THE FUTURE HAS ARRIVED. AND IT’S ELECTRIC.
Harley-Davidson, the company that has defined the motorcycle industry for the past 116 years, today revealed two new concept electric two-wheelers and announced pricing and pre-order availability for LiveWire, its first electric production motorcycle, at the biggest show in consumer electronics in Las Vegas. The 2020 LiveWire is now available for US dealer pre-order at h-d. com/LiveWire with deliveries expected this fall and select global markets announced at a later date.
The LiveWire represents the future of Harley-Davidson, bringing high-performance electric propulsion, evocative design, and cellular connectivity to today’s rider. The first of a new electric portfolio of motorcycles that provides an all new two-wheel experience, LiveWire delivers thrilling acceleration, agile handling, premium materials and finishes, and a full suite of electronic rider aids and interfaces for a completely connected experience. The performance of the LiveWire
motorcycle will deliver an exhilarating ride for seasoned motorcyclists, while its clutchfree design also makes the experience for new riders easier than ever. HarleyDavidson also debuted two additional, electrified future concepts that further explore the potential of urban mobility. In keeping with LiveWire, both concepts bring Harley-Davidson’s expertise in expressive two-wheeled experiences and push boundaries in design and technology. These motorcycles are a significant part of BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 15
the More Roads to Harley-Davidson plan to accelerate building the next generation of riders through new products in additional motorcycle segments, broader access and a commitment to strengthen dealers globally. “We’re at a historic juncture in the evolution of mobility, and Harley-Davidson is at the forefront,” said Matt Levatich, HarleyDavidson’s President and CEO. “Innovation that moves the body and soul has always been at the heart of our brand, and this next chapter in our history is about creating products and opportunities for existing and BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

These two concepts are further statements towards that our commitment to lead in the electric mobility space that begins this fall with the production 2020 LiveWire.”

Helen Upson-World Traveler
out across Europe, visiting V-Max rallies and riding the most stunning sights, cities and scenery the continent has to offer—the Swiss Alps, Germany, Scandinavia, Vienna, Venice, the Balkans, into the Iberian Peninsula through Spain to Portugal, to name a few. I asked Helen how long she’s been riding, and she mused, “Got my first bike in 1973, a Yamaha XS650, then followed that with a couple of ’74 650s, bought a Midnight Special 850, then I was first in New Zealand to own the XS1100 1.1. I stopped riding for 20 years, raised a daughter, became a solo parent, then started riding again in 2007, with an XJR1300 before my V-Max. Always Yamahas.” Helen also used to breed and train German Shepherds, on a 10-acre kennel she built years ago on the north island. “I’ve loved German Shepherds since I was 16. I’ve trained security and police dogs across the country, and still have seven of them myself.” She’s also unique in that she was the first woman in New Zealand to earn a karate black belt, and among the first women with a motorcycle license. Cool. Helen’s weapon of choice is the vaunted Yamaha V-Max, but not just any factory Max. Hers has a modded, blueprinted engine that puts down 215 BHP to the rear wheel, as opposed to the stock 175 horses factory. That’s no small jump. Helen’s was purchased sight-unseen in Wellington, NZ, #114 for the 2009 model year, and modified inside and out. It’s a real moto-monster, and Helen handles it like she was born to ride it. Maybe she was. Back in New Zealand, Helen still operates a motorcyclist hotel and pub, called “The Black Dog,” hosting riders from across the island nation and across the globe. Helen has also ridden almost “Pole to Pole,” from the northernmost point of Norway in the Arctic Circle (North Cape) to the southernmost point of New Zealand. And now she’s here, touring America. An amazing human being. To follow her travels, you can find Helen on Instagram at “vmaxvsworld.” Rob Brooks If you have a story you would like to share with Born To Ride, Call: 888-795-5779
