THE LANE CHANGER
While riding in the right lane of a three-lane highway, you decide to pass a slower-moving car by changing lanes to your left. Just as you begin to move left, a car in the far left lane also decides to pass by moving to the right, and suddenly the two of you are fighting for the same lane. When it’s car-versus-bike, you already know the outcome. Strategy: By actively searching the present traffic environment you should have observed the car two lanes over, and predicted that the driver would end up in your target lane if she decided to change lanes and pass at the same time you did. Separate yourself from the hazard: either wait a few moments to pass, until the car in the far left lane has moved ahead, or slow down to drop back a car length. It is also a wise tactic to signal several seconds before making a move, and to turn your head occasionally to check your blind spot to better observe surrounding traffic. A.P.A.C.K. Fallen Officers Ceremony & Dice Run
The Lt. Cliff Rouse Memorial Ride had been a few years old, when Jerry Jennings, president of American People Against Cop Killers in Brooksville, FL, noticed the event on Facebook. Jerry contacted Captain Angel Bradford of the Albany Police Department about ride info and rode up from Brooksville to attend. In the following years, more and more members of APACK rode up to Albany to support the event. Deputy Sheriff Lonnie Coburn, was killed in a similar incident, both Lt. Cliff Rouse and Deputy Coburn were killed by perpetrators robbing a convenience store. Rouse was killed when one of the bullets hit him under his bullet proof vest and Coburn was jumped and shot through the side of his vest. Former Florida Deputies Duval and Jennings started the Lonnie Coburn Memorial Run, and because of its success APACK was formed to remind people of the supreme sacrifice some Florida law enforcement officers have made and to demand severe punishment to those who perpetrate these crimes. Just as Jerry and APACK members had travelled up to Albany to support the Rouse Run, this year, a large entourage consisting of Rouse Committee members, Blue Knights GA III members, American Legion Riders of Sylvester Post 335, and guests travelled nearly 300 miles to Brooksville for APACK’s annual Fallen Officers Ceremony and Ride held the 3rd Saturday in May. Although Highway 19 was not the fastest route, it was the most scenic and direct route. On the way down near the destination, a “mandatory” stop was at the Crystal River Harley-Davidson dealership. One member contemplated getting a new Tri-Glide, but postponed it until a later date. The weather was hot and humid, typical Florida weather. A mile from the motel, the “Rain Gods” decided to “baptize” the group, soaking most of them. Turns were taken at the motels dryer. First come, first served went out the window and the drier was shared among all who wanted their clothes dried. The only saving grace was that the Outback restaurant, which was adjacent the motel, where all were able to relax and eat. The

