Warm Springs, Georgia, originally named Bullochville (after the family of Martha Bulloch Roosevelt), first came to prominence in the 19th century as a spa town, because of its mineral springs which flow constantly at nearly 90 °F. Residents of Georgia began spending vacations at Bullochville in the late 18th century as a way to escape yellow fever, finding the number of warm springs in the vicinity of Bullochville very soothing. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt spent quite a bit of time in the mineral springs to relieve the symptoms of his paralytic illness, and passed away there in 1945. Since ‘Bullochville’ seemed such a bland name, the residents changed the name to ‘Warm Springs.’ The introduction of the automobile made other destinations more attractive, and Warm Springs began to decline. Happily, over the past 20 years, Warm Springs has become a destination location for motorcyclists from all over the Southeast US. Along with entrepreneur Mr. Preston Evans, Mr. Dan Forrest has been instrumental in building Warm Springs into a premier destination or stopover for riders. Dan is the owner of Xtreme Rider, one of the most complete rider-apparel stores in the Southeast. Dan hails from Woodstock, Vermont; after graduation, he went into the floor covering business in the Northeast and did quite well. However, the cold winters were too much, and Dan moved the family and business to Orlando where he became even more successful. In addition to floor covering, he became involved in printing and promotional businesses. BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Over time, the firm for which he then worked transferred him to Lagrange, Georgia, about half an hour’s ride from Warm Springs. While continuing his print businesses, Dan said; “I was bored,” and so began Xtreme Rider, which only does business on Saturday, Sunday, and Mondays’ which are national holidays. Nevertheless, Xtreme Rider does a substantial six-figure business with bikers from all over. Dan’s business partner is his wife Sue, a rider with her own H-D Street Glide. Without any retail business experience, Dan opened Xtreme Rider in February 2004, in a 12’ x 15’ building. Dan used packing crates with wheels on them for his warehouse. When a customer asked for a specific piece, they simply went through the packing crates until he found the particular garment that the customer desired. Nine months later, they moved to a 600 square-foot facility, and in two years they outgrew that location. A nice 1,800 square-foot building became available down the street, and after renovation and additions, now houses Xtreme Rider. What will we find at Xtreme Rider? “Well, many first-time customers gravitate to our Consignment Shop, where old leathers that have been in the closet for a while and have shrunk over time can find a new home with a skinnier moto-human. We recently sold a Willie G jacket in a ladies size, originally priced at $595 and the consignment shop let it go for $125. In addition, the Consignment Shop will accept motorcycle parts, so long as the specific make, model, and year of

the particular part is specified.” “Riders can find quality garments from Milwaukee Leather, Interstate Leather, Dream Apparel, First Manufacturing, Xelement Leathers, and Hot Leathers,” Dan explains. “Helmets from HJC, Rodia and Scorpion are popular, and include sizes and head-shapes more suitable for ladies, too. And, for clubs’ Halloween dress-up parties, novelty helmets are also available.” Sue and Dan have more to say about their store, but they are just as passionate about the many amenities in Warm Springs. Whether your Sunday ride is solo, or a small group of friends enjoying the beautiful scenic roads in the area— which include Pine Mountain, the famed Georgia Highway 109, and Dowdell’s Knob. Whether you’re a big club or charity ride, a rest-stop or an overnight excursion in Warm Springs should be on your agenda. “This is a fun place to come to! We have the world’s shortest and steepest covered bridge, no less than four museums containing a plethora of motorcycles—pre-war Indians, Harleys and Triumphs— and related memorabilia, as well as reminders from the old life—a Harley-Davidson jukebox, for example, a Retired Helmet Tree, tours of the Little White House, the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute, which for many years was the only treatment facility for unfortunates suffering from paralytic diseases. For history buffs, the artifacts from the Roosevelt era are fascinating, and include Roosevelt’s

