The Course that can Save your Life
Rob Brooks, photos Phil Gauthier It is widely understood and acknowledged that motorcycle police officers are among the best trained and most proficient riders on the planet, in any country. The extensive and strenuous street training they undergo challenges the limits of man and machine. Very few police officers undertake the vigorous course. Fewer still successfully complete it. Yet those who do possess a skill level in riding virtually unknown to the rest of the motorcycling world. Ken Anderson is one of those elite riders. With over 30 years experience as a motorcycle officer, including hundreds of hours of intensive training on multiple levels, and a seasoned police instructor himself, Ken has now brought this training to the civilian motorcyclist. ProRider Atlanta takes main skills taught and drilled into motorcycle officers and translates these into a civilian format, to benefit the wider rider world. I had the opportunity to participate in Ken’s ProRider class back in October, and the 8-hour course was one of the most challenging and rewarding I’ve ever undertaken. I took the course on my 1998 Yamaha Royal Star since it’s equipped with front and rear highway bars in the event of a drop (which didn’t happen, I’m proud to say). I’ve always been very confident on the big Yamaha, having logged nearly 16 years and 90,000 miles on it. By
the end of the day, I would come to realize how much more I and my bike are truly capable of. Led by Ken and aided by Ken’s wife Patty, we were coached through riding tasks as basic as the proper way motor officers mount and dismount their bikes (from the right side, never the traffic side), how to

correctly lift a dropped bike, and the safety reasons for always staying in gear while at stop lights. Ken taught then demonstrated proper clutch/throttle modulation, with Ken asserting, “The power of your motorcycle is not in the throttle, it’s in the clutch. You can twist the throttle all day, but the bike won’t roll forward until you release the clutch.” BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 7
So, learning your clutch’s “friction zone” and how to manage your throttle and rear brake in unison with it, is key to improving slow control riding, obstacle avoidance, and negotiating tight cornering without resorting to “duck walking” your bike through parking lots. We worked on the skills of clutch/

We practiced this from 20 mph, then 30, then 40 mph, seeing the evidence of stopping distance in our skid marks. My confidence in my riding skills certainly has notched up a level. *Oh, a cool feature of Ken’s class- you can return to keep practicing the skills with subsequent classes, free of charge, for up to one year (subject to space availability in the class). I highly recommend Ken’s ProRider Atlanta motorcycle course. Every

The technique for passing another vehicle is the same whether you are riding a motorcycle or driving a car. First, before passing, you should be two (or more) seconds behind the vehicle you want to pass, and have positioned yourself in the left-hand side of your lane. From this position, you have to check oncoming traffic and the road to make sure you have enough distance to pass safely. Don’t even think about overtaking if a corner is coming up.

Wow, what an opportunity that we’ve been presented here with the Master Bike Builder’s contest in Gibsonton, January 2019. They already have an existing event there, it’s been going on 16 years and there’s no other rally like it. We’re going to have a bike builders challenge. It happens during the Gibtown Bike Fest, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We’ve broken it out so it can be as fairly judged as it can because we want all the bike builders to compete on an equal plane. So we’re not just saying your bike’s gotta shine or you gotta have this or you gotta have that. Every single person, regardless of whatever BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM
the class is, has a shot at winning our grand prize. And our grand prize is pretty impressive. You’re gonna get a really cool trophy that is custom made and it’s not made out of motorcycle parts or any of that. It’s built with aluminum, big cherry wood—solid cherry wood bases, they’re very impressive. You’re gonna win a cash prize, and that’s for everybody in all six of the classes, right! In the end, the guy who scores the highest, regardless of what class he’s in, is the overall winner, and that guy is gonna get an opportunity to compete at the AMD qualifier (American Motorcycle Dealer Show). Depending
on what city it’s hosted at, we will be paying for that trip. Bob Kay has already given us that authorization to do it, and that’s a big deal. Your entry is paid. You’re guaranteed that your bike will be accepted. And that’s one of them deals where not everybody gets accepted. I mean I’ve competed in the thing and it’s tough, so being accepted and guaranteed a spot, that says a lot for whatever you’ve built! If you win at the AMD Show, you go to Germany to compete. We give you a transportation fuel allowance. Your hotel room is paid. One of the things that’s important here is to remember that we’re only