entertainment of the evening was when some of the members told the restaurant staff that it was Ben Lockett’s birthday (it wasn’t) and upon returning to his table, he was greeted by traditional song and ice cream. The next day, on the dice run ride, 82 riders departed the Captain’s Corner in Brooksville for an 80-mile run throughout Hernando and surrounding counties. The ride ended back at Captain’s Corner for lunch and a band. There were a lot of door prizes and raffles including a drawing for an AR-15 and Sig P320 pistol. One of the Albany riders, John Patton, won the Sig and was elated. The trip back home to the Albany, GA area was interrupted by a thunderstorm in the Perry, FL area and continued until reaching the Georgia border. All returned safely and were ready to do it again next year. Blue Knights Ga. REFLECTIONS ON ROLLING THUNDER It started from the Pentagon, it was an awesome sight, A motorcade of cyclists, an entourage of knights. Winding through the streets, as far as you can see, Across Memorial Bridge, through Washington, DC
Up Independence Avenue, and ‘round the Capitol, By Washington’s Monument, on and on they roll. Down Constitution Avenue, past the reflecting pool. The roar of different cycles, but all playing the same tune. Past the cheering crowds, lined up along the street, With their hands outstretched, to bikers they would greet. Where do they all come from, why is it they come? From Pacific, North and South, like sounds of rolling drums. From rows of eight across, to fifteen bikes abreast, Assorted motorcycles, honoring the best. The ultimate direction, for the bikers all, All headed down the city’s streets, for the Viet Nam Wall. Feelings of emotions and feelings of much pride, Respect for those missing, and in ‘Nam that died. Despite the controversy, they were well up to the task. Those inscribed upon the wall, served when they were asked. They gave their lives for us, so that we may be free, Free to live and ride, wherever that we please. For POW/MIA’s, that is why we roam, Never to be forgotten, bring all of them back home. Author: Paul B. Celebrate America’s Independance and always Honor Our Veterans who protect our Freedom.
Goodbye, Nicky
The motorcycling world was rocked recently with the shocking news of racer Nicky Hayden’s tragic cycling accident and subsequent death. Fans the world over mourned the passing of an American icon in motorcycle racing. Nicky had excelled in AMA flat track and road racing, winning championships in each across the late 90s and early 2000s, then left his mark internationally by taking the 2006 MotoGP World Superbike Championship. The past couple of years saw Nicky move to WSBK, World Superbike, already challenging the lead riders and teams there. In an age that currently sees few Americans competing on the international stage, not only was Nicky there representing us all, he was winning races and winning fans. As well as his achievements, Nicky was beloved the world over with his chiseled good looks, broad smile, affable Kentucky personality, and Southern drawl. His popularity arguably rivaled that of the world renowned Valentino Rossi, his friend, former teammate and rival on the track. And in an instant, he was gone, felled in an unlikely accident, hit by a car while on a bicycle, of all things. I had followed his career and been a “Kentucky Kid” fan since his first days of moving up from AMA to MotoGP in 2003. I met his “kid brother” Roger Lee recently, himself competing successfully in MotoAmerica. From all I’ve seen and read, the Haydens are a closeknit, loving, down-to-earth Southern family, morally upright and allAmerican. The whole Hayden clan has been steeped in motorcycle racing practically since diapers, with parents Earl “The Squirrel” and Rose instilling a love of motorcycles and racing in each of their five children (3 boys and 2 girls). The “First Family of Racing” made American race fans proud and excited about the sport, whether in road racing, flat track, or motocross, as sons Tommy, Nicky, and Roger Lee each excelled in American and international competition. Nicky’s achievements particularly have been truly legendary: Multiple AMA Grand National Flat Track winner- 1999-2002 AMA Supersport National Champion- 1999 Daytona 200 Champion- 2002 AMA Superbike Champion- 2002 MotoGP World Superbike Champion- 2006 WSBK World Superbike winner, Sepang GP- 2016 Nicky Hayden’s passing reminds me of several truths. First, life is fragile. We humans, for all our intelligence, creativity and BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM
industriousness, are still so easily broken, so easily disabled, so easily killed. The strongest person on the planet can still be vanquished with something as simple and small as a river stone (see the beloved “David & Goliath” story). I’ve come to grips with my own fragility, as age and health issues have altered my life in recent years. Which brings me to the second truth- life is fleeting. We are only here for a short time, and nothing modern science and medicine achieves will lengthen our days. The good Lord set our time here to be no longer than 120 years (see Genesis 6:3), and even that is only rarely attained. Time flies by, like a breath vapor on a winter’s day or a morning mist over the mountains in summer. Ask any senior adult, and they’ll attest to this. Here one day, gone the next. Lastly, to quote from the movie Gladiator, “What we do in life, echoes in eternity.” As a person of faith, the Bible teaches me that human length of days and level of achievement are all for naught apart from the things I do that honor God, and better the lives of my fellow man. Nicky and the whole Hayden family have been selfless, humble philanthropists, supporting many meaningful causes stateside and across the globe. A true, lasting legacy beyond racing. Life is fragile, life is fleeting, and life is best lived selflessly. Nicky Hayden reached the pinnacle of motorcycle racing. He was a fierce competitor, and beloved icon in the sport. But even more important, Nicky was a good man, with a big heart for people, and a generous, open hand to those in need. To me, that’s the highest tribute. RIP Nicky Hayden-1981-2017

