The Cherokee Blue Ridge Run made a thunderous return to the Smokies, with a weekend full of bikes and bands Sept. 7-9 at the Cherokee Fairgrounds. The event was filled with adventure, stunts, and live bands including classic rock superstars Molly Hatchet and Vince Neil. While Molly Hatchet and Vince Neill were the headliners, there was music all weekend, including Blackfoot, the Michael Allman band, and regional favorites that have developed quite a following. There were more than musicians performing – motorcycles were in the spotlight, of course. New this year to the Cherokee Blue Ridge Run … flat track racing, in partnership with Jason Griffin Racing. On Saturday they BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM
also had action on the oval track one mile from the fairgrounds on Acquoni Road. Back at the fairgrounds, they had the American Motor Drome Company’s Wall of Death. The vintage live-action thrill show featured a barrel-shaped wooden cylinder 30-feet in diameter. Daredevils rode along the vertical wall inside the drome performing tricky, fancy, and acrobatic riding. Circus Una rode on a tightrope high above the fairgrounds, and Teach McNeil was amazing with the stunts he did on a stock BMW. We also witnessed the Trick Trials rider and balance master Adam Holbrook defying the laws of gravity. All of the concerts and stunt shows were included with the price of admission, which
was very reasonable; $15 for an individual day ticket, and $30 for an entire weekend pass. Kids 16 and under got in free when accompanying a paying adult. This was a family-friendly event, we encourage the next generation of enthusiasts to discover today’s great sport of motorcycling. Even those who’ve been enjoying the open road for years fell in love with motorcycle life all over again. The Rally included custom bike shows and factory demo rides. Everyone liked the ‘try before they buy.’ Just riding in to meet up with other like-minded fans of all things two-wheeled was exciting. Word on the street is there were even more vendors than last year, and next year is expected to be even bigger and better. So, see you in 2019.

Tifton Harley-Davidson Dealership Receives Gold Bar & Shield Award
If you are riding south toward events in South Georgia and Florida, or north toward Atlanta on I-75, once you get into Tifton, Ga., you may have seen the two-story Harley dealership at exit 61. Even though this dealership spot had been around for almost 16 years, the latest owners, Eric Sternberg and Eddy Soberon have transformed this dealership into a friendly customer-oriented stopping place. Even though his dealership is only 1 1/2 years old, through the efforts of the owners and their staff, as well as customer support, garnered the dealership with the prestigious Gold Bar & Shield Circle of Excellence Award for 2017. This award is given only to the top 25 out of 678 dealerships Nationwide. Having placed 8th overall is quite an achievement for this young dealership. The Gold Bar & Shield Award is presented by the Motor Company based on motorcycle & related product sales performance, customer service and satisfaction, and operational measures. So, what better way to show appreciation to their customers is to have a Customer Appreciation Event with food & refreshments,
music, and the Busted Knuckle Stunt Show Tour. The music started with the band “Naturally Southern” and ended with a Cowboy “Kid-Rock” tribute. They also had a drawing for a $500 Tifton H-D shopping spree. The Busted Knuckles Stunt Tour is a Kick-Ass, V-Twin Thrill Show performed solely on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. These American Daredevils perform stunts that include wheelies, acrobatics, burnouts, jumps, pyro, and whatever else these crazy performers have up their sleeve. Every show is unique and different. You never know what tricks you may see during each show or what tricks they may come up with in the middle of it all. Exciting, crazy, fun, and just Bad Ass are just a few words to describe the Busted Knuckles Stunt Tour. A loud and energetic crowd is just fuel to the rider’s fire. So the louder the crowd gets, the wilder they get! What was impressive was not only did stunt rider owner King Tony and performer, Eric Rocks, do stunts with Sportsters and a Street Bob but also with the bigger Dyna Lowrider and Softail Slim under the narration of their multi-tattooed MC, “Drewcifer”
Congratulations to Tifton Harley-Davidson for receiving the Gold Bar & Shield Award
