RIDING POSTURE

Maintaining good posture in the saddle is an important component of good riding. Not only will paying attention to your posture help you stay comfortable over long distances, it will also enhance your control of the motorcycle by helping your body stay relaxed. Sit on the motorcycle in an upright position with your back straight, your head up, and your eyes focused on the roadway ahead. Ride with your knees and elbows turned inward. They should be comfortably bent (not locked) so you can quickly move or respond to changes in riding conditions.

Keep both feet on the footrests at all times so you can quickly position them to operate the rear brake pedal or shift lever. Grip both handgrips firmly with your wrists turned downward and knuckles pointed up. Make a conscious effort to keep your body limber and relaxed. Tensed muscles will cause you to fatigue quickly, and will lessen your ability to respond promptly to any obstacles that might appear in your path. A relaxed rider is a ready rider. The better your skills are, the more relaxed you’ll be. A wrist-down position on the throttle hand is

recommended. It will help avoid overrevving the engine and will make it easier to reach for the front brake lever when it comes time to slow down. In a standard turn, lean with the motorcycle for smoothness and stability. In a slow, tight turn, such as turning around in a parking lot, it helps to counterweight by leaning in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and direction of the turn. Put pressure on the outside footrest.

Bob Kay: A Look Back at Last Year “Why you can’t miss the AIMExpo”

For the past three years the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando hosts the American International Motorcycle Expo, or AIMExpo for short. This year, the event held its first ever garage party show featuring custom bike competition, live music, displays of V-twin motorcycles past and present, along with the most radical designs you’ve ever seen outside of Mad Max. The AIMExpo also features world-class exhibitors and representatives of all the major motorcycle manufacturers and custom bike BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

builders such as S & S Cycles, Johnny Pag Motor Company, Standard Motor Company and dozens more! We interviewed Bob Kay, the AIMExpo V-Twin director and we also checked out the unbelievable stunning futuristic motorcycle designs from custom motorcycle innovators RK Concepts. Debbie Galletti: Bob, I’ve been telling everyone about you all day and now finally I’ve caught up with you! I know you’re busy. For three years now, AIMExpo has

been coming here to the Orange County Convention Center, but this is your first year! What inspired you to join this group? Bob Kay: Mike Webster and Larry Little had the vision of AIMExpo in the first place. The timing with this this time of year combined with the outdoors of the trade and consumer event. However, Mike and Larry knew they weren’t familiar with the intricacies of the V-Twin market; I’ve only been doing that for the last four decades! So they invited me to come and visit with them at the offices.

Great team, great group of people! I was really excited to join. So, last year I spent checking it out. This year, we have the ‘Made in America’ section, the ‘Championship of the Americas’ where we are going to send somebody to compete in Germany at the world championship, and a garage party for all of the consumers coming in on Saturday and Sunday. So, really, motorcycles are my passion! To be involved with this team and this group; we’re now a part of the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC)! Who could ask for anything better! It’s the dream job and it’s

unbelievable! Debbie: And you put that correctly. You’ve been in this industry and business for decades. What does AIM bring to the table year after year that’s just so inviting and exciting? Bob: Well, I think it’s the platform that is really receptive. They listen to the exhibitors, and they listen to the dealers. And now being a part of the MIC and their drive that they have opened up a dealership membership level, the major OEMs – they are willing to change and listen and do what’s best for the industry. And probably one of the

Championship of the Americas Info, Call Bob Kay 817-312-0380

coolest things about being a part of the MIC is that they are non-for-profit, they’ve been around over 100 years fighting for our rights to ride our motorcycles and do what we want. Now everything that we do at AIMExpo, in terms of initiatives and profit, goes right back to the motorcycle industries. So, how can it be better than that? Debbie: The exhibitors out there right now are phenomenal! Their displays are great! School us a bit on the OEM. Bob: OEM is your Original Equipment Manufacturer. For example, Harley, Yamaha,