THE DEBATE ABOUT LOVE JUGS OIL COOLING POWER IS OVER!
LOVE JUGS CLAIM TO BE THE MOST EFFICIENT AND POWERFUL V-TWIN ENGINE AND OIL COOLER IS NOW VERIFIED BY AN UNIMPEACHABLE LAB TEST Love Jugs recently announced the results of an independent test conducted by AMSOIL to determine the oil cooling power of Love Jugs, if any. The bottom line result determined that Love Jugs keeps the oil cooler than any cooling device of any kind - hands down and bar none. Oil temperatures at idle and in slow riding conditions tested 53.2 degrees cooler with Love Jugs on rather than off, and engine head cooling exceeded claims by over 40%. We noted the following during the testing: 1) That at idle and in slow riding conditions, non-air cooling devices contribute little if anything to the cooling process of the engine or the oil. 2) Devices made to cool the oil do just BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM
that - they cool hot oil whil with Love Jugs attached the oil never gets hot. 3) Incidental to the oil test, the 100 degree cooler engine claim was verified and exceeded as the front cylinder head was 132 degrees cooler while the rear cylinder clocked in at 145 degrees cooler
What do these blockbuster results mean for you? It means Love Jugs stands up to its claim of “The Most Powerful & Effective V-Twin Engine Cooling System In The World.” Keep your engine cooler and ride longer.

Robert “Evel” Knievel was an American popculture icon who made headlines from the mid ‘60s to the early ’80s for his daring motorcycle jumping and risk-taking attitude. A man of unabashed courage and brashness, he derived as much fame from the jumps he failed to make, and the injuries he sustained, as the many he completed. The ultimate daredevil, his fearlessness was imprinted on the imagination of the generation that witnessed his antics and inspired the next one who regard him as the godfather of extreme sports. BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Evel Knievel Museum Ribbon Cutting: Four Decades in the Making, Knievel’s Dream is Now Open! (Topeka, KS) Yes, it’s true. Robert “Evel” Knievel’s dream of creating a museum to “house his life’s memorabilia” is now a reality. As early as 1976, Knievel announced his plans to build a museum. Surprising to many, the Evel Knievel Museum is not located in Butte, Montana (Knievel’s hometown); nor is it in Las Vegas, Nevada (the venue of his infamous Wide World of Sports Caesars Palace jump). It is, in fact, in Topeka, Kansas. And when you hear the story of “Why Topeka,” Topeka, Kansas not only makes sense, but it leaves museum attendees wondering if Knievel’s influence from above isn’t as powerful as his earthly impact that created an enthusiastic generation of thrill-seekers and daredevils, inspired the X-Games, and earned him the irrefutable title of the “Godfather of Extreme Sports.” As it turns out, half of Knievel’s crew was from Kansas, including Mike Draper (Wichita, Kansas). Draper says it’s an honor to be part of history, and is thrilled to help fill in the missing pieces. When restoring “Big Red,” Knievel’s Mack Truck, the Historic HarleyDavidson crew found Draper’s first-hand
accounts priceless. “It’s this kind of detail and stories from people who were there that bring the museum to life and provide an amazing and memorable experience to visitors,” says Mike Patterson, Owner, Historic HarleyDavidson and Museum Co-Founder. One of the best stories yet, was that George “Joie” Chitwood (of the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show) got his racing start right here at the Topeka Shawnee County Fairgrounds, less than 100 yards from the home of the Evel Knievel Museum. Following Chitwood’s racing career, which included seven Indianapolis 500 races, the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show made a chance visit to Butte, Montana in 1953; 15-year-old Bobby Knievel was in the stands that day, and as they say, the rest was history. “The first time I saw Joie Chitwood perform in my hometown, Butte, Montana, the thing that impressed my 15-year-old mind the most was his intoxicating spirit and incredible showmanship. It was then that I knew this business was for me.” - Evel Knievel (Safe At Any Speed, The Career of Joie Chitwood) Fast-forward nearly six decades to 2012. Lathan McKay, a young professional skateboarder inspired by Evel Knievel, had grown up admiring Knievel as the

