of these images are available for future projects. As a fresh arrival to Cuba, he got hooked on motorcycle culture, especially the culture of Harley-Davidson. It was this interest that gave him the idea to tell the story of Cuban Harlistas. Currently, Max owns a Harley-Davidson, works as a photo journalist and keeps his passion for BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

everything Harley-Davidson. Author Conner Gorry Author and journalist Conner Gorry received her BA in Latin American Studies from New York University and a Master’s degree in political sciences from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She is author of several books, including Havana Street Style (2014; Intellect Books), A Contemporary Cuba Reader (2015; Rowman & Littlefield) and Places of a Lifetime (2015; National Geographic). Since 2002, she has lived and worked in Havana, from where she writes her blog www. hereishavana.com and reports on the Cuban health system for MEDICC Review. In 2013 she opened Cuba Libro, in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood, the only English-language bookstore and cafe on the island. Author and publisher Jens Fuge Fuge founded and heads the publishing house ”Backroad Diaries“. Before that, he worked as a journalist for the Leipziger Tageblatt, BILD Stuttgart, Leipziger Volkszeitung. He has published ten books on a variety of themes including the Leipzig Soccer Scene and the Leipzig Olympic application for 2012 as well as about the motorcycle and club scene. He is a freelancer for outlets such as Süddeutsche Zeitung, FAZ, BikersNews, Motorcycle Globetrotter – his travels, always on a Harley, led him to Russia, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, USA, Canada, to the North Cape and to the Isle of Man. His comprehensive experiences in the heart of

the Rocker-and Biker Scene can be bought as a book series “Back Diaries” providing a backstage view and which is not part of the endless series of at least questionable exposés and didactic books. After “Hell Ride through Arizona”, a journey to the roots of the American MC-Scene and the founders of the Hells Angels he wrote “Harlistas in the Caribbean”, which tells about his adventurous Harley tour across Cuba. “When I first saw Max Cucchi’s pictures I was immediately fascinated. I travelled to Cuba in order to investigate missing text and took a deep dive into the original and authentic Cuba,” Jens Fuge says. Whether it was farmer Hector in Santa Clara, street vendor “Fritura” in Santiago de Cuba or rock star David Blanco – they all told the most unbelievable stories about their beloved bikes. Fuge was able to take a look at the ancient machines, each of them at least 60 years old, at many diverse locations: In the living room, on the fields, in the garage. Locations for dreams and yearnings. And infatuation: “What unbelievable garages they have over there in Cuba! They are stuffed to the last corner with thousands of seemingly useless parts of indiscernible character. They are stacked, hang from the wall, or just lie in the way. And on the unplastered walls held by some rusty nails, the tools: wrenches, socket attachments, steer chain spanners, self made special tools. Archaic, chaotic specialized in attrition - like the country itself.”

Cuba: Exotic. In Transition. Thrilling but most of all: surprising-every time.

Polk County Back Roads to Roscoe’s & More

Here is a nice self-guided back road ride through Polk County, starting in Fort Meade and stopping at Roscoe’s Ole Time Drag Races and Swap Meet, then heading over to Fun Bike Center Motorsports and MoJo’s restaurant in Lakeland. Heading out of Fort Meade, you will take what are known as the mining roads up to Bartow. Agricola Road and Noralyn Mine Road are old Florida mining roads that are still used by the phosphate mining companies today. These roads have nice sweepers and are seldom visited by cars. I am always trying to let you know of roads less traveled and with little traffic. You can find many rides like this in my Finz Finds Master Guide Book of Florida. Traveling a little farther north, you will end up at a place that is known for its old school Florida biker traditions. Throughout the year, Roscoe’s puts on several biker events. Roscoe’s Chili Challenge is in November, and now Roscoe’s Ole Time Drag Races and Swap Meet (Aug 13-14). Roscoe’s has a very loyal following of bikers. Come out to the Ole Time Drag Races and Swap Meet for an old school biker good time. To continue the fun, head on over to Bike Fun Center Motorsports and MoJo’s restaurant. Fun Bike Center is a full service motorcycle, ATV, scooter, and personal watercraft super center. If you’re looking for a good deal, this is the place. Mojo’s has an indoor and outdoor bar, a stage for live entertainment, and even an outdoor patio. Mojo’s has the best daily happy hour in Lakeland and great daily specials for both lunch and dinner. I am always trying to find you great destinations, and a better way of getting there. I love old Florida roads and connecting them into great rides. For more old Florida back road rides, go to www. finzfinds.com, and ride the roads most cars don’t know about. Until next time, make sure you stay in the wind. For over 20 years Dave Dorsch has made thousands of people