going to take 40 bikes. So we’re gonna send packs out to guys who really want to compete, be represented by BTR magazine, be filmed for BTR TV and in the end everybody’s going to be recognized as an elite bike builder. That’s what it’s all about. So a lot of people say, “Well Jim, how do I find out about any of it?” Well, you just call up Born To Ride or visit www.MasterBuildersShow.com and you’ll be able to see the information that we’ll post up. You call them up or me 727-504-3138 and say, “I’d like to get a packet.” And we’ll send a packet right out to you. You get a wristband for the VIP party, we’ll have a buffet in there and of course, you know as you go along you have access to 30,000 or more people who are gonna be wandering through Gibtown Bikefest. When you’re setting up that day we’re gonna give you free lunch. So far so good right? Free lunch, free VIP party, big venue, exposure, custom trophies, cash, and an opportunity to compete on the world stage. But first, you win our show then you win the National Show. Then if you’re lucky to go there and win, you go to Germany with Bob Kay AMD Show. BTR: Forty builders in that and then there’s gonna be a Ride-in show both days. Jim: Oh absolutely. Yeah, you gotta have the Ride-in show. It’s ... and the reason it’s both days is that many of the shops are just like mine. On Saturday I’m working so I can go to the Ride-in show on Sunday. Some guys have Saturday off and they want to come in riding. You don’t have to be a builder. You don’t have to be anybody. You just got to have a really cool bike. BTR: To have Bob Kay, who is an icon in the business and maybe you can tell people how powerful Bob Kay
is? How his endorsement of our show is a stepping stone to his big show. Jim: Well you know that it is powerful, exactly. Bob’s been around forever, worked with the AMX Expo in presenting the Championships of America show. Is involved with the biggest bike shows in the world, the AMD Challenge, and this is the guy who runs them. So when he puts enough faith in Born To Ride and what we’re doing with this show, I mean, for me alone, I’d like to be able to take that and frame it and put it on the wall. You know, because this guy is literally saying, “Hey we trust you enough that you’re gonna pick a bike that can compete with what we’re used to.” So, and even for the builders, I mean to get that opportunity, I think their National Championship for the AMD qualifier was in Cherokee this year. And to be able to receive that trip guaranteed with the possibility of going there and winning, wow! And then you get an all ... I mean the possibility on that is endless, so for Bob Kay to be on board and give us that
Jim: Well I mean, the overall experience for the whole thing, from the start is ... if I’m a bike builder and I am; I think somebody calls me up and says, “Listen I’m doing a big cash bike builder show. I’ll like you to be part of it.” That in of itself tells the builder that somebody cares. Then when you bring in an organization that qualifies a bike for the AMD ... you’re gonna enter ... and I guarantee you it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. So again, having that endorsement it’s a lot of stuff, man, so I’m hoping that one of our guys whoever we pick is the overall winner and goes up there and knocks it out of the park. Be a part of this show call Reverand Jim. 727-504-3138
endorsement. You can’t say enough about that. BTR: So what you’re saying is they’re gonna get a lot more than just a trip if they win or just being a part of it is going to be a great experience, wouldn’t you say?

