If you ride a Motorcycle, you know that out on the road you might as well be transparent, because car drivers often look right past you. They might notice the car or truck behind you, but you, in all your “narrowness,” may not register in the visual cortex of even the most alert drivers. Be as conspicuous as possible. Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. Always have your headlight on, and use your high beam or an aftermarket headlight modulator during the day (where allowed).

Pretend You’re Invisible. If you assume others on the road can’t see you, and any car that can hit you will hit you, you will tend to ride in a hyper-aware mindset and learn to notice every detail in your surroundings. That’s why an oncoming car driver might turn left in front of you at an intersection.

Hundreds of riders from across the southeast converged on Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville, Georgia July 13-15, for a weekend of breathtaking mountain vistas, fantastic riding, great music, vendors, food and drink at the first annual Great American Biker Bash. Sponsored by Born To Ride and Copperhead Lodge, the event included a BTR bike show with multiple categories, rocking concerts by Breaking Point and Cowboy, and a fireworks show on Saturday night. Sponsors included Frazier’s Harley-Davidson, ProRider Atlanta, Lawbike.com, Tri-County Shrine Club, Georgia Riders, and Grandaddy Mimms Moonshine. Rain had been forecasted for the whole weekend, but only fell for

a couple of hours on Saturday morning. With the famous Gauntlet route, Richard B Russell Scenic Byway, the Suches Loop, and Wolf Pen Gap Road, among others, north Georgia is a biker’s dream for riding. Once the rain broke, Copperhead saw a steady stream of riders coming in and going out for some pavement pounding the rest of the weekend. The band Breaking Point jammed with shows Friday night and Saturday, with sets including classic rock, country, and a few old oldies just for fun. Cowboy, billed as “The Ultimate Kid Rock Tribute Band,” rocked Saturday afternoon with a long set of Kid Rock faves and Southern Rock gems, thrilling the crowd. Copperhead Lodge is one of the

Born To Ride, the Hottest Motorcycle Magazine in the State, Real Content, Real Value

premiere destinations in the southeast for motorcycle riders and the perfect “jumpoff” point for all the best riding in the region. With accommodations ranging from a bunkhouse-style set up, to hotel rooms, and incredible cabins for rent (many with motorcycle garages) there is simply no better location to lodge and ride the southern end of the Appalachians. Michelle Evans with her extraordinary staff and facilities insured a great time was had by all. Born To Ride thanks all the aforementioned who made the event a resounding success, also including ABATE Georgia, Christian Motorcyclists Association, and all the great vendors who made the days memorable. Not many females currently run professionally in motorcycle road racing, but those who do, have definitely earned their place. Here in the States, in MotoAmerica, there are only three—Caroline Olsen in Supersport 600, Melissa Paris in Stock 1000, and Jamie Astudillo in Liqui Moly Junior Cup. And of these, only one has rewritten the record books—Jamie Astudillo. We pointed out in our May issue that Jamie etched her name in the MotoAmerica/AMA Road Racing archives as the first woman to ever podium in an American professional motorcycle road racing event when she took third place in race 2 of the season opener at Road Atlanta. Riding for Quarterley/On-Track Racing, Jamie has consistently stayed in the points chase, racing in the top 10 across the first portion of the season. Jamie is “running with the big boys,” and challenging for the front in every race. We had the opportunity to catch up with Jamie at the Road America round in Wisconsin, close to mid-season, and spent a few minutes discussing her life and racing. We found Jamie to be a winsome, enthusiastic, warm personality off the track, and a joy to converse with. Yet underneath the “typical teenager” visage, there lies the heart of a young lion, on the hunt for racing glory. Jamie’s parents originally hail from Ecuador and Costa Rica but have raised Jamie and her two older brothers in Pennsylvania. Like the famous Hayden racing family, the Astudillo kids have all followed in their father’s tracks, racing motorized two and four wheelers since early childhood. When asked her first riding age, Jamie revealed, “I first started riding at 2 years old, a Yamaha PeeWee 50, and was racing by 3.” I was stunned, as most two and three-year old’s can barely walk, much less ride. Jamie raced quads for several years, then returned to cycles by age 7. Riding motocross was a family activity the Astudillos enjoyed together nearly every weekend, and by age 12, Jamie recognized, as did her parents, that she not only had a great love for racing, she was quite good at it. BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Jamie competed in Motocross, GNCC woods racing, even a few hare scrambles. Recovering from a cracked collarbone at age 11, she found her way back to racing within a few months and discovered she was faster than before, going from a top 10 rider to a front-runner. “I was just so hungry to race again, hungry to be up front,” she reflected. Watching the last round of the national WMX series race, seeing all those women riding pro on factory bikes, and witnessing Ashley Folick win one of her four Women’s MX Pro titles, Jamie told herself, “I’m going to be on that podium one day. This is what I want to do with my life.” After enjoying great success and increased notoriety in Motocross, Jamie received a Facebook message in 2015 from Melissa Paris, MotoAmerica Stock 1000 racer, inviting Jamie to try road racing by joining her team. Jamie stated, “I figured I had nothing to lose. I mean, it’s a motorcycle, just another discipline, so why not give it a try?” After a struggle acclimating to pavement, Jamie soon found her pace, and by 2017 competed in the MotoAmerica KTM Junior Cup series. She took an offer to race for Quarterley/On-Track in 2018, the team that produced last year’s Junior Cup champion, Benjamin Smith. She hasn’t disappointed, filling those shoes quite adequately across the first half of the season. Jamie has big dreams. She would like to eventually dominate the MotoAmerica Junior Cup class and aspires to one day move onto the international stage, competing in WSBK Supersport 300, or even MotoGP’s Moto3 class. Being a dad of daughters myself, I know the pride of watching your girls succeed. Jamie makes her parents proud, I know—I could see it in their eyes as I interviewed Jamie at their team truck. The sky’s the limit for Jamie Astudillo, in racing and in life. As a race fan, and a “daughter dad,” I wish Jamie all the best success.