“HAVE SOME FUN”

Fun Bike Center is one of the largest motorcycle dealers in Central Florida. Boasting a 60,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art building, packed full of every power sport toy you can imagine, it’s a joy to walk in and experience customer service at its best! I had the honor of spending time with Dave Dorsch getting to know what everyone at the Fun Bike Center in Lakeland has been up to AND the special event they had with one of our precious Born To Ride Family Members! “Little Ronnie Galletti came in to our store and we presented him with a new dirt bike. We got him all the gear and outfits, had him sit on his new bike and took lots of pictures! He was super excited about this as were all of us at Fun Bike Center!”

Fun Bike Center creates legacies that continue year after year. “It’s really a family event where the whole family rides. It starts with the kids riding the small bikes and they build up to larger ones. But they start out riding and they do it as a family. The whole family is involved! In the last 22 years that I’ve been doing this, we’ve seen the parents bringing their kids in. Now, we’re seeing those kids bringing in THEIR children! It’s just moving on in the generations.” Being there for 20+ years and continuing on this tradition, has been something Dave and his Team love to talk about. “It just proves that it’s a really great bonding time for the families doing the motorcycle riding together. To see their passion passed onto their kids and their kids and having it as a

past time is great!” Fun Bike Center started in the 1990s. “My brother, Dan Dorsch, and I, as kids, used to race dirt bikes. When we’d go to the local motorcycle shop, we used to say, ‘It would be so great and so cool to have our own shop someday.’ We grew up and went into different businesses. My brother had over 100 Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell restaurants and he had sold them. I was visiting him in Tampa (I’m from California) one day and I said to him, ‘What are you going to do now? Sit on the beach sipping drinks?’ And Dan said, ‘Oh no, you know me! I’m a business man! I have to keep moving. I want to go into the motorcycle business!’ “We went over to a local motorcycle

Dave Dorsch

dealer in Tampa and asked if they wanted to sell out. They didn’t but led us to a business owner in Lakeland that was ready to sell. My brother knew exactly where it was because he owned a Taco Bell right across the street from it!” “So we drove out there and talked with the owner. He did want to sell. My brother purchased the dealership and I was ready to get out of my commercial business that I had been doing for 20+ years in California. Dan said to me, ‘Hey! I want you to run this business for me. We will be able to fulfill our dream of owning a motorcycle dealership.’ So I sold my business, moved to Florida 22 years ago and we started at the little, tiny 2,500 sq. ft. and built it up to the massive business it is today!” Born To Ride was a young media outlet back in the day. Fortunately, a long-term friendship commenced with Dan Dorsch. “When Ron was doing his television show, we would watch it. We bought advertising on Born To Ride TV. Ron and my brother became friends right away. Ron thought of my brother as a mentor. They stared talking quite a bit about business, in general, and growing it in the right directions. When Ron decided to do the magazine, they worked BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

together and Fun Bike Center was on the cover of the first Born To Ride magazine! They talked quite a bit about how to grow the magazine and became great allies. We’ve continued working with Ron, watching him and his business grow, right along with us!” Fun Bike Center has more than just motorcycles! “We offer Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Triumph. We have a large selection of used bikes including Harley, Suzuki, Yamaha and more! We have riding apparel for men, women, and children – and the largest helmet selection in Florida. We also carry hundreds of accessories, and we have a service center with techs who have over 30 years of experience – factory certified too! We cover everything; the motorcycle, the gear, the service – including before, during and after the sale.” In addition, Fun Bike Center has motorcycle safety courses at their Lakeland location! “We work with Joe’s Motorcycle Training School. They come out three days a week at our dealership. We’re all about training and safety so it’s an enjoyable experience for our customers.” There are many riding clubs and associations that are a part of the Fun