Women’s World CONNECTING YOUR PROFESSION AND YOUR PASSION
Kelly Vandever enjoyed riding on the back of her husband’s bike, but on a beautiful July day when she wanted to ride, her husband Rich, was out of town. That’s when she decided to learn to ride her own. Her first bike was a Honda Rebel she now rides a Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster Superlow. Since Rich likes to tinker with bikes, he made sure she had a comfortable seat and an easy clutch. Her first long trip with Rich and their friends Jim and Stephanie was quite an adventure! When they started out riding from Georgia to South Dakota, his clutch started slipping. Later the valve stem of his rear tire had to be replaced. In Missouri, Stephanie got a flat tire. A local guy helped but bent the tube in the process, so it went flat again. In South Dakota, Kelly and Rich got separated from their friends. When they reconnected, Jim had hit a coyote and had fur stuck in his wheel rim! In January of 2018, Kelly entered a contest to be the social media spokesperson for a motorcycle attorney. She was one of six finalists. The gal who won was an MFS instructor and that got Kelly to thinking. In her day job, Kelly is President
of Professionally Human which helps transform business results through better communication and leadership skills. (www. ProfessionallyHuman.com) Professionally she teaches adults to build career skills. Motorcycle riding is her passion. What if she combined the two? The internationally renowned developer of motorcycle training courses, The Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (www.msf-usa.org) certifies instructors to teach. It’s a long and challenging process. Having served 11 years of active duty in the Navy and retiring as a Lt. Commander, Kelly doesn’t shy away from a challenge. First, she met with Austin Guest, site coordinator of the Alpharetta, GA MSF campus who agreed to sponsor her as an instructor candidate. He encouraged her to take the MSF Basic RiderCourse again. Then she took the MSF Basic Bike-Bonding RiderCourse class to refine her skills. Next, Kelly worked as a Range Aid, shadowing various instructors. She dropped cones for course exercises, did demo rides and observed their training techniques. Then she was ready to take the MSF RiderCoach Preparation Course to learn the

fundamentals of teaching. In this sixty-hour course, there’s a test you must pass to continue the program. At the end of the course, classmates teach a complete BRC course to a group of new riders. RiderCoach Trainers evaluate your performance to verify that you qualify for the MSF RiderCourse RiderCoach certification. Kelly was then allowed to teach in a team with two experienced coaches before being able to teach in a team of two. “I was used to speaking and classroom delivery,” Kelly says. “I’m comfortable instructing in a learner-centered environment.” What she found most difficult was finding the right level of coaching for each individual student. Exactly five years from getting her own motorcycle license, Kelly worked on a threeperson team to teach an all-woman MSF Basic RiderCourse.

The Wonder of the Wise Men
Ever since I was a child, I’ve always been intrigued by the account of the wise men in the New Testament book of Matthew 2:1-12, these magi (from the Greek term “magoi” meaning “wise men” or “learned ones”) who crossed a continent to visit and pay homage to the Christ Child. Even now, as a moto-traveler and part-time history teacher, the story and journey of these men is a yearly favorite of mine to read and reflect upon during this season. You probably know the story of how they showed up in Jerusalem not long after Jesus’ birth, inquiring as to the whereabouts of the newborn “King of the Jews” after following a sign in the heavens, a star that had guided them across the miles and months to Palestine. This caused quite the consternation across the city, especially with King Herod, a Romeappointed political hack who wasn’t even Jewish. The magi soon reacquired the star, this time directing them south to Bethlehem and to the dwelling where they found the Child and family. It’s a fantastic, dramatic tale, one I enjoy returning to year after year. Give it a read. Who were these faraway travelers? Where did they come from? How did they know what they knew? Legend and song from the Middle Ages say there were three and they were kings from the Orient, but the Biblical text gives no indication of these. We know they carried three distinct types of gifts (gold, frankincense, myrrh), that the term “Magi” points to them being upper-class scholars and scientists, and they came from “the east.” Most modern historians and scholars believe the men likely hailed from the region of Persiamodern-day Iran, Afghanistan or Pakistan. Their journey then could have been between 800-1200+ miles, taken them anywhere from 3 to 8 months, and they arrived sometime within Jesus’ first year. It was an amazing time in human history - Europe and North Africa was experiencing “Pax Romana,” the peace of Roman rule, trade routes such as the Via Appia, the Persian Royal Road, Silk Road and Eurasian Steppe networks connected peoples and kingdoms, and knowledge was exploding, in cultures across the globe. In the midst of those incredible times, a handful of Mesopotamian scholars hit upon the prophecies of a little-known coming event in Palestine that would have earth-shaking implications. So they dug BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM
deeper. What they found, in ancient Hebrew literature, drove them to set out across Asia, braving the dangers and hardships, to be there for this colossal event. They read the ancient Hebrew prophecies (Numbers 24:17, Isaiah 49-53, etc.), did the math with the Hebrew calendar (Daniel 9:24-26), and discovered what Jewish scholars should have known but no longer looked for. They found the Savior of the world. How did they even begin? An often overlooked historical fact- some 600+ years earlier, the Hebrew kingdoms of Judah and Israel had been attacked, sacked, and destroyed by the Assyrians and later, the Babylonians. In both instances, much of the population had been forced into exile, scattered across their empires, the Jewish scholar class and young people utilized and indoctrinated into the ways of those kingdoms (a documented practice both employed). Across hundreds of years, those Jews kept their faith, maintained community in foreign lands, and apparently left their mark on those cultures, rather than the reverse. The schools and libraries of Hebrew religion and learning they established had apparently endured, through the Medo-Persian empire (the one that first let Jews return to their homelands), the Greek, down into Roman times. God had given the first public sign, not to the Jewish scholars, not to the royalty in Jerusalem, not even first to the shepherds, but to foreigners, across a continent. Their response? They came, they bowed, they gave, they worshipped, they obeyed (Matthew 2:12). An interesting closing note - In the gifts, the magi brought, so laden with symbolism (gold=royalty, frankincense=priesthood, myrrh=sacrifice & death), Joseph and Mary had more than enough to live on themselves in a foreign land, Egypt, when they were forced to flee Herod’s murderous rampage to slaughter the Child Messiah. God supplied their every need, as He promises us as well (Philippians 4:19). And the wise still seek Him… From my family and all of us here at Born to Ride, may you and yours have a very Merry Christmas. Rob Brooks