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 13

Polaris, Honda, etc. They operate at a very high level. And what’s unique about the timing of this show is that most of their new product debuts are in the fall because they are getting ready for the season; they want a little input and feedback. So with this timing, we’re able to debut many new models. But not only new models on that level, but they can also come back to the small parts manufacturers and the

motorcycle manufacturers), and compete for the world championship. 2012 was the last year we had the world championship in Sturgis and we qualified two Americans then to go over. 2013 was the Harley Museum show for the 110th anniversary. HarleyDavidson kindly supported that so that gave us three members. You don’t build a world championship competition bike in

limits. They all made it here on time. Our capacity is for 50 bikes and we have 50 bikes! Just to let you know they types of builders we have here; we had to wait until the carpet was put down and the risers were set up. It took a lot of effort to put them up there. It wasn’t an easy task! They all stayed all night to help me get them up. We had a little pizza and beer and knocked it out.

after-market companies for items like exhaust and wheels. It’s a chance for all the media to be here. Thursday and Friday were just trade days. The stage we’re on is the center of the media hub, and the product presentations and the new model debuts all day long! It’s a great opportunity to get so much done in a short amount of time. Debbie: This has a lot of international flare. Companies are here from everywhere! Bob: Oh, absolutely! I’ve been involved with the American Motorcycle Dealer (AMD) and the world championship. One of my side projects and dream is to have Team American to go over to Cologne, Germany, and INTERMOT (biennial trade show for

six or eight weeks; it takes time. So we allow these guys to take the time to put these bikes together. None of those competitors have made it over to Germany so they are ready to go. This year the winner of the Freestyle AIMExpo Championship of the Americas will qualify. So next September, INTERMOT AMD Championship of the Americas will have four American builders going to compete and show the world what they can do. The builders have really come through for me. I know a lot of the builders. But they had to make an extreme effort. They drove through the night to be here. We don’t have that luxury of coming in late at this show; you can tell with this type of show we have time

I couldn’t be happier from the support and response I’ve gotten from these builders. It’s incredible! Debbie: Bob, why would someone want to be involved in this expo? What would you want to tell them on how to get involved? Bob: Well, part of my charge is to increase the attendance. But that’s just a twofold job; Thursday and Friday during the trade days, we need all the dealers here. In order for the industry to grow in the proper direction, we need that input from the dealers. It’s these opportunities for the dealers to get educated and tracked by the power sports institute, for us to get the feedback of what they want. And again,

BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

that’s why AIMExpo has been so successful in three short years because we are very receptive. And with more dealers coming, the better exhibitors feel, the more the exhibitors we will have! It’s that catch 22; it keeps rolling along. And of course, it’s really that same extension when it comes to the consumer days because the high end and manufacturer guys don’t always get that chance to meet directly with the consumers. So you’ll find, when you come and attend, that it’s a lot of fun and a great show. You are there to express what you like and what you don’t like, your riding style, where you would like to see the industry grow. As a part of the AIMExpo and the MIC it’s about the future of motorcycling. If you’re here at AIMExpo, either the dealer level or the consumer level, you can help that grown in the direction it needs to go. What’s New: In recognition of the continued rise in popularity and influence of the custom bikebuilding culture of motorcycling, AIMExpo will unveil a brand new showcase for 2016 known as “Custom Culture at AIMExpo.” Key components are the Championship of the Americas bike builder competition, the Standard Motorcycle Co. Showcase, millennial artisans, bike builders, and