automobiles, wheelchairs, and much more such memorabilia.” After a quick tour of a few of these attractions, Dan got down to business again: “Women riders, who traditionally have a hard time finding quality moto-apparel that fits will almost certainly find what they’re looking for at Xtreme Rider. We have 13 styles of vests, 14 styles of jackets, six different boot styles, five different chaps and a nearly unlimited supply of gloves for the ladies’ more delicate hands. Almost any size human will find what they’re looking for in our store. For rainy weather, you can find raingear in our store. Two hardto-find trinkets that are always in demand can be found at Xtreme Rider; helmet-strap latches and biker-pin locks. Surprisingly, we do a very big business in Christian T-shirts by Kerruso, too.” The staff at Xtreme Rider is bound by Dan’s dictum of ‘Quality service second to none,’ and their ultimate goal to send customers away happy. “We guarantee everything we sell, and if you find yourself unhappy with a purchase, come back and we will make sure you become satisfied and happy!” A seamstress is available to make minor repairs on leathers and sew on patches for customers; heattransfer images are also available. While Xtreme Rider is primarily focused on leather gear, they offer the alternative of textile riding gear from makers such as Joe Rocket and others. “This is truly a destination location; we have built a stage in a bandstand used by clubs and groups when they come to Warm

Springs. We can easily handle 300 or more motorcycles at that venue, and have had as many as 1,200 bikes in town at one time in the past. The heart of Warm Springs is the Biker Village which contains a Biker Pub and several of the museums mentioned earlier. One, Art in Motion, is a veritable American Pickers honey-hole. Viewers of this popular TV show well know Mike and Frank’s passion for motorcycle, and Art in Motion won’t disappoint. This museum has a section called ‘Route 66’ containing murals of Sturgis, Daytona and other popular moto-destinations, which can be used as photographic backdrops for visitors astride various prop-bikes. Who knows, you might want to have your picture taken with Marilyn Monroe, or Elvis Presley! And, have you ever seen a Centaur scooter? It was designed for military use, and folds up to a suitcase-size for airdelivery to a soldier by parachute; stop by and check it out. You may find some old friends in the Wax Museum, too.” The American Spirit TV program has featured Xtreme Rider, Warm Springs, and the various adjacent museums and businesses in past shows. Next summer, as your passing through Warm Springs in the heat of the day, stop by for a nice ice cream cone. If your plans call for an overnight stay at the Hotel Warm Springs Bed and Breakfast Inn, the Meriwether Inn, or the nearby F. D. Roosevelt State Park (tents, and RVs up to 40’), you may wish to enjoy the produce of the Warm Springs Winery. Featuring Muscadine wine and seasonal

wines such as Peach, Burgundy, Cream Brulee’ and the featured Hotlanta Red which is bottled with red and jalapeno peppers. Dan and Sue recommend it! Warm Springs now welcomes the Moto tourist with open arms, but it was not always this way; when Dan and Preston began to promote the town as a Destination Location, residents were skeptical. All that has changed as residents and merchants began to realize the benefits of moto-tourists visiting their quaint ‘1930s Town from the Past.’ Recently, Dan asked the Town Mayor, a lady of 74 summers, to rename Main Street to ‘Lil’ Sturgis Street. The mayor put the question to the Town Council which governs all of 478 residents, and it was approved unanimously. Interestingly, the biggest influence was the character and behavior of motorcyclists while visiting Warm Springs. In his past spare time, Dan, initially a teenage Triumph rider, now rides a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, has served fellow riders as the past ABATE of GA state director, and was a founder of a 501(c)3 for rider-safety, ‘Look Twice – Save A Life.’ Sue and Dan Forrest are dedicated in service to fellow motorcyclists, and invite you, your friends, your clubs and the events you enjoy to ‘clutches out and wheels turning’ as you set your sights on an enjoyable few hours or several days at one of the Southeast’s best two-wheel Destination Locations, Warm Springs, Georgia. These treatment pools were supplanted in 1942 by an indoor pool built on the main foundation Campus due to the difficulty of moving patients to these pools. The treatment pools were then used occassionally for treatment and for recreation but were finally closed in the 1960’s. The Department of Natural Resources stabilized and renovated the springs and pools complex for the visitation during 1994-95 for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of F.D.R.’s death.

