A Family Tradition Dedicated to Motorcycles
Phil was born on February 24, 1924 in that bastion of football, Green Bay, Wisconsin. His family were cherry farmers since the late 1800s on land awarded to his grandfather in recognition of his service in the Civil War under General Philip Sheridan. In tribute to General Sheridan, the grandfather named a son Philip Sheridan Peterson, Phil’s father. Phil is proud not only be named for his father, but also of the history associated with his name. During WW II, like may of his fellow countrymen, Phil answered the “call to arms” and joined the Navy. He served in the Pacific aboard the destroyer, USS Bearss, which was a member of the escort fleet for the signing of the treaty that ended the war. Phil is understandably proud of this time and remains close to several of his “comrades in arms” to this day. 21 and back from the war, Phil did what he long dreamed of.. he bought a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle! His first Harley® bike was a 1946 WL Harley 45cu (750) that he purchased for BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM
$425, money he saved up while in the Navy. Not long afterwards, he married Charlie and began farming. Together they have raised six children. Phil had this “passion” for motorcycles and in 1947 he started a motorcycle club. Charlie designed and stitched the club logo. They had meetings and went for rides, sort of an early HOG group. In 1950, at the age of 26, Phil (now with 2 children) could no longer contain his desire to race. Charlie, ever his biggest supporter, agreed that he could try his hand at racing for one year to see where it might lead. Well, that year he won the Minnesota Novice Championship! Phil continued to race, but still kept farming. Name the type of racing and Phil competed: Short Track, Road Race, Hill Climb, TT (Tourist Trophy), Ice Racing, Motorcross, and Drag Racing. He rode on the “Hot Shoe Circuit” for four years and continued racing locally until 1967. During this time he and Charlie became friends with Walter C. Davidson of Harley-
Davidson. In 1953, Walter approached Phil about becoming a Harley-Davidson dealer. At first Phil thought that Walter was joking, but he soon realized that he was serious. Even back then Phil loved Florida. He spent a lot of time racing in Florida and had built up a following. Florida? Why Florida? All Harley could offer, responded Walter, was a little, Navy town way, way south... Key West! The Navy, Harley, and Florida was more than he could resist. So he leased the farm and packed up Charlie and the family (now 4 children) down to Key West. His dealership soon became a hangout for the young men serving in the Navy. Phil, at the ripe “old” age of 30, had become sort of a “Father figure”. Racing was still in his blood and he was sponsored by fellow HarleyDavidson dealer, Billy Temple, up in Miami a relationship that would lead Phil to where he is today. Change was in the air, Charlie now expecting Drew, missed Wisconsin. So
Peterson’s Harley-Davidson, family owned and operated since 1954 - www.PetersonsHarley.com
Phil packed up family and returned to the farm. But...he had this agreement with Billy Temple...Phil could buy the Harley-Davidson of Miami dealership when Billy decided to retire. On July 4, 1965 - Billy Temple calls Phil - true to his word: “I’m retiring, are you sure you still want this place? After all, you have a wife and six kids?”... Say no more! Phil got a mortgage and it was back to Florida - Miami this time. Billy turns over the keys, leaves some petty cash in the register and Phil Peterson’s Harley-Davidson of Miami is born. Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run started some 43 years ago as just an idea to drum up some business during a normally slow time of year for his motorcycle business in Miami and Key West. Phil thought if he had a Poker Run to Key West In August and made an event of It, that would do the trick. Phil and a handful of local motorcycle riders, mostly from the Mustang Motorcycle Club decided to try it. The Run started early Saturday morning with sign up at the Miami Store, a ride to Key West hitting five restaurants or bars to draw a card and arriving In Key West in time to
get cleaned up for the Awards Dinner, Dance and Bike Show. The best hands would win prizes and as an added attraction they had a Best Dressed Contest (where riders and their passengers would wear matching boots, pants and shirts with their helmets painted to match their bikes) so not only was the bike judged but also the riders were judged for the best looking couple and they were awarded trophies. On Sunday morning they would have a Field Meet showing off their rider skills and scored for different events i.e. slow race, roll a barrel with your front tire,

ride over the teeter-totter plank etc. Competing for trophies) In those days there were small well organized riding clubs with a lot of camaraderie and friendly competition between clubs. Everyone would return home on Sunday afternoon and this went on for many years in the early days of the Poker Run. Today the Poker Run has grown into a major event with police estimates of ten to fifteen thousand riders. In the recent years it has managed to sell out all of the Key West Hotels with more and more riders staying on nearby Islands
and traveling into Key West for the day or party that they want to attend. Drew Peterson, Phil’s son, now manages and promotes the Poker run and believes another way that we can grow this event is to make it a Key’s Bike Week with a Key West Poker Run. So this year the plan is to have motorcycle rides, events and attractions throughout the Upper and Middle Keys to attract riders to come and stay for the Week and Island hop. There are thousands of hotel rooms and places to stay throughout the upper and middle keys.