Sometimes opportunity knocks, sometimes it plays hard to get, sometimes it must be earnestly sought after. And then, there are times opportunity just drops into your lap. On a Friday recently, I got a call from my friend Terry Stickler with Skully Technologies. They are an Atlanta-based company producing high-tech “smart” motorcycle helmets with built-in navigation, heads-ups screen displays, etc. We’ve been trying to work out a time to meet up at their HQ so I could get a tour, when suddenly he quipped, “Oh, I need to tell you about this rider that came in yesterday to pick up a helmet she ordered from us! Her name is Helen Upson, and she’s from New Zealand. She’s spending the better part of 2019 riding across North America, after riding all over Europe last year. Get this- she’s a retiree, late 60s, touring alone on a hopped-up Yamaha V-Max. She’s heading for Florida to ride that state across January-February, before continuing her tour in the Spring. Fascinating lady!” I lamented, “Dang, that would have been one heck of an interview!” to which Terry replied, “I think she’s still in the Atlanta area, somewhere over on the east side, in Lawrenceville.” I jumped out of my chair, exclaiming, “That’s practically next door to me! Give me her contact info!” Terry obliged, and after making contact, Helen and I decided to meet for coffee the next morning. Talk about opportunity! Helen is a tough, crusty old gal, hardened by miles and years, but with an infectious smile and warm personality. Over coffee and hot chocolate, we discussed her adventures. And what adventures she’s had! “I first rode through Europe and England last year. I rode all the way to Asia, from Poland to Portugal, the whole continent. I think I did about 36,000 miles before shipping my bike to L.A.” Inquiring about her European travels, Helen recounted how she shipped her V-Max from New Zealand last May to Heathrow Airport in London, rode the beautiful British Isles before crossing the Channel, then set

Women’s World Modeling, Motorcycling, and Marines
Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, Amber Kaye Aranda hung out with the guys. With her Dad and two brothers, she was always around bikes and started riding in her youth. Her first bike was a ’95 Softail Custom. At age twenty-five, as a single mom, Amber was working for an engineering firm and accepted a job transfer to Telluride, Colorado. Of course, she took her bike along. There she enjoyed riding in a terrain that was totally different from Florida! She especially liked the long rides to Yellowstone National Park; Alaska; Sturgis, ND; Jackson Hole, WY and on Colorado’s famous Million Dollar Highway. Later she moved to North Carolina where her parents had been transferred in order to help her mother after hip surgery. With her Dad and a brother in the Marines, it made sense that she met and married a Marine! While pregnant with twins she gave up riding. For a while. Amber followed her husband to Miami and was a stay home mom. When the twins were two-years-old she divorced and moved to New Orleans where she went to work for Harley-Davidson. She worked in Motor clothes and later in sales. As a woman selling motorcycles she was sometimes met with skepticism. Some men would say that they didn’t want to talk to a woman about bikes. She knew she could win them over if they gave her a few minutes. Once they realized she knew the difference between a carbureted versus fuel injected engine they were usually comfortable talking motorcycles with her. Even in the masculine world of motorcycles, Amber shows her feminine side. She enjoys make-up and experimenting with hairstyles and colors. She did some promotional modeling for the dealership and was spotted by Harley-Davidson corporation who asked her to do a national ad campaign targeted to women. Now Amber works for Independent Diving Services and volunteers with the Battlin’ Betties. It’s an auxiliary organization that supports the nations veteran’s and first responders and raising awareness of PSTD. Creating programs and events designed to honor and serve; they appear dressed in the pin-up attire popular in the 1940s and 1950s as a nod to the patriotism of that era. For information on the organization visit BattlinBetties.org. Sometimes Amber combines her love of modeling, motorcycles, and Marines by modeling in pin-up attire with motorcycles. In particular, he taught himself to shoot from the bike, as in while it was moving, which yielded a perspective he had not seen much of before in the world of commercial motorcycle photography. After riding on borrowed bikes, Josh built his current ride, a chopped 1977 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Sportster® christened “The Locust,” from a box of parts and not much experience as a mechanic. “These may not be the prettiest bikes, but there’s a certain beauty in that they are used for their intended purpose. Each of these bikes has tremendous character,” Josh states. He further explains that he appreciates and feels inspired by the “pick up and go” mindset, and his camera becomes the gateway into what he has come to love - riding and shooting these natural moments. It is the photography that keeps him riding, and the riding that keeps him shooting great photography. BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM

“When we ride, we are completely in the moment, not thinking about the next stop or getting to a particular place,” states Kurpius. “For us, it’s all about the ride and experiencing everything around you. his motorcycle. The photos not only depict the raw beauty of America, but the beauty of the off-moments that reveal themselves in serendipitous ways. Just like his bike, the Locust, many of the bikes that Josh captures are stretched 1970s-style chopper, and they are rode hard. These bikes are continuously rebuilt, with parts regularly swapped in and out to keep them on the road, because the vintage machines Josh and his friends ride can only go so far without refueling or needing maintenance. Bike Hero Not For Sale
