THE ONE WAY STREET
You are riding along in the left lane of a oneway street, with a car ahead of you on your right. As the two of you enter an intersection, the car swerves left across your path to make a turn. Strategy: Because traffic was light, the driver may have forgotten that he was traveling on a one-way street and never looked in his blind spot for you. Since there was no traffic in the oncoming lane, he felt free to make a normal left turn (without signaling), inadvertently trapping you in his path. There was no way, short of watching for the non-existent signal, to predict that this driver was going to turn left. But remembering that intersections are always situations of increased risk, you might have prepared for this by taking actions to separate yourself from the other vehicle. By riding so close (and inside the driver’s blind spot) you effectively hid yourself from the driver’s vision and greatly increased your exposure to danger. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org
Tex McDorman takes us to the 40th Anniversary of the cult classic motion picture Smokey and the Bandit
2017 marks the 40th Anniversary of the cult classic motion picture Smokey and the Bandit. The movie was the second highest grossing film of 1977, second only to Star Wars. Produced with a budget of only $4.3 million, Smokey and the Bandit posted an astounding worldwide gross of more than $300 million. For several years, die-hard Smokey and the Bandit fans have celebrated their beloved movie by putting rubber to the road each year with either the Snowman’s Run or the Bandit Run. During these events, thousands of fans hop in their 1977 Pontiac Trans Am’s or their semi-trucks and hit the road to relive the epic journey depicted in the movie. This year, June 22 – June 24, both the Snowman’s Run and the Bandit Run converged in Jonesboro, Georgia where the movie was filmed for a special 40th Anniversary Celebration. The multi-day event featured a bus tour of filming sites, scene reenactments, a trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway for a car show and trips around the track as well as nightly social gatherings. Jackal’s Gun Talk
Let’s start out this monthly column by me telling you that I HATE MY GUN! Yes. You read that correctly. Hate it, loathe it, despise it … you get the picture. I bought this gun for all the WRONG reasons! I was told that I would love this gun, that it packs easily, and that it would be good stopping power in case it ever had to come to use. My wonderful friends were wrong, wrong, wrong! What if I told you – other than being pestered by my well-intentioned friends – that one of the main reasons I chose this gun is because it’s pink? Yeah. Really. … When Ron Galletti asked me to interview our own Born To Ride Gun Professional, Jackal, I knew that I had to come clean with him on my poor choice of gun purchase. Now, don’t get me wrong; I’ve taken all the classes, had a couple a sweet “attitude adjusters:” North American 22 Long Rifle and a Colt 32 revolver snub nose that I loved but was told when I moved from New York to Florida, I couldn’t take them with me. Starting off this great conversation with Jackal, I asked him what he does to help
people like me who need a little help in purchasing a new gun? “The first question I ask is, ‘Why are you buying a gun?’ If they can’t answer me with a valid, logical answer, I don’t do business with them.” At first I thought that was a little harsh, but the more I talked with Jackal and understood his philosophy and experience, the light went on and I “Got It!” Jackal added, “I have to be absolutely sure that when someone is shopping for a gun, they are shopping for the right one and for the right reasons. Another test I do is ask them to hold the gun as if they were going to shoot it at a target. Most people DO NOT know how to handle a gun let alone hold it correctly and safely. Many do not know how to take apart a gun, clean it, and put it all together either. That’s something else that I can help people with.” Jackal told me a great story of when he was in the service. “We were given a gun to take apart, learning how to do it correctly. Imagine what we were thinking when the parts to these guns were taken and put all on a sheet. That’s when