quintessential fulfillment of individuality and the American Dream. What started as a purchase of three sets of Knievel’s leathers turned into a four-year venture collecting Knievel memorabilia across the country. “This museum is the fulfillment of a dream for many people,” says actor, producer and entrepreneur, Lathan McKay. “It’s been an arduous but magical road.” He termed the worldwide hunt for Knievel memorabilia, “Evel Archaeology.” Shortly after his quest began, McKay personally met the Knievel Family, including Alicia Knievel Vincent, Evel’s youngest daughter, who was also present at today’s Ribbon Cutting. She shared with the crowd, “He always wanted a museum. We looked at sites together all across the nation. I want to thank everyone who made his dream a reality. I wish my dad could see it.” After meeting the family, McKay was further inspired to preserve Knievel’s legacy, and took his quest to a new level, adding “Big Red,” Knievel’s ’74 Mack Truck to his collection in 2013. Due to their outstanding work on Jerry Lee Lewis’ 1959 HarleyDavidson Panhead, the Lewis family will later recommend contacting Historic HarleyDavidson (Topeka, Kansas) for “Big Red’s” restoration. In the meantime, McKay’s quest
for preserving Knievel’s legacy has become a passionate, full-time venture. The idea for building an Evel Knievel Museum developed as the partnership between Patterson, McKay, Historic Harley-Davidson and the Knievel Family grew, along with McKay’s collection. Patterson states, “Our vision grew quickly alongside Lathan’s collection, which was both sizable and significant. We knew we had something the World would want to see, and we had to do it justice. We had one shot at this, and we were going to do it right.” Patterson’s commitment included reserving 13,000 square feet of the dealership’s 16,000 square foot expansion for the Museum. “As more items surfaced, we dedicated more space to the Museum; we even reconfigured the floorplans to accommodate several special items we received toward the end. It’s been an amazing journey, and we’re thrilled that the time has come to share this incredible collection of American history with the world.” With a total investment of more than $5 million, the Evel Knievel Museum allows visitors to experience Evel Knievel’s journey to super-stardom, viewing hundreds of authentic artifacts that belonged to the most legendary, death-defying daredevil of all

Patterson is honored and humbled by the accolades, “When you have race fans, drivers, riders and enthusiasts who grew up watching and loving Evel Knievel telling us they have goosebumps and are definitely coming back, we know we have hit the mark. You can’t measure how much those comments mean to us.”

Forty-six percent of visitors have come from outside of Kansas, including thirteen states and four foreign countries (Australia, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland). Patterson is thrilled, stating that it supports the state and city’s tourism vision and commitment to enhancing our community as a destination. “People are coming. They’ve called us, messaged us, and emailed. Just yesterday a gentleman from England bought two VIP Tickets to the Grand Opening Celebration, which will be the end of June. Guests have told us they specifically drove I-70 so they could stop and see the Museum. It’s great to hear those stories.” The Grand Opening Celebration will be June 30 and July 1. Patterson shared that the Celebration is being held to honor Knievel’s Family and Crew. Special activities will take place all weekend. “It’s an opportunity to thank them, hear their personal stories and celebrate Knievel’s legacy and the impact he had as an American icon. This is really a once-in-a-lifetime event, and it’s only a month away. It still feels a bit surreal.” Tickets are limited and can be purchased online. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/evelknievel-museum-grand-opening-celebrationtickets-34710397734 When visitors come they can see Evel’s motorcycles, including the original sheet metal painted by Evel’s artist, George Sedlak. Rainey, 2-time AMA and 3-time GP 500 world champion, founded MotoAmerica and acquired the rights to Supersport and Superbike racing from AMA three years ago. The sport that saw Americans dominate the grid and the podium for over three decades (remember Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Kevin Schwantz?), had fallen into disrepair across the 2000s, fielding as few as five race rounds in its final AMA season, 2014. Today, with 10 race rounds, multiple classes, (KTM RC 390, Supersport
I had the pleasure of talking briefly with the legend himself, Wayne Rainey, about his vision for MotoAmerica. “Our goal is to return American road racing to the national I enjoyed the opportunity to attend the consciousness. We’ve got some of the Road Atlanta round, and it was one of the best racers in the world, and we want to most exciting weekends I’ve spent in years. showcase them on the national and world A MotoAmerica event has something for the stage.” Discussing some of those racers, whole family. Along with the heart-pounding such as Josh Hayes, Roger Hayden, and racing, fans have multiple opportunities to so many others, Rainey asserts, “We’ve got meet the riders and teams, to experience a lot of great talent right here in the States. two-up rides and parade laps on course, I’d put our racers up against anyone in the and purchase all kinds of fan world.”
Speaking of racers, I had the privilege to talk with several, including Hayes himself, 4-time AMA Superbike champion. “I’m excited about this season, a chance to try and get back on top,” Hayes quips. At 42–years–old, he is one of the oldest competitors on the circuit. But like a fine wine, Hayes just seems to get better with age. “I’m not ready to retire yet, I love racing too much,” he muses. “I think I’ve still got some good years left in me!” I personally agree. Danny Eslick spoke with me briefly, always smiling and friendly. Eslick holds the distinction of being the only 3-time Daytona

