MEANING OF MEMORIAL DAY NEVER FORGET OUR VETERANS WHO SERVE
I have approached this subject several times over the years, Memorial Day is not the official start of summer, nor should it be the reason for a 3-day long weekend of parties, barbecues, or car sales. Memorial Day has had several names over the 150 years of its existence; however, the reason for Memorial Day stays the same. The day is for honoring and showing respect for those who have been killed while serving in the military, beginning with the Civil War through current military engagements. Over the years Memorial Day has BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM
diminished as a national holiday and has became the unofficial start of summer and big box store specials. Why has it gotten to that point? Simply stated, people don’t seem to care as much as they have in the past. With only 10% of the American population having served in the military, the other 90% seems to have forgotten what the actual cost of freedom is, those who have given their lives. Cemeteries will have small American Flags placed on the final resting places of our warriors and American Flags should be flown at half staff from dawn until noon at which time
they will be brought back to full staff (or to the top of the pole). To properly bring the Flag to the half staff position the flag should be raised to the upper most position on the staff and then lowered to the half way position. Now you should have some idea as to what Memorial Day represents and what respect and dignity the day should be shown. Please say a special prayer for those who we have lost over the years. God Bless America and those who serve in uniform. It’s not about the war; it’s about those who serve to protect us.
Terry Longpre
Remember and Honor our Veterans and Never Forget the meaning of Memorial Day.
Riding along a suburban street, you approach a slow-moving car. You would like to pass, but the driver keeps speeding up and slowing down, causing you to delay that action. After following the creeper for several blocks, you become frustrated and decide to accelerate by. As soon as you pull out to pass the creeper, the driver makes a sudden left turn into a driveway, leaving you no room to stop or swerve. Strategy: The car’s erratic pace should have tipped you off that the driver was searching for something (a street address, perhaps) and that her attention was elsewhere rather than on surrounding traffic. Evaluating the situation, you should have predicted that the driver might turn or stop suddenly. Your best strategy in a situation like this is to separate yourself from the hazard. You could have dropped back at least two seconds. If you choose to pass, do so only after clearly establishing contact with the driver, preferably after receiving a hand signal from her. Never pass at an intersection or other traffic situation where the car could turn in front of you. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

Developed exclusively for Harley-Davidson, the fade effect goes from a lighter to darker shade as it moves higher on the motorcycle and is very carefully aligned on each piece of bodywork to create the illusion that the motorcycle is being lighted from below. JP’s RAMBLIN’ ON...
“Go fast, you’ll get there” shouted Chris as I peeled-out of the driveway at his shop, Freedom Road, in Winnebago, IL. But that was long ago, and far away. Today in the mail, I received my new t-shirt from Bobby at Brother Moto, in Atlanta, stating “Be Fast or Be Last.” I like that. Do you see a pattern here? Safety first, that’s gotta be it! Here’s a challenge for you … see if you can spot me at a local motorcycle event. I could be wearing my new shirt, so come up, say “hi” and introduce yourself. I tried to order one of the wanna GOFAST t-shirts from the GA ½ mile shootout. I like the one that says, “If You’re Not First, You’re Last.” Sadly, Bruce replied back to me, those t-shirts were somehow too special for mail order, but any of the other shirts on his apparel webpage he could send. But NOT the one that I want. I’d have to return to an event, which is a very good time, by the way, and stand in line at the t-shirt vendor with my cameras around
my neck and notebooks in hand, preparing to capture the event for news media. Then purchase my “special” shirt and try to stuff it into my already overfilled saddlebags for the ride home. I happened to spot a Blue Ribbon Cycles shirt in person at the Killer Creek Harley-Davidson swap meet a couple of
entrepreneur John Landstrom. Since the first of the season “Cruise N Blues” at Killer Creek Harley-Davidson was canceled (watch for more!) due to stormy weather rolling thru the area during the late morning and early afternoon hours. I was ready to ride when the sun came out later that afternoon, and I was able to put some more miles on my newly acquired Metzeler CruiseTec tires. So, I am now able to give you an update of my riding review. Being a man of few words, ‘GREAT’ should suffice. But let me explain. Having put over 200+ miles on the Metzelers, I was able to start scraping the floorboards on my Road King and let the sparks fly very confidently. These tires hold the line in every corner, rough or smooth surface, fast or faster, weeks ago. Looking good! Blue Ribbon was solo or with my wife onboard. She likes the the first shop that I visited after moving down corners! Mile after mile, smile after smile, south here to the Atlanta area in ‘85. Then, these tires are proving to be a fantastic after a few years, I commissioned master choice for my King. And I definitely feel mechanic LA, at Blue Ribbon, to build me a secure riding on my new CruiseTecs, they custom bike. From the ground up. Good job! are the ONLY thing between my butt and the Good people. Everything changes. Now the highway. I’ve had my butt on the highway Smyrna, GA shop is closed. Remembering with other tires, so does that make me an all the good times. expert? I dunno, but I will say I know some I’d bet that buying a Blue Ribbon t-shirt things. helps Gene in his retirement years. LOL More will be revealed. Stay tuned to this Has anyone seen LA around? column. I have a road trip planned real soon, Do you remember the big three and I’ll let you know how these tires do independent shops back in the mid-80s? A BIRTHDAY PARTY
