Great American Biker Bash at Copperhead Lodge, Fri, Sat & Sun July 13th, 14th & 15th
Not having sufficient safety margins invites risk. Riding at any speed requires an adequate space cushion to brake and/ or swerve. You must have time and space to maneuver. Avoid target fixation so you do not crash into what you are staring at. Instead, look for your escape-path options. You want to have an escape path that is open and allows you to avoid a collision. An escape path can be in front of you, to the right, or to the left. Escape paths can be within your lane, in the next lane over, on a shoulder or median, or even off the
Escape Paths
road if conditions permit. It is best to have more than one escape path open so you don’t get trapped. If your escape path requires a hard
swerve, be sure to separate the swerve from any braking. Keep in mind a motorcycle does not need the same width as a car.

There is assistance available when someone you know and love has had a traumatic brain injury resulting from a fall, an accident, or physical assault. People who have had an accident may not know what to do or what options they may have in order to treat these issues. Educating the public is very important when it comes to understanding Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Aphasia. BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM
In this month’s cover story, we are going to introduce you to Stephanie Karidas, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. Stephanie is an accomplished speech-language therapist, sailboat racing competitor, and Harleyloving rider! Stephanie knows just too well what consequences a head injury can have. Stephanie helps those riders and others who suffered a brain injury to rehabilitate their communication
and cognitive (thinking) skills. She has met many different clients throughout her career as a speech-language pathologist and has seen the positive long-term benefits of early, but also late intervention. Brain injuries can impact an individual’s ability to think, speak, write, read and drastically impact someone’s quality of life. But not everybody knows what to do after a head injury or stroke.
Only a few know how many resources can be utilized to rehabilitate from an acquired brain injury - and this is why we are introducing Doc Steph to you in this month’s cover story! Stephanie is easily approachable when it comes to helping folks who need help. My conversation with her was fun, enlightening, and educational. Tell us a little bit more about yourself, your life, and your family! “I grew up in Germany. My family is pretty big, and they have been my major support throughout my life. I left Germany in 2007 after I graduated university to continue my studies at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. I graduated with my second Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders and actually planned on moving up North to pursue a career in Speech Pathology. But, I met my husband about a year before my graduation and decided to stay.” Tell me about your husband! “Nate and I met at the Davis Island Yacht Club through racing sailboats competitively. We traveled together from one regatta to the next. Nate also introduced me to motorcycles!” “One day I decided it was time for me to get my own license – after all, riding on the back is only half the fun! At that time, my husband was working on oil rigs in Louisiana and when he came back from one of his trips, I proudly showed him my new ‘two-wheel-independence’ license! We are both very responsible and careful riders and before I rode on the streets, I asked him to continue practicing riding with me, riding in large parking lots. I learned a lot from my riding class but didn’t feel accomplished enough to face the heavy traffic out there. I think it was about two weeks of daily routine activities, such as practicing turns, sudden stops, figure eights, anything you could think of, where I finally felt more comfortable to face the heavy traffic. We started riding on the road and I actually rode his Honda Fury for a pretty long time until I got my own bike, a Sportster 48, 1200cc. She is a pretty one and she can certainly hang with the big boys! I take her to different events, but when it comes to long rides, I still hop on my husband’s Road Glide and just enjoy the ride with him.” What are signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)? “There are many signs and symptoms that can occur, such as emotional and behavioral changes, cognitive complications which present as problems with memory, learning, making decisions, problem-solving, concentration/attention, reading, and writing, but also speech and language impairments. Aphasia is a language disorder that can occur after a stroke but also through a TBI.” What is your mission as a therapist? “My mission is to provide language, speech, and cognitive treatment for individuals suffering from TBI and/or Aphasia. I provide individual sessions, which are offered as standard sessions of about two hours per week or as an intensive package (five or more hours per week). I am an Aphasia and TBI advocate – I want to spread the knowledge! Many people do not know about acquired communication disorders such as Aphasia. The term ‘Aphasia’ is often unknown! TBI is very common and obviously more of a general known medical term than Aphasia. But do you really know what it means to suffer from a TBI on a daily basis? Do you know how the life of a loved one changes after an accident and/or a BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 11