Nine riders from the Albany, GA area embarked on a 15-day, 5,000 mile destination and discovery ride to the Black Hills of South Dakota and beyond. Six are members of the Independent Harley Riders Association (IHRA); IHRA President, Jim Williams with members Ricky Collins and Danny Smith. Three of those six IHRA members are also dual members of the Sylvester, GA American Legion Riders (ALR) Post 335; ALR Director & IHRA Treasurer, Paul Murray, dual members, Ben Lockett and Ray Jennings. Rounding out the group was ALR member Dana Ashberry with two guests, Jimmy Wages and David Tucker. The morning of the 8 AM Saturday departure claimed Ricky Collins’ bike, even though the week prior to the trip, he had started his bike numerous times, but of course that morning it would not start. He told us to go on and he would catch up, which he did at Memphis. For most of the entire trip, I led the way using my Garmin GPS/ Sirius XM—broadcasting through my Sena intercom system and Dana brought up the rear, also using a Sena for safety. Whenever the group lagged behind or got caught at stoplights, especially going through large cities, Dana would notify me of the situation. It also came in

handy when someone needed to stop due to physical or mechanical problems. When you have that many going on a trip, it will and did happen a few times. This communication system helped in determining whether to slow down, pull over, or go back to help. The first overnight stop was a 470 mile trip to Memphis. The first leg up was pretty hot and we began stopping around every 150 miles and arrived around dinner time. This allowed a group of us to go check out the famous Beale Street in downtown Memphis, where we tried the deep-fried ribs at the Superior Bar & Restaurant. Beale Street was like a miniature Mardi Gras, and there were plenty of law enforcement vehicles on each corner. Later on that evening, I received a call from Ricky. The motel was off of I-55, but he couldn’t find I-55. He said he had been circling I-40 around Memphis for over an hour, so I told him that if he could find Beale Street we would meet him at the Hard Rock Café. Ray and I walked into the Hard Rock to wait for Ricky—we sat in the foyer on some stools. I told Ray, “I’ll check ID’s and you collect the cover charge.” We did this for the first couple that came in and then laughed about it and gave them their money back. After having spent many

hours on Beale Street, we weren’t feeling much pain. I was glad we used the motel’s shuttle to get to Beale. We finally got a call from Ricky that he found the motel. The next leg of our trip was to Kansas City. It was even hotter than the day before, and we were stopping every 100 miles. When we arrived, we talked about eating some good Kansas City steak, but we were tired and there was a Minsky’s Pizza conveniently across from the motel, so that’s where we ended up for dinner. The next day we entered Nebraska and I was in desperate need of fuel. We stopped at a Phillips 66 station just South of Omaha. When we pulled in, we were greeted by the proprietor, who told us that they were out of premium and the truck would be here shortly with regular. There happened to be the Loess Hills Harley shop less than a ½ mile down the road, so we rode down there just as it opened. Ricky had asked the dealership about getting a new rear tire. It took five of them in the service department to figure out that they were booked up. I have been on numerous trips throughout the country and heard that if you were on a trip, the Harley shop would service you as soon as they could. I have experienced this expedited service myself many times. We were getting on our bikes to leave, when two of the guys from service ran out and told Ricky that they had found a spot for him. They partially redeemed themselves, but they were too late. When we left Harley, we noticed dark clouds near Omaha, so we adjusted our BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