200 winner, on three different manufacturers. Danny has a great affinity for Road Atlanta - “Road Atlanta is a real fast, flowing track. It wears me out, but I love running it. Such a thrilling ride! The back stretch is almost a mile long, all downhill. It’s a great place to make passes, braking late into 10A. A great overtake section.”
my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I’m so imperfect, but I’m humbled God blesses and uses me for His glory.” Gotta respect that. Asked about the sheer exertion of racing at this level, Gerloff replied, “Tucked in on the bike, there’s this pocket of calm air, no wind. So all the heat of the engine absorbs right up into your suit, and against your legs. The only relief is the times you pop up for brake I personally most enjoyed getting to know the reigning Supersport 600 champion, zones. It’s hard work, lap after lap. You lose a lot of fluids in a single race.” A Texan, Garrett Gerloff, a soft-spoken, self-effacing Gerloff certainly knows a little about heat and young man with a big heart. Upon winning hard work. Race 1, he humbly confided, “I’m just so thankful to be able to do this. I know any Motorcycle road racing is a thrilling abilities or success I have comes from yet dangerous sport. Hitting speeds of

nearly 200 mph in the larger classes, there are no harnesses, roll cages, airbag deployment systems; only what the rider is wearing. Hugging a hot, shaking, screaming motorcycle at those speeds, exposed to the elements, is both a terror and a thrill that few endeavors can match. I witnessed several shocking crashes, thankfully none of which resulted in serious injury. In Sunday’s Superbike/Superstock 1000 Race 2, just a few laps in, Josh Hayes low-sided entering turn 1, bike and rider sliding into the runout gravel at well over 100 mph. Josh was unhurt, but his bike dug in, bounced off the air fence, and careened about 20 feet in the BTR 36 | BORNTORIDE.COM
air, clearing the outer fence and clipping the bottom of a Road Atlanta/Motul billboard, before landing in the woods off the property. I had just pulled up to that corner for some photos, and barely missed the incident. Check out crash videos online: this is a dangerous sport. The MotoAmerica season runs the gamut of world-class circuits across the U.S., from old, legendary tracks like Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca, to newer marvels like Circuit of the Americas and Barber Motorsports Park. The racing is intense, as are the racers. Following Race 2 at
Road Atlanta, after two days of battling on the track for podium dominance, Cameron Beaubier and Tony Elias nearly battled in the post-race press conference, in a heated exchange that appeared to be on the verge of blows. Riders in MotoAmerica are fierce competitors, and entertaining to watch, both on and off the tracks.
I enthusiastically encourage you to check out a race close by, tune in via BeIN Sports, or subscribe for a season on the MotoAmerica website, and get hooked as I am. Every other sport seems slow and boring after “a day at the races.” Rob Brooks

WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT & HARLEY-DAVIDSON SURPRISE VETERAN WITH NEW BIKE TO LAUNCH MISSION: “THANK YOU”
Harley-Davidson has teamed up with Adam Sandoval - the founder of ScootinAmerica, an initiative that focuses on giving back to our military members - to launch MISSION: “THANK YOU”. At Harley-Davidson, we believe every American should be able to experience the profound freedom of motorcycle riding, especially those who risk their lives to protect ours. MISSION” “THANK YOU” launched at San Diego Harley-Davidson this morning. Harley-Davidson and Sandoval worked with Wounded Warrior Project to honor a WWP alumnus and veteran from San Diego with a new Harley-Davidson powered by the Milwaukee-Eight engine. Shane Kruchten, the surprised recipient and U.S. military veteran, was in shock and full of gratitude learning about his new HarleyDavidson motorcycle.Kruchten is the first