stroke? And do we know what resources to utilize after a brain injury? The results of a communication and/or cognitive disorder can have major impacts on an individual’s social life, their families, and friends. It can cause social isolation, depression, and emotional distress. Simple tasks that we take for granted are often impaired, such as speaking and understanding, maintaining attention, solving problems, remembering events, names, appointments, organizing and following a daily routine, and interacting socially. But, there is so much more help out there than one might imagine! And that is where I come into play – I support and rehabilitate individuals with TBIs and Aphasia. I teach compensatory strategies for impaired skills, I strengthen skills that remained intact. I consult with the individual’s families and train them how to make adjustments to these immense changes. My goal is to improve and maintain the quality of life after a traumatic incident or stroke through therapy. I urge everyone to think about loved ones in their family or circle of friends who have suffered a brain injury or stroke that may need help. The sooner we start the rehabilitation process, the better the outcomes!” What are the options for people suffering from a TBI and/or Aphasia? As a Speech-Language Therapist, I provide individual, client-centered therapy that is based on the client’s personal needs and skills. I focus very strongly on functional therapy outcomes to improve the client’s everyday life to help provide a better quality of
life. Life changes drastically after experiencing Aphasia and/or TBI, and it is my mission to deliver the most effective treatment to you and consult with your family.” Stephanie, you mentioned that you also volunteer at a nonprofit organization in St. Petersburg! Tell us about that! “Yes, I am volunteering and working for Voices of Hope for Aphasia (VOHA) in St. Petersburg. VOHA was established in 2012 by Mike and Kathy Caputo. Mike suffered from a stroke at the age of 51 years which resulted in Aphasia. Until then, Mike was living a normal life with his family in New Jersey. He was a director and International leader for a large company. His life changed after his stroke; he had to learn how to live with Aphasia. Mike and his wife decided to form an organization to help others with Aphasia. VOHA is a communitybased aphasia program for people living with aphasia and their families. They offer several programs, such as a 2-day Workshop, which is designed to educate people with aphasia and their families about different communication strategies and resources available. VOHA also offers group meetings for people with aphasia where members get together to talk about current events, do different and fun activities, discuss interesting topics, and many more things. At these meetings, therapist like myself, lead the groups to provide skilled support for members with Aphasia. These meetings are fun and get people with Aphasia (and other neurogenic disorders) involved in different activities. They are able to socialize with others

who are also experiencing a communication disorder and are just ‘getting back to life’ as we say at VOHA. VOHA also offers many more program options which you can access on their website www. vohaphasia.org. I have been with this organization for many years, they are like family to me, and I highly recommend them! You will

What would you like everyone to take away from your story? “Know that therapy is vital during your recovery process. Seek my professional help. greatly benefit from joining the many programs offered by VOHA, and I promise that you will meet the most amazing people who will eventually all become your friends.” One particularly successful story is when Stephanie worked closely with a young teenager who was in a serious car accident and suffered from a severe TBI about two years ago. He is the son of dear, good friends who also ride motorcycles with Stephanie and Nate. Their son was in a long coma and the doctor’s initial prognosis was devastating to his family and friends. But, against all odds, he started progressing and finally came home! Stephanie explained, “I spent 7-9 hours a week with him for about 8 months. I worked with him on metacognitive skills (identifying errors, reflecting on his own performance, applying used