Bike Center! “We have the Vulcan Riders Association, and we have the FROGS: Florida Rider Owners Group. We have a very nice conference room that the Florida Trail Riders use and the AMA comes in as well. Some of the suppliers have their corporate meetings here, too.” What’s coming up soon? “We are doing a Ladies Night in September. We also have MoJo’s restaurant here in our plaza; they have the coldest beer in town! We do a Wednesday night bike night here in our complex every week as well.” Ending our great conversation, Dave added that in addition to the motorcycles (street, dirt, and trail), Fun Bike Center also carries personal watercraft, ATVs, and side by side. The store is right across from Lake Parker in Lakeland! One last important fact is the Fun Bike Center wins all the top awards in the industry: Kawasaki Ichiban Gold, Honda Council of Excellence, and Yamaha White Diamond Award. In addition, Fun Bike Center is proud to be an annual recipient of numerous industry awards including the prestigious Dealernews Top 100, which is reserved for the 100 best dealerships in North America! A true industry leader!

Kruisin Around Lake Okeechobee

Here we are on our way into August or maybe already in August by the time some of you read this article. Personally, I’m waiting on October to get here like so many other riders. I haven’t been doing a whole lot of riding since my last accident so that means long trips have been few and far between. Well good news is, my husband and I have a trip scheduled for October. Yes on the bikes, no trailers, rain gear will be packed and fingers will be crossed for a safe trip. I am so excited about the ride its long over due. Now it’s not like I haven’t been on the bike at all; I do hop on for a shorty when ever I get the chance. Like the other day hubby said he’d watch the dog and the house for me to go shopping or do something. I threw on some riding clothes, boots and my helmet then planted my rear in the saddle of my trike with the thought where do I go? I thought this was pretty funny that I took off without a clue of where I was going and had until the 4-way stop to figure it out. Ok let’s go cruise around Lake Okeechobee, it’s been a while since I’d done that. So onto Hwy 80 heading east it was. One of the advantages of living here in LaBelle is that if we head east we stay out of traffic for a long time where if we ride west we are heading right into all the traffic. The ride around the lake is usually a very mellow run without a lot of traffic and on this particular day it was just that. I was able to do a little sight seeing from the saddle and even pull off the road when I wanted to take a photo. One of the first photos was of this pink bird with a spoon shaped bill. There were two of them but the sound of my hog kinda scared them away

in front of it was for a game of where am I. Then the next thing ya know I see on Facebook that the building burned and fell to the ground. Its no longer there as an ikon or historic building on the corner at the end of Pahokee. I’m sure most of you who have been around the lake remember seeing the building right? Because of my lollygagging around with taking photos I was beginning to run out of free time – I felt like I should get headed home. I went on past a couple of my old favorite stops knowing that I had to make at least one more visit with friends … Iron Eagle and Betty Boop folks! I can’t go past there without stopping in to say hi and grab a cold one, a cold soda that is. I don’t drink alcohol and ride, never have and never will, but that doesn’t keep me from visiting my friends there at the bar. Ok onward to home and downloading the photos. I have to say that riding around the lake has to be one of my most enjoyable rides for this part of the state – it’s as relaxing as it’s allowed to be.