of eight honorees that will get bikes this year. Sandoval is asking every American to nominate a military member - past or present - who has dedicated their life to protecting our freedom by submitting their story of sacrifice, strength and courage of service. His cross-country MISSION: “THANK YOU” aims to thank those who have served, and are serving, to protect our freedom by giving away eight Harley-Davidson motorcycles powered by new Milwaukee-Eight engines. A panel consisting of Sandoval, Wounded Warrior Project representatives and HarleyDavidson leadership will select which seven other deserving military members will be honored with new motorcycles. The honorees will also receive a lifetime membership to the Harley Owners Group and they can give a free Harley-Davidson Riding Academy class to a loved one.
Based on America’s nominations, Sandoval will make seven special stops along his cross-country journey to give away the new Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Follow the mission on AdamSandovalRides.com or follow Adam’s journey on Facebook or Twitter. Along with MISSION: “THANK YOU,” Harley-Davidson does a lot to serve our veterans and active duty personnel. HarleyDavidson is offering the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy New Rider Course to all current and former U.S. military personnel and first responders (law enforcement, fire, and EMS) and their spouses for just $99. H-D can also provide free motorcycle storage for deployed military personnel. Additionally, Operation Extend the Ride extends the factory warranty for the number of days deployed to account for the balance of the remaining warranty period.

“Born to ride”, I think that pretty well describes me. I was born May 11, 1920 in Seven Springs, NC. My father was an owner of a small general auto repair garage, and my mother was an educator/ housewife. I was number seven of nine children. I got my hands “greasy” at age seven and built my first “salvage” Harley at age 11, from then on there was no holding me back! Country dirt roads were all we had in that area in those days, so I got “dirt” lessons early … and bruises! Everyone swore I wouldn’t last long! Ha! I was married in 1940, drafted in the Army Air Corp in 1943, did my 33 missions as flight engineer in B-24 and B-17s in European theater, and discharged in reserve in 1945. During my “reserve” time, I owned and operated an auto/tractor repair garage, flew small planes, rode my Harley, and built and drove NASCAR race cars. In 1957, I returned to “active” duty in USAF and was stationed in Libya, Spain as well as bases in the US. During my time in Europe, I was reduced to riding motor scooters in those countries! As an aircraft maintenance supervisor assigned to Tactical Air Command I was subject to many TDYs on short notice and was in Korea and other countries for as long as six months. I missed my bike! Meanwhile my wife raised our four children! I missed HER too. In 1970, I was assigned to Vietnam as “advisor” to Vietnam Air Force on HUEY helicopters, spent a combat year there and was more than ready to leave for stateside assignment to Air Training Command in Alabama. In May 1975, I retired from the Air Force, returned to Goldsboro, NC and civilian life. I worked as a GMC truck service manager and as heavy equipment service manager, also was the neighborhood “fixer upper man” (for free)! In 1992, my wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and I took care of her at home until she died in October 2004. We were married 69 wonderful years, I was devastated! During that 12 year period I did not ride a bike. Since my wife’s death, I have owned five different full-sized low mileage bikes. There was one Harley in the group, so I traded it for new 2016 Indian Scout 100, less weight and easier on the “balance.” I am 97 years old and own 2016 Indian Scout and 2007 Yamaha C 1300. My 60-year old daughter and 73-year old son frequently ride with me. I always wear “protective” gear and ride about 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year, often riding 2 to 300 miles a day. I still get that “You are too old for that; you will kill yourself!” HA!! For all you bikers out there “you can too”! KIVETT IVEY, 97 years old, still rides! Born To Ride!