strategies independently, etc.), attention, memory, problem solving, reading and language comprehension. Once it was time for him to go back to school, I had meetings with the school officials and therapists to make sure everything was set up correctly for him and his needs (in my area of expertise). I’m still working with him this summer, a few hours a week. He is a fantastic kid who has a great amount of outstanding support and truly unconditional love from his family. His accident was a terrible experience for his family and friends, but he is blessed with very strong and amazing parents who did absolutely everything right and possible during his recovery process.” Let’s say someone got into a motorcycle accident and a TBI has occurred whereby it has affected speech, language, and cognitive skills. What is the process of getting them the help they may need? “I get involved when he or she is released from the hospital (out-patient rehabilitation) and speech, language and/or cognition skills need to be rehabilitated. The first six months of recovery is an important part of the recovery process; individuals usually notice fast improvements during this spontaneous recovery phase. It is very important to know and understand that progress still occurs after this speedy recovery phase. Recovery can occur even after two Who: Stephanie Karidas, Ph.D., CCC-SLP years post-injury. Women’s World Dream Chasing through Belief, Power, and Freedom
While Janette Thornley was working at T. Rowe Price Investments her boss turned fifty and bought a motorcycle. Seeing his motorcycle and hearing his stories of riding brought back memories of her dad. When Janette was only six years old her dad and brother died from an accident with a drunk driver. Remembering the passion her dad had for bikes gave Janette the idea to learn to ride. She took the driver safety class, got her license, and bought a bike. Always having a desire to help and guide others, Janette soon took a part-time job teaching the motorcycle safety class. This allowed her to share her passion of riding with others and the flexible part-time schedule worked well with her day job. Besides, one weekend a month of teaching took care of her motorcycle payment! “Some Fridays I dreaded going to this second job after working all week,” Janette admitted. “But by Sunday there was no place I’d rather be! I loved helping others realize their dream of riding!” Teaching part-time allowed her to meet folks from Harley-Davidson. They encouraged her to apply for a lead instructor position. She got the job and in what some thought was a risky career move, she moved to work for Harley-Davidson BTRto26Wisconsin | BORNTORIDE.COM and help launch the Rider’s Edge Classes. Their team of MSF certified lead instructors BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM
received further training from H-D and rolled out the program across the country. While traveling around the country for business, a dealer named Ray invited Janette to come out and watch his race team. She didn’t know anything about motorcycle drag racing but watched and began following the team. It wasn’t long before Janette wanted to be out on the track drag racing, too! Drag racing doesn’t correlate to riding a street bike on the highway as in racing you do many things that you try to avoid on the road. For example, with the bike revved up so high, you actually want to pop the clutch. If you even have one! While gas bikes still have a clutch, the nitro-burning motorcycle Janette races doesn’t even have a clutch! Although drag racing on a motorcycle sounds dangerous to most people it didn’t seem that way to Janette. On a track there’s no traffic, no intersections and no fear of animals running in front of you. She also wears a ballistic vest when racing. Janette is now an award-winning professional motorcycle drag racer and one of only two females in the country licensed to pilot a nitro-burning motorcycle. Janette was voted female racer of the year by Horse Power & Heels; voted 2017 Lady Racer of the Year by the American Motorcycle
Racing Association and is the NHRA Pro Fuel MPH Record Holder. Her experience with Harley-Davidson and publicity around her status as an award-winning drag racer has lead to many speaking engagements. Janette inspires and motivates audiences with her story of overcoming life challenges and lessons she learned in racing. She talks about the importance of Belief, Power, and Freedom. In addition to having the Dream Chaser Racing Team, Janette is a certified coach, leadership trainer and co-host of Heels on Wheels Radio show, a weekly one-hour show focusing on women in motorsports. You can find a full bio and information on her programs at JanetteThornley.com and see a list of her awards and career highlights at DreamChaserRacin.com as well as a list of her current goals. Janette continues chasing her dreams as she coaches and encourages other women to chase theirs!