For Georgia’s Oldest Harley Dealer
Macon Harley-Davidson hosted a 98th Birthday Party Celebration for its founder Grover Sassaman that no one in attendance will soon forget. Plenty of food, drinks, raffles, prizes and, of course, a huge Birthday Cake for all to enjoy. The Sassaman family have owned and actively operated Harley-Davidson dealerships since 1947. Serving Macon and surrounding communities since 1957, the HarleyDavidson of Macon team is committed to delivering a premium customer experience BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM
while sharing their passion for motorcycles. Founder, Grover Sassaman still comes in every day and loves connecting with customers, so don’t be surprised if Grover stops you to ask about your HarleyDavidson of Macon experience. Owner and Dealer Principal, Greg Sassaman grew up in the business, learning to repair HarleyDavidson motorcycles at a young age before his passion and success in flat track racing earned him a spot on the Harley-Davidson Factory Racing Team. Greg’s wife Lisa is
the MotorClothes Manager, oldest son Brett is the Service Manager, and youngest son Payton is the Parts Manager. This truly is a family business, and we are happy to include you as part of our Harley-Davidson® family and look forward to serving you. I didn’t want to miss the party, so riding down from Marietta, GA to Macon was a great Saturday ride. Upon arriving at Macon H-D and walking in the front door, Trig, their “greeter dog,” gave me a good sniff (looking for more food Continued on Page 22

I suspect), after which I was face to face with Grover, seated in front of the beautiful birthday cake prepared especially for him. Yep, he confirmed that he was 98 years old, after trying to explain to me that the numbers on the cake were actually transposed and upside down and that he was really only 86! After some time, I managed to get the truth out of Grover, he is a kidder, and he’s actually proud to be 98 years young and the world’s oldest active Harley-Davidson dealer. Grover is also a decorated WWII veteran with BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM
quite a story to tell. He tells me that back in 1947, he became a dealer by signing with one of the original Harley-Davidson company founders, Arthur Davidson and that the next 72 years flew by fast while representing Harley-Davidson! Riders old and new were coming in all afternoon to visit with Grover, wishing him a “happy birthday” and reminiscing of days gone by. The entire staff was busy helping guests with food and drink and were available for any questions concerning
the birthday boy, or Harley-Davidson motorcycles, parts and accessories. The staff seemed extremely knowledgeable in all departments. The service department had bikes coming in, going out, being test ridden and routine services were being performed in the shop. Great group of guys. After all the festivities and plenty of food, I hopped back on my hog (I was feeling like a hog!) and returned to Marietta. Great trip. Great party. Thank you, Grover! See y’all for the 99th JP Brady

Rolling Thunder is the largest 1st Amendment demonstration run in the United States, and every year during Memorial Day weekend motorcyclists roll into our Nation’s capital to emphasize the urgency of keeping POW/MIA issues current. “With the economic recovery and healthcare reform taking center stage, the POW/MIA issue is one that nobody in our government wants to address anymore. If they keep dragging their feet, sooner or later anyone who was captured alive will have passed away. But for their families, there is never any closure. Searching for and returning remains is a valid mission but there is too much evidence that live POWs were left behind, particularly in Southeast Asia, and we shouldn’t give up efforts to find them.” Artie Muller, Rolling Thunder national executive director, and cofounder I never cease to tire in participating in this ride since I started going in 1995. If you can imagine doing a toy run in your own city or a city as big as Atlanta. What about riding your Nations Capital, greeted by people on overpasses as you come in and people slapping your hand as you ride down Independence and Constitution Ave? see veteran RT returning performers like Nancy Sinatra & Country Singer Gordon Painter. In past years, I was able to meet Nancy Sinatra, a regular participant, Gary Sinise, Connie Stevens, Chris Noel and TV, and film actor Robert Patrick, who rode his bike all the way from California. I say it every year to my friends and fellow riders, if you are a vet, this is the “bucket list,” the one to go to. Even if you are not a vet, this is still the one to go to support and honor those who served and died for us, so that we can ride free. After my first run in 1995, I was inspired to write a poem which is featured on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial web site www.thewallusa.com. REFLECTIONS ON ROLLING THUNDER It started from the Pentagon, it was an awesome sight, A motorcade of cyclists, an entourage of knights. Winding through the streets, as far as you can see, Across Memorial Bridge, through Washington, DC Up Independence Avenue, and ‘round the Capitol, By Washington’s Monument, on and on they roll. Down Constitution Avenue, past the reflecting pool.