we had to put it all back together piece by piece. There could be no leftover parts!” Jackal comes to us with a great amount of knowledge, positive attitude, and knowhow. In addition to his time in the service, Jackal has also been a body guard to some of the most influential and wellknown people in the country. “My clients always thought that I had to have the top shelf type of gun. That’s not necessary. Again, it all comes down to what you need it for and why.” Jackal also designs firearms and builds them from scratch. “I have a love for guns and this business. It’s my passion and something I love to do every day.” Every month, Born To Ride will be sharing new stories about Jackal, his reviews on guns, and in a few months, we will be doing a “location story” with Jackal and yours truly! From the first meeting, to the education and training – and finally – the correct purchase of the RIGHT gun for me – you will be a part of this addition to our monthly magazine and website! We are all looking forward to this and hope you will be too! Susan Hurst

Discreet Personal Security … turn your cell phone into a defensive tool! Literally, 95% of all Americans now carry a cell phone with them on a daily basis.* Specifically, 96% of men, 94% of women … and 100% of people ages 18-29 that were surveyed carry a mobile phone! More people carry a cell phone on them regularly than carry a driver’s license or money. It only stands to reason that some out-of-the-box thinking company would eventually figure out a way of turning your cell phone into a defensive weapon. Enter Stinger Solutions, the developer of the Yellow Jacket Stun Gun Phone Case. This is not a stun gun that is designed to look like a cheap “fake phone.” This is a stateof-the-art phone case that protects your phone and you! Why a Phone Case Stun Gun? “So many people now carry a cellular phone with them it only made sense to develop an effective defensive tool working BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM
off of this type platform,” said Thom Buck, Chief Technology Officer of Stinger Solutions. “If you leave your home without your phone, it is one of the few things people will return for before they continue on to their destination. Even if they are leaving for only a few minutes … they are uncomfortable being without their phone,” said Buck. Mr. Buck went on to say, “One of the first requirements for an effective defensive tool is that it should always be with you. It can’t help you if it is not with you when you need it and most people carry their phone everywhere with them.” In fact, the basic premise for a defensive tool is that certain rules need to be followed to increase the chances of you being able to successfully deploy it under stress. Some of those basic rules are as follows: • The device should be reliable and effective. • It should be something you are comfortable carrying.
• It should be discreet so as to not draw undue attention to it. • The tool should not require a great deal of training to deploy. • Your defensive tool should always be either in your hands or close to your hands. • Ideally, the deployment of the device should be intuitive and not require much thought. This Yellow Jacket has a Nasty Sting! The Yellow Jacket Stun Gun Phone Case is a two piece phone case that your mobile phone locks into. Once installed on your phone, it offers several important features. First, it offers superior protection for your phone. The case is made of a space age material that helps to protect your phone from “drops and bumps.” The case comes with a screen protector and wrist leash as well. Second, it acts as a “battery backup,” for your phone! If you depress a small button on the back of the case, it will immediately
If you would like to become a Dealer for Yellow Jacket, Call: 225-304-6933
begin charging your phone. It will provide hours of additional talk and standby time. This feature alone makes it worth attaching to your phone. Third, it helps to protect you! It does this by concealing inside the housing of the unit a 7,000,000+ volt stun gun. Once you turn on the Stun Gun Safety Switch placing the unit is standby mode, all you have to do is slide the Stun Gun Activation Switch forward causing the electrode prongs to extend out of the front of the phone case. When you then use a separate motion and depress the Stun Gun Activation Switch it will discharge a jarring electrical charge! Simply slide the Stun Gun Activation Switch backwards to retract the electrodes back inside the housing and the Stun Gun is deactivated and returned to standby mode.