It’s also been a long time since I made any recommendations on places to eat while you’re out and about but I’ve got one for ya now. Dick’s Restaurant and bar in Alva has very very good food all the time, but the real deal is the brunch buffet on Sunday’s. For ten bucks they have an all you can eat buffet with a variety of some of the best home cooked dishes. Pulled pork and fish are two of the items that are always there and I’d be sad if they weren’t. We’re going to be doing a bike day there on the last Saturday of the month also, so please if you’re in the area stop in! Don’t forget about the Mugs & Jugs Bike day in Lehigh on the 4th Sunday monthly also. See ya there! For now keep it between the ditches and see ya on the road! By the way for all those Bella fans out there, I need to let you know she has crossed that rainbow bridge in the sky. Not going to get

into details but she didn’t suffer long and she did die in my arms where she knew the most love. Thank you to all who ask me about her whenever you seen me … she certainly was loved by many. We recued a new fur baby, believe it or not her real name was Bella too. This fur baby will never take Bella’s place, but I have to admit it does ease the pain of the loss a little bit. Anyway, before I could get the perfect shot. That was just thought I’d let ya know. between Pahokee and Belle Glade. Here’s one for ya, the building with my bike setting Hugs and talk to ya later, Katie if you’re wanting to be noticed, get advertising with us, here’s my email Kruisinwithkati@aol.com BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 53

It sort of puts you into the mind-set of the particular model owner and further allows you experience those motorcycles that you have never owned or ridden. This has to be the greatest job that a biker could have and other than playing music and hosting bike nights & radio shows, there is nothing else I would rather do! There are some other lucky people out there also. They are those pesky motorcycle cops that seem to come out of nowhere and have the ability to chase down your Corvette if they so desire! You gotta give these guys a ton of respect because they not only work hard protecting the population in their respective service areas, but they actually get issued a company motorcycle and safety equipment plus they get PAID to ride! I could never be a cop. Welcome to summer! It’s hot as hell here in the trailer park I have been labeled as the ‘other’ side of the law all my life and the temperature continues to rise. Biker Movie Review

Confusion and chaos pretty much sums up this movie. It is the modern day version of all the biker exploitation “B” movies ever made. Curiously, Larry Bishop (as Pistolero) appeared in a variety of films including The Savage Seven, Mad Dog Time and Kill Bill to name a few. His collaboration with Quentin Tarantino in this most recent effort, would lead one to believe that “Hell Ride” is a major cinematic production destined for the A list. Sadly, it falls short of that mark. The story revolves around Pistolero and his gang “the Victors.” The main characters are himself, the Gent and Comanche who set out to avenge the death of his ol lady Cherokee Kisum. Cherokee, it seems, was murdered by the 666er’s, a rival gang. But wait, let’s back up! This is exactly what makes the flick so confusing. … We flash back and forth from 35 years back to 35 years forward. It seems that Bishop as the writer, director, and star is the only one who understands what is going on at any given time. I was lost after viewing it twice, but again I digress. The film is soaked with girls, drugs, and murder. I like all those facets in a biker exploitation film, but the chaotic pace leaves one wondering where the plot is. It seems the Victors MC have an underlying code of deceit and distrust. As the movie rolls along, several of the members of gang are killed by the Gent and other Victors—leaving only Pistolero, the Gent, and Comanche in the gang. Ahhh, but there BTR 76 | BORNTORIDE.COM