January is “Human Trafficking Awareness Month.” Meet Sally. Sally is a survivor of human trafficking. Yep! As an avid biker, she is one of us. An icon representing courage in the communities and people she touches. She is also a seasoned professional model who you probably have seen in bikerrelated media before. Sally is a true warrior. Her story and what she went through is gut-wrenching. I am privileged to be her friend. Sally is the mother to six children and a grandmother of two. She is currently Co-Director of “Fighting Against Trafficking Organization.” Sally also strongly focuses on her practice as a consultant championing the cause of victims’ rights of sexual crimes, domestic abuse, and violence against women and children. Sally recently won a supreme court case in South Dakota, making it case law across the country, thus giving victims of abuse who are able to prove they have long suffered and currently still suffer from their abuse, the ability to take their perpetrator to civil court for a jury trial and pursue punitive damages. If you voted in the last election, one of the issues to vote on your ballot was a direct result of Sally’s hard work on behalf of victims nationwide. Sally’s expertise has been utilized by legislators throughout the Midwest to help pass new and tougher sex trafficking legislation. She is a sought-after speaker and has successfully contributed to organizations such as; Creighton University’s Human Trafficking Initiative, Women’s Fund, NHTTF Thriver Committee, National Survivor Network, and the Polaris Project. So, what does that have to do with us all? Well, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally organizers, as well as the city of Sturgis, think it has very much to do with bikers. So much so they decided to team up with Sally’s organization and conduct a charity ride called “FAST Ride” which stands for “Fight Against Sex Trafficking.” In their Memorandum of Understanding the organizer’s state; “We recognize that trafficking doesn’t happen because of events like Sturgis. It happens because demand exists wherever there are large gatherings of people, and traffickers are more than willing to leverage any event to exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain. But we also recognize that the biker community, in general, is filled with good, compassionate men and women who could be inspired and engaged in combatting this evil; and this is the opportunity we hope to capitalize on with the Sturgis F.A.S.T. Ride 2019.” FAST Ride Sturgis event will consist of a one-day charity ride. The event will provide the opportunity for Fighting Against Trafficking to have a platform to be heard on the issues of Human Trafficking. It will also allow the EPIK Project to enroll more men into the
movement and for the City of Sturgis to proactively participate in the solution as well. The City of Sturgis, EPIK and Ride My Road will combine efforts to host the actual charity ride with the goal of 150-200 riders participating and purchasing ride tickets. Proceeds from the ride will go to the EPIK Project. FAST Ride Sturgis, Ride My Road and EPIK will also partner in creating a custom “Survivor Bike.” A bike has been donated for the purposes of creating a one-off custom build. Proceeds from the bike raffle will go to local organization Fighting Against Trafficking. The city of Sturgis has generously offered to help promote and market the Sturgis FAST Ride within the biker community and within the various networks connected with the rally. Sturgis will also lend logistical and tactical support to event partners with the possibility of a press conference. Fighting Against Trafficking is a SD-based nonprofit organization led by survivor-leader Sally Richardson and Senator Lynne HixDiSanto. Proceeds from this event will benefit the development of services for victims of sex trafficking. The EPIK Project is a Pacific NW-based nonprofit with work across 11 cities nationally. EPIK focuses on engaging male allies in the effort to combat the demand that drives sexual exploitation. Ride My Road in partnership with The EPIK Project, is a producer of the FAST ride. Ride My Road is committed to bringing awareness to the fight against human trafficking among the biker community. Through fundraising and public speaking Ride, My Road supports survivor-led organizations and celebrates survivors through photography and media. So my question now is; “When is Daytona Bike Week going to join the fight?” There are multiple well-intentioned organizations fighting against human trafficking in the nation. All effective in their own merit to various degrees. Sally so far has championed the cause because of her own testimony. The fact she is a biker makes her a good ambassador for the cause among us all. Sally is scheduled to visit Florida in January/February 2019. We should all look forward to seeing her.