Drew May. This stunt got more intense and showed the crowd that it was real, when Kid Rocks kicked his bike up doing a wheel stand, hit the titanium rear plate and it flipped up and over, slamming his face down on the pavement. Despite facial bleeding, the 8-year veteran of the show got up and walked away from the crash to the cheering crowd. The performance lived up to and beyond their name. Born To Ride Magazine congratulates Tifton Harley-Davidson on their award and the following thank you to their customers for helping them achieve this award: Owners Eric Sternberg and Eddy Soberon; General Sales Mgr: Mike Desoto; Sales Mgr: Mike Webb; Service Mgr: Joe Lawrence; Parts Mgr: Jeremy Hill; Finance: Kelly Estep; General Merchandise Mgr: Selena Woodall; Marketing Director: Elizabeth Brown. Cycle World Athens hosted its 12th annual Ride to Remember on September 9, and the event surpassed all expectations, in attendance and impact. What began as a customer appreciation ride back in the early 2000s quickly morphed into the 9-11 Ride to Remember by 2006, growing from a healthy 300 bikes to over 850 last year, then exploding to over 1,100 bikes this year, according to Kevin King of BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Cycle World Athens. The event is free to all, but donations go to a variety of “fallen heroes” foundations and public safety support causes in the southeast. The ride begins at Cycle World, then winds its way through numerous small towns in north Georgia, snaking through various winding roads in the mountains, ultimately arriving at Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville. Riders were then treated to a free barbecue
meal on-site, sponsored and provided by the Athens HOG chapter. Mike Newell, marketing director for CW Athens and ride director for the event, gave us some amazing additional details. “There are dozens of local groups and clubs that come together behind the scene that make Ride to Remember happen. Twenty-six public safety agencies assisted along the 110-mile route. A group of 12

American Legion Riders led by Robert Wilson performed as scouts along the route to ensure the ride was clear and safe.” Every town we rode through, local PD assisted in coordinating and blocking traffic, every FD elevated flags on ladder trucks and saluted, and locals poured into the streets to wave, display flags, or just snap photos. Even some churches brought their children’s classes out to enjoy the
spectacle as the procession rumbled by. As the entourage wound up through the north Georgia mountains, great care was taken to ensure riders didn’t bunch up but kept moving through the frequent twists and turns. Copperhead was fully prepared to receive the massive numbers, and the afternoon lunch and festivities came off without a hitch. Newell noted, “The entire biker community is just amazing. Clubs, groups, organizations,

and individuals who may not normally associate, join as one group of patriotic Americans and ride together as one ... that makes me so proud to be part of this event. We will ‘Never Forget.’” Born To Ride is humbled to have been a part of this momentous event. We are proud to support our military, public safety, and first responders every day. Women’s World From Violent Abuse to Victorious Adventure
Eight years ago, Leah Misch a young nurse in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was morbidly obese, in a brutally abusive relationship and disconnected from her family. Today she is healthy, fit, and explores the world on her motorcycle, ‘Scout.’ getting out of the abusive BTR 26After | BORNTORIDE.COM relationship Leah made a bucket list of things she wanted to do but had never
imagined that she could. Adopting the moto, “You Go, Girl!” Leah lost ninety pounds and ran a 5K. Another goal was to ride a motorcycle. She started with a Yamaha V-Star Classic. Tragically, Leah crashed her motorcycle. She broke her back, punctured a lung, broke ribs and came close to being paralyzed. In the slow recovery from her injuries, Leah

regained her ability to walk, then started jogging and eventually returned to running. Her grit and determination grew as she fought to get back to her life. That included motorcycles. Her second bike was a Suzuki 650. Eventually, she got her dream bikean Indian Scout 1133. The first year, Leah put 10,000 miles on ‘Scout’ and was encouraged to submit an essay to the Garage-Girls Ultimate Bike Makeover contest. Her essay won! Articles about the contest were publicized and this resulted in media interviews and speaking engagements where Leah could share her story to give others hope. Indian Motorcycles has sponsored her in various ways and often provides bikes for her to ride when she’s traveling too far to take Scout. So far Leah has ridden a motorcycle in thirty-nine states and three countries. She expects to complete all fifty states next year. On her travels, Leah met New Zealand racer Lee Munro, grand-nephew of Burt Munro who set a world speed record on an Indian motorcycle in 1967. This inspired the film, “The World’s Fastest Indian.” In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Munro’s record-setting race, Indian was sponsoring the “Spirit of Munro” event where Lee would re-create his uncle’s famous run. Through this connection, Leah was able to fly to New Zealand and tour the South Island on a motorcycle provided by Indian. She visited Burt Munro’s house and various sites significant to his story. Another connection hooked her up with someone on the North Island and provided a motorcycle for her to use while there. Leah chronicles her adventures on RidingWithLeah.com where you can see photos, read more of her story and connect with her on social media. Subscribe to Leah’s newsletter to follow along as she checks off the remaining fifty states and continues to embody the “You Go, Girl!” message of overcoming obstacles, taking risks and achieving goals.