Rolling Thunder, The Saluting Marine, Staff Sgt. Tim Chambers, Thank You
The roar of different cycles, but all playing the same tune. Past the cheering crowds, lined up along the street, With their hands outstretched, to bikers they would greet. Where do they all come from, why is it they come? From Pacific, North and South, like sounds of rolling drums. From rows of eight across to fifteen bikes abreast, Assorted motorcycles, honoring the best. The ultimate direction, for the bikers all, All headed down the city’s streets, for the Viet Nam Wall. Feelings of emotions and feelings of much pride, Respect for those missing, and in ‘Nam that died. Despite the controversy, they were well up to the task. Those inscribed upon the wall, served when they were asked. They gave their lives for us, so that we may be free, Free to live and ride, wherever that we please.

ing Diamond started almost entirely on a whim. My friend Chris Lampman told me to stop messing around with a generator shovel project I was putzing with and to do the pan in a VL frame project I had in my garage. We started working on the bike in October or November of 2007, and finished it by the third week of March 2008. We put in a lot of time in my garage that winter. Almost every part on this bike is made from scratch or heavily customized. The frame needed a new backbone and a new neck forging, as well as new motor mounts to fit the panhead motor into the smaller VL frame. We had to weld in new bearing cups in the neck, and I modified internal fork stops
BTR 54 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM
to work with the Ceriani front end. The bars were made from scratch. The seat pan was modified to increase the flip-up on the back; I also made a custom seat pivot bracket. The gas tank was heavily modified (removing a half-inch from the bottom, tapering middle section from the top, frisco’ing the bottom moving the petcock and putting in a new filler neck on the crown of the tank). The clutch lever is a modified aluminum British lever made to fit a H-D clutch cable. We cut the neck stem on the Ceriani trees in half and extended to fit in the VL neck. The pipes were handmade. The top motor mount, the foot peg and brake setup, the kick shifter, the primary cover mount/taillight and license plate mount, the sissy bar, the mousetrap eliminator, and several other things I am
sure I am missing, were handmade, as well. I tried to use round stock and curved shapes for everything, to get a rounded, organic feel on the bike. I decided early on to have a quality fit and finish to this bike, which meant polishing, chroming and powder coating all the parts possible. I had the cases and the heads on the engine polished, as well as the entire transmission. I had the cylinders powder coated silver. All aluminum was sent out to be polished; Gary at J&D Plating did all of my chrome plating and polishing. For the paint, I told Harpoon to do whatever he wanted, and he came through to perfection. For assembly, I used chrome
hardware throughout and used cloth-covered wire for the minimal electrics. In short, I spent way too much time and money to get this bike done-and clean looking. After I made it look so pretty, I started riding it and promptly doused everything with oil. Eventually I found the crankcase breather was clogged,
forcing oil out of the engine in all directions. Once I repaired that, the oil leaking slowed tremendously. I rode all summer, it is fast, comfortable, and a real pleasure to ride. It looks nice and beat-up now, and it will look even better as I continue racking up the miles and flogging it around town. Thanks go to Chris Lampman for all of his help building this bike, and all the 7th Street crew in St. Paul for their help and support. I stole ideas from all over, but I got a ton of inspiration from Max Schaaf, Rockabilly Jay, Irish Rich, Arlen Ness’s old yellow VL bike and All Stubbings’ “Detail Freak” bike (both versions-early and late). Thanks to Josh Kurpius for taking the pics, respect! David Polgreen and Chris Lampman

Katy O. Ishee, Road Rash ‘N Road Tales
Katy Ishee (pronounced “Is she” like is she coming or is she going?) is known in riding circles by her nickname “Krazy” and has lots of stories where she’s lived up to that name! (Like crazy fun and audacious.) As a young married woman, riding on her neighbor’s Vespa sparked a desire to ride. After divorcing, in 1974 Katy bought a 1967 R69S BMW which she still rides. In the early days of riding, Katy was often the only woman riding her own in the motorcycle clubs she hung out with. She won “Most Unusual Field Event” at a Bike Party where she drag-raced several guys and beat each one. The last run ended with her smashing into the fence only to get up, covered in mud, and get back on her bike. Described as a “free-spirited gypsy” she’s zigzagged across the country living in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Arizona,
Tennessee, and South Dakota. Some of those states more than once. She has a motorcycle license in five states. In the early 1980s when M*A*S*H was a popular TV show, Katy toured as a “Hot Lips Houlihan” lookalike, often appearing with a Hawkeye Pierce lookalike. Now guests to her home often ask why she has a photo of Hot Lips and Hawkeye on the wall—until they look a little closer!