Born To Ride joined motorcyclists from across the southeast for the Great American Motorcycle Show at the Cobb Galleria Convention Center in north Atlanta January 26-27, for the chance to browse the latest bikes, gear, accessories, and miscellaneous farkles. Dealerships and bike shops from across the South debuted the latest in twowheeled wonders from Harley-Davidson, Indian, BMW, Ducati, and the Japanese “Big Four”, but also newer and/or lesser known brands such as MV Augusta, Moto Guzzi, Hyosung, and one of the oldest moto companies in the world, Royal Enfieldamong the largest manufacturers on the planet outside of the U.S, now making inroads here stateside. Every genre of motorcycling was represented- cruisers, tourers, sport bikes, standards, vintage/classics, motocross, even trials. Also seen- the Zero motorcycles, BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM
all-electric bikes, offering a glimpse into one possible future of motorcycling. The show featured numerous leather and riding gear companies, notably Diamond Gusset Jeans, makers of superb, all-American riding pants. There were several vintage/classic restoration shops present, specializing in many of the legendary British marquees- Old Triumphs, Nortons, and BSAs. A bike show demonstrated the wide world of motorcycling, from radical modern custom baggers and raked out choppers, to old chopped/bobbed/ ratted oldies. We even beheld a fully restored Spanish Bultaco 360 early motocross, and rare find indeed. Wonderful rides, rallies, and destinations were present as well, with Copperhead Lodge, the Cherokee Blue Ridge Run, among others, and riding lawyers like Chuck Watwood (law bike.com) helping sponsor the weekend with tote bags, prizes, etc.
So many fantastic biker people, across the spectrum of motorcycling. With the departure several years ago of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show from Atlanta (or the entire southeast, for that matter), the Great American Motorcycle Show fills that gap left behind for us here in the Deep South. Men and women, young and old, from across the spectrum of our great land, came together to share and enjoy our common passion- all things 2-wheels (and sometimes 3) and a motor. The entire review could be summed up in a sentence: “This film created an image and a lifestyle that yet endures.” Yes, the image of a young Brando sitting on his Triumph motorcycle, dressed in a black leather jacket, tilted cap and a stolen trophy attached at the headlamp, is certainly one that literally everyone has seen at least once. Some of you still live that image today! This film arguably started the biker exploitation explosion in this reviewer’s eyes, and set the tone for hundreds of “B” movie skirt riders that are still being spawned as we speak. Released in 1953, The Wild One was based on a short story The Cyclists’ Raid by Frank Rooney, which was published in Harper’s magazine in 1951. Rooney’s story was inspired by the Life magazine expose dubbed “The Hollister Riot” published in July 21, 1947, after the famed ‘motorcycle weekend’ on July 4th. Curiously, that event is still celebrated in Hollister to this day! Further research will show that this piece was not as well accepted as some of Marlon Brando’s other work, such as Streetcar Named Desire and the film was actually banned in the UK for 14 years! What is Johnny rebelling against? “What have you got?” The story starts out when Brando, starring as Johnny Strabler, BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM
and his gang the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club roll into a small Midwestern town and interrupt a motorcycle race being held there. A member of the BRMC steals a trophy, and presents it to Johnny who is the president of the gang in a show of respect. This trophy will become a focal point in the rest of the film, as it was not ‘won’ in actual competition, but won by the club as a spoil of confrontation. Johnny never actually states that he won the trophy until the gang heads to a local café, where Johnny meets Kathie Bleeker (played by Mary Murphy) who is the daughter of the local constable. Johnny tries to impress Kathie by stating that he won the trophy in the race, and asks her out to a dance being held later in the evening. Kathie refuses, and as the gang causes more and more disturbance, the locals in the town prod Harry Bleeker (the local cop played by Robert Keith) to deal with the gang. At this point in the film, it becomes clear that Kathie is actually attracted to Johnny, and his wild lifestyle, but the romance never seems to work out. … As Johnny and his gang leave the café, they encounter Chino (played by Lee Marvin) and his gang. Johnny and Chino are old enemies, and it is inferred that they were both members of another – larger- gang. Their rivalry escalated when Johnny broke off and formed the BRMC. Chino