We speak to many drivers each day – motorcyclists and automobile drivers alike – who need a gut check on their situation. Keep in mind that speaking to a lawyer doesn’t mean hiring a lawyer. A reputable lawyer will advise you that you don’t need one if you truly don’t. Adversity is no longer my enemy. It’s my sparring partner, keeping me well trained in the daily battle with life.
As the hot summer days drag on – but wait! I forgot that it is only June! I suppose that the last few unusually hot months may be the harbinger of what is likely to be one of the hottest summers on record. But who keeps these ‘records’ anyhow. I suspect that I am as qualified at meteorology as those folks at NOAA or the people who report the weather on the various news outlets and perhaps because of my refined skills in the area of Climatology, it’s a fair bet that I know what’s going on with my environment. It’s simple. I can walk out the door and tell you how hot it’s going to be, the approximate actual temperature at the moment. I can tell the wind direction and approximate speed, and if my dog is nervous it means that a storm is on the way. We have the luxury of living in Florida. If you don’t particularly like the weather at the moment, just wait a few hours. It will change. Now, if you people will stop setting fire to our state it would be a lot nicer! No negativity here, but when you go out and get on the motorcycle for a nice ride through the country or to an event, there are not many sensations that are more annoying than riding through smoke. Or just smelling it! Rain? Yeah, I like riding in that because I get a free bike wash and if it rains long enough, I don’t have to take a shower or do my laundry!
One day, I got on the bike to go to Georgia. I owned a house up in Marietta and went for a ride to see what was going on with the tenants I had rented it to. The house was located right in the same neighborhood where the world famous “Big Chicken” is located. The chicken and peanuts are pretty much all that the city of Marietta is known for, but for me it was just another nice ride (like I need an excuse) to a destination that not only is my home town and where my last remaining relatives live but a rather relaxing area to visit. It may not be as laid back as the mountain area I wrote about last month, but it’s still a lowkey hustle comparatively. I arrived and found the house abandoned with graffiti and other minor damage. I sold it not too much later after my visit and sometimes regret it, but the sale did allow me to buy a nice late-model FXR which I enjoyed for a long time. I guess sometimes you just like to have more than one motorcycle. For an example, the bagger is great for going on long trips or perhaps grocery shopping, but having a little smaller and lighter bike is cool for going to the local events or perhaps to your favorite tavern or gentlemen’s club. Doesn’t really matter much, and I won’t get into the occasional stop-light drag race issue. I don’t recommend anyone ‘bend’ the law, but fun is fun and every now and then you just gotta have it! I’ve owned a dozen or more Sportsters and bought most of them for my ‘flavor of the month’ significant other. Lightweight, powerful and fast these bikes are always available for a fairly reasonable price. And if I had a dollar for every one of the clutches I have replaced on them – I could buy a dealership! I just can’t use them for a daily ride because I am too overgrown (read ‘fat’) and let’s leave the monkey/football reference out of it. … So. … What are you doing on Tuesday night? Want a date? Every Tuesday I am doing Born To Ride Radio at 8:00 PM and you can see and hear it on www.borntoride.com and other select locations and web-sites. I am often joined by Everywhere Eddie sometimes Lynne and a myriad of special guests who bring interesting, informative and compelling voices and concepts to this great show. We discuss our statewide events, charities, runs and often feature your unique business which offers various services to the biker community. Everyone is welcome to call in and stalkers are encouraged! Until next month, speed safely! CRAVEN

Christian Motorcyclists Association Faith is Being Sure of What we Hope For A while back I had the chance to go to San Diego on business and took the opportunity to rent a bike from a local dealer. I had heard about riding along the coast, as well as hearing about the great mountain roads that were there. I was excited! When we turned off of Hwy 101 and left the ocean side behind, we discovered some great curves and bends in the road. As we headed towards Julian, home of the world- famous apple pies, the road went from being a highway to becoming a two-lane road. As we were cruising along the mountain side we had the face of the mountain on our right side and a huge drop off on the left. From time to time as the road disappeared around the bend in front of us, we could almost reach out and touch the mountainside. When this would happen, I noticed that the road before me vanished around the curve ahead, and way across a huge empty expanse I would see the road re-emerge on the other side of nothing. I had to have total faith that those in front of me would not hit their brakes as I came around the curve. I likewise had to have BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM
faith that nobody in the oncoming traffic would pull into my lane and force me into the side of the mountain. It was a ride that was exhilarating and a little terrifying at the same time! There are times when one is on the road that life for the moment seems totally out of one’s control. It is then that we find faith is more important than talent or ability. It is in those moments that we simply let go and have faith that everything is going to work. Strangely it is in those times of tension that if we just have a little faith we find ourselves in awe of the feelings, and the freedoms, that pour themselves upon us! The Bible says, in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” When we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and our King, we do so by faith. That faith is an incredible hope that we are given by the Holy Spirit, that while we have called on Jesus to be our Master, He has already accepted us as His own. That blessed assurance gives us a powerful certainty of that which we cannot see with our eyes but can with our hearts! When we ask Jesus into our hearts we know, and we know that we know, that He is real, and that He hears our call for Him to be Lord of our lives. When life seems to have a touch of exhilarating terror, just remember to have faith. You can call on Jesus 24/7; He’s always there to hear your call!