All of this can be done with the use of just one hand. Perfect for Motorcyclists! Whether you carry your phone in a pocket, phone holster or on a “mount” on your bike … you now have the perfect defensive tool readily at hand when you need it. Whether you are sitting at a red light and have someone uninvited walking up to you or anywhere else you might need a defensive tool … if your phone is with you why not a Yellow Jacket? Take a moment and visit the Yellow Jacket website at www.yellowjacketcase. com to learn more about this unique and innovative product. Buck explained that they are selling a huge number of Yellow Jackets to motorcycle enthusiasts. “The motorcycle riding community likes the fact that in most places you don’t
need a Concealed Weapons License to carry a stun gun and that it has a highperformance backup battery on the device. It seems like every day we are selling dozens of Yellow Jackets to bikers who like a discreet defensive tool they can count on,” Buck shared. As of this date, the Yellow Jacket is only offered in an Apple iPhone configuration. However, Samsung and other phone configurations are in the works and should be out in the coming months. Contact the Yellow Jacket Company if you have any questions about this unique and patented product … and remember – the future of self-defense is in your hands … Yellow Jacket! Spyke & Mike
Hello Bikers, I’m Spyke and he’s Mike
out why they don’t take the easy way and hitch a ride like me! I guess you can say that I’m smarter than the average bird. I bet ya’ll are wondering how I got this way. Since Mike was “Mr. Mom” to me, I just wanted to “hang around” with him and his crazy friends. Doing all the things they did and enjoying all the places they “flew to.” That meant traveling with him any way I could. Well, I can tell you it was not easy at first. Mike started me out on his mountain bike, riding around the yard. That was the beginning of moving faster than a walk for me. It made Mike and me tough in no time. At first, I was really digging my talons into and sometimes through Mike’s t-shirt while he was pumping the pedals like a madman. I guess he was seeing if we both could take it. It did get easier from there when we both graduated to the four-wheeler. This is when Mike wore his leathers and made it more enjoyable for both of us. Then I figured out why biker jackets Hey there fellow Born To Ride readers and biker friends! Take have those leather straps on the shoulders. I call them ‘bird grips’! a second or two and check us out. My name is Spyke and I’m one It didn’t take long to adjust to the noise. It was those darned low crazy blue & gold macaw parrot. It would scare the poop out of me, seeing Mike Mularz and we live in Largo FL. Many people know him as “the Mike ride off and leave me alone in the jungle with all those crazy Birdman.” Although I don’t know why, he looks like any other human birds flying around. He would eventually come back though and wait to me! for me to climb onto the four-wheeler. He would then give me a kiss We get around on his ’96 Fatboy, which happens to be painted and tell me how sorry he was for loosing me. Those episodes did to look just like me! I’ve been hanging onto Mike and his scooter for teach me to pay more attention to what’s coming at me and to hold just over 22 years now. I know I’ve got over 180,000 miles under on to those bird grips no matter what! And for that I’m grateful. my wings, as the bird rides. My Confession as a Female Rider By Liz Sorrell, Motorcycle Law Group
In 2007, after obtaining my motorcycle endorsement, I quit my job as a prosecutor and began a new career at Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. The ride has been better than I had hoped for. As a member of the Motorcycle Law Group, I have had the opportunity to help other motorcyclists in ways that I had not previously considered. I travel throughout Virginia and North Carolina to speak to groups of motorcyclists. Being able to share my knowledge with members of the many motorcycle clubs and organizations throughout
so important to know. I have also bought a different bike. Learning those skills has been great, but they did not make my bike any easier to ride. As a new rider I did not know what I needed in a motorcycle; I do now. Unlike before, I now feel in complete control of my machine. I can stop my bike on a dime, ride in a figure eight, and walk the bike backwards with my head turned without worrying that I will drop it. Now I realize that the right bike is the bike that you are comfortable with. For some ladies that may be a big cruiser. For
