The decision whether to brake first or swerve first in an emergency is critical. You need excellent Search skills so you can effectively Evaluate and use your escape options. Keep in mind an escape option can change quickly if the hazard is moving. For example, a car pulling out in front of you could continue in it’s path or it could stop right in front of you. If you brake without enough distance to stop, you would crash at a reduced speed. If you swerve without slowing and do not have enough space to avoid the hazard, you would crash at your original speed. Here are examples that require a quick decision and action. When going straight: A car backs out of a driveway. Would you brake and swerve? Would you do the same for a child chasing a ball into the street? When in a curve: You

The Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Archive Collection

W

e have all heard the ragsto-riches history of one of the most revered motorcycle marques in the world, Harley-Davidson. We’ve heard the story of three Davidsons and a Harley starting the company in a backyard shed and building three vehicles back in 1903. Much of the early history of the company is the subject of conjecture and speculation, but some things we know for sure. In 1903, there were more than 150 domestic motorcycle manufacturers in the United States, 7 of which were located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the same city in which Harley and the Davidsons began BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM

1903 Serial Number One building motorcycles. As with most industries in their infancy, the majority of these motorcycle companies were short lived, either due to undercapitalization or to an inability to develop a distribution network and market, and then consistently serve that market. Harley-Davidson had sufficient capital and was able to develop an outstanding distribution network and market. By 1920, Harley-Davidson had become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, and by 1953, there were just two American motorcycle manufacturers left standing: Harley-Davidson and Indian, based in Springfield, Massachusetts. That same year Indian closed its doors. Today, Harley-

Davidson corporate offices occupy the same buildings that used to house the original factory, which are just a stone’s throw away from the location of the original shed. From the very beginning, all things Harley-Davidson came from Milwaukee. By 1973, when vehicle manufacturing moved to York, Pennsylvania, more than 1.25 million motorcycles had been built and shipped from this site. The Juneau Avenue complex, as it is now called, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Housed in the 3800 Building is the Harley-Davidson Archives, a 3,100-squarefoot area containing the company history in the form of historic corporate documents,

literature dating back to 1905, service manuals, owner manuals, tens of thousands of images and photographic negatives, point-of-sale and advertising materials, dealer correspondence, rider apparel, and all manner of Harley-Davidson collectibles. This collection creates a rare historic timeline, preserved from the very early years of the company. A separate space houses the vehicle collection, and above the padlocked gate, a sign reads: “Through this gate pass the oldest and greatest motorcycles in the world!” That’s what this book is all about: the Harley-Davidson vehicle collection. It’s the first comprehensive look into the only collection of its kind in the world. Many have speculated over the years about why the vehicle collection was started, a question for which there is no concert explanation. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that it does exist, and includes more than 450 vehicles. The core of the collection consists of vehicles from 1915—the year the collection was started—to the present. Most of these vehicles were taken directly from the production line and, in some instances, may have been engineering prototypes or test units. Vehicles from 1914 back to 1905 were actually re-purchased, either from owners or dealers in the field. To this day, at least one vehicle from each model year takes its place within the collection. There are special-interest vehicles, as well as a Harley-Davidson boat, snowmobiles, golf cars, police vehicles, and prototype models that never saw their way to production. There are special, one-off customs used for advertising or dealer point of sale. No other motor vehicle manufacturer had the foresight to save what Harley-Davidson has saved for more than 100 years. The archival artifacts chronicle more than just Harley-Davidson history; they represent the evolution of technology, styling, advertising, and product development. Most important, however, is that the collections reflect the lives of those who built, sold, and rode a true American Legend. To dealers and riders of yesterday as well as today, thank you for keeping the Legend alive. This book is the first in-depth look inside the Corporate Archives, and yet it embodies a mere fraction of the extensive collections housed at the museum site. So we sincerely hope that this presentation whets your appetite for a trip to Milwaukee in the not-too-distant future as you come to realize that the company founders had it right all the time—Milwaukee is the place to be. Publisher’s Note “Motorbooks and Harley-Davidson hit a home run with this book; it’s a must have for all enthusiasts.” This book celebrates the American company who shaped motorcycle history … HarleyDavidson. Over 200 motorcycles from the archive

collection are inside this book! You will drool over the photos (600 plus) as you witness the beauty and style of these history making machines. We’ve just scratched the surface with this extended review, wait until you see all the gems in this book’s collection! To sum it up I would say “unparalleled.” I can’t wait for the trip to Milwaukee to witness this firsthand because that’s where these gems are showcased, at the new Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. Visit www.harley-davidson.com to learn more about the museum. “In closing I’d like to say you just don’t buy a Harley-Davidson to save on gas. You get one for the lifestyle and the freedom riding one provides. It’s life on the highway like never before. You know gas was $2.75 and lunch was $10 today: but having the opportunity to publish this extended book review … priceless!” Ron Galletti