“Motorcycle Riders are always Welcome to the Island” Craig Cates-Key West Mayor
The Idea is to ride down and ride all over the Keys for the first three or four days and enjoy many of the things you can do like, snorkeling or dive trips, fishing and fishing trips, kayaking. jet skiing, para-sailing and of course enjoying Paradise while eating, drinking and shopping. Then there is the Poker Run which will start on Thursday September 17th-Sunday 20th 2015. Then there’s the Poker Run Winner Takes All, a NEW Harley-Davidson 500 Street “or $6000 Cash.” Sign Up NOW online at www.PetersonsHarley.com or after Sept 1st at either Peterson’s Locatons. Note: This is Finz Finds Alternative Route to get to Key West Living in Key Largo for six years, I have learned all the great local places to eat, and all the little back roads off US-1. You can head straight down US-1 the whole way, and get to your destination just fine, but you will miss some of the side adventures the Keys have to offer. To start with, I highly recommend riding Card Sound Rd (and bridge) instead of taking what locals call the stretch (US-1). If you take the stretch, you will have cars constantly trying to pass you, and you will not get that laid back feeling heading down the road. When you take Card Sound, it is the road less traveled. You might even see some Florida crocodiles along the way. Yes crocodiles, not alligators. There are also a couple of local eateries at the foot of Card Sound bridge. Ala-

bama Jacks is one of them, and has been there forever. Key Largo is my favorite key, but I am partial to it because I lived there. It is the home of the Caribbean Club, a great biker hangout, and was featured in the movie Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart. The list of great Restaurants is too long to mention, but I recommend getting a bite at one of them like The Fish House (mm102), The Pilot House (mm 99.5), Mrs Macs Kitchen (mm 99.5) or Snappers (mm 94.5). If you want to swim with Dolphins, you can book a session at Dolphins Cove, Dolphins Plus, Theater Of The Sea, or Grassy Key Dolphin Research Center. When you get to Big Pine Key, take one of the side roads in my route, find a place to stop and turn off you engines. If you are lucky, you
might have Key Deer come up to you looking for a hand out. These deer are about the size of a small dog, and are used to people in this area. You wont find a ride that is as open air as the one down the Keys. The ocean on one side, and the bay on the other, along with all the long scenic bridges you will cross, makes riding the Keys one of my favorite. By the way, locals refer to points of interest either being located ocean side, or bayside, and everything is referenced by mile markers (mm), not addresses. Time is a little slower, and your life will be a little less stressful on this journey, so take it all in and enjoy the ride. Steve Finz

THE BASIC LEFT-TURNER
Approaching a busy four-way intersection there are a lot of elements to monitor: cross traffic may or may not stop for the light; pedestrians could step out at any time; an oncoming car waiting to turn left could fail to detect your presence and turn left in front of you. Sure enough, just as you approach the intersection, the car in the opposing left-turn lane swings into your path. You brake hard and swerve at the last second, barely avoiding a broadside collision. Strategy: Without a doubt, this scenario is a frequent hazard for motorcyclists riding in urban areas. A common type of motorcycle crash (for sober riders) occurs during daylight hours, at low speeds (around 30 mph), when an oncoming vehicle turns left into your path. Again, when approaching an intersection with a vehicle waiting in the left-turn lane, your best bet is to assume the worst: that a car will pull out in front of you. Reduce your speed as you approach the intersection, either downshifting or lightly applying the front brake. Adjust your position in the lane to be seen better. Slowing will increase your safety cushion: slowing just 10 mph reduces your stopping distance significantly, and covering your brake greatly reduces reaction time. After you’ve slowed, continue to visually monitor the car in case it moves and forces you to change position or stop quickly. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