The wedding was at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida during a Christmas toy drive for children. In 1994 Katy married classic rock singer Virgil T in a biker-themed wedding. They met in a biker bar where he was singing. They shared a love for motorcycles and just clicked. The wedding was at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida during a Christmas toy drive for children. of revving motors. Katy’s first memoir Pieces of My Heart: A Free-Spirited Gypsy’s Journey Through Her Heart and Soul … and Hell, is about how, as a pregnant teen she was sent to a home for unwed mothers, as they did back in the 60s, to have her child and give it up for adoption. Twenty-seven years later she tracked down her son to find that he’s been riding motorcycles since the age of 13, is a retired NYPD officer and a scuba diver. Looks like he inherited his Mama’s adventurous spirit! After publishing her memoir, Katy was often asked to write more stories about her adventures from the road. Road Rash ‘N Road Tales: True Stories from the Road was published in 2018 and is available on Amazon or you can get a signed, personalized copy directly from Katy at KatyIshee@MAC.com A painter, writer, photographer, Katy designed the book cover from a painting inspired by the bar where she met Virgil T. This month, it’s “Wild Hogs” starring Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy. The film was released in 2007, and as far ‘biker exploitation films’ go, I suppose that definition probably doesn’t really fit. It is however “wildly” entertaining if you are a comedy fanatic, or middle-aged gay basher. The story centers around four middle-aged businessmen who bored with their regular suburban lives, embark on a road trip on their Harleys. Doug (Tim Allen) is a dentist; Bobby (Martin Lawrence) is a plumber; Woody (Travolta) is a bankrupt husband of a swimsuit model, who is divorcing him. Dudley (Macy) is a computer geek, who seeks the companionship of a woman (possibly his first experience) and constantly falls of his motorcycle in some very well performed stunt work. The action, the sets, and riding footage were quite good. The acting was dramatic at times, but continues to make the four look way too “Rubbie” to be realistic. The overuse of gay references became redundant to a point, but overall it remained funny I guess. The road trip is filled with humorous moments, such as the four sleeping close together scantily clad, after burning their tent down and being discovered by a policeman who is overtly gay, and actually jealous of their situation. A little farther down the road, the four are skinny-dipping in a pond when a traveling family joins them. The family discovers their state of undress while searching for crawdads, and later by the very same – very gay – and very naked policeman. The Hogs escape from the pond on their motorcycles, and during one of their frequent urination stops, they watch in awe as a large group of bikers pass by. This group was the Del Fuegos Motorcycle Club, and the Hogs meet them later down the road at their “Biker Bar” Clubhouse. This meeting goes bad of course, and Dudley ends up losing his motorcycle to “Jack” (Ray Liotta) who is the club’s president. The Hogs are ridiculed and sent down the road with Dudley in tow in a sidecar attached to Woody’s motorcycle. Less than a mile down the road, Woody decides to walk back to the biker bar and retrieve Dudley’s bike. As the others wait beside the highway, BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Woody sneaks up, cuts the fuel lines on several of the club’s bikes, and takes off on Dudley’s bike. When Jack discovers the bike missing, the club fires up to give chase, but their pursuit is halted when Jack discards his cigarette into a puddle of gas, which causes their (clubhouse) building to explode and burn to the ground. Meanwhile Woody returns to the trio with Dudley’s bike and to their surprise spins a tale of threatening the club with legal action. The 4 Hogs ride by the bar waving and Woody gives them the finger just before the whole place blows up. Seeing the massive explosion in his rearview mirror, Woody refuses to stop – even for gas- and the Hogs end up pushing their motorcycles through the desert, where they end up in the small town of Madrid. In Madrid, the Hogs have to stay the night to wait for the gas station to open. The Sheriff mistakes the four for Del Fuegos members. He tells them the club members terrorize the town frequently. He explains the small police force (who received weapons training by playing the video game Doom) is unable to do anything about them. Meanwhile Jack sends his members out in pairs to locate the Hogs. The Madrid chili festival is held that night and Dudley