route further west. Since we still hadn’t gotten any gas, I was really low. After crossing an old swing bridge, we found a station in a small town, where I pumped 5.052 gallons into my 5-gallon tank. I was literally riding on fumes. Rolling through Nebraska, we were dwarfed by rows of corn. Our destination was a two-night stopover in Neligh, NE, where a former co-worker of Ben’s lived, Robert “Hen” Henderson. Hen opened up his home to accommodate us, as well as a cabin in the country. Two days of rest was good for us, but we were ready to head on our way. We said goodbye and thanked Hen and after a half day of riding, pulled into Custer, SD in the afternoon. It was early enough to take advantage of riding to see the Chief Crazy Horse Monument. It was so big, you can fit all the heads of Mt. Rushmore in the head of Crazy Horse. The rest of the 5 days and 4 nights were spent riding through the Badlands to Wall Drugs, Custer State Park, along with Iron Mountain highway, Needles Highway and Spearfish Canyon. In Deadwood, we visiting Wild Bill Hickok’s gravesite on Mt. Moria Boot Hill and of course, the main destination, Sturgis. Even though it was the weekend before the official start date, Sturgis was packed and already a zoo. It took us an hour from crossing the I-90 to the Full Throttle Saloon. We first headed to the saloon and then learned about a better deal from fellow IHRA member Walt

Nine riders from the Georgia embarked on a 15-day, 5,000 mile destination to Sturgis, SD

Scan it See it.. Pollard, who was already camped at the Glenco Campgrounds. A new establishment, the “Beaver Bar,” had just been built across from the Full Throttle with beer for only $2, as well as a motorcycle stunt show that took place inside. The gas in Sturgis was $3.89 a gallon, and I heard that some restaurants even had local and separate biker menus. The big thing in the restaurants was the buffalo burger or stew. The beer at FT was $5.50, so $2 beer for both Bud and Miller was a real bargain for bikers. Owner, Leslie Beaver, was already well known in the Myrtle Beach area and had also built a new place in Daytona for next year’s 75th Anniversary, as well as the new one in Sturgis. Both FT and Beaver Bar were directly across from each other, so a barricade consisting of rubber poles were in the center of the highway. They were spaced so that it would not allow a car to go through but a bike could. I was sitting at the Beaver Bar exit when a guy on his bike asked me about going through the barricade. I told him I don’t think I would and then he disappeared. I went down to the end of the barricade and turned around to get gas, when I was pulled over by a State trooper and given a “Welcome to Sturgis” $120 certificate for an illegal U-turn. I later found out I could’ve gone down to the end of the Beaver Bar’s parking lot to the gas station. After gassing up, David and I went downtown to Sturgis’ Main Street to look around. When the sun went down, it was a cold ride back to Custer. Ray had headed on the way back to Albany, while six of us left Custer BTR 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM

the next day and continued west to Billings, MT. Dana and Danny had never been to Devil’s Tower or Custer’s Last Stand, Little Big Horn, so they set out in that direction and we were to meet up later. After Billings, MT, our next stop was at Red Lodge for gas, afterwards riding up through 10,947’ Beartooth Pass just northeast of Yellowstone Park, where we met a group of Australians. After stopping at a souvenir shop, half of the group went to Yellowstone, while the rest of us that had already been to the park numerous times, headed for Cody, WY by way of the Chief Joseph Highway. The last time we rode this highway, one of our riders ran out of gas because he didn’t fill up in Billings like the rest of us. There are also no stations between Red Lodge and Cody. This time Ricky, who was at the rear, said he had a cougar pacing him along the edge of the highway (not the kind of cougar in Sturgis, but a mountain lion). We rode into Cody in time for lunch. The last time we were here, we tried some “Rocky Mountain Oysters,” but this time we ate the Silver Dollar Café’s famous burgers. The next morning a few hours were spent at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum, which had one of the nicest collections of firearms, especially Winchesters. We left Cody around noon for Laramie, WY and ran into some rain showers, which was the only rain we ran into during the entire 15-day trip. We got to the motel in Colorado Springs, near the base of Pike’s Peak early and it gave us time to ride up the 14,015’ mountain. The