more. There will also be a chance to meet Custom Culture ambassador Leticia Cline. Highlights: At AIMExpo Outdoors, attendees have a one-of-a kind opportunity to test ride new 2017 motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and UTVs from several participating manufacturers in both street and dirt environments! The AIMExpo Championship of the Americas returns as a world-class custom bike competition between builders from all corners of the Americas that will serve as a path to compete in the 2018 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building. The Made in America @ AIMExpo pavilion will spotlight American companies designing, assembling, or producing the best powersports brands and products in the country. Made in America will showcase the ingenuity of American companies and their broad influence on the domestic and international powersports marketplace, and provide a natural home for producers of American V-Twin products. We all enjoy taking a ride through unchartered countryside on a motorcycle road trip, but nobody goes for a ride quite like Swiss Endurance rider Urs “Grisu Grizzly” Pedraita. Grisu Grizzly is the first person who successfully crossed all countries along their longest axis - no other vehicle has ever reached this achievement – in an unbreakable time, only 72 days and 13 hours. Joined by hundreds of Victory owners, Grizzly set off on his adventure from Daytona International Speedway on March 11, 2016 after a lap around the Daytona 200 road course. From Daytona Beach, he traveled 3,971 miles in only 6 days and 14 hours to the first checkpoint in Panama City, Panama. The next 9 days and 23 hours were spent riding his Victory to the tip of South America, Ushuaia, Argentina, then returning to Santiago, Chile, where he loaded his bike onto a plane and flew to Sydney, Australia. After riding 4,604 miles across Australia in six days and five hours, Grizzly and the “Daytona One” flew from Perth, Australia to Cape Town, South Africa. Grizzly then rode the 7,509-mile journey from Cape Town to Cairo, Egypt in 13 days BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

and 23 hours, ending this leg of the journey with a ferry across the Mediterranean to Tarragona, Spain. 5,447 miles and 6 days and 23 hours later, Grizzly found himself in North Cape, Norway. From there, he traveled east across Russia completing a

mammoth 7,280 miles in 11 days and 7 hours. Next, a quick 4-hour trip across South Korea, and a 5-day and 11-hour ride through Thailand and Malaysia. The last leg of his journey began in Anchorage, Alaska and took him zig-zagging across Canada and North America to a celebration in Williams, Arizona on Friday, July 8. Two days later, Victory owners and other motorcyclists gathered at Volusia Motorsports in New Smyrna Beach, Florida to celebrate the world record and greet

Grizzly as he finished his epic ride. In 72 days and 13 hours of riding, Grizzly covered 47,385 miles over 6 continents. (An average of roughly 650 miles a day). The Bike: A modified Victory Cross Country Tour with a 9-gallon tank, a custom seat, modified tail section, storage space in place of speakers, and a spoked front wheel for easier flat fixes. The “Daytona One” has numerous GoPro, camera, and GPS mounts along with many drink holders for the journey. Not only was the bike modified for the distance and comfort of Grizzly, but also for the safety. Check out World Record bike at Volusia Motorsports in New Smyrna Beach and meet Grizzly himself.

The Isle of Man TT is completed for 2016 and what a great two weeks it was! Michael Dunlop shattered his own outright lap record in Friday’s Pokerstars Senior TT, the final race of the 2016 Isle of Man TT Races fueled by Monster Energy, as the Hawk Racing BMW rider lapped at 133.962mph on his way to his 13th TT victory. In a repeat of Saturday’s RST Superbike race, Dunlop got the better of Ian Hutchinson and John McGuinness with his eventual winning margin a commanding 31.4s. With morning delays, the race finally got underway at 3.45pm and at Glen Helen on the first lap, Dunlop had already established

a healthy 1.8s lead over Hutchinson with Harrison a further 1.6s behind in third as Lee Johnston, Gary Johnson and Peter Hickman rounded out the top six, just six seconds covering the top ten. Dunlop was really pressing on but having doubled his lead by the time they jumped Ballaugh Bridge, Hutchinson had reduced it again at Ramsey to 2.9s while Johnson moved up to third ahead of Hickman, Bruce Anstey and Dean Harrison. With an opening lap speed of 133.256mph, Dunlop led Hutchinson by 2.8s with the leaderboard places behind the leading pair constantly changing. Hickman had moved