Chuck Liddell was born on December 17, 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. In Hollywood he is known for his work in Movies, such as Kick-Ass 2 (2013), War Pigs (2015) and How High (2001). Prior to his film work he was an Iconic MMA UFC World Light Heavyweight Champion. He is one of the Fighters who put UFC on the map. Chuck Liddell became one of the most recognizable Global Sports Superstar Figures to crossover into TV Commercials, Appearances, Movies and more. It’s an Honor to have him part of the Cast of Nation’s Fire and to top it all off, he is a Legitimate down to Earth True American Success Story. When we asked him about Nation’s Fire he said “It’s Gonna Knock You Out!” BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM
RG: So here we are at Nation’s Fire filming with Chuck Liddell on the set in Burbank, California. Man, it’s great to have you here. What did you think about the movie and your part as Vito? Chuck Liddell: Oh, it’s been fun. It’s another chance for me to get killed in a movie, so it was good working with everybody and I think it went well. RG: So you’re playing a role with Krista Grotte and her husband in a pretty heavy-duty scene, and Krista’s been nailing it on this movie. How did you feel about working with Krista? Chuck Liddell: Oh, it made it real easy. It always helps me when someone’s great across from me to make me look better. So I’m still a little bit new to this and getting more and more confident with it, but it always helps to have someone across from you delivering their lines and making it easy. She is very talented.
RG: Being on the set today, it’s a little different from in the ring. How have you adapted to getting into acting? Chuck Liddell: Well, the way I’ve adapted, I think I take stuff from training for fights. It’s the same thing, you know. It takes practice. It takes work. It’s hard, and I practice at home. I take classes. I do work. I’ve been working on my craft, and I’m just hoping that each movie, I get better and better. I’m enjoying it. RG: So being a warrior in the octagon brings you closer to being able to take care of business on the set because it is a lot of preparation? Chuck Liddell: Yeah. It’s all the same stuff. You want to be really good at what you do. You got to practice. You got to work. No one gets there without hard work and dedication. So I try to put all that effort and things that I used to put into fighting into my acting roles and characters. RG: Your acting career could go a long way