last time Ben and I rode up in 2005, it was mostly a gravel road. It was so bad that stones lodged in between the side of my front fender and whitewalls that it took chunks of rubber out of my sidewalls. I kept those tires as a souvenir of the trip up the mountain. Pikes Peak is the 2nd oldest race in the U.S. Much to the displeasure of the racers and park rangers, it was paved in 2011. Even so, it was still a series of hairpin switchbacks that made the Dragon’s Tail at Deal’s Gap a joke. At the top, many of us found it hard to breath in such thin air at that altitude. You had to be very cautious not only on the way up, but also on the way down. Traffic would stop suddenly and you had to be literally on your toes on your bike. On the way down, I lost my rear brakes and used my engine mostly to slow down. On the way back to the motel, we rode through the “Garden of the Gods” which had monuments of natural sandstone. That evening, I spent the time bleeding my rear brakes in the motel parking lot. The next morning, I walked into a mess of waffle dough on the breakfast room floor. Jim had pushed the waffle dough dispenser the wrong way and a gallon of dough spilled all over the floor. The motel desk clerk who had to clean it up was real happy with that, and Jim got the ride name of “Waffle.” The trip back home was planned 550 mile legs mostly on the Interstate with the first overnight leg to Topeka, KS. The motel was conveniently located right across from Hooters. Taking no guesses on where we went. As we were sitting in Hooters, we noticed some weird stuff on Jim’s boot and laughed about the waffle dough that was still stuck on

it. The next leg was an overnight in Memphis. We were so tired, no one cared about going back to Beale Street, so we sat in the room eating Papa John’s Pizza. The next day, we headed for the last leg home. Going though Birmingham, we came across some construction with the left lane closed, as well as an accident. We sat there in the heat burning up, when Ricky, who was at the end of the pack, came around us and took the first exit. Ben and I were jammed up in the left lane and couldn’t get out. Most of the group went by way of Montgomery, while I went down to 5th Avenue and back onto the highway 280 exit to Auburn, Columbus, getting home an hour before everyone else. The main thing was that we all got back home safely. I had heard from girlfriends and spouses that for the next few days some of the guys were in a “daze for days.” For some of us who are approaching our mid 70s it may be our last trip. I first went to Sturgis in 1994. Some of us went because we thought it was the ride of a lifetime that we would not do again. I then went again in 1995 and was lucky to have continued for my seventh time for the 75th Anniversary. Each trip was a trip of a lifetime! It’s not really about Sturgis; it’s about the ride and spectacular scenery there, the trip up and back. If you are fortunate to go further west into Yellowstone, you will appreciate the nature of God’s work. Those of you who have been on the trip know what I am talking about. Those of you who have not, have something to look forward to doing.

Special Thanks to Paul and his crew for the story and if you one to share, let us know.

Steven Tyler Reads it!

Biker Movie Review

Out of all the ‘biker exploitation’ movies I have reviewed, this one may be the funniest! The 1991 film features Billy Bob Thornton, MTV VeeJay Martha Quinn, and a few other B movie celebs. This movie has it all – hot chicks, lesbians, motorcycles, midgets and a troop of blind orphans - who wouldn’t love it? First off I must tell you the Chopper Chicks don’t actually ride “Choppers” but they do ride Sportsters, all equipped with engine guards and various custom paint jobs. The girls in the film are members of an all female motorcycle gang called the “Cycle Sluts” which in itself is funny. They do have the usual trappings of women traveling in groups, such as being on the rag, and searching for meat. Anyway, the film begins when the Cycle Sluts cruise into the small town of Zariah looking for a good time. In Zariah, an evil scientist turned mortician has been killing local townspeople with the help of dwarf that he continually abuses. After turning the folks into zombies, he uses them as labor at an abandoned mine. The mine is too radioactive