Women’s World Gritty Dirt Bikes and Graphic Design

Kim Teems of Chattanooga, Tennessee grew up riding on the back of her dad’s motorcycle. As an adult with two small daughters, she went back to college. She took the MSF class to get a motorcycle license so she could use her dad’s Honda 500-4 as transportation to and from school. In fact, her first solo ride was to class! It wasn’t long before Kim was using her education in graphic design, her love for bikes and her hobby of taking photos all together for business. While taking photos at a H.O.G. Rally with her boyfriend, a motorcycle magazine asked to use her photos. While her ‘real job’ was as a graphic designer for The Print Shop, Kim co-founded a local motorcycle magazine. This allowed her to attend bike rallies, poker runs, and other events as a photographer. As she was traveling around to various motorcycle events, Kim became familiar with off-road riding and thought it sounded fun. Then while dating a guy who rode adventure bikes she found the best of both worlds as his Suzuki V-Strom could work both on and off roads. Kim sold her street bike and got a V-Strom. She could ride it in BTRthe 26 woods, | BORNTORIDE.COM on fire roads, on dirt or gravel. This takes different body movements than riding on pavement and it took a while not to feel terrified. Always a rebel she thought, “If it scares me I want to!”

One very painful lesson is that on an adventure bike you can jump off the bike and let the bike go down. Kim didn’t! She blew out her knee. She had to recover mentally and physically as that accident really messed with her head. Still, she was determined to master adventure riding. Kim became involved with FACES: The National Craniofacial Association. She used her connections in the motorcycle community to plan a poker run event as a fundraiser for them. Kim coordinated the poker run for several years and it was a major fundraiser for FACES, a non-profit organization that provides education, empowerment and financial assistance to adults and children with craniofacial differences. After working as a graphic designer, software trainer and coowning another magazine Kim eventually became communications director at FACES. She also does freelance graphic design which you can check out at KimTeems.com. Kim currently has two bikes. A Yamaha XT250 to ride on the dirt and a big BMW F800 GS adventure bike. The heavier bike is great for back roads, dirt roads, and primitive camping. Motorcycles, graphic design, photography, communications—Kim has blended her skills, talents, and hobbies into an exciting career and fun life!

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BIKE NIGHT

From early spring until deep into fall, many motorcycle shops, gear/apparel stores, and restaurant/bars host monthly “bike nights,” inviting riders to come to enjoy great food, entertainment, demo rides, door prizes, and of course, interaction with fellow bikers. I always try to frequent these in my area and am rarely disappointed. Invariably, I always meet someone new. In striking up a new conversation, I often strike up a new friendship. All kinds of people, from all kinds of backgrounds, on all kinds of motorcyclesall sharing the common bond of a love for riding. Several years ago, I met a rider named Jonathan at a Cycle Gear Bike Night, who rode a custom Suzuki Hayabusa. He introduced me to several friends there with him- Ryann, KD, Test, and Monte, all members of a CMA (Christian Motorcyclists Association) “Fastlane” chapter in the area. I’d never heard of Fastlane chapters, made up of CMA sport bike and “street fighter” riders, and they invited me to hang out with them and the BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM

rest of their riding group. That was six years ago. Those guys, and the other members I’ve met in the years since, I now count among my closest friends. In fact, they were influential in my forays into track day riding, which I’ve written about here numerous times. I’ve always been the outgoing type, never afraid to introduce myself to unfamiliar folks. In so doing, I’ve met some amazing people, heard some amazing life stories, and found myself on some amazing adventures, often because of people I met at local bike nights. I remember the conversation with a guy named Mike, who told me he had, across the span of a year, ridden through every county in the state of Georgia- all 159 of them. He had documented the odyssey in photos and maps, all ridden on a 1980 Yamaha XS1100. An amazing adventure. I met a new rider once, a lady named Rhonda, on a Harley Sportster 883. She was excited to be riding, but still somewhat timid in the saddle, so several of us invited her to join us on a few casual countryside

rides we had planned. She met us for a ride or two, and we enjoyed getting to know this independent gal, feeling a sense of satisfaction as we watched her grow in confidence and abilities. All because she took a chance and rode in for her first bike night. Bike nights are beneficial in many ways- the obvious connections riders make with each other, but also with the local shops and vendors involved. They not only promote and sell their products, they also build relationships with customers and event patrons, which is good for everyone. The men and women of the local establishments that I’ve met at bike nights, I have come to know, trust, frequent and refer others to. Next time you hear of a local establishment putting on a bike night, make plans to ride over. You might make some new friends, behold some beautiful motorcycles, enjoy some tasty biker grub, maybe even win a few nice prizes. Our sport is best enjoyed in the community, and that’s really what bike nights are all about. Rob Brooks

I Will Make Your Old Tanks Last Forever

k n u J s “Thime Out Ca f This O nk!” Ta

The heart and soul of your bike is the fuel tank. Originally, the tank was new and clean, but over the years that all has changed. If you are tired of cleaning carburetors or think you need a new tank because yours is too rusty or it leaks, I have the solution. We clean tanks and preserve the metal – even permanently stop leaks! The highgrade epoxy coating we use is second to none; we can even remove most Kreem and Red-Kote liners. We have a fast turnaround time; it’s the easiest thing you’ll do all week. Craven Moorehead Hmm … Something Uplifting?

From month to month, I never know what I am going to write about. So, on my occasional visits to the BTR office, I often ask our editor Jesse what he would like to see me write about. On my last visit, he commented that he would like to see me write something ‘uplifting.’ A short discussion ensued regarding hydraulics and other airpowered devices that lift up our automobiles, motorcycles and a myriad of other items that need to be elevated for service or maintenance. To make matters worse I continued on about other things like the NASA program that sends a variety of junk into space, the SpaceX program that sends an even larger amount of junk into space and some other crap regarding the space station, life on Mars and the inevitable moon discussion which causes everyone to look up occasionally just to see if there is actually a man in the moon. Yes, allegedly we have already sent astronauts to the moon and some of the conspiracy theorists have claimed that it never really happened, but I kinda believe that we actually went there for at least a few minutes. I’m not too sure what we expected to find there, but I suppose it is like when I go to explore a new trailer park somewhere. We came, we saw, and we got a few alien’s phone numbers. The parallels are amazing I think. Well, maybe not. It may cost millions and billions of dollars to explore space while just visiting local trailer parks only costs a few bucks in gas. The difference? My simple travels never make the news but if I had a rocket launcher, I would be super famous. It’s not like I ever wanted to visit outer space but sometimes I wonder if I had - would my life be better? I don’t think so. I should just stay grounded in the simple biker lifestyle that has made me what I am. Whatever that is. ... I think it is working for me so far and I don’t think I would look good in one of those space suit gimmicks. It was my birthday in July. Right before Christmas in July so I learned a lot about getting older and older. The first thing that comes to mind is that it’s okay getting older when you consider the alternative and the other thing that I learned is that social media is a messed-up place from time to time. One of the good things that happened during my birthday week was that I was thrown a party at a local bar by a fellow musician and friend which in my opinion was under-attended, but I did get to play some music with some of my long-lost friends from the live music scene. I also re-connected with one of my longtime love interests which was nice. As life goes on you have to realize what is truly important and keep on having the faith. So, when my actual birthday rolled around one more of my true friends stepped up and he and his wife stopped by with some beer, a homemade birthday card, and some food. Had this BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM

not happened I would have sat here on my butt in the trailer park with the dawgs and little or no food. As you have noticed, I have not mentioned names here because I neglected to get permission to publish these names, but you know who you are. I’m not too big on publishing names anyway. I would never want to cause anyone embarrassment just because I was bragging. Honestly, I don’t have too much to brag about. Mine is a meager broke-ass life so why drag anyone else down into it? Levels of success and survival are relative anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. We all just keep on keeping on - against all odds. Last month I mentioned that I would report on the tariffs that the government would impose upon the importation of certain goods up to and including the Harley-Davidson Motor Company which is manufacturing our beloved bikes in the UK somewhere. Well, that is likely not to happen now - or anytime soon due to the primary election going on. You cannot turn on the news from any source without hearing the political mud-slinging, self-aggrandizement and bragging about all the candidates that are running for various offices here in Florida. I have not been able to verify anything on the national level even while using the internet. Trump has claimed ‘Fake News’ forever but it is all shadowed by politicos promoting their position and power to make a change. I usually vote by mail but sometimes it’s kinda cool to go to the polls and watch the opponents duke it out. If we all could just get behind the concept of living in a free country and leaving all the hate and discontent behind it would be great but there is a lot of polarization going on simply based upon political party. Why can’t we just go vote for whom we want without a conflict? I know a lot of people do not believe in Trump or his political stand and I am neither agreeing or denying that he is doing the right thing. Whether I voted for him or not is not the question here, but the reality exists. He IS our President and we have to learn to deal with the situation whether we like it or not. It’s not like everyone is against him but daily I see the media taking shots at him from people reporting a plethora of acts that are questionable especially regarding porn stars and Russian collusion, but yet he carries on. If he would lose his Twitter account, he may get a better approval rating. That is just a personal observation. Either way, we must continue on and enjoy living in our great country. My opinions are my own and should not reflect the opinions of this magazine or any other entity where this article or content within could be distributed. How’s that for a disclaimer?? I guess I felt like I should say that - not because I fear everyone hating on me. I get enough of that but simply because my dedicated readers understand that I am often outspoken, controversial or otherwise not socially acceptable. This is the life I live, and I really enjoy hearing the feedback from my readers. Thanks so much. ... I hope everyone has a great summer and keep dodging the storms and distracted drivers. Be safe and keep the shiny side up!

Christian Motorcyclists Association Have you ever gone on a Mystery Run, only getting the first check-in location to start the run with, and no clue as to the final destination? What a great way to spend several hours with friends and having the chance to determine just how good the ride leader for your group is at following hints (directions). Usually, the ride instructions are based on the odometer reading, as a way to determine how far one hint is from the next. Mystery rides can be a lot of fun if the directions are followed carefully, you can get a real sense of accomplishment. It is cool to find one’s way to the final destination, within a timed arrival. The camaraderie is strong, the good times are great, and it is an excellent way to have some fellowship. The above is all true; however, there is a potential downfall if the directions are not paid close attention. You find yourself not arriving at a checkpoint in an expected time, and that sad feeling of being lost can wash over the group, and especially over the ride leader. About the only thing that can be done in that situation is to make the dreaded U-turn, get back to the last checkpoint, and try again. The important thing is once the correction has been put into place, don’t look back! It is more important than ever to focus BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM

on where you are going and being careful to pay attention to the upcoming clues. Looking back will just make doubt and fear creep into one’s mind, and cause uncertainty and hesitation. Every aspect of our lives can be impacted by ones deciding where to put their focus, on the hopes of the future, or the failures and mistakes of the past. In Philippians 3:13-14, the Bible tells us, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Just like in a Mystery Run, one’s focus must remain fully on God and His perfect love. Just like in a Mystery Run, on occasion one will take a wrong turn in life, or misread a direction, calling for the need of U-turn. The good news, when we fail before God, He has already forgiven us, in advance. This doesn’t give us carte blanc to go against God’s Word but a way of forgiveness is already worked out. All you have to do is to call on Jesus to be your Savior, and to forgive you of your wrongdoings. Then, just like in a Mystery Run, look to where you were last on target in God’s Will and begin living for Him once again. Most of all, when you receive that wonderful forgiveness, don’t look back anymore, look to the future before you! With God’s forgiveness, you’ll have a great ride! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