the Southeast has been one of the best parts of my job. Instead of sitting at my desk, I get to ride out and meet with people to give them knowledge that they need to prepare themselves and their families in the event they are injured by the reckless actions of another. When I began riding, it was on a bike that was chosen for me by someone else. They were an experienced rider and did their best to select a bike that fit what they thought I needed. It did not take long for me to realize, despite the best intentions, it was not the right motorcycle for me. The baby apes looked cool, but they weren’t functional because I could barely reach the clutch. The same was true for the forward controls, which were designed for a person with longer legs than mine. The seat was too wide, the brakes were stiff; I could go on and on. As cool as that 1998 Harley-Davidson Springer may have looked, it was not the right bike for me. Why do so many of us ladies end up on motorcycles that are not right for us? Too often we let someone close to us tell us what is right for us. If you have never made that mistake, good for you. I did. Thank God for all of the kind motorcyclists who came to my aid back then, otherwise I would still be sitting on the pavement at one of the numerous stoplights where I dropped my bike. I have since attended many garage nights. I have learned how how to lift a down motorcycle, change my own oil and countless other skills that are
others, it may be a smaller, more agile sport bike. The point is that the right bike is the bike that allows you to enjoy your ride. My motorcycle and I cover a lot more territory than I used to, and it is truly a blessing I take a special pride in, especially seeing my other sisters on the road. Ladies, there are a lot of us out there who are not content to simply be a passenger. We want the throttle in our hands. Purchase a bike that allows you to enjoy your ride! Another Hot Summer and a Few Good Reasons to Celebrate
It’s another sweltering summer and as I have written before, it appears that there is no end in sight. But if you just wait for a little while, the weather will change whether you like it or not. Usually there is no pleasure in the asphalt melting heat but at least we don’t have to deal with riding in the snow. I often wonder how our brothers and sisters up north deal with that experience, and I can only recall doing it once or twice in my entire career on a motorcycle. And the ice ain’t nice either. But it is what it is and we should all be happy that we live in paradise (Florida) and I would rather go three rounds with rain and two rounds with sugar-sand than sing that old song “Slip Sliding Away”. … Are my articles starting to sound redundant? Perhaps it’s because I have so little to write about and too much time to think about it! I remember that last year, I did remind everyone about the 4th of July holiday, but it seems that I should reiterate that the celebration of our independence from tyranny is something more than just burgers and hot dogs on the grill. Now, I have been accused of being old but I can assure you that I wasn’t around when this particular document was signed. I also admit that I have fired up the grill and cooked burgers, dogs and sometimes steaks while swilling my share of cold beers. That’s what everyone does on this
particular holiday and I hope you are able to read this by the 4th. I never know, but I usually deliver this thing (BTR magazine) by that day so and sometimes I never know whether I am going to be working when a holiday falls around the first of the month. I like my job and I suppose I’m not really qualified to do much of anything else so there’s no complaint here. Besides, y’all aren’t interested in hearing my bitching anyhow. So this month, I will have to re-schedule my routes so that I can be back at the radio station to do the Born To Ride Radio Show at 8:00 PM on - guess what day?? Tuesday July the 4th. Funny how all this happens but I am not in control of chronological events, such as the ones that have something to do with creating calendars, schedules and other things that require specific timing. I’m more of the free-spirit kinda guy who tries to be on time, remember events and actually show up (late or not) and do whatever task it is that I am supposed to do. I think that I am conscientious enough to get it all done - and believe me I try, but it’s all in a blur of activity in my life and sometimes things get shuffled around somewhat. One thing that doesn’t get shuffled around is my birthday. It’s right in the middle of July and I usually celebrate it about the same way that I do the 4th. Not that my life is mundane it’s just routine. Seriously - I don’t mind getting older - especially when I consider the alternative. I don’t expect any celebration or gifts and such because every day that I wake up above ground is a celebration in itself. Besides, age is just a number and I still feel like I’m 30 or so. I try not to worry too much. I think that has kept me feeling fairly young. Enough about me, what are you people up to? I like to hear from our listeners on the radio show and value your input regardless of the content. Ok - well sometimes we like to not go too far over the edge with controversial topics - but it is pretty much open to anything as long it is not too far out there and too far off base. I also want to take a minute to thank Everywhere Eddie and Lynne for becoming an invaluable part of the show. Their participation and input have made it a very entertaining and informational program that is unique in many ways. Do yourself a favor and call in on Tuesday evenings from 8 to 11 PM and join in on the fun. The studio line is 813-756-6444 and we would really love to hear from YOU!