Dear friends, September is such an exciting month. I truly encourage you to check out our events in the magazine and on the web, as there are so many charity rides, rallies, and activities to attend. My eldest baby, I still call her, is celebrating a tenth birthday. She is my true angel on earth, and I still can’t believe she is now a big “10” on the 7th. Happy Birthday Briannah! I am choosing to spotlight a great Georgia musician this month. I have massive respect for him, as do most in Georgia. I’m spotlighting Mr. JB Walker of JB Walker and The Cheap Whiskey Band. JB has been playing for 30 years. Alongside Mr. Rob Grater, Mr. Walker sits on his stool and helps us sway to the acoustic set of two very talented and true biker musicians on bike nights around the state. The full band is found playing at other spots and has played at the Iron Horse Saloon for a collective number of years (around 27 years, according to Mr. Walker). You can often catch Mr. Walker at local spots such as Mulligans, Watering Hole, Paddy’s, B3 and many more favorites in the state. In other instances and ones that are near and dear to my heart, you will find JB as one of the more charitable musicians ever. He has been known to frequent and headline events that support local persons or interests. In his musical career, JB has been a past President of ABATE and March

On July 18, 2015, the 1st Annual Kids-n-Chrome motorcycle ride was held to benefit the children served by Polk and Haralson CASA. CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, is an organization that advocates for neglected and abused children who are involved in the Court system, and ensures that their best interests are served, and voices heard. This year’s ride started in Cedartown at Beeler Insurance, and ended at Knucklehead Café in Rockmart. Lots of bikers and CASA volunteers came out to show their support for this great cause. Local businesses also showed a lot of sponsorship support, with some local business owners participating in the ride, and donating raffle
items to help raise money as well. Belinda Bentley, the Director of Polk/Haralson CASA, said this year’s ride was a huge success, and offered a special thank you to the Unified Brothers for organizing this year’s ride, as well as her volunteers, staff, and the local businesses that helped to make this year’s event a success. We know next year’s ride will be even bigger, and are looking forward to it already. If you would like to learn more about CASA, or being a CASA volunteer, please contact Belinda Bentley at (770) 748-2414. SEE BUTCH PATRICK AT ANGEL CITY
Biker Movie Review
firing range… It gets worse! Crazy Willie, an older local – perhaps homeless- person comes in contact with John and Zip near an old shack in the desert. They almost playfully chase Willie on their bikes and finally capture him. He tells John about his friend Frank who had committed suicide in the shack. John goes to the shack and discovers the body and believes the case is not a suicide, but a murder. The coroner later arrives and disagrees with John who was feverishly taking notes. After a shouting match with the coroner, in walks Detective Harve Poole, who admires Wintergreen’s savvy, and arranges for Wintergreen to be transferred to homicide as his ‘driver’ to help with the case. Harve and John return to the shack and find a large statue of Jesus, which is full of “Reds” and as the investigation continues, John and Harve interrogate a group of hippies, looking for a drug dealer named Bob Zemko. The theme of good cop – bad cop comes into play as Harve roughs some of the hippies up after John had nicely questioned them. John’s initial joy at being promoted is short-lived, as his relationship with Harve deteriorates after he finds out that John has been sleeping with ‘Jolene” (Harve’s girlfriend) and the waitress at the local bar. But when Jolene mocks Harve’s sexual prowess (implying that Harve is impotent) and brags that Wintergreen can “go three times in one morning” things just go downhill for our hero and he is demoted back to traffic. After a wild motorcycle and car chase the pair capture and question Biker “Exploitation” is a term coined by producers, actors, and Zemko. More good cop - bad cop scenes cause Wintergreen to ultimately YOU the viewer. Not all biker films are actually geared eventually realize that Crazy Willie committed the murder; the victim at the (exploitation) or in other words, the “bad” angle of the biker was an old friend of his who had taken to selling the drugs and lifestyle. Some of these actually “miss the target” and simply feature hanging around with a younger crowd. Jealous, Willie had murdered the motorcycle as secondary component to the plot. However, in his friend and arranged it so it appeared to be a suicide. literally every film involving bikers or the biker ‘lifestyle’, one thing you, As usual there is some stolen money, and the search for this money as a viewer can count on is the presence of the Police. Electra Glide is when Wintergreen discovers another terrible fact: Zipper’s dream in Blue has the unique twist of actually using story of a motorcycle was to own his own motorcycle, and had stolen the dead man’s drug money (initially blamed on Zemko) to pay for it. At Zippers trailer in cop