MotoAmerica at Road America
Legions of race fans descended upon Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin June 1-3, for round 4 of the MotoAmerica road racing series. After a month-long sabbatical, riders and teams were eager to get back on the track and on the throttle. Reigning Superbike 1000 champ Toni Elias led in the points after the first three race rounds, but the challengers to his throne came stoked for battle. In Supersport 600 Valentin Debise returned to compete, his first race weekend since a horrific crash at Daytona back in March. Junior Cup saw a full grid of 25 young riders, hungry to fight for racing glory. Born To Ride sent me to Wisconsin to report on this near mid-season round, and I was all too eager to oblige. Road America is an old, legendary track, and is the longest single track in the country–just over 4 miles in length. Located in beautiful Elkhart Lake, a bit over an hour due north of Milwaukee, Road America is laid amidst over 600 acres of rolling hills, with densely wooded sections and wide-open fields. Views are spectacular all around the course. Friday was spent on practice runs and qualifying sessions, so I roamed the paddock, chatting up riders and MotoAmerica personnel, and snapping photos. Speaking
of photos, I met several Road America staff photographers, and one in particular, Ryan Nolan (Rhynofoto), whose action shots are featured here, helped me discover some of the best locations around the track. Saturday began under cloudy skies and chilly temps, but I was afforded a great honor by the MotoAmerica staff. With race chaplain Raymond Rizzo off working a flat track event, I was invited to bring the invocation prayer at the opening ceremonies both days. I appreciated the trust they put in me to represent MotoAmerica in that role. When the racing began, I was off chasing photo ops around the course. The property was packed with fans, and tents, RVs, and trailers parked everywhere. Reminded me of the race weekends back in the 70s and 80s, when the sport was booming. I sense a comeback is in the air. ... A photo press vest I’d been issued gave me incredible trackside access. Some tight corners I felt close enough to almost reach out and tap rider helmets as they dragged knees and elbows through turns. Back up on the front straight that runs by the tower and grandstands, I asked a MotoAm official how close to the track I could get for some shots. He wryly smiled, bid me follow him, and
Born To Ride Magazine, Real Editorial Content, Real Value for you the Reader.
took me right up beside the track, separated by only a concrete barrier. With bikes in the Twins class flying by at over 150mph, he turned to me and asked with a grin, “Close enough for you?” I could feel the wind and roar pounding in my chest, literally feet from the action. That was an adrenaline rush I’ll not soon forget. The race action in all classes was dramatic. Down in Turn 5 with Ryan and RA staffer Elliott, a rider low-sided right in front of us, sparks and parts flying, and slid out into the gravel runout, taking two other riders with him. Turns out, that was a frequent mishap corner, as I would witness a couple more before the races were completed. With huge Jumbotrons at numerous points around the track, the race action was visible to all, and BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 31
announcers kept fans appraised of developments. In Superbike, reigning champ Elias had a rough weekend, wiping out in race 1 on the last lap after a dramatic, at times physical, battle with Cameron Beaubier and Josh Herrin, then struggling to finish 4th on Sunday. Beaubier, however, the 2015-2016 champion, snatched the top of the podium both days, his first wins of the season. JD Beach and Valentin Debise battled all weekend in Supersport, swapping the podium summit both days. I think my favorites were the Liqui Moly Junior Cup races, as these youngsters throw caution to the wind and just ride like maniacs. Look up all the race highlights both days on social media and the YouTube channels of BeIN Sports and MotoAmerica. Insane racing! The remaining races take place at other legendary tracks, such as Laguna Seca, Sonoma, and Barber. Born To Ride will continue to report on all the race action, and of course, all races are broadcast live and uninterrupted on BeIN Sports Network, then archived in entirety on their respective YouTube channels. If you’re not into MotoAmerica road racing yet, you are missing out on dramatic action, adrenaline pumping speed, and all-American competition. It doesn’t get any more thrilling than this. Milwaukee’s House of Harley The Harley-Davidson Museum