My Brother’s Keeper

To be sure, there are some elements within motorcycling that refuse to acknowledge or come to the aid of fellow riders. Adherents of certain brands, certain types of bikes, and certain club riders look down upon any not like them and refuse to assist those not of their ilk. And yet, they are a minuscule percentage of the motorcycling world, a fringe not representative of the vast majority of us. Overall, across the years and miles, I have found members of the motorcycling community to be among the most caring, helpful, and selfless people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. And I’m proud to be counted among them. A couple of years ago, while on a long, multi-day road trip, a friend of mine found himself on a highway shoulder, sidelined by a large screw in his rear tire. While trying to remove the invader so he could insert a plug from a tire repair kit he (wisely) carried, he suddenly found himself surrounded by a group of patched club bikers, who had pulled over and parked in front, behind, and even street side around him. “Oh crap,” he thought to himself, being on a metric cruiser, and traveling alone. His concerns were quickly Recently I was riding back through middle Georgia lake country dispelled, however, when the leader asked, “Any way we can give following a couple of days spent with my parents. After a stop you a hand?” These rugged riders assisted my friend get plugged in Bostwick, an old cotton town, I suited and saddled back up to continue my journey home. A lady rider about my age had pulled in and reinflated, then accompanied him back into town to a local bike shop, for a better examination of the tire. When my friend offered to not long after me, and now was having difficulty firing back up her old Harley Sportster. Our eyes met, and I could see the look of “can buy them all dinner for their troubles, they graciously declined, but each shook his hand, wished him luck, and went on their way. “Just you help me?” in her eyes. Without hesitation, I removed my gear, glad we could help” was their response. retrieved my tool kit, and went to her aid. The problem fortunately The late singer-songwriter Rich Mullins once penned a song that, was minor, a battery post that needed to be scrubbed of corrosion though not specifically about the motorcycling community, most and tightened down. A warm thank you, a grateful handshake, and certainly applies to how many of us view each othershe was on her way, as was I. Motorcyclists have some unwritten codes, which we all (mostly) abide I will be my brother’s keeper, not the one who judges him. I won’t despise him for his weakness; I won’t regard him for his by, such as “the wave,” riding staggered with each other, among strength. others. Notably, most motorcyclists also follow the rule, “never I won’t take away his freedom; I will help him learn to stand. leave a fellow rider stranded.” This is regardless of the brand or type of bike. I’ve been on the giving and receiving end of this “biker And I will, I will be my brother’s keeper. -Rich Mullins, “Brother’s Keeper” goodwill,” and it’s one of the many reasons I love the motorcycling I frequently ride with a widely diverse chapter of the Christian community. A couple of months ago, I was driving my pickup home from working Motorcyclists Association, called the Kneebenders, made up of all kinds of bikes, all kinds of riders. We include sport bike riders, uptown, when I witnessed a young sport bike rider on the opposite cruisers, vintage, a couple of ADV riders, and several Harley riders. shoulder, struggling with something at his rear wheel. I whipped around as soon as I safely could and came to his aid. Turns out, his We are “red and yellow, black and white” like the old children’s chain master link had broken by his rear sprocket, and for nearly 40 Sunday School song. We have men and women riders, and we run the gamut of socio-economic status. We even come from the minutes he had been fiddling with trying to fashion a snap of some four corners of these United States. Despite all this, we share two kind to get him home. “No one has stopped or even slowed down commonalities—we are all Christian, and we are all riders. We to offer any help, not even to make a call for me,” he lamented. I are devoted to honoring “the code” among any and all we might lived about 5 miles away and had a motorcycle trailer, I told him, and offered to transport him and his bike to his house, which turned encounter. With all the divisiveness in the world today, even in our own culture, out to be only a few miles away as well. I sped home, hooked up as riders we have the opportunity to make a positive impact by how the trailer, grabbed a box of straps, and returned to load man and we treat each other, and how we extend a helping hand to those machine. Upon off-loading the bike at his place, he offered to pay me for my “troubles,” which I respectfully declined. “It’s what we do,” around us. Let’s endeavor to be “our brother’s keeper,” and model togetherness and generosity to a divided world. I told him. BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Women’s World A Lady and a Moose on a Harley