TAKING THE LONG VIEW
One of the skills we riders must consciously and constantly practice, to stay sharp, on our bikes is our situational awareness. Keeping focused while riding through ever-changing scenarios, constantly scanning our surroundings for potential threats, maintaining a “360-degree” awareness, are all vital street skills. Yet, there are moments while riding that we can still experience a brief lapse in attention and lose perspective for a moment in the saddle. Nick Ianatsch of the Yamaha Champions Riding School trains hundreds of racers and street riders every year and teaches an additional skill that I’ve added to my own survival arsenal. Ianatsch calls it “looking sooner, scanning back if necessary.” This entails periodically searching far forward while riding, casting your vision out as far down the road as possible, then drawing your gaze back to your immediate situation. This practice reorients the mind, resets focus, and broadens perspective while at speed. Kyle Wyman, MotoAmerica Superbike racer and YCRS guest instructor, describes the practice as “looking two steps forward, BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM
one step back ... two ahead, one back.” Ianatsch further explains, “On the street, you look all the way through the freeway onramp to the traffic flowing or not flowing. You look not just around the canyon corner but skip your eyes to the road unwinding below you and see the radar trap on the next straight. You look past the green light and see the car leaving the gas pump and heading into your lane. Big picture. And then you bring your eyes back to the nearest probable issue.” Big picture. An apt descriptor. Every motorcycle riding instructor guide students to “get your eyes up, look farther, and go where you look.” All sound advice and good practice. But I’ve improved my “big picture” while riding by incorporating Ianatsch’s “look sooner” skill, which I’ve come to call, “taking the long view.” When I’m riding, I’ll force my eyes occasionally to look as “deep field” as I can, taking in every movement, every potential hazard, and obstacle, every possible escape route, far out ahead of me. I certainly acquire a bigger picture this way. I find myself with a wider awareness, a calm centering, and a renewed concentration, as I
ease my gaze back to the immediate. I often draw a deep breath and blow it out slowly in the process as well, adding to the reinforced control I experience. Taking the long view certainly applies to life as well as riding. We can feel so overwhelmed in the course of our days, with events in the world as well as our own lives. Not only that, we often live soaking up a constant bombardment of information and stimuli, from which it is difficult to extract ourselves. Periodically “unplugging from the Matrix” as my wife calls it and pushing our vision beyond our immediate to the distant; to those things most important in the long run that can help us restore perspective. As a Christ-follower, I’m reminded of this frequently as I read the Bible. An example is found in Colossians 3:2- “Set your mind on things above (long view), not on things of this world (immediate view).” This helps center me in trying times, personally and when I look out at a crazy world. So in riding and life, may we broaden our big picture and endeavor to take the long view. May you ride and live better for it. WILLIE G. READS IT!
“Following too closely” is a factor in crashes involving motorcyclists. In traffic, motorcycles need as much distance to stop as cars. Normally, a minimum of two seconds distance should be maintained behind the vehicle ahead.
FOLLOWING ANOTHER VEHICLE
To gauge your following distance:
• Pick out a marker, such as a pavement marking or lamppost, on or near the road ahead.
• When the rear bumper of the vehicle ahead passes the marker, count off the seconds: “onethousand-one, one-thousand-two.” • If you reach the marker before you reach “two,” you are following too closely.
A two-second following distance leaves a minimum amount of space to stop or swerve if the driver ahead stops suddenly. It also permits a better view of potholes and other hazards in the road. A larger cushion of space is needed if your motorcycle will take longer than normal to stop. If the pavement is slippery, if you cannot see through the vehicle ahead, or if traffic is heavy and someone may squeeze in front of
you, open up a three-second or more following distance. Keep well behind the vehicle ahead even when you are stopped. This will make it easier to get out of the way if someone bears down on you from behind. It will also give you a cushion of space if the vehicle ahead starts to back up for some reason. Following a visit to our headquarters by Ken Engelman, I reached out to Born To Ride. Ken, who is an American, was on a tour around Israel to see how the country uses and works with motorcycles to respond to medical emergencies. He was very impressed with our operation and suggested that I reach out to Born To Ride. After looking at your website and online media, I thought that this would be a terrific place to tell the story of how motorcycles are used to save lives here in Israel. United Hatzalah’s motorcycle responders are Israel’s most active volunteers. We come from all backgrounds and religions to provide the very first response to medical emergencies across the country. While some of our men and women only began riding later on in life, their mission to save lives, combined with the need for speed in shaving off response times and the simple enjoyment of riding a motorcycle combines to make all of us riders simply born to ride. I am thankful that you are helping us spread the word. Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring our model of lifesaving to other locations as well and help more people.