into third, eight seconds down on Hutchinson, with fourth to sixth now seeing Anstey, Johnson and Harrison occupying the places. Hutchinson grabbed the lead on the road on the second lap but he was unable to make any inroads into Dunlop’s time and all the way round the lap, the Ulsterman’s advantage grew. Indeed, with yet another new outright lap record of 133.962mph, Dunlop led his BMW rival by a commanding 9.2s as they made their first pit stop at the end of the lap. There was change further behind though as Anstey moved up to third, albeit almost 26 seconds behind Hutchinson, after Hickman retired at Brandywell. John McGuinness,

down in ninth at the end of the first lap, had jumped up the order to fourth with Harrison in fifth and Johnson now in sixth. The pit stops saw Dunlop and Hutchinson maintain their first and second place positions but McGuinness’ crew again worked wonders and that helped him take over third by the time he reached Glen Helen on lap three, with the Morecambe man now some 6.7s clear of Anstey. Johnson’s good run ended though with a retirement at Appledene while David Johnson slid off the Norton at Sulby Bridge after posting a 130mph lap on his opening lap. At half race distance, Dunlop had stretched out his lead slightly to 11.2s and now almost

BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM

had Hutchinson in his sights on the road. McGuinness had also pulled away from Anstey with the difference between the two Honda riders having gone out to 11.8s. Harrison was holding station in fifth with Conor Cummins moving up to sixth. Coming into the second pit stop and twothirds race distance at the end of lap four, Dunlop still didn’t have full control of the race as the gap was still only 10.6s. Hutchinson and McGuinness were circulating on the road together and looked secure in second and third with the lower leaderboard places also becoming more settled, Anstey, Harrison and Cummins still occupying fourth to sixth.

Dunlop’s team got him in and out quicker than Hutchinson and his lead grew by an additional five seconds. Indeed, he now had him firmly in his sights on the roads and was able to ride accordingly for the final lap and a half, eventually overhauling both Hutchinson and McGuinness on the road too. He eventually took the checkered flag from Hutchinson by over twenty seconds with McGuinness taking his 46th TT podium in third. Harrison grabbed hold of fourth on the penultimate lap from Anstey as Cummins, Rutter, Johnston, James Hillier and Ivan Lintin rounded out the top ten. The results saw Hutchinson end with

115 points to be a comfortable winner of the Joey Dunlop TT Championship with Harrison second on 80 and Dunlop third with 70. Meanwhile, Dan Hegarty was the first privateer to finish in an excellent 11th and that saw him clinch the TT Privateer’s Championship with 91 points to Jamie Coward’s 72. Ben and Tom Birchall took their fourth career TT win on Friday with victory in the second Sure Sidecar race at the 2016 Isle of Man TT Races, fueled by Monster Energy. The IEG Racing duo were locked in battle with Dave Molyneux/Daniel Sayle for the first lap but when they retired, they had a comfortable lead and eventually took the win

by 38.7s from John Holden/Andy Winkle with Tim Reeves/Patrick Farrance taking the final podium spot. Delayed by over three hours due to sea mist, the race finally got underway at 1.30pm and it was Molyneux/Sayle who led at Glen Helen on the first lap but only by a tenth of a second from Holden/Winkle with the Birchalls only a further second back. By Ramsey, the gap was half a second but it was now Holden who was leading with Birchall still only a second further adrift in third. However, it was all change again at the Grandstand as Molyneux retook the lead, his advantage over the Birchalls 0.9s as Holden

slipped back to third, now almost four seconds back in third. Reeves/Farrance slotted into fourth. Second time around at Glen Helen and there was another change at the top of the leaderboard as the Birchalls grabbed the lead for the first time. They were now half a second ahead of Molyneux/Sayle with Holden/Winkle still well in contention in third, just two seconds behind. However, as the lap unfolded, the Birchalls began to put the hammer down and by Ramsey Hairpin, they’d stretched the gap to 4.5s. And with a second lap speed of 116.615mph, their lead had grown further still, now standing at