after underground nuclear testing to be mined by living people. He later admits the real reason he’s doing it isn’t for the money, it’s because he’s just plain mean. The zombies are released when a curious little boy opens a door in the apparently abandoned mine, thus releasing the un-dead, and of course this act is his un-doing. In the mean time, the girls are in town, and decide to split up and go look for some meat. One of them is run over by the mortician, and is turned into a zombie, while the others find their way into various sexual situations with the local guys. This is where we first meet Billy Bob who plays the ex of one of the chopper chicks. They meet in a church where the dwarf is attempting to shoot her, and retreat to his trailer for some fun. Another mistake for the midget, and more punishment later, the zombies are still marching on, and they are getting hungry! On the way to town the zombies encounter a group of blind orphans, who are stranded just on the outskirts after their bus breaks down. Luckily for the kids their bus-driver always keeps an Uzi on the bus (for sentimental reasons) and while the driver seeks help the kids (shooting blindly) manage to hold off the zombies until the chopper chicks arrive to rescue them in a hearse. Even though the girls are doing some good deeds, the locals don’t seem to like them too much and repeatedly attempt to run them out of town. That is until the town is overrun by blood thirsty zombies! But wait – the town folk refuse to help the girls fight the zombies because “they are all family.’’ Hordes of zombies begin eating their relatives as the girls fight them off. The dwarf decides to turn against the mortician, and tells the girls that the only way to kill the zombies is to “cut their heads off.” The chopper chicks use baseball bats, chainsaws, and other devices to do away with many of them, but just when they think they have won, dozens more arrive. The girls devise a plan to lure all the remaining zombies into the church using raw meat as bait. They load the meat truck with dynamite, and crash it into the church. The timer on the dynamite goes off and the church goes up in flames burning up most of the remaining zombies. In the final scenes the Cycle Sluts are rewarded with a sack full of cash and induct the dwarf and several of the blind orphans as honorary members of their gang. They then ride out of town with some of the men folk (their new ‘bitches’) on the back of their bikes and toss wads of money into the wind as they roll down the road to a new destination and adventure. This review could not possibly expose you to all the hilarious action that this film provides. It is sometimes so ridiculous that you would find yourself rolled up in a knot from uncontrollable laughter. It takes shots at old films, TV and life in general, but it never leaves you bored. I admit that I have a sick sense of humor, but for some unknown reason, I actually liked this film! (I usually don’t) Try this one out. It’s available on DVD from Troma Films, www.troma.com or at your local ‘strange DVD dealership.’ I have to give this one 4 out of 4 stars just because it’s super-funny… Till next month. The Phantom

Recently, my wife and I hopped on the bike for one of those rides to nowhere, just to get away and grab a good lunch in our travel. It was mid-morning and we decided to take one of our favorite twistee rides, ending up in a neighboring county where they serve some fantastic Mexican grub. My mouth was watering in anticipation! As we headed down the road, at a relaxed BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM

and enjoyable pace, I noticed two issues that caught my attention. First, at the entrance to most of the curves, someone got the bright idea to put up flashing warning lights that also flashed the message “SLOW DOWN.” I suppose the thought behind these lights was to make those curves safer to travel. In a car I would agree, but we were on a bike. The main thing the flashing lights and words did was pull my eyes OFF of the road and AWAY from the path I was traveling! The effect is that it had a negative impact on the ride, as I had to spend more time intentionally looking away from the signs. The other thing I noticed was that being midmorning there were a lot of shadows across the road, and it was hard to tell if I was looking at a shadow or a patch of loose sand on the road. The shadows were comforting in the relief they gave from the hot sun. It made the road and surrounding areas look more like a piece of art to admire, but those same shadows made me raise up my guard as I rode to keep us on a safe ride. Basically, the shadows were a major distraction to our travel.

You know, shadows can cause the same distractions in our travels through life; we can get distracted and travel into unsafe areas, thinking we are OK. We can make poor decisions, say things that hurt the ones we love, or even put us in physical danger. The diversion of the shadows in our lives can confuse our way, and the choices we make, leading to problems we never anticipated having to face. Fortunately there is One who is the answer to every shadow that comes our way, and that puts a light in our path to lead and guide us. In Job 12:22 (NIV), the Bible says, “He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into the light.” You know, when we trust the Lord to guide and direct us, His light shines so brightly that the shadows disappear, and we can see our way more clearly. He not only gives us guidance, He walks with us through our lives, giving a peace that is beyond all understanding. Have you experienced the comfort that comes from His overcoming the shadows in your life? Trust in the Lord, and He will light your path every step of the way! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