as the baseline. In this film, Blake plays a motor officer named John Wintergreen. His the desert, the movie’s theme is uncovered when zipper shows John character is not really into being a ‘traffic cop’ as he has aspired to the “Electra Glide in Blue” sitting in the yard. become a homicide detective. In my opinion, if you had to be a cop, Later, Zipper is drunk and begins firing his gun at Wintergreen, missing what better job than cruising around on your departmentally funded him but striking a random passer-by. Wintergreen then shoots Zipper Harley? But hey, this review isn’t about me, it’s about the film!! Back in self-defense, and Zipper dies in his arms. Back in the desert on patrol, Wintergreen spots the same van that was to the chase, and no code-4! John Wintergreen patrols the rural Arizona highways with his partner featured earlier in the film, and he pulls it over. He recognizes one of “Zipper.” Wintergreen is laid-back but upright about enforcing the the hippies as the very same one that Zip had planted the drugs on law, while Zipper is predominately lazy. Zipper likes busting Hippies in the beginning of the film, and decides to let them go. They take (remember them?) even going so far as to plant evidence on a young off down the highway, but Wintergreen realizes that he still has the ‘hippie’ during a search of his van. Wintergreen again proves to be hippie’s Driver license in his hand. As he tries once again to pull the the polar opposite of his partner Zipper, as he continuously states how van over to return the license, the passenger opens the rear window much he hates riding his motorcycle, and Zipper’s only real dream is and fires a shotgun killing Wintergreen. It’s a very sad ending to a to own his own motorcycle. Zip spends a lot of time reading comic really weird flick! For me, this is where the whole deal goes bad. The books, and eating junk food while John takes his job seriously. One movie is loaded with plagiarism of the iconic film “Easy Rider.” Yeah, I of the things about Wintergreen that is out of place in this film is (in believe that “Electra Glide in Blue” truly is a ‘cult-classic’ sort of piece, one scene) he is firing his pistol at an “Easy Rider” poster in the police but the constant blasts from Easy Rider kinda turned me off. Recently I was walking through the garage and took a quick look at my bike, which caused me to sigh deeply! Hopefully you’ll understand that my bike is not a show bike, it’s not even heavily chromed out, just a few parts that add a sparkle to the way it looks. There is also some modest pin striping to complete the look. That being said, the bike is not always BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM
spotless, but I do take pleasure in looking at the paint and chrome and realizing what a blessing I have in owning and riding it. When I took stock of the condition of filth that completely bathed the bike and thought of what it usually looks like, I couldn’t help but think of the effort it was going to take to give the bike a proper cleaning. There was mud from Tennessee, grime from North Carolina, and clay from Georgia, all mixed together for a grunge look. I’ll have to give it a general washing, use brushes on the wheels, and soft clothes on the chrome. Likely, I’ll also need to get it on the floor stand in order to be able to reach around the pipes and saddlebags. Seeing my ride that filthy didn’t lift my spirits but made me realize there was a price to be paid for where I had ridden. I will need to cleanse the bike from the layers of debris and make it clean again. It’s amazing how looking at a dirty motorcycle can remind me about life and the grime and filth into which we sometimes get ourselves. Like my ride getting dirty from use and exposure, my life needs to be cleaned up from
the failures, wrong attitudes, and downright rebellion that happen when I make bad choices. When I search for peace in my life, I have to find a way to remove the muck and the mire from coating me in its filthiness. Fortunately there is One who can wash the wrongdoing from our lives and make us clean and forgiven for things we have done in the past. That cleansing leads us to finding a peace and a joy that surpasses any joy that could come from our rebellion or disobedience. His name is Jesus! The Living Bible tells us, in 1 John 1:7, “If we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ does, then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from every sin.” This means that no matter what we have done in the past or how much filth we have in our lives, forgiveness is available to us if we will turn from our sinful ways and follow Jesus as our Lord. Then our lives too can sparkle and shine because of His love, all cleaned up! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