6.2s as they started their third and final lap. Holden/Winkle were still in third but now 11.7s behind Molyneux and seemingly out of touch whilst Reeves/Farrance remained comfortable in fourth. Founds/Walmsley who were running in sixth place pulled in to retire just after passing the start and finish. There was more drama though at the head of the field as Molyneux/Sayle failed to make it Glen Helen on the final lap, retiring at Ballig Bridge. That made it a lot more comfortable for the Birchalls at the front and their advantage over Holden/Winkle now soared to 21.7s with Reeves/Farrance promoted up the order to

third. The Birchalls now had full control of the race with a 28s lead at Ramsey Hairpin and they were able to successfully bring the outfit up and down the Mountain to clinch their fourth win. Holden/Winkle were secure in second and with the runners-up spot, they took the overall Sidecar Championship with Reeves/Farrance salvaging their TT race week with another podium. Karl Bennett/Lee Cain were another crew to make amends for a first race retirement with the local crew taking fourth with Matt Dix/ Shaun Parker also having a career best finish in fifth. Steve and Matty Ramsden ended their successful fortnight with sixth as Alan Founds/

Aki Aalto, Gary Bryan/Jamie Winn, Tony Baker and Fiona Baker-Milligan and Gordon Shand/ Phil Hyde completed the top ten, BakerMilligan consolidating her tag as the fastestever female passenger with more 110mph+

A Harley-Davidson is more than a motorcycle. It is a symbol of Americana, built from the ground up by founders Walter and Arthur Davidson and their friend Bill Harley. But the road to success was not exactly smooth - it was filled with innumerable obstacles, ruthless competitors and extraordinary risks. Together these three young men, the sons of blue-collar immigrants, gave everything they had to ensure the survival of the company they founded. But just how far would they go to reach the ultimate American dream? Based on a true story, Harley and the Davidsons charts the birth of this iconic bike during a time of great social and technological

change beginning at the turn of the 20th century. Walter, Arthur and Bill risked their entire fortune and livelihood to launch the budding enterprise. Each of these men faced very different challenges, but it was the motorcycle that united their dreams and ambitions. Walter, Arthur, and Bill cemented Harley-Davidson’s reputation as a builder of bikes that go anywhere, can ride hard and ignore all the rules. It’s a legacy that has endured over 100 years - and at the heart of the brand and its loyal riders. Here is the link where fans can watch online: www.discoverygo.com/harley-and-the-davidsons

Georgia. The relationship between Gloria and Georgia is very powerful. Such a PATRIOTIC script. I usually predict what’s going to happen next but was blindsided every time . Beautifully crafted three dimensional characters. This is the ONE for you Thomas. Riveting, action-packed, heart-stopping sprinkled with a little something called magic. I would be honored to play Myra. Thank you for thinking of me. I will do the role justice, promise. Love how you empower women in this and burn a hole into the hearts and souls of bikers across America. It will mitigate and ameliorate the unfortunate stigma so many have been stamped with. My legendary best friend-- Larry Cohen could not have scribed a better thematic echo. I salute you.” Stay Tuned for some Big New on the cast and how you can be in Nation’s Fire.

Many of you who read Born To Ride magazine have seen our stories and various advertisements for Love Jugs. I was able to spend some time with Steve West, CEO of Love Jugs. Steve provided some new, exciting information about Love Jugs’ entry into the police world! “The police have more use for Love Jugs because they do so much slow riding. They also do a lot of idling when they have someone pulled over. Think how uncomfortable that bike is once they get back on the Motorcycle – it can be burning hot! By putting Love Jugs on their bikes, it solves all of those problems.” “Placement of Love Jugs is tremendous because so many times, for example, police officers are in a parade. With the slow riding, the bikes are burning the riders’ thighs and other body parts, and they can’t pull the bike off to the side to cool off. It’s just a matter of toughening it out. Having Love Jugs installed on the bikes eliminates that issue.” In ending our conversation, Steve mentioned, “Everyone needs Love Jugs. Police departments all over the world are discovering Love Jugs! Our biggest customer so far is the New York City Police Department. They told the Nassau County Police Department and now they are Love Jugs customers! Many other police departments around the world either have Love Jugs on their bikes and/or are testing them to place on all of the department bikes.” Recently, a Police Motor Unit blog stated, “Every police motorcycle in the world should be equipped with Love Jugs!” Are you going to Daytona Biketoberfest? If so, Love Jugs will be set up at J & P Cycles and at the Speedway in Daytona. Stop by, say hello, and let them know you read about them in Born To Ride magazine!