When United Hatzalah’s (Hatzalah is Hebrew for Rescue) Founder and President Eli Beer said that he would create an emergency medical service system that would enable first responders to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency with a national average response time of fewer than three minutes, people didn’t believe him. When he said that first responders were the tools that saved lives and not ambulances, people didn’t believe him. When he put EMTs, paramedics, and doctors on motorcycles and built a box in the back to carry all of the lifesaving
equipment present in an ambulance aside from the bed and backboard and called it an ambucycle, people thought it was crazy. Now after 12 years, 5,000 responders, and 750 ambucycles people believe. Having attained those goals, United Hatzalah of Israel is now set to enhance its current response system to enable first responders to arrive at the scene of an emergency with an average response time of 90 seconds across the country. It sounds absurd, especially when most Western countries, provinces, counties, and cities

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 37
have set a goal of attaining an average response time of 8 or 9 minutes. But most of those authorities don’t use ambucycles and highly trained volunteer responders who drop whatever they’re doing and rush out at a moments notice to respond to emergencies in their local vicinity. 90 seconds seems like a dream. But, as Eli and United Hatzalah have already proven, when you are dealing with speed and ambucycles, dreams very quickly become a reality. Saving critical seconds in the field of EMS and beginning the process of prehospital treatment in the case of any medical
emergency faster is the mission. In Israel, United Hatzalah is doing exactly that and providing treatment before an ambulance can arrive. By utilizing its fleet of ambucycles to get emergency personnel through traffic faster, a national network of trained EMS personnel, and advanced geolocation technology similar to UBER, United Hatzalah has already succeeded at lowering the average emergency response time to 90 seconds in major cities such as Jerusalem, parts of Tel Aviv and others. Other organizations are following suit and thus the patients benefit from the resulting flashmob of responders who
Born To Ride Magazine, Real Editorial Content, Real Value for you the Reader
rush to an emergency at any time day or night. Arriving at patients faster and beginning treatment is key to raising their chances of survival, and ambucycles are the key to arriving faster. The concept of the ambucycle came to life during a terror attack in the crowded Jerusalem neighborhood known as Beit Yisroel. This neighborhood is known for its narrow and crowded streets. On March 2, 2002, a Palestinian terrorist blew himself up in a suicide bombing that killed 11 civilians including two infants. Ambulance crews and medical volunteers rushed from all over to
BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 39
provide assistance, but the streets were already full of hysterical pedestrians and drivers fleeing the scene and the rescue teams couldn’t get through the traffic for a lengthy period of time, preventing life-saving aid from reaching the injured and dying. Seeing the carnage and resulting traffic congestion, the idea was born to put medical responders with a full complement of equipment on motorcycles, allowing them to cut through the traffic and reach patients during the golden hour following illness or injury. Ambucycle responders receive fully accredited medical training and equipment appropriate for their level of caregiving. They also receive specialized driver training that
BTR 40 | BORNTORIDE.COM
earns them certification to use their ambucycles at high speeds as emergency vehicles. The ambucycles all come equipped with lights and sirens, which drivers are allowed to employ, only after passing the extra level of training and an internal test. The volunteers who make up the organization are as diverse as the country, with volunteers coming from all religious and political backgrounds. “In the northern region, we have Druze, Muslim and Christian residents volunteering alongside their Jewish peers. In the South, Bedouins work handin-hand with other responders. The organization boasts six exclusively Muslim chapters across the country including Kfar Kassem,
Taibe, Shibli, Wadi Ara, Nazareth and east Jerusalem and large swathes of other chapters are mixed bringing responders from all backgrounds to work together. That is why our name says ‘united,’ that is part of what we do,” Beer declared. United Hatzalah has active branches in three other countries including Panama, Ukraine (Kiev and Uman) and in the United States (United Rescue of Jersey City, NJ). It has also built partnerships with other EMS organizations in Brazil, Argentina, India, Mexico, South Africa, and its model of lifesaving is being developed in more than a dozen others. Already, the concept of the ambucycle has been adopted in many of
Born To Ride Magazine, Real Editorial Content, Real Value for you the Reader
these countries as well as in Zurich, Sweden, where a similar but smaller organization known as Hatzolah Zurich, has begun to employ ambucycles due to the results that were seen in Israel. The work that these organizations do is not aimed at being the transport vehicle to take an injured or sick individual to the hospital, but in being the immediate response to save critical seconds and begin treatment before an ambulance can arrive. In the case of mass casualty incidents (MCIs) or trauma, triage can begin, and immediate medical treatment can already be taking place before the ambulances arrive, enabling the ambulance teams to simply load the patients
onboard and transport them to the hospital for continued care. This model has stood up under real-life situations including terror attacks, natural disasters, and everyday medical emergencies such as car and bicycle accidents, illnesses and traumas. In Israel, the organization responds to an average of more than 1,000 calls daily. This front line of community-based EMS response is a force multiplier for emergency and disaster preparedness at the highest level and fulfills the Judeo-Christian value of “love thy neighbor.” Perhaps what is most impressive about the entire organization, is that all of its ser-
vices are offered completely free of charge to the patient. In the 12 years that the organization has been operational, none of more than 2,500,000 people who have been treated by its volunteers has ever received a bill. Instead, all of the money comes from donations from both inside Israel and international supporters. “I made the commitment when I began this organization, that no one should ever hesitate to call for emergency medical assistance because they can’t afford to pay an ambulance bill. Therefore, all of our services are free, they have always been free, and they always will be free,” Beer concluded.