with this. You could act forever, man. What are some actors who have inspired you? Chuck Liddell: Well, I always like watching the big action things. I like guys like ... well, I mean, the Rock’s a big one. He’s one of the biggest actors out there right now, came from WWE, and just a great guy and fun to watch in his movies. He’ll do anything, from the tooth fairy to being a tough guy, so I kind of want to model my career and to do something like that would be great. I want to be able to do funny stuff. I’m more of a comedian guy, a comedic movie guy anyway, so I like to do that. I’m open for anything. RG: What about a couple of your favorite movies you like to watch or that have inspired you? Chuck Liddell: Okay, movies that inspire me. Well, it’s pretty obvious, Gladiator was an awesome movie. I loved what that one— he’s fighting for his family and fighting for revenge. For Love of the Game is a great movie. I think, kind of going back over a
guy’s career and trying to finish up on a high note is fun to watch. I like a lot of movies. I like it with a message, so movies like that, to me, stick out. RG: I know you have younger children. How about those kids’ movies? We all have to watch them with our kids a lot, and there are some good ones out there, right? Chuck Liddell: Oh, there are some great kids’ movies out there. I think The Croods is one of my favorites. I actually really liked The Smurfs movies, the first and the second one. The Smurfs movies were a surprise because I never liked the Smurfs when I was a kid, the actual show, but I liked those movies, they actually turned out being pretty good. They were entertaining for me. I like the movies that my kids really love but also have a little bit of the fun in it for parents. Those are the good movies to watch. RG: You can’t have a movie without a writer, without a director, man. What do you think of this Thomas Churchill guy you got to work with today?
Chuck Liddell: Well, he’s made it easy to work with him. He really helped, gave me good advice on how to read the character, how he wanted it. He had a very good idea of what he wanted, which always helps let me know what he really wants to get out of me, and I think that helped. RG: Man, I tell you what. Chuck Liddell, you look pretty awesome on camera, and it was really an honor to have you in this film. I can’t thank you enough, from the cast to the crew, and everybody coming in and just being such a great guy and a great team player for this. Any last words? Chuck Liddell: I just wish everybody the best and hope this movie turns out great. I thought it was a great story, so it should be good, matter of fact it’s gonna knock you out! Thank You Chuck it was my pleasure doing this interview with you and I can’t wait to see you as Vito in Nation’s Fire.

4 Things to help your family if you’re involved in an accident By Matt Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group
When a serious car or motorcycle accident occurs, it is often a family member or significant other who is contacting an attorney on behalf of the injured party. While I hope neither you nor your family are ever in this situation, all motorists should share vital information with a trusted emergency contact to help ensure they’re adequately prepared in the event of an accident. Below is a list of information to keep up to date and share with your family member or significant other. 1. Medical Insurance: Provide your emergency contact with the name of your insurance company and your policy number. Often, it’s easiest to give them a photocopy of your health insurance card. ? 2. Medical Information: Do you have any known allergies? Are there items in your medical history that would be important for an emergency medical team to know, such as current medications or a history of heart disease? Make sure your emergency contact is kept up to date on your medical conditions. ? 3. Personal Injury Attorney: What is the name and telephone number of a trusted personal injury attorney that your emergency contact can call – even for some guidance prior to formal representation? The sooner your attorney can be called the better. 4. The iconic 1966 film featuring Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, and a cast of hundreds, is one of the most well-known biker exploitation films ever produced. In this classic film the “Angels” a California Motorcycle Club, travel across the state to retrieve a stolen motorcycle belonging to one of the clubs members “the Loser.” Heavenly Blues (Fonda) is the charismatic club president. At times he seems to have to ‘baby-sit’ his troop of fun-loving boozers and druggies. This one is a favorite of mine, because the producers actually used real Harley-Davidson ‘choppers’ and actually cast some of the real members of the Hell’s Angels. In short, it is one of those films that give bikers in general a ‘bad’ name, but those of us who really know the true way of the biker lifestyle will find it entertaining, and at times hilarious. The Angels ride through the desert to Mecca, California to look for the Loser’s stolen motorcycle. They accuse a group of Mexicans in a repair shop of stealing the motorcycle when the Loser finds his brake pedal on a workbench. After some mild insults and accusations naturally, a fight breaks out in the shop and the ‘taco benders’ as Fonda calls them wind up on the losing end. The BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM
police arrive, chasing the Angels on foot, and the Loser escapes on a parked police motorcycle. After a chase on mountain roads, one of the officers shoots the Loser in the back, and he later ends in a local hospital. Blues leads a small group of Angels to rescue the Loser and they subsequently “bust him out” of the hospital. In the melee a nurse is accosted by one of the Angels who knocks her out to keep the cops from discovering their presence in the hospital. The nurse later identifies Blues as one of the men she saw however; the audience knows that it was thanks to Blues’ intervention the assault stopped short of rape. Blues rebukes the member just before the cops notice their ‘suspect’ is gone. Later, the Loser dies at the Angels’ local watering hole from his injuries. The Angels move his body to an undertaker’s office-he demands cash “plus tax.” Using a forged death certificate the Angels arrange a funeral at a tiny church in the Loser’s rural hometown. During the service, Blues steps up to the minister and says those famous words “We just want to be free. Free to ride our machines without a hassle from the man. …” But when Blues says they just want to have fun, the Angels turn the service into a major party. The Angels remove the Loser from his Nazi flag-draped casket, sit him up and place a joint in his mouth. Meanwhile they also knock out the minister, tie him up and place him in the casket. Later, the Angels proceed to the Sequoia Grove cemetery to bury the Loser. The procession of noisy bikers gets the attention of the locals, who all gather to see the spectacle. One of the local kids throws a rock at the Angels and naturally yet another fight breaks out. This interruption prevents burying the Loser, and as police sirens wail in the background everyone scatters. One of the members begs Blues to go, but he refuses and tells his girl to leave with another member of the gang. This is where the other most remembered phrase comes in, as Blues sighs “there’s nowhere to go.” The last of the group leaves and Blues picks up a shovel and returns to the grave to bury the Loser. Just as I was going to call all my boozing buddies over to watch this flick once again, a knock came at the door. I opened it to see a mailman with an overnight package. I signed for it and opened it up, expecting something good. It was just a DVD and a note from the editor of this magazine demanding an immediate review of The Twilight Zone Episode #138 from 1964. This was disappointing news. In this short film a group of ‘bikers’ if you want to call them that are actually aliens from another planet sent to earth to infiltrate a small town. The local folks actually become fond of this odd cast, and befriend them. Little did they know the space-bikers were there to poison their water supply! I dunno … I suppose that it was getting late and I drifted off to sleep somewhere after the giant eyeball in the 1950s TV screen requested them to continue with the plan of destruction. This particular episode albeit cute, doesn’t really rate very high up there in the ‘biker exploitation’ world. I guess that’s just because it only exists in The Twilight Zone. …
THE PHANTOM MOVIE REVIEW