is another member hiding in the desert! Eddie Zero, played by Dennis Hopper appears as a (possibly retired) member of the gang. How they were able to get Hopper to appear in this mess was a mystery in itself, and I was surprised, and entertained for a moment until I saw David Carradine playing rival gang member “The Duce.” Evidently, the Duce and Pistolero had some under-the-table dealings and this conflict led to the ongoing battle between the two clubs. The 666er’s use arrows and darts to carry out their hits while the Victors use the more conventional revolvers, available at Wal-Mart. The Victors trademark murders–you will see a few of these involve the tying of one to a chair, the cutting of the throat, and the soaking of the subject in gasoline, which is then ignited by the tossing of a Zippo lighter, also available at Wal-Mart. Somewhere in my recall, it seems to me that this ritual was borrowed from the 666er’s when they did in Cherokee Kisum. In the end, the Victors cut off the Duce’s head, and Eddie Zero delivers it to the 666er’s hangout in a nice wicker basket (see WalMart above). He departs and rides off down the road until his motor quits for some reason. He gets off his vintage ride to repair it, and sees the 666er’s pull up behind him. The leader of the 666er’s, (played by Vinnie Jones) shoots him in the back with a dart fired from an air powered device that looks like a Shark Gun. He collapses on the highway. Much to the 666er’s surprise the Victors pull up behind them and the Gent kills all of them, but only wounds Jones who falls to the pavement. Pistolero in a strange twist of role, shoots Jones with a small crossbow, then reloads and fires a dart into Jones’ gas tank. As the fuel surrounds Jones, who is bleeding cussing and etc, one of the Victors cuts his throat, and Pistolero tosses the classic Zippo into the pool of gas. In the next frame, Hopper gets up off the pavement, and removes his armor-laden jacket – arrow still intact- and hands it to his girl who gives him a similar jacket. They depart the scene, and the three meet in the desert where the 666er’s had previously buried some sort of lockbox containing some sort of (something).… There are three keys that have 666 stamped into them. There is a short argument, and Comanche digs up the lock box and the others give him the three keys. What’s in that thing you ask? You will never know, because the shot shows only Comanche’s face from the inside as he opens the box. I think it was empty, but what do I know? The trio then fire up their motors and ride off in three different directions as the credits roll. If you are a fan of naked ladies, cool classic motorcycles, and blood and guts, this film is for you! However, if you were expecting a plot, a story line, or a coherent slide show of pleasant desert scenes you aren’t gonna be too happy. Tarantino once told Bishop “It is your destiny to write, direct, and star in a movie.” Sometimes destiny is not all it’s cracked up to be! I would reluctantly give this film 2 out of 5 stars, because there were two REAL stars exploited in this mess. It is rated R for ridiculous, and runs approximately 86 minutes. In my opinion it should be 86’ed altogether.

Spyke & Mike OMG my BTR friends, Ellen is such a wonderful host! Ever since Dave dropped me off here she has been just like Mike, giving me lots of nuts, juice, and love. She told me that someone is coming to get me soon. After a wonderful lunch and tour around the facility, Ellen leaves me on a perch in the front office. She tells me that I’m a great bird and need to be back with my daddy so the two of us can continue to make people smile, appreciate life, and enforce why we’re here on this Earth: to pass on random acts of kindness and make beautiful moments happen. Ellen and the Seminole County Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary are the best! I doze off and start dreaming. … Suddenly I’m awakened by a familiar voice. It’s Tammy and she’s calling my name. I look at her and a chill runs down my feathers cuz I know her! Tammy and I go way back. She’s got my boyfriend, Blu, and has introduced me to many great lifelong friends. Looking at her reminds me of the episodes when I rode with Alan from England. Boy was he a hoot. Then more visuals come into my head about riding with her husband Jimmy, the man. That dude is crazy but harmless and a whole lot of fun. Mike and I have had some great times together with them and it makes me happy to have been part of it all. It just goes to prove that life is good when you’re surrounded by great people. She comes over and I immediately go to her. She knows just how to scratch my head and behind my wings, which I have missed so much. Those two exchange bird talk, gratitude, and information. I give Ellen a kiss goodbye and we head out the door. Jimmy is in the passenger seat with treats in hand. Life is getting better by the minute. He gives me a Frito then starts in on me. “Spyke! You have to stop trusting everyone and thinking Mike is always going to be around for your protection. You have to act more like Blu, an aggressive/defensive bird. Our world has changed from years ago. There are a lot of people out there that really suck!” I squawk, “OK buddy, I learned a valuable lesson and I hope Mike has too.” He gives me another Frito and tells me, “yeah, I’m gonna have words with him next!” Tammy drives us back to Daytona. We arrive at a strange house. Little to my knowledge there is a surprise party waiting for my arrival and I’m the guest of honor. It’s Donna and Dave’s place. She and her husband are bird owners and