Diana Smith of Lexington, Virginia is a rural mail carrier. When not driving her Jeep on the mail route she rides her pearl white Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster with her 3lb 4oz Blue Chihuahua, Moose on the tank. Diana grew up in Daytona, Florida riding dirt bikes. She had brothers and her dad was a mechanic so being around cars and bikes was just a part of life. As a teen, she had a serious accident while riding on the back of a friend’s Yamaha 750 and spent a week in the hospital recovering from multiple injuries and broken bones. She decided then that she’d never again ride on the back with someone else driving. She didn’t ride for a long time—then in her twenties, she rode a bigger dirt bike and laid it down. As she married and raised three boys she didn’t ride at all and was petrified when her sons had a little scooter. She was afraid for them and wouldn’t even get on it when they asked. Besides, her husband didn’t like women riding motorcycles. After the boys were grown she and her husband separated. One day the Fire Department down the road hosted a Poker Run motorcycle event. As she was watching the bikes go down the road in front of her home Diana remembered how much she’d loved riding as a girl. Now she was ready to put some adventure back into her life! She went out and bought a bike! Diana’s little dog Moose was her constant companion and often BTRsits 26 on | BORNTORIDE.COM her shoulder like a parrot. When they go through a drive-up window people regularly comment on how cute he is and ask to take photos. Diana says Moose has more personality than any other dog

she’s ever had. He loves attention and he loves to ride in the car with her. Since he loves the car so much she wondered if he’d like the motorcycle. At first, Diana tried riding with Moose in the sling that she carries him in for hiking. He didn’t like that so much, so she began searching for motorcycle pet carriers and found a bag that sits on the tank. It has a hole in it so that Moose can stand and stick his head up. She also bought him a vest that clips to the bag for safety and a little pair of goggles. They’ve gotten mixed reactions riding around together. Most people think it’s just the cutest thing and want to take pictures. Occasionally someone will say they don’t think there’s any way the dog could enjoy riding and that the noise must hurt his ears. Once at a traffic light a woman shouted through her window, “That’s animal abuse! The dog can’t possibly like that!” Diana knows Moose loves it! He especially loves riding through town where it’s stop and go. He doesn’t like going fast and slumps down in his bag when he’s ready for a break. She carries water and his favorite foods—Vienna sausages and hot dogs—when they’re riding so he gets refreshed at every stop. Moose’s chest swells up with pride when people come over to the bike to see him, pet him and take pictures. He loves the attention! When he’s not on the bike his ears perk up at the sound of a Harley. “Moose is a Chihuahua but, on the motorcycle, he becomes a Great Dane,” says Diana. “He stands up looking like he knows he’s a badass when he’s on the bike!”

Craven Moorehead Summertime Fun?

Independence Day is gone along with Memorial Day and the summer heat continues to rise. In my neck of the woods, we are greeted daily with scorching heat and the inevitable afternoon downpour. That’s why we all moved to Florida, right? Gotta love this place. Anyhow, I have written about the 4th of July and what it means to everyone along with one of my endless diatribes regarding Memorial Day, so I won’t drag you, my dedicated readers down that same old rocky road. For most people the 4th means family and friends getting together for a great cook-out, fireworks, fun and a lot of beer. As usual, I forgot to turn in my story early, but I have been kind of busy lately. The more it rains it pours in my life, but yet I live on with the adverse climate and situations. Sometimes it is difficult to become inspired when the chips are down but we all must continue on. Anyway, on top of all the stuff I have to deal with on a daily basis, a lot of really weird, unusual and unpleasant things are happening in my life for some reason. I didn’t mean to upset the natural balance of life or overturn the apple cart, but things continue to become more uncomfortable every day. I’m not even trying to complain here but I am curious if anyone else goes through the same sort of crap that I am going through. Feedback is always appreciated but read on for some important information regarding your security and safety. Scammers are out there. Nuff Said. I would have never thought that I, a poor underemployed writer and delivery boy would ever be the target of a scam to steal my minuscule amount of money, but yet, it happened. It seems that BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM

I purchased a very small amount of fuel at a gas station near where I live. I only go to two different places and both are within a couple of miles from the house. Well, I learned a very important lesson by doing my regular routine. I guess the most important thing that I learned from all this is that you should NEVER put your debit card in a gas station card reader. I don’t know which location was compromised but I do know that some scammer read his skimmer and emptied my bank account. I know, it wasn’t like I had a lot of money in there, but I could sure use that money right now. Having nothing isn’t very funny but after spending hours at the bank branch and 3 or 4 days on the phone with the fraud department, all I have to show for it is a negative balance. Yeah, they assured me that the bogus charges would be reversed but as of this date, nothing has happened. It shouldn’t take two weeks to straighten out something that I was told would be corrected weeks ago. So, if you have a bank account and a debit card, just go inside and pay for your gas. Don’t let these idiot thieves steal your identity and money. It makes life miserable believe me. I’m used to being broke but not being robbed and then lied to. I will not mention the bank’s name here but every one of them is same anyway. Just be careful. I remember that in the TECO sucks blog that I warned the readers not to plug your prong into an un-authorized socket but now it’s apparently more important not to use card readers to buy your fuel. Like I said, just go inside. Hopefully, things will get better, but I have to say thanks to a couple of my friends that helped me through some of the recent rough times and kept me from starving. It is appreciated. I needed some food and some of them came through but now I don’t know which way I am going. It’s a day to day existence and every day something else comes up. It’s incredible how you can live life on top and then suddenly you are kicked to the curb. It’s just life I suppose, and I hope that all of your lives are going along good. I said last month that I would always keep a positive attitude and as tough as it is, I still continue to do that. One other warning: NEVER say “It could be worse” because trust me, it will get worse. I am a veteran of that war and I can’t tell you any exciting stories of victories against the enemy. No need for me to be a downer here but reality indicates that S#!t happens and sometimes it happens to the best of us. And the worst I guess. Who am I to judge anyone else? I just want everyone to survive, thrive, and have a happy life. Be successful if you can and if life kicks you down, just get back up if you are capable. Enjoy the liquid sunshine and the open roads and keep the rubber side down. Next month, I will discuss Harley-Davidson’s decision to avoid tariffs and taxes by building motorcycles in the UK. Not this month though. Too much stuff to do and we all gotta keep on moving.

Christian Motorcyclists Association of money by buying a bucket of all black wiring to hook up the electrics. It was a nightmare trying to trace out a problem, and several of the guys laughed at my bad choice. The point is that while I was eager, I eventually had to confess to the bike shop owner that I was in over my head. I needed help, so he sold me colored wiring, a handlebar clutch, and while laughing, gave me a firm pat on the back! By going to someone that knew how to fix the bike correctly I was able to overcome my lack of knowledge. There is a verse in the Bible, in I John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right.” When I think about some of the consequences I’ve had to face because of not being careful that I was making a good decision, it is a wonder I survived it all. Whenever I’ve gotten into a really big jam, I know that I can call on God to forgive my foolish actions and to make things right again. Make no mistake; there are consequences to bad decisions. I had to completely rewire that chopper, and that suicide clutch almost lived up to its name with me on board one afternoon. Just like that bike shop owner got me out of a fix; God has always been there for me. Because of trusting in Jesus as my Savior, I have been completely forgiven of my past. Would you like to know that kind of forgiveness? In The Wind, Denny Dingler Check out BornToRide.com for more articles from Christian Motorcyclists Association

During my college years, I brilliantly decided to replace my Honda 750 with a Harley. I got a loan and started looking to see what was available. I just missed a beautiful, chromed-out bike that was even decorated the way I liked. The only problem is that I was about 5 hours too late getting the loan and someone snatched the bike before I had a chance. Unfortunately, the bug to actually own a Harley bit hard, I became desperate. The only thing I could find in my price range was an old Panhead basket case in a rigid frame, with a suicide clutch. If that clutch didn’t get your heart going, nothing would! That bike, for me at that point in time, was the wrong ride! I should have been patient and waited until a more appropriate bike came along. Anyway, I went ahead and bought it, buckets, cardboard boxes, and miscellaneous parts. Every Saturday, I’d load up the bed of the truck with all the parts and go down to the bike shop and work at assembling the various pieces. One of the consequences of my actions was having to nickel and dime myself to purchase missing or worn out parts. After all, the bike was about thirty years old. Another consequence of a bad decision involved saving a lot BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