Craven Moorehead TECHNOLOGY UNCHAINED

“Times, they are a changing” I have heard a million times in my life. Spending a little time in front of the TV offers up a plethora of useless information that most people cannot correctly process. Especially me – because I suppose that as a simple redneck biker, I couldn’t fathom the concept of one particular invention that passed in a fleeting glimpse on the screen. That concept/invention is the “Driverless Car” which I found to be inconceivable, un-necessary and really weird. But the idea did spawn another devious thought or two. Let me preface this with the back story on the way my brain works. It’s like me – un-employed. … Anyhow, the last one of my broken wheels started spinning around in my head and I had a very strange idea. What if we invented a “Rider-less Motorcycle” that could carry a person to a pre-determined location and back for the enjoyment and satisfaction of the passenger only. Imagine this: You are just too lazy to go get the bike out to take the Ol lady down to the local tavern. Or perhaps you are too drunk or tired. But she incessantly insists that you take her for a ride. Here’s the answer. You drag your sorry ass up out of the recliner and go out to the garage, set the location (destination) into the GPS device on the motorcycle and fire the bike up. Put her in the passenger seat, and let the machine do the rest. Well, she wants to ride and you don’t so just go set the thing up and send her to the bar or wherever she wants to go. It’s a great idea especially because when YOU actually want to ride, all ya have to do is override the ‘automatic’ function and get on the bike and go with or

without her. I mean, it sounds like a good idea but I doubt that the technology will ever be created. Last month and the month before, I bored you all with my political rants. But let’s face it. The system under our current administration is irrevocably broken. Facing the upcoming election is frightening to most of us because we have to make a d e c i s i o n that will affect us, our kids and grandkids. This country is great and needs to be made even better. We don’t need a politician to try to take away our freedoms and rights, neither do we need more stupid legislation to confine us in the virtual prisons that we already live in. What we need is a vision for the future that will assure us enduring freedom and the promise of a bright future. It may be just a dream but. … You see, in today’s quagmire of governmental stupidity, a wise man will always issue a disclaimer (much in the same way this magazine issues disclaimers regarding my columns) to protect himself from liability from a bountiful Capricornia of zealots that have nothing better to do than litigate. I may feel empowered because I have the ability to expose my thoughts and feelings to my readers but my intent isn’t to offend, it is simply to inform. Information is pure power and many people perhaps disagree with my opinions regarding a very important issue, but again these are my thoughts and feelings and should not be taken as ‘advice’ on how to run your own life. After watching the first presidential candidate debate tonight, I have become concerned about a few things. One of these things is that Hillary didn’t discuss any issues regarding women. This is particularly curious because she is campaigning to be the first female president. I’m never sure which candidate is winning the vote but one thing is for sure, Hillary enjoys attacking Trump while he seems to understand the needs and wants of the working poor. I understand what it is like to be poor, and as you all know my situation is not getting any better. I want all of you to go out and vote for whichever candidate you think is the best qualified, and don’t let my views and opinions sway your vote. #MAGA It’s the best time of the year for a ride. I have to get up outta here and go see some old friends. Hope to see you out there on the highway. Remember to speed safely and keep your family and friends first!