THE REUNION

have taken Mike under their wings all week. They have been beating the streets of Daytona following up leads along with various other friends, John, Joan, Kat and Joanna, a Rocktender who helped so much on the internet side. The moment that Jimmy brings me into the house there was a sensation of Revelation, a Time and Space Moratorium, a Parting of the Seas, and an Alignment of the Planets. I see Mike and he has tears of joy rolling down his cheeks. Jimmy hands me to him and I lick one of them. We went for Bike Week and he had to stay for Spyke Week. It’s been 6 days, 14 hours, and 10 minutes of sheer hell for both of us. Now the celebration begins. After meeting my new friends, Mike gives me one of my favorite dinners, a burger and fries from Krystal. As I’m chowing down, Mike tells me about all the people that have stopped their lives and either joined in the search or done what they could on social media to help me get back to where I’m at today. “It started with bikers from California who tried to foil the abduction. The bartender who posted one tiny little clip about the birdnapping. The homeless street people, who did all they could to try and locate those two low-life losers. The many locals who gave me leads and helped chase them down. The wonderful folks at the three TV stations in Daytona and Orlando and the two newspapers that ran the stories about us for days. John and Karen Provost who have been lifelong friends of ours and put up with my lost ass for a week. All of our cronies back on the west coast of Florida including Ron, Debbie, Jesse, and the crew at BTR who did so much posting, passing info, and praying. It just goes to show that the power of people and believing in miracles does work.” Mike and I will be thanking all of you personally for months and probably years to come. We will never forget you! If and when you do see us out and about, please let us know what little part you did to make Mike’s horrible Spyke Week turn into a happy ending. And I will give you that Kodak moment to remember us by. Now when we go out, he ALWAYS has one eye on me or another friend has got his back, and my feathers. Life is slowly getting back to normal, as normal as life can be. Mike is doing what he does best: putting his knees in the breeze, my wings in the wind, and the Fat Birds’ wheels rolling down the road. SPYKE

On the Movie Set, “The Rack Pack”

Christian Motorcyclists Association One of the lessons I had to learn when I started riding again was that your bike goes where your eyes go. Being of a doubtful mindset when I first heard this advice, I tried it out by looking at the reflectors in the road as I changed lanes. Sure enough, when I set my eyes on the reflectors I was rewarded by the bumps in the road as my tires hit the markers. One day I was riding a great little road with a lot of curves and twists and felt my bike straining to reach the edge of the road. Fortunately I realized that I was spending too much time looking at the scenery just past the road’s edge. When I refocused my eyes to look down the road ahead of me, the bike quit fighting me in the curves, and easily went where I wanted it to go. One time I was practicing riding in circles in a parking lot, and accidentally took my eyes off of my target and instead looked down at the ground next to the bike. Well, you know what happened! Before I even realized it, I found myself on the ground with a 900-pound bike pinning my foot to the asphalt. Fortunately the only thing that got hurt that day was my pride. BTR 80 | BORNTORIDE.COM

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Just like riding a bike through a curve, or even rolling over reflectors in the roadway, Peter discovered that wherever he looked, that’s where he went. Peter took his eyes off of the power and promise that Jesus offered, and looked at the raging winds and water, and he began to sink. Even though Peter knew in his heart that Jesus was the answer to his dilemma, he still took his eyes off of his hope and looked at his hopelessness. When things go wrong in our lives, and all we can see is the storm, rather than the Savior, we need to reorient our vision to see Jesus. He’s always there, listening to hear us cry out to Him for help, always ready and willing to forgive us of for our failure to obey Him. Peter had it right on target when he called out, “Lord, save me!” Have you asked Jesus to be your Lord? Have you asked Him to be your safe haven in the storms of life? Have you intentionally focused your eyes upon His love, His grace, and His forgiveness? If you are willing to confess your sin, and allow Jesus to be the Lord, and Savior, of your life, He will become your anchor in the raging storms of life. Keep your eyes on Jesus, He’s the answer to every problem you’ll ever face!