“This is such a real International story of passion for life we are honored to tell.” Thank You, Ron Galletti

Meanwhile, Blackheart, the demonic son of Mephistopheles, comes to Earth, along with three fallen angels who bonded with the elements air, earth, and water. They are tasked to find the lost contract of San Venganza. In response, Mephistopheles makes Blaze the new Ghost Rider and offers to return his soul if he defeats Blackheart, though he is also told he has no choice in the matter. Blaze is driven straight to the station on his first ride, where he transforms into the Ghost Rider and kills the earth angel, Gressil. He also saves a young girl from a mugger and incapacitates him with the penance stare (a power that allows the Ghost Rider to make any evil person experience all the pains they caused on their victims as long as the victims were good and not evil). The next day, he meets a man called the caretaker, who seems to know all about the history of the Ghost Rider. He tells him everything that happened was not a dream and that it will happen again, especially at night when he is near an evil soul. When he arrives home, Blaze finds Simpson and reveals himself as the devil’s bounty hunter. Unconvinced, she walks away in disbelief. After a brief imprisonment for the murders that Blackheart committed, Blaze kills the air angel, Abigor, and escapes from the police before returning to the caretaker, who tells him of his predecessor, Carter Slade, a Texas Ranger who hid the contract of San Venganza. Blaze returns home to find that Blackheart has killed his friend Mack and has taken Roxanne captive, threatening to kill her if Blaze does not deliver the contract. Blaze tries to use the penance stare on Blackheart, but it does not work as Blackheart has no soul to burn. Blaze returns to the caretaker, who reveals himself as Carter Slade, and obtains the contract. Slade tells Blaze that he is more powerful than his predecessors since he sold his soul for love as opposed to greed. Slade leads Blaze to San Venganza, then gives Blaze a lever-action shotgun before fading away. After killing the water angel Wallow, Blaze gives the contract to Blackheart. THE PHANTOM MOVIE REVIEW
Do you have a favorite Biker Movie we don’t have? Let us know: info@borntoride.com
Christian Motorcyclists Association Twenty-Five Smiles Per Gallon
One of the elements of excitement while riding a bike is the ever-changing condition of the road. In one short ride, one can encounter a hot, muggy road all the way to a chilly rain burst that soaks you to the bone! The road may be dry and uneventful in one minute and full of hazards and potholes the next. One thing I find is that it never gets dull while riding. Perhaps one of the great changes is found when a six-foot snake crawls across the road in front of you and ends up perfectly aligned to get caught by the front wheel and flipped up into the rider’s legs. That will get you going! I’ve ridden over thin layers of sand that were not noticeable until aligning the bike to make a turn. I have also discovered a thin layer of cinder at the end of a driveway just waiting to loosen the grip on the road. It’s no thrill to have to give the bike a little power to keep it moving forward while keeping the rear tire from breaking loose. I’ve seen various items show up, such as in one case a bed pillow, as it emerged from underneath the car in front of me, calling for a quick adjustment of the path of travel. A buddy of BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
mine had to drive over an extension ladder that showed up in his roadway, with only time to hang on tight! You simply never know what is going to be in front of you and your front wheel. If you are not careful, your best-laid plans for a relaxing ride can become a distant memory. Fortunately, there is hope! In the Bible, in Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV), the Lord says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The cool part about having a personal relationship with God is that He knows what is ahead on the road, for each and every one of us. He allows us to face some challenges and difficulties, for they strengthen us and prepare us to better handle the issues life lays out for us. He also allows us to have those beautiful rides, with the weather just right, and about twenty-five smiles per gallon!! The fact is that God has it all under His control; we just need to trust that He really does know what is best for us. That’s why He will sometimes allow us to ride through some storms of life, as well as enjoying the great times in the wind. The next time you are on a fantastic ride or riding through a monsoon, just know that God has everything under control. His plans will give you just what you need, and in the end, what is best for you. In The Wind, Denny Dingler