Christian Motorcyclists Association smiled, and waved at all the followers as we passed each other! We all had a big laugh and it only cost us about two minutes of lost time. The last memory I’ll share today concerns when a group of us rode up to Cedar Key from Crystal River. It was a partially cloudy day, I think about a 30% chance of rain, and twice we ran from being very warm and dry to being very cool and wet. The bright side of the ride was that we all maintained a positive outlook; and when we arrived at our destination, every one of us was refreshed and cool! It pays to have a strong, positive attitude when riding as we often face challenges along the way. In the Bible, in Philippians 4:12, the apostle Paul teaches, “I have learned the secret of being happy at any time in everything that happens, when I have enough to eat and when I go hungry, when I have more than I need and when I do not have enough. I can do all things through Christ because he gives me strength.” Now that is having a strong positive outlook! See, when conditions of our lives are less than favorable, we have a choice. We can choose to give in to the problem we are facing and begin focusing so much on the setback that we can’t actively be a part of the solution. However, when we put our faith and trust in Jesus as our Savior, He teaches us to not worry about the small stuff, and the fact of the matter is that it is all just a bunch of small stuff! One thing I have noticed over the years of riding is that you never know what’s going to happen five miles up the road, or sometimes before you even get out of the driveway! Life truly is, as described by Forest Gump’s mother in the movie “Forest Gump, “You never know what you’re going to get.” One day I had to visit a patient and decided to take the bike to his house as I knew he loved all things mechanical. I had just had the thousand-mile service performed but discovered when I went to get on the bike that there was a nail in the back tire. I could have gotten angry; instead, it was more of a disappointment and lesson to learn about motorcycle tires. Better days were ahead; I got the tire changed and was back in the wind in no time! Once, when filling in as Road Captain, I led a group to Stunt Wars, in Orlando. Everything was going smoothly, traffic across Orlando was bearable, and the weather was perfect. We got to within about a mile from our destination and as the leader, I missed a turn. We ended up going into a cul-de-sac, so I did the only thing that made sense. I maintained a good attitude, BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