Biker Movie Review
This month Born To Ride reviews the classic “On Any Sunday.” On Any Sunday is not a typical motorcycle exploitation film, but on the contrary a very positive motorcycle ‘sport’ documentary piece featuring Steve McQueen, Mert Lawwill, Malcolm Smith, and a cast of hundreds of other motorcycle racers and enthusiasts. This 1971 expose was produced by Bruce Brown, and Steve McQueen, and features some very good cinematography considering it’s vintage. It also portrays motorcycle enthusiasts as ‘good guys’ instead of the alternative.
The opening scene shows a group of kids racing their bicycles, making motorcycle noises. Some credit this scene with the ‘creation’ of BMX, but I looked at it as a positive thing for the motorcycle community, as we watch our kids aspire to be like us as they grow older. This film leaves no stone unturned in the motorcycle racing world, covering everything from road racing to the “Widow Maker” hill climb. A good portion of the movie focuses on the career of Mert Lawwill who held the AMA number one plate for one grueling season, riding his Harley XR 750 in the flat track series. The film follows Mert through one of his bad years where multiple engine failures and other calamities cause him to lose the coveted number 1 plate to Gene Romero at the season finale in Sacramento. Mert didn’t just flat track it all the way through the film however. He and his costars, Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen are filmed in various situations in multiple divisions of motorcycle racing. Most know McQueen as an actor who would spend a lot of leisure time as an auto racer, but On Any Sunday will show you that he is a very accomplished motorcycle racer as well. On Any Sunday is often credited as the best and/or most important motorcycle documentary ever made. Roger Ebert says “It does for motorcycle racing what The Endless Summer did for surfing.” I agree with Ebert on this (for once we agree) but don’t forget that Bruce Brown produced both of these films, so that quote is more of an insult than a compliment in my opinion. On Any Sunday is available on a digitally re-mastered DVD and the “Directors Cut” edition comes with yet a second DVD which covers the making of the movie behind the scenes, the trailer, interviews and et cetera. This flick runs 96 minutes, and you will likely enjoy at least 90 of them! If you love motorcycles and racing, you will like this film! I’ll give this one 5 out of 5 stars for keeping me entertained without pissing me off!

Kristen Renton from Sons of Anarchy & Nation’s Fire with her Dad
Christian Motorcyclists Association
Several friends are taking cross country trips on their bikes and it got me thinking about all that happens before they are ready to leave. A while back my wife and I took a nineday trip around Florida, and learned that even a full-size dresser only has so much space for luggage. We were going to a biker rally, to visit with family, and to attend a business conference, all on the same trip. Just deciding on clothing was a challenge, such as how much of and what kind of clothes, and what we could wash along the way, to help minimize the volume of luggage we would need. We had to start this trip with a lot of planning, like mapping the route we would take, where we would stay along the way, and getting the bike serviced prior to the trip. It took time to just sit and think about what we wanted to do on this trip, and how best to accomplish getting everything done. In the past we would just throw a few things together and take off, this trip demanded more planning and attention. With good planning and organizing in advance, we were more likely to overcome challenges or difficulties. In our planning, we remember to include God, as He is always BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM
available, whenever we seek Him in prayer. When making our plans, we have the blessing of having access to the Father through prayer, and we should take advantage of the same. Time after time in the Bible, Jesus is seen going to the Father for guidance. He would slip away and spend time in the presence of God, through prayer. Perhaps this helps us understand how Jesus was so able, in the midst of challenges and confrontation, to keep His cool and not be tempted to lash out in anger, and sin. In Matthew 26:41 the Bible tells us to “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Jesus lived out that verse, and is an example we should follow. The fact is that the more time one spends in prayer, in the presence of the Lord, the more we hear His voice and learn to hide His Word, and His thoughts, in our hearts. That way when a temptation comes our way, we don’t have to think about what to do; we know what He would have us to do. On a number of occasions I have faced a challenging situation, where tempers were escalating, and rather than react aggressively, His Word led me to respond in peace and gentleness. That was not a “me” thing, it went against my automatic response. It was a wonderful gift from a loving Father. If you will spend time in His presence, He will meet your need, and direct you, when problems arise. He is always there for those who have trusted in Jesus, you simply need to call upon Him.