Spyke & Mike

Hey there my BTR friends! The Peterson’s Poker Run was a great end to a strange summer for us. We did the unusual thing this year, we camped. There were a few times over the long weekend I heard Mike say, “I’ll never do this again.” But it wasn’t for the reasons you’d think. The first time he bellowed those hallowed words was shortly after the episode when we were cruising down Interstate 75 with the scoot packed to the gills, and the tent strapped to the front came loose. Actually, the bungee cord he precariously attached it with broke. At 80 MPH, something coming up and over the windshield has about a two-second delay before it’s bye-bye. … Luckily there was no one riding behind us. But that poor family in the minivan got a rude awakening when following too closely and trying to videotape my feathered ass riding a motorcycle. A cracked windshield and almost getting into an accident was the end result. After pulling over, exchanging insurance info, and apologies Mike and I continued on to Miami H-D; only stopping at Wally World to pick up bungee cords and another tent. The rest of the ride was event free and typical: tons of bikes at each poker run stop, several long traffic jams, and very hot temperatures. Mike had decided to stay at the Bahia Honda State Park on Big Pine Key. With oceanfront camping, warm showers, and a great sandy beach. This place is a camper’s dream! That is until the sun goes down, the bonfires start up, and the drinking begins. The night began with just the normal campfire rituals. People cooking, sitting around, and chatting. Then they would wander off between different ones. As the stars got brighter the moonshine started to flow like water. Mike and I were sitting at a roaring fire with a few fellows passing a jar when two dudes came staggering in. One of them was carrying three fishing poles. The other had three huge swordfish on a stringer. Both had half full quarts of moonshine in their other hand. Someone yells out, “Where’s Harry?” The dude carrying the poles says, “He’s back there a ways on the beach.

It Don’t get no Better than This

He fell over sayin’ he was having a stroke or somethin’.” The guy replies, “You left Harry there and brought back fish and poles?” His buddy carrying the fish drops them and says, “Yeah, it was a tough call, but we figured no one was going to steal Harry!” Mike picks me up and says, “Spyke, let’s make like horse crap and hit the trail before it gets too deep.” We wander over to another campfire and park it in some empty chairs. We’re only there a few minutes and a country bumpkin dressed in overalls and a wife beater t-shirt comes running up and says, “Hey Bubba, there wuz these two guys carin’ a feller and they tossed ‘em in the back of yer pickup truck and hauled ass.” Bubba jumps up and says, “Dammit Billy Bob! Did ya get a good look at ‘em?” He catches his breath and yells, “naw man, it was too dark, but I did write down the license plate number in the sand!” I squawk at Mike, “Now there’s proof that evolution can go in reverse! Let’s move on to the next campfire before the stupidity starts rubbing off. …” Mike and I wander over to the last campfire and have a seat across from the only couple sitting there. She has a long stick and was attentively poking the fire. He was fully engulfed in his laptop with a cold beer in one hand. It’s peaceful with only the snap of the flames and the roar of the surf around us. Mike leans over and whispers to me, “Spyke, now this is camp life: a nice burning fire, waves lapping at the beach behind us, and the twinkling of stars overhead. It don’t get much better than this!” A few minutes go by and the dude blurts out, “Hey honey, I was just thinking. I never want to live in a vegetative state, not talking to anyone, especially you. And I would not want to be totally dependent on some machine in front of me and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens just pull my plug. It will put you AND me out of my misery. Without missing a beat, she stands up and goes over to him. She then unplugs the laptop from the extension cord and throws it in the fire. Next she takes the beer from his hand and pours it over his head then yells out, “Your wish is my command!” Mike jumps up and shouts, “Hey Spyke, her sewing machine is out of thread! That’s our cue to make like some hay and bail. Let’s head back to the tent and call it a night. We’re camping with a bunch of people whose parents got into the gene pool while the lifeguard wasn’t watching. We just traveled three days and 200 miles to do something we could have stayed home and done. ... Why do we do these things?” I squawk at him, “Dude when we’re at home, alone, and you’re bored out of your gourd you say, Spyke let’s go out and do something ... so here we are! Life is not about how you survive in the storm, it’s about how you dance in the rain!” Mike babbles, “Yer right Spyke! And now we’re done doing a square dance around a small circle. I’ll never do this again. Tomorrow bright and early we’re going to get up and make like a green light and go! I’m getting your wings in the wind, my knees in the breeze, and the packed up Fat Bird’s wheels rolling north outta here!” SPYKE