furthers his interest in Maggie (Marisa Tomei) who owns the local diner. As he courts her, Bobby comes across two Del Fuegos in town. Because of Woody’s previous explanation and believing that he is untouchable, Bobby humiliates the two bikers by squirting them with ketchup and mustard. Under orders from Jack, the two club members refuse to do anything and Bobby appears to win this battle. The town praises the Wild Hogs as saviors, considering them a friendly biker gang who can protect them. They are appreciative to the point that Dudley spends the night with Maggie. The next morning the Del Fuegos ride into town 50 strong. Jack yells to the townspeople that his gang will vandalize the town, starting with the diner, until the Wild Hogs come out to fight. Woody reveals his lie about the biker bar incident, and the Hogs hide inside Maggie’s house with the local Sheriff. As they peer out the window, Dudley walks out alone to face the gang, armed only with a tire iron. They tape him up and hang him from a tree like a piñata. Doug launches a plan to rescue him and he is able to convince the other two to help. After the failed attempt, the Hogs decide to fight the club in front of the diner. The Fight is 4 on 4 with the Hogs taking repeated beatings. Refusing to quit, the Hogs get back up and challenge the club once more, but this time the entire town comes to back them up. Armed with axe handles, sticks and the like, Jack laughs and refers to them as the children of the corn. At this moment the Del Fuegos founder Damien Blade (Peter Fonda) arrives on the scene. Blade chastises Jack and the Del Fuegos for picking on four men and the townspeople, and reveals he actually thought his bar was a “S#!tHOLE” and explained that he insured the bar for twice what it was worth. Now we also learn that Jack is Damien’s son, and he points out to Jack how he forgot what being out on the open road is about and that it doesn’t involve thuggish behavior and violence. The gang soon departs, and the Hogs are again heroes. That is until the Doug and Bobby’s wives arrive in town! After a brief reconciliation, the Hogs venture out to their original destination, the Pacific Coast. I would give it 3 out of 5 stars for a good effort at wasting an hour and a half of my time.
THE PHANTOM MOVIE REVIEW

Christian Motorcyclists Association Riding is an exciting event that offers a sense of freedom that is like nothing else imaginable. For the most part, getting in the wind for a ride is a great release, offering great independence and freedom from the cares of the world. Unfortunately, with all good things comes the possibility of a
less than desirable outcome. One night my wife and I were returning from a celebration of life and noticed a storm several miles away, and not in our path of travel. All was fine until we got out in the countryside and noticed the storm had changed directions. Now it was headed our way, and we would have to ride directly into the danger as there was no detour available. It was a very dark stretch of road, lit only by my headlight and the lightning from the squall. The storm turned into the worst weather we had ever encountered on a bike. We were not only totally drenched but surrounded by massive thunder and lightning as well. In a word, we were terrified! During a different ride, in the Georgia Mountains, I had been having a difficult day with the curves. I just couldn’t get comfortable that day. To make matters worse, a lot of that BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
mountain road did not have guard rails. At the base of the road, I had hit a patch of loose gravel that caused the back tire to break traction. It really wasn’t that bad of a road, but my confidence in myself just wasn’t there that day. As a result, I found myself going slower and slower up the mountain, making the bike all the harder to control. All I could think of was that once I got to the parking area at the top of the ride, I would then face the long ride back down. That was not a comforting thought and added to the worry that already had a firm grip on me. Both of these situations had an element in common. I had done nothing dangerous or foolhardy, the situation just unfolded as it did. As things began to fall apart, a positive thought came to mind and made all the difference in the world. The aforementioned rides were still nerve-wracking, but I was blessed by a peace that brought comfort in the midst of fear. In 1 Peter 5:7, the Bible tells us to, “Give all your worries to Him, because He cares about you.” See, far too often we get into a difficult situation and try to figure out how we are going to “fix” the problem. This passage simply encourages us to give away the challenges that are facing us, to stop trying to solve the issues at hand, and just let God do His magnificent healing work! We are challenged to turn our difficulties over to the one Who made it all. We must simply let go and let God!