tries to recover the stolen trophy, but is unable to do so. As in all films of this nature, a fight breaks out between Johnny and Chino - Johnny wins. During the melee, a citizen hits a motorcycle with his car, and Chino drags him out of the car to beat him up. It is at this point that Harry the Cop arrests Chino. Harry was going to arrest the citizen also, but he lets him go in fear of future retribution. With Chino in jail, Johnny returns to the café to once again ask Kathie out. She again refuses using the ‘trophy’ and the alleged theft as an excuse. … (I guess she didn’t want to be a “Trophy” wife!) Later that night, Chino’s gang abducts the citizen from his home and in a hilarious scene attempt to put him in jail with Chino. They actually get him into a cot in the cell, but Chino is too drunk to get up, so they just leave him there. He later breaks out! How you ask? The locals form up a vigilante squad to run the bikers out of town. When they go to the jail to retrieve their neighbor, Chino escapes and disappears into the darkness. Later Chino and his gang attempt to abduct Kathie but our hero Johnny saves the day! Kathie and Johnny soon part but the vigilantes capture Johnny and give him a good beating. He escapes, and returns to his motorcycle and as the vigilantes give chase, one of them throws a tire iron at the speeding bike. The tire iron knocks Johnny from his bike, but the rider-less machine careens into an elderly bystander, killing him. … Johnny is arrested and charged with manslaughter but after Kathie and another witness corroborate his story, he is released from jail. In the end, even though it is apparent that Johnny doesn’t want to thank his witnesses for speaking up for him, he returns to the café to offer the trophy to Kathie. This film is a classic piece that you will likely enjoy if you are fan of biker exploitation films. I stated earlier that this is the one that started it all, and if you like this kind of action this is a must see! The film runs 79 minutes; it is presented in beautiful black and white, and available on DVD! I’ll give this one five stars, and you will play it over and over again, I promise. …
THE PHANTOM MOVIE REVIEW
Do you have a favorite Biker Movie we don’t have? Let us know: info@borntoride.com
Christian Motorcyclists Association and would have greatly disappointed several of our riders. Wisdom can sometimes be very obvious, and not using wisdom in some situations can likewise be very dangerous. On one ride I was not in the lead but managed to pick up a very large nail. We were miles from help, and already had one member of our group going for a trailer to get someone else back to camp. Wisdom prevailed, one of our group members suggested that the nail was not where it would rub on the asphalt and seemed to be safe to ride back to the shop in town. I had one of our riders give my wife a ride back into town so that in case the bike went down only one of us would get road rash. I rode slowly, and yes, the nail held for the ride! The Bible talks about wisdom, in James 1:5 we read, “If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it.” Sometimes we have not because we ask not; that applies with wisdom as well. God is a loving God, and He delights in being able to provide us with the wisdom we need in any situation. Sometimes He gives us wisdom through prayer, sometimes through the Bible, and sometimes even through our fellow bikers. After all, wisdom is the application of knowledge. When God allows us to learn something, He helps us see how to apply the lesson in our lives. If you lack wisdom, ask, your answer may be closer than you think! One of the great aspects of riding with, and forming friends in the biker community, is the tremendous amount of help that is available. If you break down on the side of the road, it won’t likely be all that long until a biker pulls over and offers you a hand of experience and wisdom, and you’ll be on your way. If you are on a group ride and stopped for some refreshments, one of your fellow riders may point out a riding tip if he sees you are having some challenges. It’s so often said that there is no wiser teacher than one who has experienced a certain situation. One example of a rider full of wisdom is a well-trained Road Captain. He not only plans a ride route, but he will also very likely go out and ride it himself, before taking a group with him. I once had the opportunity to lead a group ride, and I was excited for the opportunity. I carefully pored over my maps, and my memory, and began seeking the best way to have a great ride! Once the way was laid out, not having the time needed to go run the ride myself, I zoomed in on my computerized map. It was then I discovered a large bit of the ride was on a lime rock road. That would not have earned any points with my friends BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