Milwaukee is famous for great beer, great cheese, and the great American motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson. On a recent visit to Wisconsin to report on the MotoAmerica races at Road America, I had the opportunity to sample each. The official Harley-Davidson Museum is located downtown, so I stopped into nose around. What I got was an incredible walk through Harley history, beyond all my expectations. Pulling into the parking lot, one of the first sights to greet me was an exact replica of the original shed that the company operated in. The complex is made up of several buildings—a conference/ convention center, The Shop gift store and MOTOR restaurant, and the two-story Museum, which also houses some company offices. After a delicious lunch in the Harley-Davidson MOTOR Bar & Restaurant (which was fantastic and reasonably priced), I snapped a few photos of the impressive museum exterior and the famous “Hill Climber” statue out on the Founders Terrace. The statue stands over 16 feet tall and weighs over 5000 lbs. Upon entering the Museum, I was greeted by a massive floorto-ceiling reproduction of the H-D “Daytona Grand Slam Win” promotional, with the #4 plate 1952 KRTT Road Racer featured in the mural. The welcoming staff checked me in, gave me some tips on navigating the museum, then turned me loose. Tours can either be conducted by knowledgeable tour guides for bigger groups or can be self-guided with headphones. The tour begins on the second floor, with a hallway full of early Harleys, most are quite rare. The company execs decided by the 1910s to pull aside and store a pristine example of every model they produced every year, so there are bikes on display at the museum that are found nowhere else in the world. Off the main entrance hall are display rooms containing motorcycles, accessories, and information about each decade of Harley-Davidson. I was fascinated by the various engine configurations H-D experimented with over the years, from small BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM
single thumpers to horizontally-opposed airhead twins reminiscent of BMWs, and various iterations of their venerable V-Twin. By the 1960s-70s, Harley delved into snowmobiles, minibikes, golf carts and even inboard/outboard boat motors! The company has never been afraid to experiment and innovate, never been timid about trying and occasionally failing. And the museum holds examples of them all- runaway successes, and abject failures. That boldness and curiosity have always powered the company and clearly propels them into the future. I enjoyed another room, called “The Engine Room” which features examples of every major motor H-D developed over the years. Nearby was the Tank Wall, displaying every tank logo and paint scheme the motor company produced across the decades. Many versions of their logo, beyond the classic “bar & shield” so often associated with Harley. The main floor contains examples of Harley models across the 1980s, 90s, and into the new millennium, with everything from outrageous customs, movie bikes, police and public service machines, and of course, racers. Harley-Davidson has always embraced its racing DNA and being a race fan myself, I found their road racers, flat trackers, hill climbers, and hare scramblers completely fascinating. The museum even features several models of the Buell years, which I believe was a fruitful period for both enterprises. The tour concludes in a room with a long company timeline that can be perused down either side, with modern and historic bikes on the floor that can be “tried on for size.” Be sure to sign the guestbook, and then thumb through the pages. I found names and notes from across the US and the hemisphere, and even across the globe. A worldwide recognized brand, no doubt. win her heart. The next morning he dupes a local dealer into selling him a Kawasaki dirt bike. He hands the dealer an envelope with a five-dollar bill and an I.O.U. while he “test rides” the bike. Thirty seconds later he leaves the rear of the shop with the dirt bike tied to his sissy bar. The next Sunday, he enters the motor cross and on the last lap, he crashes out while running third. CC picks up the bike and carries it across the finish line to the delight of his fellow gang members and the crowd. Moon at this point says he’s disgusted with all the racing crap and some of the members leave with him. The Kawasaki factory rep is impressed with CC’s riding skills, and loans him a bike for the next race. At the end of the day he wins $600.00 and returns to the Head’s camp. CC gives money hungry Moon $500.00 and says he’s keeping a hundred for himself. As usual, a fight ensues and Moon takes the money from CC while he is recovering. Moon gives the money to his girl, and later that night she once again tries to get with CC. While he is kissing her, he takes all the money out of her pocket and he leaves the next day to find Ann. Craven Moorehead It’s Summertime Again
So summer started in May evidently. Daily rain and high temperatures have made their way into the area and Hurricane season started a week early. Can’t complain too much I suppose - at least it isn’t snowing. It seems that lately, all I write about is the weather. It could be said that my life has become mundane and boring. If you observed that and thought the same thing then I guess we were both thinking alike. I remember back in the day when every moment was an adventure. Not so much anymore. Time is passed looking out the window at the rain coming down and listening to the dogs snoring. Yeah, I know you wouldn’t think that dogs snore and perhaps most don’t but for some reason mine do. I suspect that they learned that bad habit from me. They have picked up other bad habits as well but as boring as my life is lately I shouldn’t keep talking about it here and causing you, my dedicated readers to fall asleep while reading this article. I recently was advised that I have to move from where I have been living. This is a serious problem. I am used to having BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM
a variety of non-specific problems and other unpleasant situations, but so far, I have been fortunate enough to have a place to live. Well, not so much now, but somehow, I will find a way to survive. Seems harder this time but I will get over it one way or another. Stuff is expensive nowadays. It didn’t seem to be this bad a few years back. I do remember when a gallon of gas was more expensive, but I have never seen housing go to this limit. Even the grocery store kicks your butt every time you go in. It must be the economy that allegedly is better than ever or perhaps it is due to the unemployment rate that is lower than ever (according to the regulated media) but from where I sit, I can’t tell. If there is light at the end of the tunnel I can’t see to see it, or it is very dim. Not sure which at this point. So as we go through life with hopes and dreams of peace and prosperity, we still must accept the ups and downs and try to survive to the best of our ability. All I can advise is that we all keep keeping on and don’t let life drag us down. So no more bad stuff! I keep a positive attitude and continue to pray for better days. How does everyone else do it? I’m no expert but I suspect that most of you do the same thing. Being negative never produces a positive result. I like to get feedback from my readers and good or bad I take all your comments to heart. Born To Ride has been here for years serving the biker community in every way possible. Your opinions and comments are always welcome and appreciated. I sincerely hope that each and every one of you has a fantastic summer season and that the rain stays away from your ride to wherever it is you are going. CRAVEN

I love Born To Ride magazine and Ron Galletti! They know how to publish a biker magazine for all motorcycles and I stand behind them 100%! We get responses from the ads and features they have created for us, it’s bringing new faces into my dealership for sure and its helped my business grow. Let Ron come up with a plan for your business like he did for me. You wont be sorry. Ricky Patterson, FreeWheeling Powersports Honda and Triumph dealer, Douglasville, GA
Christian Motorcyclists Association I Used to Write Important Things on the Palm of my Hand
Fortunately, there is One who will never forget our names due to His love for us, and His name is God. In Isaiah 49:1516 (NLT), God said, “I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.” I remember as a kid I used to write important things on the palm of my hand, but when I washed my hands, the information faded from memory. We may meet a new friend in the biker community, but all too often the new friend’s name slips from our mind and we can’t recall the name. Isn’t it great that many of us wear patches on our vests that have our names on them, and we can be reminded of the person’s name? The patches help us overcome the human frailty of a bad memory. A better question to ask is how amazing it is that God, in the midst of everything, remembers each of our names, without fail! Once we give our hearts, and our trust, to the Lord Jesus, our name will never be forgotten. Our name is written in the book of those who have called upon Jesus to be their Savior and Master and have asked Him to forgive us for our sins. Even though we fail in our memory as humans, God will never fail in His memory of us as His children. Greater still is that one day we will stand to be judged for all that we have done. God will remember that we have given our hearts to Jesus. Trust Him today! In The Wind, Denny Dingler Check out BornToRide.com for more articles from Christian Motorcyclists Association
One of the cool things I have noticed in the biker world is the use of monikers or biker handles. Some tags are funny, some are serious, and some just describe a personality type or trait. An alternative use of these names is to brand a biker with an exact opposite descriptor of what that person is really like, i.e. a large rider might be given the moniker of Tiny or Little. One thing that has caught me by surprise is realizing that while I know a person’s moniker, I may have no idea what his or her birth name may be. That can lead to confusion, but fortunately, the names are generally not used by several people in a small group. One problem several of us have, especially as we age, is the inability to remember peoples’ names. It has gotten so bad that there are specialty patches available for our vests. I have a patch on my vest that says, “I’m sorry, I can’t remember your name either!” It isn’t that we want to forget our friends’ names; it’s just that many of our minds are not as sharp as they once were, and we forget the names of our acquaintances. Usually, we may laugh it off, but there is a very real potential of offending a friend or making them feel uncared for because we can’t recall their name. BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
